Maybe you've heard some teachers say  you should only use phrasal verbs.

First, let's talk about the reasons why yes,  phrasal verbs are better than regular verbs.

You might be wondering, well,  Jennifer, what is a phrasal verb?

A phrasal verb is a verb  plus a preposition or adverb.

구동사는 동사에 전치사 또는 부사를 더한 것입니다.

The phrasal verb has a different  meaning from the main verb.

구동사는 주동사와 의미가 다릅니다.

For example, pick a pen.

예를 들어, 펜을 선택하세요.

This means select a pen.

펜을 선택하라는 의미입니다.

But if I say pick up a pen here,  pick up means lift from a surface.

하지만 여기서 펜을 집으라 하면, 집다(pick up)는 표면에서 들어올리는 것을 의미합니다.

I picked up your pen for you.

나는 당신을 위해 펜을 집어 들었습니다.

Pick up can also mean buy from a store.

픽업(Pick up)은 매장에서 구매한다는 의미이기도 합니다.

I need to pick up some new pens after work.

퇴근 후에 새 펜을 사야 해요.

Pick up can also mean get, retrieve or collect.

Pick up은 가져오다, 회수하다, 수집하다라는 의미도 있습니다.

It's very important to remember that phrasal verbs  have different meanings depending on context.

구동사는 문맥에 따라 의미가 다르다는 점을 기억하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

Now that you know what phrasal verbs are, let's  talk about why they are better than regular verbs.

이제 구동사가 무엇인지 알았으니, 구동사가 일반 동사보다 나은 이유에 대해 이야기해 보겠습니다.

Reason #1 Native speakers  love using phrasal verbs.

이유 #1 원어민은 구동사 사용을 좋아합니다.

If you ask a native speaker what  he did last night, he'll say, Huh?

I hung out at home.

나는 집에서 놀았다.

I checked out a movie.

I picked up some food.

나는 음식을 좀 샀다.

So if you want to understand native speakers in  the real world, you need to learn phrasal verbs.

Reason #2 Phrasal verbs sound natural.

Here's a question that native  speakers are faced with every day.

Are you picking up the kids after school or am I?

This is the natural way to communicate this idea.

A native speaker would not say Are you  collecting the kids after school or am I?

This sounds unnatural and it will make  you sound unnatural if you use it.

Reason #3 Phrasal verbs sound casual and friendly.

이유 #3 구동사는 캐주얼하고 친근하게 들립니다.

Phrasal verbs are more casual than regular verbs,  

구동사는 일반 동사보다 캐주얼하며,

and in many situations in your daily life,  you want to use casual and friendly language.

일상생활의 많은 상황에서 캐주얼하고 친근한 언어를 사용하고 싶습니다.

In most social situations and  in many professional situations,  

대부분의 사회적 상황과 많은 직업적 상황에서

it sounds awkward to use  overly formal word choices.

지나치게 격식을 갖춘 단어 선택을 사용하는 것은 어색하게 들립니다.

It's not the right tone for the situation.

상황에 맞는 톤이 아니네요.

Let's say you're at a party  and your friend says to you,  

당신이 파티에 있고 친구가 당신에게 '

I saw this awesome movie last weekend, you  should check it out, I know you'll love it.

지난 주말에 이 멋진 영화를 봤어요. 꼭 보세요. 당신이 좋아할 거라는 걸 알아요'라고 말한다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

And you reply back and say, I'll  investigate that at my earliest convenience.

그러면 최대한 빠른 시일 내에 조사해 보겠습니다.라고 답장해 주시면 됩니다.

This may sound appropriate in a formal academic or  

공식적인 학술적 또는 비즈니스 상황에서는 적절하게 들릴 수 있지만

business situation, but at  a party it sounds awkward.

파티에서는 어색하게 들립니다.

And because the person talking  to you used casual language,  

그리고 대화하는 사람이 일상적인 언어를 사용했기 때문에

it sounds awkward to reply using formal language.

격식을 갖춘 언어로 대답하는 것이 어색하게 들립니다.

In this specific situation, it's better  to use casual and friendly language.

이런 특정한 상황에서는 캐주얼하고 친근한 언어를 사용하는 것이 더 좋습니다.

You can use a common phrasal verb  and say I'll look into that soon.

일반적인 구동사를 사용 하고 곧 알아보겠다고 말씀하시면 됩니다.

Look into means, investigate and soon  means at my earliest convenience.

살펴보고, 조사하고, 곧 가능한 한 빨리 의미합니다.

Reason #4 The phrasal verb is the  only option a native would use.

이유 #4 구동사는 원어민이 사용하는 유일한 옵션입니다.

In my examples before, both the phrasal  verb and the regular verb exist,  

이전 예에서는 구동사와 일반동사가 모두 존재하지만,

but the phrasal verb was preferred  because it sounds friendly and casual.

친근하고 캐주얼하게 들리기 때문에 구동사를 선호했습니다.

There are some situations where, even  in a professional or formal environment,

the phrasal verb is the only  choice a native would use.

Let's review these examples.

Where should I get off the train?

기차는 어디서 내려야 하나요?

Get off means disembark from a vehicle,  

하차란 차량에서 내리는 것을 의미

but it isn't natural to say where  should I disembark from the train?

하지만, 기차에서 어디서 내려야 하는지 말하는 것은 자연스럽지 않습니까 ?

A native speaker would never say that  even in the most formal situation.

원어민은 가장 공식적인 상황에서도 절대 그런 말을 하지 않습니다 .

Another example, can you turn on the lights?

또 다른 예로, 불을 켜 주시겠어요?

Turn on, of course, means activate  or what time do you wake up?

켜는 것은 활성화한다는 뜻입니다. 아니면 몇 시에 일어나나요?

Wake up means awaken for the  first time in the morning.

Wake up은 아침에 처음으로 깨어난다는 뜻입니다 .

In all of these situations, a native  speaker would use the phrasal verb.

이러한 모든 상황에서 원어민은 구동사를 사용합니다.

Remember our original question was Are  phrasal verbs better than regular verbs?

원래 질문이 ' 구동사가 일반 동사보다 더 나은가요?'였던 것을 기억하세요.

Sometimes the answer is no, they're  not better than regular verbs.

Reason #1 Grammatically, phrasal  verbs are more complex and confusing.

There are four types of phrasal verbs, separable,  inseparable, transitive, and intransitive.

구동사에는 분리형, 분리형, 타동사, 자동사의 네 가지 유형이 있습니다 .

The type of phrasal verb  determines the sentence structure.

구동사의 유형에 따라 문장 구조가 결정됩니다.

You can say I looked the information up.

내가 정보를 찾아봤다고 할 수 있죠.

I looked up the information, I looked it up.

You can say I look after  my kids, I look after them.

내가 내 아이들을 돌보고 있다고 말할 수 있습니다.

You can't say I looked it up, I look  my kids after, I looked them after.

내가 찾아봤고, 내 아이들을 돌보고 돌봤다고 말할 수는 없습니다.

Although phrasal verbs sound more natural to  native speakers, they don't sound natural.

구동사는 원어민에게 더 자연스럽게 들리지만 자연스럽지는 않습니다.

If your grammar is incorrect, it's better to use  

문법이 잘못된 경우

regular verbs correctly then  incorrectly use phrasal verbs.

일반 동사를 올바르게 사용하고 구동사를 잘못 사용하는 것이 좋습니다. 문법적으로 정확하지 않은 구동사

It sounds more natural to have a  regular verb that's grammatically  

correct than to have a phrasal verb  that isn't grammatically correct.

를 갖는 것보다 문법적으로 올바른 일반 동사를 갖는 것이 더 자연스럽게 들립니다 . 문법이 정확하다고

If you are not 100% confident that your  grammar is correct, regular verbs are better.

100% 확신할 수 없다면 일반 동사가 더 좋습니다.

Reason #2 Regular verbs sound more formal.

이유 #2 일반 동사가 더 형식적으로 들립니다.

In some situations.

어떤 상황에서는.

You don't want to sound casual in spoken English.

영어로 말하는 것이 캐주얼하게 들리는 것을 원하지 않습니다.

You may want to sound more formal  when you're attending a job interview,  

취업 면접에 참석하거나,

giving a formal presentation,  or meeting the CEO or president.

공식적인 프레젠테이션을 하거나, CEO나 사장을 만날 때 좀 더 격식 있게 말하는 것이 좋습니다.

And both academic and formal business writing  favor regular verbs over phrasal verbs.

Reason #3 Using the wrong  preposition can change the meaning.

이유 #3 잘못된 전치사를 사용하면 의미가 바뀔 수 있습니다.

Let's review this sentence.

이 문장을 검토해 보겠습니다.

I put off the presentation here.

발표는 여기서 미루겠습니다.

Put off means delay.

연기하다(Pur off)는 지연을 의미합니다.

But let's review this.

하지만 이것을 검토해보자.

I put up the presentation.

프레젠테이션을 올렸어요.

Put up means to post, advertise,  or make publicly available.

게시(Pub up)는 게시, 광고 또는 공개적으로 제공하는 것을 의미합니다.

How about this?

이건 어때요?

I put on the presentation.

프레젠테이션을 틀었습니다.

Put on means to be responsible for organizing.

Put on은 정리하는 일을 담당한다는 뜻입니다.

So let's say that you want to tell your  boss that you posted the presentation  

따라서 귀하가 프레젠테이션을 게시했다고 상사에게 알리고 싶고 게시됨의 구동사를

and you remember learning  the phrasal verb for posted,  

배운 것을 기억

but you used the wrong preposition  and say I put off the presentation.

하지만 잘못된 전치사를 사용하여 프레젠테이션을 연기한다고 말했다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

Your boss may become angry because she thinks you  

당신의 상사는 당신이 프레젠테이션을 공개하는 대신 프레젠테이션을 지연했다고 생각하기 때문에 화를 낼 수도 있습니다

delayed the presentation instead  of making it publicly available.

Or maybe you use a preposition that doesn't exist,

and you say I put over the presentation and  your boss has no idea what you're talking about.

This confusion doesn't exist with regular verbs.

So again, if you are not 100% confident that  you're using the correct phrasal verb with

Although remember, if you want to  understand native speakers in the real
