Alternatives to 4 common English phrases

Hello everybody.

So, in today’s video, you’re going to be seeing

common alternatives to four words or phrases that you will

have probably heard many times in your English learning journey.

Hello, thank you, I don’t know and goodbye.

And these alternatives are going to be coming from real people.

So, helping me today is Phil and Rick, Lizzie and Tessa, Mukesh, Helen, Harriet,

Dane and Jimmy.

So, let’s begin by seeing how our guests would say hello in the real world.

Right, right, right.

Let’s begin with how would you say hello?

I would say... Hey. Hi.

Hi. Hi. So, I would say, hi Dave. Hiya. Hiya.

There we go. You alright? You alright? How’s it going?

So, these phrases here can be used as direct alternatives

for the phrase hello.

However, the phrase you alright or its full form,

are you all right can be used both to say hello and to also ask how somebody is.

And next is, how do you say I don’t know?

I don’t know. Dunno.

I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s like I dunno.

What else would I say? Not a clue. I haven’t a clue.

I haven’t got a clue. I haven’t the foggiest. I have no idea.

There you go. Yeah. I have no idea.

So, yes, the full form of this phrase is technically I don’t know.

However, in natural speech, the I is quite often not said,

and the remaining don’t and know merge together to be pronounced as dunno.

And with these phrases, just be aware that in natural speech

they can have a few different forms, just because some words can be left out.

The next one is how do you say thank you?

Thanks very much. Thanks. Cheers mate. Cheers.

You’d say cheers. Do we say cheers? Cheers. Right, cheers. Cheers, mate. Cheers.

Ta very much. Ta.

Nice one. Nice one.

So, the most important thing to know about these

phrases is that cheers, ta and nice one are common

in British English, however are pretty

uncommon in American English.

And finally, how would you say goodbye? See you later.

See you later. See you later.

Bye.

Bye bye. I couldn’t think of it. See you soon.

So, the only thing I really want to add here are my two

own personal favourite ways of saying goodbye in British English.

The first phrase I want to highlight is the phrase,

catch you later, which is generally

quite a modern phrase and popular amongst the younger generations

here in Britain.

And the second phrase I want to highlight is

the phrase cheerio, which again is a slightly older phrase,

and probably more popular amongst older generations.

So, there you go.
