3 Surprising Patterns with the Present Tense

Hi everyone. Let's take a look at three surprising  but common patterns with present tense verbs. At

First, we can use the simple present for  future scheduled events. Context is key.

The same sentence can have a present or  future meaning. Look the red-eye flight

Sentence A tells me this is a specific situation.  We're talking about a future scheduled trip.

Sentence B tells me about a regularly repeating  schedule. We can use the simple present for

Looking at your personal calendar, you  might use a mix of the simple present,

All these sentences refer to the future,  and the uses of the simple present are

connected to a schedule, especially  to official or professional events.

Second, the present progressive can be  used for habits or frequent actions.

This pattern works well for complaints and  negative actions. He's forever pointing out

others faults and never looking at his own. She's constantly doubting herself.

Think of a habit or a tendency you have. Can you  tell me about it using the present progressive?

Note that we can use the same logic and  shift back to the past for past habits.

Third, the simple present can be used for plots,  narratives, and jokes. Why is this surprising?

Stories are about things that  happened, so you'd think we'd

Now here's a joke you can learn  to tell. It's short enough to
