This lesson is all about jokes, which is, of  course, something humorous to make you laugh.

Another name for a joke is a pun,  a word play, or a play on words.

농담의 또 다른 이름은 말장난, 말장난, 말장난입니다.

All three of these are the same, and  they're a joke about the English language,

about how words can sound the  same but have different meanings.

단어가 어떻게 동일하게 들리지만 의미가 다를 수 있는지에 대한 농담입니다.

And that makes it humorous.

It makes it a joke.

And maybe you've heard of a dad joke.

This is also a pun, and it's a very typical  stereotypical joke, an obvious joke that almost

So here's our first joke.

Now when I say get it, that  means do you understand?

Brie is a specific type of cheese.

브리(Brie)는 특정 유형의 치즈입니다.

It's a soft cheese and it's delicious.

Now what about debris?

이제 잔해는 어떻습니까?

Do you know what debris is?

잔해가 무엇인지 아시나요?

This is a noun, and debris represents  broken or small pieces of something whole.

이것은 명사이며, 파편은 전체의 부서진 조각이나 작은 조각을 나타냅니다.

So let's take an example.

그럼 예를 들어보겠습니다.

There was a storm, a really bad storm.

폭풍이 몰아쳤어요. 정말 심한 폭풍이었죠.

So you have something whole, maybe a barn.

But after the storm, that whole barn is in  tiny pieces, and those pieces are everywhere.

Those pieces are debris.

For example, there was a lot  of debris after the storm.

And notice my pronunciation compared to the  spelling debris E Do you notice that debris?

Brie sounds exactly like Brie cheese.

That's part of the joke.

So let's review our joke again.

So you can imagine there's tiny bits  of Brie, Brie cheese everywhere.

So the Brie cheese is the debris.

So now you understand this joke and  you can share it with your friends.

First you need to know what a scarecrow is.

먼저 허수아비가 무엇인지 알아야합니다.

A scarecrow is a model of a person that you put  in a field, and its purpose is to scare birds.

허수아비는 들판에 사람을 형상화한 모형으로 새에게 겁을 주기 위한 것입니다.

A crow is a type of bird, so  you want to scare the birds.

까마귀는 새의 일종이므로 새에게 겁을 주고 싶습니다.

Scare the crows away from the  field so they don't eat the crops.

까마귀가 농작물을 먹지 않도록 겁을 주어 들판에서 쫓아내세요.

Now what does a scarecrow do?

이제 허수아비는 무엇을 하는가?

It stands in a field.

그것은 들판에 서 있다.

So notice this part from our joke.

그러니 우리 농담에서 이 부분을 주목하세요.

Because he was outstanding in his  field, he was outstanding in his field.

그는 자신의 분야에서 탁월했기 때문에 자신의 분야에서도 탁월했습니다.

Now native speakers will use  the word out to say not at home,  

이제 원어민들은 집에 없다는 뜻으로 out이라는 단어를 사용하고,

and we often use out plus  gerund verb being the activity.

활동을 위해 out + 동명사 동사를 자주 사용합니다.

For example, my dad's out, my dad's  not at home, My dad's out shopping.

예를 들어, 아빠가 밖이세요, 아빠가 집에 없어요, 아빠가 쇼핑 중이세요.

It's explaining the activity  that he's doing away from home.

집 밖에서 하고 있는 활동을 설명하는 것입니다.

My dad's out shopping.

아빠는 쇼핑 중이세요.

So technically you could say the  scarecrow was out, not at home.

따라서 엄밀히 말하면 허수아비는 집에 없고 밖에 있었다고 말할 수 있습니다.

And what was he doing?

그리고 그는 무엇을 하고 있었나요?

The scarecrow was outstanding in his field.

허수아비는 자신의 분야에서 탁월했습니다.

Are you with me so far?

지금까지 나와 함께 있었나요?

But there's an expression to  be outstanding in one's field.

그런데 자기 분야에서 뛰어나다는 표현이 있어요.

This is an expression that means that you're  exceptionally good at your occupation.

당신의 직업이 유난히 뛰어나다는 뜻의 표현입니다.

My occupation is teaching  English as a second language.

제 직업은 제 2외국어로 영어를 가르치는 것입니다.

So if you think I'm doing an amazing job, you can  say, Jennifer, you're outstanding in your field.

그러니 내가 일을 훌륭하게 하고 있다고 생각하신다면 제니퍼, 당신은 당신 분야에서 탁월하다고 말씀해 보세요.

The field being teaching, teaching English.

분야는 가르치는 것, 영어를 가르치는 것입니다.

But let's say that I live on a farm and  there is a big field on my property.

When you knead dough, you press dough,  which is a mixture of flour, water and eggs.

반죽을 반죽할 때 밀가루, 물, 계란을 섞은 반죽을 눌러줍니다.

You press dough repeatedly  and firmly with your hands.

반죽을 손으로 반복해서 단단하게 누릅니다.

And of course, a Baker is someone  who bakes bread, cookies, cakes,  

물론 제빵사는 빵, 쿠키, 케이크,

and other desserts as their occupation.

기타 디저트를 직업으로 굽는 사람을 의미합니다.

So a Baker of course needs dough  every single day as part of their job.

따라서 제빵사는 업무의 일환으로 매일 반죽이 필요합니다 .

Now notice the pronunciation of need.

이제 need의 발음에 주목하세요.

What does it sound like the verb to need?

필요하다는 동사는 어떻게 들리나요?

And did you know that dough is  a slang expression for money?

그리고 Dough가 돈을 뜻하는 속어 표현이라는 사실을 알고 계셨나요?

So if you said I need some  dough, it means you need money.

그러니까 돈이 좀 필요하다고 했다면 돈이 필요하다는 뜻이에요.

The Baker kneaded dough.

베이커는 반죽을 반죽했습니다.

This is literally what the Baker did.

이것은 말 그대로 베이커가 한 일입니다.

The Baker kneaded dough.

베이커는 반죽을 반죽했습니다.

The Baker needed money.

베이커에게는 돈이 필요했습니다.

So now you understand why I used to be a Baker.

이제 제가 왜 제빵사였는지 이해하셨을 겁니다.

Because I needed dough.

반죽이 필요했기 때문이죠. 알

How many letters are there  in the English alphabet?

Of course there are 26 letters.

The person in this joke knows 25 letters,

so it means that they don't know  one letter of the English alphabet.

영어 알파벳 중 한 글자도 모른다는 의미입니다.

The one letter that they  don't know is the letter Y.

그들이 모르는 한 글자는 Y입니다.

This explains the I don't  know why part of the joke,  

이것은 농담의 일부인 I don't Know Why를 설명합니다.

but of course the letter Y  sounds like the question why?

하지만 물론 Y는 왜?라는 질문처럼 들립니다.

Why?

왜?

It's exactly the same pronunciation.

완전 똑같은 발음이에요.

So said another way, I don't know why  I only know 25 letters of the alphabet.

달리 말하면, 나는 왜 알파벳 25개만 알고 있는지 모르겠습니다.

So now you know joke #4.

이제 농담 #4를 알게 되었습니다.

This is probably a dad joke.

이것은 아마도 아빠의 농담일 것이다.

I don't know if it was very funny.

It probably made you roll your eyes a little bit.

So let me explain it to you.

Of course you know what a plate is.

And in our joke, we have one  plate saying to another plate.

그리고 우리의 농담에는 한 접시가 다른 접시에게 말하는 것이 있습니다.

Dinner's on me tonight.

오늘 저녁은 나야.

Now, this is a joke because there's a  literal meaning and a figurative meaning.

자, 이것은 문자 그대로의 의미와 비유적인 의미가 있기 때문에 농담입니다.

So the literal meaning You eat dinner on a plate.

그래서 문자 그대로의 의미는 당신이 접시에 저녁을 먹는다는 것입니다.

So of course dinner is on the plate tonight  because that's where you eat dinner.

물론 오늘 저녁은 접시에 담아야 합니다. 왜냐하면 그곳에서 저녁을 먹기 때문입니다.

But let's talk about the figurative meaning.

그러나 비유적인 의미에 대해 이야기합시다.

Let's say I'm out for dinner  at a restaurant with my friends

and towards the end of the meal when the  bill comes, I say dinner's on me tonight.

That means I'm paying for dinner tonight.

So you definitely want to go out for dinner with  me because I always say dinner's on me tonight.

So that's why this is a funny joke,  because there are two separate meanings.

There's the literal meaning you eat dinner on  a plate and there's a figurative meaning where

when you say dinner's on me tonight,  it means you're paying for dinner.

Now you don't only have to use this expression  with meals, you can use it with other things.

For example, the movies on me tonight.

I'm paying for the movie The movies on Me Tonight.
