Tips for online job interviews Part 1

Hello, hello guys.

As it’s the start of a new year,

some of us may be starting to think about looking

for a new job.

With lots of interviews taking place online,

these might seem even more stressful, especially

if they’re in English.

But don’t worry,

as today I’ll be sharing some tips for online interviews.

Let’s start with some general but key aspects to bear in mind.

Make sure you’re familiar with the organisation.

You’ll give a good impression by being already familiar

with the work of the organisation

and the opportunities available.

For this, look at the company’s website,

seek out articles on blogs,

follow the company’s

social networks and even research the industry

and related trends or news.

Understand what the job entails.

Understanding what the organisation is looking

for will help you to prepare for questions

that they may ask you in the interview

and identify the skills you have that are important for the job.

You could even prepare

a short summary about yourself with relevant qualities,

experiences and achievements.

Get organised and be punctual.

Make sure you install

the software necessary for the interview

and always test it in advance.

Join the meeting at least a few minutes

early as well so you can make sure everything

is working properly on the day.

Do a practice run with a friend in advance of the interview.

Record it and then watch it back to assess your performance.

Concentrate on how your body language

or tone comes across on a screen.

Look professional.

Just because it’s

online you should still consider your appearance.

Dress smartly but keep your clothes simple

and avoid patterns.

Some patterns don’t work well on video and can distract

or annoy the interviewer.

Stripes, for example,

can run together and look like a snake on your shirt.

Ensure your background isn’t messy.

You want something neutral, but not boring.

Something with some plants,

bookcases and appropriate décor can help.

Some apps offer virtual backgrounds,

but don’t use them during an interview

as the interviewer might wonder

why you’re hiding your real background,

or something could go wrong and distract everybody.

Make sure there is enough light

and that you are in a quiet place.

These will help ensure things run smoothly

and avoid any uncomfortable situations or distractions

for everyone involved.

Keep notes in a clear place.

Make sure to have

your application in front of you and not below because

if you’re looking down,

that can affect your voice and you may be harder to understand.

It is a good idea to have your notes

in English up on a pinboard or maybe on some Post-it Notes

and even on a screen,

but not blocking the interview window.

Anything that avoids rustling papers or making it difficult

for you to find information you need quickly.

Display confidence.

In some cases,

the interviewer won’t be able to see you or vice versa,

so it’s important to display enthusiasm with your voice.

Speak clearly and be aware of your body language.

If you’re on camera,

smile and look at the screen while the interviewer speaks,

but at the webcam when you reply

so you can make eye contact.
