British Bitesize Lesson #9: KISS

hello and welcome to English like a

native

my name is Anna and today is the 9th of

25 Whiteside lessons which I'm making

especially for you because it's

Christmas

so today we're talking about the word

Kiss A kiss is where you press your lips

against something usually somebody

else's lips or somebody else's skin a

very long kiss with maybe your mouth

open, not like that is called a snog

but we're not talking about snog today

we're talking about kiss but we could

also use the word kiss just to mean

gently touch for example and this is a

secret between you and me because it's

very naughty when my grandma is reverse

parking her car she will say kiss kiss

kiss kiss kiss as she's backing up what

she's looking for and waiting for is her

car bumper touching very gently the

other car bumper behind her and then she

knows she's gone too far

so she goes kiss-kiss kiss-kiss

oh there we go

and they she'll drive forward it's insane

but that's what my grandma does my

grandmother is wonderful so to kiss can

be lips touching something gently or

anything touching something gently like

my grandma kissing the other car with

her car bumper

there are also many phrases that we use

which involve the word kiss for example

I might blow you a kiss

you'll also hear parents say to their

child let me kiss it better

so if a child is hurt themselves out

then the i will say let me kiss it

better and they give it a kiss to make

it feel better

there you go all better in the magazines

you might read lots of kiss and tell

stories it's where somebody kisses and

gets quite intimate with somebody

usually someone famous and then tells

all the reporters and all the newspapers

and magazines so that they can write

about it in all the publications that

everybody to read it's not very nice but

kiss and tell

I never kiss and tell you might kiss it

goodbye

that means you can say goodbye it's over

no chance for example if i was to offer

you an opportunity to do something for

me but you upset me and I want to take

that opportunity away i might say to you

when you can kiss that opportunity

goodbye to go a step further from that

if you're really upset with someone you

could say you can kiss my arse this is

just an expression to mean no way I

don't think so no you can kiss my arse

that is very different to a kiss arse

meaning that somebody is sucking up so

they are trying to manipulate their way

into someone's favor for example if I

was trying to get a promotion at work i

might be extra nice to my boss making

lots of cups of tea make him cake i

might even tell him how wonderful and

clever he is all the time and I would be

a kiss arse

you're wonderful I think you're amazing

would you like some tea would you like

some cake

I'm kissing his arse I'm being a kiss arse

finally we have the kiss of life the

kiss of life is when someone has stopped

breathing their heart is not beating and

they are unconscious practically dead

and you come along you put your mouth

over their mouth and you breathe for them

so you give them breath and then you do

compressions and you're literally giving

them life you circulate their blood and

you give them breath and air and oxygen

so the kiss of life
