NEVER Say This in English. Offensive English Phrases You Should AVOID in the Conversation

Hey guys, today I wanna tell you about the  phrases you should NEVER say to your friends,  

collegues, classmates and any  native speakers at work or  

at the university. And I’ll give better phrases  you can use instead. Let’s get started.

That’s a bad idea. By telling this you  make the other person feel uncomfortable,  

and you risk to offend them. Instead of saying: That’s a bad idea,  

it’s better to say: I’m not  so sure that’s a good idea.

I hate this colour. Instead of saying I  

hate this colour, you can say I  am not too fond of this colour. 

The verb ‘hate’ sounds really rude and very informal.

The next one. Come here.  Instead of saying Come here,  

you should say: Could you come here? Even though  you may feel very close with your groupmates or  

collegues, it’s better to choose polite  appropriate phrases. Could you come here?

Your work is awfu Instead of saying Your work is awful,  

you should say - Your work is not really up  to standard. Even if you don’t like the work,  

of course you don’t wanna hurt anyone, and you  should be careful when you express your opinion.

The next phrase you should NEVER  use. This report isn’t good. 

You should say - I’m not quite  satisfied with this report. 

The second phrase is more polite and professional.

Tell me when the meeting starts. Instead of  this phrase, you should say - Let me know when  

the meeting starts. The phrase ‘tell me’ is an  imperative and it’s kind of instruction, but in  

the office or at the university we should avoid  this phrase because it might sound offensive.

No. No.

It’s one of the basic English  words, but when we say  

No, we sound kind of negative and even aggressive. 

Instead of saying No, you should definitely  say – I’m alright, thanks or I’m good, thanks.

The next one. Can I borrow your pen? It’s better to say - Could I borrow your pen? 

‘Could I?” is a very polite way  to ask something, and it’s formal. 

When I ask a member of my family,  I can say “Can I borrow your pen”  

and when we request something  at work, we use formal phrases.

Another phrase you shouldn’t use  at the office and university is 

Leave me alone. Instead of saying Leave me alone,  

use a politer alternative.  Sorry, I’m a bit busy right now.

The next phrase is It’s hot, open the window. 

It’s better to say - Do you  mind if I open the window?

Again, it’s a polite way of  asking someone to do something 

“Do you mind?”
