and today we’re going to look at something

that most learners of English find very difficult.

The difference between /i/

/i/

and /i:/. If you master these sounds,

your pronunciation will become much clearer

and you won’t make mistakes like this:

Yes, it was a sheep with big guns.

Watch what happens

to my mouth when I make the /i:/ sound. /i:/.

내가 /i:/ 소리를 낼 때 내 입에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 보세요. /나:/.

Now, watch what happens when I make the /i/ sound. /i/.

자, 제가 /i/ 소리를 낼 때 어떤 일이 일어나는지 보세요. /나/.

For both sounds,

두 소리 모두

my tongue touches my bottom teeth,

혀가 아랫니에 닿지

but for the longer /i:/ sound, my mouth becomes wider,

만 /i:/ 소리가 길어지면 입이 넓어져서

so that I’m almost smiling.

For example, /i:/, beat.

Whereas, when I make the shorter /i/ sound,
