How To Understand English Like A Native Speaker

and welcome to another live video I was gone for  a little while because I lost my voice across my  

voice but uh it's coming back it's feeling pretty  good today so I thought I would do a live video

but we'll see if live is working let's see if  we're live on YouTube as well because I'm not  

getting chat like usual all right let me type  something in the chat see how we're doing I'm  

not in the chat already put something  in the chat anybody anybody out there

I think we're doing all right though again Chad is  not working on my phone all right all right it's  

working good to see people out there all right  hello everyone uh so I wanted to make this video  

today to talk about understanding English like a  native because understanding is the foundation of  

fluency and this is a just a very simple idea if  you don't really understand what you're talking  

about then you can't speak confidently about it  so usually what happens with Learners is they  

they understand quite a bit of English but they  actually don't feel very confident using that  

language themselves so it could be vocabulary or  grammar or whatever that thing is but they don't  

feel very confident using it and so like their  their confidence level about individual words  

and phrases and it will be different for each  word or phrase you might feel confident like  

you really know something you know it very well  so you feel confident about using it but other  

things maybe you do not so we're going to talk  about that in this video uh and yeah it's nice  

to see everybody back hello everybody lots of uh  lots of cats over there in the chat all right well  

hello again uh so let's talk about understanding  like a native uh I've talked about this in videos  

before where you basically have different levels  of understanding so if you imagine I'm an alien  

and I'm trying to communicate something to you  uh let's just write some some random alien uh  

language up here so this is not real English this  is not English this is not any language I'm just  

writing some language up here so let's say I say  to you uh let's see like hit the hip knee a foe

[Applause]

and I just say something like this to  you in an alien language and I'm just  

like like look hypnifosuga mintam and  I'm just like this like hypnifoca mean  

Tam and I'm probably not even going to  see it correctly because I just made it  

up right here but I'm trying to get your  attention and like hit me forgot mean tan  

you can probably get maybe the general idea I'm  trying to get your attention and I want you to  

look at something or to uh maybe you're I'm trying  to you know get your attention have you listen to  

something so you might understand the general  idea like you've probably seen you know movies  

or something where people go to some distant land  or they go to an alien planet and the aliens at  

first they can't communicate so they're saying  things they have to use gestures and try to get  

the the understanding so you might have a general  understanding like like hippie fols or hip hip

for sewer and I keep saying that and you  understand generally I want you to look  

at something but you don't really understand  what each of these things mean and how they  

are connected to each other all right so this is  just a very simple explanation or example of of  

how understanding works and why it's much easier  to develop understanding before you develop speech  

because you can just understand generally what  I mean but if I ask you to try to say this back  

to me or or tell me what this means and that  means you have no idea all right so there are  

different levels of understanding and usually what  happens is you will you'll learn a lot maybe you  

will watch movies or TV shows or something and you  will understand at this level and you'll know that  

you're understanding it at a higher level or a  more native or closer to Native level when you can  

understand what individual words mean and you can  understand how they are connected and you can take  

those words and and manipulate them so I can take  this word and put it here and can connect it with  

this one and actually communicate like a native  so I feel confident at that level not just at this  

level all right hopefully this makes sense let me  make sure chat is working over here so everybody  

nice to see everybody over there if you have any  questions feel free to put them in the chat and  

I will take a look at those as I'm going through  this this actually should be a pretty quick video  

but I just want to talk about understanding  and again the reason I'm talking about this is  

because I get lots of emails from people who say  they can't really so they understand quite a lot  

but they really have trouble saying longer more  interesting sentences and what that means is that  

they really lack confidence and understanding they  don't feel very confident about the individual  

words and phrases that they know so they can't  use them in their own conversations and that's  

why they speak with just maybe simple things or  say yes or no or something like that all right  

but I think everybody's following me so far  all right so let me tell you a quick story  

uh to illustrate what you should be doing because  typically what people are doing is they're trying  

to learn things through their native language  so let's say uh you have a word in English  

that you're trying to learn uh like at and so  you have maybe some translation or whatever  

in your native language so you're learning the  word at and then maybe you get an example from  

your native language and the interesting thing  about ad is there are quite a few uses of it  

um but the way natives are learning this is  different from the way Learners will learn  

this all right so if you're traditionally learning  this in a classroom with a translation or you're  

trying to get some repetition maybe that won't  really make so much sense and it's more difficult  

to understand what this means and another problem  with this way of learning is that you're kind of  

getting uh like one word and then maybe trying to  learn many different uses of it at the same time  

when natives don't learn that way so you didn't  learn your native language that way you would  

learn maybe one example one usage of something  and then maybe get a couple of examples of one  

particular usage of something all right all right  hopefully everybody's uh this makes sense over  

here but I'd like to tell you a story just to make  this a bit more clear I actually shared this with  

people uh maybe two days ago for people who are  following me on email so email subscribers of mine  

people who get courses so this was a story about  my younger daughter Noel so I had been practicing  

with her she is learning the language the same  way you are but I mean it the language way of  

learning is a little bit different especially  if you're learning it through the traditional  

way so what I do in my lessons is the same thing  I do with my kids and that's why I thought this  

would be a good example for you today so often  my younger daughter Noel she will say look

me so she means to say look at me look at  me all right and so I would practice that  

with her and just say no it's like look at  like look at me look at me and give her you  

know examples like her older sister I would  say hey look at this person or look at that  

person and her older her older sister  Arya can can say it just fine and she  

recognizes what the correct grammar is but  Noel was still having some trouble with that  

and so there are two ways you could try to solve  this problem uh one is actually I guess there are  

three ways so one is using a translation so I  could try to just like tell her what something  

is in a different language but obviously with  kids this is more difficult because they don't  

already know one language and why would you  try to use another language to teach them that  

so like my younger daughter well both of them are  bilingual so they speak Japanese and English but I  

don't want to teach them anything really if I can  through one language to teach them the other one  

I'd like to just help them understand the language  all in that language so they really understand  

what it means so I could uh I guess the the  first thing I could do is give her a translation

so give her a translation  or I could try to repeat it

so just a repetition give her giving her  that same thing again and again and that's  

what I try so at first I tried that just to  see if I could help or understand something  

and then I said you know uh it's much easier if  I can actually just help her understand it like  

a native by comparing this with something else  all right so she has look she should be saying  

look at me so I said okay we're going to try  to compare look at me let me erase some of this

so instead of Look At Me

we're going to have a look for me

so I would say okay look look at me and then I  would cover myself with the with the blanket or  

something and I would say now look for me can you  find me can you look for me and in this way she's  

getting to compare these two different words and  see how that changes the meaning of the sentence  

all right so we're not trying to study the word  by itself we're really trying to compare these two  

different things in this context all right this is  really important to understand this is how natives  

are learning they're not trying to look at the  word by itself just like this like okay here's  

the word at what does at me at doesn't really mean  anything by itself but when you can compare it to  

something else that's when you start understanding  it okay so again this is the way we're trying to  

understand something rather than the English  as a second language approach where you're  

trying to take a word like at and then this means  something in your native language like you have a  

translation of it all right so as we're doing  this I say look at me and I'm giving her more  

examples but I'm comparing these two different  things and she starts to get it she starts to  

figure out ah okay like looking at something  I'm I'm putting my attention I'm focusing on  

that she can't really explain it you know in a  logical way but she understands all right and so  

she knows look for me and she knows look at me  and so we can practice like look for something  

else or look at something else like I'm looking  at you I'm looking at the TV you are looking at  

me right now all right but maybe I hide somewhere  and you're looking for me where did I go can you  

find me all right so this is to learn English and  to understand English like a native speaker and  

this is what I do in all of my lessons and this is  what I do in these but I thought this was a good  

example of something you can do even by yourself  when you're learning so if there's a particular  

word or grammar point or something instead  of trying to get a translation of that thing  

try to look for something else where you can  compare it all right and this is again the way  

natives would be thinking about that because  if you ask them what a word means like the  

word doesn't really mean anything by itself  but it does mean something if you can compare  

it with something else okay so this is how you  can understand like a native speaker and once  

you understand this that's where the confidence  increases and then you can start speaking it  

fluently all right so if you if you don't really  understand something if I just say like look me  

look me like I understand what you're saying  she understands and I can understand her she  

says look me look at me but I'm trying to get her  to understand the the actual words so she feels  

confident about using them and now she can say  look at me and look for me all right so it wasn't  

about trying to trying to put a lot of pressure on  the word at by itself and just to repeat that over  

and over again what we want to do is compare these  two different things make it easier to understand  

like a native okay so understand this is all in  English rather than trying to use a translation  

where you're learning through a second language  okay all right let me take a look at chat see if  

anybody has any questions over here uh we should  be doing all right though let's see uh let's see  

that sentence is an alien language don't worry  about that much yet yes it's just an example  

of how you should be learning the language and  why is chat chat is still not working let's see

and let's see now why is chat not working it  should it really should be working on the phone  

it's really weird anyway all right all right let's  see if we have any let's see for me everything  

got boring before even get better English I  can't recommend good any English channels I  

have an angel from area let's see I don't know  if that's a beer if you're talking about like  

my Channel or other channels or what but let  me know if you find this boring let me know  

all right uh Joseph says uh from Darjeeling  Indian nice to see you there let's see hey  

Drew I haven't seen you for a while how's it  going bud well I mentioned at the beginning of  

this video I lost my voice for a while you can  hear it's it's coming back it's pretty strong  

but I still have a little bit of a cough  but I couldn't speak for a while so that  

was actually an interesting lesson for myself  as I'm I can't really communicate with people  

so I walk around and people say something to me  and I'm just like like it seems like I don't speak  

Japanese but I can't speak English either or at  least I could not uh while I was struggling with  

that but it was it was interesting and it also  proves that I was still uh improving my Japanese  

even while I'm not speaking because really the  goal again as I'm explaining in this video is that  

understanding is the key to fluency if you don't  feel confident about saying something it's because  

you don't really understand it very well so this  is one way to try to do that everything you should  

be doing is trying to understand the language  like a native because that's where you really  

understand ah now I understand how a native thinks  and what a native is is imagining or thinking when  

they're using some vocabulary whatever hopefully  this example makes a good illustration of that but  

Noel certainly feels more confident about that and  this is going for the understanding and then of  

course we continue with more naturally varied  review so that's helping her get like look at  

me look at that what did you look at yesterday or  were you looking for something so if I see you're  

looking for some books I say what are you looking  for what are you looking for and now she finds  

something oh what are you looking at what are you  looking at all right the goal is for you to think  

ah I get it all right you have that that flash  that that moment that aha moment the enlightenment  

I understand now and that's when you feel  confident in using something okay uh let's see uh  

uh okay oh I don't know if you're yes if you're  talking about this video or not remember that uh  

often for my videos I'm not really talking about  only one specific thing at a time uh even though  

I might have like there's a specific Focus for a  video like this one is talking about understanding  

but you'll notice it also has grammar and  pronunciation and vocabulary so these things  

are all connected together because this is how  natives are learning the language native speakers  

don't have a separate pronunciation lesson that's  not also vocabulary and grammar because they're  

learning all these things at the same time so  that's the same way you should be doing things  

as well all right a little teacher says Lewis uh  it's evening here in Chile and I'm ready to get  

this lesson glad to hear it yes again this lesson  it was actually pretty short how are we doing 16  

minutes look at that amazing and I might be able  to save my voice today uh so I'll save some time  

for being able to answer questions but let me know  if this makes sense okay I will recap this for the  

new people joining us basically there are really  two different ways of learning a language so you  

have the English has a first language approach and  this is something you can do as I'm demonstrating  

right now even if you are not a native all right  it just means you're learning it all in English  

and you're trying to understand everything in  English because when you can do this then you  

can speak fluently all right you don't become  fluent by learning something through your native  

language and then repeating it again and again if  you don't really understand that all right so if  

you're thinking about grammar points or What's  the vocabulary or is my pronunciation correct  

if you're worried about anything when you're  speaking it's because you don't really understand  

something all right remember there are levels of  understanding and I talked about that in another  

video that was like the three different levels of  understanding just like I gave at the beginning  

of this video where we have the alien example  if I just say and say something and I'm using  

gestures and trying to help you maybe understand  something you meet me on an alien planet and we  

can't communicate with each other so we have to do  something um but in this way I'm actually helping  

you understand something all in English and this  is the same way little native English-speaking  

kids are learning and now the other way is English  as a second language so this is where you're  

trying to learn through your native language and  this is what causes really all the problems okay  

so learning English as a first language rather  than learning English as a second language foreign

still still recovering let me  get my let me get a a swig of  

water that means to drink a little  bit a swig s-w-i-g-a swing of water

all right okay and uh that it says how can we  overcome so this should be how can we overcome  

not overcoming how can we overcome any fear about  speaking flow I can understand very well but I  

don't have confidence for that and stress coming  down when I just uh begin to talk yeah so that's  

actually what what we're talking about right  in this video and it's really actually the uh  

the topic of most of the videos because this  is the this is the major problem people have  

where they can understand something but  they still can't communicate and really  

I'm hoping this is this is giving you a  very clear and specific example of how  

this works so remember that like often often  native support English Learners will think

they will kind of think about the language as  one thing like I'm good at English or I'm bad  

at English all right they're they're kind of  thinking about it as one thing but really it's  

it's actually a whole bunch of different things  like each one of these is a different word or  

phrase or grammar point or something and you are  good at this thing but maybe not good at that one  

okay so you have individual skills or individual  words and phrases that you feel confident about  

and when you feel confident about it it's because  you understand that thing well this is why I tell  

people most of your learning should be spent  trying to understand something like a native  

because when you can understand like a native what  it really just means you understand it without  

having to think about the translations  or grammar rules or something like that  

so in this like I don't say anything I'm not  telling my daughter about hey let's let's look at  

these prepositions or these uh you know whatever  we're not talking about like a specific grammar  

point I'm just it's I'm basically making a  sound it's almost like I could erase these  

and you could think about it  the same way with a symbol  

so here's a square and here's a triangle  and it means the same thing so if I say look  

me and if I I know it's kind of hard to  communicate that but again it's the same  

basic idea of like when you see triangle we're  talking about looking at something and when we  

see a square we're talking about searching  for something but it's the same basic idea  

so I'm not trying to explain to her at like a  language learning or a linguistic or an academic  

level I'm just saying look I'm comparing two  different things all right so just like if I'm  

teaching you maybe you've seen my my Japanese  example where I've got like akka Akai Maka

all right so you look at these things it's like  oh look they're all markers but he said something  

different for these maybe that means the color  and that's what I mean so we got akka Akai Kudo  

kudoi Maka it's the same thing so when uh like  a Japanese parent is teaching their child that's  

what they're doing the child is understanding  like a native so without trying to think about  

lots of grammar rules uh and and the the kind  of linguistic stuff that that well especially  

where people talk about sentence formation uh  or like do we use like a grammar uh like this  

word and then that grammar point and then that  word and then something like that where you have  

diagramming sentences it's really difficult for a  lot of people to understand because it's is it's  

needlessly complicated all right so remember  again you're focusing on these things and you  

know uh let's see who was that that said that  uh I don't know I think the that's skipped up  

somewhere uh but you you know where you feel stuck  about something but remember these are not it's  

not about the language as a whole it's about  the individual word or phrase or grammar point  

or pronunciation or whatever but the point is to  learn it like a native rather than trying to learn  

it like a student in a classroom okay so that's  what will give you the confidence uh and let's see  

all right and I think uh yes hi sir I'm Moises  from Dubai thanks for your Aid and assistance  

really understanding is my major problem yes  and so again it's not your fault if you have  

this problem because uh you don't have this  problem in your native language so this is  

how people taught you English and now I'm trying  to correct that problem because most people again  

are teaching you English as a second language  rather than trying to help you learn English  

as a first language so what I do in programs  like fluent for life we go through all this and  

learn it all in English the same way a native  would do it yet lots of comparing of different  

things and you see ah okay I understand what that  means now because I compared some English with  

some other English rather than comparing some  English with something in your native language  

all right but that that's what actually gives  you the confidence to speak it's not because  

you you understand something at a low level  it's because you understand it the same way  

a native does all right and then you can  actually manipulate the sentence and you  

know okay look look at something now and now I can  understand the word at or the word for or whatever  

yeah uh uh let's see okay I think yes angel said  what happened to my voice I don't know I just I  

lost it on the the previous video you can hear my  voice getting worse over the video and so I I tend  

to talk for too long my voice was already hurting  but I did the video anyway and so I heard my voice  

more and then lost my voice for a couple of days  uh or maybe almost like like a week and a half  

I think and you can hear I'm still not 100 but I  was excited to make this video anyway all right uh

let's see every time when I'm hearing thou though  maybe I can't understand how to use it properly  

yeah and so often when people are learning uh  you can tell like if you if you hear like a  

really long sentence and you don't understand like  you might understand the whole thing but if you  

if you can't use that same information it means  there are some pieces of that sentence that you  

also don't understand and that's that's like the  uh like we might think about this I talked about  

this in in another video where it's like the uh  the weak chain link okay so if you imagine this  

is a sentence it's a whole bunch of words chained  together but if we have a weak chain link then  

this is where you're going to to break because  you don't understand this word or phrase and so  

it makes it more difficult to understand the whole  thing and it makes it even more difficult to use  

that thing yourself so if you don't feel confident  because you don't really understand something then  

of course you won't use it all right every time  okay I got that one well again sham nice to see  

you there I hadn't watched you live for a long  time and I find your live stream yes I'm back  

uh for the we'll we'll see how my voice is all  right how long uh take you to learn Japanese  

is Jose uh it took me let's see well there  there are two answers to this question the  

first one is when I came to Japan I spent about  a year trying to learn things this way so I was  

learning basically instead of ESL it was JSL so  learning Japanese as a second language and so  

learning it as a second language meaning I'm  learning it through English so I would have  

a textbook or a teacher or someone was trying  to to explain things to me and they would still  

use English to try to explain language so instead  of doing this they're giving me explanations and  

grammar rules and and trying to explain the the  like explain the language logically but I don't  

really understand it's not like an intuitive  thing I could understand this becomes way more  

intuitive it's like okay if I show you these  markers you can understand what that means so  

once I stopped doing that so I discovered hey I  should be learning English or learning Japanese  

in my case I should be learning it like a native  Japanese speaker so I went to a park near my home  

and I saw Japanese parents speaking with their  young kids and these are like two years old three  

years old really young uh young kid and those  kids were speaking better Japanese than I was  

and I felt really really stupid and I said wait  a minute I'm an adult I should be able to figure  

this out and I can sit and study by myself and  I've got motivation and some time to learn but  

I still couldn't do it and so I felt really stupid  and and the problem was that it was just me really  

learning the wrong way it was making it more  difficult for me to communicate so I said I'm  

going to start learning like this and so once I  start learning Japanese as a first language I'm  

really developing fluency very quickly so even  in like a few days I'm starting to understand  

vocabulary like a native and because I understand  it like a native I can use it fluently all right  

so again people think like how long did it take  you to get fluent it's not it's not like okay it  

took me two years to get fluent in the language  like I was getting fluent in individual words  

and phrases in a few minutes or a day or something  it would be pretty quick so remember that we have  

each of these individual things so I would be good  at one thing but not know what another thing and  

then I would learn something else and continue to  build on this so I've been learning Japanese now  

for like 20 years but uh the like the ability to  speak fluently came very quickly once I started  

learning this way all right but just remember that  you get fluent in individual words and phrases you  

don't get fluent in the whole language there's  even a lot of English that I don't know I just  

don't know the vocabulary lots of English like I  don't know probably 90 percent of the vocabulary  

I just don't know so I wouldn't feel confident  using it uh but for the everyday things that I  

talk about I can speak about English and you know  whatever talk about a lot of different topics and  

it's the same thing now for me in Japanese all  right so you can become fluent like what we do  

in fluent for life is instead of teaching you as  a second language we want to focus on something  

and get you fluent in a few things and then we  move you on to another lesson set and they can  

get you fluent in a few more things and really  help you understand like a native and as you do  

that that's where you start developing fluency so  the the quick answer to your question is that you  

really can become fluent in a few minutes in  that particular word or phrase so if I teach  

you a lesson like this like look at me versus  look for me so if I teach you this rather than  

giving you the same thing like comparing at  versus four through your native language I  

can get you fluent in this so you would feel  confident using it in five minutes in them and  

then you move on to the next thing and then you  get fluent in that okay so you get fluent word by  

word or phrase by phrase grammar Point by grammar  point foreign [Music] okay why are you coughing

uh uh let's see

and yes so again if I if anybody is still late  to the party over here I'm coughing a little bit  

because I lost my voice and I'm still it's still  not 100 you can hear it it's it's a little bit  

weak but I'm trying I'm here for you so I can  help you improve your English over here well  

let's see we got uh what was that uh knuckle  Bass song from Japan nice to see you there  

well done 100 good morning everyone oh and  see Margarita I can't help but be surprised  

how much we have in common about learning a  foreign language well everybody really should  

be learning uh whatever language it doesn't matter  what the language is You should be learning it in  

that language as a first language it's just most  people don't teach that way all right all right

yeah so again like I wasn't being very clear  like Kudo so I and it's it's going to be more  

difficult for you to hear that at first if you've  never heard Japanese or you're not used to hearing  

that and so like to to kind of mispronounce  it if I say it in English it's like a Kuro  

cool cool like k-u-r-o Kuro but that R sound  is not in Japanese and so if you try to learn  

that sound like this this sound here nope uh if  I try to learn that uh through English it's not  

going to sound perfectly but if I hear a bunch  of different Japanese people say I don't know

then I can understand how okay if if I  were to think about it in English it's  

like a combination of l d and r altogether  all right but I'm trying to learn in Japanese  

that's the point so I want to understand it in  Japanese rather than learning it through English

and so in that example like Kudo just means black  but crude oil becomes own we have an adjective now  

and we're going to attach that to a noun but  I don't want to explain it like that I don't  

tell my kids about look it's an adjective and a  noun and a verb in that I mean they'll learn that  

in school but it's not helpful for actually  learning the language it just makes it more  

confusing that's more trying to learn things  like a linguist and understand the structure of  

the language rather than just being able to use  it fluently foreign you wore my favorite shirt  

that was super awesome going to buy five or six  purple shirts yes I think because uh people like  

this shirt I will wear like five or six of these  at the same time have people it would look even  

better all right let's see uh let's see teacher  what's the difference between continuous tenses  

versus simple tenses I'm confused because in  many situations they are the same like I say  

I am saying she said she's the same same thing  right yes so in there will be times where and  

and this is another reason why you learn the  language like a native rather than trying to  

learn it through a second language and in the case  of like the simple verses The Continuous laughs

there are times where you can use the same thing  or different things and they mean the same thing  

so if I say like I say or I said  or I was saying listen we'll just  

we'll let's use the past just as an  example so I said where I was saying

in this example we can mean the same thing so  we're just talking about some time in the past  

uh the the kind of General way of thinking about  it like a native is like at this point I said  

something okay where if you if you ask a native  to really think about that they will they will  

not think about this consciously but this is in  in if you try to force someone hey what exactly  

do you mean by like I said something they mean  like at this point I said something okay like  

I was I was speaking I was saying something or I  was speaking so it's talking about a point versus  

I was saying something which is like you know  there's like a range of time okay but technically  

you I mean you never say anything at like a single  point in time there's always some length of time  

so it doesn't really matter they mean basically  the same thing they're slightly different and  

one is talking like I said something it's like a  point versus I was saying and we're talking more  

like a longer period of time but it's really  the same thing and so this is why as a when  

you're learning it like a native speaker you  will hear both of these things and they mean  

the same thing even though you could technically  look at it like a linguist is looking at it so  

this way of the confusion that comes is from  trying to understand it when you're learning  

it as a second language rather than getting some  examples of of natives or saying that and so you  

think to yourself ah I could say either of these  I can say yeah I said yesterday I said hello  

yesterday I was saying hello so it's  still it still took me like you know  

some amount of time to say that thing  all right hopefully that makes sense

uh uh let's see why are you dressed like  Tom Scott I don't know who Tom Scott is  

but uh I don't know t-shirt is pretty common I  guess everybody who is wearing a t-shirt maybe  

looks like Tom Scott whoever that is uh what  is the most common or popular English accent  

that people speak more it depends on where you're  living so I wouldn't worry about what a popular  

accent is it's just what is the the accent of  the people around you so if you live in Southern  

United States you're going to hear a Southern  accent and it could be there's like different  

accents within the South as well there's like  Southern like Mississippi or Louisiana or Texas  

or in the same thing in in different places or  different different countries so even in the  

United Kingdom you will have different lots of  different accents over there like Countryside or  

you know particular uh places and then they also  have specific words that they use so even in the  

same thing in Japan so we've got Nagasaki  dialect or like Tokyo or Osaka same thing

all right let's see here all right please take  care of yourself and your voice yes thank you uh

uh let's see we do not need uh two prepositions  and translate our native language it doesn't make  

sense at all we will have to use prepositions  of the situation yes the point is to understand  

it like a native that's it so when you think ah  now I got it that's where you're understanding  

something like a native rather than trying to  understand it logically like that all right yeah

yeah you would say Midori Midori no Midori no  uh Amando Fernandez how to understand English  

conversation when you don't have the lingo on that  topic it happened to me all the time can you not  

be uh you cannot be Savvy at everything yes that's  absolutely correct so what you can do is if you're  

if you're just in a situation like let's say you  go to the airport and then you have a conversation  

with someone else who is also at the airport just  sitting next to you and they start talking about  

something or you're listening to two other people  at the airport talk about something that you don't  

know anything about there will be plenty of times  where you have that situation and there's not much  

you can do about that in in that situation other  than just if if you were speaking with them then  

you can ask hey like what does that mean or can  you tell me more or like explain it simply for me  

and so me like if I'm talking with someone I  don't know about some scientific thing that I  

don't understand I will just say hey tell it to me  simply explain it to me simply so I can understand  

or imagine I'm a child I just say imagine  I'm a child explain it to me simply like that  

now what I train people to do in fluent for life  is to prepare you for different situations uh  

because yes there will be times where maybe  you don't know what people are talking about  

you can't quite understand it but you can  prepare for things and so the preparation  

comes again as you're understanding something  like this like you're looking at the difference  

between look at and look for and then you will  be prepared for that in any conversation that's  

using look at or look for all right so this  is why we prepare and the whole point is to  

to help you understand it like a native so you  can be prepared for conversations I'm not going  

to teach you the entire language because even  natives don't know the entire language and it's  

not necessary to know the entire language but you  should know like a lot of common things that are  

used frequently uh and again like something like  look at versus look for those are very commonly  

used and this is why you know my my daughters  will be learning those and hearing them a lot  

and so they will be prepared for that but of  course yes there will be times where you don't  

quite understand something but the preparation  you do before that so that when you are in a  

conversation you're ready for that all right so  this is what we do in fluent for life foreign

thanks a lot it helps a lot about learning  language when you said X like aka the Kudo is uh  

blue and black maybe because the only difference  between them so I can use the same rules for other  

languages yes so what I'm doing like the way I  teach people as a first language is what every  

parent does to teach their own children their  native language so I'm just giving that to adults  

it's actually pretty simple uh and the I think  the reason most people don't do it is they just  

well there's a couple of reasons I think why most  people don't teach this way uh but probably the  

biggest one is they think it's not possible  to teach a language without using the first  

language so that's why most people teach English  as a second language they just don't think it's  

possible to teach something in English but if  I can give a lesson like this like and this is  

it's not the most basic grammar it's pretty  basic but look at me versus look for me a child  

can understand that and if a child can understand  that in English then an adult can understand that  

too all right so my point is not to not to try to  give you a bunch of grammar rules but you should  

understand the grammar Naturally by comparing  different things foreign feel better please we  

missed you glad to hear it all right we can try  some warm green tea every time you make a live  

class yes I know I'm not at home right now and  I don't have uh I guess I could have bought some  

green tea but I just have some water my problem  is I forget to drink so now that you mentioned it  

now that you mentioned it that's a that's a good  expression right there now that you mention it

yeah but I'll probably not go that much longer I  do want to save my voice so we've gone about 40  

minutes so far see if we have any more questions  all right uh Jose says I think if you read a lot  

of books you can get the culture and so you get  more fluently is this correct yes so reading is  

a really great way to improve your fluency and to  improve your understanding and you can learn a lot  

and the point is you should be learning it like  if you can learn all in English and or you know  

whatever the language is you're trying to study  so I will read things in Japanese and every time  

I learn something new in Japanese I feel great  about that it's like ah look at that I discovered  

something new and I found that myself rather  than a teacher telling me what something means  

in a different language all right so the lessons  are more powerful that way if you can discover  

them yourself uh yesterday I ate some lemons  with dinner and now I got a little cough oh no  

Lewis says is it correct that these examples I  have worked here since 2016 I have been working  

here since 2006 have the same meaning I have  worked here yes it's the same thing again like  

this example over here there are often many ways  of of saying something so you can say I have been  

work I have been working here or I have worked  here both of those are fine in that situation yes  

thank you uh let's see cam says hello from  Thailand and hello angel again from Mexico City  

from India I like your eraser how does it  stick on the board yes everybody thinks my  

my Eraser is amazing like it's some alien  technology or something but the secret  

it's magnets it's just a magnetic uh eraser I  don't like the my problem with this eraser is  

uh that it should be like magnetic just right  on the board like that that way all you have  

to do is move it around but this one it's like  two motions so I have to take it off turn it  

and then erase all right so it's like extra  work but it is nice to have it up here rather  

than I suppose if it's just sitting on  the the ground there or on the little  

little tray but yes it's nice to have a  magnetic eraser that's the secret though  

uh let's see how many books I need to  be competent in spoken English uh says

how many books remember that I want to make it  clear that you get fluent so you like who who  

understands this better now maybe this is a pretty  simple thing so you all probably understood it  

pretty well like look at me versus look for me  but when you compare the two of them who feels  

better about that now than they were before  the video does anybody feel better about that  

I know it's a simple example I wanted to show  something that even a child could understand  

because this is the same thing I'm teaching my  children but hopefully you should feel better  

about it by comparing some English with some  other English rather than comparing English  

with something in your native language all right  now the reason I'm talking about this is because  

it's when people say like how many words do  you need to know to speak fluently or how many  

books do you need to read to speak fluently that  question doesn't really make any sense because  

you don't like this like you can imagine this is  one book or one lesson so either you understand  

this or you do not if you understand it  then you are now fluent in this thing and  

you can use it fluently look at that look at  that look for that I'm looking for something  

okay so you you don't get fluent just by like  reading more books you get fluent by understanding  

different things and when you understand them  like a native you use them fluently if you don't  

really understand something that's where you feel  nervous you have doubts about the language you  

don't know if you're using the right grammar  point or whatever the uh the the particular  

concern or worry is but that's what stops you  from being fluent so you could have someone who  

reads a hundred books a day if that's possible  so someone who reads 100 books a day but they  

don't really understand what they're reading  and they don't feel confident saying anything  

is that person getting fluent well probably not  so you could have someone who reads one book a day  

and then they really understand what's in that  book and each day their understanding improves  

and their their total fluency in the language is  building each time they learn something new okay  

so I mentioned before about having uh this like if  this is the whole language you don't get fluent in  

the whole language you get fluent in in pieces  of it over time but you get fluent much faster  

if you understand that thing like a native  rather than understanding it like a student  

uh see Anthony says I really like your methodology  of teaching English you have a gift now I I know  

people they're happy when they're learning  with me I'm happy to hear that but honestly  

I'm just doing what any parent does to their  kids it's really that simple and so because  

I have kids of my own I also bring some of those  lessons into into the learning but this is again  

what we do in fluent for life so the point  is not to go through like when when people  

join fluent for Life each person has their own  their own path because they're actually learning  

specific things that are interesting to them  so maybe you don't care about learning about  

I don't know pets or business specific things  but maybe you care about plants or whatever  

and so you learn about art or marketing or  whatever the the particular thing is you're  

interested in and you just focus on that until  you can understand it like a native all right  

and as you review things and hear them again and  again then you really feel confident and that's  

where you start using the language so you don't  need to know the whole language to to use these  

individual pieces but if if none of these pieces  are are fluent so if you're not fluent in in each  

word or phrase then you're not fluent in the  whole language and that's why you struggle okay

uh let's see an arrow coats if I wrote a Roku  Roku maybe a few years ago I thought I knew  

English and I realized I I was a joke and a liar  because even though I have improved a lot I still  

struggle and there is still so much room for  improvement yep so you don't like you should  

feel good about progress if you're if you're  learning more but remember that just spending  

time learning the language is not getting you  fluent all right you have to learn the right way  

so if you like the difference between this is is  like night and day so if you if you learn uh as  

a native then you get fluent much faster because  you learn something you understand it and then you  

move on to the next thing and then understand that  and then you just it it goes up the fluency goes  

up much much faster but you could spend many years  learning the traditional way and still struggle  

to speak all right and it's just because you  don't really understand the language as well as  

you think you do all right so there are different  levels of understanding uh and the the goal is to  

help you understand like a native because that's  where you feel confident about speaking uh only  

live with the language and learn just like kids do  what Muhammad Ali nice to see you there uh look at  

me look at me yep do you know about comprehensible  input method yes so when I when I explain to  

people what this is uh so uh comprehensible input  this is from uh Dr Stephen crashen and I'm a big  

fan of his and I'll I'll make this a little bit  more clear for foreign for people here who don't  

know what this is so that is a more Academic Way  of explaining it I just call it understandable  

messages like when I'm explaining something to my  kids if they don't understand something then they  

don't understand it you know then it's difficult  for me as a teacher to help them because I'm I'm  

not trying to teach them grammar rules I want  to help them understand the language and so  

uh comprehensible input well here let me let  me put it this way so English we have English

as a first language pardon my sloppy writing so  English as a first language and there are three  

pieces to this I call this the fluency triangle  but in just basic terms we have the first part of  

this which is the comprehensible input so it just  means lessons you can understand understandable  

lessons so something like this it's very easy to  compare ah I can understand what the person is  

saying all in English and that's the point so it's  not just about like getting a logical explanation  

of something there are often times where we might  be learning getting a second language example and  

you can understand what that means but it's not  it's like yeah I understand that logically but I  

still don't feel confident using it so that means  there's still something you don't understand that  

makes it makes you not feel comfortable  about that so again learning English as  

a first language when I'm teaching these are  the three things that I'm doing so the first  

one is that comprehensible input which I just call  understandable messages make this a bit more clear

hopefully you can read that understandable  messages so this means I'm teaching you something  

it's all in English and making sure you can  understand what I mean and by comparing something  

like this just like we're comparing a red marker  and a black marker and a blue marker your brain  

can understand that very easily without me giving  you an explanation it's just understandable okay  

that's the like the highest form of of a lesson  is when you're you can kind of discover that  

thing yourself because the teacher makes it  understandable this is why it's so important  

if you have a good teacher or if you have someone  that's like still doing things the traditional way  

where they're not really making it understandable  so the first part of this is understandable  

messages a second part of this is also making  sure that we're giving you native input so native

or sort of like the uh the real English

often what happens in an English class is you will  learn a lot of textbook English that isn't used in  

real conversations and you won't learn a lot of  things like slang and idioms and phrasal verbs  

and other things like that and so you have to  learn the actual language that natives are using  

but you have to learn it in an understandable way  okay and then the final thing let's see who's been  

following my lessons for a long time can probably  tell me what the third thing the third piece of  

the system and again this is what natives are  doing with their own kids I've just like broken  

it down as a thing so uh crashing talks about  understandable messages but I basically filled  

out like the rest of this system as as one  thing but what's the last thing I'll leave  

that as a quiz as I check some more comments  over here and I'll finish that in a second

or add whole bunch of comments come in all right  uh let's see I'm from Somalia language is your  

mindset I love it we'll definitely dive deep  into it glad to hear it uh hi says ammonish I  

love the notion of learning English like a  native speaker but do but you have English  

in school what did Native English speakers  learn in the English classes no grammar well  

if you're talking about like little kids going  to like learning the English language yeah they  

basically learn the names for the things that  they already know so kids are typically fluent  

already and then they learn to write and read  after that so kids learn to read after they've  

already understood the language so it's it's  a different kind of different kind of lesson  

but learning like English in a university is  different than learning English as an elementary  

school kid where you're learning like where do  we put a comma in a sentence something like that  

so that's a slightly different thing uh so I  mean it says that's true speaking about some  

topics I feel more confident instead of speaking  about other stuff yeah and it's because you you  

know that thing well and it's the same thing in  your native language so if I have to talk about  

I don't know Pokemon like some kid walks up to me  he's like hey let's talk about Pokemon characters  

and I I don't know anything about Pokemon I can't  talk about that so I can listen to you you can  

explain that to me but I I don't feel comfortable  talking about that because I don't know anything  

about him I can answer or I guess I can ask some  questions but I don't know much about it so even  

in your native language the N says we missed you  where did you go I lost my voice and you can hear  

me now it's kind of I'm losing it again all right  all grammar rules get broken when I think from the  

side of situation yes occasionally we do break  grammar rules and natives will break grammar  

rules or pronunciation rules things like that so  again it's important too get native English this  

means native examples where you get actual native  speakers are speaking you so you notice again in  

like fluent for life is built around these same  things so we need to teach you understandable  

lessons like the the you should be able to  understand the lesson in English rather than  

me trying to teach you you know through Japanese  or Chinese or Thai or whatever but I'm also I have  

to teach you the native the native English the  real spoken English that natives are using oh

uh all right Diego says does you  or you could say do you do you live  

uh or does you or are you talking about my lives  so I happen always on Sunday uh lately I've been  

doing them yes so it'd be it's Monday morning  my time in Japan and Thursday morning my time  

in Japan I've been doing that recently but the  last two weeks I did not because of my voice  

uh let's see in linked example I did some work a  couple of days ago but now I'm posting it on the  

information Hub and mailing my boss which time do  I have to use I posted the or I have posted the  

I did some work and now I'm posting it on it it  depends on what what time you're talking about the  

individual actions so if you have in that example  you're talking about like something you did in the  

past so right now you're talking so this is  now and if you say I did something here and  

now I am doing this with with that information  so I wrote a letter and now I am putting it in  

the mailbox so you're talking about actually  two different actions at two different times  

okay but we can talk about like now I have  posted like I have put the letter in the  

mailbox if you just did that okay so that  happened like a second ago or a minute ago

hello Drew I'm Denise from Brazil  I understand everything you say am  

I a good learner level uh remember  Denise and everybody else listening  

that you have different skills uh let  me just give an example of this here

so I talk about your English fluency  profile your English fluency profile

say one two three four five six seven yeah so  they're basically different skills that you  

have I've covered this in other videos so I won't  explain it in a lot of detail but what happens is  

you are good at some things like let's say you're  listening is all the way up here so this is zero  

and this is like 100 but your vocabulary is maybe  down here and your confidence is down here your  

confidence level whatever the weakest skill you  have that's actually what determines your ability  

to speak and this is why you can know a lot of  English but still struggle to speak okay so your  

your level of confidence lets you communicate  all right and then the goal is to improve your  

confidence which improves your overall fluency so  it doesn't matter if you can if you can understand  

that's great I mean the English I'm using in  these videos is often pretty easy I'm not using  

a lot of slang or idioms or movie quotes or other  things like that that I would use in a regular  

conversation those are the things it takes a  little bit of time to teach you and make sure  

you understand what's happening but that's what  we do in fluent for life so most of these videos  

it's fairly easy English to help you understand  things like a lot of the principles I teach like  

learning English as a first language rather than  learning it through your second language foreign

Felix says when I started English  it was so fast learning probably  

because I was loving it but uh  after some months on everything  

started to feel different I stopped  studying like I was doing before

um okay and Diego says hello Drew my name is  a Diego or my name is Diego maybe it was the  

way how I was doing it yeah Felix I don't quite  understand your question if you were saying it  

was easier or you were making more progress before  but you're making less progress now let me know  

my English is a stassi or Stacy uh quite  Advanced however I hesitate when speaking to  

native speakers sometimes I'm at a loss for words  can your method help me enhance my English skills  

what should I focus on yes and so uh you have  to think about what exactly the issue is when  

you're in a conversation and you lose your words  or you forget or whatever now some people maybe  

their English level is actually really good  but they just feel very nervous that happens  

and that's not really like a language learning  problem that's more of just a psychology problem  

um but many people they actually just don't feel  so confident about what they're saying and that's  

because they have doubts about their vocabulary or  their grammar or pronunciation or something like  

that and these are the doubts that stop them from  expressing themselves and so when you have doubts  

it it kind of scrambles your brain and  like you're I can't remember what I want  

to say and I have trouble expressing  myself so those are the things the  

issues that people have so I don't know what  specific issues you're having but typically  

it's what I talked about in this video where  this is really about people not understanding  

English well enough because if you speak with  like whatever your native language is maybe  

it's Chinese or whatever so if you speak Chinese  or whatever your native language is if you speak  

that well with other people you don't have  any nervousness about that then it's probably  

a specific language learning issue rather than  just a confidence issue about you know like your  

worried about whatever but most times it's it's  a language learning issue but yes uh learning  

English as a first language that solves all of  those problems because it helps you understand  

the language you feel confident so you speak all  right so when I'm when I'm speaking Japanese I'm  

not in a conversation like ah I've forgot my  words or whatever like my pronunciation is fine  

and I can communicate well and it doesn't matter  who I'm speaking with I can usually find a way  

to express myself and understand what the other  person is saying so I have a lot of confidence  

in conversations but that is because I learned  a Japanese as a first language okay not like so  

I stopped learning Japanese through English  and started learning it as a first language

hello Drew uh okay I answered that one  already work smart not hard that's key  

it's a subconscious learn language word by word  naturally varied review Mikhail got it naturally

all right so naturally varied review is the third  make sure that fits over there yes so this is the  

the third piece of the fluency triangle and  you notice that you need all three of these  

things in order to communicate to become a fluent  speaker so if I never teach you native English  

then it doesn't matter if I make my language  understandable right now I'm making my language  

understandable but I'm not teaching you like  the real English that you find in an English  

conversation yes a lot of this English is used  but I'm not teaching you slang and other things  

like that that are also used all right so I'm  missing part of that vocabulary but native  

naturally varied review is essential because this  is the practice you get that builds your memory  

and your confidence so I could teach you something  it's like the like the Japanese lesson if I give  

you like a kudo akka I could teach you those and  then you would understand it like I understand  

what that means but tomorrow you would probably  forget the lesson all right so just like little  

kids understanding is just the first part of that  like to really make it become a part of you what  

I call the ownership level of understanding that  requires a naturally varied review so part of that  

is is just like it's helping you uh get something  it's it's not really repetition because we want to  

keep it interesting for your mind so that's  why we give you varied review so today it's  

like look at me but tomorrow it's look at this  or what what are you looking at so I'm giving  

you a range of different examples to help you  really understand that that builds your memory  

your motivation your confidence and your fluency  so you start using things all right so when you  

really remember something well it's it's like some  things maybe you just understand it right away and  

you build fluency it's almost instant all right  but most times we need some kind of naturally  

varied review especially for longer uh words and  phrases but very good Mikhail all right uh yeah I  

know of Pikachu yes Pikachu is uh pretty common  I think learn English is 90 subconscious well  

it's uh I don't know I don't know if it's like I  wouldn't say it's subconscious it's just more like  

it's it's it's logical to understand uh  if if the teacher makes it understandable  

in English so it's possible to do that and  that's the fastest way to learn because this  

way uh you're going to have doubts and anything  that gives you doubts is causing you to to take  

longer to get fluent in the language but it's  not really a subconscious thing it's just more  

of like oh like I understand that and I could  even explain how that works it's like look look  

at I'm looking at something but now I'm looking  for something like I don't know where I don't  

know where it is I'm looking for something ah  no I found it now I'm looking at that thing  

okay so even a child can understand this and then  with the naturally varied review this is where we  

continue to give more examples and then you feel  very confident about that so it's very simple but  

this is why you need all three of these things  and I think when when crashing is talking about  

this I've never spoken with crashing but I would  I would imagine he would he would probably think  

about these things as as like yes that's kind of  part of part of what he means by comprehensible  

input so it's it's a continuous thing so when  he talks about uh like if he could you know  

continue to teach you every day and give you more  understandable messages every day which is what I  

do in fluent for life that's how you get fluent so  he's a linguist uh and he's more teaching teachers  

about how to teach but I'm actually producing  lessons for people who want to learn foreign

it's the first time I've ever seen you live  the one thing is certain to learn the languages  

natives do they don't kill themselves with  grammar yes so it's important to understand uh  

that people are learning grammar it's just look  at the difference in this so this is learning  

grammar it's a grammar lesson but it's not  it's not teaching you grammar rules so the  

point is to help you understand the grammar to  know the grammar without giving you a bunch of  

that it's like when you're watching a movie  and like if you see a character that's angry  

you know the character is angry like I'm like  like the the you can see the person and you can  

tell they're angry you understand their emotion  or you could have a character say like I'm feeling  

very angry right now they're like explaining  it to you but you don't feel the the anger  

you know it's the same same kind of thing  so the point is to help you understand it  

to make it clear rather than give you  an explanation about it you should feel  

it you should understand that you should get  that Ah that's what understanding means okay  

uh let's see antimony says I don't feel lost  when you're talking you should try to expand  

your vocabulary yes so I I have a wide range of  people who watch these YouTube videos so some  

people have a higher level of understanding and  I will use some uh some things like higher level  

things but typically I save that for fluent for  life because I can actually take people through  

the steps to help them understand that vocabulary  but you will hear me sometimes and you can even  

if you go on the the on our YouTube channel  look for the conversations I've had so some  

fluent for life videos are available and you  can watch those especially the conversations  

Louis says everything is clear teacher it's  always a pleasure to pay attention to what  

you explained to us I'm learning more phrasal  verbs and let me tell you it takes time and I  

guess I've been doing well glad to hear it yeah  uh so phrasal verbs also like it's another thing  

that you learn so part of fluent for life has the  visual guide to phrasal verbs and I show you the  

same kind of thing where it's kind of Look At Me  versus look for me but we're comparing different  

phrasal verbs and you can see them visually so  like take off the cap so I can take off the cap  

I can take off a shirt same thing and so when you  understand that visually you see it like a native  

then you can learn more difficult uses of those  same phrasal verbs uh you're easier to understand  

that 99 of native speakers yes so the point the  point for for me in these videos on YouTube is  

to be understandable and in fluent for Life uh  we have to go from my level of speaking to the  

native level that's why we give you lots of native  speakers to listen to so you could listen to like  

I don't know over a hundred I think different  Native English speakers so different accents  

different pronunciation uh different countries and  uh and yeah so everybody is even using different  

vocabulary when they're speaking so you have  to get exposure to those different things and  

that's another example of naturally varied review  so if you only listen to one teacher you're not  

going to be prepared for all the English that  you hear in in real life so you have to have a  

program or you have to have lessons that give  you exposure to lots of different people okay  

foreign uh Andre says thank you so much glad to  hear it uh Armando says can someone be a good  

speaker without being a good listener uh I think  in a in kind of a logical way like you could speak  

very well but not listen to what other people are  saying but it's it's basically impossible to have  

like better speech ability than understanding  ability because you like you can't shut your ears  

off you're always improving in your understanding  develops faster than your speech ability so I I  

it would it would be interesting I don't know  what that would look like other than just like  

a mean person who is trying not to listen to  what other people are saying as they speak

don't lose your voice yes says again sometimes  I'm I feel blank but even in my native language  

is the same so I don't think that would be a  language learning problem yes again that's a  

good way to compare do you have a problem in  your native language and do you have that same  

problem in English so if you have the problem  in both languages then yes it might not be a  

specific language learning issue hello from  Geneva this is Elena nice to see you there  

confidence is key that will make you speak the  language automatically and build fluency yes and  

so when we talk about confidence like it's a real  thing that develops through your understanding  

and so that's why you can become a more confident  speaker without speaking you don't need a speaking  

partner to understand the language better so you  can become a much more fluent speaker by yourself  

the goal is not to just repeat things or try to  find people to practice with the practice comes  

from the understanding and that really is from  these things here all right so you notice like  

speaking practice is not one of the things in  the fluency triangle it's just making sure you  

learn real English making sure you understand  that and making sure you review that again and  

again in different ways so you understand it  and then you remember it and use it fluently
