English Listening Practice - Being Sick

So I finally went to the doctor

and asked what was going on.

So I went to the doctor at the

end of last week, and the

doctor said that I needed to

take these antibiotics, that I

have a bacterial infection,

and I needed to get some

throat lozenges.

I don't know if you know what throat

lozenges are, but they're like

these little things that if you have

a sore throat, you eat them.

And then the doctor said, don't talk,

which is really hard for me.

They didn't say, don't talk.

They just said, avoid talking

for long periods of time

and avoid talking loudly.

So I don't know if you can hear it.

I still have a little bit

of a sore throat.

I know it's been like a month.

So it was about time

that I went to the doctor.

So this isn't really an English

lesson, or can I turn it into one?

Let's do that.

I had a sore throat, so I made

an appointment to see the doctor.

I called the doctor's office because

I needed a doctor's appointment.

I went to the doctor's appointment,

and the doctor diagnosed me

with a bacterial infection.

And then that's what the doctor

does when they figure

out what's wrong with you.

They diagnose.

And then the doctor said

the treatment.

What I needed to do

is I needed to take antibiotics.

So I got a prescription

and I needed to go to the drugstore.

Pharmacy is another word

for drugstore in Canada.

And the drugstore filled

my prescription.

That means I had to wait.

And they put the pills in this pill

bottle, and I was told to take.

What does it say here?

Take one capsule three times a day

for seven days.

So I think I'm on day three

or something like that.

So prescription.

That's when the doctor

tells the pharmacy or drugstore they

are allowed to give you drugs.

And then I took them home.

And I've been taking them.

I've been taking them as prescribed

to help with my sore throat.

So that's where I'm at.

Let me see, what else

can I teach you?

I didn't take any days off work.

I haven't called in sick.

Even though I'm not supposed

to talk a lot, I can still teach

my classes without talking too

loudly or without talking

for too long of a period of time.

But I did have to not, not do

a live stream last Friday, and I

don't know if I'm going to be

doing one this Friday as well.

It seems that if I raise my voice,

that's when you talk louder

than normal, or if I talk

for a long period of time, that's

when it gets a little bit sore.

So are things getting better?

That's the English term for

like, if you're sick and you want

to be normal again,

you say, are you getting better?

I think I'm getting

a little bit better.

I do have less energy than normal,

which is probably because

I'm fighting off an infection.

When you have an infection, you

fight off the infection or you

take some antibiotics to help

you fight off the infection.

So I think I'm feeling

a little bit better.

I'm just trying to think through

as an English lesson, did I use

all the words that I need to use

so that this is an effective.

It's a little update for you,

but also a little bit of a lesson.

So I booked a doctor's appointment.

I went to my doctor's appointment.

The doctor prescribed

some drugs or some medication.

We would use both words.

I would just say some

antibiotics or pills.

I went to the drugstore or pharmacy

and had the prescription filled.

That means they gave it

to me and I've been taking

them as prescribed.

So basically following

the instructions, taking

three a day,

about every eight hours apart.

Does that make sense?

No, it's got to be closer than that.

How long are you awake for?

Yeah, that's about right.

I take one in the morning when I

get home from work and before I go

to bed and then don't talk very

much and take throat lozenges.

I think these work a little

bit, although I don't

know, they're a little bit.

I wish I had gotten

a different flavor.

These are honey and lemon.

I usually like honey and lemon.

What else have I been doing?

What else can you do

for a sore throat?

I probably should be

drinking tea with honey.

I haven't been doing

that, but I will start.
