Vacation Vocabulary For Fluent English

so I just got back from a little vacation and  I thought I would tell some stories from that

an interesting video for those who want to speak  more fluently uh so the first story is I was in

Okinawa as I just mentioned with my family my mom  actually came out to visit me so we were enjoying

our time there uh and there is a pool at the hotel  where we stayed and my daughters love getting into

the pool and they're starting to learn how to swim  more and my older daughter Arya up until this trip

uh she had almost always held her nose like this  so she you know holds on to her nose when she gets

under the water to make sure that she's not uh you  know getting water up her nose so she would try to

okay you don't have to do that uh and then I would  show her look I'm not using my hands and I would

not getting up uh but she still didn't believe me  and she was still saying I can't so I had an idea  

그런데 아직도 제 말을 믿지 못하시더라고요.

about something I would try differently this  time or this uh this past week while I was on  

이번 번이나 이번번에 다르게 시도해볼 아이디어가 있었는데 어 지난주에

the vacation and so around the pool uh there  was a little Fountain so just like a little  

휴가를 갔을 때 수영장 주변에 어 작은 분수가 있어서 마치 작은

Fountain like this had some water coming out and  I went to the bathroom and found some cups and uh  

분수처럼 물이 좀 나오던데 내가 화장실에 가서 컵 몇 개를 발견했는데 uh

when I found the cups I was really excited uh  you know of course I understand she's nervous  

컵을 발견했을 때 정말 신났어요 uh 당연히 그녀가

about not wanting to get water up her nose but  I wanted to show her exactly what's happening  

코에 물이 들어가고 싶지 않아서 긴장하고 있다는 건 이해하지만 정확히 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 보여주고 싶었어요

uh when she goes underwater so I took a cup it's  just a little plastic cup you could see through it  

uh 그녀가 갈 때 수중에서 컵을 가져갔죠. 그건 들여다 볼 수 있는 작은 플라스틱 컵이에요.

which is nice uh and so I put the cup just turned  it upside down and put it down into the water  

좋네요 어. 그래서 컵을 거꾸로 뒤집어서 물에 내려놓았어요.

so if you can imagine we got our Fountain here  here's the water level like this and I put a cup  

상상이 되신다면 여기에 분수가 있습니다. 물 높이를 이렇게 맞추고 컵을 넣습니다. 그래서

in so I put the cup just a like a small cup like  this and of course there's air uh inside the cup  

컵을 이렇게 작은 컵처럼 넣었습니다. 물론 컵 안에는 공기가 있습니다. 어,

and so you can you can feel inside here where the  air is up here even though there's there there's a  

그래서 여기 안에 공기가 있는 것을 느낄 수 있습니다.

little water that gets in the in the cup obviously  uh because the water is pushing up on the air so  

저기 컵에 작은 물이 들어가는 게 당연해요  어 물이 공기 위로 올라오니까

the air is getting a little bit compressed but  as I push the cup down and I was showing her  

공기가 약간 압축되기 때문이죠. 하지만 컵을 아래로 밀고 그녀에게 보여주면서

look I'm pushing the cup down but the air is still  in there and so it's it can't get out and that's  

내가 밀고 있는 모습을 보여줬어요 컵을 아래로 내리는데 공기가 여전히 안에 있어서 빠져나가지 못하고 그래서

why the water can't fill the cup up so even if I  push the water or push the cup way down deep uh in  

물이 컵을 채울 수 없으니까 내가 물을 밀거나 컵을 깊숙히 밀어 넣어도 uh 물 속에서

the water the you could see that there's still  a bunch of air still in there uh but if I tip  

아직 거기에 공기가 잔뜩 남아 있는 걸 볼 수 있겠지만 어 그런데 내가 컵을 이렇게 기울이면

the cup like this I turn the cup to the side then  obviously the air comes back out and you can see  

컵을 옆으로 돌리면 당연히 공기가 다시 나오고 보시

now there's water that fills up the cup and so  I asked her to try that too so I said look you  

다시피 이제 물이 컵을 채우고 있는 거죠. 나도 해보라고 해서

can you can push on the cup and it's actually  hard to push it down there because it's filled  

컵을 밀어도 된다고 했더니 컵이

with all that air and your nose works the same  way and something kind of clicked in her mind uh  

공기로 가득 차 있고 코도 똑같은 방식으로 작동하고 뭔가가 그녀의 마음에 찰칵 소리가 나기 때문에 컵을 밀어넣는 것이 실제로 어렵습니다. 어

and she understood oh like look at that it's  it's you know that I actually don't have to  

그리고 그녀는 이해했어요 오, 보세요, 제가 실제로는

have like the water just rushing up into my nose  because there's really nowhere to go if I just  

물이 내 코로 들이닥칠 필요가 없다는 걸 아시잖아요. 왜냐하면 제가 숨을 쉬지 않으면 정말 갈 곳이 없거든요.

don't breathe I'm just kind of holding my breath  and the water can't get up into my nose and so

once she understood that then she really felt much  more confident especially trying it herself and  

그 사실을 이해한 후에는 훨씬 더 자신감을 느꼈고 특히 직접 시도해 보았는데 와,

and seeing that like wow look the water doesn't go  in there and then she went in the water and gave  

물이 거기로 들어가지 않는 걸 보고는 가더군요. 물 속에서 한 번

it a try and it was fine and she said wow look at  that I can do it and so she was not just swimming  

시도해 봤는데 괜찮았는데 와 봐 내가 할 수 있다고 하더군요. 그래서

with one hand anymore she was able to swim around  the pool and she got to enjoy herself and learn  

더 이상 한 손으로만 수영하는 것이 아니라 수영장에서 수영을 할 수 있게 되었고 즐기고 배울 수 있게 되었습니다.

more swimming and and do all all kinds of things  like that so she just had uh an idea that needed  

수영을 더 하고 온갖 일을 다 하니까 그 사람은 uh

to be broken uh about holding her nose and and  she knew okay she can kind of trust me but she  

코를 잡는 것에 대해 깨뜨려야 할 생각이 있었을 뿐이고 그녀는 나를 어느 정도 믿을 수 있다는 걸 알았지만

really had to see like a really good experience  uh something that really could prove to her that

it worked but ultimately so even though I could  show her this ultimately she still had to try

this herself okay and so the reason I share this  story and I Shar this uh with with some learners

recently uh is it even if I I can try to make  the language super easy for people and show you

exactly what to do but if you don't follow it and  don't give it a try then there's really not much I

can do so in English maybe you have some similar  expression in your native language uh we say you

can so you can lead a horse to water

말을 물가로 끌고 갈 수는 있지만 물을

but you can't make him drink so you  can lead a horse to water but you can't

마시게 할 수는 없지만 말을 물가로 이끌 수 있도록

make so you can lead a horse to water but you  can't make him drink so I can bring a horse I  

만들 수는 없습니다. 물을 마시게 할 수는 없지만 말을 데려오도록 할 수는 없습니다.

can you know like have a horse and hold the the  little the strings we call those the reins of  

말을 가지고 우리가 말의 고삐라고 부르는 작은 끈을 잡고 있는 방법을 알고 계시나요?

the horse I can bring the horse over to water  but I can't force the horse to do anything so  

말을 물에 데려갈 수는 있지만 할 수는 있습니다. 말에게 아무것도 하도록 강요하지 마세요.

ultimately the horse still has to drink and so we  use this expression often when people are you know

trying to say like trying to teach something but  the the person still has to give it a try okay so  

all the things I teach hopefully you're going out  and applying those things I can't force anyone to

you will learn faster uh so anyway uh when we  have expressions like this uh this is just an

additional tip here uh I call this my my uh think  and Shrink technique uh but if you if we have

a larger expression like this often natives  are only saying the first part of it because

everybody knows or at least most adults know the  expression and you don't have to say the whole

thing so we just say you can lead a horse to water  and stop there all right so you don't have to say

the whole thing you can lead a horse to water but  you can't make him drink so everybody knows that

and many other Expressions follow this same form  where there's a longer expression or a proverb

or a saying something like that but people just  say uh the beginning of it like don't count your

chickens before they hatch all right so don't  count your chickens before they hatch this is  

닭이 부화하기 전에는 세지 마세요. 그러니 닭을 세지 마세요라고 말합니다. 닭이 부화하기 전에 이것은

an expression where uh people are talking about  like don't don't make an assumption that you'll  

어 사람들이 다음과 같이 말하는 표현입니다.

have something before you actually have it so if  you think something might happen don't bet like  

실제로 갖기 전에 뭔가를 갖게 될 것이라고 가정하지 마세요. 그러니 무슨 일이 일어날 것이라고 생각한다면 내기하지 마세요

for sure that it will happen maybe it will maybe  it won't so don't count your chickens before they  

확실하게 일어날 수도 있을 수도 있고 그렇지 않을 수도 있으니 닭이 부화하기 전에는 세지 마세요.

hatch so in the chicken case maybe you have a  bunch of eggs and you're counting the eggs oh  

그러니 닭의 경우에는 알이 잔뜩 있고 알의 수를 세고 있을 수도 있어요 오

I know I'm going to get this many chickens but  maybe some of them die or something happens to  

내가 이걸 얻을 거라는 걸 알아요 많은 닭이 있지만 그 중 일부는 죽거나 무슨 일이 일어날 수도 있으므로 병아리가 부화하기

them so don't count your chickens before they  hatch but we just abbreviate this we just say  

전에 닭 수를 세지 마세요.

don't count your chickens all right so you can  lead a horse to water don't count your chickens  

닭의 수를 세어 보세요.

all right so I just wanted to share this quick  story because I I thought it was a really good

ways so here's the situation here's the story  that happened uh one of my favorite desserts it's

like amazing really good I enjoyed it a lot but  this the the one at a like a dinner buffet was not  

정말 좋았어요 많이 즐거웠는데 이건 디너뷔페 같은 건

so good and I was really puzzled by why that was  anyway uh so my mom was asking me oh I I you said  

별로 안 좋았고 왜 그랬는지 정말 의아했어요. 어쨌거나 엄마가 저한테 아라고 그러셨잖아요

you didn't really like that tier missu so I I was  I was really raving to be to Rave about something  

그 층이 별로 마음에 안 든다고 하셨잖아요 아가씨 그래서 나는 ~ I was really raving to be to Rave about what

to Rave r a ve e to Rave about something means  to say well something is really exciting like  

to Rave r a ve to Rave about what 의미는 뭔가가 정말 흥미롭다고 말하는 것입니다.

I'm saying wow that that stuff is really good this  tiu was amazing I'm raving about about it so I'm  

그래서

praising it to Rave about it so I was raving about  the TI missu and my mom asked me oh well if you if  

Rave에게 칭찬하고 있어요 그래서 TI 미슈에 대해 열광했는데 엄마가 아 그럼

you don't really like that other tiramisu why are  you eating it and I said any port in a storm any  

다른 티라미수는 별로 안 좋아하시냐고 물으셨는데 왜 그걸 먹고 있다고 했더니 아무 포트나 넣었다고 하더군요. 폭풍이

port in a storm any port in a storm and my mom  thought that was pretty funny and it was just  

몰아치는 항구 폭풍이 몰아치는 항구 그리고 엄마는 그것이 꽤 재미있다고 생각했고

an interesting thing that I used and and often  people in these videos here on YouTube people  

내가 사용한 흥미로운 일이었고 종종 여기 YouTube의 이 동영상에 나오는 사람들이

ask do I speak this way when I'm talking with  native speakers like my parents or friends or

other people just other native speakers uh and one  of the things that I don't really do very much of

in these videos is using a lot of slang or idioms  or Expressions other things like that that people

might not know so if I want to use something  I should teach it and help people understand  

모를 수도 있으니 뭔가를 사용하고 싶다면 그것을 가르쳐서 사람들이 이해하도록 도와야 합니다. 단지 단순히

what it means rather than just I don't just  like use Expressions uh without helping people  

표현을 사용하는 것을 좋아하지 않는 것보다 그 의미가 무엇인지 이해하도록 돕지 않고 표현을 사용하는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다.

understand what they mean all right but this is  a story about using the vocabulary so I can help  

단어를 사용해서 뜻을 이해하는 데 도움을 드릴 수 있지만

you understand what it means but it's a very  useful expression any port in a storm so let  

폭풍우가 치는 어느 항구에서나 매우 유용한 표현이므로

me just help you understand this situation again  uh so we got two TI misu desserts uh one of them

was really good I was raving about it and the  second one was it was not so good it was it was
