How learning English helped Heung-min Son | Learn English with Cambridge

Language skills open up lots of opportunities to travel,

언어능력은 여행을 할 수 있는 다양한 기회를 만들어주며,

and the language skills also

또한 언어능력은

help you make a new life in a foreign country

외국에서 새로운 생활을 시작할 때 도움을 주기도 하죠.

or even build up a new career.

그게 아니더라도 새로운 커리어로 쌓을 수 있어요.

So today, I’m going to meet someone

오늘 이 언어능력을 완성시킨 분을 만나보고자 합니다.

who has already done what I said, Son Heung-min.

바로 손흥민 선수죠

He’s a Korean football player for Tottenham Hotspur.

손흥민 선수는 현재 토트넘 소속의 한국인 축구 선수입니다.

As I said, he’s Korean,

한국인 선수이지만

but he has learnt English and now his language skills

영어를 익혀서, 이 언어능력을 기반으로

have brought him a new life in England,

영국에서 새로운 생활을 보내고 있습니다.

and even a new career at Tottenham.

토트넘이라는 팀에서 커리어를 쌓는 것도 포함해서 말이죠.

Speaking of football,

축구에서 신체적인 기술들은

many physical skills are transferrable

across countries, right?

세계 어디서나 통하죠?

Because for physical skills you mainly use your body,

언어와는 달리 신체 능력만 충분하다면

not your language.

어디서든 통할 수 있어요.

But to integrate all the physical skills

하지만 신체적인 기술들을 종합하고

and go deeper,

더 깊이 파고드는 단계에 이르면,

you definitely need language skills for that.

반드시 언어 능력이 동반되어야 하죠.

The football player,

축구선수, 손흥민 선수는

Son Heung-min does such a great job for that,

I am near the Tottenham stadium.

There are some pitches.

축구 경기장들이 보이네요.

So, this is the pitch where Son is going to join,

and here Son is going to teach

토트넘 유소년들을 가르쳐 준다고 하네요.

Tottenham local kids some football skills,

like shooting, passing and dribbling.

슈팅, 패스, 그리고 드리블 같은 축구 기술들 말이죠.

So that must be really good for the children.

아이들에게 큰 도움이 될 것 같아요.

영어를 배우는 과정에 대해 얘기하며,

손흥민 선수는 거의 4년 동안

So now you’ve been playing for Tottenham Hotspur

for nearly four years,

토트넘에서 경기를 뛰고 있어요.

and you are now staying in England,

지금 영국에서 살면서

communicating with people in English,

사람들과 영어로 소통하죠.

so how was your journey in learning the English language?

영어는 어떻게 배우셨나요?

How was your first start?

영어를 처음 배울 때 어떠셨어요?

Yes, when I first came to England,

제가 런던에 처음 왔을 때

or London, actually I couldn’t speak English well,

영어를 잘 못했어요.

but I had lessons, like six months,

그래서 6개월 동안 영어 레슨을 받기도 했는데,

but I think the best thing to do is speak with your friends.

그냥 친구들하고 이야기하는 게 가장 좋은 방법이었던 것 같아요.

So even when you make mistakes, still I make the mistakes,

제가 잘못 말하더라도 물론 지금도 실수는 종종 하는데,

and the players

그럴 때마다 선수들과

or the friends try to teach me how to speak and how to spell.

친구들이 어떻게 말하고 발음하는지 알려줬어요.

And I think this was very important to learn English,

친구들과 소통하는 부분이 영어를 배울 때 중요하다고 생각해요.

and yes, right now my English is not so good for me,

그리고 아직 제 영어는 그렇게 뛰어나지는 않죠.

and still a lot to do to improve,

아직 부족해요.

but I think the friends and the players helped me a lot to speak

하지만, 친구들과 선수들이 영어 실력 향상에 도움을 줬거든요.

better English than before.

그래서 점점 좋아지고 있어요.

And Dele Alli and Harry Kane are your best British mates.

Dele Alli 선수와 Harry Kane 선수가 가장 친한 동료라고 하신 적이 있는데,

Are they also helping you to learn more about English?

영어를 배우는 데에 있어서도 도움을 줬나요?

Yes.

네, 큰 도움을 받았죠.

Those guys helped me really, really a lot,

because, especially Dele, I was always speaking a lot,

특히 Deli Alli 선수와는 이야기를 정말 많이 해요,

today as well,

오늘도 그랬고요.

every single day we had fun,

매일 같이 재미있게 놀고,

every single day jokes without end.

농담도 하고 그래요.

So I think this has helped me a lot.

제가 생각하기에는 이게 큰 도움이 됐던 것 같아요.

Like I said before, the players helped me really,

좀 전에 말했듯이,

really a lot to speak English.

영어로 말할 수 있게 이 선수들이 도움을 많이 줬죠.

And you used to play for Germany,

독일에서도 경기를 뛰신 적이 있는데,

and, at the time,

그때는 제가 알기로는

you were not really good at English, I believe,

영어를 그렇게 잘 하지 못했던 것으로 알고 있어요.

and now you are quite fluent

지금은 영어로 유창하게 말하고

and you can manage to speak in English.

소통도 편하게 하시네요.

Do you think

영어 능력을 이렇게 향상시킨 것이

that helped you build more of a career for you?

선수 커리어에도 도움을 주셨다고 생각하시나요?

Yes, I think learning English

네 영어나 다른 언어를 배우는 건

or some other language has always been an advantage,

항상 도움이 된다고 생각해요.

so as well,

그리고

after my career or when I finish football,

제가 축구 선수를 은퇴한 후에도

I can do something with my language.

언어 능력으로 뭔가 다른 일을 해볼 수도 있죠.

I think this… I really enjoy to learn some English

음… 저는 즐겁게 영어를 배우고 있고,

or some German when I go, I don’t know,

독일어도 조금 배웠어요.

somewhere else as well.

제가 다른 나라에 간다고 해도 똑같이 공부를 할 것 같아요.

I think this shows some respect also to the country.

언어를 배우는 일이 그 나라를 존중하는 방법이라고 생각하거든요.

I’m really enjoying to learn English,

저는 영어를 배우는 게 정말 즐거워요.

speaking English, even when I’m not speaking well,

유창하게 말하지 못하더라도,

but it’s really,

다른 언어를 배우는 건 정말 즐거운 일이죠.

really fun to learn another language.

But I think you are speaking English quite confidently.

근데 손흥민 선수는 지금 굉장히 자신감 있게 영어로 말하고 있어요.

Did you have any tips

영어에 자신감을 가질 수 있었던

for building up your confidence for English?

팁이 있을까요?

I’m the type who is always trying something.

저는 계속 무언가를 시도하는 사람이에요.

I said before already,

앞서 말했듯이,

when I make a mistake, I try to keep saying

저는 실수를 하면, 반복해서 말하면서

the same things.

실수를 고쳐보려고 해요.

Of course, you will make mistakes

물론 자기 모국어가 아닌 이상

because it’s not 100% your language,

실수를 할 수밖에 없죠.

but I think it’s most important

하지만 계속 시도하고

you try and fix the problems and fix the mistakes.

문제점을 고치려고 하는 게 중요하죠.

I think this is the most important part of my English.

그것이 제가 영어를 배우는 데에 가장 큰 힘이 됐다고 생각해요.

I don’t know, some people have a different way

잘 모르겠지만, 사람마다 배우는 방법이

to learn some language,

각자 다르겠죠?

but for me it was really,

하지만 저에게 있어서는

really important to try every single day.

계속 매일 노력하는 게 정말 중요했어요.

When I went to school, I learned something,

어떤 새로운 걸 배우면

I used this straight away when I came to the training

훈련할 때나 아니면 동료들과 대화할 때

and to the teammates,

바로 써보곤 했어요,

and I think this helped me a lot.

이게 도움이 많이 됐죠.

I don’t know if it’s worked,

효과적인지 아닌지 잘 모르겠지만,

but you should try to work like this

이렇게 계속 이야기를 시도하는 게

도움이 될 거라고 생각해요.

and probably it’s helpful.

And you must be still learning English now, right?

계속 영어를 배우고 계시는 거죠?

And how do you keep carrying on your English study?

어떤 방법으로 영어를 계속하고 계시나요?

Yes.

네.

Sometimes I watch some series or some movies,

저는 가끔 드라마나 영화를 보는데,

try to watch in English and not with subtitles.

자막 없이 보려고 하는 편이에요.

Of course, sometimes you don’t understand

이해 못 하는 부분이 있지만.

but you try to understand with the pictures.

영상을 보고 대략 이해할 수 있잖아요.

Yes, I think for me it’s easier,

물론 제 주변에는

because around me are all English friends

영어가 모국어인 친구들이 많아서

who are speaking English,

이 방법이 저에게 좀 더 쉬웠던 거라고 생각해요.

and I think this is part of my football career as well,

그리고 영어를 배우는 일은 제 축구 커리어의 일부이기도 하죠.

and my English as well.

영어 실력도 포함이지만요.

And my last question is can you tell English learners about

마지막 질문입니다. 지금 영어를 공부하고 있는 사람들에게 말해주셨으면 하는데,

영어를 배우는 것이 왜

how important learning

an English language is for you and for other people?

손흥민 선수와 다른 사람들에게도 중요하다고 생각하시나요?

Yes.

물론입니다.

It depends how you take it, seriously or not,

어떻게 자신이 받아들이는지에 따라 달라질 수 있어요.

or you think,

영어공부에 진지할 수도, 아닐 수도 있죠.

I need really English and probably you need it,

저는 정말로 영어를 배워야만 했어요.

but what I said before,

하지만 앞선 인터뷰에서 말했듯이,

I think when you go to London,

런던에 여행을 갈 때뿐만 아니라

or when you go to England and when you go to America,

영국을 갈 때나, 미국에 갈 때도

you should learn English

영어를 배우셨으면 해요.

because you should show the country the respect.

그 나라에 존중을 표현하는 방법이니까요.

And if you’re someone from Korea,

한국에 사는 사람이라면 이렇게 생각하면 될 것 같아요

imagine one guy is coming

유럽에서 어떤 남자가 한국으로 왔는데,

from Europe to South Korea and he tries to learn South Korean;

한국어를 배우려고 노력해요

if he doesn’t speak well,

말을 잘 못하더라도,

we’re enjoying watching him and enjoy listening to him.

흥미롭게 지켜보고, 이야기하는 게 즐거울 거예요.

So think that’s the different way.

반대로 생각하면 됩니다.

If you’re here in London,

런던에 오시거나,

if you’re here in England, you should just try,

영국에 오신다면 그냥 말하려고 노력하세요.

make them enjoy to listen, to look.

영국인들도 영어를 배우려는 사람과 재미있게 대화할 겁니다.

I think this is most important to us,

이렇게 소통하는 게 정말 중요하다고 생각해요.

영어를 배우는 사람에게

and this is the most important part.

정말 큰 도움을 줄 수 있어요.
