MUCH or MANY or A LOT OF??? Countable and Uncountable Nouns!

Hi guys, today we're going to talk about something that

ciao ragazzi, oggi parleremo di qualcosa che

'many' of my students get wrong 'a lot' of the time

"molti" dei miei studenti sbagliano " molte " volte

This is the difference between 'much', 'many', 'a lot of' and 'lots of'

questa è la differenza fra ""much", "many", "a lot of " e "lots of"

Well firstly these two mean the same thing

bene, prima di tutto queste due indicano la stessa cosa

you can use them interchangeably

potete usarle indifferentemente

These ones, however, can not be used for the same nouns

queste due, però, non possono essere usate per gli stessi nomi

and I'm going to explain how you use them right now!

So with uncountable nouns

così con i nomi non numerabili

Well these refer to something that can't be counted

be, questi si riferiscono a qualcosa che non può essere contata

and they don't normally have a plural form

e loro normalmente non hanno una forma al plurale

Some exceptions though are drinks

anche se alcune eccezioni sono le bevande

If I'm in a restaurant and I ask for two coffees

se sono in un ristorante e chiedo per 2 caffè (COFFEES)

Well I'm really asking for two cups of coffee

be, sto davvero chiedendo per 2 tazze di caffè

That's why I can say two coffEES, with the plural

è per questo che posso dire coffEES con il plurale

If I ask for two sugars in my tea

se chiedo per 2 zuccheri nel mio tè

Well we really know that I'm asking for two sachets

beh, noi sappiamo in realtà che sto chiedendo 2 bustine

or two cubes of sugar in my tea

o 2 cubetti di zucchero nel mio tè

So, on their own we can't use them as plurals.

così, non possiamo usarli come plurali da soli

So, the uncountable nouns go with 'much'

così, i nomi non numerabili vanno con "much"

And 'much' is something we tend to use in the

interrogative or the negative form

I don't have much water

io non ho molta (much) acqua

Do you have much homework?

hai molti (much) compiti?

And, the countables go with 'many'

e, i nomi numerabili vanno con "many"

We can use this affirmative, negative and interrogative

possiamo usare questo con le forme affermative, negative e interrogative

I have many apples

ho molte (many) mele

I don't have many windows

non ho molte (many) finestre

There aren't many girls

non ci sono molte (many) ragazze

Which is never normally a problem

che non è mai un problema normalmente

So for the affirmative

così per la forma affermativa

much, especially, can sound incredibly formal

"much", specialmente, può suonare incredibilmente formale

I have much water

io ho molta (much) acqua

Ooof!

ooof!

It sounds a bit..

suona un po'

It sounds a it too much!

suona un po' "troppo"!

So instead of saying 'much' in the affirmative, I would use

a lot of water

I have a lot of water, I have lots of water

io ho molta acqua( a lot of ),io ho molta acqua (lots of)

Many, on the other hand, is more widely used with the affirmative

So, I have many apples

così, io ho molte (many) mele

I have a lot of apples

ho molte ( a lot of ) mele

They're more or less the same in this case

sono più o meno lo stesso in questo caso
