British Bitesize Lesson #1: SKATE

I don't know if you celebrate Christmas

but I do and what I particularly like

about Christmas is the giving

so whether you celebrate or not i'm

going to give you the gift of 25

bite-sized english lessons and today our

lesson is all about the word skate now

a skate can be something you put on your

feet in order to move fast and we have a

few different types of skate. We have a

roller skate which would also be

referred to as a quad. We also have

inline skates where those wheels are set

in one long line making it appear like a

land version of an ice-skate. Now an ice-skate

has no wheels just a blade and this is

to help you to move across ice. So we use

the ice skate for skating on ice. Some

very brave people like to take to a

skate board which is a board with four

wheels on it.

And you're not strapped on so it's very easy to

fall off.

There are two other uses that I know of for

the word skate, one of them is a type of

fish and the other one is to pass over

something quite quickly, so if there's a

difficult subject that I don't want to

talk about I might skate over the

details and not talk about it very much

because I just want to pass by quickly. A

common idiom that we have here in the UK

is 'get your skates on' and this simply

means hurry up. So it's nearly Christmas

you need to get shopping

so get your skates on and get down to

the shops
