The Passive with GET - When and How to Use It - English Grammar

We all have funny stories. Right? We  tell them as part of a conversation.

That's why the passive with "get" works so well.  The passive with "be" tends to be more formal

and more typical of writing, but the passive with  "get" is very common in everyday spoken English.

We use "get" + the past participle of  the main verb. We don't name an agent.  

우리는 "get" + 본동사의 과거 분사를 사용합니다 . 우리는 대리인을 지명하지 않습니다.

There's no by-phrase. My husband  and I got lost. We got so confused.  

바이프레이즈가 없습니다. 남편 과 저는 길을 잃었습니다. 우리는 너무 혼란스러워.

We got all mixed up. This is more about describing  our state rather than receiving an action.  

우리는 모두 뒤섞였습니다. 이것은 조치를 받는 것보다 상태를 설명하는 데 더 가깝습니다 .

The passive with get is used with a lot of  verbs that suggest bad news or bad luck.

get이 포함된 수동태는 나쁜 소식이나 불운을 암시하는 많은 동사와 함께 사용됩니다.

Haley got fired. My former boss got arrested.

헤일리는 해고당했습니다. 제 전 상사가 체포되었습니다.

Did you get hurt? Be careful.  You'll get yourself killed!

Notice in that last example how we might  use a reflexive pronoun to suggest the

person's responsibility or  involvement in the matter.

But not all verbs have to  express something unfortunate.

Let me share a short text. Can you spot  all six examples of the passive with "get"?

My friend Emma just got married. It's rather  surprising because they got engaged only one month

top choice, and the semester starts next month. It  was a small wedding, and I'm happy I got invited.

It was a simple but beautiful ceremony. They  didn't get caught up with all the details.

Maybe more couples should plan  quick weddings like that one.

Do you see where I used the passive with "get"?

Look. Got married, got engaged, get hitched (which  is an informal way of saying "get married"),

get caught up.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the passive  with "get" can signal the start of some state

or a change in state as in: get engaged, get  married, get divorced, get elected, get drafted.

약혼, 결혼, 이혼, 당선, 징집과 같이 어떤 상태의 시작 또는 상태의 변화를 나타낼 수 있다는 것입니다.

All these actions mean that the  subject has some kind of new status.

이러한 모든 작업은 주제가 일종의 새로운 상태임을 의미합니다.

When was the last time you  got invited somewhere special?

When was the last time you got seriously lost?
