MUCH or MANY or A LOT OF??? Countable and Uncountable Nouns!

and 'many'

Hi guys, today we're going to talk about something that

سلام بچه ها، امروز می خواهیم در مورد چیزی صحبت کنیم که

'many' of my students get wrong 'a lot' of the time

"بسیاری" از دانش آموزان من اغلب اشتباه می کنند.

This is the difference between 'much', 'many', 'a lot of' and 'lots of'

Well firstly these two mean the same thing

خوب اولاً این دو معنی یکسانی دارند،

you can use them interchangeably

شما می توانید آنها

These ones, however, can not be used for the same nouns

and I'm going to explain how you use them right now!

را به جای هم استفاده کنید.

So with uncountable nouns

بنابراین با اسم‌های غیرقابل شمارش

Well these refer to something that can't be counted

خوب اینها به چیزی اشاره دارند که قابل شمارش

and they don't normally have a plural form

نیست و معمولاً شکل جمع ندارند،

Some exceptions though are drinks

اما برخی استثناها نوشیدنی‌ها هستند.

If I'm in a restaurant and I ask for two coffees

Well I'm really asking for two cups of coffee

دو فنجان قهوه

That's why I can say two coffEES, with the plural

به همین دلیل است که می توانم بگویم دو قهوه، با جمع.

If I ask for two sugars in my tea

Well we really know that I'm asking for two sachets

or two cubes of sugar in my tea

So, on their own we can't use them as plurals.

نمی توان از آنها به عنوان جمع استفاده کرد.

So, the uncountable nouns go with 'much'

بنابراین، اسم‌های غیرقابل شمارش با «بسیار» همراه می‌شوند

And 'much' is something we tend to use in the

و «بسیار» چیزی است که ما تمایل به استفاده از آن در حالت

interrogative or the negative form

پرسشی یا منفی

I don't have much water

Do you have much homework?

داریم.

And, the countables go with 'many'

و، شمارش‌پذیرها با 'بسیاری' می‌آیند.

We can use this affirmative, negative and interrogative

ما می‌توانیم از این مثبت، منفی و سؤالی استفاده کنیم.

I have many apples

I don't have many windows

There aren't many girls

Which is never normally a problem

So for the affirmative

much, especially, can sound incredibly formal

صدای فوق العاده رسمی

I have much water

من آب زیادی

Ooof!

دارم اووف!

It sounds a bit..

کمی به نظر می

It sounds a it too much!

رسد.. خیلی زیاد به نظر می رسد!

So instead of saying 'much' in the affirmative, I would use

بنابراین به‌جای مثبت گفتن «بسیار»،

a lot of water

از آب

I have a lot of water, I have lots of water

زیاد استفاده می‌کنم، آب زیادی دارم، آب

Many, on the other hand, is more widely used with the affirmative

زیادی دارم، از سوی دیگر، بیشتر با علامت مثبت استفاده می‌شود

So, I have many apples

بنابراین، من سیب‌های زیادی دارم.

I have a lot of apples

من سیب های زیادی دارم

They're more or less the same in this case

در این مورد کم و بیش یکسان هستند
