Why I'm Not Quitting My Day Job

So when I get busy at my teaching

job, I make less videos for YouTube.

And I'm sorry about that.

It's just the way life goes.

But sometimes some of you will email me or

you'll leave a comment saying, Bob, why don't you

quit your teaching job and just do YouTube full

time and start an online English learning academy.

And I'm not going to do that.

There's three reasons why I'm probably never going to do

that, at least not in the next few years.

And I'll explain them in this video.

So the first reason why I don't want to quit my day

job, as we would call it in English and just do YouTube

and teach English online in order to earn an income,

and it's actually an important reason for you as well.

Because I live in a vibrant English speaking world.

I constantly find ideas for new lessons

when I'm at work and when I'm

interacting with students and other teachers.

It's very important for my YouTube channel that I go

out from my farm, that I go to work, and

that I interact with almost 100 people a day.

And while I'm doing that, I'm always listening for little

words and phrases that I can build an English lesson

out of for all of you here on YouTube.

So the number one reason why I wouldn't want

to quit my job and just do YouTube and

teach English online is because that world breathes life

into this world, into the YouTube world.

If it was just me at home talking

to Jen, I wouldn't have as many ideas.

I wouldn't hear little phrases and think, oh, I can

build a whole lesson out of that phrase because there's

nine other phrases that are similar to it.

Or I might hear a word that's kind of funny and

think, oh, I can build a lesson out of that.

Instead, I would kind of just be here.

It would be very peaceful.

I would really enjoy that.

But going to work, interacting with people,

being in conversations, but also listening into

conversations, which I do sometimes.

I hope my colleagues and students aren't watching this, but

it is fun to just listen to the English language

and use that as a source for ideas.

So the number one reason, and the biggest reason why

I don't quit my day job as a teacher and

just do this is because it's a great source of

ideas that make great lessons for you.

Reason number two, I kind of like it.

I actually like being a teacher.

You can probably notice that when you watch my videos.

I like teaching people things.

Even when I was a kid, I liked teaching

my siblings and cousins how to play new games.

I just like doing it.

And when I go to work every day, I get to

do something I love and I get paid for it.

So the second reason why I don't

quit is because I like it.

And that doesn't just mean I selfishly enjoy it.

I like learning how to teach better.

I like learning about learning.

I like learning about teaching.

I like becoming a better teacher, and I do

like the students, and I do like my colleagues,

and I do like the life of a school.

It's kind of fun to be part of it.

So number two, I like doing it

and I've always liked doing it.

And I think the day when I stop liking it, if in

the future there's a day where I'm like, you know, this isn't

as enjoyable as it used to be, that might be the day

where I decide to shift gears and do more of this.

But for now, I love it.

So I'm gonna keep doing it.

The third reason why I'm going to keep teaching at

the school where I work is just really practical.

And those of you that have followed me for

a while know that I'm a very practical person.

I like things to make sense.

And at this point in my career, there's a nice

pension waiting for me in ten years. When I retire,

if I work for about ten more years, I can retire and

I will get a nice amount of money as a pension.

I also get benefits from the school.

And if I look at income and supporting

my family, YouTube has its ups and downs.

Working online and trying to earn a living as

an English teacher online and on YouTube or by

giving lessons would be a little bit unpredictable.

That might be a new word for you. But

my paycheque from my real job is very predictable.

Every 15 days, on the 15th and 30th of

the month, money goes in my bank account.

The same amount of money for the entire year.

Every two weeks or 26 weeks,

I think something like that.

No, wait, 24 weeks.

So sorry, 24 times a year. It's a good thing.

It's automatic and I don't have to

take care of it because I'm having

trouble remembering how often it happens.

But there is a regularity to it.

It's nice having a stable job.

That's what we would call it.

It's a very stable job.

It's nice working for a place that values

me, tells me how much they're going to

pay me, and then pays me regularly.

So the third reason is completely practical.

I get paid the same amount twice a month. I love that.

It really helps me support Jen and the

kids and my family and everything that I

need to do as a dad and husband. So.

So that's the third reason I'm going to keep doing it.

Because I like the money, I guess.

Sometimes my real job takes priority, but now I'm done.

I just have to go to graduation this evening.

Then I'm free for two, little over two months.

So I'm really looking forward to that.
