Money vocabulary and expressions in English $$$

Hey guys, I'm Alex, thanks for clicking and welcome to this lesson on money vocabulary

and money expressions.

As you can guess, this lesson will talk about different vocabulary and different expressions

we use related to money.

Now, again, these are only five, okay?

There are lots and lots and lots of other expressions related to money, but I'm going

to try to give you five of the most common ones, five common expressions that you can

use when talking about money or people who have money or how to use it in a situation

where you have to pay for something, for example.

Okay, so the first, well, the first piece of vocabulary, the first word is loaded.

Now, this is a slang term.

It is an adjective.

It describes a person.

So here we have Bill Gates is loaded.

Now, if you have some pop culture knowledge, you will know who Bill Gates is.

Bill Gates is the head of Microsoft, right?

So do you think Bill Gates has a lot of money or a little money?

He doesn't have much money.

He has a lot of money.

So if someone is loaded, it means they are rich.

They have a lot of money, okay?

So this just means rich.

They have a lot of money.

All right.

The next one is broke.

Now, I spent all my money.

I'm broke.

So broke is actually the polar opposite of loaded.

If you're broke, it means you have no money, okay?

You have zero money.

So I spent all my money.

I'm broke.

I'm poor.

I have no money, okay?

So this is another adjective.

You can use it to describe yourself, to describe a person, and it means not having any money.

Okay, now again, you can be broke for a long period of time in general, or maybe you can

say, "I'm sorry, I can't go out this weekend.

I'm broke until next Thursday."

So if you have a paycheck, you have a job, you have a paycheck coming next Thursday,

then you can say, "I can't go out.

I'm broke until Thursday.

Thursday, I will have money again," okay?

The next one is on the house.

You can usually hear this or use this in a restaurant.

Now, if I say, "Your hamburger is on the house, and I am part of the restaurant staff.

I am your waiter," and maybe you ordered a meal, and you ordered a hamburger, okay?

But your hamburger, you found an insect inside it.

Maybe you found a fly.

So obviously, you're not going to eat a hamburger with an insect inside it.

So you will show the staff, you'll say, "I'm sorry, I can't eat this.

There's an insect in my hamburger."

They will feel very bad.

They will feel remorseful.

They will feel terrible.

So they will say, "Here, have another hamburger, it's free, okay?

It's on the house."

The house is the establishment.

It's the restaurant, okay?

It's the...

I don't want to call it a company, I guess.

The company, the place that you're eating in.

So your hamburger is on the house.

Your hamburger is free, not only free, but free and paid for by the restaurant, the place

that you went to for this food.

Okay, the next one is "pay up."

Pay up.

Pay up.

What does that mean?

You lost.

Pay up.

Okay, if you have a friendly bet with you and a friend, maybe you play pool, okay?

And you say, "Five dollars.

I will put five dollars.

You will put five dollars.

And if you win, you will get my five dollars.

If I win, you will get my five dollars."

So I play you at pool.

I win.

I say, "You lost.

Pay up," which means pay me now, okay?

Give me the money now.

Pay up.

Come on.

Pay up.

Pay now.

Okay, finally, we have "to pick up the tab."

So if you and I go to a restaurant and, you know, you have been very nice to me lately

and I wanted to take you out to a restaurant, I wanted to do something nice for you, and

I wanted to buy your meal for you, I wanted to do something kind.

So don't worry about it.

I will pick up the tab.

The tab is another way of saying the bill, okay?

So if you pick up the tab, you pick up the tab, you pick up the bill, this means you

will pay for the food, okay?

So you can use this in a bar setting.

You can say, "Who will pick up the tab?

Who is picking up the tab tonight?

Is it me?

Is it you?"

If you have a wife, you have a girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, sometimes they pick up

the tab, the bill, sometimes you pick up the tab or the bill, okay?

So don't worry about it.

I will pick up the tab.

I will pay for the bill.

Pay the bill or pay for the bill.

Okay, guys, so again, here are some money expressions for you, loaded, it's an adjective,

you can use it to describe a person who is rich, broke, I spent all my money, I'm broke,

I don't have any money, zero money, on the house, it's free, paid for by the restaurant

or whatever establishment you went to, pay up, pay me now, okay?

Pick up the tab to pay for the bill.
