MUCH or MANY or A LOT OF??? Countable and Uncountable Nouns!

'much'

and 'many'

much와

many에 대해 알려드리려해요.

시작합시다!

Hi guys, today we're going to talk about something that

안녕 여러분, 오늘 우리가 얘기해 볼것은

'many' of my students get wrong 'a lot' of the time

대부분 학생들이 잘못 파악하는 것인데요.

This is the difference between 'much', 'many', 'a lot of' and 'lots of'

그건 바로 'much, many, a lot of, 그리고 lots of의 차이'에요.

Well firstly these two mean the same thing

일단 먼저, 이 두개는 의미가 같아요.

you can use them interchangeably

그래서 서로 바꿔서 사용할 수 있어요.

These ones, however, can not be used for the same nouns

반면에, 이 두개는 각각 다른 부류의 명사에 쓰여요.

and I'm going to explain how you use them right now!

그래서 지금 바로! 이 두개를 어떻게 사용해야 하는지 설명할거에요.

So with uncountable nouns

자, 셀 수 없는 명사는

Well these refer to something that can't be counted

우리가 하나, 둘, 셋 이렇게 수를 셀 수 없는 것들을 말하고

and they don't normally have a plural form

그래서 대부분 복수형이 아예 없어요.

Some exceptions though are drinks

몇가지 예외가 있다면 drinks라던가

If I'm in a restaurant and I ask for two coffees

또 레스토랑에서 'two coffees'를 시킬때

Well I'm really asking for two cups of coffee

'two coffees'가 커피들이 아닌 '커피 2잔'을 의미하는 거죠.

That's why I can say two coffEES, with the plural

그래서 두개의 coffeeS라고 복수형을 사용할 수 있는거에요.

If I ask for two sugars in my tea

차에 '두 설탕들'을 넣어달라고 한다면

Well we really know that I'm asking for two sachets

'설탕가루 두 팩'을 넣어달라는 말임을 바로 알테죠.

or two cubes of sugar in my tea

혹은 각설탕 두 조각을 뜻하는 것임을요.

So, on their own we can't use them as plurals.

결국, 그 자체로서는 복수형으로 사용할 수가 없어요. (항상 다른 의미를 가질 뿐)

So, the uncountable nouns go with 'much'

그래서, 셀 수 없는 명사들은 much와 함께 쓰여요.

And 'much' is something we tend to use in the

그리고 much는 주로

interrogative or the negative form

의문문이나 부정문에 쓰여요.

I don't have much water

예를들어, 물이 별로(많이) 없어

Do you have much homework?

너 숙제 할 거 많아?

And, the countables go with 'many'

다음으로, 셀 수 있는 명사는 many와 쓰여요.

We can use this affirmative, negative and interrogative

many는 긍정문, 부정문, 의문문에 쓸 수 있어요.

I have many apples

나에겐 사과가 많다.

I don't have many windows

우리 집엔 창문이 많이 없다.

There aren't many girls

여자애들이 많이(별로) 없다.

Which is never normally a problem

이건(여자가 많이 없는 거) 사실상 문제될 건 없죠.

So for the affirmative

자, 긍정문에 있어서는

much, especially, can sound incredibly formal

'much'를 쓰면 굉장히 딱딱하고 이상하게 들려요.

I have much water

물을 *많이 갖고 있다.

Ooof!

어후...

It sounds a bit..

이거 좀 약간...

It sounds a it too much!

좀 약간 너무 갔네요! 오바하는 거 같아요.

So instead of saying 'much' in the affirmative, I would use

그래서 저라면 긍정문에 'much'를 사용하기 보다는

a lot of water

'a lot of' water

I have a lot of water, I have lots of water

나는 물을 많이(a lot of = lots of) 갖고 있다.

Many, on the other hand, is more widely used with the affirmative

반면에, many의 경우 긍정문과 많이 쓰이는데요.

So, I have many apples

예를 들면, 나에게는 사과가 여러 개 있다.

I have a lot of apples

나에게는 사과가 여러 개 있다.

They're more or less the same in this case

이 문장에서는 many랑 a lot of 거의 같게 쓰여요.
