Now, in this episode, I have a question

from an English learner who is going

to study at a university in the United States.

He asked me, Gabby, which is actually

the correct preposition to use when I talk

about where I'm going to study?

Is it "at" university or "in" university?

So this is a very important question,

because if you're telling people what you're doing in the United

States, you should be able to say it correctly,

especially if you're going to study at a university.

So I think you probably heard the answer right there.

The correct answer is "at" a university,

or you can say the name of the university--

I'm going to study at Harvard.

I'm going to study at UCLA.

I'm going to study at-- insert the name of the university

where you will study.

Now, I want to explain why this is so confusing, because there

are some instances where you would

say "in" plus "university."

So let's dig a little deeper.

Let me explain.

So we say "in" for departments.

So, for example, I'm studying at UCLA in the art department,

for example.

Or I'm studying at University of Texas

at Austin in the engineering department.

So for departments, we use "in."

We also use "in" for majors-- I'm majoring in engineering.

I'm majoring in arts, I'm majoring in science, and so on.

Now, one other really interesting use of "in"

is when we're talking about our memories.

So when we want to talk about the period of time

when we were in university-- like, now, I've graduated.

I did my master's in teaching English as a second language.

That's why I'm here with you.

And I want to tell you about my memories

when I was in university, I made some really good friends.

I did a lot of cool stuff.

But I won't go on about that.

I want to tell you, use the proposition

"in" to talk about the period of time.

When I was in university, I joined the soccer club.

When I was in university, I was really

stressed out, because there were a lot of assignments.

I But when I was in university, I

didn't realize it at the time, but it was one

of the best times of my life.

So if you are going to study at a university,
