Using the second conditional to talk about imaginary situations

So this is how we make the second conditional.

If with past simple, and would or wouldn’t

If は過去形、 and は

with an infinitive without to.

to なしの不定詞で、and は would または would not です。

In speaking, people often use the short form of would.

話すとき は、would の短縮形をよく使います。

I’d, he’d, we’d.

私は、彼は、私たちはそうしました。

If I went back in time, I’d go to the 1980s.

時間を遡るとしたら 、1980 年代に戻ります。

You will also often hear the phrase, if I could,

if I could, meaning if it was possible for me.

if I could, if I could というフレーズもよく耳 にします。

If I could be an animal, I’d be a seal.

私が動物になれるとしたら 、アザラシになります。

If I could speak to seals, I’d tell them about my life.

アザラシと話すことができたら 、自分の人生について話します。

And that’s why I love water.

Also, we say if I were you, to give advice.
