I often get questions about how I develop  fluency and and basically what we do like

to tell just a quick story as I usually do at the  beginning of this video uh I'm going to tell you

just a little bit about me learning Japanese  because this is a part of this example about  

juste un peu de mon apprentissage du japonais parce que c'est un une partie de cet exemple sur

how I get fluent and this is the same way I teach  Learners uh but I think the example should make  

comment je deviens fluide et c'est la même manière dont j'enseigne aux apprenants euh mais je pense que l'exemple devrait avoir

more sense and show you how you can become fluent  faster depending on how you learn uh so the basic  

plus de sens et vous montrer comment vous pouvez devenir fluide plus rapidement en fonction de la façon dont vous apprenez euh donc l'idée de base

idea uh I'll just tell you I'm going to write this  in English I'll use a little bit of Japanese as  

euh je vais juste vous dire que je vais écrire   ceci en anglais J'utiliserai un peu de japonais

well uh because most people probably won't know  Japanese watching this but uh you'll understand  

aussi euh parce que la plupart des gens ne connaîtront probablement pas le japonais en regardant ça mais euh vous comprendrez

a little bit of Japanese from seeing the example  so many years ago uh I've been in Japan for 20  

un peu le japonais en voyant l'exemple il y a tant d'années euh je suis au Japon depuis 20

years I think uh but many years ago I learned  the word uh I'm going to draw a picture of this  

ans je pense euh mais il y a de nombreuses années j'ai appris le mot euh je vais faire un dessin de ça

rather than try to give you a definition help  you understand this a little bit better uh if  

plutôt que d'essayer de vous donner une définition vous aider à comprendre un peu mieux euh si

I can draw a picture well of this thing here I'm  going to try to draw this well you can kind of

je peux bien dessiner une image de cette chose ici je vais  essayer de bien dessiner ça vous pouvez en quelque sorte

Imagine actually this is not going to  be a very very good a very good drawing  

Imaginez en fait ce ne va pas être un très très bon un très bon dessin

at all but we're going to have some water  coming out of this uh and you can imagine  

du tout mais nous allons avoir de l'eau sort de ça euh et vous pouvez imaginer

washing your hands under this thing uh  in English the English word for this is a

vous laver les mains sous cette chose euh en anglais le mot anglais pour ça est un

faucet if you don't know that already uh  so the it refers to this specific thing  

robinet si vous ne le savez pas déjà euh donc ça fait référence à cette chose spécifique

right here where the water is coming out and  I learned the Japanese word for this I'm going  

ici d'où l'eau sort et j'ai appris le mot japonais pour ça je vais

to write the Japanese word in English  just so you can read it uh but this is

écrire le mot japonais en anglais juste pour que vous puissiez le lire euh mais c'est

Ja jaguchi so I learned this word uh many years  ago but then something interesting happened maybe  

Ja jaguchi donc j'ai appris ce mot euh il y a de nombreuses années mais ensuite quelque chose d'intéressant s'est produit peut-être il

two or three days ago when I was at a uh it was  just a like a a hot spring bath and I saw a water  

y a deux ou trois jours quand j'étais à un euh c'était juste un comme un bain de source chaude et j'ai vu une

fountain so this kind of like a like a kind of old  style standing water fountain has a little a pedal  

fontaine à eau donc ce genre de fontaine à eau debout à l'ancienne a une petite [ __ ]

on the bottom so you can push a button uh and then  there is the little water uh like part that comes  

en bas pour que vous puissiez appuyer sur un bouton euh et puis il y a la petite partie d'eau euh comme ça qui

out here and shoots the water out that way like a  regular drinking fountain and there was a sign on  

sort ici et fait sortir l'eau de cette façon comme une fontaine à boire ordinaire et il y avait un panneau dessus

it uh that said like don't put your mouth on the  jaguchi but I like up up until this point uh I  

euh qui disait comme ne pas mettre sa bouche sur le jaguchi mais Jusqu'à présent, je ne

did not know the kanji character for jaguchi but  I learned it from this drinking F so I'm going  

connaissais pas le caractère kanji pour jaguchi, mais je l'ai appris en buvant. Je vais donc

to write it for you here uh just because this  it's kind of an interesting story and it shows

you how these connections work and how connections  are a big part of developing fluency uh not only  

vous montre comment ces connexions fonctionnent et comment les connexions jouent un rôle important dans le développement de la fluidité. Non seulement vous

being able to learn things in the language you're  learning so if you're learning English you want  

pouvez apprendre des choses dans la langue que vous apprenez, donc si vous apprenez l'anglais, vous voulez

to be learning English in English uh but uh like  I'm learning Japanese in Japanese and I'm able  

apprendre l'anglais en anglais, mais j'apprends le japonais en japonais et je peux

to learn it this way so I don't translate when I  speak and I'm able to develop fluency faster so  

l'apprendre de cette façon, donc je ne traduis pas quand je parle et je peux développer la fluidité plus rapidement.

I'm not going to write the whole sign down that I  saw but what I saw was really interesting so I'll

just give you uh just the the character uh here  for it so this is the uh character I saw this  

juste vous donner le caractère ici, donc c'est le caractère que j'ai vu

and when I saw that again I did not know like  I knew the word jaguchi uh but I did not know  

et quand j'ai revu ça, je ne connaissais pas le mot jaguchi, mais Je ne connaissais pas

the the like the Kani for it so this is the the  Chinese character uh that means the same thing  

le Kani pour ça, donc c'est le caractère chinois qui veut dire la même chose,

uh so I was like oh wow look at that isn't that  interesting like I bet that means jaguchi and  

alors j'étais comme oh wow, regarde ça, c'est pas si intéressant, comme je parie que ça veut dire jaguchi et

the character for this this is the character for  snake and this is the character for mouth isn't  

le caractère pour ça, c'est le caractère pour serpent et c'est le caractère pour bouche, ce n'est pas

that interesting so just like this it kind of  looks like you can imagine it's almost like a  

si intéressant, alors juste comme ça, on dirait que vous pouvez imaginer que c'est presque comme un

little snake uh like a little snake head some kind  of long neck uh and the water is coming out so the  

petit serpent, comme une petite tête de serpent, une sorte de long cou, et l'eau sort, donc de la

same way a snake might be like yes so Tom's got  it right there the same kanji character if you  

même manière qu'un serpent pourrait être comme oui, donc Tom l'a bien compris, le même caractère kanji si vous

can read it a little bit bit better jaguchi means  uh a faucet in Japanese and so I thought that was

really interesting because I did not know the Kani  for this word before I saw it there are many words

that I know that I I just don't know the kanji for  or maybe I do but I've never tried writing them or  

que je connais et dont je ne connais juste pas le kanji, ou peut-être que je le sais mais que je n'ai jamais essayé de les écrire. ou

looking them up and that happens a lot so we we  might learn a word and we have a maybe a just a  

les chercher et cela arrive souvent donc nous pouvons apprendre un mot et nous en avons peut-être une

narrow understanding of it like okay this thing  means jaguchi and that's just it's really one  

compréhension étroite comme ok cette chose signifie jaguchi et c'est juste que c'est vraiment une

connection that you're making even if you can  make that connection uh in uh in the language  

connexion que vous faites même si vous pouvez faire cette connexion euh dans euh dans la langue

but it's still just only one connection but now  I've got something even stronger I've got multiple  

mais ce n'est toujours qu'une seule connexion mais maintenant j'ai quelque chose d'encore plus fort J'ai plusieurs

connections that help me connect with this thing  and of course I've learned this this is one of the  

connexions qui m'aident à me connecter avec cette chose et bien sûr j'ai appris cela c'est l'un des

first Kani characters uh that the children learn  uh it's just again like a very simple character  

premiers caractères Kani euh que les enfants apprennent euh c'est juste encore comme un caractère très simple

like this a square basically uh from mouth or some  kind of hole or an entrance something like that so  

comme celui-ci un carré essentiellement euh de la bouche ou une sorte de trou ou une  entrée quelque chose comme ça alors

you can imagine oh look at that so someone had the  idea like that kind of looks like a snake mouth so  

vous pouvez imaginer oh regardez ça donc quelqu'un a  eu l' idée comme ça ressemble à une bouche de serpent alors

why don't we just call it like jaguchi in the same  way uh and so this is where okay now I feel even  

pourquoi ne pas simplement l'appeler comme jaguchi de la même manière euh et donc c'est là que ok maintenant je me sens encore

stronger that I understand the meaning of the word  and this is why I I'm able to to use something  

plus fort que je comprends la signification du mot et c'est pourquoi je suis capable d'utiliser quelque chose

fluently because I know it very well and the  the secret or the trick here is trying to build  

couramment parce que je le connais très bien et le secret ou l'astuce ici est d'essayer de créer

more connections with the vocabulary and being  able to do that in the language you're learning

okay hopefully that makes sense uh but again the  basic idea is like if you if you can have a thing

and then you can connect that to the English word  or you know whatever language you're learning so

I'm learning Japanese I've given you the English  like the way like Jah like J GCI over here that's  

japonais, je vous ai donné l'anglais comme Jah, comme J GCI ici, c'est comme ça que

how you would read that this one just by itself is  like just coochie I remember teaching a guy that  

vous le liriez, celui-ci tout seul est comme juste coochie. Je me souviens avoir enseigné ce mot à un gars

word and he thought that was really funny  uh I won't go into why that is but anyway  

et il a pensé que c'était vraiment drôle. Je n'entrerai pas dans les détails, mais de toute façon,

the point is uh so jagoi uh I I was able to  understand it and I just remembered the words  

le fait est que jagoi, j'ai pu le comprendre et je me suis juste souvenu des mots.

some words maybe I forget them uh immediately  after I learn them if I don't take some time and  

Certains mots, peut-être que je les oublie immédiatement après les avoir appris si je ne prends pas le temps de

try to play with the word or think about other  connections something that can really help me  

jouer avec le mot. ou penser à d'autres connexions quelque chose qui peut vraiment m'aider à

understand it and so for the Japanese example it's  often easy for me once I see how it's written I  

le comprendre et donc pour l'exemple japonais, c'est souvent facile pour moi une fois que je vois comment c'est écrit je

think oh okay that that makes sense I can see  it's like snake mouth like I I understand why  

pense oh ok ça a du sens je peux voir que c'est comme une bouche de serpent comme je comprends pourquoi

they would do that there's a little story here  that helps you understand and make connections  

ils feraient ça il y a une petite histoire ici qui vous aide à comprendre et à faire des liens

with the word so I but I also start thinking  like I wonder what other things uh like for  

avec le mot donc je mais je commence aussi à penser comme je me demande quelles autres choses euh comme par

example let's say we have uh in English uh you  have the kind of uh let I'm going to draw kind of

exemple disons que nous avons euh en anglais euh vous avez le genre de euh laissez je vais dessiner une sorte d'

watering thing for watering flowers like this  this is called a watering can watering can usually  

arrosoir pour arroser les fleurs comme ça ça s'appelle un arrosoir arrosoir généralement

they're often made of plastic now but years ago  they were usually metal and so we had the name

ils sont souvent en plastique maintenant mais il y a des années ils étaient généralement en métal et donc nous avions le nom

watering watering can and I was I was thinking  isn't that interesting like so if this means  

arrosoir arrosoir et je me disais n'est-ce pas intéressant comme donc si cela signifie

faucet if jaguchi means faucet like this is  a slightly different thing the shape here is  

robinet si jaguchi signifie robinet comme ça c'est une chose légèrement différente la forme ici est

different and also there's no control here so  there's a difference between like you know a  

différente et aussi il n'y a pas de contrôle ici donc il y a un différence entre comme vous savez un

faucet in English and this is the same in English  as it would be in in ja Japanese this is what I'm  

robinet en anglais et c'est la même chose en anglais que ce serait en japonais c'est ce que je

thinking so in English a faucet is something you  can control so we can turn the faucet on or turn  

pense donc en anglais un robinet est quelque chose que vous pouvez contrôler donc nous pouvons ouvrir le robinet ou

the faucet off it's like a you can imagine like  a little block inside the faucet so we open that

and the water comes through or we close that and  the water can't come out so that's what a faucet

is so the Japanese word jaguchi is referring  to this but it's a different word for this just

like it is in English because it's a slightly  different thing so watering can over here um  

comme en anglais parce que c'est une chose légèrement différente donc un arrosoir ici euh

like and this is a slightly different thing  here we could have a watering can like this  

comme et c'est une chose légèrement différente ici nous pourrions avoir un arrosoir comme ça

or we could have the uh just kind of one opening  on the end of a watering can like that uh and so  

ou nous pourrions avoir le euh juste une sorte d'ouverture au bout d'un arrosoir comme ça euh et donc

this here like we might call that like a sprinkler  head in English so sprinkler head and again just  

ceci ici comme nous pourrions appeler cela comme une tête d'arrosage en anglais donc tête d'arrosage et encore juste

like the head of something just like my head  here uh we have the head of the watering can  

comme la tête de quelque chose comme ma tête ici euh nous avons la tête de l'arrosoir comme ça

like that so this is a sprinkler head or  a shower head same thing so we're making  

donc c'est une tête d'arrosage ou une pomme de douche la même chose donc nous faisons

a bunch of different little sprays for the  water to come out uh but this one is a is  

un tas de petits jets différents pour que l' eau sorte euh mais celui-ci est

a different one this is just kind of like an open  watering can like we would just call this a spout

différent c'est juste une sorte d'arrosoir ouvert comme on appellerait ça un bec verseur

spout so this part here is spout just like if  you have a teapot same idea so we have our little

teapot here put the handle on this side coming  down like that so this part here is a spout so

this part is a spout uh in the same way you might  have a like a rain spout on the side of your house  

cette partie est un bec euh de la même manière vous pourriez avoir un bec de pluie sur le côté de votre maison

so the the water runs down off of a roof uh this  little kind of metal part here that sits under  

donc l'eau s'écoule d'un toit euh cette petite sorte de pièce métallique ici qui se trouve en dessous

this this is called The Gutter and then there's  typically a little rain spout like this a little  

ça s'appelle la gouttière et puis il y a généralement un petit bec de pluie comme ça un petit

pipe that brings the rain down and this is also  called a spout all right now you see I'm I'm kind  

tuyau qui fait tomber la pluie et ça s'appelle aussi un bec d'accord maintenant vous voyez je suis je suis un peu

of jumping around here uh but the the point is to  show that there are various connections that you

make and it's really the connections that help you  understand things in the language and also develop

fluency because you know the word really well all  right so the point is not just to know it like

I know a translation it's to understand the word  so well you understand it without a doubt okay so  

je connais une traduction, c'est de comprendre le mot si bien que vous le comprenez sans aucun doute, d'accord, alors

what's interesting about this so the Japanese  version of this like again it's a different  

ce qui est intéressant à ce sujet, donc la version japonaise de ceci comme encore une fois c'est une

thing like this is like uh what is that like a  a Hu huchi I'm going to write that in English I  

chose différente comme ça c'est comme euh qu'est-ce que c'est comme un a Hu huchi je vais écrire ça en anglais j'oublie

forget the kanji for that hu so it's hassu Gucci  in the same way and hu is a character for Lotus  

le kanji pour ça hu donc c'est hassu Gucci de la même manière et hu est un caractère pour Lotus

like the flower so when you know you can think  about someone coming up with the idea like in  

comme la fleur donc quand vous savez, vous pouvez penser à quelqu'un qui a eu l'idée comme en

English we might call that like a rose head also  in addition to a sprinkler head or a shower head  

anglais, nous pourrions appeler cela comme une tête de rose aussi en plus d'une tête d'arrosage ou d'une pomme de douche

but the Japanese it's thinking more it looks like  a lotus flower which I'm not going to try to draw

here very well but you can imagine the kind of  flower that comes out you know pretty big thing

and it's got flower petals that come out like that  so a Lotus head and so as I'm getting uh different

examples of these things okay jaguchi means a  faucet and we have like uh huchi is a kind of

shower head kind of thing and if we just have uh  this kind of spout here uh then would have uh this  

pomme de douche et si nous avons juste euh ce genre de bec ici euh alors nous aurions euh

is just like uh soogi GUI so so so so is to poor  so so so Gucci is to yes that's thank you H Ray  

c'est juste comme euh soogi GUI donc so so so est trop pauvre donc so so Gucci est à oui c'est merci H Ray

that's the character fora let me just write that  right quick I think [Music] uh how do I write that

I'm going to write that badly like that basically  it's kind of like that uh so anyway the character  

je vais écrire ça mal comme ça en gros c'est un peu comme ça euh donc de toute façon le caractère

for like it's like huchi or so SOI Gucci or hippie  like this like uh ja juchi and so you can see like  

pour comme c'est comme huchi ou alors SOI Gucci ou hippie comme ça comme euh ja juchi et donc vous pouvez voir comme

the character coochie is in the is in all three  of those and you think ah okay now I get it like  

le caractère coochie est dedans il y a dans les trois et tu penses ah ok maintenant je comprends comme

coochie must mean some kind of opening like this  so you see how all these things uh come together  

coochie doit vouloir dire une sorte d'ouverture comme ça donc tu vois comment toutes ces choses se rejoignent

and it's not typically the first example you hear  that really gets you the fluency in something  

et ce n'est généralement pas le premier exemple que tu entends qui te donne vraiment la fluidité dans quelque chose

because remember we we develop fluency over  time uh if I can erase a little bit of this

here fluency is the process of erasing doubt  over time so the first time you hear something

you probably don't understand it very well so  this is you can imagine like a little bit of  

tu ne le comprends probablement pas très bien donc c'est tu peux imaginer comme un petit peu de

understanding but most of this is it's still  doubt you're still unsure about how to use  

compréhension mais la plupart du temps c'est toujours du doute tu n'es toujours pas sûr de la façon d'utiliser

something or um or maybe the the pronunciation or  something you don't hear it very well but as you  

quelque chose ou euh ou peut-être la prononciation ou quelque chose tu ne l'entends pas très bien mais au fur et à mesure que tu en

learn more as you get more examples the doubt goes  away and you develop fluency automatically even  

apprends plus au fur et à mesure que tu obtiens plus d'exemples le doute disparaît et tu développes automatiquement la fluidité

before you speak okay so I'm here at the water  fountain uh for this example when I'm I'm just  

avant même de parler ok donc je suis là à la fontaine à eau euh pour cet exemple quand je suis je suis juste en train d'

like learning this in real life uh so I knew the  word jaguchi I saw that and I saw oh my goodness  

apprendre ça dans la vraie vie euh donc je savais le mot jaguchi J'ai vu ça et j'ai vu oh mon Dieu

like that's really interesting I had an aha moment  where I'm making the connection between uh this  

comme c'est vraiment intéressant J'ai eu un moment aha où je fais le lien entre ce

character here and the word I already knew so it's  helping me understand the word better I'm erasing  

caractère ici et le mot que je connaissais déjà donc ça m'aide à mieux comprendre le mot J'efface

more doubt and now I feel very confident about  using the word because now I actually understand  

plus de doute et maintenant je me sens très confiant pour utiliser le mot parce que maintenant je comprends réellement

what it means not like I just kind of remember the  sound or the word or a translation I understand  

ce que ça veut dire, pas comme si je me souvenais juste du son ou du mot ou d'une traduction Je comprends

what it means all right so without a doubt uh  again that's the whole point of De developing
