Hello. I'm Gill at engVid, and today's lesson is on the subject of rhyme. Okay? So, you
0
0
9040
00:09
may have seen some of my videos on poetry. Have a look out for my poetry playlist on
1
9040
8200
00:17
the channel. So, this is part of that. This is all about rhymes, which often do appear
2
17240
6640
00:23
in poetry. Okay. So, what does it take to create a rhyme? How do two words rhyme? So,
3
23880
10800
00:34
it may seem obvious. You may, you know, have a good instinct for what is a rhyme, but just
4
34680
8680
00:43
to say that it has to be two things. The vowel sound has to be the same, and a consonant
5
43360
8160
00:51
sound also has to be the same. So, for example, this is a very old-fashioned... This is a
6
51520
8560
01:00
kind of thing children learn at school when they first go to school. "The cat sat on the
7
60080
7440
01:07
mat." So, we've got "a", this is the phonetic symbol for the "a" sound in these three words,
8
67520
9440
01:16
the letter "a", "a". So, "cat", "sat", "mat", you can tell that... You can hear that those
9
76960
7400
01:24
rhyme. But also the "t" at the end has to be there as well. "Cat", "sat", "mat". So,
10
84360
10020
01:34
two things, vowel and consonant. Okay? So, if you're ever looking for a rhyme, of course
11
94380
7200
01:41
you can Google it. There are websites that help you to find rhymes, but you can think
12
101580
8680
01:50
of it for yourself. If you go through the alphabet, that's the way I do it. If you've
13
110260
6220
01:56
got "at" as your basic word or component, "cat", "sat", "mat", you can go through the
14
116480
8280
02:04
alphabet. You can go "at", "b", "bat", "c", "cat", "f" works with it, "fat", "h", "hat",
15
124760
15240
02:20
"mat", "p", "pat", "r", "rat", "sat", "v", "vat". So, you just go through the letters of the
16
140000
13680
02:33
alphabet and see if that's a real word or not. It has... Well, usually it would have
17
153680
6760
02:40
to be a real word, not one that you're just making up. Okay? So, that's one way of doing
18
160440
7880
02:48
it.
19
168320
1240
02:49
And so, in poetry, the rhyming often comes at the end of a line, and it rhymes with another
20
169560
8640
02:58
line, not necessarily the line next to it, but there could be some alternating rhymes.
21
178200
8360
03:06
But it's called an "end rhyme" if it comes at the end of the line. You can also have
22
186560
6040
03:12
internal rhyme. If you see a word maybe in the middle of the line, it might rhyme with
23
192600
8280
03:20
the word of the end of the same line, or there may be a word in the middle of one line which
24
200880
7680
03:28
rhymes with another word in the middle of another line. So, don't just look at the ends
25
208560
5480
03:34
of the lines for rhymes. You might find rhyming internally as well within the line. Okay?
26
214040
12320
03:46
You can also have in poetry, if you're analysing it, you can have what's called a "half rhyme".
27
226360
7240
03:53
That's if you're not using both, it's a half rhyme. So, if you have the cat sat on the
28
233600
6360
03:59
man, you've still got the same vowel, "ah", "ah", "ah", but you've got "tuh", "tuh", "mm".
29
239960
9560
04:09
You've got an "n" here instead of a "t", so it's still got the vowel sound, but it hasn't
30
249520
7760
04:17
got the consonant sound with it, so that's called a "half rhyme" because it doesn't have
31
257280
4920
04:22
both. Okay?
32
262200
3360
04:25
And then you can also have a visual rhyme when you're seeing it in print. If you look
33
265560
6080
04:31
at these two words, they've got "r", "o", "u", "g", "h", both of them, but when you
34
271640
7800
04:39
say them, you find that they have different vowel sounds. This is "through", when you
35
279440
8880
04:48
go through somewhere, through a tunnel, the train went through the tunnel. But this word,
36
288320
7520
04:55
do you know how to pronounce this one? This word is pronounced "rough", so this is "through",
37
295840
8360
05:04
and that's "rough" with an "f" sound at the end. So, they look so similar, but they sound
38
304200
8280
05:12
completely different, so that's a visual rhyme, but it's not a sound rhyme. And the same with
39
312480
7240
05:19
this one. We've got "one", "one", but this one's pronounced "alone", and this one is
40
319720
10320
05:30
"gone", "o", "o", so the vowel sound is different again. "Alone", "gone". Okay.
41
330040
8720
05:38
And this one, well, "wind", there is a word "wind" when you wind some cotton or some wool,
42
338760
9920
05:48
you wind it into a ball, but there's also the pronunciation "wind" when it's a windy
43
348680
7120
05:55
day in the weather. "Wind". But this is pronounced "find", so if it was "wind" and "find", that
44
355800
9680
06:05
would be okay, but it's not. If this one is to do with the weather, the wind is blowing,
45
365480
7320
06:12
you've got "wind" and "find". So, you could call this a half-rhyme, possibly, because
46
372800
7560
06:20
you've got "nd" at the end, but the vowel sound is different, so it's visual and a half-rhyme
47
380360
8960
06:29
in this case.
48
389320
2920
06:32
And then finally, just to say, if you're interested in poetry and you may be writing poetry, possibly,
49
392240
8200
06:40
but rhyming isn't enough to make something poetry, because poetry also has to have some
50
400440
9600
06:50
content. It has to be saying something, hopefully something quite deep, deep thinking, something
51
410040
9920
06:59
perhaps philosophical or something that's quite emotional. And rhyming on its own, it's
52
419960
8600
07:08
just a technical thing. Rhyming on its own doesn't create a poem. There's a lot more
53
428560
7560
07:16
involved in choosing the right words, having the thoughts behind the words as well, so
54
436120
9200
07:25
that's just something to bear in mind. Rhyming isn't enough. There are some poems that don't
55
445320
5360
07:30
have any rhyme in them or very, very few rhymes, and they're really good poems. So, you know,
56
450680
8560
07:39
if you read a few and with that in mind, you'll see what I mean.
57
459240
6440
07:45
Okay, so that's the lesson for today. You might like to try it out yourself with different...
58
465680
9320
07:55
If you think of any word and then go through the alphabet and try to think of rhymes to
59
475000
8040
08:03
go with it, that's a good exercise to do. It also helps you to check your vocabulary.
60
483040
7320
08:10
Okay. And do have a look at any of my other videos that include poetry. Look for the poetry

62
499560
7840
08:27
your understanding of rhyming, just go to the website, www.engvid.com, and give it a
63
507400
7520
08:34
try. So, thank you for watching, and I hope to see you again soon. Okay. Bye for now.
