영어의 5가지 일반적인 관용구를 살펴보겠습니다.

미국 메릴랜드에서 온 Sofia라는 표현을 설명하는 데 도움을 줄 친구가 있습니다.

All right, so first expression is:

좋습니다. 첫 번째 표현은 이렇습니다.

we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

우리가 그곳에 도착하면 그 다리를 건너겠습니다 .

It means to face the problem when the problem arises.

문제가 생겼을 때 문제를 직시하라는 뜻이다.

For example,

예를 들어,

if your mom is having a birthday party and you

엄마가 생일 파티를 하고 있는데

need to go buy a present,

선물을 사러 가야 하는데

but you don't know what to buy,

무엇을 사야할지 모르겠다면

you might say,

oh we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

오, 거기에 도착하면 다리를 건너자고 말할 수 있습니다. 그녀의 생일이 가까워지면

Meaning we’ll buy the present

선물을 사겠다는 의미입니다

when it’s closer to her birthday.

Second idiom: burn the bridge.

두 번째 관용구: 다리를 태우다.

What does it mean?

무슨 뜻이에요?

To burn the bridge means cutting off relationships

다리를 태우는 것은 관계

or opportunities.

나 기회를 차단하는 것을 의미합니다.

For example,

예를 들어,

if you’re leaving from one job to another,

한 직장에서 다른 직장으로 이직하는 경우

you want to leave on good terms,

좋은 조건으로 떠나고 싶기

so you might want to say something like,

때문에

oh don’t burn that bridge.

오 다리를 태우지 마십시오. 그 관계를

Don't cut off completely that relationship.

완전히 끊지 마세요 .

Clever one.

영리한 사람.

Number three: bite the bullet.

세 번째: 총알을 깨물어라.

What does it mean?

무슨 뜻이에요?

To bite the bullet means to do something even

bite the bullet은

though you don't really want to do it, to say

정말 하고 싶지 않은 일을 하는 것,

something very unpleasant.

매우 불쾌한 말을 하는 것을 의미합니다.

For example, suppose you have to stay awake

예를 들어, 다음 날 아침에 할

at night for a project for the next morning,

프로젝트를 위해 밤에 깨어 있어야 한다고 가정하면

somebody might tell you,

누군가가 당신에게 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다

oh you have to bite the bullet and just stay awake

and do the project.

Sometimes it is what it is.

때때로 그것은 그것이 무엇인지입니다. 좋아

Okay great.

Very useful.

Number four: cut somebody some slack.

넷째: 누군가를 느슨하게 하십시오.

What does it mean?

To cut somebody some slack is to make allowances

Cut someone some slack은 누군가에게 여유를 주고

for somebody and to give them additional freedom or leeway.

추가적인 자유나 여유를 주는 것입니다.

For example, if you’re a teacher out of school,

예를 들어, 당신이 학교 밖의 교사이고 하루가

and one child at the end of the day is not paying attention

끝날 때 한 아이가 주의를 기울이지 않는 등의 경우,

or something like that,

you might say, oh cut them some slack

당신은 말할 수 있습니다

because it’s the end of the day.

And they’re tired

그리고 그들은 피곤

and they’re thinking about going home soon.

하고 곧 집에 갈 생각을 하고 있습니다.

Number five and last one: it’s not rocket science.

다섯 번째이자 마지막 것입니다. 로켓 과학이 아닙니다.

What does it mean?

무슨 뜻이에요?

It’s not rocket science is one of my favourites.

그것은 로켓 과학이 아닙니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 것 중 하나입니다.

It means that something is not as complicated or as

그것은 무언가가

hard as rocket science would be.

로켓 과학만큼 복잡하거나 어렵지 않다는 것을 의미합니다.

For example, let’s say you’re baking a cake and,

예를 들어, 당신이 케이크를 굽고 있는데,

say, somebody is helping you

누군가가 당신을 도와주고

but you’re having a hard time with it.

있지만 당신은 그것으로 인해 어려움을 겪고 있다고 가정해 봅시다.

Somebody might say,

it’s not rocket science

because baking a cake is supposed to be

케이크를 굽는 것이 로켓 과학을 하는 것에

really easy compared to doing rocket science.
