Will You Get Fluent In English? Here’s The #1 Predictor Of Fluency

all right I think we're live let me know in the  chat if you're here hi there I am Drew Badger  

the founder of englishanyone.com and the English  fluency guide and today we're going to talk about  

the number one predictor of fluency should be an  interesting video uh we'll actually try to keep it  

pretty short it's not that complicated of an idea  but I will stay around and answer questions if  

people have them let me know in the chat if this  is working I think we should be okay all right  

so as I mentioned we're talking about the number  one predictor of fluency so when I first started  

teaching uh 20 years ago I've now been teaching  for 20 years crazy when I began teaching 20 years  

ago and I was also a learner and not a very good  learner of languages because I had already failed  

to learn uh at least like three different ones and  I was failing to learn Japanese at the time when I  

started teaching uh and so I thought a lot about  why some people get fluent and why some people  

do not you know this is a a common thing after  I had failed enough times I'd seen many people  

who became fluent and many people who did not and  you know they they ranged from all kinds of things  

some people who were living in the country where  they were learning and they still didn't become  

fluent other people who studied really hard they  spent a lot of time trying to learn and remember  

things and they still couldn't speak and then  other people that didn't seem to study very  

much but they became fluent quite quickly and so  it really kind of surprised and frustrated me and  

I wanted to know the answer to that question so  when I was first teaching I assumed it was well  

if you live in the country where you're learning  you become fluent but when I came to Japan and I  

still couldn't speak even after about a year of  trying to learn I realized that wasn't the case  

so you some people who do live in Japan become  fluent and some people who do live in Japan do  

not become fluent and the same thing with English  Learners living in the United States or Canada or  

Australia the UK wherever all right so it wasn't  about me living in a country or anyone else it  

wasn't even about the amount of confidence people  had and it certainly wasn't about like again how  

much time you spend studying the language and even  the most surprising thing for me was learning that  

it doesn't matter how much you try to speak if  you don't really understand the language so I know  

lots of people they continue to try to practice  speaking they're always looking for speaking  

Partners they want want to form more groups in you  know YouTube or Facebook or whatever they want to  

find more people to practice speaking but lots of  people have been speaking for a long time and they  

still don't feel confident about what they say  so they don't feel confident about using their  

words so over time as I began teaching excuse me  and still thinking about what's the best way for  

me as a learner to get to get fluent and also  to help all the students I've had and now that  

I've been teaching for 20 years I thought I would  be able to share what I've learned so what I've  

seen about which students become fluent and which  students do not and so we'll be talking about that  

a little bit in this video well let me just check  chat right quick all right nice to see people  

over here let's see is something being confident  and learning a lot of vocabulary in your classes  

actually it's it's not about that um my classes  are certainly helpful for that but it's not  

even about learning a lot of vocabulary uh it's  psychology it's a psychological actually uh that I  

found uh but this is an interesting thing because  having been teaching for so many years uh and  

and having seen thousands of students like some  people I began helping years ago and they're still  

learning with me others or you know they're fluent  some people you know they've been like continuing  

to learn but they're not becoming fluent and I'm  so I'm always curious like why does that happen so  

it's not necessarily about like getting you know  specific lessons or something like that which is  

really surprising all right so you helped me a  lot it says success steps glad to hear it well I'm  

always happy to help uh help other people become  successful let's see see anybody else you speak  

so clear I understand all thank you uh thanks  teacher says Daniel well yes I'm trying to be  

understandable so you can follow what I say this  is different than the way natives normally speak  

in movies and everyday conversations even  the way I speak normally with friends and  

family uh it's different than how I would  communicate uh right now in a lesson like this  

but yeah it's nice to see everybody there  all right Chad is Chad is Flowing nicely

you were watching later after we finished but  right now uh it is live that's true so first time  

watching uh you are helping me a lot to improve  my classes each video is like a whole full course  

glad to hear it I'm glad you're enjoying that your  videos are so helpful I will be full as a teacher  

Drew glad to hear it so how can I uh how can  you say that you're fluent in a certain language  

all right we'll come to that question  we'll put a pin in that this is a  

really great uh Native point or native  expression you can use two put a pin  

in that or to put a pin in something this is  one way of expressing that you will come back  

to something later so imagine like you've got you  capture like a little butterfly or something like  

that you've probably seen these in a museum or  whatever people take a pin like this and kind  

of stick it into you know something like that this  is one way to remember the expression uh but often  

you will see these displayed with a pin in them to  keep them where they are so we will put a pin like  

this if I stick a pin I know it's kind of a sad  analogy I guess but you've probably seen something  

like this but to put a pin in it so uh Duran's  question I want to make let me make a note of  

that so how can you say that you are fluent in a  certain language good question so how do you know

or how can you say that you  are fluent you are fluent  

all right I'm writing this especially badly  because it's just for my benefit to remember it  

later all right but first let me tell you a quick  story uh this is one of the stories I share I've  

shared it I don't know a few times on the channel  but I think it's really instructive because it it  

gives you the answer to this problem so many  years ago I was going to Alaska with a friend  

of mine and it was his dream his goal he wanted  to go to Alaska and work on a fishing boat and  

so he got there and we we actually went there and  we met in Alaska in Anchorage and we took a boat  

down to this island called Kodiak and his job  or what he what he thought he would do is walk  

around the docks and ask different fishermen if  they were looking for help so this is typically  

what people do so you go there if you don't know  anyone you just walk around asking people if they  

need help for their boat if they do you can  get a job but me I just wanted to see Alaska  

and uh I was actually really scared about going  there because I had spent the last money I had  

getting to Alaska I didn't have like anything  I suppose I could ask my parents or something  

for money but I really didn't have much uh and  so I just bought a one-way ticket to Alaska and  

in my mind the only thing I was thinking about is  how can I see Alaska and if possible like how can  

I get paid to do that but I didn't want to work  on a fishing boat so again he wanted to work on  

a fishing boat and I did not I didn't really care  about that but I wanted some way to see Alaska and  

travel around and and that was just the idea in  my head and so what was interesting is that while  

we were on this island so we were on an island  called Kodiak you can look on a map I think it's  

like the largest island I think it might be the  largest island in the United States I think Kodiak

so on like you'll see Alaska looks like  this there's like a kind of tail that  

goes down like it's with some other Islands  on it and Kodiak is one of these down here  

and so while I was on the island with my friend we  were hitchhiking so we would stick out our thumb  

because we didn't have a car we would just get  around on the island that way and we would hold  

out a thumb and some people would pick us up and  we would get a ride people were very friendly on  

the island so we stayed if I can draw like a very  simple map here so the like the boats are all down  

here on the water and we were kind of up here a  little bit at a like a camping ground and so we  

would we would either walk down this road or we  would get get a ride from people and one day we  

got a ride from someone who was just happy to take  us back and he asked us some questions and he said  

can you cook you know can you clean and we were  like oh maybe this guy is asking us if we can you  

know work on a boat or something like that and  so his boat what he does is called a tendering  

and tendering is where you actually you go out  and you get you get fish from like the little  

fisherman so the little boats where the fishermen  are they catch the fish and give them to you and  

you bring them back and forth like that so it's  pretty simple job but I had no idea that this was  

something that even existed I was only focusing  on the goal of how can I explore Alaska so I  

wasn't thinking specifically about like being  on a boat I didn't even really care about that  

I had no idea I was going to be on a boat to  do something I was only focusing on the goal  

itself all right now the reason I'm telling  this story uh is because I I discovered that  

really the exact same thing occurs with fluency  so what most people are doing when they think  

about a goal like achieving something like fluency  they're actually thinking about two things at the  

same time I will try to be very simple with this  explanation so it's not confusing but hopefully  

people are following this because I found it  very valuable for my own life but also again  

the people who become fluent understand this idea  even if they're not thinking about it consciously  

so if I take something simple like  I want to go to America all right  

so let's say I'm in Japan over here  and I want to get to let me draw this  

map is a little bit different so if I want to  come I'm in Japan over here just draw Japan  

and I want to get to America over here so if the  goal is only so the goal is like get to America

but usually what people do  is they'll say like I want to

I want to like take it take a plane

so they want to take a plane and get to America  these are actually two different ideas but people  

think about them as one thing so I want to take a  plane and get to America all right it's a simple  

idea but there might be let's say there's an even  faster way to get there like some new technology  

where you could teleport so rather than I want to  like focus on uh like getting to America by taking  

a plane which might take 11 hours or something  I want to take a like a teleporter if I could  

use that and then wow I'm just immediately in  the United States so I certainly could I could  

take a plane and get over here that way but  it's obviously faster if my goal is just to  

get to America to do the teleportation all  right now to make sure this isn't like too  

crazy of an idea how this applies to fluency is  this most people we look at the same kind of idea  

they have this this kind of same  connection between what they want  

to do or how it will happen and  then the goal of fluency itself

so I must speak

to reach fluency all right so people  will have lots of different ideas  

about how this works so the the  goal is fluency but people have  

a very specific idea about how  that will work so I must learn

let's say let's learn through translations

so I must learn through translations to get  to fluency all right they're still thinking  

about this as one idea which whichever these these  things it is so each person usually has like some  

different kind of method about what that is what  they believe will get them to fluency so I must  

speak I must live in an English-speaking country  to get fluent all right they're thinking about  

this as one thing but only half of this is really  the goal this is just a method that you believe  

will get you fluent so here's what I discovered  uh after you know working with people for 20 years  

and really even longer than that just back in  the United States when I would be trying to learn  

languages and and other things like this but this  is really what I discovered uh as I was helping  

people but what I've found is that the people  who get stuck on a particular method like this  

are typically the people who do not get fluent the  people who get stuck on a particular method like  

this and they really believe that that's like  the thing that will get them fluent uh and and  

again it's not like the method is bad it's just  that they're they're connecting these as one idea  

so that they think like I must speak to get fluent  all right really the the only thing they should  

be focusing on is the fluency itself and not  worrying about like a specific thing that maybe  

they were told to do or they you know they've been  doing it a long time like I must study grammar  

to get fluent let me check the chat because I  want to make sure uh this idea makes sense but  

the the basic idea is that what people think  is one thing I must speak to get fluent like  

they're they're thinking like like I want to speak  to get fluent that's their goal the goal is really  

it's just fluency and it shouldn't matter how you  get there as long as you get there all right but  

the people like when I'm talking with people it  could be just you know emails or comments or even  

speaking with people in person I'll often ask them  like what do you want and they'll say like oh I  

want to get fluent and they they just assume like  well I have to speak to do that or I have to learn  

through translations or uh something else pick  the chat though all right I'd like to make a trip  

like that someday let's see haha you have to be  fluent first well you don't have to be fluent to  

go to the United States there are lots of people  who live in the United States and can't speak  

fluently lots of them actually uh your work with  your friend as a volunteer no uh so this was us  

going to Alaska and he wanted to work on a fishing  boat I did not I just wanted to see Alaska but for  

him he actually was you know it could be I never  actually I never asked him if he just assumed he  

needed to work on a fishing boat to do that so  if he assumed like he was like I must work on a  

fishing boat to see Alaska but me I was I was only  I wasn't really thinking about it I think in my  

case the interesting thing is that like I had no  idea about how you do that and there's a a certain  

yeah like your mind becomes much more open when  you don't already have an idea about what to do  

so I was thinking I want to I want to go to Alaska  and just see Alaska and if I could like get paid  

to see Alaska and if I tell people that like if  I go to the Alaskan like a tourist I don't know  

a tourist place and I say hey how can I get paid  to see Alaska like they might tell me to get a  

job doing something but they would probably think  it's funny like like usually you pay to see Alaska  

you don't get paid to do that you paid to do that  like maybe you paid to take a cruise or something  

uh so in my case like I had no idea but I did not  want to like work on a fishing boat I thought that  

would be like I don't know just I'm like spending  all my time working I'm not really seeing Alaska  

uh and I just didn't want to do that so we  weren't trying to volunteer but it was just  

interesting that by focusing on the goal itself  and not thinking about like a specific way I had  

to do that the way it became available to me so  I was open to to to seeing things in a different  

way and so often when I'm talking with people  about how they get fluent uh almost everyone who  

has maybe they've been learning for a long time  they have a specific thing that they think they  

must do and they have been doing that so a person  maybe they think they have to speak so they try  

to speak with other people but they're still not  fluent and so they're wondering like maybe I'm not  

doing it enough or they think I must like learn  through translations or I'm not uh like I'm not  

spending enough time studying the language all  right again these are beliefs that people have  

that are actually disconnected from fluency itself  so fluency is the goal and there actually are like  

many different ways you could do this just like  there are many ways I could get from Japan to  

the United States so I could swim it's possible I  could swim maybe from Japan to the United States  

if I had enough energy and a lot of time and  I don't get eaten by a shark or something so  

it's a way to do it it would take a really long  time to swim to the United States probably not  

very good idea and again the fastest thing we have  now is an airplane maybe we have teleports like a  

teleportation thing in the future but again it's  the same kind of thing so people think they must  

speak to get fluent but if they are speaking and  they are not fluent then maybe they should think  

about this and and think maybe maybe this is not  correct maybe I'm not doing something correct  

about that rather than I need to do more of it all  right let's see uh I will keep going through here

understandable yes because I'm still communicating  clearly and I'm not using a lot of uh like idioms  

or other vocabulary that might be difficult  for many people so if I'm if I'm introducing  

something like oh let me put a pin in that let me  put a pin in that let me put a pin in that then a  

lot of people might not understand what I mean if  they don't really understand the context and so I  

will take time to introduce something like this  and give an example so people can understand all

uh could you teach us the difference between  shall and ought to and maybe we'll put a pin  

in that too can you teach can can't pronunciation  difference uh you should get Frederick if you're  

looking for me giving you the difference between  certain pronunciations or not you will find those  

in Frederick as well I've already given like  you can hear me pronounce over 2 000 words and  

sentences and listen to them as often as you  like just click on the link in the description

school in Istanbul awesome yes if you need any  help uh especially like if well you can let us  

know what kind of students you teach but if we can  help you let us know and again Chinese uh phobic  

words are pronounced very similar let's see Benham  says when I speak to myself and record my voice it  

turns out to be so much fluent than face-to-face  conversation with the native English speaker yes  

this is often an issue with just confidence  that people have and that's a if you already  

have like a lot of uh really good vocabulary  and you already know a lot of grammar and you  

understand the language very well so if you can  communicate just fine by yourself but you get  

nervous in front of other people that's a separate  problem than just learning more of the language  

uh and then Tom again says I'm kind of worried  because I understand most of the words teacher  

Drew is saying but I can't speak that fast all  right try to get very specific about whatever  

issues you think you have so when you think  about not being able to communicate quickly  

is it because you can't uh recall the vocabulary  quickly enough because remember understanding is  

a different skill than speech and so if you  want to be able to communicate the same way I  

do uh like obviously that I'll talk more about  how you can do that but really think about the  

specific problem you have when it occurs and  and then it's much easier to solve the problem  

we learn faster with your classes says Olympia  glad to hear it hello thank you for your knowledge  

you provide glad to hear it all right does  everybody understand this idea all right  

so when I talk with people and I'm I'm trying  to explain to them how they should get fluent  

most most people who discover me usually they've  been learning for a long time but they still can't  

speak so they know a lot of English but they  still can't express themselves just like Tom  

was explaining there so maybe you know a lot but  you still can't communicate as well as you'd like  

for whatever reason and we can get into specific  things the more specific your situation is or your  

question is the more I can help you with that so  just let me know in the comments very specifically  

like what your problem is and when you when  it occurs and then I can help you with that  

but the core idea of this video is that fluency  it like it could come from this or it could come  

from this it could come from these other things  but these are two different things and the people  

I've I've been able to help the most quickly or  like the fact the quickest uh the fastest the most  

quickly are the people that are able to to look at  these as two different things so they can separate  

the means we'll just call these the means over  here so the means is like how you do something so  

the means of traveling from Japan to the United  States I could swim I could take a boat I could  

fly there are different ways I could do that so  different means m-e-a-n-s means and then this is  

the goal over here so the means is not the goal  the means and the goal are actually two different  

things and so what I noticed is that when people  begin thinking about this and and once they say  

fluency is the goal and I don't care how I  get there so I'm not thinking like I have  

to do this or I have to do that or I have to do  this other thing over here I'm just focusing on  

fluency and then it's much easier for me to teach  them okay here's what you should do all right so  

what I recommend people do and anybody who's been  watching my videos for a long time will know that  

you should be learning English as a first language  so rather than trying to uh worry about speaking  

like I actually don't recommend people spend a lot  of time trying to speak or forcing yourself before  

you're ready to speak because it's not really  going to build the confidence you need it will  

actually have the opposite effect so if you try to  speak you say something wrong maybe you embarrass  

yourself in front of other people you're trying to  like impress a girl or like a boss or whatever you  

want to speak like you know quickly and correctly  and impress the other person but then you do not  

then you go back oh no now I feel very bad bad  and you you kind of tell yourself mentally this  

is part of that psychology of language learning  where uh like you're you're you tell yourself if  

I speak like it's going to be embarrassing and  your mind just thinks about it that way even if  

you don't you're not consciously thinking about  it that way so your mind like I say something oh  

no I was embarrassed uh now now I don't want to  speak and this is why like people might have a  

uh like an easy time speaking by themselves but  if they get in front of other people then they  

feel nervous it's because they probably had some  kind of trauma like that they you know they felt  

bad about doing that so this is why I don't  recommend like we'll just put an X over that  

so I don't recommend you speak and and when  I go through these different things like the  

first thing I try to explain is that look you  you have different ways of getting fluent and  

then fluency is the goal like just forget what  you know forget what you think you know about  

getting fluent and just focus on fluency itself  and once you do that then your mind becomes much  

more open to trying different things that will  get you fluent and so I've been talking with  

people lately about like the one thing that they  have not tried that guarantees fluency and that  

is learning English as a first language and so  I'll put that up here let me just make some space

so learn English

as a first as a first language

so learning English as a first language rather  than worrying about anything else you might think  

like using translations is the opposite of doing  this that's learning English as a second language  

and this is something like any anything that's  like a means to getting fluent the important thing  

here is that you can test these so if you keep  trying to speak but you don't feel more fluent  

maybe you should stop doing that or if you keep  trying to study more words but you're not becoming  

more fluent then you should stop doing that or  if you're learning English as a first language  

and you think wow like I'm actually like little by  little becoming more fluent then you should keep  

doing more of that all right but the the point  here is like obviously I recommend you know like  

learning English as a first language because of  all the things I've tried this is the like the one  

that actually works maybe something different  works for you and if actually I if if someone  

found something better than learning English  as a first language I would love to hear it  

but I have not like in 20 years I have not found  anything better than this and so it like of course  

I personally recommend this but the point of this  exercise is really just to show you that if you  

are trying something and it's not getting you  the result you want then stop doing that thing  

so if you're trying to speak and it's not getting  you more fluent stop doing that thing all right  

because the real problem is not speaking more the  real problem is that you just don't understand  

what you're saying very well and so you can't like  recall it well maybe you don't pronounce it as  

well as you should or the grammar is incorrect  or something like that so if you can separate  

these two things these are the people I've found  who have been most successful who have become  

fluent the fastest where they think like huh like  maybe I maybe I don't need to speak to get Floyd  

let me test that idea let me try doing  something different and then see what happens  

and those people are the ones who get fluent  but the people who just who argue with me and  

say like well I must speak like I have to speak  I have to live in an English-speaking country  

I say why there are lots of people who live  in English-speaking countries that don't speak  

so is living in an English-speaking  country essential to getting fluent  

no some people do and some people do not so it's  not about like living in a particular place or how  

old you are or how many hours a day you study it's  are you doing the right thing that actually gets  

you flown and so this is a very simple idea you  can test and the people who do this the people who  

can separate these two things this is I've found  the number one predictor for people who get fluent  

people who are able to look at these things  separate them and say like okay I'm going  

to try this way or I'm gonna like you can you  can test all of these things even if a teacher  

even if someone like me says hey you should  do this test it and find out is that true  

so this one has been true for me and I have not  found anything better in the 20 years that I've  

been teaching if you know anything post it in  chat because I'd love to hear it I'm always  

looking for the best way the most efficient  way to help most people I'm not looking for  

something like often you will see YouTube  videos or whatever about people who become  

fluent in other languages and it's like you know  they have like their own special thing that they  

try maybe something that works for them but I'm  looking for something that works for everybody  

so anybody that wants to get fluent they should  be testing these different things and seeing what  

actually works so the people who are willing to  to separate these because they are different all  

right you have to you have to end this belief that  these are the same thing they are not it's two  

different things there is the means and the goal  or you can call this the end the means and the end  

they're look just like moving from Japan to the  United States there are different ways of doing  

that all right I don't have to swim I don't have  to take a plane I don't have to take a boat those  

are just different ways I do that all right  let me know if anybody doesn't get this I'll  

go back through the chat and make sure this is  making sense for people all right uh uh let's see  

let's see can you do a stream all right so dran  says can you do a stream about how to understand  

if that makes sense about how to understand  like a native well or just like understand  

English I've done that before I can I can  cover that I guess again but if you if you  

look for understanding or understand on my  channel you should find videos about that  

science of understanding the science  of understanding well I could come  

in I could put another pin in that I just  like mentioned that like here the science

of understanding there you go for my benefit  up there all right uh Eamon says I couldn't  

find sentence on the app Frederick I just find  vocabularies how can I find sentences amen if you  

go into Frederick you will find the uh level from  level three up to level 35 so that's most of the  

app uh the sight words are going to be in uh the  pink and then in the gold you will have sentences  

in there too so any sentences that you find in  the in the games you will also find those in the  

in the word bank so when you're in explore mode  and you're testing the different letter sounds if  

you click on there should be a little like word  a little little book icon in red in the upper  

right if you click on that it will take you to the  word bank but you will find the sentences there so  

the Way Frederick works is we want to teach you  individual sounds then teach you words then show  

you how sentences work and so you see all these  even in a particular level so if you go to level  

three like if you have not upgraded the app at  all you should be able to go to the gold game and  

then it will give you senses so any sentence you  find you can find those in the word bank as well  

uh let's see last Vostro unfortunately I speak  so slowly because I think before make the best  

sentences is that normal because after many  years I couldn't change my habit yes and this  

is another problem that that people have  like I want to make it clear it's not your  

fault that you think like this it's because  people over the years you go to different  

language schools and everybody tells you this  everyone says like you must speak to get fluent  

well maybe everyone but me but most people  will tell you that and obviously like speaking  

is the goal and I tell people to speak and I want  people to speak too but the point is if you don't  

understand what you're saying then of course you  will hesitate when you're speaking so just like  

this this comment here you're talking about I need  to take time to think and process what I want to  

say before I speak and that's because you're  thinking about rules or did I find the right  

word to express myself all of that comes from the  typical ways of learning a language so rather than  

trying to understand the language first I really  want people to understand the language very well  

before trying to say something because the the  psychology of language learning is so important  

if you get into a conversation and and you're  you're just saying things and you don't know  

like really 100 if you're if you're expressing  yourself correctly uh or I mean maybe you will say  

the the wrong thing occasionally even me I will  still make you know some kind of mistakes when I'm  

speaking Japanese occasionally it happens uh but  now my confidence is so high because in general  

I speak very well and I know the language very  well and I can learn new things in language as  

I'm speaking with people but I don't spend I don't  get into a conversation now and like hesitate and  

think and translate whatever I can easily switch  to something else that I do know and then continue  

to learn other things from the people I speak with  so that's most of the learning I do is just from  

either watching movies or TV shows or whatever  listening to other people even in a conversation  

so if you don't feel confident in a conversation  it's because you have doubts about some part of  

the language all right and it's really because  of how people learn huh so that's connected all  

these different things are connected and I can  talk more specifically about that but hopefully  

you're you're getting the basic idea uh that  it's it's really these other methods over here  

that cause you to have doubts in conversations and  so the the thing that can switch is if you if you  

stop thinking like maybe this is not what I should  do just say maybe I'm not even trying to tell you  

what to think it's just ask yourself is that true  is it true do I have to speak to get fluent really  

maybe maybe not I don't know let me test the  idea and so do that for anything even what I  

tell you to do when I say learn English as a  first language test the idea does it help you  

or does it not help you I think it will help all  right uh I mean let's see it's truly let's see  

all right so Tom again it's truly very  difficult teacher Drew maybe I it's fear  

I don't know all right if you're trying  to figure out a problem try to look at  

um like try to contrast it with something else  so do you speak well like with your friends  

but not strangers or do you speak well in your  native language uh but maybe like English is the  

problem and like you don't you don't have like a  lack of confidence it's a lack of vocabulary it  

just just try to think about what that is so we  got an example earlier about speaking fine when  

you're by yourself but losing confidence when  you're in a conversation so in that case it's  

a confidence issue rather than like a vocabulary  issue but you just just be honest with yourself  

about what that is because if you can solve that  problem that's when you'll finally start speaking  

all right so I mean over well overthinking is it  good or bad yes it like over doing something over  

in general is going to be bad uh and like it's  not me telling you it's bad but it's you feeling  

frustrated by something so it's bad for you so if  you're in a conversation and you're thinking too  

much about grammar rules or whatever it's just  again you used like traditional methods like  

using translations or studying grammar rules  or whatever and you have to think to yourself  

maybe I should stop doing that all right just  maybe maybe I should stop doing that just ask  

yourself is it true this is probably like the  the most difficult belief for people to question  

because they think well of course like every you  like have to speak but if you ask yourself like  

do I just just think about that idea for a minute  maybe I don't have to speak and then Wonder like  

how would you develop fluency without speaking  and the truth is it comes from understanding  

well so when you understand something well you can  speak about it and you notice this in your native  

language as well so even this isn't about English  at all just think about your native language so  

if I have to speak about something like if I'm  telling people I don't know about something I  

don't know anything like how to how to build a  house maybe I don't know anything about how to  

build a house so I can't speak very well about  it I could I could maybe guess or something but  

I couldn't talk about that in detail I don't have  any expertise in that but I can talk a lot about  

language learning because I'd spend a lot of  time like it's all of my time thinking about  

these things learning myself teaching other people  I've spent like thousands and thousands of hours  

doing this so I can speak well about it all  right so sometimes it's a question of uh like  

vocabulary lack or whatever but usually it's just  like can you can you separate these two things  

can you can you question like just look at like  even again what I'm recommending you do you can  

question that too like is Drew Bing is he serious  let me test that idea and find out all right you  

can't I don't I don't feel bad about that at all  all right but what I do what I do feel bad about  

is like when people want fluency but they're not  they're not willing to separate these two things  

so people who are like no I must uh the  only way I can get fluent is going to an  

English-speaking country okay there's probably  not much I can do to help you and that person  

will probably struggle all right that's just  what I've seen like I can speak with someone  

in in like two or three minutes and know like  pretty well if they will become fluent or not  

just like like even I mean obviously it's not  an instant process but the people who are open  

to this they're just focusing on fluency and  they're willing to try different things to  

do that those people get fluent uh most  easily all right uh let's see and I think

uh all right I think I got that one all right so  Eunice let's see teach you you're wonderful can  

you give us some magic phrases and expressions  to use that helps us when we get stuck speaking  

like well kind of you know uh I do that in the  there's uh like if you get stuck when speaking  

I think it's another live video I did uh maybe  a month ago just search the channel but you will  

find like specific phrases in that video that  I talk about that I don't remember the name of  

the video unfortunately but uh it will it will  it does cover a few different things like that  

uh let's see and until it begins to uh Eunice says  I'm not pressing by pressing You by saying you're  

wonderful but really you're meant it's helped  me a lot I don't know what that word means maybe  

you meant to say something else praising maybe uh  but yes I'm glad to say uh glad glad that they're

all right let's see in one also in my case I  found that I learn and remember words easily  

listening to a lot of anime to you Etc so at  the so all that makes me think in English and  

talk with ease thanks again yeah yeah this is  it's not really a complicated issue it's just  

like I a lot of my channel is trying to get  people to think about foundational stuff like  

the most basic stuff about language learning so  usually let me clear this all this stuff here

so what you usually find on YouTube is like  very like it's not high level it's just more  

um I don't know we'll we'll just say like the  foundational foundational stuff about how people  

learn so like the most important ideas are going  to be over here uh like it becomes less and less  

important as you move away from the foundational  ideas so the stuff on YouTube that you'll see most  

of is like individual words and phrases so you  see lots of videos about like 10 words where you  

can do this or hear 20 words and phrases about  whatever but this is like it's very like it's  

it's very like unimportant if you don't understand  the foundational stuff about language learning as  

an example uh like I could watch a video about 10  new phrases but if I forget that vocabulary the  

next day then I just wasted my time all right so  it's much better to understand like like an idea  

of like how to learn vocabulary is down here what  vocabulary to learn is up here all right so you  

notice like the the stuff I like to talk about I  really want to focus on this because if you know  

this then everything else becomes much easier  if I just and I do teach lots of vocabulary and  

even in a video like this you will hear me using  vocabulary or phrases but I want to want you to  

understand these kind of core ideas all right  so this stuff is more popular because people  

like typically they think they need to learn more  vocabulary to get fluent do you see how that works  

so we talked like just a minute ago we have like  it's really two ideas so you have like the means  

and then the goal you can just call this  the end and people think like I must learn  

new words to get fluent where I just like put  this as like kind of one thing so I must learn  

new words to get fluent so they're connecting both  of these is one thing when like it's just not true  

do you have to learn new words to  get fluent or should you actually  

understand the vocabulary very well and  try to learn fewer words and really learn  

and become fluent in that vocabulary  and then learn some new vocabulary  

you can test that idea yourself so when I meet  people I say okay are you continuing to watch  

more of this content but it's not working it's  not getting you fluent if it is then keep doing  

more of that but if it's not then stop doing that  so I want people to focus on like how like this  

is the like the how of what we do and this is  the what over here so once you know how to do  

something then then do more of that but if you  don't know how like if the how is not working  

like you're trying to learn more words but it's  not getting you to the goal then stop doing that  

stop doing that and it's hard to do but like it's  you know this is this is basically what people are  

doing like a lot of people are doing and this is  why there's so much of this content about language  

learning like here's 10 words and here's 20 words  or whatever stuff like that so it's good to learn  

new vocabulary but only if you understand if  you're building fluency in that vocabulary first  

uh uh let's see uh let's see what can I do to  improve my pronunciation so part of that there's  

basically two things with pronunciation uh the  first one is learning the individual sounds of  

English the same way native children learn it and  this is what we do in Frederick you can click on  

the link in the description below this video to  get that I made this whole app with me pronouncing  

like every single sound and even words that are  not real words just so you can listen to the  

differences and develop pronunciation the same way  natives do step by step all right so I spent like  

years and lots of money to make this for you all  and it's super cheap download the app and start  

improving your pronunciation and listening and  grammar and vocabulary that way so that's how you  

want to improve your pronunciation so the second  part of that is that you're listening to How words  

blend together in sentences and remember that as  native children are learning vocabulary or they're  

learning to pronounce things they don't actually  begin with with written language they begin with  

just hearing different things and so it's often  surprising as I mentioned in I think it was my  

last video where we talk about like I used to do  something like I used to do something but when we  

pronounce this normally we take this D here and  this T this really just erases it's it disappears  

and this is more like a duh so it's like I used to  do something I used to do something so young kids  

when they hear this I used to do something I used  to do something they are surprised and they will  

make mistakes when they write they will forget to  put the D in there because they they're just not  

thinking about it that way so once you learn the  individual sounds like a native and the reason  

it's important to do that is because you can  figure out exactly what sounds you can't make so  

what sounds do you need help with like there could  be some sounds in Spanish that are also in English  

and you make those sounds easily but other sounds  are different so they're more maybe difficult to  

understand or hear or pronounce all right but once  you find those you can go through step by step and  

do that and then also you will hear things even in  the app itself you will hear how words are Blended  

together in the app all right this is the same  way you would do pronunciation training if you  

had like a live coach like that person would tell  you a word and you would try to pronounce it back  

it's really that simple but all we do in Frederick  is make sure you can go through it step by step to  

learn all those so just click on the link in  the description below this video to do that  

all right and uh Zaza says I am facing distraction  in speaking and that make me feel stuck although  

I have a fruitful source of vocabularies and  sentence all right uh yes so think about again  

when you get stuck specifically like why if if  you have vocabulary why do you get stuck think  

about that just think about that for a moment and  and post a response in the chat all right and last  

avastra says thank you Owen says oh and whatever  sometimes even though I know the correct grammar  

I still make basic mistakes or use grammar for  my native language when I try to speak due to  

nervousness yes and again that the psychology  of language learning is so important for that  

reason and it's important to develop the right  habits as you're learning the right way so this  

is why I tell people when you start learning  English as a first language like you're you're  

basically switching your brain around you're  telling your brain it's okay I don't need to  

worry about translations and trying to understand  things uh like through my native language I should  

be learning things in English and that's when when  you don't think about the vocabulary anymore you  

just you use it correctly it's usually because  you've heard it so many times you've gotten so  

many good examples all in English so another idea  here when we're thinking about what are the most  

important things you should be focusing on not  learning more vocabulary but like the really core  

things about learning is that the the ideas or  vocabulary or grammar whatever that thing is that  

gets you stuck in a conversation it's just because  you haven't reviewed it enough to feel really  

confident about that vocabulary all right it's  it's really the same problem as this like people  

trying to learn more but they don't review that  vocabulary so they forget it all right and this  

is why we have naturally varied review we want to  we want to take some new vocabulary and review it  

again and again in different ways I want to hear  it in different tenses I want to hear it from  

different speakers I want to hear it at different  speeds or even just if I have some kind of core  

vocabulary like to put a pin in that this is an  idea about saving something for later so once I  

understand what that is I'm thinking about it as  a native does I'm not really thinking about the  

vocabulary I'm thinking about the situation and  then I know a few different ways of expressing  

that so one way is to put a pin in that so we got  a question from dran earlier and it's like talking  

about how do you know if you're getting fluent or  how do you know if you're fluent and so I I can't  

answer that right now let me answer that in a  minute after I've explained some other things I'll  

put a pin in that it's like okay here's like an ID  I'm just going to stick that up here make sure it  

doesn't go away to put a pin in that another  way I could express this is to put something

on the back burner

to put something on the back burner so both  of these have the same idea you can use them  

interchangeably so it doesn't matter which one  you use these are different Native expressions  

for the same idea so we begin with the idea or  the situation which is saving something for later  

like you're in a meeting and one person says hey  let's talk about this I say okay that's great we  

will talk about something else first and then we  will talk about your thing all right so we will  

save it for later so we will put a pin in that  or we will put that on the back burner so if you  

think about cooking the idea of that usually like  you are standing here trying to cook something  

here your hands and you've got different  burners on the stove where you're cooking  

so we're looking at it from the top here so a  person might be cooking some soup or something  

on this burner and then maybe they want to make  something else but they want to keep the soup  

warm for later so they take the soup and put it  on a back burner all right so we take a physical  

idea like this and we use this for like saving an  idea or a topic or something like that for later  

all right but I'm giving you these examples and  just reminding you about things like this because  

this is how native speakers learn the language so  you're learning it as a first language rather than  

trying to like take something like this and and  I want to translate it into my native language so  

it's those things that cause a lot of the issues  that people have almost really all of the issues  

until you start learning English and understanding  it as a first language you will continue to have  

those issues all right so the hopefully this has  been has this been an entertaining and interesting  

video for people hopefully it has now the  kind of the like you know one thing about  

this is like this this information is always much  more interesting to people that's why I see more  

people making content about that but this stuff is  much more important if you want to become fluent  

all right remember that so that's why I do  this and also these are things I do myself  

I don't I don't spend a lot of time watching  YouTube videos about learning vocabulary I  

think about something like here's a grammar  point I don't understand I'm going to like  

really focus on that and try to understand that  like a native with lots of different examples  

all right uh let's see and all right oh no the  chest came down oh no chat all right uh let's see  

please thanks tell me the ways to speak English  like a native accent yes so again I mentioned  

that about pronunciation so you're also learning  like think about what particular accent you want  

you want to sound like me like speaking a little  bit clearly a bit more easier to understand or you  

want to sound like a favorite actor of yours or  something but whatever that is focus on that so  

use the pronunciation tips I gave earlier about  understanding like a native so get Frederick in  

the link in the description below this video so  you can go through that it will it will really  

improve your pronunciation and listening but then  you can also learn you know for individual things  

like an actor or somebody that you'd like to  sound like but you should be spending more  

time listening to Native examples of that rather  than listening to teachers talking about stuff

the preposition on now I know a lot thanks to  the previous video you made about it yes I know  

it's it's like not sexy if I if I make a video  that's just like here's let me teach you one word  

people like no I'm not clicking on that I want  to learn 50 words you know and those people are  

thinking up here but the people who get fluent  are thinking down here so they're thinking like oh  

one word wow let me that must be an interesting  video I bet maybe I can learn a lot about that  

and I have seen like other people I know there's a  guy who does uh like Japanese videos like teaching  

Japanese uh so he still teaches it through English  which I don't recommend but again like that's  

people can do what they want to do but he does  focus on particular things which is a good idea  

so focus focus is key all right uh so Duran says  again so it's the how not the what yes once once  

you understand the how it's like if I know how  to get somewhere then I can do the what the what  

is the fun part after you like I mean it still  it should be fun to do the how part also don't  

you want to know how you should be doing something  if I'm doing something that's not getting me what  

I want so if I want fluency and I'm studying  every day but I'm not getting fluency maybe I  

should stop doing that some people they think like  maybe I should do it more I'm not studying enough  

it's like no no no like when you learn the right  way you should become a little bit more fluent  

and maybe I'll maybe I'll take the pin out of uh  Duran's question right here and just answer that  

uh at this moment so he was saying how do you  know you're getting fluent and you know you're  

getting fluent because you have that aha moment  it's like ah like I understand something each time  

you understand something a little bit more you  feel more fluent I'll give you a perfect example  

about this so last night I was talking with my  my younger daughter Noel so Noel is four years  

old and she said what did she say I think she said  what was the word she said she was trying to think  

for a moment and she said I don't remember exactly  but it was something like this like uh what will

we do

today so today let's see she said today night

foreign what will we do today night and so when  I'm when I'm looking at that um like a few things  

are happening in in her mind so she's she makes  a mistake like this one of these is that uh like  

you can say this in Japanese and it works the  same way so she's she can speak Japanese also  

and she might say like Kyon like like today's  night something like that uh and so like I've  

heard her use this before and so I want to correct  that but not just like tell her what to say like  

get her thinking about that in a different way  like not teaching her through Japanese but helping  

her understand that in English and so what I  said to her is like look look we've got today

and we can also have

it and like when I when I kind of separated it a  

little bit for I was like look  today it's the day like today

and like I could see her eyes like oh like I got  it now and now she understands how to say tonight  

okay so it's it's really about like learning  something and it's much better to solve each  

one of these you kind of learn each one of these  as a piece and this is why I tell people you get  

fluent word by word as you understand more so you  get fluent like if you understand a phrase like  

put a pin in that like I put a pin in something  or I put something on the back burner so we will  

we will save that idea for later let's put that  idea on the back burner for now okay and just like  

I'm explaining that so she became fluent in this  particular thing now she's like aha okay I get it  

I understand all right so look today and we have  tonight so she's like oh okay tonight I got it now  

all right and so now she can use that and  she can feel more confident about that so  

I could hear in her conversation you know she's  saying something to me and she says what will we  

do and I can see her like thinking about that  she's trying like she's still trying to think  

about it consciously rather than just use it  automatically so what will we do today night  

and I say Oh you mean tonight like look today and  too late like today and tonight it's the same day  

and then she gets it and then she's able to use  that so she becomes fluent uh to go back to this  

question over here how do you know you're becoming  fluent in a language you become fluent in a  

language as you become fluent in the pieces of it  so you don't you don't like jump to being fluent  

in the whole thing like there are lots of words  that I don't know in English you know I often show  

this this like very simple chart here but maybe  two percent of the vocabulary is what's actually  

used commonly and then the rest of it is like a  lot of people just don't know that vocabulary or  

they don't use it frequently think about that it's  90 you know it's like 98 of of of the words in a  

language that people don't don't know or don't  use am I am I not fluent if I don't know all this

I'm fluent in the words that I'm fluent in all  right I know this sounds weird but as you learn  

this you understand like ah today and tonight  I get it and so you become fluent in that you  

move on to the next thing and you get fluent in  that so some things you can become fluent in in  

that vocabulary meaning you can use it correctly  uh automatically without thinking about rules or  

anything you can do that very quickly so if  you learn the right way this is why having  

a good teacher is so important but if you learn  it the right way then you understand it and you  

can use it quickly other things maybe they take  more examples but that's how you do it so you  

become fluent and you know you're getting fluent  because you actually feel yourself using those  

things correctly so you don't you don't just  try to memorize a bunch of words you're not  

trying to learn every word in the language  and know it not very well you want to begin  

building a vocabulary just like native children  do you learn English as a first language okay  

all right I think people are getting it though  all right let's see Vita says uh being an English  

teacher in private school here in Brazil even in  the basic levels you have to make the conversation  

time you can feel the students struggling they  can't apply so fast yes like it's it's really hard  

to do because even people I would love to have  like a competition at a school with somebody if  

someone wanted to do that so I go to school like  you give me half of the kids you do things your  

way and I will do things my way and I would like  I would get them speaking faster I bet especially  

if people are continuing like okay okay class now  it's time to like understand through speaking or  

whatever and every class I've ever been in it's  always the same thing like the kids are too shy  

they don't want to say anything it's embarrassing  if you make a mistake or you know you're saying  

something wrong whatever people hate that and  that's because they don't actually understand  

what they're saying but the interesting is the  interesting thing is they want to speak and so  

it's just like speaking comes after understanding  all right it's like if I told someone hey I want  

you to teach a class about fixing cars but they  don't know anything about fixing cars they're  

going to feel very shy and worried about that  like what I can't teach a class about fixing  

cars I don't know anything about that all right  but maybe they can teach a class about something  

else so we always begin with understanding we want  to make sure people understand the language very  

well so they feel confident about using it this  the confidence is so important because people  

don't they don't learn languages like robots it's  not like you just put vocabulary in and understand  

it logically and then use it people don't work  that way it's not how the human mind works  

all right uh let's see what and Mel gorzata nice  to see you there hello everyone this is my first

are you doing with your visual guide of phrasal  verbs lessons you should be uh improving well  

let's see Juan says something I would like to  mention is that before I was trying to collect in  

my mind a really large variety of words in order  to speak and I realize that if you know very few a  

few well you can talk yes so you don't want to  overload your mind and I talked about that in  

maybe two videos ago so I was talking about how to  how to learn vocabulary without being overwhelmed  

by it and even with an example like this we have a  particular idea they want to express a particular  

situation so to put a pin put it I mean put a pin  in that so to put a pin in something or to put  

something on the back burner it's the same idea  you don't need to remember those you don't need I  

mean you will kind of recognize it if you learn it  and remember it as I as I taught you but just pick  

one it's like your phrase for that situation and  then you don't have to try to remember everything  

just like Juan is talking about you you focus on  a few things know them very well and then you can  

just talk about that and your vocabulary will  improve over time but your fluency is already  

like very good from the from a very early part of  learning because you're getting fluent it's like  

your your vocabulary expands as your fluency  expands all right but what happens with most  

people is like I don't even I don't know if I  could I've never tried to draw this uh before but  

it's almost like the the way uh like a native so  we have like a native we'll just put native for  

here and uh L for learner over here so if we  have a circle let's just say a circle is like  

it represents how much vocabulary you have and  then your fluency is like kind of a smaller  

circle inside of that and as you improve like  there are lots of words you know but maybe you  

don't feel so confident about using them that  kind of thing so this is true even for natives  

so natives will have there's a difference here  between like the words that they know and feel  

confident about using and the other vocabulary  that like you've heard that but maybe you don't  

use it very frequently or you don't you don't  really understand what it means it happens but  

for Learners it's almost like they have like a  large vocabulary but like they only have like  

a small amount of fluency in that vocabulary  all right so this is it's this space over here  

that causes all the trouble so they know how to  say hello and yes and no and please and thank  

you but then you know they know a lot they  can understand like they can understand what  

I'm saying but they don't feel confident using  that so the native has a much wider vocabulary  

and they feel more confident about using  that all right but this is the basic idea

uh let's see translates the Hound not the  what yeah okay I read that one already  

uh and Olympia says I talked to myself in English  yes it's certainly fine to speak to yourself in  

English as long as you're improving but typically  you're you're not going to find much improvement  

speaking unless it's just trying to  repeat something to practice saying that  

um but you you you you should always be  spending your time trying to learn more  

and to learn more deeply about the vocabulary you  know that's what's really going to help you speak  

uh let's see and as I was again okay teacher  Drew I will do what you say thank you yes do  

what I say do what I say all right Angel again I  talk to myself too with the cat and the dog again  

all right so Eunice again what's the little what  is the title of the previous video where you were  

talking about the magic phrases uh is it the one  where you talked about the nine words uh I think  

you have to look at the topics of the videos I  don't remember exactly but it's talking about  

uh uh like if you get stuck in  conversations or how not to get stuck  

in conversations but it gives examples  of specific things you can say foreign

all right and uh e McGraw says thank you Eunice  again as I got from you I should consider myself  

a baby native speaker accept mistakes and grow  it with the language until being an adult native  

speaker uh uh I'm not saying like accept mistakes  like the typical advice you will get and even me  

like when I was like when I began teaching I told  people the same thing like and I tried to do it  

myself and this is try to force yourself to speak  and accept mistakes and like go through it and do  

it anyway but like it's actually not a good idea  because of the psychology of of language learning  

where we don't like uh being wrong or making  mistakes in front of others so it's not it's  

not like a speaking mistake is logically going to  hurt you but but that actually happens so people  

feel nervous and because they they think about  making mistakes they make mistakes so there's  

just you know there's all these different things  about communication that especially if you're an  

adult and you're trying to learn a language um as  an adult it's it like you you're expected to be a  

good communicator because you're an adult but then  you try to learn a different language and now you  

are like a baby again and you can't speak and Ah  that's incredibly frustrating for people I know  

that's frustrating for me pardon the uh siren out  there but in general you have to think about like  

uh think about what words you make mistakes with  and then go deep into those words and figure out  

if like what what is the mistake I'm making am  I not pronouncing it correctly or am I having  

trouble with grammar or something but that will  help you really understand the vocabulary and then  

because you understand the vocabulary you won't  make the mistake in the conversation so don't  

don't think about it as like trying to struggle  through mistakes or whatever it's more like a  

very calm and enjoyable oh let me understand  what I'm doing wrong okay like you don't have  

to feel bad about that and the good news is you  can do this all by yourself so no one will know  

so you can be at home and just like learning like  what we do in fluent for life is help people learn  

the language and become fluent even before they  start speaking because they know the language  

so well so just like the the today and tonight  example I gave to my daughter like that's the  

same thing I would give to you I'm not trying  to tell her like explain it grammatically or  

give her like a linguistic explanation it's just  hey look you can talk about today like look it's  

today where you can talk about tonight today  and tonight so she gets it uh let's see hello  

from our planet and Maya says hi over there Buena  pronunciations is a Victor uh my my Bueno I guess  

should be maybe that's movie I don't  know if you just wrote that my Bueno  

uh let's see the wizard guy how can I build up  from Reading easy articles to very literate and  

complex to understand articles uh you can  easily push yourself uh I don't have like  

a specific list of books or anything that that  I would recommend but you should be looking for  

things that you understand 80 to 90 percent of  so if you read something new that should be about  

the limit you really want to understand things  without needing to look up words in a dictionary  

so you can understand things just from  the context of the of the situation  

like the example I gave before about putting a pin  in something it's like oh that's a great comment  

let's put a pin in that and we'll talk about it  later so even if you don't understand like the  

idiom expression I'm using you can get the general  idea of like oh he means save something for later  

all right but if the vocabulary is too difficult  or you can't understand things from the context  

then you should go back to something a little  bit easier but I guess a simple way to do this  

is like go through the regular age ranges  of information that like school age kids  

would go through so start with elementary  school and work up from there maybe go to  

college or you know graduate level academic  papers or something if you're interested in  

that but just make sure you understand most  of the vocabulary already so the new things  

are there it's like exercise and you know  you start you stretch yourself a little  

bit and then you go up to a higher weight  and then stretch yourself a little bit more

uh let's see buenos explosiones a very good  explanations for reach a better understanding  

of what are we doing and this is another thing  people often say like like do it like what are  

we doing it but it's what we are doing what we are  doing and again this comes the more input you get  

the more understandable messages you get the more  you will feel wow I actually understand like how  

to use this correctly because you're getting lots  of examples of it rather than just getting one  

example and then trying to repeat that again and  again you want to hear lots of different examples  

uh Drew there is still a question from the  back burner science of understanding ah yes  

Duran okay all right yes I had that one on the  back burner apologies uh for that now we can yes  

that's true so the science of understanding is up  here let me let me tackle that question right now

there are a few that's even a pretty broad  topic the science of understanding uh and  

so what I can explain right now it's not I don't  know I'm sure you will find some academic papers  

that are that are like backing this up uh but  there are two different ways uh to understand  

information in general as like as a language  learner uh and and you'll notice these are  

like the basic categories I always give so you  have learning English as a second language and  

learning English as a first language and so  if you're just trying to understand something  

to get to the aha moment where you really feel  I really understand something so I can use it  

fluently it's more difficult to do this with  English as a second language because you're  

connecting uh like vocabulary so this is your  native we'll just say this is like the native  

language vocabulary with English language  vocabulary and if you don't quite understand  

something like let's say I use a word like uh like  free so if as an example I am a native Japanese  

speaker uh and I hear the word like I don't  know like I take a word like free in English

uh I could translate that back into Japanese as  like mudio which means like it's free like there's  

no price for that thing but like Hima is another  word that's like I'm free like I don't have  

anything to do right now so it's two completely  different ideas like one is just me having free  

time and the other is something being free like  no price all right and so when you learn and and  

you're trying to develop understanding this way  it's just really going to make it more complicated  

for you so the easier way we go always from the  situation to the vocabulary so you see me like I'm  

talking about money in a situation and I say oh  like there's no there's no fee you don't have to  

pay any money it's free and so the situation is  I don't have to pay money and the vocabulary we  

use for that is free and so you're learning it in  English by understanding the situation rather than  

trying to connect this with some vocabulary  in your native language so the science of  

understanding comes like uh on this on this level  for trying to use it because uh it's important to  

learn to not learn this way because this causes  you to think and process in your mind and this  

way does not and when we want to communicate the  ideas to have a good conversation that's flowing  

well you can see I'm continuing to speak instead  of getting stuck like this would be a very bad  

YouTube video if every minute I'm like pausing  and hesitating if people are just listening to  

this they would think oh no there's something  wrong with the video all right but if I'm in  

a conversation uh and I'm and I'm stuck trying  to think like is this the right meaning of free  

because they're beginning with a translation  in the native language and then moving into  

English rather than thinking like oh yeah when  you don't spend money or you don't have to spend  

money something is free so this idea of like the  science of understanding something like this it's  

uh specifically for language learning because  it's not just about understanding the information  

it's also about being able to use it quickly  confidently and correctly all right so we don't  

just want to like learn something intellectually  or logically we want to know it so we can feel  

confident using it without thinking about it all  right and so there are other things like this like  

that help us learn English as a first language  uh and another one of these things is contrast  

so if I can look at two of these markers you've  probably seen me do my like Japanese or alien  

lesson example with these but if I have two  of these same things and I say like blah blah  

and gobbly then you think oh okay like blah blah  and and gobbly now these aren't these aren't  

Japanese words or English words I'm just making  this up like it's an alien language but you your  

mind is like oh look at that like God blee or  like now I'm already confusing myself because  

I just made this up but the point is I'm looking  at two things that are the same and the only thing  

different is the color and so then it becomes ah  it's much easier for me to understand something  

I can understand the situation and learn this as  a first language rather than trying to learn it  

through something else so if I can just give like  a very simple thing about understanding like this  

trying to understand through your native language  is going to be much more difficult it will take  

you much longer and it will probably stop you from  expressing yourself but if you learn English as  

a first language it's much easier much faster and  you start speaking fluently much sooner all right

mean now this is interesting for me as like a  language teacher I'm always thinking like what  

could they mean probably that means trouble  I'm guessing but yes if you have trouble  

understanding grammar I would begin with something  more simple so just like this like if I look at uh  

if I'm trying to teach somebody like some basic  Japanese I'll just give you that lesson like

kuroimaka now I've just given you an example that  has pronunciation vocabulary and grammar in it  

so you're learning not only the vocabulary like  red and marker or blue and marker and black and  

marker but you're also learning like the adjective  comes before the noun you're learning that maybe  

oh like the adjective changes a little bit so  just the word red by itself is akka but it becomes  

all right maybe I've got a  red hair like Akai coming okay

all right and so you're learning things like  that when you're going back and understanding  

the grammar you should be able to see it for a  lot of the basic things or you should be able  

to understand it from stories so these are the  things that we do in fluent for life that help  

people understand grammar but really the most  important thing is to get lots and lots of  

examples of that so like if you're looking at  a particular textbook like here let me I can  

show you a uh like a Japanese textbook I'm I'm  going back through just because I wanted to get  

some examples for a test so I can show you what  this looks like so this is like a lower level  

of Japanese grammar for the like the N4 which  is uh so there are five levels I think I don't  

know if they're even still five levels this is a  pretty old book and I typically don't study with  

textbooks but I wanted to know the order of the  things that they were teaching in here and what  

you'll notice in this book this is pretty typical  for language learning is that you will have like  

an explanation like maybe an example or two you  about something and it will explain it and like  

you notice there's lots of English in this too  so they're not able to understand or help people  

understand it all in Japanese so they give an  explanation in English so this is how you know  

your level of understanding or like your ability  to teach is weaker because the student doesn't  

actually understand what you're saying you need  to like explain it again all right and so and  

then you get like one page on that where you don't  really Master the grammar point and then you move  

on to the next one after that so this is that's  uh as pretty much most language learning is like  

that so it's a lot of quick examples of things  and and if you want to understand if you have  

trouble understanding focus is the key get lots  of examples until you really feel confident you  

should have that aha moment where you think ah I  really get it I understand how to do this and I  

can feel confident that I'll use it use it well in  conversations so that's what you do uh uh and Dan  

still says but if you don't understand in advanced  literature book how could we achieve to read a  

book like that well again you do it in steps it's  like how do you eat a whale one piece at a time  

how do you eat a whale like a giant whale how do  you eat a whale one piece at a time and so you  

don't try to jump to a book like that why would  you do that you're just going to cause yourself a  

lot of struggle and pain and frustration so take  the steps this is why like everything we do is  

in steps so everything in Frederick is in steps  everything we do in fluent for life is in steps  

also so you start with something easier that  you understand and you work up to that thing

you don't just you don't try to jump here to some  difficult book I wouldn't do that in Japanese if I  

can't read all the the characters in it why would  I do that I'm looking up in the dictionary every  

minute like I don't know what character that  is let me look that up I don't want to do that  

I want to enjoy the process of reading and get  into the flow and then learn a few more words  

and move up like that so I don't want to overwhelm  myself because I know if I do that then that will  

cause me psychological stress I will not want  to learn more I will feel frustrated won't be  

able to communicate with people it just causes too  many problems so take your time I know everybody's  

all like they're trying to they're trying to learn  you know a hundred new words a day when you don't  

need to learn 100 new words a day to speak so  if you don't need that why are you doing it  

you don't have to do that don't put pressure on  yourself like them so it says teacher Drew do you  

recommend the mirroring technique in English as  I know it helps to avoid repetition uh uh well um  

like there there are different ways to like repeat  after other people and that's pretty easy to do  

little kids do that as well like it's possible to  do but to prepare yourself for real conversations  

what I always tell people is naturally varied  review you should be getting lots of different  

examples so you want different examples of like  the grammar in different uh situations or hearing  

that sentence or the vocabulary from different  speakers because you need to be prepared for  

the kinds of things you will hear in real life  so if I just like repeat after one teacher and  

that teacher is speaking slowly and clearly like  maybe I'm repeating or shadowing or mirroring or  

whatever people want to call it but I should be  spending more time actually hearing 10 different  

people say that same thing rather than just  hearing one so especially if it's a teacher  

like you might be repeating after what I'm saying  trying to speak along with me that's great but you  

should be getting also lots lots of examples of  other people doing that so there's the naturally  

varied review which I talk about in basically  every video it's it's really just the way of  

getting the repetition without being without  being bored by it all right so if you just like  

repeat after yourself it's going to be boring I  should make a video about like why repetition is  

actually hurting a lot of people because like they  always talk about repetition and spaced review and  

these kinds of things but these are just kind  of not very good ways of trying to trick your  

brain into remembering something what naturally  varied review is the the like the uh the natural  

they call it naturally varied review because it's  what your brain actually wants to do all right uh  

let's see Victor says a store in Newville and  um yeah I'm like you're going to hear my my uh  

I can probably understand some Spanish from  when I took Spanish in college but like my  

pronunciation is pretty crap I can only say like  I probably told my Spanish story like about the  

clock in the back of the room and I would just  say like que Horas to the to the teacher because  

I would go into the class early and and and set  the clock ahead a little bit so the class would  

be over faster because I hated that class yeah I  don't really remember much Spanish so genjem says  

that every people so ever you can say all people  or everyone uh say except you they say just speak  

if you do a mistake while speaking why waste your  time first understanding is important and then you  

can speak automatically without thinking yes it's  also less embarrassing for people there's lots of  

good reasons to just understand the vocabulary  well it's easy to do it's quickly or you can do  

it quickly and then you don't have to worry about  embarrassing yourself in conversations there will  

be times yeah when maybe you say something  wrong but if you're at a good level then I  

mean native speakers they will say the wrong word  or something all the time that's pretty common  

he McGraw is back I have a hard time speaking when  I'm with among many people like a group uh what I  

practiced that was going to say doesn't come out  good and when it's my turn to speak how can you  

uh okay yeah and so again this is like the tricky  thing about having a group of people is is trying  

to follow all those people and then also you  know you're talking about preparing what you  

want to say I really recommend spending all of  your energy on understanding people if you click  

on if you just come to englishanyone.com you will  find lots of articles that we've released recently  

about understanding and pronunciation and things  like that and the most recent article I forget  

what that topic was about we've released quite  a few uh recently but it's talking about I think  

um like mentioning this like uh the active  listening and really spending your energy  

trying to listen to what other people are  saying and then not not trying to prepare  

things in advance the that way you can you  can listen to people and even if you don't say  

exactly what you want to say you can usually  think of an easier way to express something  

but that's how you prepare for that uh let's see  do I consider myself bilingual uh uh I don't know  

I don't know if I would call myself bilingual I  mean I don't know I mean I can get along in in  

Japanese without English and yeah I mean I don't  know I always when I think about people as like  

bilingual it always I just imagine that as them  like being younger like my kids are bilingual um  

but yeah I suppose you could say I mean my English  is obviously much better than my Japanese but you  

know if I can get along in in Japanese I can go  through my day without speaking any English at all

but yeah I guess you could I guess you could  say bilingual I guess uh let's see uh well  

he is man he speaks excellent Japanese well I  guess there you go I guess I'm bilingual music

yeah I can't uh yeah I don't know I  don't really care I guess uh Victor says

I'm going to stop trying to read these in Spanish  the Spanish Spanish sentences over here because  

I'm just gonna make let's see over here I'm just  gonna make some mistakes with it like that look  

at that I'm embarrassed about my mistakes I  can only if I if I practice something like  

that and I can't read the Spanish very quickly  my reading is is even slow in Japanese but I  

like to like hear something and like repeat  it if I hear something like in a movie or  

whatever was that like from Predator I think  I had that quote before it was like hombres

[Laughter] if you're a Spanish speaker you  know what I just said all right let's see uh  

uh all right Juan uh stop smoking since smoking  is a noun in that case stop smoking yes like the  

act the act of smoking would be like if you're  if you're well I mean it's a it's a verb if  

you're if you're talking about like smoking is  a thing you like to do yeah that's a whole like  

other complicated and try not to try not to like  confuse yourself with too many uh like thinking  

about grammar points or whatever like if it's a  noun or a verb or an adjective or whatever just  

really focus on the situation it's much easier to  remember that way uh I'm still unices I'm still  

confused about these stuff now you could say  I'm confused about this stuff or these things  

but to tell me what what specifically you mean  by that uh and Angel says don't forget to push  

the like button before leaving so yes you  would say before you leave or before leaving  

oh and again uh I receive a lot of input listening  to podcasts every day but it is not easy for me to  

practice speaking I am not shy about it but I  usually don't find a partner to practice with  

any advice for me uh well typically like people  should be getting most of their practice from the  

input itself if you get the input correctly now  like the the not very efficient way to get input  

is like to listen to One podcast and then listen  to some completely different thing over here what  

you should be doing is getting a whole bunch of  content about a particular thing that's how you  

get the practice so the practice comes as you're  like oh yeah you can use the language that way  

or you can also pronounce it that way or you can  you're answering all those questions for yourself  

without speaking so this is how you can develop  fluency without speaking and then when you do  

have an opportunity to speak and there are ways  to do that like meeting people even on YouTube or  

whatever like you can meet them through YouTube  by finding other people who share your interests  

you can send them messages and say Hey you know  we should talk sometime or whatever but you can  

develop relationships like that and it's and it's  pretty easy to find people to practice with but  

you don't really need to spend a lot of time the  the actual speaking is just a very small part of  

the time you should be spending with on with  understanding things but most people they like  

they don't spend enough time with the vocabulary  they learn and that's why they struggle to speak

um uh Poulter correction is to live but with a  slice a slight different meaning stop smoking  

versus stop to smoke well uh yes I mean they they  mean two different things so if you're talking  

about like stop to stop smoking is like you want  to quit doing that activity so maybe I've been  

smoking for many years and now I stop smoking but  if I stop to smoke it usually means I'm like I'm  

working I'm taking a break now I will stop working  so I can smoke so it's really completely different  

things there but very but you will notice that  as you hear like like I might be walking it's  

like let me stop to drink or stop to go to the  bathroom or stop doing this so it means like I'm  

doing something I will stop doing that and then  do something else like for like a quick break or  

whatever so if I'm driving for a long time I might  stop to get something to eat so let's let's stop  

to eat but if I stop eating it just means I don't  ever eat anything again and then I die so that's  

completely different I'm still confounded  but uh all right I think let's see if you  

are asked question above I'd like also like to  know honor to skip something yeah I think the uh

I don't know where that went was that how long ago  was that I'm scrolling up but I don't I'll Fanny  

over here I receive a lot of oh okay I think  I think I answered that um hopefully yes that  

makes sense but again like you you want to uh you  want to get lots of input about a specific thing  

so getting lots of different the variation  the naturally very review is more important  

than just like learning some random random  stuff we're going from one podcast to another

um let's see is these so you see are these  sentences correct what do you do when it  

rains or what would you do if it rains so one is  just asking like what do you do when it rains is  

like in general and what would you do is is like  talking about probably a specific instance foreign

let's see okay that was the question all right  so sorry uh it asks you again is it helpful to  

talk with an AI partner because I don't have an  English teacher um well you you like AI I think  

people are attracted to AI because they think like  they need to speak but you don't want to get like  

the real life doesn't speak like an AI robot  I mean not yet really like the maybe AIS are  

getting better but you need to have the input  of lots of different people who don't speak  

clearly who speak with different accents who  are using more difficult vocabulary and it's  

kind of it's hard to train an AI to do that  for you if you don't know what you're doing  

but you can get lots of input like find a topic  you're interested in and watch it on YouTube in  

English about whatever making pancakes or how to  make shoes or how to I don't know sell whatever  

and something like that but the point is find  something you're interested in and focus on  

that and then get the information like we do in  that um uh that espresso making espresso video  

uh uh let's see I don't think so I like to I talk  see I mean talk by myself but I want to know that  

so I repeat my question so I don't think so AI  doesn't speak like a real yeah okay Dan still gets  

it yeah so remember like the the practice you get  it doesn't come from speaking with another person  

you don't have to do that like it's nice if you  can but very few people are are like really good  

at giving the right input and you being able to  to get that at the same time it's just much more  

efficient for someone just to like like I'm going  to give you lots of input and help you understand  

it and that's what we do in fluent for life  and so you mean talking to a native speaker  

if that's so I think it is better to speak to a  native speaker than having an English teacher bro  

I would kill to have someone to talk with in  English hey you don't have to murder anybody  

for that just go online find topics you're  interested in and and connect with those people  

that's all you do the the tricky thing is that  you don't mention anything about learning English  

so don't say anything about learning English just  say like oh I'm interested in speaking with you  

about whatever you know like I also like talking  about this and and people won't really care about  

your English but you can find out more information  about a particular thing and and spend all your  

time getting the input improving the way you speak  improving your fluency and then when you're really  

able to communicate with someone you will have  that opportunity but it's not hard to do that  

uh thanks uh thank you so much for your  time Drew and your efforts I appreciate  

it glad to hear Eunice I think direct learning  or experience is more essential than thinking of  

rules and regulations yeah it almost says do you  think Duolingo works the way you do in teaching  

English uh no it does not and so Duolingo like  anything like that like uh where they're they're  

giving you like a very limited subset of review  and they're not really giving you many Native  

examples that are preparing you for for the real  world and that's the the difference between what  

Duolingo does and where people speak in the real  world is like it's like night and day um and so  

if you're trying to learn a few more words you can  do that with something like Duolingo but like if I  

if I look at an app it's it's it's not going to  be like how people really speak so the only way  

to do that is like this where I'm getting a nice  like step up I'm hearing some new vocabulary now  

that vocabulary is a little bit faster now I'm  hearing it from different speakers I'm hearing  

it in different tenses I'm seeing it in a real  conversation all of these steps work together to  

give you the review you need to build fluency all  right so like trying to go from an app it's like  

oh I just I passed another level in Duolingo now  I'm going to go out into the real world and speak  

like a native like I don't think I've ever heard  anybody do that so maybe they're also doing some  

something else on the side or whatever so in like  in addition to that but again like the people  

people forget how important input is the input is  so important because it's the only way to prepare  

you for a real life if you only listen to me like  one teacher and then you go out into the the real  

world and try to speak with people like you will  probably have some difficulty understanding them  

because they will be using some vocabulary  that you don't know or you won't be able to  

follow the vocabulary because it's too fast or  the accent makes it hard to understand so you  

need to practice yourself you need to listen to  people who Mumble like people who who don't speak  

clearly people who have a different accent people  who use slang and idioms and things like that but  

you have to study it you have to learn it in an  efficient way or it will it would just be like  

frustrating for you but again this is this is what  we do in fluent for life even if you don't join  

the program read about it and how we teach the  way we teach like because this is what gets you  

fluent it is possible to do this by yourself it's  just more difficult to like prepare information uh  

and to understand things so you need to get like  a dictionary or like understand a phrase like what  

did that guy say now I need to look that up uh  so it is possible to try to do that by yourself  

but for the people who just want to have it  nice and easy and to get fluent faster than  

that's what we do all right uh what just in case  look at that somebody using that handle fantastic  

just in case uh uh first time to catch  you in live yes we would say the first  

time to catch you live the first time  to catch you live all right Daniel says  

thank you so much and he's avasta says thank  you sir no way Duolingo is like Drew no way  

to explains deeply the way you use it on example  on off Duolingo doesn't do that yes like Duolingo  

Duolingo exists to I don't know like to teach  you some vocabulary but it's the it's also like  

forcing you to learn like a specific thing  so it doesn't really allow you to answer  

questions yourself and this is why when I when  I started building Frederick I wanted to think  

like how can you answer your own questions about  vocabulary because usually what happens is like  

in a in a program like Duolingo or whatever  like almost I mean every every program really  

they're going to tell you what to learn and  I think I've tried Duolingo before and it was  

like like here's a picture of a coffee and here's  a picture of tea and like it will say a word it's  

like coffee and like either you remember it  and you you tap the right answer or you don't  

or something like that it was a while ago that I  tried it but I thought like really like they're  

they're big they're like beginning with a word  like coffee which maybe people have heard because  

that's a common word but like like native English  kids aren't learning the word coffee they're not  

starting with that especially for like learning  the language if you're trying to teach it that  

way so what I what I did instead with Frederick  is is not instead of have like like a question  

and it's just like guess the right answer the  language learning process is really about you  

discovering how the language works okay so like  I gave this example before about ESL versus efl  

ESL is trying to tell you what something means and  then your teacher will hope you remember it for a  

test or something and it still doesn't prepare you  for for real life anyway but efl is like here's  

a situation and like look at that it's giving my  brain the chance to solve a puzzle like this one  

little thing right here so someone said something  like these are the words and this is the situation  

over here and I can connect that and like ah now I  understand what something means and so rather than  

doing this what Frederick does is like we want to  give you like different words if we have like b a  

t now you can tap on each one of these letters  individually and hear how that hear that how  

that sound is so you can like [Music] ah bat  and hear all of them so I have like another  

little like speaker icon over here that lets you  play the whole thing so I can hear these and then  

you're thinking to yourself like what happens if I  change the letters what happens to the language so  

maybe instead of a B I have a t over here so  I have the same sound over here it's like at  

tat tat now I could also like if  I have another letter over here

and if I change that it could be like at but  with the E over here it becomes at a and the E  

is silent so we call this like bossy e or silent e  or magic e but these are the rules that you learn  

especially with English because the the sounds are  quite difficult to learn just looking at random  

words so you have to learn them systematically  to understand the sound but it's like a puzzle  

and after you change something it's like if this  is taped then maybe we change this over here to m  

and we get meat oh isn't that interesting we got  eight meat but we cover up the E and we get Matt  

meat Matt mate Matt mate and so the point is for  you to discover how these things work for yourself  

because that is learning it as a first language  all right so everything I make all the programs  

it's all with the same uh basic idea in mind but  Frederick is really the thing like if you're going  

to use an app to teach yourself a language  like Frederick is going to be way better than  

Duolingo because it's giving you these things and  letting you understand them the way you want to  

so you're like okay I need to understand this  let me get like a bunch of different icons to  

understand what this word means all right so  rather than thinking about like this like kind  

of typical way of learning always always try  to learn everything as a as a first language

all right I think we're getting close to the end  of this but it's been a pleasure teaching you  

hopefully this idea makes sense uh just to recap  before we finish so this video is about the number  

one predictor of fluency so to know will you get  fluent or not the people I have found throughout  

my teaching career over 20 years uh is in the  people who can who can separate fluency from the  

means of fluency so if you if you really believe  that you must live in an English-speaking country  

to get fluent then you will probably not get  fluent so even if you live in the United States  

you will probably not get fluent all right and  if you think like you need to learn lots of new  

vocabulary to get fluent you will probably not get  fluent either the point is like can you separate  

these two and the and the the people who can just  focus on fluency by itself they will find a way to  

get fluent so you can test all the different ways  of of learning like including what I recommend  

learning English as a first language or trying the  various other things but if you been doing lots of  

different things including speaking and you're  not still speaking fluently then stop doing that  

stuff it's pretty easy all right uh I like this  class says Kevin Yang glad to hear it tell other

but the most important thing it does is that it  teaches you English as a first language so often  

people have like they might think they have a  higher level of communication that like a test  

gave them but uh lots of basic things in grammar  they might still make mistakes with so it's free  

to try but it's only like twenty dollars I  think if you if you get the whole app and if
