You Need To Fix These Mistakes RIGHT NOW (Advanced English Grammar)

Please, please, please stop making  these English grammar mistakes.

제발, 제발, 이런 영어 문법 실수를 저지르지 마세요.

Today we're going to review some common grammar  mistakes that my advanced students make.

오늘은 고급 학생들이 저지르는 몇 가지 일반적인 문법 실수를 검토해 보겠습니다.

Now, even if you're still a beginner, you'll be

surprised to see that these mistakes  are actually more beginner mistakes.

And make sure you watch right until the end,  because I saved the most common mistake for last.

This sentence has one mistake in it.

Now, these are real sentences by real  students of mine in the finely fluent Academy.

I review example sentences from  my students every single day,

and these are the mistakes that they commonly  make, that we're correcting in this lesson.

학생들이 흔히 저지르는 실수를 이번 수업에서 바로잡습니다.

So do you know what this mistake is?

그럼 이 실수가 무엇인지 아시나요?

The mistake is with track record.

실수는 실적에 있습니다.

Now we have one of one of the best track record,  so one of suggests that there's more than one.

이제 우리는 최고의 실적 중 하나를 보유하고 있으므로 그 중 하나는 둘 이상의 실적이 있음을 시사합니다.

So the noun needs to be plural.

그래서 명사는 복수형이어야 합니다.

The correct sentence is this machine has  one of the best track records in its group.

올바른 문장은 이 기계가 그룹 내 최고의 실적 중 하나를 가지고 있다는 것입니다.

Our next sentence.

다음 문장입니다.

Your assignment was late.

당신의 임무가 늦었습니다.

Please explain why you failed  to do What's the mistake?

왜 실패했는지 설명해 주세요. 무엇이 잘못되었나요?

The mistake is leaving out  the object you need to say.

실수는 말해야 할 대상을 생략하는 것입니다.

Please explain why you failed to do it and it  represents the assignment which was already said.

실패한 이유를 설명해 주세요. 이는 이미 말한 과제를 나타냅니다.

Now, even though it's obvious  you're talking about the assignment,  

이제 과제에 대해 이야기하고 있는 것이 분명하더라도

you need an object here grammatically.

여기에는 문법적으로 개체가 필요합니다.

Our next sentence, being a great communicator  in all situations, set you up for success.

다음 문장은 모든 상황에서 훌륭한 의사소통자가 되어 성공을 위한 준비를 갖추는 것입니다.

What's the mistake here?

여기서 실수는 무엇입니까?

It's set you up.

그것은 당신을 설정했습니다.

This is the wrong verb conjugation,  

이것은 잘못된 동사 활용입니다.

because we have this gerund expression being  a great communicator in all situations.

이 동명사 표현은 모든 상황에서 훌륭한 의사소통 수단이 되기 때문입니다.

Now students will often look  at that in all situations,  

이제 학생들은 모든 상황에서 그것을 자주 보게 될 것이며,

and they think that's what you  need to conjugate the verb with.

동사를 활용해야 하는 것이 바로 그것이라고 생각합니다.

But it's not.

하지만 그렇지 않습니다.

It's the gerund expression which is being  a great communicator in all situations.

어떤 상황에서도 훌륭한 의사소통이 되는 동명사 표현입니다.

And all of this is the subject it.

그리고 이 모든 것이 주제입니다.

If you had to choose a subject for it,  it would be the subject it or this.

주제를 선택해야 한다면 그것은 주제 it 또는 this일 것입니다.

This sets you up for success.

이것이 당신의 성공을 위한 준비입니다.

So you need to add an S to that  verb because it's conjugated with  

따라서 해당 동사에 S를 추가해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 동사는 주어로 활용되고

it as the subject, and it's the present simple.

현재형이기 때문입니다.

Now, if you had a noun, you would say  this situation sets you up for success.

이제 명사가 있다면 이 상황이 성공을 위한 준비라고 말할 것입니다.

That's the singular noun.

그게 단수 명사예요.

Or you could say all situations.

아니면 모든 상황을 말할 수도 있습니다.

Now this is plural.

이제 이것은 복수형입니다.

It's they all situations set you up for success.

모든 상황이 당신을 성공으로 이끌었습니다.

So with the noun, you conjugate  it with singular or plural.

따라서 명사는 단수 또는 복수로 활용됩니다.

But when the sentence starts with a  gerund verb, being is conjugated as it.

하지만 문장이 동명사로 시작하면 being이 그대로 활용됩니다.

How about this sentence?

이 문장은 어떻습니까?

I want to run something to you.

나는 당신에게 뭔가를 실행하고 싶습니다.

Do you know what the mistake is?

실수가 무엇인지 아시나요?

Well, technically this is grammatically  correct, but it's the literal meaning.

음, 기술적으로는 문법적으로는 정확하지만 문자 그대로의 의미입니다.

I want to run something.

나는 뭔가를 실행하고 싶다.

Maybe this iPad.

아마 이 아이패드일 겁니다.

I want to run something to you now, my student.

나는 지금 당신에게 뭔가를 말하고 싶습니다, 학생.

When they use this, they were trying to use the  expression to run something by or past someone,  

그들이 이것을 사용할 때, 그들은 누군가에 의해 무언가를 실행하거나 지나가기 위해 표현을 사용하려고 했습니다.

which is when you share an idea with someone  in order to get feedback on that idea.

이는 아이디어에 대한 피드백을 얻기 위해 누군가와 아이디어를 공유하는 경우입니다.

So the mistake here is using the wrong preposition  

따라서 여기서 실수는 잘못된 전치사를 사용하는 것입니다.

which can entirely change the meaning  because now it's not the expression.

이는 의미를 완전히 바꿀 수 있습니다. 이제 표현이 아니기 때문입니다.

I want to share an idea to get feedback.

피드백을 받기 위해 아이디어를 공유하고 싶습니다.

Now it's I want to literally run something to you,  

이제 저는 문자 그대로 여러분에게 뭔가를 전달하고 싶습니다.

which is not what my student  wanted to communicate.

제 학생이 전달하고 싶었던 내용은 그게 아니었습니다.

How about this sentence?

이 문장은 어떻습니까?

Lately I'm worried about my English test.

요즘 영어 시험 때문에 걱정이에요.

What's the mistake?

무슨 실수야?

The mistake is using the wrong verb tense with  lately or recently, and I hear this mistake a lot.

실수는 lately나 최근에 잘못된 동사 시제를 사용하는 것인데 , 이런 실수를 많이 듣습니다.

Lately or recently means the action started in the  

최근 또는 최근은 작업이 과거에 시작되어

past and it continues until now and  it might continue into the future.

지금까지 계속되고 미래에도 계속될 수 있음을 의미합니다.

So what verb tense do we need?

그렇다면 어떤 동사 시제가 필요합니까?

The present perfect continuous?

현재완료 진행형?

Lately I've been worrying about my English test,  

요즘 저는 영어 시험에 대해 걱정하고 있습니다.

and you could also say recently I've  been worrying about my English test.

그리고 최근에는 영어 시험에 대해 걱정하고 있다고도 말할 수 있습니다.

Now remember that these are  real mistakes that my real  

이제 이것이

students in the finely fluent Academy have made.

유창한 아카데미의 실제 학생들이 저지른 실제 실수라는 것을 기억하십시오.

The important thing is that  you're correcting them right now.

Our next sentence we need to  stop problem in its tracks.

다음 문장에서는 문제의 진행을 멈춰야 합니다.

What's the mistake?

무슨 실수야?

This student forgot the article.

이 학생은 기사를 잊어버렸습니다.

This is definitely the most common  mistake I hear even with my advanced  

이것은 확실히 고급 학생들에게도 듣는 가장 흔한 실수입니다.

students is leaving out articles or  not using articles correctly overall.

기사를 생략하거나 기사를 전반적으로 올바르게 사용하지 않는 것입니다.

So here problem is a singular countable noun.

그래서 여기서 문제는 단수 셀 수 있는 명사입니다.

So it means an article.

그러니까 기사라는 뜻이군요.

We need to stop the problem in its tracks.

우리는 문제의 궤도를 멈춰야 합니다.

Now you could also say we need to  stop this problem in its tracks.

이제 이 문제를 멈추어야 한다고 말할 수도 있습니다.

You could even say we need to  stop our problem in its tracks.

문제가 발생하는 것을 멈춰야 한다고 말할 수도 있습니다.

But you need some article before  a singular countable noun.

하지만 단수 셀 수 있는 명사 앞에는 관사가 필요합니다. 예외이고 관사를 취하지 않는

Unless it's one of the many nouns that  are exceptions and don't take articles.

많은 명사 중 하나가 아니라면 말이죠 .

Which is why students struggle  with articles so much,  

이것이 학생들이 기사로 인해 그렇게 많은 어려움을 겪는 이유이며,

and which is why I help my students  in the Finely fluent Academy and  

제가 Finely Fluent Academy에서 학생들을 돕고 기사의

provide this support because the use  of articles is so specific in English.

사용이 영어로 매우 구체적이기 때문에 이러한 지원을 제공하는 이유입니다 .

Let's look at this sentence.

이 문장을 살펴보겠습니다.

Whenever a student joins the finely fluent  Academy, they always introduce themselves.

학생은 유창한 아카데미에 들어올 때마다 항상 자신을 소개합니다.

And one of the questions is  what do you do for a living?

그리고 질문 중 하나는 생계를 위해 무엇을 하시나요?입니다.

And a lot of students will reply back  and say I'm accountant, I'm accountant.

그러면 많은 학생들이 답장을 보내 내가 회계사라고 답할 것입니다.

What's the problem here?

여기서 문제가 무엇입니까?

Again, it's articles.

다시말해 기사입니다.

You need an article before a job title.

직책 앞에 기사가 필요합니다.

So you would need to say I'm an accountant.

그러니까 제가 회계사라고 말해야 할 것 같아요.

You need an because accountant starts with a  vowel sound, so you need an instead of awe.

회계사가 모음 소리로 시작하므로 aw가 필요합니다.

I'm an accountant.

나는 회계사입니다.

He's a developer, but if you were talking about  a group, you could say they're developers.

그는 개발자이지만 그룹에 대해 이야기한다면 개발자라고 말할 수 있습니다.

They are developers.

그들은 개발자입니다.

So notice in this case there's no  article because the noun is plural  

따라서 이 경우에는 명사가 복수형이기 때문에 관사가 없으며 복수 명사가 포함된

and you don't need an article with  plural nouns, they're developers.

관사는 필요하지 않습니다 . 그들은 개발자입니다.

So please, when you tell people what you do for  a living, make sure you include the article.

따라서 사람들에게 귀하가 직업을 설명할 때 해당 기사를 포함하시기 바랍니다.

Otherwise it will sound like  your English is very beginner.

그렇지 않으면 귀하의 영어가 매우 초보적인 것처럼 들릴 것입니다.

Let's review this sentence.

이 문장을 검토해 보겠습니다.

He has been jumping up and down  for two hours, was the mistake.

그는 2시간 동안 위아래로 뛰어다녔는데, 실수였습니다.

This student wanted to use the present perfect  continuous but they didn't form it properly.

이 학생은 현재완료 진행형을 사용하고 싶었지만 제대로 쓰지 못했습니다.

So it's the incorrect structure.

그러니 잘못된 구조입니다.

The correct structure is subject  have or has conjugated with the  

올바른 구조는 주어가

subject which this student did and  then been and then the verb in ING.

이 학생이 했던 주어와 그 다음 있었던 주어, 그리고 ING의 동사와 활용되거나 활용된 것입니다.

So the student only made one mistake, but just one  

그래서 그 학생은 단 한 번의 실수만 했을 뿐인데, 문장 구조에 단 한 번의

mistake with the structure of a sentence  will make the entire sentence incorrect.

실수라도 전체 문장이 틀려지게 됩니다.

The student used the verb in ING  being when it should have been been.

학생은 ING에서 있어야 할 동사를 사용했습니다 .

So the correct sentence is He has been  jumping up and down for two hours.

따라서 올바른 문장은 He has been Jump up and down 입니다.

How about this one?

이건 어때?

You need to practice more your English lessons.

영어 수업을 더 많이 연습해야 합니다.

What's the mistake?

무슨 실수야?

The mistake here is incorrect word order,  

여기서 실수는 단어 순서가 잘못된 것입니다.

because you don't practice more  something, you practice something more.

더 많은 것을 연습하지 않기 때문에  더 많은 것을 연습하게 됩니다.

So the correct sentence is you need  to practice your English lessons more.

따라서 올바른 문장은 영어 수업을 더 연습해야 한다는 것입니다.

You practice something, your English lessons more.

뭔가를 연습하고, 영어 수업을 더 많이 연습하세요.

Now if the something is obvious,  you're talking about English lessons.

이제 뭔가 분명하다면 영어 수업에 대해 이야기하고 있는 것입니다.

You don't need to specify that.

그것을 지정할 필요는 없습니다.

You could simply say you need to practice more,  

단순히 더 연습해야 한다고 말할 수도 있으므로,

so you can also use practice more  but without including the something.

연습을 더 많이 사용할 수도 있지만, 뭔가를 포함하지 않아도 됩니다.

This is the final mistake and it's the one that I  hear the absolute most, even more than articles.

이것이 마지막 실수이며 제가 기사보다 훨씬 더 많이 듣는 말입니다.

This sentence is the project doesn't go well.

이 문장은 프로젝트가 잘 진행되지 않는다는 것입니다.

What's the mistake?

무슨 실수야?

So what verb tense is being used here?

그렇다면 여기서는 어떤 동사 시제가 사용되고 있나요?

This sentence uses the present simple, but  the present simple is for routine actions,  

이 문장은 현재진행형을 사용하고 있지만, 현재진행형은 일상적인 행위를 뜻하며,

and in this case it's not a routine action,  it's an action that's taking place right now.

이 경우에는 일상적인 행위가 아니고, 현재 일어나고 있는 행위를 의미합니다.

So the mistake is using the present simple when  the present continuous should have been used.

따라서 현재 진행형을 사용해야 하는데 단순 현재형을 사용하는 것이 실수입니다 .

And this is by far the most  common mistake that I hear.

그리고 이것은 제가 듣는 가장 흔한 실수입니다.

Advanced students make the present simple.

고급 학생들은 현재를 단순하게 만듭니다.

The correct sentence is the  project isn't going well.

올바른 문장은 프로젝트가 잘 진행되고 있지 않다는 것입니다.

Isn't going.

가지 않습니다.

Is going, but in the negative.

가고 있지만 부정적입니다.

So we have our present  continuous is going is not going.

따라서 현재 진행형은 진행형이 아닙니다. 지금 얘기하고 있기

The project isn't going well because  we're talking about right now.

때문에 프로젝트가 잘 진행되지 않고 있습니다 .

Right now, the project isn't going well.

지금은 프로젝트가 잘 진행되고 있지 않습니다.

You could absolutely use the present  simple, but you would have to make  

현재를 단순하게 사용할 수도 있지만

the context appropriate so it would  need to be more of a routine action.

문맥을 적절하게 만들어 좀 더 일상적인 행동이 되도록 해야 합니다.

Think of it as more of an in general.

일반적으로 더 많이 생각하십시오.

So you could say our projects don't go well.

그러니까 우리 프로젝트가 잘 안 된다고 할 수도 있겠네요.

So it's not necessarily the  project right now, it's in general.

따라서 지금은 반드시 프로젝트일 필요는 없으며 일반적입니다.

In general, our projects don't go well, so  just remember right now, present continuous.

일반적으로 우리 프로젝트가 잘 진행되지 않으니 지금 당장은 현재진행형이라는 것만 기억하세요.

In general, present simple.

일반적으로 현재는 단순합니다.

So were you making a lot of these mistakes?

that my real students make and don't  feel bad if you make them as well.

The whole purpose of being here is to  make mistakes, learn, improve and grow.

여기에 있는 목적은 실수를 저지르고, 배우고, 개선하고, 성장하는 것입니다.
