English Listening Practice: Phone Conversations

Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking. You

are learning English with engVid. In today's lesson,

I am going to help you practice your listening

comprehension skills. In this video, you will

hear two dialogues. At the end of each dialogue,

I will ask you four questions, so listen carefully

to make sure you answer them correctly. After

I ask you the questions, I will also give you

the answers immediately so you know if you got

the correct answer. I recommend that you rewind

and pause the video as needed. The difficulty

level of these listenings is intermediate,

so you can test yourself and see where your skill

level is at. Also, if you enjoy the listening

listening? Let's start with the first dialogue.

[Phone ringing]

No, unfortunately, I'd prefer an afternoon appointment.

Okay, let me see here. Oh, we actually have a place next Thursday at 2 p.m.

That would be much better. Thank you.

Not a problem. I've added you to the calendar for

next Thursday at 2 p.m. Is there anything else?

Actually, yes. Our son is turning 18, and

he's going to need to transition away from his

pediatric dentist. I was wondering if your office had room for a new patient.

That's a better question for our regular

receptionist. I'm just filling in this week.

The regular receptionist will be back next week,

so you could ask her in person when you come for

your cleaning. Oh, okay. That makes sense.

Is there anything else? No, thank you. That's

everything. Great. So, we'll see you next week. Yeah, perfect. Bye for now. Bye-bye.

And now the questions. Let's see what you heard.

Question number one. What kind of clinic is Derek calling?

I will give you a few seconds to answer.

Okay. If you were paying attention, you may have

heard or you will have heard he is calling a

dental clinic. Number two. Would Derek prefer

a morning, afternoon, or evening appointment?

He would prefer an afternoon appointment.

Number three. Why does Derek's son need a new dentist?

And if you need more time, don't be shy, don't be afraid to pause the video

So, why does Derek's son need a new dentist?

Because he is turning 18 years old and he

needs to transition from his pediatric dentist.

can't the receptionist answer Derek's final question?

So, the answer to this one. He is not the

regular receptionist. He doesn't know the answer.

Hey, it's David. How's it going? Not bad, just

taking it easy. You? Is everything okay? You've

never called me before. I'm okay, but I actually

need a favor. Okay, what's up? So, I'm at the

garage getting some work done on my car. I thought I

would be out of here quickly, but you know how it

goes. They found some other problems and Anna's at

work and it's going to take longer than... You

need a ride. I need a ride. Can you help me out?

You know, I actually have to do some grocery

shopping, but I can pick you up on the way to

the store if you don't mind taking like a

20-minute detour before I drop you off at home.

Yeah, no problem at all. You're doing me a favor

and I actually need to pick up some things from

the store as well. Perfect. I'll be on my way soon.

See ya. Wait, don't you need the name of the garage?

Oh my god, you're right. Sorry, it totally skipped

my mind. Oh, someone else is calling me. Could you

just text me the name of the place? Yeah, no

problem. Go do what you have to do. Thanks again.

See ya. Bye.

And now the questions. Number one, where is David?

Okay, so David is at the mechanics, right? He's

getting his car fixed at the mechanics, so he's

at... You can say he's at the mechanic or he's at

the mechanics as well. And again, you can always

go back, rewind, pause the video, take your time.

Number two, why is David calling his friend?

The short answer, he needs a ride, right? A ride

means you need a friend to come and get you with

a vehicle and drive you home or somewhere else.

Speaking of somewhere else, question number three,

where will David go before he goes home? Hmm. He will go to the grocery store.

Did you get that one? Okay. And number four,

what will David do after he hangs up the phone?

Okay, the answer, he will text the name of the

garage or the mechanic. He will text the name

of the garage to his friend. Did you get that?
