Today you're going to learn 10 famous movie expressions that you need to know.

And you need to know these expressions because native speakers use them in our daily speech.

This is going to be a fun lesson.

You're going to love it.

Now let's get started.

Our first famous movie expression.

May the force be with you.

What movie is this from?

This is from Star Wars, of course.

May the force be with you?

Native speakers use this expression to say "good luck" or "best wishes".

May the Force be with you always.

And if you're a Star Wars fan, which I am not, you'll know that "the Force" represents

"good luck".

So may "the Force", may "good luck" be with you.

And that's the thing about these movie expressions.

Even if you're not a fan of these movies, native speakers still use them, even if we've

never seen the movie.

May the Force be with you.

So although I'm not a Star Wars fan, I haven't seen all the Star Wars movies, I am still

very familiar with this expression.

I hear it a lot and I have used it myself.

Now this famous movie expression, may the force be with you, is especially used when

you're attempting something difficult or challenging.

So let's choose something difficult for you.

How about your IELTS speaking exam.

And you want to get the highest score.

You could tell your friend: tomorrow I'm taking my IELTS speaking exam.

And to wish you good luck or best wishes, your friend can say:

May the force be with you.

May the Force be with you.

May the Force be with you.

Do you know what movie this is from?

Of course, Terminator.

I'll be back.

Now just know that this expression is very commonly used outside of the movie.

I'll be back is a very, very common thing to say in English, in many different contexts.

It's definitely part of my regular speech.

However, when we imitate the movie expression, we do it in a very dramatic way.

I'll be back.

And as you may know, Arnold Schwarzenegger has a very distinct accent in this movie,

and native speakers love imitating his accent when we use this movie reference.

Whereas if we use the regular: I'll be back, just to say bye, I'll be back, I will return.

Of course we wouldn't imitate the pronunciation.

But to be more dramatic, to make it sound like the movie reference, we often imitate

his pronunciation.

I'll be back.

Now of course this is used with a promise or commitment to return, because it's in the

future simple.

"I will be back" means you will return to your original spot.

We also use this to show resilience or determination after a challenge, and it's very commonly

used as a more humorous goodbye.

So to be dramatic at work, you could say: I'm taking a leave of absence, but don't worry,

I'll be back.

And remember, a little drama in the expression so they know you're quoting the movie.

I'll be back.

And in more of a resilience, determination way,

you might say: I got kicked off the project, but I know my ideas are great.

I'll be back.

So you're very convinced, you're determined, you're showing resilience.

I'll be back.

Number three.

Life is like a box of chocolates.

You never know what you're gonna get.

What movie is this from, do you know?

Well, it's my namesake, Forrest Gump.

No relation to the movie at all.

My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates.

You never know what you're going to get.

Life is a box of chocolates, Forrest.

This is used to show the uncertainty, unpredictability, or the unexpected nature of life.

So if I'm teaching a class, I could say: close your books.

We're having a quiz!

And the students could say: what I'm not prepared.

You know what they say.

Life is like a box of chocolates.

Just know that native speakers commonly only use the first part of this movie expression

because everyone knows the rest.

No, mother.

Life is like a box of chocolates.

And it is possible, although less likely, just to use the last part of the expression.

Box of chocolates.

You never know what you're going to get.

And sometimes native speakers will change the words of expressions, and this expression

specifically, to make a joke.

So listen how they change the words in this clip.

Houston, we have a problem.

Do you know what movie this is from?

Have you heard this expression?

This is from Apollo 13.

Houston, we have a problem.

We have a main bus B undervolt.

This is used to acknowledge that a problem or situation has unexpectedly arisen.

Pam, Death com 10, Houston we have a problem.

Now a great way that native speakers use this one is to lighten the tension when you are

dealing with an unexpected problem, challenge, or situation.

So let's say you're about to give a presentation and your boss, your colleagues, the clients

are right in front of you.

And you're trying to connect your computer to the screen and it won't connect.

So you're feeling quite anxious about this.

Everyone is also feeling a little nervous.

To lighten that tension, you can say, Houston, we have a problem.

Please bear with me while I get this resolved.

Thanks for your patience.

Sorry, technical difficulties.

Houston, we have a problem.

And of course, this is: Houston, we have a problem, because NASA is based in Houston,

Texas.

To infinity and beyond.

You know what this is from, right?

This is from Toy Story.

This is used to inspire someone to push their limits.

To infinity and beyond.

To reach for ambitious goals, and to have determination.

So to not give up.

So you can have an ambitious goal.

And you might say to your friend: I know I can become fluent and I know I can do it faster

than I expect.

To encourage and motivate you, your friend could reply back and say: you've got this.

To infinity and beyond!

To infinity and beyond.

You can use this in a presentation or an inspirational speech you're giving to get everyone excited

because everyone knows this expression.

So you could say: we had an amazing year, and I know next year we can double it.

No, triple it.

To infinity and beyond.

So you're pushing your limits.

You're getting everyone excited for your ambitious goal.

I know you have ambitious goals.

I know you can do so much more than you think you're possible of.

Do you know what this is from?

Well, it's from Terminator.

But this time, Terminator 2.

But it's OK if you just said Terminator.

Hasta La Vista, baby.

Did you know that "hasta la vista" is Spanish?

And it means "see you later", as far as I know.

Please, if you speak Spanish, let me know.

It means "see you later" in Spanish.

Now, interestingly, native speakers will recognize this as an expression from Terminator, but

they may have no idea that it's Spanish.

And because it's Spanish, that H is silent.

So it's "asta".

Hasta La Vista baby.

Native speakers use this to say goodbye in a humorous way.

We're off to Italy for three weeks.

Hasta La Vista, baby!

Hasta La Vista, baby.

Now, native speakers also use this to say goodbye, but when you're happy that someone

is leaving, and that someone is leaving either temporarily or permanently.

I might say this after there is a mosquito in my office and it's driving me crazy.

And then finally, I find that mosquito.

And right before I squish it, I say: hasta La Vista, baby.

Or maybe you're the boss and your employee comes into your office and says: I quit.

And you say: oh, you quit.

You can't quit.

You're fired.

Hasta La Vista, baby.

See if I care.

Hasta La Vista, baby.

Hasta La Vista, baby.

Show me the money.

Do you know what this is from?

This is from Jerry Maguire.

This is used to say we want proof of a financial commitment or success or a tangible result.

So maybe your friend says to you: I got the highest mark on my IELTS.

And you can reply back and say: Oh really?

Show me the money.

So you're saying: show me the proof.

I want to see that record.

Show me the money.

Or maybe you're in sales and you say to someone: we've already met with this prospect six times.

Show me the money!

Let's stop wasting our time.

So unless this prospect is going to put down a financial commitment or sign something,

we're going to stop meeting with this prospect.

It's wasting our time.

Show me the money.

Bond, James Bond.

Well, it's pretty obvious what movie this is from.

James Bond.

Bond, James Bond.

Native speakers use this when introducing yourself in a humorous or stylish way.

And sometimes we use this when ordering a martini, because that is James Bond's signature

drink.

So if I want to sound very stylish, or I'm being humorous, I could say: I don't believe

we've met.

The name's Forrest, Jennifer Forrest.

Now just know it is more common to say my name's Jennifer, but in the movie he sometimes

says "the" name's Bond, James Bond.

The name's Bond, James Bond.

Now to pull this off, to be successful using this, you need to say: Last name.

Dramatic pause.

First name.

Last name.

And you must say this with confidence because James Bond is 100% confident.

My name is Bond.

Good evening.

My name is Bond, James Bond.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

Do you recognize this one?

Oh, this is very famous.

It's from the movie: Gone with the Wind.

This is a very old movie, maybe from the 1930s.

I have not seen this movie, however, I am very familiar with this expression.

Native speakers imitate it a lot.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

This is used to express indifference, I don't care.

Or to respond when someone gives you unsolicited advice.

Advice that you did not ask for.

Frankly is an adverb.

It's used before you're direct, straightforward or honest.

So if I want to be very direct with you, I can say: frankly, your pronunciation needs

improvement.

It's difficult to understand you.

Now, just know that "I don't give a damn" is considered impolite.

I don't give a damn about Walter Tapley.

The safer choice is to say: I don't care.

Don't care.

I don't care.

Now if you use this full movie expression: Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn, you

add some humor to the expression, but it is still an impolite or rude thing to say, depending

on the context.

You could be in a meeting and your coworker says: the client isn't going to be happy when

you tell them you can't meet the deadline.

To show your indifference, you can say: frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn about paper.

And finally, #10.

There's no place like home.

What movie is this from?

The Wizard of Oz.

There's no place like home.

This is used to express nostalgia or appreciation for ones home.

You can use this when you're traveling, when you're homesick, or when you return home,

even after a short period of time, or of course, a longer period of time.

There's no place like home.

I can use this because I just got back after being away for a longer period of time.

I just got back from being in Costa Rica for four months.

It was amazing, but there's no place like home.

There's no place like home.

Or you're visiting your hometown after many years and someone could ask you, how does

it feel to be back after all these years?

You know what they say.

There's no place like home.

Now you have the 10 most famous movie expressions.
