Hello, I'm Jill at engvid, and today I'd like to talk to you about Queen Elizabeth II,
0
0
10000
00:11
giving my own personal perspective. So you may already have seen my video about the British
1
11760
9200
00:20
royal family, which was made in 2017, where I give some of the names and explain how they're
2
20960
9440
00:30
related to each other. And you may also have seen my video on the ages and periods of English
3
30400
8560
00:38
history made in 2021. And where I get a bit emotional towards the end of the video, when
4
38960
9520
00:48
I'm talking about the second Elizabethan age and the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
5
48480
7280
00:57
So I'm sure you've probably heard by now the news that Queen Elizabeth II died on the 8th of
6
57200
10400
01:07
September 2022. And that was quickly followed by lots of processions through the streets,
7
67600
8480
01:16
church services, a lying in state in London, where people could walk through and pay their respects,
8
76080
10160
01:27
the main funeral in London on the 19th of September, and the final procession
9
87040
7200
01:34
and church service at Windsor Castle, just to the west of London.
10
94240
5360
01:39
So, if you're living many miles away from the UK, perhaps in a country where you don't have
11
99600
9120
01:48
a king or queen, these events and people's reactions might all seem quite strange.
12
108720
7440
01:57
Though perhaps it's a normal reaction to the death of a very famous and popular person,
13
117280
7280
02:04
whether they're a monarch, a politician, an actor, a footballer, and so on.
14
124560
6960
02:13
I think because the Queen was quite elderly, she was 96 years old, her death didn't come as a
15
133440
7200
02:20
surprise, but for a lot of people, it came as a shock. It was something a lot of people had been
16
140640
9520
02:30
dreading, because she had been Queen for just over 70 years. And for most people, including me,
17
150160
8080
02:39
we had never known anything different. She'd always been the Queen. So, you may have seen
18
159120
8480
02:47
news coverage with a lot of people in the streets, bringing flowers, queuing up for hours,
19
167600
7920
02:55
some of them overnight, to file past the coffin in Westminster Hall. And I read a bit of discussion
20
175520
9520
03:05
in the press about why people felt the need to do that, to be there. I'm sure there were
21
185040
8160
03:13
different reasons for different people, but basically, I think they wanted to feel part
22
193200
6640
03:19
of a unique historic moment, and be with other people who felt the same way, a sense of community.
23
199840
9040
03:30
I didn't go to central London myself, but I watched a lot of the events on television each day,
24
210640
7360
03:38
and that was another way of being part of it.
25
218800
3360
03:42
But I'm also aware that some people have different attitudes and opinions about the monarchy,
26
222160
6320
03:49
and some were criticising the television channels for the way they were covering the events,
27
229200
6560
03:56
with hardly any other news being reported. This was perhaps because they're not so happy
28
236560
7680
04:04
about the system of monarchy that we have in the UK. Some people just don't care about the monarchy,
29
244240
11360
04:15
while others, who you might call Republicans, are actively campaigning to replace the monarchy
30
255600
8240
04:23
altogether, and perhaps have an elected president instead.
31
263840
4640
04:28
But the way the system works is that as soon as one monarch dies, the heir to the throne
32
268480
8480
04:36
takes their place. So Charles, who was previously Prince of Wales, is now King Charles III,
33
276960
8560
04:46
and his son, William, who was previously the Duke of Cambridge, is now Prince of Wales in his place.
34
286560
9440
04:56
This succession, as it's called, is a way of avoiding a power vacuum, where different people
35
296000
8320
05:04
might make a claim to the throne, which sometimes happened hundreds of years ago,
36
304320
6160
05:11
and it could result in a lot of instability and uncertainty, even to the extent of people
37
311200
7440
05:18
supporting different candidates and fighting battles. So, for me personally, as for a lot of people,
38
318640
12560
05:32
Queen Elizabeth II had always been there. She became Queen in 1952, when her father,
39
332000
9040
05:41
King George VI, died, and her coronation was in 1953, and that was before I was even born.
40
341040
9760
05:53
So, you may be wondering if I ever saw her in person, rather than just on television. Well,
41
353360
6960
06:01
I did have a vague childhood memory of my mother taking me to see the Queen,
42
361200
7120
06:08
driving past us in a car, when I was about three years old. This was in my hometown,
43
368320
7920
06:16
in the East Midlands, about 120 miles north of London. I wondered if this memory was accurate,
44
376240
11440
06:27
or whether I just imagined it. So, I did a bit of googling to find out if the Queen had actually
45
387680
9760
06:37
visited my hometown in that year, and I discovered that she really had been there.
46
397440
7440
06:46
I found some photos of her visit, and her husband, Prince Philip, was there with her.
47
406160
6880
06:54
So, my memory was correct. I remember my mother said to me that the Queen had looked straight at
48
414080
8080
07:02
me, as she was smiling and waving from her car, but I don't really remember seeing her, to be
49
422160
8400
07:10
honest. I just remember being on a pavement with a lot of other people, who were mostly a lot taller
50
430560
8960
07:19
than me. Then, when I was a teenager, in the 1960s and 70s, there was what you might call a
51
439520
12960
07:32
counter-cultural period, when people seemed to become more critical of royalty, and what's called
52
452480
8720
07:41
the Establishment, with a capital E. They felt that the royal family had no relevance to their own
53
461200
8480
07:49
lives, that it was an old-fashioned tradition, and that we could do without it. I remember,
54
469680
8560
07:58
around that time, if you went to the cinema, they used to play the national anthem at the end of
55
478240
6240
08:04
the film, and you were supposed to stand up and show respect when you heard the music start to
56
484480
7520
08:12
play. But some people made a point of staying in their seats, as a kind of protest. But then,
57
492000
8080
08:20
after a while, cinemas and theatres stopped playing the national anthem altogether.
58
500080
5280
08:25
So, there have always been different opinions about royalty, and that's okay, because in the UK,
59
505360
8800
08:34
the idea of free speech, and the right to express your own opinion, is accepted.
60
514880
7120
08:44
But, as time has gone on, I've come to realise how hard-working the Queen and other members of
61
524240
7600
08:51
the royal family have been. They always seem to be going somewhere, shaking hands and chatting
62
531840
7760
08:59
to people, supporting charities and other activities, travelling within the UK, and also
63
539600
9360
09:08
to many countries around the world. Over the years, I've seen the Queen in photographs,
64
548960
8080
09:17
on the television news, and in documentaries, meeting people with a friendly smile,
65
557040
6480
09:24
putting people at their ease, and having a normal conversation with them.
66
564160
4960
09:30
Even when she was at home, in one of her castles or palaces, she was working at her desk,
67
570480
7360
09:37
reading through paperwork, organising things, having her weekly meeting with the Prime Minister,
68
577840
7520
09:45
making plans for the next trip, and so on.
69
585360
2960
09:51
I believe the Queen was a genuinely nice person, who represented some good values - kindness,
70
591120
8080
09:59
politeness, respect, calmness, stability, optimism. And in recent years, we've seen more
71
599200
10800
10:10
of her sense of humour. I'm giving you a link here to the James Bond sketch that she did
72
610000
8960
10:18
with the actor Daniel Craig, for the opening of the 2012 London Olympics, where she - well,
73
618960
9200
10:28
it was a body double - and James Bond both jumped out of a helicopter into the Olympic Stadium
74
628160
8400
10:36
with Union Jack parachutes. And then, 10 years later, in 2022, for her platinum jubilee,
75
636560
12080
10:49
her 70-year anniversary of becoming Queen, she did another sketch. And I'm giving you a link
76
649200
9280
10:58
to her having tea with Paddington Bear and producing a marmalade sandwich from her handbag.
77
658480
8320
11:08
So, to round off these random thoughts, my words to the late Queen Elizabeth are what Paddington
78
668480
10960
11:19
Bear himself says at the end of that sketch, "Thank you, ma'am, for everything."
