MUCH or MANY or A LOT OF??? Countable and Uncountable Nouns!

Hi guys, today we're going to talk about something that

hola chicos hoy nosotros vamos a hablar sobre algo que

'many' of my students get wrong 'a lot' of the time

muchos de mis estudiantes se equivocan mucho, todo el tiempo

This is the difference between 'much', 'many', 'a lot of' and 'lots of'

esta es la diferencia entre "much" "many" "a lot of" y "a lots of"

Well firstly these two mean the same thing

bueno, primeramente estos dos significan l misma cosa

you can use them interchangeably

tu puedes usarlos indistintamente

These ones, however, can not be used for the same nouns

estos,como sea, no pueden ser usados para la mismos sustantivos

and I'm going to explain how you use them right now!

y yo voy a explicar como usarlos justo ahora

So with uncountable nouns

asi que, sustantivo incontable

Well these refer to something that can't be counted

Bueno estos se refieren a algo que no puede ser contado

and they don't normally have a plural form

y ellos normalmente no tienen una forma plural

Some exceptions though are drinks

algunas excepciones aunque son bebidas

If I'm in a restaurant and I ask for two coffees

si yo estoy en un restaurante y yo pregunto por dos cafes

Well I'm really asking for two cups of coffee

bueno, yo estoy preguntando realmente por dos tazas de cafe

That's why I can say two coffEES, with the plural

eso es porque yo puedo decir dos cafes, con el plural

If I ask for two sugars in my tea

si yo pregunto por dos azúcar en mi te

Well we really know that I'm asking for two sachets

bueno nosotros realmente sabemos que estoy preguntando por dos bolsitas

or two cubes of sugar in my tea

o dos cubos de azúcar en mi te

So, on their own we can't use them as plurals.

así que, en su propio nosotros no podemos usarlos como plurales

So, the uncountable nouns go with 'much'

asi que, los sustantivos incontables van con "much"

And 'much' is something we tend to use in the

interrogative or the negative form

I don't have much water

yo no tengo mucha agua

Do you have much homework?

tienes mucha tarea?

And, the countables go with 'many'

y,los contables van con "many"

We can use this affirmative, negative and interrogative

nosotros podemos usar esta afirmativa,negativa e interrogativa

I have many apples

yo tengo muchas manzanas

I don't have many windows

no tengo muchas ventanas

There aren't many girls

no hay muchas chicas

Which is never normally a problem

Lo cual nunca suele ser un problema

So for the affirmative

asi que, para la afirmacion

much, especially, can sound incredibly formal

"much" especialmente puede sonar increíblemente formal

I have much water

tengo mucha agua

Ooof!

uuff!

It sounds a bit..

Suena un poco ...

It sounds a it too much!

¡Suena demasiado!

So instead of saying 'much' in the affirmative, I would use

asi que, en lugar de decir "much" en la afirmacion, yo usaría

a lot of water

mucha agua

I have a lot of water, I have lots of water

tengo mucha agua,tengo un montón de agua

Many, on the other hand, is more widely used with the affirmative

"many", de otra manera,es mas extensamente usado con la afirmacion

So, I have many apples

asi que, tengo muchas manzanas

I have a lot of apples

Tengo muchas manzanas

They're more or less the same in this case

ellas so mas o menos lo mismo en este caso
