You know what's one of the harder things to hear?

듣기 힘든 말이 뭔지 아세요?

It's a word that's part of a contraction.

수축의 일부인 단어입니다.

Like the verb IS.

IS 동사처럼요.

We'll talk about IS and OF in this lesson.

이번 수업에서는 IS와 OF에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

IS, as you know, often contracts to a single letter: 'S.

아시다시피 IS는 종종 'S'라는 한 글자로 축약됩니다.

You heard a few examples earlier.

이전에 몇 가지 예를 들었습니다.

what's / it's / that's

뭐야 / 그게 / 그게

It's quick and it's quiet.

빠르고 조용해.

But you need to hear it in order to understand what someone's saying.

하지만 상대방의 말을 이해하려면 들어야 합니다.

OR...what someone is saying.

또는...누군가가 말하는 것.

As you heard, these contractions with IS are not always written.

아시다시피, 이러한 IS 축약형은 항상 쓰여지는 것은 아닙니다.

Look at these sentences.

이 문장들을 보세요.

Does each apostrophe + S stand for "is"?

각 아포스트로피 + S는 "is"를 의미합니까?

No.

아뇨.

Take a look.

보세요.

"Nick's dad" ...that's a possessive form. His dad.

"Nick's dad" ...소유격 형태입니다. 그의 아버지.

"It has been"...is the present perfect.

"It has been"은 현재완료입니다.

But in fast speech I'll use apostrophe + S

그러나 빠른 연설에서는 각 문장에 아포스트로피 + S를 사용합니다

in each of these sentences. Listen.

So your ear needs to recognize

그래서 당신의 귀는

what that 'S stands for.

'S'가 무엇을 의미하는지 인식할 필요가 있습니다.

OF is also quick and hard to catch.

OF도 빠르고 잡기 어렵습니다.

We can reduce the vowel sound to a schwa,

우리는 모음 소리를 슈와로 줄일 수 있지만,

but we might even drop the F altogether.

심지어 F를 완전히 버릴 수도 있습니다.

So instead of "one of the harder things,"

따라서 "one of the hard things" 대신에

you may hear "one uh the harder things."

"one uh the hard things"라는 말을 들을 수 있습니다.
