Our story today is called the Unexpected gift.

오늘의 이야기는 예상치 못한 선물입니다.

Tom was at his desk when a large  package showed up by the office door.

톰이 책상에 앉아 있을 때 사무실 문에 큰 패키지가 나타났습니다.

He hadn't ordered anything,  so this was unexpected.

그는 아무것도 주문하지 않았기 때문에 이것은 예상치 못한 일이었습니다.

His coworkers gathered around as Tom ripped  open the box, eager to see what was inside.

톰이 상자를 뜯어 열자 그의 동료들이 모여서 안에 무엇이 있는지 보고 싶어했습니다.

We'll review the important vocabulary that  you need to know as we read the story.

우리는 이야기를 읽으면서 알아야 할 중요한 어휘를 검토할 것입니다.

First, let's discuss to show up.

먼저, 등장 방식에 대해 논의해 보겠습니다.

This means to arrive or appear either  unexpectedly or after being awaited,  

이는 예상치 못하게 또는 기다렸다가 도착하거나 나타나는 것을 의미하는데 ,

which means someone expects you.

이는 누군가가 당신을 기대하고 있다는 것을 의미합니다.

For example, she showed up  late because of the traffic.

예를 들어, 그녀는 교통 체증으로 인해 늦게 나타났다.

So in this case, she arrived, it was expected.

그러니 이 경우에는 그녀가 도착했고, 그것은 예상된 일이었습니다.

Or you could say I was in my PJ's, my pajamas.

아니면 잠옷을 입고 있었다고 할 수도 있겠죠.

I was in my PJ's when my friends  showed up at my house with pizza.

제가 잠옷을 입고 있을 때 친구들이 피자를 들고 제 집에 나타났습니다.

Now this could be expected or unexpected,  

이것은 예상할 수 있는 것일 수도 있고 예상치 못한 것일 수도 있습니다. 이는

it depends on the context, but we  commonly use this when it's a surprise.

맥락에 따라 달라지지만 일반적으로 이것은 놀라운 일일 때 사용합니다.

Let's discuss.

논의해 보자.

To gather around.

모여들다.

This means to come together in a group,  often to look at or to listen to something.

이는 함께 모여서 무언가를 보거나 듣는 것을 의미합니다.

So maybe you and all your friends gathered around  

그러니 여러분과 친구들 모두 컴퓨터 앞에 모여서

the computer to watch the funny  video or the J Force English video.

재밌는 영상이나 J Force 영어 영상을 시청해 보는 건 어떨까요?

You can commonly use this in a workplace  setting and say the employees gathered  

이 표현은 직장에서 흔히 사용할 수 있으며, 직원들이

around the conference table for the announcement.

회의 테이블 주위에 모여 발표를 들었다고 말할 수 있습니다.

Now let's talk about to RIP open our  phrasal verb, something that maybe you  

이제 어구 동사를 RIP으로 여는 것에 대해 이야기해 보겠습니다.

do when there's an unexpected package or  envelope or a gift you're excited about.

예상치 못한 패키지나 봉투, 혹은 기대되는 선물이 있을 때 할 법한 표현입니다.

This means to tear something  apart quickly and forcefully.

이는 무언가를 빠르고 강력하게 찢어 놓는 것을 의미합니다 .

But this often refers to pakaging O like  I said, boxes, presence, envelope's.

하지만 이는 종종 포장을 의미하는데, 앞서 말했듯이 상자, 존재, 봉투 등을 의미합니다.

If you RIP open the envelope,  you might RIP the papers.

봉투를 찢어 열면 서류도 찢어질 수 있습니다.

So notice here we have the verb RIP, which  means to tear, to damage and then RIP.

여기서 RIP이라는 동사가 있는데, 찢다, 손상시키다를 의미하고 RIP이라는 단어도 있습니다. '

Open is our phrasal verb to mean  to open something forcefully.

열다'는 우리의 어구 동사로 무언가를 강제로 여는 것을 의미합니다.

Let's continue our story.

이야기를 계속해 보겠습니다.

To everyone's surprise, out came a  bright pink Flamingo lawn ornament.

모두가 놀란 것은 밝은 분홍색 플라밍고 잔디 장식이었습니다.

Baffled Tom helding up for everyone to see.

당황한 톰은 모든 사람이 볼 수 있도록 일어섰다.

Is this some sort of joke?

이게 무슨 농담이에요?

He asked, trying to wrap his  head around the bizarre gift.

그는 그 기괴한 선물을 이해하려고 노력하면서 물었다.

Lisa, his coworker, smirked.

그의 동료인 리사는 빙긋 웃었다.

Maybe it's a hint that you need a vacation.

휴가가 필요하다는 힌트일 수도 있죠.

Let's review to be baffled.

당황스러울 정도로 검토해 보자.

Did you notice that baffled?

당황한 걸 알아차렸나요?

This means to be confused by something.

이는 무언가에 혼란을 느낀다는 뜻입니다.

So notice this sentence structure.

그럼 이 문장 구조를 주목해 보세요.

I was baffled.

나는 당황했다.

This is the passive form.

이것은 수동태입니다.

The subject I is not doing the action.

주어 I은 동작을 하고 있지 않습니다.

The subject is receiving the action.

주어가 동작을 받고 있습니다.

I was baffled by the strange instructions.

나는 그 이상한 지시에 당황했다.

So as the active form, what would you say?

그럼 활성형으로는 뭐라고 말할까요?

The instructions or the strange  instructions baffled me, confused me.

그 지시사항이나 이상한 지시사항은 나를 당황하게 하고 혼란스럽게 했습니다.

So this is commonly used in the past of let's  review to wrap one's head around something.

따라서 이것은 일반적으로 무언가를 이해한다는 의미로 과거형 'let's review'에 사용됩니다.

This is an idiom.

이것은 관용어입니다.

It means to understand  something difficult or complex.

어렵거나 복잡한 것을 이해한다는 뜻입니다.

For example, I can't wrap my head  around how to use English articles.

예를 들어, 영어 관사를 어떻게 사용해야 할지 전혀 이해가 안 됩니다.

So English articles, that's the something that's  

영어 기사는

difficult or complex that you  need to wrap your head around.

어렵고 복잡해서 이해해야 할 부분입니다.

Would you agree with that?

How about this one?

이건 어때요? 지침을 이해

It took me a while to wrap my  head around the instructions.

하는 데 시간이 좀 걸렸습니다 .

At first I was baffled.

처음에는 당황스러웠습니다.

I was baffled by the instructions.

나는 그 지시에 당황했다.

But then I wrapped my head around them.

하지만 나는 그것들을 이해하기 시작했습니다.

Let's review to smirk.

웃음을 터뜨리며 복습해 보자.

To smirk this is to smile in a  self satisfied or sarcastic way.

이렇게 웃는다는 것은 자만하거나 비꼬는 방식으로 웃는 것을 말합니다.

He smirked when he corrected  his English teacher's grammar.

그는 영어 선생님의 문법을 교정해주며 빙긋이 웃었다 .

Maybe you have done that.

어쩌면 당신도 그렇게 했을지도 몰라요.

Let's review a hint.

힌트를 다시 살펴보겠습니다.

So this is a noun.

그러니까 이것은 명사예요.

A hint is a small suggestion or clue  that gives information indirectly.

힌트는 간접적으로 정보를 제공하는 작은 제안이나 단서입니다.

Let's review this one.

I can't give you the answer, but here's a hint.

답을 드릴 수는 없지만 힌트는 드리겠습니다. 퍼즐을 풀거나 질문에 답하는 데

Here's a clue, a piece of information to help  you solve the puzzle or answer the question.

도움이 되는 단서, 정보입니다 .

But let's review this.

하지만 이것을 검토해 보겠습니다.

She hinted that she wanted to  go to Hawaii for her birthday.

그녀는 생일에 하와이에 가고 싶다는 뜻을 내비쳤다.

Ah, so notice here.

아, 여기 주목하세요.

It's a verb she hinted in the past.

그것은 그녀가 과거에 암시했던 동사입니다.

Simple.

단순한.

So she said it, but she said it indirectly.

그래서 그녀는 그렇게 말했지만 간접적으로 말했어요.

Oh, it sure would be nice to visit  somewhere warm and tropical, she hinted.

아, 따뜻하고 열대적인 곳을 방문하는 것도 좋을 것 같아요 .그녀가 암시했다.

Let's continue our story.

Maybe, Tom replied, still puzzled  by who could have sent it.

Lisa examined the label and gasped.

리사는 라벨을 살펴보더니 깜짝 놀랐다.

It's from the boss's office,  You're in for it now, she joked.

Tom's heart sank.

톰의 가슴이 덜컥 내려앉았다.

Was this some strange way  of saying he was in trouble?

이것은 그가 곤경에 처해 있다는 것을 이상한 방식으로 표현한 것이었나요?

Let's review to be puzzled.

당황스러울 정도로 검토해 보자.

Notice that pronunciation.

발음에 주의하세요.

Puzzled.

당황스럽다.

Puzzled.

당황스럽다.

This is the same as to be confused.

이는 혼동하는 것과 같습니다.

So now you can say I'm puzzled, I'm baffled,  I'm confused by the strange present.

그러니 지금은 당황스럽고, 당황스럽고, 이상한 선물 때문에 혼란스럽다고 말할 수 있겠죠.

This is the active form.

이것은 활성형입니다.

Remember, you can use the passive and say the  strange present puzzles baffles or confuses me.

수동태를 사용해서 이상한 현재 시제가 나를 당황하게 하거나 혼란스럽게 한다고 말할 수도 있다는 것을 기억하세요.

Let's review.

검토해 보겠습니다.

To gasp.

헐레벌떡.

To gasp this means to take a quick breath.

헐떡인다는 것은 숨을 크게 들이마신다는 뜻입니다.

And you do this when you're  in surprise or in shock.

그리고 당신은 놀라거나 충격을 받았을 때 이렇게 합니다.

Maybe because something baffled you.

아마도 무언가가 당신을 당황하게 했기 때문일 수도 있습니다.

The audience gasped when the magician  pulled a rabbit out of the Hut.

마술사가 오두막에서 토끼를 꺼내자 관객들은 입을 벌리고 놀랐다 .

Or she gasped when she saw the price of the dress.

아니면 그녀는 드레스의 가격을 보고 숨이 막힐 지경이었다.

So you can use this in more of a negative way.

그러니 이 표현을 좀 더 부정적인 방향으로 사용할 수도 있습니다.

That's so expensive.

너무 비싼데요.

That's ridiculous.

말도 안 돼요.

Or maybe it's because it was so cheap,  

아니면 너무 저렴해서 그런지,

but she thought it would be so  expensive, so she's excited.

엄청 비쌀 줄 알았는데, 그래서 설레는 건지.

Let's review to be in for it.

검토해 봅시다.

This is an expression.

이것은 표현입니다.

It means to be in trouble, so the  in for it represents in trouble.

곤경에 처한다는 뜻이므로, in은 곤경에 처해 있음을 나타냅니다.

I'll be in for it if I show up up late.

내가 늦게 나타나면 내가 그 일을 당하게 될 거야.

If I arrive late, this is the same as  I'll be in trouble if I show up late.

내가 늦게 도착하면, 늦게 나타나면 곤경에 처하는 것과 마찬가지입니다.

Let's look at someone's heart sinks.

누군가의 마음이 가라앉는 모습을 살펴보자.

This is when you feel a sudden disappointment.

갑자기 실망감을 느낄 때입니다.

It could also be because of fear.

두려움 때문일 수도 있습니다. 수업을 통과하려면 프레젠테이션을 해야

My heart sank when I found out I had to  give a presentation to pass the class.

한다는 사실을 알았을 때 가슴이 철렁했습니다 .

Sudden disappointment or fear?

갑작스러운 실망이나 두려움?

Her heart sank when she failed the exam.

그녀는 시험에 떨어지자 마음이 몹시 무거워졌다.

Let's continue the story.

이야기를 계속해 보겠습니다.

Feeling anxious, Tom tentatively knocked on  the boss's door to get to the bottom of it.

불안을 느낀 톰은 조심스럽게 사장님의 문을 두드려서 무슨 일이 일어났는지 알아보려고 했습니다.

Did you send me this?

이걸 나한테 보냈어?

He asked, holding up the Flamingo.

그는 플라밍고를 들어올리며 물었다.

His boss laughed.

그의 상사는 웃었다.

I wish I could take credit  for it, but it's not from me.

내가 그 공을 차지할 수 있다면 좋겠지만 , 그것은 나의 공로가 아닙니다.

Let's review tentatively.

잠정적으로 검토해 보겠습니다.

Tentatively.

잠정적으로.

This is an adverb.

이것은 부사입니다.

It means in a way that shows  hesitation or uncertainty.

이는 주저함이나 불확실함을 나타내는 방식을 의미합니다 .

So when he knocked on the door, he  tentatively knocked or she tentatively  

그래서 그가 문을 두드리자, 그는 주저하며 두드렸고, 그녀는 주저하며

raised her hand to ask the question.

손을 들어 질문했습니다.

He tentatively agreed to work late,  so he agreed, but with hesitation.

그는 늦게까지 일하는 데 주저하며 동의했지만 주저하면서 동의했다.

MMM, I guess if you really need me.

음, 정말 나를 필요로 한다면 그럴 수도 있겠지.

OK, tentatively, let's review the idiom  to get to the bottom of something.

This means to find out the real reason  for something or to solve a mystery.

이는 무언가의 진짜 이유를 찾아내거나 미스터리를 해결하는 것을 의미합니다.

The mystery of who sent Tom the Flamingo.

톰에게 플라밍고를 보낸 사람이 누구인지에 대한 미스터리.

You can say we need to get to the  bottom of why the project failed.

우리는 프로젝트가 실패한 이유를 밝혀야 한다고 말할 수 있습니다.

Understand the reason.

그 이유를 알아보세요.

Let's review.

검토해 보겠습니다.

To take credit for something.

뭔가에 대한 공을 차지함.

This means you claim  responsibility or recognition.

즉, 당신은 책임이나 인정을 요구한다는 의미입니다.

She tried to take credit for the idea.

그녀는 그 아이디어에 대한 공을 자기가 차지하려고 했습니다.

The idea is mine, even though it wasn't hers,  

그 아이디어는 그녀의 것이 아니더라도 내 것이었고,

or the credit for the project's success  goes to the entire team, not just me.

프로젝트 성공의 공로는 나 혼자가 아니라 팀 전체에게 돌아가야 합니다.

Let's continue the story.

Just then, Tom got an e-mail.

바로 그때, 톰에게 이메일이 왔습니다.

It was from a secret gift exchange he'd signed  up for months ago and completely forgotten.

Relieved, he returned to his desk.

그는 안도감을 느껴 책상으로 돌아갔다.

Let's review to sign up for something.

because this means to register or to  agree to participate in something.

I signed up for a yoga class next week.

The final part of the story.

이야기의 마지막 부분.

Well, he said, placing the Flamingo beside him.

그는 플라밍고를 옆에 두면서 말했습니다.

It looks like this is here to stay.

Let's look at the expression to be here to stay.

여기에 머물러 있다'는 표현을 살펴보겠습니다.

This means to remain for a long  time or to remain permanently.

이는 장기간 머무르 거나 영구히 머무르는 것을 의미합니다.

For example, during the pandemic, everyone  thought social distancing would be here to stay,  

예를 들어, 팬데믹 동안 모든 사람은 사회적 거리두기가 앞으로도 계속될 것이라고 생각했기

so everyone thought it would be here  permanently or for the long term.

때문에 모두가 이것이 영구적으로 또는 장기적으로 지속될 것이라고 생각했습니다.

Thankfully, it wasn't.
