Asking a question, a simple question,  is a great way to start a conversation.

I use this all the time when  I'm talking to my husband,

I have to ask him to explain things to me in  a simple way because my level of knowledge

Now instead of saying I don't understand, you  can add one word I don't quite understand.

I don't quite understand #5 when you're  talking to natives, you should not say,

North America is tolerant  of different life choices  

북미는 다양한 삶의 선택에 관대하며

and asking someone about this is just considered  too personal for North American culture.

, 누군가에게 이에 대해 묻는 것은 북미 문화에 비해 너무 개인적인 것으로 간주됩니다.

And for our culture, it sounds judgmental.

그리고 우리 문화에서는 비판적인 것처럼 들립니다.

Since we accept people of all different  beliefs and all different lifestyles.

우리는 다양한 신앙과 생활 방식을 가진 사람들을 받아들이기 때문입니다.

It sounds judgmental to say why don't you, but  you can ask someone directly do you have kids?

왜 안 되는지 말하는 것이 비판적으로 들리겠지만, 다른 사람에게 자녀가 있는지 직접 물어볼 수 있습니다.

Generally, parents are proud  

일반적으로 부모는

to talk about their kids and it isn't  considered offensive to ask that.

자녀에 관해 이야기하는 것을 자랑스러워하며 그런 질문을 하는 것은 모욕적인 것으로 간주되지 않습니다.

You can directly ask someone do you have kids?

누군가에게 아이가 있나요?를 직접 물어볼 수 있습니다.

How many kids do you have?

자녀가 몇 명 있습니까?

Just keep in mind that this question  is considered inappropriate in a job  

interview because in interviews people  are protected against discrimination.

면접에서는 사람들이 차별로부터 보호되기 때문에 이 질문은 취업 면접에서는 부적절한 것으로 간주된다는 점을 명심하세요.

So this question will not  be asked in a job interview,  

따라서 취업 면접에서는 이 질문을 하지 않지만,

but you can directly ask a native  speaker in a social situation.

사회적 상황에서는 원어민에게 직접 물어볼 수 있습니다.

Do you have kids?

아이가 있나요?

Now again, if you are very curious,  why does that person not have kids?

이제 다시 매우 궁금하시다면 그 사람은 왜 아이가 없나요?

Well, maybe you just want to  know more about their life

and how they spend their time so you can ask them.

What hobbies or interests do  you enjoy in your free time?

What goals or causes are important to you?

These are questions that would be interesting  for a native speaker to discuss, and you'll

get to know about them at the same time in an  indirect, clever way #11 you should do this.

Should and shouldn't are direct, and in general  people don't like being told what to do.

However, of course there are many situations  where using should and shouldn't is appropriate.

But if you want to sound more  indirect, use softer language.

You can say, have you considered  you need the gerund Next,

have you considered talking to your boss?

상사와 이야기해 보시는 것을 고려해 보셨나요?

Perhaps you could.

아마도 그럴 수도 있을 것입니다.

Perhaps you could talk to your boss.

Those sound like gentle suggestions  where you should sounds very direct.

Now, you could also say, what do you  think about talking to your boss?

And then you're getting that  person to share their opinion.

And ultimately, they make the decision,  not you, because you say you should.

그리고 궁극적으로 결정을 내리는 것은 당신이 아니라 그들이 하는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 당신이 해야 한다고 말했기 때문입니다.

But remember, there are many situations  where you would, you should or shouldn't.

And finally #12 I don't like that.

Again, this can be awkward or rude  when used as a reply to something

So let's say you're at a party  and you're talking to someone

Well, that might make the person  feel like you don't appreciate

their interests and they might  not want to talk to you anymore.

So you can say, for example, that's  great that you love mountain climbing.

예를 들어, 등산을 좋아하시니 정말 대단하다고 말씀하실 수 있습니다.

I prefer reading.

나는 독서를 선호합니다.

I prefer reading instead of physical activities.

나는 신체활동보다 독서를 더 좋아한다.

So you're complimenting them,  but then stating your preference  

그래서 당신은 그들을 칭찬하지만, 등산을 좋아하지 않는다고 특별히 말하지 않고 당신의 선호도를 말하는 것입니다

without specifically saying you  don't like mountain climbing.

Or you can say that's great  that you love mountain climbing.

Do you have any upcoming trips planned?

So again, you're not sharing  your personal preference at all.

다시 한번 말씀드리지만 귀하는 개인적인 선호도를 전혀 공유하지 않습니다.

You're keeping the focus on that person or  let's say is something that someone offers you.

당신은 그 사람에게 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 또는 누군가가 당신에게 제안하는 것이 있다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

So you're at a party and someone  offers you a piece of chocolate cake.

파티에 참석했는데 누군가가 초콜릿 케이크 한 조각을 제안했습니다.

Now you could say no thanks,  I don't like chocolate.

이제 안 된다고 말씀하셔도 됩니다. 저는 초콜릿을 좋아하지 않습니다.

But again, this is very direct and you've probably

noticed that we prefer a more indirect  approach in general social situations.

So you might say that's so kind of you to offer.

So to offer me a piece of cake,  that's so kind of you to offer.

I'll pass though.

Now you can leave it at that.

I'll pass.

You could provide the reason and just  say I'll pass though I'm not hungry.

이유를 설명하고 배는 고프지 않지만 통과하겠다고 말하면 됩니다.

So again, just avoid directly saying I don't like  

그러니 다시 한 번 말씀드리지만,

this because the person may feel a  little awkward in that situation.

그 상황에서 상대방이 조금 어색함을 느낄 수 있으니 싫다고 직접적으로 말하지 마세요.

So you've removed some phrases that are specific  

따라서 북미 문화 및 언어 사용과 관련된 일부 문구를 삭제했지만

to North American culture and use of  language, but you've added many more.
