How To Speak Correct English, The Easy Way - EnglishAnyone.com

as usual I am Drew Badger the founder of  englishanyone.com and the English fluency  

guide is a pleasure to welcome you to another  video here on YouTube I'm going to cover this  

as I've been doing lately I'll try to take about  15 minutes or so at the beginning of the video and  

then I'll stay around and answer questions  if anybody has any but this video is about  

actually it's a friend of mine who is a teacher  in a school he's an English teacher and he has  

some I believe high school students and I think  maybe some I think it's high school students let  

me know if you're watching this let me know uh  I don't remember I think it's high school and  

maybe Junior High uh but anyway so he gets lots of  questions from students about grammar and I wanted  

to cover that because I also get lots of students  about grammar as well so this video is about how  

to speak correct English or how to speak correctly  and this is how to do it the easy way rather than  

trying to study a bunch of grammar rules or  definitions or translations the usual kinds  

of things that students do when they're learning  English as a second language so if you have any  

questions it's nice to see everybody there hello  hi if you have any questions post those in the  

chat and I'll be answering those so this is your  day to ask about grammar or whatever but my goal  

is to help you understand this like a native all  right uh so I will keep this very simple I know  

people are not really excited about grammar uh but  for me this is the most entertaining actually part  

of learning a language because what you're really  doing is learning a bunch of basically language  

patterns and once you learn a language pattern  then you can start applying it and it really  

multiplies your uh your vocabulary your ability to  speak your confidence everything improves as you  

learn so grammar is the foundation it's really  just the rules of the language but I want you  

to really think about grammar in a different  way especially if you have been learning it  

in the traditional way like the English as a  second language approach also let me know if  

my my levels are coming in fine if you can hear  me okay hopefully everyone can hear me just fine  

uh so basically yeah I'm doing fine  hopefully you guys are doing well too  

so basically uh just to keep this very  simple I would just say there are two  

main kinds of grammar errors that I see so  the first one is actually incorrect English

so an example of incorrect English and  these are some examples that I received  

from my friend who's a teacher so an example of  incorrect English would be one of his was apples

Apple's Farm Apple's Farm now to help you  understand this more like a native let me  

just show you how this might look visually so if  I'm going to draw a picture if I've only just seen  

this English here apples Farm what I'm thinking  is there's a farm owned by somebody named Apple  

a farm so we'll just uh even just like just to  be funny we'll draw a picture of an apple here  

so here's our our little apple and we'll put like  some overalls on the Apple you know like it's uh  

you know it's like working on the farm like there  it is Mr Mr Apple and he's got a like a pitchfork  

so this is Apple's Farm like someone you know  there's like a you know a pig over here and I'm  

gonna draw this very very badly so here's a pig  uh and you know maybe you have some other things  

over here but this would be if I'm using the the  English here apples Farm okay so it's a person  

or like an apple that has a farm all right now  this is different from we're going to contrast  

this with the uh what the what the student was  actually trying to say which was Apple Farm

uh which means we've got a farm with lots of  apple trees on it so here's an apple tree here's  

another apple tree like that all right so when I'm  teaching the first thing I want to do is really  

help you understand the difference from between  these things in like an easy to understand way  

the same way I would teach a child so an apples  apples Farm is like oh there's an apple or even  

a person named Apple who has a farm but this  one is an apple farm now sometimes you will see  

people using kind of incorrectly um especially if  you're if you're thinking like okay there are many  

of them like it's an Apple's Farm like there are  lots of apples and so we we use it this way this  

is often an air I'll see especially with Japanese  learners but I see it with many different people  

actually so they're talking about apples Farm  apples Farm but we don't use it grammatically  

you would just say apple farm and in the same  way we could have like a pear Farm uh banana Farm  

and the like all right another similar example  this is not something I got from my friend but  

I'll just add this because it's similar and  this is uh like if I have a two year old girl  

often people will put in an s in here because  they're talking about multiple years so they'll  

say two years old girl but we don't use the S  for that okay so two-year-old girl all right  

so anytime you're counting something even if it's  got multiple uh multiple years like a five day old  

this is like uh I don't know if I'm if I'm eating  some two-day old bread it's not two days old bread  

uh we're talking about again we're connecting  this as two-year-old girl or two day old bread  

or five-year-old something but we can also  talk about if we just want to say like the girl

is two years oh so this is where the confusion  comes from so this is correct with an s on here  

so two years old the girl is two years old  but we would just say a two-year-old girl so  

be careful about this uh I'll explain a little  bit more about how to learn this kind of grammar  

a little bit later do I want to keep this video  pretty short so I can answer any question people  

have but hopefully this makes sense all right so  I'm trying to First just help you understand this  

from related examples okay related examples  so we've got Apple's Farm where we have the  

apostrophe there and then we've just got  Apple but we don't use the S an apple farm  

apple farm all right so that's incorrect English  where you're just being grammatically incorrect  

and you can have some kind of like some  funny results or some funny consequences  

from that all right the next thing we  might have is unnatural English unnatural

now in this case you actually could have uh it  could be a grammatically correct sentence but  

it just sounds weird it's not something natives  would you all right so let me erase this part  

and give that example and I'll cover some more  examples if you have specific grammar points  

that you struggle with let me know and I'll help  you understand them like and Native all right so  

we have incorrect English we covered that one  already now let's look at unnatural English so  

what was the example he gave me uh oh I said  so the sentence was what do you think about

increasing progress

hopefully people can read my my writing over  here so what do you think about increasing  

progress what do you think about increasing  progress now this is not grammatically  

incorrect okay so it's it's just uh it's it's  grammatically correct but it's a and it's an  

example of uh unnatural English so this word  here increasing progress we're really trying  

to understand what the student is talking  about and without a lot of information I  

only have this sentence to go by but it sounds  like we're talking about the rate of progress

because as my friend pointed out so this is  the friend who's also a teacher uh progress  

implies that something is like improving  or increasing so we're probably talking  

about the rate of progress like how fast is  something improving so if you look at like  

technology or the rate that technology  is improving over time so let's say if  

we have like a simple graph like this like  a hundred years ago and then this is today  

so over time progress is so we're making progress  but the rate of progress is much faster all right  

or it's a higher rate of progress okay so a  better word in this can you think of anything  

I'll let people think in the chat what can we  talk about like getting faster what would be  

like a really nice word for that situation and  this is another thing I'll talk about in just a  

moment about how natives think about grammar but  really the point is to understand something from  

the situation and not really think about like  what is a grammar point but what is a natural  

sounding thing that people would use in this  situation so we're looking for a word for this  

what do you think about increasing progress so  what do you think about really we're talking  

about the rate of progress or progress getting  faster or increasing over time if you have any  

said check the chat make sure the chat is working  over here oh my goodness all right we got a bunch  

of comments over here all right I'll come back  to those in a second because they're not dealing  

directly with this but just thinking about it very  quickly accelerate is a much better word for this

so what do you think about accelerating progress  

accelerating progress so we're talking  about progress meaning stuff is getting  

you know increase faster progress yeah so that's  the idea we're just looking for a simple natural  

way to say this and accelerate would be a very  common natural way of expressing that so what  

do you think about increasing progress what do  you think about accelerating I'll just make this

accelerating progress what do you think  about accelerating progress so we can  

we can have progress improving like things  are better now than they were before however  

we're measuring that but the rate is getting  faster so we just say accelerating progress  

okay now there are probably other ways usually  there are many ways to express something but  

this is just one way of doing that it sounds  a lot more natural hopefully that makes sense  

all right so there there's not a lot to  think about for making errors in English  

it's basically you're using incorrect English  or you're using correct English but it just  

sounds unnatural all right so how do  we correct this how do we not do that

the reason most people make these kinds of errors  

is because they're learning English so so this  is really the reason people make these errors is  

because they're learning English as a second  language now that means that they're trying  

to learn English through their first language  or through their native language so they will  

learn English through definitions or translations  or they will try to study some grammar rules so  

the the kind of big part of that when they're  studying grammar rules really what I mean uh  

is they're taking something like a word like they  would begin with like I don't know present perfect

and they're they're thinking more about a  grammar rule rather than trying to think  

about a situation which is what natives do  when they're learning English by themselves  

or learning English with friends or family  or whatever uh they're learning English

as a first language all right so when I'm  learning new English and I learn new English  

all the time as a native speaker so I might  read an article about some business thing or  

science or something and I'm still learning  new English but the difference between me and  

a student is I'm learning it all in English  and I'm understanding it like a native so I'm  

understanding the information without trying  to translate or add any steps into my learning  

all right so we're not thinking about like what  is the present perfect or we're also not trying  

to begin with a word like by or that or which  so the the ESL way of doing this is you begin  

with a word or some kind of whatever we want to  practice like the past simple and then we're going  

to cover a bunch of examples with that really  what we want to do is focus on a situation this  

is a really big change from how most people learn  languages but we want to begin with a situation  

like whatever if you have an example you'd  like me to to do an example of let me know  

but the basic thing instead of trying to  start with a word like buy we would begin  

with a situation let's see what did he have  let's see as an example so it's difficult

that

it's difficult that you called me it's difficult  that you called me all right so it's difficult  

that you called me again this is not grammatically  incorrect but it sounds unnatural and so we have  

a word like it's difficult so it's difficult that  you called me it's difficult that you called me or  

we can think like what would be a better word  to use in this situation but the the point is  

that we're really beginning with a situation  not thinking about just the vocabulary or or  

a single word by itself so we don't begin with  a word like by or that so we have a word like  

that here and then try to think about all of  the different uses of that we don't begin with  

the language that way because natives aren't  learning the language that way when you teach  

a young child how to speak what you're really  doing is saying hey in this situation here is  

the vocabulary we use so in this situation like  very simply if I drop something on my head I say  

ouch in if I get hurt and there are different ways  of saying that I could say ah yeah I can curse or  

I could yell or I could scream but usually it's  within a certain range of things that natives  

say and this is the same for every language so in  Japanese so I live in Japan I'll use some Japanese  

examples if I drop something on my head I say  eat eat ah but in English we say ouch all right  

so it's the same basic thing it's just for that  situation this is the vocabulary uh or learning  

all right so it's distracting that you called  me that could be a good example right there it's  

distracting that you called me so difficult sounds  odd and what we really want you to develop is that  

natural sense is called a sense of correctness and  that's where you think well that that word kind of  

sounds odd in this situation all right so we want  you to think like oh that sounds a bit unnatural  

uh and again we're learning from these situations  what does sound natural that's the whole point  

of learning English as a first language rather  than learning it as a second language all right  

now I don't want to be too confusing uh but for  this example so it's difficult that you called me  

now it's difficult that you called me we might  switch a different word in here uh like it's nice  

it's nice that you called me so  I'm happy about you calling me  

it's nice that you called all right so in in  this case it's still grammatically correct but  

this way now it sounds natural but the meaning has  obviously changed and we're talking about oh well  

thank you for calling me I'm very happy you called  me it's nice that you called me or it's good  

that you called me or we could say it's bad  that you called me so even in a negative way  

oh no it's bad that you called me because this  is a a time when I'm in a meeting or something  

like that so it's good that you called me it's  nice that you called me it's bad that you called  

me but we would not say it's difficult that you  called me because it's it sounds kind of we don't  

really understand what you're talking about do  you mean it's it's it's actually hard for you  

to like dial the phone or something or you know  it's like it's it's difficult for me to answer  

the phone something like that so there there are  different times when we would use use a word like  

if you're studying it like uh like in English as  a second language you learn the word difficult  

and then you you try to put that into different  situations but natives don't learn the language  

that way they begin with situations and then they  learn what words fit in those all right I know  

it sounds a little bit backwards and it's it's  different from what most people use but again this  

is kind of one way to retrain your mind so you're  not thinking about the language this way all right  

again we want to begin with situations and then  think about here different ways we might describe  

that and here we could have a good meaning or a  bad thing all right let's go back look at chat  

looked like we had a couple of people did say some  things okay let's see so Santa says uh watching

I'd like to ask if there is a most effective  way developing speaking skill I can understand  

everything but yes Alfredo's asking so what I'm  teaching you right now is the most effective way  

which is English as a first language so rather  than learning English through your native language  

you learn English the same way a native does  all right and what's great about what I teach  

is that you can do this no matter where you are  even without having a speaking practice part so  

the point is really just to understand the English  language so well that you use it without thinking  

all right uh so it's distracting that you called  me yes so we can use that example uh but I'm not  

fluent in English Okay so is there any Technique  we can use to be familiar so again the idea is  

to understand I'll give you some more examples and  we can cover more if you have more questions about  

specific grammar rules or words but the the basic  idea is that the ESL approach is about learning  

vocabulary and then trying to get lots of examples  of that but in the efl approach what we're doing  

is we're looking at situations and seeing what  words do people use in that and the reason we  

do this the reason it's so important is because  you might have a word like by and it's actually  

got lots of different meanings so it doesn't make  sense to learn a meaning we don't begin with the  

word by and then try to learn all the different  uses of buy it's just going to confuse you this  

is not how you learned your native language this  is not how we teach our children for English  

speakers or really anybody else what we do do is  in certain situations he here are the words that  

we use all right it's really that simple so we  begin with a situation and then we think about  

the kinds of vocabulary we might use for that all  right let's see nice to see you again let's see  

familiarize uh okay so hopefully that answers yes  so nice wonderful perfect those are all examples  

you can use in this situation as well Raphael says  hey Drew could you put out fluent for live video

down those conversations uh but you're actually  you're kind of learning to like build up your  

ability to understand the English and really learn  the vocabulary very well so that when you get to  

the conversation you actually understand things  but you can learn more about that by clicking on  

the link in the description of this video if you'd  like to learn more but there are sample videos of  

things but the kind of tricky thing about the  program is that you can't really have a sample  

of one you can't like have a sample of the whole  thing because all of the pieces work together it  

would be like asking for a sample of uh I don't  know like a sample of like a car engine but like  

just a piece of the engine the piece of the engine  doesn't doesn't really show you anything it's how  

the whole thing works together and this is why  like if you're trying to learn a new word I could  

even give you lots of really good examples  about vocabulary and help you understand it  

but you really need that naturally varied review  which I'll cover in this video and that's helping  

you understand it like a native but talking about  things in different ways so I want to again as an  

efl approach so English as a first language I want  to help you understand situations and then get  

lots of naturally varied review related to that so  we would have what do people do in this situation  

so you learn different vocabulary you might hear  it from different speakers so those speakers  

would have different accents this is all very  kind of common everyday stuff that you do when  

you're learning whatever your native language  is so you would hear you know you're watching a  

TV show and you would have a couple of different  people talking about a topic and they each might  

talk about it a little bit differently or their  voices are also a little bit different so it's  

really just the natural way that you would learn  a native language we've just systemized that uh  

to making sure that people can actually follow  it nice and easily all right let's see here uh

to have for one situation two wrong sentences  and two correct sentences for covering most  

variations what do you think about this  uh I don't understand the question though  

I suggest for having one situation two wrong  sentences well I mean really if you the more  

correct sentences you learn the better you are  at understanding how things work uh and that's  

what we try to do so I I give you there's like  tons of examples of incorrect English all over  

the place obviously people might not know why it's  incorrect and that's partly what we're doing here  

trying to show you some things are incorrect  grammatically incorrect and some things are  

actually just unnatural so they sound they sound  funny or like that word doesn't really fit here  

even though grammatically it could fit in that  place and so when you're learning English as a  

second language you usually make those mistakes  because either you're just using the the language  

incorrectly and that's often because you have  that kind of grammar Construction in your native  

language so you might make a mistake about  something like it's natural in your language  

but it's not natural in English all right  or it's incorrect in your language but not  

correct in English and then the unnatural thing  is really because people don't get enough natural  

examples of things where you really can understand  lots of natives talking about something and see  

what natives are describing things as all right  so I'll give a few examples of that but hopefully  

that makes sense all right uh let's see can you  learn more English from you every time your word's

Sam is back I want to learn how to learn I feel  like I'm not learning things or I feel like I'm  

not learning things the right way I'm not talking  about only English but basically anything in life  

yes I I think that there are a lot of people we  can talk about this in a much bigger way uh I  

think yeah a lot of people maybe they're they're  confused about many things about life and how we  

should be learning but yeah it's a really good  point so not just the language here we can talk  

about that if people are interested in it but the  the basic idea just for learning English is that  

um well let me tell you like a quick story so  there were there was a uh a book that I I loved  

reading when I was younger I was called the uh  actually I still enjoy the book now I haven't  

read in a while it's the richest man in Babylon  the richest man in Babylon and I actually have a  

video on my channel talking about that book  and it's just talking about uh like finance  

and and like you know how to live a good life and  different things like that but what's interesting  

one of the the core principles of the book is  that you should learn something from people who  

are good at that Fame so if I want to know how  to bake bread I should go to a baker I should  

not ask my friend who doesn't know anything  about baking about how to bake bread but a  

lot of people they ask advice from people who  aren't experienced in that thing so if you'd  

like to know more about money you should talk to  people who know about money or if you'd like to  

talk about fashion or whatever talk to people or  meet people who know something about that so look  

for people who actually understand what they're  talking about about a particular thing and you  

will get advice better advice much faster all  right so not to be uh a little bit tricky about  

this I want to make sure people understand this  let me go back and give another simple example

again when you when you're  trying to learn things uh  

uh yes you're very welcome so when you're trying  to learn things like the a way to kind of get  

your mind unstuck or to stop thinking like a a  native or a non-native like an English student  

uh is you have like I gave the example  before about the Apple's Farm the apples  

so let's say we we've learned something the the  English as a second language way and we're going  

to look at like okay what's the difference  between like four oh now we're going to do

like of and with and again I don't recommend  people learn the language this way this is  

about this is the way I have to teach to kind of  correct people who have been learning language  

learning English the traditional way and I  will also say as I usually do that it's not  

your fault if you've learned this way this is  just really it's basically the way everybody  

teaches the language it's just learning as  a second language so if we have an example  

so my friend who's the teacher he gave me  this example of uh so like uh like I took  

I'll I'll change the example slightly  to make it simpler I took a picture

of him and so we have I took a picture  of him and then I took a picture with him  

so if we're going to just compare the differences  often Learners are asking like they're they're  

thinking about they're trying to think about the  the word they're beginning down here instead of  

thinking about the situation so here's the  situation up here here's the word down here  

all right so it's the same thing the whole  sentence is the same but only this word is  

different so I took a picture of him and I took  a picture with him all right so just to make this  

clear we'll draw a picture up here so I have a  picture so this is of so this is me here I'm I'm  

uh kind of like holding a camera say that's a  camera up here and there's my friend over here  

I'm not a very good artist but you get the idea  so here here is me so I took a picture of him I  

took a picture of him but if we're doing with we  change the meaning of the sentence here completely  

so this is me uh and him so there's us together I  got my arm around my friend I say hey how are you  

you know and so uh we're taking a picture and so  there's someone else taking a picture of us all  

right so I took a picture with him he and I are  in the picture together I took a picture with him  

but here I took a picture of him okay now this is  helpful if you're if you've learned like okay the  

the traditional way where you learn a word like of  and then try to learn all the different uses of it  

but we don't want you to learn that way we want  you to begin with the situation and then hear how  

natives would describe that so oh look this guy  is taking a picture of that guy taking a picture  

of that guy but these two guys are are with they  are with each other so I'm taking a picture he is  

taking a picture with that other one okay so it's  a it's a completely different meaning but it's  

much better if you begin with the situation  and try to understand the situation and then  

learn the vocabulary rather than trying to guess  which word is correct all right see roses show up  

versus show off so those are again like you've  got you've got show show up and then show off

completely different words but most people will  think like okay what's the difference between show  

up and show up and they're just looking at the two  different words when you can you can understand  

these These are both phrasal verbs to show up  means to appear hey I just I was gone before  

what now I showed up so I'm here I'm appearing  and to show off means to do something uh like  

where you're trying to show other people that you  are important so I'm showing off like showing off  

uh maybe I can I can stand on my head and and  still drink some water or something like that  

all right so this is where when when people  are trying to trying to compare different  

words like this it's much better to understand it  by the situation so in my visual guide to phrasal  

verbs I actually help you do that by looking at  the situation and talking about uh we begin with  

uh basically a word and really just focus on that  for that situation so you might have take or show  

or go or another word like that but we're really  trying to understand it from the situation okay  

so hopefully this makes sense uh the whole idea  here is that we begin as as a learner of a first  

language you see something so there is there is a  situation happening and then we try to understand  

what words or what do we hear natives talking  about so what did natives say when they describe  

this situation so I took a picture of that guy or  I took a picture with that guy all right and it's  

much easier to understand if you can contrast uh  these different things especially if you're still  

learning it uh the traditional way all right  I don't want to go uh too deep into this but  

really the general idea is English as a first  language versus English as a second language  

and the more you learn as a first language the  faster you become fluent okay if you have any  

questions about this let me know let's see well  it's taken about 30 minutes so far but I will  

take any questions uh that people might have about  this all right so Alicia Begins the problem for  

me is when I know how to say I can't write but  when I know how to write I can't I can't read  

that's interesting I can't even read that I have  trouble reading these tiny comments over here uh  

often you know people depending on how you learn  so for for my example learning Japanese my spoken  

English is or smoke spoken Japanese is much better  than my writing or reading ability and that's just  

because I've learned like a child rather than  learning like an adult so now I'm going back and  

practicing you know reading and writing that kind  of thing which is especially in Japanese helpful  

for speech but uh if you have problems with like  one skill versus another one then just focus on  

that skill that you're missing this is what  I talk about uh when I say that it's actually  

possible for you to improve your your speaking or  your communication without learning new words and  

grammar because what most people do is they're  trying to learn more and more vocabulary even  

though they might be weak in the real skill that's  holding them back so they might know only a few  

I don't know like let's say their confidence is  very weak so they might know a lot of vocabulary  

but they're unable to express themselves so it  just depends on what your specific issue is but  

no matter what the issue you should be learning  like a native rather than like a student all right  

let's see all right I think somebody asked me what  the weather is like in Nagasaki today it's cloudy  

like about should be about 50 degrees today so I  have my uh I just have a little light hoodie on  

today got my there you go I'll teach in a young  Skywalker Skywalker I won't be the be the the uh

you really drink some water standing on  your head I don't know I've never tried  

doing that maybe I'll make a video you  know I bet if I made a video where I'm  

drinking water standing on my head  that would be my most popular video  

it's like if I just want to make popular  videos I just make some random stuff like that  

all right my English is getting better since  I've watched your videos I'm grateful for your  

dedication uh uh oh well it's my pleasure glad to  hear azab says hello Drew I'm one of your most uh  

so one of your most supports uh you can say I'm  one of your biggest supporters if you say if you  

want to say that and I recommend you to every one  of my friends who wants to learn English in the  

right way glad to hear it also this is another  thing like to do something to do X the Great way  

so we don't say do it in the right way we just  say do it the right way do it the right way so  

you don't need in do it the right way and this  is again one of those things the more time you  

spend just listening to natives talk I promise  you you don't get fluent by repeating words and  

phrases you get fluent by listening to Natives and  really getting lots of understandable messages and  

getting that naturally varied reviewed so I think  somebody asked me uh was that was that maybe I  

forget somebody asked me about that earlier about  naturally varied review but basically what you're  

doing when you're learning English as a first  language is you begin with a situation so maybe  

we're talking about something or uh it could  be just like a situation again like I hit my  

head or what do I do when I order some food at a  restaurant and then we learn the different ways  

that people might talk about that and then we  also might learn like the different accents  

that people would use that vocabulary or or how  different people might say that and as we get  

all these varied examples this is where we really  develop the fluency down here so we really feel  

confident the more we know about the language  so as we learned I had I had like a weird idea  

um do you know do you know there's a like a story  or kind of uh I don't know what you would call  

like a parable almost I guess so you have like a  group of Blind Men uh just blind people and you  

have a like an elephant that would draw like  my my goodness all right here's the elephant  

so this is an elephant over here and so  imagine some different blind people so that  

like there's like a blind person here trying  to touch the elephant a blind person over here  

trying to touch the elephant a blind person  up here blind person over here and they're  

all trying to describe the elephant and each  one of them describes it in a different way  

so they each have their own kind of unique  perspective based on where they touch the  

elephant so this guy like the elephant like an  elephant tail is like kind of long and has a  

few little hairs on the end of it like that so if  you touch the elephant tail you're like wow this  

animal is kind of strange it's got like a long  stringy tail with a little hair on the end and  

this guy might say wow this is very big or it has  some some funny ears or something but each one of  

these people is correct but the problem is they  don't have like the whole picture of what they're  

talking about so my job is really to be like the  person explaining the elephant and say look it's  

like this and this and this and this and so you  can think about naturally varied review in this  

way as you don't just learn like one vocabulary  word or one example we have a bunch of different  

things and as you get all of these then the the  true picture becomes clear and so the point of  

language learning to become fluent is to really  get a strong idea of how the language works and  

then then you really feel very confident and  that's when you start speaking so most people  

are very nervous about speaking if they're not  confident about the vocab they are like the person  

who knows a little bit maybe I heard some one  word over here but I can't remember the others  

or something like that I don't really know what  something means and so that's when people struggle  

hopefully that yeah it makes that makes sense over  there uh let's see all right noelie from Nicaragua  

uh Rafael asks does visual guide to phrasal  verbs come in fluent for Life yes it does  

fluent for Life comes with everything so if you  want to get everything uh get fluent for life  

all right let's see when I try to stop thinking  uh when I let's see when I try to speak I stop  

thinking of the translation from my language yes  that's the goal so you should be trying to think  

in English and it's okay to think before you say  something I mean even I will think like I don't  

know if like this is a good way to express  it or something I can usually do this very  

quickly but I'm not translating in my head when  I do that so even if I'm speaking in Japanese I  

don't do that either so I'm not thinking I mean I  might think in Japanese about like is this a good  

way to express it or something but usually I can  do that quite quickly but again the point is to  

do it without translating because you don't like  when you learned your native language you didn't  

need any translation to do that your parents  didn't teach you whatever your native language  

is through some other language uh let's see azab  again says I'm okay I think I did that one already  

uh donius is Hello from Morocco and I see you  okay Alicia again because my first language is  

Java second language is Indonesian then English  but now more English is from you by listening to  

your video all right well great all right let's  see yes so Rafael again it does come with the  

program uh when speaking is it really stressful  to keep thinking is this expression correct  

ah it is yes yes that's correct yeah so that's  that's another thing if you're worried if you're  

thinking something is it correct English or is  it not it usually means you've been learning  

English as a second language rather than  hearing examples so anytime if we will erase  

the elephant over here usually what happens like  if you ask a native speaker say like what does

X word mean

so if you ask a native speaker and not like  a teacher or anything to just ask a like a  

just a random person on the bus hey what does  uh what does this word mean so what does bark  

as an example bark bark so what does bark mean  a native would think well it depends and they  

would give you situations when you use that word  they say well it could mean this or it could mean  

this over here so bark could be the skin of a  tree or it could be the sound a dog makes it  

could be something else if there are other words  for it and this is why natives don't learn words  

from they don't learn the language through  vocabulary they learn it through situations  

and so even when you learn a word like this it's  it's better not to ask a native like what do  

you what does this word mean the better thing is  like what do you say in this situation so what do

in X situation

now I know it seems like these things are are  similar it's like ah like situations are words  

what's different the important thing is the the  meaning of words change so words words change  

depending on the situation so it's much better  to learn the situation and just learn the meaning  

for that word and you might then learn another  situation that has a different meaning even if  

it's the same word but it's easier to remember  it this way so just like I gave the example of  

like the Apple's farm and apple farm earlier  in the video so I'm giving you two different  

situations and it's much easier to remember the  vocabulary that way all right so what do you say  

in this situation so what do you say when you  say thank you or what do you say when you I  

don't know need to go to the toilet or whatever  all right all right hopefully this makes sense  

but and and it's easy if you just remember this  is what you do in your native language so you  

probably don't ask other people like what does  this I mean you might ask what does a word mean  

but you're really talking about like how do I do  this or how do I tell a woman that I love her or  

something like that so how do I ask a girl on a  date we're not talking about the present perfect  

or the past simple or whatever we're talking about  like what are ways that people do that so what are  

the specific vocabulary that we might use for that  situation so don't worry about the grammar natives  

will not be able to tell you what the present  perfect is or the past continuous or something  

like that but they will be able to tell you when  they say something so when do you use something  

all right let's go back uh maybe hopefully I'm  not speaking too long about this stuff as I began  

I want to have the IELTS exam for immigration  purposes I don't really know whether to have  

to start preparing for the exam directly by  Cambridge books or have to use the language  

first uh I don't focus on language tests so I  would recommend looking for other people who do  

that's not my focus even though what I do focus  on which is conversational fluency so being able  

to express yourself in everyday or professional  situations but obviously if you can do that you  

will do well on a test and a lot of my students  tell me they did well because they learned with  

my lessons but if you're just trying to pass  a test just so you can like if if the goal is  

just to get like you need to have a score to get  a like an entrance into a like a university or a  

job or something like that then just focus on that  uh let's see George says I understand English much  

better than I can speak uh in my first language  I am the same situation I'm introvert yeah  

so often if you're if you have a general  problem of shyness and that's in your native  

language as well then that might not be an  issue with your language ability that's just

feel very confident about expressing yourself so  that's a different issue but typically with with  

language learning the more you feel confident  about the language that really means you  

understand the language very well so the more  you understand the language the more confident  

you feel and that's when you start speaking so it  would depend on what your specific issue is or why  

you don't feel confident but that's not a language  issue that's just a like a kind of everyday  

confidence issue all right uh you are giving  very valuable hints thank you very much Danke  

Schoen in German glad to hear it drew is it true  that you demonetized your videos on YouTube yes  

uh I did that years ago um so I it's almost like  a challenge for myself really like the only way  

I make any any revenue is if I can if I can help  people like join my programs or or get Frederick  

so I don't have anybody uh like watching videos  that's why you don't see ads in front of my videos  

so people often get to my videos and it's just  like oh look the video just started there's no  

like ad in front of the video anything now I can't  stop Google from from completely eliminating ads  

like I have to have like some kind of image ad  or something I think on some pages because you  

can't block that uh but everything else I do  so I don't really make any money at all from  

uh from YouTube ads I also think it's just like  a bad I want people to come to my channel and  

learn something and not watch random videos about  stuff but I do actually advertise my own programs  

on other people's channels so I don't want I don't  want uh like to do that to my channel so even if  

you're not paying me anything I still want you to  enjoy uh the experience but the best thing that I  

give to people is obviously in fluent for life  and in Frederick as well uh let's see here so

but I want to learn Advanced levels of English  can you tell me how to do that all right what do  

you mean by Advanced levels of English now English  teachers including myself we use this it's more of  

like a marketing term where it's just like okay  here's some really cool Expressions that you can  

learn because people want to use like interesting  Expressions I would caution you if your English  

is already really good you should probably not be  watching my videos unless you just enjoy listening  

to me speak or whatever but typically people  they're trying to learn Advanced English before  

they're actually good with their basic English  if that makes any sense so this is the same thing  

if you're trying to learn to play the guitar so  lots of people like the like in their mind they're  

thinking like wow I want to be able to play the  guitar very well so that's like here's Advanced  

we'll put an ape here for advanced level guitar  and then like starting from zero down here so  

people want to jump directly to teach me something  Advanced so I can go to a party and impress people  

with my guitar skills and it's the same thing  in language learning where like they want to  

use Advanced Expressions but often their basic  English is incorrect so I would caution people  

so I would recommend you do not try to learn a  bunch of advanced phrases unless you actually can  

communicate at a basic level so many people they  will use an advanced expression but it will sound  

unnatural because there are other basic errors  in what they write all right so if you want to do  

that this is the kind of thing we teach in fluent  for life but we make sure that you understand all  

the basics and again to cover everything in  the program we really want you to have a great  

foundation so you feel very confident about  using things it's the same thing for me using  

Japanese I really want to understand the basics  and then work up and then I might use you know  

like an expression or something like that in my  communication but it's much more impressive to  

just be correct with your English so correct  English is the most impressive thing then you  

might have like some extra vocabulary that you use  but if you can't actually speak then don't try to  

go to that extra stuff all right but again to get  this is really just to watch more advanced actual  

just watching natives communicate and you will  learn lots of phrases naturally the same way kids  

do so this is what we do in fluid for life all  right let's go back good questions everybody here

it sounds like your English is already pretty  good you would be at the right level for the  

program so if you can understand what I'm saying  but you still have trouble communicating you're  

not learning from scratch you're an intermediate  learner who just has trouble communicating so I  

like and again like from scratch that's a great  expression that's where you would learn something  

more advanced the same way a native would learn  it but fluent for life would be perfect for you  

so it's not for beginners it's for people who  already know a lot of English but still struggle  

to express themselves all right so welcome to the  real life it's really great to give the hint with  

situations yes situations are the key uh Rainier  do you recommend phrases or slang dictionaries  

to learn English uh no I do not I recommend  I'm going to put this up here I recommend  

watch very carefully here we go I'll I'll kind  of hide hide it over here I'll write the word

are you ready for this what what I kind of I  showed it showed it a little bit what word do  

you think I put up here what what do I recommend  what do I recommend so the question was do you  

recommend slang dictionaries and other things  like that do I recommend that what do I recommend  

you ready you guys are going  to love this here it is what

situations it's really that simple now like  think about the difference here like if I if  

I'm talking about no I do not practice  practice no situations are the key and  

if you think about this like if I if I had  you try to remember a bunch of random words  

uh like uh let's just say we'll just say Canada  I'm just gonna give some random words here Canada  

uh see home uh true uh and Son uh is the command

so I just have some random words up here  no it's okay don't feel bad about that  

so if I say hey I want you to remember these  words this is just like a phrase book it's like  

okay here's the word Canada okay home and true and  command I'm just giving you some random words it's  

much easier if I actually if you have a real  situation where you're using these things or  

they're connected in some way that's meaningful  to you and so in this case we might have like  

this is the Canadian national anthem like Oh  Canada my home and native like the if you go  

through the song you would learn all these and  you would remember them much more easily that way  

all right so the point is to to actually  learn these things with situations rather  

than trying to learn a bunch of phrases  so it's helpful if you learn a phrase  

so like one one thing I do uh so I can show you

so if I'm if I'm learning let's say  this is a Japanese example so this is

and so when I'm learning these things I'm actually  like each one of these it's just basically a comic  

book and so when I'm when I'm reading this I  can think oh okay like in this situation this  

is what they say or the same thing I see those  similar situations or even the same situations  

in another TV show or something like that and  that's the naturally varied review that gets me  

fluent so I'm looking at different situations  and learning the vocabulary that we we use for  

that so we begin with the situation and then we  learn the vocabulary all right we don't go from  

the vocabulary to the situation because you can't  you can't understand vocabulary without situations  

all right and and it's much more difficult  to try to remember like random uh random  

phrases or slang or something like  that it's much easier if you see  

somebody do that like if somebody  if somebody does something you know  

wrong or whatever in in a person's anger  they're like what the hell what the hell

what the hell and so you begin with  the situation you know something's bad  

happening or whatever that like okay somebody's  upset they're angry you can feel the emotion of  

that situation uh the situation here's what  happened and this is what the person said  

and so in other situations now you understand the  pattern and you will hear that again but maybe the  

pronunciation will be slightly different okay  so it might be like what the hell or like what  

the hell what the hell you can't even understand  clearly what I'm saying but you know because it's  

this situation this is what people are talking  about okay so we always begin with situations  

and this is why fluent for Life what we do is  we focus on a particular topic for that month so  

we're just talking about uh going to the doctor  we're just talking about pets or going to like  

have a relationship like or putting on makeup  or something like that or getting a haircut all  

these different things we're learning about the  specific things that people use for that situation  

and then as you as you learn more situations  then your fluency just it just improves very  

rapidly because you understand things a lot more  easily this is what it means to learn English as  

a first language you're just learning it like a  native all right let's see we've got some more  

questions over here uh all right so yeah so  like phrase dictionaries and stuff like that  

they can be helpful but you will probably forget  a lot of that information and it won't be very  

meaningful for you if that makes sense uh well  think and speak in English a lot because it's  

a habitual issue in my Spanish language country  yes so you don't like and I talked about this a  

lot uh but again you're not speaking with me  I'm not I'm not hearing you say anything you  

could be talking or not talking but it doesn't  matter you're still improving just by watching  

this video and that means that really if I can  make the language understandable then you will  

start speaking automatically that's how fluency  develops so it develops because you understand the  

language well uh not because you're like trying  to practice you know particular words or phrases  

uh uh let's see so iron fly iron fry says I  usually face hard times when I'm in uh in a  

in a when I'm in tough though wait tough I'm  trying to figure out what you mean by a tough  

discussion defending my eye okay uh defending  my point of view because I have to probably  

think I'm guessing you mean yeah so like that's a  higher level thing that even native speakers would  

have trouble with and so that just requires more  like practice and actually seeing lots different  

uh examples of that thing so the same thing with  idioms remember vocabulary is not a problem it's  

just how you learn the vocabulary so idioms are  Great Expressions are great slang is great all  

of that is fine but you should learn it from the  situation so what do people say in that situation  

that's how you learn the vocabulary so you learn  it from the situation not from uh the vocabulary  

so ilder says Drew I watch video from YouTube as  you advise and maybe six to eight hours per day  

and in different accents yes is that helping you  remember to focus on a particular topic so this  

is what we do in fluent for life if I'm trying to  do this for free like the same way I got fluent in  

Japanese it took me longer I wish I had a program  like I had when I was learning Japanese there are  

some kind of like basic things but nothing for  like Advanced the way I would the way I would try  

to learn it so if you're watching uh whatever  like it could be YouTube videos or television  

shows or something it should have a focus and  it should be about you know whatever the the  

particular situation you're interested in for your  life so if it's like growing growing uh flowers

then you should watch a bunch of videos about  growing flowers or growing roses or growing  

marigolds or tulips or whatever that thing is but  focus on that and get a bunch of those different  

examples and so you will hear lots of different  people talking about that same thing and that's  

where you really feel confident about the language  like oh yeah I heard that phrase before now I'm  

hearing it again from a slightly different accent  it's a little bit faster or something and that's  

where you really start feeling confident about it  so even if you don't speak you can improve your  

speaking ability isn't that crazy it's because  you get that from your ability to understand the  

language not from your ability to repeat after  other people all right let's see here uh as a  

begin thanks for answering me of course I want  to have a high score on the test as well as being  

fluent thank you for helping me and many other  people yeah it just depends on what your focus is  

so if you if you really need to pass a test then  just do that don't don't try to like if you need  

to learn certain words then just like remember  them it's like study like that it's boring and  

it won't really help you speak but you can pass  the test uh so Alicia says by watching you every  

time your body language is effect on me also and  my friends my English is so fast glad to hear it  

great can you recommend me self-study book uh well  I wouldn't really recommend a book because the  

point is to see people actually speaking that's  that's the whole reason we built fluent for life

foreign so if you click on the link in the  description of this video you will learn more  

about fluent for life but the point is not to get  a magazine or a book or something it's to actually  

see real native people speaking I think somebody  asked before maybe uh like do I recommend watching  

friends or other TV shows um I think friends and  things like that are great I think they're not as  

good as watching just actual native speakers in  conversations so when you watch a TV show like  

friends that's great for learning some like in  this situation people will say certain words but  

often they don't give you enough practice with  that and also because these shows are scripted  

so you might have like the the actors in a TV show  are practicing so they say their lines perfectly  

but often people in regular conversations don't  speak like that so you you have to get that real  

practice for real situations with native speakers  so you should be getting those examples all right  

uh uh don't worry me fasola first before complete  Symphony that is right yeah so I use English with  

my working team but when I have to talk about  random topics it is really difficult yes you  

know I actually I met a uh an American government  official I had a meeting I was actually invited to  

speak uh about like online stuff and English  as well that was about a week ago and one of  

the things I mentioned is that like this is a  particular problem people have where they again  

know very well about maybe their job or something  but when they have to talk about things outside of  

work that's where they really struggle so people  where they they want to take like a business  

English course what they're really looking for  is a class that helps them understand things  

outside of work so that's why influent for life we  cover like the the things that you need you know  

specific vocabulary for sales and marketing or  business communication but we also teach you the  

kinds of things people talk about outside of work  so if your co-worker you might be in the office  

but the co-worker might say uh like what did you  do yesterday and like did you see that movie about  

something so you want to be able to talk about  that that's what we teach in fluent for life  

uh let's see would you recommend for okay I answer  that already thanks teacher for your classes yo  

glad to hear it uh should I watch movies to learn  the situations thank you yeah but I would again  

like watch a whole bunch of movies about like the  same kind of thing what most people will do like  

let's say I watch an episode of France so in  in episode one so I watch a an episode about  

friends and they're talking about I don't know  raising a baby monkey or something like that I  

think that was like a few episodes that had that  so there's like the uh the monkey uh episode  

uh and then in the next episode they're talking  about playing football or something like that so  

they have a football episode now you will  have some some overlap in the vocabulary  

there like a little bit of overlap so they  might use the same phrase like hey how are  

you or how is it going or something they might  have greetings that they use but a lot of the  

other vocabulary it's it's different and  so what we're looking for is like instead  

of instead of things that like kind of overlap  we really want to have like a lot more overlap  

between the different things you learn all right  so you would watch Like the First uh let's say  

I want want to watch a nature documentary on  YouTube so here I'm still using YouTube and  

I can I can improve the same way I want to learn  about like rats so nature documentary about rats  

uh and here's another nature documentary  I found about rats also and then here's  

an additional one I found about rats and so like  a lot of them will be covering the same kind of  

vocabulary and then I'll learn a few additional  things as well but I will become fluent in this  

so you still have to go back and review this other  stuff but it's just much easier for the brain to  

review things by seeing them in slightly different  ways rather than trying to rote review them again  

and again but it's just more powerful this way  again the other reason is because it's a situation  

and we learn things from situations and really  understand how they work because we can we can  

see that and we connect it with the vocabulary  so we don't just learn some words on a paper  

we hear people talking about things as they're  they're talking about something in a situation so  

I might watch again a video about rats and then  learn a lot about rats you know and you can get  

specific about that thing too but the point is  to get not just to repeat that same video which  

is also helpful but again the naturally varied  review comes when we're trying to get lots of  

different input about that same thing that's  how you really build that fluency very quickly

what do we have here uh okay so should I I think  maybe yes yeah okay so third time I said that uh  

maybe it says uh Plaza helped uh yes that's right  you guys had that earthquake over there that's  

crazy after watching all series of Santa Barbara  you will speak fluently I suppose so you'll be  

able to speak about Santa Barbara uh thanks for  these opportunities as far as uh yeah it's my  

pleasure so a lot of people yes my English is good  I still watched your live class because you have  

inspired me that English is just a language we  should learn it with fun and not just memorize  

it yep uh do I do one-to-one lessons no I do not  uh and the reason I don't number one because it  

would be far too expensive for anybody and number  two well because I don't really have much time for  

that and number three it's just not necessary  so you don't need to have me one-on-one there  

to do anything because it's not really about  what you say it's about what I say to you that  

gets you fluent so if I'm doing a bad job of  teaching it doesn't matter if you and I are in  

the same place it's like you can have this is why  lots of people can have English lessons for years  

and not become fluent because they're they're just  getting the same kind of lessons even though they  

have a live teacher so a live teacher does not  get you fluent it's just somebody there maybe  

you can ask them questions but they're not  really improving your fluency so you don't  

need to have me there as like a one-on-one  teacher all you need to get is all the input  

for me and all the other people that I provide  in programs like fluent for life all right I  

think we're getting down to the end of this we've  gotten about an hour so far I got what you said  

thanks very much it's very easy to understand  yes so my whole goal is to be understandable  

so that you understand and that's how you feel  confident about the language you're learning  

so I talked about uh in another video recently  uh what is my name oh don't know my name Drew

so Drew is actually short for Andrew  Andrew all right uh zainab says uh  

how about learning vocabulary they get  harder when I move on in levels like A1  

may I say I'm sick and in different level with  say I'm under the weather yeah so you will again

this is the same thing you will  get from naturally varied review  

that's what that's I mean when people talk  about like A1 or whatever you might know  

a bit more difficult vocabulary but it's really  just like the common things that natives say in  

that situation so again I really want to make this  clear for people so the situation the situation  

is I'm sick so how do we describe that to other  people or if I'm watching the movie friends or the  

TV show Friends or a movie what are different  Expressions that people might say about that  

so what are things you can think of all right so  you might hear so someone just says yeah I'm sick

that's perfectly fine you can say that  this isn't bad English I'm sick natives  

will use this or they also like the example  you gave I'm I'm feeling and then you might  

have like different different ways of  feeling so I'm feeling under the weather

ath ER under the weather I'm feeling  horrible so another example feeling horrible

under the weather I'm feeling horrible I'm  feeling tired I'm feeling I'm out of it

I feel so out of it today I'm out of it now you  might think again the first thing we learn it's  

like oh okay so in this situation you can  think I'm out of it but then students are  

like what does that mean really it's like  well it just means you're you're not feeling  

very happy or very comfortable or something is  wrong so to be out of it it's like here's the  

situation but you're kind of feeling outside  of it so you might feel normally like you're  

feeling very good but today I'm not I'm not in  that feeling I'm feeling good I'm feeling out  

of it I'm a little bit out of it I'm a little bit  tired so a little bit out of it and when English  

speaking kids are learning these Expressions  they might not understand what this means as a  

phrase by itself like out of it that's interesting  like they're just like oh okay in this situation  

I can say this so they accept the vocabulary  a lot more easily rather than trying to think  

like wait a minute what does that mean like  kids don't usually do that they're just like  

okay I guess that's what people say so if you  need to have a bit more of an accepting mindset  

but you can also learn what these things  mean and try to think about them in a more  

kind of logical level and it's okay if you do  that but again the important thing is to begin  

with the situation and then think about here are  the different ways that people might Express that  

and there are there are a lots I mean there you  can you know could be a hundred different ways  

to express that and again the reason we learn  this way is also so we are prepared when we're  

in conversations and other people say something  so if a friend of yours is looking a little bit  

they're looking a bit tired or sad and they're  like yeah I feel kind of out of it and you can  

think ah maybe they're sick or they're upset  about something it just means they're not their  

usual self so I'm feeling out of the it is like  how they normally feel how they usually feel and  

so the benefit of having someone like me you know  because I know students have these questions they  

can't just accept the vocabulary they need to know  why why does it mean that and so this is again  

what we do in fluid for life so I cover everything  we want to give you situations help you understand  

the different vocabulary and actually help you  understand what those words mean so you feel very  

confident about using them but you don't need to  have a live lesson with me to get that that would  

really just waste your time you really just want  to get boom boom boom boom boom all of the input  

as fast as possible so you go through we're going  to review it now we're going to try writing some  

of these phrases down so rather than me speaking  like the same thing in Japanese if I'm trying to  

learn like a kanji or something like I don't you  know I want to like read it I want to see it on  

street signs I want to like practice writing it  myself it's like okay we got here's like uh you  

know kanji about something I might here's like  a tree or whatever and then okay I'm learning  

that and writing it and practicing it myself  getting that it still gives me some output but  

the important thing is really the input that you  get all right so I know people often ask me like  

what about like getting live lessons or whatever  but I'm reading book YouTube study home based home  

English learning home study basic basic basis  English what does that mean I'm reading a book  

it's like a book about how to use YouTube to  learn English you know I actually thought about  

making something like that I mean we already have  fluid for Life obviously if people want to do it  

in like a cheaper way it's it's possible to do  that uh but again it's just a lot more effective  

if you have someone actually knows how to teach  a language that you're doing that so you can get  

lots of input from YouTube but we'll also leave  you with questions like this so you'll be like  

why did they say that and again this is as a as a  non-native learner you will be thinking logically  

about that like what does that mean out of it  like huh I understand when people are sick they  

could be saying that but why didn't they say that  and if you have someone can who can explain that  

to you in an understandable way then you feel  much more confident about using the language  

all right so thanks a lot thanks a lot when do  you have a course for almost native speakers  

then do you have a course for all well that's  what fluid for life is basically if if you  

already are like a native speaker or already  fluent you don't need a course it's really for  

people who who want to understand how to learn  uh and and actually would like someone to just  

quickly get them fluent that's what the point  of the program is but the the language itself

you can think about the any any language really  but since we're talking about English you can  

think about it like a tree and the there's kind of  like the base like verbs and grammar verb grammar

so the the things that you might have like for  advanced vocabulary like talking about some kind  

of science thing or I'm talking about like uh  I don't know some high up thing in the tree or  

whatever like this this is not it's not like  a language learning I mean it's it's learning  

languages but natives are doing this too so if I  read like uh like a philosophy textbook I'm still  

getting uh uh like it's it's language learning  but it's it's just me learning more vocabulary in  

my native language um and I'm not I'm not like I'm  not learning any new grammar or anything like that  

so the language doesn't get infinitely difficult  it just gets broader so this example like the  

tree goes out and I'm learning like this thing and  here's like this other little term or other things  

like that where you can get very specific about  certain vocabulary but this is not if if your  

if your level is already good so you can speak  well you can understand what people are talking  

about and you feel confident then just learn the  same way you would learn in your native language  

so let's say if I'm a like a German speaker I'm  from I don't know Berlin or whatever uh then I'm  

just you know reading the newspaper or watching  TV shows in German and I'm just learning stuff  

naturally that way so my program is like it's  trying to get you to that level where number one  

I help you understand how to learn like a native  and then number two I'm actually like teaching  

you the language so that's the that's the point of  fluent for life so it's not for beginners and it's  

not for like people who already know a lot and can  understand a lot so most of the people I help they  

might they might know some of this vocabulary but  they can't use it fluently and they also have a  

lot of basic mistakes in their communication so it  means that they don't they don't really know the  

language they haven't spent a lot of time learning  the language like a native speaker my microphone  

is lower that's weird I haven't done anything  with my microphone but if I'm looking this way  

when I speak it's probably not as clear or as loud  on the microphone hopefully it's coming in for you  

guys all right uh let's see our long our tongue  twister is good for improving language learning  

uh not really yet I mean it's like learning tongue  twisters and that kind of stuff on YouTube it's  

basically a waste of time really if and again  the tongue twisters are it's like up here  

kind of stuff if you if you don't already have a  strong understanding and you can use grammar and  

your regular vocabulary is is basically perfect  then you start learning that just as like here's  

some fun stuff to learn about the language but  for me that would be a waste of time like I  

don't I don't care about learning like tongue  tongue twisters in uh in Japanese or whatever  

it's not it's I mean I know some but it's I just  you know it's it's not like improving my fluency  

um I'll make it very simple so the reason and  I talk about this in in my video about like  

the three three what was that oh if you  if you only have like 15 minutes to learn  

English so if you watch that YouTube video  it's about if you only have 15 minutes to  

learn English uh and I talk about why fluency  is a unique kind of skill so here's a like  

just example here's a tongue twister I'll  give you one in English she cells seashells

by the

by the seashore she sells seashells by the  seashore she sells seashells by the seashore  

all right now if I'm trying to teach this to you  like if this is a lesson about tongue twisters or  

something uh okay we're going to practice saying  this and okay she sells seashells and we just we  

practice and we repeat this a bunch of times this  is like learning to play a song on the guitar so  

there's a specific thing like a specific phrase  or something or sentence and you're just trying  

to practice that and repeat that again and again  but will this help you in a conversation when  

someone asks you about seashells probably not I  mean it's it's so it's just kind of like a fun  

thing to learn but it's probably wasting your time  you know uh and this is this is the tricky thing  

about education really because like you know  everybody wants to go to the high level oh let  

me say like a tongue twister but but they can't  communicate in an everyday conversation like they  

can't talk with their co-worker nobody is turning  to their co-worker and saying hey she sells  

seashells by the seashore nobody cares about that  but they do care about can you have a meaningful  

interesting conversation with that person so  language learning is unique because you have  

to be dynamic and spontaneous in conversations but  it's it's not like okay I'm learning this phrase  

and now I try to use that phrase in situations  most language most communication doesn't work  

that way it's new every time so and this is why  naturally varied review is such an important thing  

so you could even watch uh like 10 different  videos about uh uh about like any any kind of  

topic and and everyone will do it a little bit  differently even if it's about the exact same  

specific topic people will explain it differently  or use different vocabulary it's a dynamic thing  

so it's not like learning to learning to say  something like this like a longer sentence that  

you will probably never use in a real conversation  other than talking about uh I don't know like it's  

same thing in in pretty much any language that  has you know something something like this but  

it's going to be a waste of your time uh it's  much better to just get naturally varied review  

for the basics and that way you can really learn  how to use the language smoothly and hopefully  

uh that's your goal so that's what we focus on  on this channel all right uh well Elena says

let's see computer reading book learning study  home speaking English and tibetan's language  

study home study basic sentence English thinks  your teacher is so much for the teacher wow I  

don't know if that's the whole name of the book  but that sounds like a that's that there's you  

you definitely can like learn English from  home that's easy to do and again it's much  

better if you learn it the same way natives  do rather than trying to learn a bunch of you  

know like tongue twisters like this so it's  nice if you can use it but it's certainly not  

necessary uh you know some words but you just  don't know how to use it properly yes and and  

when I say like like use it properly it just  means well number one obviously you're correct  

like using the word correctly but also like  you just don't feel confident about something  

um and when you don't feel confident about  something you can't speak about it and this is  

even in your native language you will experience  the same thing so if someone told me today Drew  

can you please give a speech about how to make  uh I don't know like some how to make shampoo  

it seems like an easy topic I guess how to make  shampoo but could I talk about that no I don't  

know how to make shampoo I don't maybe put some  oil or something I don't I don't know so in that  

case it's like it's the same idea I don't spend a  lot of time learning about that but if I watched  

five or ten different YouTube videos about how to  make shampoo I could probably give a speech about  

it it's like that so you spend time more with the  language but with the real language real people  

speaking the language uh and especially everyday  like unscripted conversations that's why we focus  

on that uh let's see uh it's difficult because  many people use slang yep and so that's another  

thing the the slang actually becomes easier as you  start learning with more native speakers so you  

listen to real slang when people are communicating  and you think ah okay in this situation this is  

some common slang it's pretty easy to learn  if you're learning it like a native but it's  

difficult if you're learning it like a student um  let's see you are waste your time on that comment

that's the eye it's difficult because many  okay I had that so you were confident about  

something that's the point yes but the confidence  comes from the understanding that's the point  

all right so you don't you don't just  like feel good about the language you  

actually feel confident naturally because  you understand the language so well so if  

you don't understand the language if you have  questions about it like am I pronouncing it  

correctly uh is this grammar Point really  used in this situation that's where you  

struggle so that's why we spend a lot of time  really feeling confident and then we speak  

so you don't like build speaking confidence by  speaking I know it sounds like uh like this is  

basically the opposite information that  you've learned from almost every teacher  

uh and again the point is to understand the  language very well so you feel confident speaking  

uh let's see so zaino again I'm teaching Arabic  for beginners do you recommend using curriculum  

which are designed on levels from A1 to C2 I don't  I don't worry about any of that it's just more  

what do what do people use in a basic situation  and can you help them understand the language  

like a native and again like watching uh like an  Arabic television show for children would give you  

more similar examples about things that you could  teach again I don't know what exactly you would do  

for that but like it should be understandable all  in Arabic so that's how you know you're able to  

teach them well if you if you need to use English  to teach Arabic then you're probably not like  

you're teaching them the language but you're not  really developing fluency that's the difference

all right here we have let's see maybe you do know  how to prepare cookies yeah I well I could talk  

about baking cookies sure I know I've made I've  made lots of cookies in my life but I don't know  

how to make shampoo I don't know anything about  that I can use shampoo I can teach you how to  

use it look they you know squeeze it and wash it  there you go you're done you're done all right uh  

hi thank you for your insightful approach language  learning even though you are paying heavy price in  

terms of income time and energy you're a guy one  may come across once in a blue moon oh you're very  

welcome yeah I I think it's important especially  the people people keep telling me about the  

like you know advertising and people are always  surprised when I say why did I turn off the ads  

you'll notice on my website also there aren't like  random ads for stuff I hate that I hate even when  

I'm watching YouTube myself like it's a random  ad for something that I just don't care about  

like why am I why am I seeing this and the  reason is because like that's like people it's  

just a different business model really but for me  I really it's important to me that my teaching is  

good enough that people actually join my programs  and I'm able to to support myself doing that  

so I don't want to support myself by kind  of tricking people into watching content  

and then here's a video instead of an ad that  you don't care about so so that's why I do that  

uh okay yes I mean so hopefully you got it  now your confidence comes from understanding  

yes it's like anything else like if you if  you feel if you feel like you really know  

something well that's where you really  feel very confident about it funny funny  

funniest unfunny funniest what the what the  hell is too hard to learn language English  

yes if you make it difficult it becomes  difficult but if you learn it like a child  

every you know language learning is is it's a  it's a weird thing because it should be very  

easy and everybody around the world learns to  speak their first language it's like everybody  

does that maybe there might be a few people like  if you can't speak or if you have no mouth or  

something there's a a problem that you have but  almost everybody learns their native language  

and the reason they do that is because they're  just getting understandable messages they see a  

situation and they hear what people say and they  understand that that's really all they're doing

to Brazil hello Brazil got some friends out here  actually in Japan from Brazil uh I learned English  

from books but when I talk to Native relatives  speaking he spoke different language it's much  

easier I'm Amazed maybe I should throw the books  away books are like books are not bad it's just  

what kind of language are you getting from the  book and so most people the if I if I have like

we're gonna we're gonna put a a very simple chart  over here starting from zero and we'll just say  

like one year two year three year four year  something like that we have uh like an English  

learner like they're just kind of going through  here and this is their so this is time and this  

is uh fluent fluency or their ability to speak and  most English Learners are kind of moving like this  

their ability to speak increases slightly as they  learn more vocabulary but a native is like this  

so they're like you know and the only difference  is how they're learning and what they're learning  

so they're learning like a native and they're  actually learning native vocabulary rather than  

learning what you might find in a textbook so this  is why you get like you know like 10 years later  

the native is is like way above above the learner  so I call this the fluency Gap the fluency Gap

but the the only thing is different again it's  the vocabulary you're learning and also the way  

that you're learning that vocabulary so if you're  only learning textbook English down here then of  

course you will have trouble with natives up here  who are learning a completely different language  

it's really like a different language okay so to  get from here to here this is what we do influent  

fillet all right Maria from Morocco got looks  like look at that uh lots of people everyone from  

Brazil India Mexico Morocco we shouldn't use slang  as much as possible right no it's it's not about  

using it's just what's good for the situation  so you should stop thinking about vocabulary  

and if vocabulary is good or not it's not about  vocabulary being good or not it's good for what  

so what situation or good when so you think about  like a situation if I'm giving a speech like if  

it's a like a professional business meeting or  something is it a good idea to use slang probably  

not is it a good idea to you know use some maybe  a little bit more educated sounding vocabulary or  

something yeah maybe it could be so the slang  is not the issue and often learning slang is a  

good idea because you will hear it a lot even  if you don't use it so I'll hear some Japanese  

slang but maybe not like use it personally it  just depends on who I'm speaking with all right  

so let's see there's a lot of good uh it's a good  good questions though really I'm all these videos  

that I make it's really trying to get you to think  about language learning in a different way and I  

know that's hard because you've been spending a  lot of time learning things like the traditional  

way for many years and so it's difficult to  think like wow how am I going to get up here  

how am I going to start doing this and it's really  a simple process you just change the way you learn  

so inside your brain there's there's actually  like a fluent communication switch so it allows  

you to communicate when you understand what you  learn if you don't understand what you learn or  

if you're translating in your head or thinking  about grammar rules or pronunciation then of  

course you will struggle to speak all right  so remember the difference between learning  

we will call this English as a first language  so your first language and this is down here

ESL English has a second language all right  see if we have any more questions about this  

all right so a comment on the tongue twister  actually I practice that sentence a lot many  

years ago it is useful to reshape one's tongue  muscles so I think it is helpful one wants to  

improve pronunciation yeah it's I mean it's it's  debatable you could it's not totally bad for you  

um but certainly like they're they're more  efficient and faster ways to do that if you want  

to learn pronunciation or whatever so you could  do that there are lots of things you could do but  

it's just much faster ways to do that it really  depends on what you're interested in if you just  

like tongue twisters and greatness if anything  that will get you motivated to continue improving  

is a good idea but there are again faster ways to  do that uh let's see here warm greetings from cold

you how to do that all right so that's another  one of those things you learn it by situations  

rather than trying to uh uh let's see I've been  trying but I don't know how it really works Elena

pronunciation app something like that and you  will find instructions for Frederick but really  

you're just exploring the app and then comparing  different sounds and then getting to practice  

those sounds and you'll hear sentences as well so  it's a it's a simple thing once you start figuring  

out how it works but it's actually pretty simple  and you're just trying to explore different sounds  

so you're listening to different things and like  okay like the difference between like cat and Cat  

as an example so you can hear things like that  in the app and then you get to practice those and  

really improve your listening and pronunciation  automatically so don't be nervous about it get  

in and try to try to explore and experiment  with it that's the whole point of the app  

I'm really grateful to understand English as I  never do study enough to know about English at  

all before thank you very much it's my pleasure  may I have a quick answer on other efficient ways  

to achieve that what are they so specifically  you mentioned uh pronunciation as an example

often uh like she she sells a seashells by  the seashore that could be helpful again as  

I've mentioned before but for pronunciation  and I've talked about this in many videos but  

there are basically two things that you  really need to focus on if you want to  

become good at listening understanding people and  pronouncing the language uh first one is phonics  

so this is understanding the sounds of individual  words so like the example I just gave like  

uh cap so learning like the same way native  children learn to pronounce English uh they're  

learning to read and spell and pronounce English  all as one system like this uh so they're learning  

the rules of the language and they're learning  the rules of the individual letters this is what  

we teach in Frederick so you got app but  if we put an e on the end of this we have  

cape cape and that way it will train you to look  at words and to be able to pronounce them well  

as you learn the the vocabulary as well as  learning the rules for pronouncing these but  

then the second part of this is hearing how  words blend together so I call this the one  

rule for pronunciation I won't go into detail  because I've covered it in many other videos  

but the basic idea is that learning how words  blend together which you can get from She's  

sells as seashells but it's much more kind of  natural in the way people would learn it this way

is hearing how natives actually Express these  things in in real situations so you might have  

like that train there are two t Sounds here  and a typical learner would over pronounce this  

they would say that train that train but natives  actually uh erase one of these sounds and it just  

becomes that train so I'm leaving a little bit of  space there but not actually saying the sound that  

train that train and this is just one example  but you'll learn how this works and rather than  

trying to learn a few tongue twisters this will  build your foundation for any any speech at all  

and so again these are the the specific things  you want to learn like getting to the the root  

down here the most important things to learn  rather than like tongue twisters are up here  

this stuff is is the foundation of the language  so always focus on those things first and again  

it's not bad to do that but if your if your goal  is to get faster progress then you would focus on  

more foundational things of the language hopefully  that makes sense so these are both things that we  

do uh well we do this in fluent for life also  but specifically in Frederick so teaching you  

all of the sounds of the letters how they work  and then actually helping you understand uh how  

they work in sentences like that so it's good  again also rather than you trying to repeat uh  

like phrases or specific things if you have let's  say five minutes to learn uh you could repeat she  

sells seashells by the seashore you could repeat  that again and again or you could hear lots of  

different natives saying things that build up  your your uh your understanding and confidence  

so again it's just more efficient they're much  more efficient uses of your time than doing that  

all right so Liaisons it brings me back to the  base it really helps glad to hear yeah again these  

are all things I discovered as I was learning too  because I failed to learn different languages for  

15 years over 15 years really and it wasn't until  I discovered this stuff that I was like ah okay  

I should just learn it like a native instead of  learning it like a student and it sounds like an  

impossible thing to do and like okay well I don't  have anyone to practice with or how am I going  

to do that if I don't live in a like the country  where I'm learning but it's really just the input  

that gets you fluent so it's much better that way  all right hopefully that makes sense all right
