Have you ever wondered when or if you should  replace a regular verb with a phrasal verb?

First, let's talk about the reasons why yes,  phrasal verbs are better than regular verbs.

You might be wondering, well,  Jennifer, what is a phrasal verb?

A phrasal verb is a verb  plus a preposition or adverb.

Pick up can also mean buy from a store.

Here's a question that native  speakers are faced with every day.

Reason #3 Phrasal verbs sound casual and friendly.

Phrasal verbs are more casual than regular verbs,

and in many situations in your daily life,  you want to use casual and friendly language.

You can use a common phrasal verb  and say I'll look into that soon.

Look into means, investigate and soon  means at my earliest convenience.

Reason #4 The phrasal verb is the  only option a native would use.

In my examples before, both the phrasal  verb and the regular verb exist,

but the phrasal verb was preferred  because it sounds friendly and casual.

There are some situations where, even  in a professional or formal environment,

Where should I get off the train?

A native speaker would never say that  even in the most formal situation.

Another example, can you turn on the lights?

Turn on, of course, means activate  or what time do you wake up?

In all of these situations, a native  speaker would use the phrasal verb.

Sometimes the answer is no, they're  not better than regular verbs.

Reason #1 Grammatically, phrasal  verbs are more complex and confusing.

There are four types of phrasal verbs, separable,  inseparable, transitive, and intransitive.

Although phrasal verbs sound more natural to  native speakers, they don't sound natural.

If your grammar is incorrect, it's better to use

regular verbs correctly then  incorrectly use phrasal verbs.

It sounds more natural to have a  regular verb that's grammatically

Reason #2 Regular verbs sound more formal.

You don't want to sound casual in spoken English.

So let's say that you want to tell your  boss that you posted the presentation

and you remember learning  the phrasal verb for posted,

but you used the wrong preposition  and say I put off the presentation.

Your boss may become angry because she thinks you

delayed the presentation instead  of making it publicly available.
