Our story today is called  Bobby Misadventures at Work.

오늘의 이야기는 바비의 직장에서의 모험이라고 합니다.

Do you know what a misadventure is?

재난이 뭔지 아세요?

A misadventure means bad luck or  an experience with a bad result.

불운은 불운이나 나쁜 결과를 가져온 경험을 의미합니다.

For example, you could say our vacation  quickly turned into a misadventure.

예를 들어, 우리의 휴가는 금세 불행한 모험으로 바뀌었다고 말할 수 있습니다.

Now let's start our story and learn  about Bob's misadventures at work.

이제 이야기를 시작하여 밥이 직장에서 겪는 불행한 사건에 대해 알아보겠습니다.

Bob was thrilled when he landed a job at Tech  Solutions, but his first day was a disaster.

밥은 Tech Solutions에서 일자리를 얻었을 때 매우 기뻤지만 , 첫날은 재앙이었습니다.

He spilled coffee on his boss's desk and her  stern look made him realize he was in trouble.

그는 상사의 책상에 커피를 쏟았고 그녀의 엄숙한 표정을 보고 그는 곤경에 처했다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

So we already know that Bob has some bad luck.

그래서 우리는 밥이 불운하다는 것을 이미 알고 있습니다.

This is a misadventure.

이것은 불행한 일입니다.

Now notice here landed Bob landed this means to  

이제 여기서 landed Bob landed가

get in the past of course got so  you can think of it as received.

과거에 get을 의미했다는 것을 알아두세요. 그래서 received로 생각할 수 있습니다.

We commonly use this with jobs.

우리는 일반적으로 직업에 대해 이것을 사용합니다.

I landed the job I'm thrilled.

제가 그 일자리를 얻게 되어서 너무 기뻐요.

So notice Bob was thrilled to be thrilled.

그러니까 밥이 매우 기뻐했다는 것을 주목하세요.

And then you conjugate your verb and if you're  thrilled, this means you're extremely happy.

그리고 동사를 활용해서 ' scented'를 쓰면 매우 기쁘다는 뜻이에요.

Other alternatives You could say Bob was  very happy sounds less than thrilled.

다른 대안으로는 밥이 매우 행복했다고 말할 수도 있지만, 그다지 기쁘다는 말은 아닙니다.

Or you could say ecstatic, which sounds  about the same or even more over the moon.

아니면 황홀하다는 표현도 쓸 수 있는데, 비슷하거나 오히려 더 황홀하다는 뜻입니다.

That's a fun idiom that means very happy.

매우 행복하다는 뜻의 재밌는 관용어입니다.

On cloud 9.

기분이 9번째에요.

You could say Bob was beyond happy.

밥이 너무 행복했다고 할 수 있죠.

Or you could say Bob was jumping for joy.

혹은 밥이 기쁨에 뛰어올랐다고 말할 수도 있다.

Now let's look at this sentence structure.

이제 이 문장 구조를 살펴보겠습니다.

Bob was thrilled when he landed a JOMP.

밥은 JOMP를 성공시켰을 때 매우 기뻤습니다.

The model here is I or someone was our verb  to be in the past and then any adjective.

여기서 모델은 '과거에 존재했던 나' 또는 '누군가'가 동사 이고 그 뒤에는 형용사가 오는 것입니다.

I was thrilled when and then  you need a past simple clause.

과거 단순절이 필요할 때는 정말 기뻤습니다.

A clause is a subject, a verb, and an object.

절은 주어, 동사, 목적어로 구성됩니다.

For example, I was thrilled  or I was ecstatic over the  

예를 들어,

moon when my student told me he passed the IELTS.

제 학생이 IELTS에 합격했다고 말했을 때 저는 정말 기뻤고 너무 기뻤습니다.

Or you could say I was thrilled when  Jennifer responded to my comment.

혹은 제니퍼가 내 댓글에 답변했을 때 나는 매우 기뻤다고 말할 수도 있다.

Let's continue on and notice this important word.

But but this is used as a contrasting point  

하지만, 하지만 이것은 대조적인 점으로 사용되는데,

because we have thrilled,  which is extremely happy.

왜냐하면 우리는 매우 기쁘다는 뜻의 'sweet'을 가지고 있기 때문입니다 .

But then we have disaster, which is  negative so but helps you transition.

하지만 재난이 닥치면 부정적이기는 하지만 전환에 도움이 됩니다.

Now let's look at to be a disaster.

이제 재앙이 일어나는 상황을 살펴보겠습니다.

Notice that verb to be and then a disaster.

동사 to be와 disaster가 함께 쓰인 점에 주목하세요.

We use this to say to go very wrong,  resulting in problems or failures.

이 표현은 매우 잘못된 일, 즉 문제나 실패로 이어지는 일을 말합니다.

You can say it was it being the situation.

상황이 그랬다고 할 수 있겠죠.

It my first day at work, it was a disaster.

제가 직장에 처음 출근한 날은 재앙이었습니다.

You could sound even stronger and say  catastrophe, repeat after me, catastrophe.

더 강한 표현을 사용하여 재앙이라고 말할 수도 있습니다 . 내 말을 따라 재앙이라고 말할 수도 있습니다. 혹은

Or you could say it was a debacle.

대참사가 일어났다고 말할 수도 있겠습니다.

It was a train wreck.

그것은 열차 사고였습니다.

That's a very common one.

매우 흔한 일이죠.

It was a nightmare.

그것은 악몽이었습니다.

All of those are alternatives.

이 모든 것이 대안입니다.

And why was it a disaster for poor Bob?

그리고 왜 그것은 가난한 밥에게 재앙이었을까요?

Because he spilled coffee on his boss's desk.

그는 상사의 책상에 커피를 쏟았기 때문입니다.

Here, spilled is a verb.

여기서 spilled는 동사입니다.

I accidentally spilled my coffee.

실수로 커피를 쏟았어요.

Now you can also use it as a noun.

이제 명사로도 사용할 수 있습니다.

Here's a rag to clean up your spill.

얼룩을 닦을 수 있는 걸레입니다.

So this functions as a noun.

그래서 이것은 명사로 기능합니다.

You can also use it as an adjective.

형용사로도 사용할 수 있습니다.

Here's a rag to clean up your spilled coffee.

쏟은 커피를 닦을 수 있는 걸레입니다.

So spilled modifies coffee.

그래서 엎지른 것은 커피를 변화시킨다.

It's an adjective.

그것은 형용사예요.

And notice Stern, his boss's stern look.

그리고 그의 상사인 스턴의 엄격한 표정을 주목하세요.

Stern.

슈테른.

This means serious, strict, or firm.

이는 진지하고 엄격하며 확고하다는 뜻입니다.

So you could say my boss is stern or  my boss always has a stern expression.

그러니까 제 상사는 엄격하시다, 혹은 제 상사는 항상 엄격한 표정을 짓고 계시다고 할 수 있겠습니다.

So you can use it to describe  someone's expression, or you can  

따라서 누군가의 표정을 묘사하는 데 사용할 수도 있고 ,

describe the person and notice our  pronoun and possessive agreement.

그 사람을 묘사하면서 대명사와 소유격의 일치에 주목할 수도 있습니다.

He spilled his coffee.

그는 커피를 쏟았습니다.

The coffee belongs to Bob on his boss's desk.

커피는 사장님의 책상 위에 있는 밥의 것입니다.

The desk belongs to the boss  but who does the boss belong to?

책상은 사장님의 것이지만 사장님은 누구의 것일까요?

Bob.

밥.

That's why it's his boss's desk.

그러니까 그 자리가 그의 상사의 책상인 거예요.

You could say he spilled his coffee on her desk  

그가 그녀의 책상에 커피를 쏟았다고 할 수 있는데,

because the desk belongs to  the boss, which is female.

그 책상은 여성인 사장님의 책상이기 때문입니다.

Her desk.

그녀의 책상.

Let's continue our story.

이야기를 계속해 보겠습니다. 밥은

Determined to make up for it,  

이를 만회하기로 결심하고

Bob works late to finish a report only  to discover it was due two days earlier.

보고서를 마무리하기 위해 늦게까지 일하다가 보고서가 이틀 일찍 제출되어야 한다는 사실을 알게 됩니다.

He felt like he'd really dropped the ball.

그는 자신이 정말로 실수를 했다는 기분이 들었다.

Let's review.

검토해 보겠습니다.

Determined to make up for it.

그것을 만회하기로 결심했습니다.

This is an adverbial phrase.

이것은 부사구입니다.

It modifies the main clause, which  is the main sentence determined.

이는 주절을 수정하는데, 주절은 주요 문장을 결정합니다.

This is a past participle.

이것은 과거 분사입니다.

It describes Bob's state of mind at that time.

그것은 그 당시 밥의 정신 상태를 묘사하고 있습니다.

You could say Bob was determined to make up  for it, so he worked late to finish the report.

밥은 그것을 만회하기로 결심하고 보고서를 끝내기 위해 늦게까지 일했다고 할 수 있다.

You can also say Bob worked  late to finish the report  

밥이 보고서를 완성하기 위해 늦게까지 일한 것은

because he was determined to make up for it.

그가 보고서를 만회하려고 마음먹었기 때문이라고 할 수도 있다.

Now let's review to make up for something.

이제 뭔가를 보완하기 위해 검토해 봅시다.

This is very commonly used because it means  to right or wrong to rectify a mistake.

이는 실수를 바로잡는 것이 옳다 또는 그르다는 것을 의미하기 때문에 매우 일반적으로 사용됩니다.

You could say to your husband,  wife, boyfriend, girlfriend.

남편, 아내, 남자친구, 여자친구에게 이렇게 말할 수 있을 거예요.

I'm so sorry I forgot our anniversary.

기념일을 잊어버려서 정말 미안해요.

I promise I'll make up for it.

꼭 보상해 드리겠습니다.

I'll right this wrong, I'll rectify this mistake.

이 잘못을 바로잡겠습니다. 이 실수를 바로잡겠습니다.

You could also say I'm so  sorry I forgot our anniversary.

기념일을 잊어버려서 정말 미안하다고 말할 수도 있어요.

I promise I'll make it up to you.

꼭 보상해 드리겠습니다.

Notice the slight variation here?

여기서 약간의 차이를 알아차리셨나요?

It's to make something up to someone.

누군가에게 무언가를 만들어내는 거예요.

Same meaning to rectify a  mistake, to right a wrong.

실수를 바로잡는 것 , 잘못을 바로잡는 것과 같은 의미입니다.

Now let's look at to drop the ball.

이제 공을 떨어뜨리는 것에 대해 살펴보겠습니다.

This is a very common idiom.

이것은 매우 흔한 관용어입니다.

It means to make a mistake, but  because you failed to take action.

실수를 한다는 뜻이지만, 조치를 취하지 않았기 때문에 실수를 한다는 뜻입니다.

For example, I asked you to book  the reservation a month ago,  

예를 들어, 한 달 전에 예약을 요청했는데,

and now there's no availability  because you failed to take action.

귀하가 조치를 취하지 않아 지금은 예약 가능한 객실이 없습니다.

So you can say I know I dropped the ball.

그러니까 제가 실수를 했다는 걸 안다고 말할 수 있죠.

You're admitting that you failed to take action.

당신은 조치를 취하지 못했다는 것을 인정하고 있습니다.

I know I dropped the ball.

제가 실수를 했다는 걸 알아요.

I'm so sorry.

정말 미안해요.

I promise I'll make it up to you.

꼭 보상해 드리겠습니다.

I'll write this wrong.

제가 이걸 잘못 썼을 수도 있어요.

Let's continue the story.

이야기를 계속해 보겠습니다.

Still, he didn't throw in the towel.

그래도 그는 포기하지 않았습니다.

He volunteered to give a presentation,  but on the day of the presentation,  

그는 프레젠테이션을 하겠다고 자원했지만 프레젠테이션 당일에

he accidentally broke the projector and  didn't have a hard copy of the presentation.

실수로 프로젝터를 부수었고 프레젠테이션 자료의 인쇄본이 없었습니다.

Notice another idiom to throw in the towel.

항복을 선언하는 또 다른 관용 표현에 주목하세요.

Do you know what that means?

그게 무슨 뜻인지 아시나요?

If you throw in the towel, it means you give up.

수건을 던진다는 것은 포기한다는 뜻입니다.

You accept defeat.

당신은 패배를 받아들인다.

Learning English can be difficult at times,  but I'm not going to throw in the towel, right?

영어를 배우는 건 가끔 어려울 수 있지만, 포기할 생각은 없잖아요, 그렇죠?

Right, You can say I'm going to stick with it.

그렇죠. 계속하겠다고 말할 수 있겠죠. 영어 학습이라는

If you stick with something  that it being learning English,  

것을 계속한다면 ,

it means you continue doing something  difficult and that describes you, right?

그것은 어려운 일을 계속한다는 것을 의미하고 , 그것이 당신을 잘 표현한다고 생각하지 않나요?

You're going to stick with it.

당신은 그것을 고수할 것입니다.

You're not going to throw in the towel.

당신은 포기하지 않을 거예요.

Let's look at He volunteered  to give a presentation.

그가 프레젠테이션을 하겠다고 자원한 것을 살펴보자 .

Of course you can say I'm a volunteer.

물론 저는 자원봉사자라고 말할 수 있죠.

This is a noun form.

이것은 명사 형태입니다.

I'm a volunteer.

저는 자원봉사자입니다.

You can say every Saturday I volunteer.

매주 토요일마다 자원봉사를 한다고 말할 수 있죠.

That's the verb.

그게 동사예요.

I volunteer at a local animal shelter.

저는 지역 동물 보호소에서 자원봉사를 합니다.

Now let's say in the workplace, like  in Bob's situation, your boss says who  

이제 직장에서 밥의 상황처럼, 상사가 공항

has time to pick up the client from  the airport and you say I can do it.

에서 고객을 픽업할 시간이 있는 사람이 누구인지 묻고 , 당신은 내가 그 일을 할 수 있다고 말한다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

In this case, you volunteered to do it.

이 경우에는 당신이 자원해서 그렇게 한 것입니다.

So volunteered is a verb in the past,  simple, you volunteered to do it.

따라서 volunteered는 과거형 동사로, 간단하게 말하면 당신이 그 일을 하기로 자원했다는 뜻입니다.

So if you volunteer in the workplace, it means  you complete extra duties without compensation.

따라서 직장에서 자원봉사를 한다면 보상 없이 추가 업무를 수행한다는 의미입니다.

Let's keep going with our  story, hoping for a fresh start.

새로운 시작을 바라며 우리의 이야기를 계속해 나가자.

Bob brought Donuts to the office, but  after getting stuck in, he arrived late.

밥은 사무실에 도넛을 가져왔지만, 일이 너무 바빠서 늦게 도착했습니다.

As he passed them out, he  tripped and spilled coffee again.

그는 커피를 나눠주다가 넘어져 다시 커피를 쏟았습니다.

His boss, half amused, said maybe this is a  sign you should give up your coffee habit.

그의 상사는 반쯤 즐거워하면서 이게 아마 커피 습관을 포기해야 할 신호일지도 모른다고 말했습니다.

Let's review, hoping for a fresh start.

새로운 시작을 바라며 검토해 봅시다.

This is a participle phrase.

이것은 분사구입니다.

It explains why Bob did the action.

이는 밥이 왜 그런 행동을 했는지를 설명합니다.

Now a fresh start.

이제 새로운 시작입니다.

This is an opportunity to begin again.

이것은 다시 시작할 수 있는 기회입니다.

We commonly refer to events such  as New Year's birthdays, new jobs,  

우리는 일반적으로 새해, 새 직장,

new relationships, even new  locations as a fresh start.

새 관계, 심지어 새 지역과 같은 사건을 새로운 시작이라고 부릅니다.

It's an opportunity for you to begin again.

다시 시작할 수 있는 기회예요.

Let's look at.

But after getting stuck in  traffic, he arrived late.

살펴보죠.

하지만 교통 체증에 갇히면서 늦게 도착했습니다.

So when Bob got to work, he  could say, sorry, I'm late.

그래서 밥이 일에 도착했을 때, 그는 " 미안해요, 늦었어요"라고 말할 수 있었습니다.

I was stuck in traffic.

교통 체증에 갇혔어요.

So notice here it's to be the verb  to be, to be stuck in traffic.

여기서 주의할 점은 동사 to be, 즉 교통 체증에 갇혔다는 것입니다.

The verb to be describes your current state.

동사 to be는 현재 상태를 설명합니다.

I was at that time stuck in traffic.

그 당시 저는 교통 체증에 갇혀 있었습니다.

Now you could also say I hope  we don't get stuck in traffic.

이제 교통 체증에 갇히지 않았으면 좋겠다고 말할 수도 있을 겁니다 .

O using the verb get to get stuck in traffic.

교통 체증에 갇히다.

This is the transition from not stuck to stuck.

이는 멈춘 상태에서 멈춘 상태로의 전환입니다.

Now let's look at as he passed  them out to pass Oregon.

이제 그가 오리건을 통과할 때의 모습을 살펴보겠습니다 .

To hand something out means  to distribute to a group.

무언가를 나눠준다는 것은 집단에 나눠주는 것을 의미합니다.

Of course the teacher passed  out the practice exercises,  

물론 선생님이 연습문제를 나눠주셨

but you can use this in other situations.

지만, 다른 상황에서도 활용할 수 있습니다.

The store handed out coupons,  distributed coupons to the customers.

매장에서는 쿠폰을 나눠주고, 고객들에게 쿠폰을 나눠주었습니다.

As he passed them out, he  tripped and spilled coffee again.

그는 커피를 나눠주다가 넘어져 다시 커피를 쏟았습니다.

Poor Bob.

불쌍한 밥.

So trip.

This is when you catch your foot on an object.

그래서 여행.

이는 발이 물체에 걸리는 경우입니다.

Compare that to slip.

이것을 미끄러짐과 비교해 보세요.

When you slip, you slide on a slippery surface.

미끄러지면 미끄러운 표면에서 미끄러지게 됩니다.

You could say I tripped on the  rock, but I regained my balance.

바위에 걸려 넘어졌다고 할 수도 있겠지만, 나는 다시 균형을 찾았습니다.

So if you regained your balance,  it sounds like you didn't fall.

그러니까 균형을 되찾았다면 넘어지지 않은 것 같은데요.

Let's look at his boss.

그의 상사를 살펴보자.

Half amused, half amused.

반은 즐겁고, 반은 즐겁다.

This describes a mixed reaction.

이는 엇갈린 반응을 설명합니다.

O partially amused, which is another way  of saying entertained but not entirely so.

아, 약간 즐겁다. 이는 즐겁지만 전적으로 즐겁지는 않다는 것을 나타내는 또 다른 표현이다. 또 다른 커피를 쏟았을

Also partially the opposite emotion which could  

be annoyed or upset because  he spilled another coffee.

때 짜증이 나거나 화가 난다는 반대 감정도 있을 수 있습니다 .

So the boss could say if you  spill another coffee you're fired.

그래서 사장은 당신이 또 커피를 쏟으면 해고한다고 말할 수 있었어요.

Oh, you're fired and I'm only half joking.

아, 당신은 해고당했어요. 농담 반 진담 반이에요.

We use this a lot to say I'm half joking.

우리는 제가 반쯤 농담이라고 말할 때 이 표현을 많이 사용합니다.

This means I'm partially  serious, but partially joking.

즉, 절반은 진지하지만 절반은 농담이라는 뜻입니다.

I'm half joking.

반은 농담이에요.

So now that you understand all the vocabulary,  let's read the story from start to finish.

그럼 이제 모든 어휘를 이해했으니, 이야기를 처음부터 끝까지 읽어볼까요?

Bob's misadventures at work.

밥이 직장에서 겪은 불행한 사건.

Bob was thrilled when he landed a job at Tech  Solutions, but his first day was a disaster.

밥은 Tech Solutions에서 일자리를 얻었을 때 매우 기뻤지만 , 첫날은 재앙이었습니다.

He spilled coffee on his boss's desk, and her  stern look made him realize he was in trouble.

그는 상사의 책상에 커피를 쏟았고, 그녀의 엄숙한 표정을 보고 그는 곤경에 처했다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

Determined to make up for it, Bob  worked late to finish a report,

His boss, half amused, said, maybe this is  a sign you should give U your coffee habit.

그의 상사는 반쯤 즐거워하면서, 이게 아마 너에게 커피 습관을 버려야 할 신호일지도 모른다고 말했다. 스토리를 통해 영어를 배우는
