20 Texting Acronyms and Abbreviations in English You ABSOLUTELY Have to Know

hello guys and welcome back to my youtube  channel i am super excited to be back i took  

two weeks off because i got covered and as you  still can probably hear i have this like really  

weird voice because i still have a cough so i  need to pause you know and cough for some time

before i can keep on speaking but overall i feel  a lot better now and i'm ready to film this video  

for you guys so today we're gonna be talking about  texting in english because texting is such an  

important part of our lives especially when we get  sick i really felt it when i got covered because  

i couldn't interact with anyone and i couldn't  really call anyone it was hard for me to talk so  

i was just texting all day every day and knowing  how native speakers text is extremely important  

and this is something i want to teach you guys in  this video so the first one is wth that stands for  

what the hell before we move on i have to point  out that no one is gonna just say wth right  

no this is just you know you you shouldn't say it  when you just text someone go ahead and use wth  

because it stands for what the hell for example  just got to jacob's party and turns out i wasn't  

invited what the hell so instead of spelling out  what the hell you can just send wth and that's  

it what is this what the hell is happening and  guys here a very interesting part about americans  

is that a lot of americans don't capitalize  words when they just send text messages and  

the second part is punctuation because a lot of  people prefer not to use anything like no commas  

no periods no nothing no exclamation marks just  you know nothing just text and that's it that's  

it the next abbreviation is ppl which means people  and guys when i tell you that native speakers use  

it all the time i really mean it instead of just  spelling out people which is super easy native  

speakers just write ppl i don't know why for  example a lot of people here you should come  

thumbs up as you've noticed from the  last example people often use you or  

your instead of you and your they're pronounced  exactly the same and again it's faster and easier  

to just send one letter instead of a whole word  you hear coming a quick remark here guys if you  

feel like you want to spell everything out there  is nothing wrong with that right it doesn't mean  

that from now on you should only use those  abbreviations because to be completely fair  

no one is gonna do that right you should  just like mix them in sometimes especially  

if like you're joking about something it's a very  informal conversation yeah go ahead and use all  

of those things but if you feel like you want to  spell out people or you want to spell out you of  

course do there's nothing wrong with that moving  on instead of saying never mind you can just text  

nvm you still need my help nah never mind so as  you can notice here i didn't even use a question  

mark like you still need my help i guess people  kind of know like from the conversation and you  

know from everything that is going on that it is  a question and then you can just reply na and vm  

which means never mind well we'll never mind that  now and now let's talk about using na or using  

yep or yeah because this is something that native  speakers use a lot instead of just saying no and  

yes first of all people almost never use yes they  will always prefer to use yeah or yep and the word  

na is even a little bit funny and definitely  informal your birthday is on the 17th right yep  

lol is one of the oldest and most popular slang  terms which stands for laughing out loud send me  

lol that's so funny or you can just say lol a lot  of people even use this when they're talking to  

someone so you can even use this in conversations  like in real life conversation you can say lol  

or you can say lol oh lol and actually guys i've  noticed that americans prefer to laugh this way  

right when they're texting something it's very  common for americans to just text lol even instead  

of haha and it's interesting because right now i'm  learning spanish and in spanish people laugh as  

ja ja because in spanish you pronounce this first  letter as hu so that's why it sounds like haha and  

i'm very curious to know how people laugh in your  native language so let me know in the comments  

moving on to lmao which stands for laughing my ass  off we use it when we mean that something is just  

so funny we can't stop laughing so if something  is extremely funny it's more than lol it's lmao  

just realized i'm wearing different socks lmao  since we started talking about laughing let's  

take a look at jk which stands for just  kidding because you're lazy you're so mean  

jkjk just kidding i'm just kidding come on  tomorrow this abbreviation stands for tomorrow  

and this is actually a great example of how people  just drop all the vowel sounds and yeah this way  

they think it's more convenient honestly i don't  know how it is more convenient to send this bunch  

of consonants instead of just the word tomorrow  but i don't know if it's convenient for people  

they use it and actually it's also very common to  drop vowels in different brand names for example  

tumblr and flickr and grinder they all drop this  like e vowel right we have a lot more examples so  

here is a picture with a lot of different brands  that just drop all those vowels moving on to kkk  

kk or k stands for okay and actually guys we also  have this expression okie dokie and the word oki  

here is spelled with the letter e and that's  the reason why so many people misspelled the  

word ok they actually spell it with the letter e  which is always so surprising to me because it's  

like the word that we use the most i feel like  in english and still a lot of people spell it  

o-k-e-y which is wrong it's only correct if you  want to say okie dokie but if you want to say ok  

it's a y not e y i'll text you later okay all good  okay okey-dokey thanks so much bye and p stands  

for no problem i don't think i'll be able to see  you tonight np no problem again guys when i say  

kk or np this is not how people usually speak  this is just me pronouncing those abbreviations  

because normally people just say no problem or  okay bwt stands for by the way by the way are  

you free tomorrow yep why bc or cause stands for  because and also sometimes i notice people spell  

it like c-o-s but to be completely honest i'm not  sure if the spelling is actually correct like the  

two most popular ways to write because are bc or  cuz i'm really tired because i went to bed at 4 00  

am last night lol gonna go to bed early then idk  stands for i don't know is david home right now  

i don't know rn stands for right now i'm  working right now i'll text you later okay  

or kkk idc stands for i don't care i don't care  about finishing this book anymore that boring  

huh imho or just i am o stands for in my opinion  or in my honest or humble opinion and we use it  

when we just want to be direct and honest for  example your friend is sending you a picture of  

two shirts and they ask you which one and you can  say in my honest opinion the green one is better  

than the purple and you can just text i-m-h-o m-ho  and in my humble opinion the world doesn't change  

very much lmk stands for lemmino and again guys  just make sure when you say let me know you don't  

actually say let me know right we combine the word  let with the word me and we say let me let me know  

let me know when you get back home okay kkk omw  stands for on my way leaving work now on my way  

okay and the last one is ttyl which stands  for talk to you later my meeting soon ttyl  

thumbs up talk to you later yeah i think guys  that's it for all the abbreviations that native  

speakers use all the time and when i say that  they use it all the time guys i really mean it  

because all my american friends like all of these  words i actually took from our conversations  

so you can be safe you can be sure that if  you use all of those phrases all of those  

abbreviations and contractions native speakers  will be able to understand you and i guess i  

actually wanted to read you my messaging  thread with one of my american friends and  

yeah let's take a look at it together and try to  analyze it just got into the uber on my way okay  

didn't know it takes 30 minutes to get to your  place sorry no problem lol it usually doesn't  

from your area probably because of the rain and  hella traffic i'm here coming down yeah guys as  

you can see a lot of communication going on  here not so much because honestly i'm not a  

huge fan of texting i would rather meet with this  person in person and probably that's why i use all  

of those abbreviations so often because i just  want to minimize this time actually texting and  

i want to spend more time chatting face to face  with this person and then see how i spelled out  

minutes instead of just writing 30 minutes you  can just send mints and that's it it just means  

minutes and then let's look at this one probably  because of the rain and hella traffic the word  

hella means a lot of different things it can mean  like extremely hella beautiful right extremely  

beautiful it can also mean like a large amount of  something so here a lot of cars right the traffic  

is horrible hella traffic and then guys the last  two messages are actually super useful because i  

know you're gonna be in this situation one day  too and you've been in those situations when  

you come to someone else and you're there so  like what do you say do you say i have arrived  

it sounds extremely formal you can just say i'm  here and the other person is gonna say coming down  

or just like give me a second i'm gonna come down  and let you in so i think that's gonna be it for
