That expression is: "How come?"

바로 "How come?"입니다.

It's a very popular expression you may see in movies, on TV, or in conversation with

"How come?"은 영화나, 텔레비전 또는 영어를 쓰는 사람들의 대화 속에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 표현이에요.

English speakers.

But it's a very good one to know because we do use it a lot.

자주 사용하기 때문에, 배워두면 좋아요.

So, what does "How come?"

그렇다면, "How come?"은 무슨 뜻일까요?

mean?

Okay, well, first I have a question for you.

좋아요, 먼저 하나 물어보죠.

I have here two sentences.

여기 두 문장이 있는데요.

"Why did you miss your plane?" and "How come you missed your plane?"

"Why did you miss your plane?" 와 "How come you missed your plane?

What is the difference in meaning between these two sentences?

이 두 문장의 의미 차이는 무엇일까요?

Maybe you already know.

아마 이미 알고 계실 수도 있겠죠.

Okay?

So take a guess.

한 번 맞춰보세요.

The difference in meaning is actually they mean the same thing.

사실 두 문장은 같은 뜻이에요.

"How come?" is another way to say "Why?".

"How come?"은 "Why?"를 말하는 다른 방법이에요.

It's just a little bit more informal.

그저 조금 더 일상적(비격식적)일 뿐이에요.

Okay?

So if you're writing, you're going to use "Why?", but if you're speaking you can use

그래서 만약 글쓰기를 한다면 "Why?"를 쓰겠지만, 말하는 중이라면 둘 다 사용해도 되죠.

both. Okay?

"How come?" is informal, it's an informal way to say "Why?"

"How come?"은 "Why?"를 의미하는 비격식적인 말이에요.

And so, by informal, I mean you use it with your friends, with, you know, people you're

비격식적이기 때문에, "How come?"은 친구들이랑 있을 때나 길거리 사람들과 얘기할 때에 쓰지만,

talking to on the street, but you wouldn't use it in an essay. Okay?

에세이에서는 쓰면 안돼요. 알겠나요?

Or for school.

학교 과제를 할 때도요.

Okay, so: "How come?"

그래서 "How come?"은 "Why?"를 의미하죠.

means: "Why?"

So, when we're asking: "How come?"

그래서 "How come?"은

what we're asking about is... we want to know why something happened or the reasons why

왜 어떤 일이 일어났는지나 그 일이 일어난 이유가 궁금할 때 사용해요.

something happened. Okay?

So, for example: "How come you missed your plane?"

예를 들어 "How come you missed your plane?(왜 비행기를 놓쳤나요?"

You know, a reason might be: "Oh, I was late getting to the airport" or "I slept in." Okay?

이유로는 "Oh, I was late getting to the airport.(공항에 가는 데 늦었어)" 나 "I slept in.(늦잠 잤어.)" 정도가 되겠죠.

So these would be the answers to a question like: "How come?"

이것들이 "How come?"의 대답이 될 수 있어요.

So, a lot of the time, teachers will ask this question.

그래서, 선생님들이 자주 이렇게 물어볼 거예요.

"You were late for class today.

"You were late for class today.(오늘 수업에 늦었구나.)

How come?"

How come?(왜 늦었니?)"

That means the teacher wants to know why you were late for class.

그 말은 선생님이 당신이 왜 수업에 늦었는지 알고 싶다는 것이에요.

So now let's look at the grammar of "How come?" and how we can use it in a sentence.

그러면 이제는 "How come?"의 문법과 문장 속에서 어떻게 사용하는지 배워봅시다.

Okay, so again, "How come?" is an informal way to say: "Why?"

좋아요. "How come?"은 "Why"를 말하는 비격식적인 표현이라고 했죠.

So, we often use it in conversation.

그래서 회화에서 자주 사용하죠.

Now let's look at the grammar of "How come?" and how we make a sentence with "How come?"

그러면, "How come?"에 관한 문법과 "How come?"을 어떻게 문장 속에서 사용하는지 알아보죠.

So, I have here: "How come", which is at the beginning, and then we have plus the subject.

여기 "How come"이 시작 부분에 있고요, 그리고 뒤에 주어가 붙어요.

A subject is...

주어로는

It can be: "I", "you", "he", "she", "they", "we", or it can also be a thing, a place,

"I(나)", "you(너)", "he(그)", "she(그녀)", "they(그들)", "we(우리)" 나

다른 물건이나 장소, 사람 등이 될 수 있어요. 문장의 행위자이죠.

or a person, but it's the doer of a sentence.

Then we have the verb.

그리고 동사를 씁니다.

So, for example: "play", "take", "listen", "sing", "eat", these are all verbs.

예를 들어 "play(놀다)", "take(가지다)", "listen(듣다)", "sing(노래하다)", "eat(먹다)" 등이 모두 동사죠.

And then finally we have an object, which comes after the verb in regular English sentences

그리고 마지막으로 목적어를 씁니다, 목적어는 영어 문장에서 보통 동사 뒤에 위치합니다.

and usually those can be people, they can be places, they can be things, so these are

그리고 목적어로는 사람이나, 장소, 사물이 올 수 있습니다.

the objects.

If this is confusing, let's look at some examples, maybe that will help.

만약 이게 헷갈린다면, 예시를 봅시다, 아마 도움이 될 거예요.

So, for example: "How come you"-is the subject-"take"-is the verb, and the object is-"the bus"?

예를 들어 "How come you" 여기서 "you(너)"가 주어, "take(타다)"가 동사, 그리고 "the bus(버스)"가 목적어에요.

"How come you take the bus?"

"How come you take the bus?(왜 버스를 탔니?)"

This means the same thing as: "Why do you take the bus?"

이 문장은 "Why do you take the bus?"와 같은 뜻이에요.

So, here I actually have this written: "Why do you take the bus?"

그래서 여기 "Why do you take the bus?"도 써놨는데요,

And you'll actually notice "How come" is easier in terms of grammar than "Why".

아마 "Why"보다 문법적으로 "How come"이 쉽다는 것을 알아차리셨을 거예요.

If you look here: "Why do you take the bus?" you have this word, here: "do".

"Why do you take the bus?"를 보신다면 여기 "do"가 있죠.

Okay?

In other sentences we say: "Why does he" or "Why didn't he", but there's always something

다른 문장에서는 "Why does he"나 "Why didn't he"를 쓰지만

항상 "do(1,2인칭이나 복수 현재)", "does(3인칭 단수 현재)", "did(과거)", "didn't(과거 부정)"과 같은 것들을 같이써야 하죠.

like: "do", "does", "did", "didn't" here with "Why".

And a lot of students forget to put this here.

그리고 많은 학생들이 그것을 쓰는 것을 까먹어요.

A lot of students will say: "Why you take the bus?"

많은 학생들이 "Why you take the bus?(비문)"이라고 말하죠.

But this is not correct English.

하지만 이것은 정확하지 않아요.

For "Why" we always need something here.

"Why"를 쓸 때에는 여기에 꼭 무엇인가 써줘야 해요.

Now, the nice thing about "How come" is you don't need this.

"How come"의 좋은 점은 그런 것이 필요없다는 것이죠.

Okay?

If you look at "How come", if you can make an English sentence: "you take the bus", you

"How come"을 보다시피, 만약 여러분이 "you take the bus"라는 영어 문장을 만들 수 있다면

can change this into "Why" just by adding "How come".

"How come"만 붙여서 "Why"라는 뜻을 가진 문장을 만들 수 있다는 것이죠.

So, the structure of this is just like a regular English sentence.

즉, "How come"이 없는 문장 자체도 주어와 동사 그리고 목적어가 있는 올바른 영어 문장이라는 거예요.

We have the subject, the verb, and the object, and then we just add "How come" at the front

그리고 우리는 그저 앞에 "How come"을 붙이면 되는 거죠.

So let's look at another example: "How come Toronto isn't the capital of Canada?"

그럼 다른 예시를 봐볼까요? "How come Toronto isn't the capital of Canada?(왜 토론토가 캐나다의 수도가 아니야?)"

So, again, we have: "How come", we have "Toronto" which is the subject, we have "isn't" which

"How come"이 있고, 주어 "Toronto", 동사 "isn't"

is the verb, and we have "the capital", which is the object.

"the capital"이라는 목적어가 있네요.

So, if you want to make a regular sentence, I would just say: "Toronto isn't the capital",

그래서 만약 평서문을 만들고 싶다면 "Toronto isn't the capital(토론토는 수도가 아니다)"라고 하면 돼요.

we can just add "How come" to this, and then it becomes a question, meaning: "Why isn't

여기에 "How come"을 붙인다면, 의문문이 되어

"Why isn't Toronto the capital?(왜 토론토가 수도가 아니야?)"가 되죠.

Toronto the capital?"

"How come John didn't come?" Okay?

"How come John didn't come?(왜 존이 안 왔어?)"

So here we have "How come" at the beginning, "John" which is the subject, and "didn't come",

여기도 "How come"이 앞에 있고, "John"이 주어 그리고

because it's negative form we have "didn't" here, so this is the past, past tense.

과거 부정을 의미하는 "didn't"이 있기 때문에 과거형임을 알 수 있어요.

"Didn't come" is the verb. Okay?

"Didn't come"이 동사네요.

This sentence doesn't have an object.

이 문장은 목적어가 없는 문장이네요.

Not all sentences in English need objects.

모든 영어 문장이 목적어가 필요한 것은 아니에요.

The main thing is that you have a subject and a verb.

주어와 동사는 꼭 있어야 하죠.

Okay, so that might be a little confusing for you.

약간 헷갈리실 수도 있겠지만,

Point here is: "How come" is easier than "Why" because all you need to do is make a basic

중요한 점은 "Why"보다 "How come"이 더 쉽다는 거예요.

One last thing I wanted to say about "How come", you can also use "How come?" just on

You can also just use it, like, you know: "How come" and a question mark.

So, for example, imagine we're having a conversation and I say to you: "Oh, John didn't come today."

예를 들어, 만약 저희가 대화를 나누고 있을 때, 제가 "Oh, John didn't come today.(오늘 존이 안왔네.)"라고 말하면,

You might be wondering: "Oh, why didn't John come?"

여러분은 아마 궁금해 하시겠죠. "Oh, why didn't John come?(왜 존이 안 왔대?)"

So you can just say to me: "How come?" which means: "Why didn't John come?"

그럴 때 그냥 저에게 "Why didn't John come?" 대신 "How come?" 이라고 하시면 돼요.

Okay? Or, you know: -"English is a great language."

또 예를 들어 "English is a great language.(영어는 위대한 언어야.)"

Again, this just means: "Why?"

So it's a very easy thing to use, and I really, really recommend you start using this in your
