to express different emotions.

Yesterday was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.

So, can you guess what each idiom means in this story?

Once upon a time, a wizard came to my door.

He started to explain a quest to me.

His explanation seemed to go on for hours.

So, I started to zone out.

But I hadn't been listening.

He suddenly blew a fuse and told me what I had to do once again.

I had to enter a large cave and bring back the evil ball

of chocolate so that it could be destroyed.

I started my journey and walked through a forest.

It was dark and quiet. So, I was really on edge.

I had a sinking feeling that something bad was going to happen.

Suddenly, a monster appeared and scared the living daylights out of me.

Just as I was fighting the monster with my sword,

a princess wandered past and complimented my fighting skills.

It was here that I realised I was completely head over heels in love.

I asked her if she wanted to join me in my quest, but she said she was busy.

I showed her my impressive sword, but she still said she was busy.

Feeling a bit down in the dumps, I continued on my quest.

I walked for days and days with nobody to speak to and nothing to do.

I was getting really fed up. Eventually, I found the cave.

I went inside, and there in front of me was the evil ball of chocolate.

I was over the moon.

I picked it up and went back to the wizard.

The wizard immediately ate the chocolate ball.

This ball of chocolate isn't actually evil.

I was just hungry, he said. I was extremely cheesed off.

Let's go over the story again and look at each idiom in more detail.

So, I started to zone out.

To zone out means to stop paying attention and not

see or hear what is around you for a short period of time.

Maybe if you're feeling tired in class, and the teacher talks

for a long period of time, you might start to zone out.

He suddenly blew a fuse and told me what I had to do once again.

To blow a fuse means to become very angry.

So, you might blow a fuse if someone scratches your car.

It was dark and quiet. So, I was really on edge.

If you are on edge about something, you're nervous and not relaxed.

So, you might be on edge if you're waiting for your exam results.

Here's another example.

I was on edge throughout the whole football match.

I had a sinking feeling that something bad was going to happen.

To have a sinking feeling about something means to have a feeling

that something bad is going to happen.

For example, you might have a sinking feeling

about a presentation because you haven't planned for it very well.

Here's another example.

I had a sinking feeling when I heard the phone ring.

Suddenly, a monster appeared and scared the living daylights out of me.

To scare the living daylights out of someone means to frighten

someone very much.

Here's another example.

You scared the living daylights out of me yelling like that.

It was here that I realised I was completely head over heels in love.

To be head over heels means to be completely in love with someone.

For example.

Laura was head over heels in love with Chris.

I showed her my impressive sword, but she still said she was busy.

Feeling a bit down in the dumps I continued on my quest.

To be down in the dumps means to be unhappy.

For example.

She's a bit down in the dumps because she failed one of her exams.

I walked for days and days with nobody to speak to and nothing to do.

I was getting really fed up.

To be fed up with something or to be fed up by something

means to be annoyed, bored or disappointed,

especially by something that you have experienced for too long.

For example. He is fed up with his job.

I went inside and there in front of me was the evil ball of chocolate.

I was over the moon.

To be over the moon about something or to be over the moon with something

means to be very pleased.

For example. She was over the moon with her new bike.

This ball of chocolate isn't actually evil.

I was just hungry, he said. I was extremely cheesed off.

To be cheesed off about something or to be cheesed off with something means to

be annoyed or disappointed with someone or something.

For example.

She's a bit cheesed off with her boyfriend at the moment.
