How To Get Fluent In English Words Quickly, Without Getting Bored

fluency guide welcome to another live video here  on YouTube uh and today we're going to talk as  

always about fluency and how to improve your  fluency faster how to learn words faster how  

to get fluid faster because we don't want to  just learn the vocabulary we want to be able  

to use it quickly as soon as possible all  right so we'll uh give a moment for people  

to get in the chat hopefully people are  here looks like we're working all right

nice to see you again it does there Ahmed is  there Chad is working on the phone fantastic  

all right this should be an interesting  uh interesting and entertaining video  

all right let me erase this quickly

I think someone mentioned before this is a good  workout it is a good workout it's like the The  

Karate Kid if you've seen that movie like wax  on wax off you know erasing the board over here  

all right uh so I wanted to make this video  because of course I always get new people  

coming to the channel and people wanting to  know how to get fluent faster we really want  

to help people understand things in English  use things in English without translating or  

thinking about grammar rules that sort of thing  uh and so I thought I would share a quick story  

and then explain how really this is a very simple  idea very simple it's so simple in fact you know

you can use these two circles here what Muhammad  says it's 3 A.M where he has subdue nice to hear  

you let's go says ildar nice to see you again  it's 4am look at everybody everybody up in  

them why is everybody up in the morning or do  you just work you work all night what's the  

why are people up right now you know thank you  for joining me anyway remember you don't have  

to be in these videos live I record them  number one just so people can have them  

and watch them anytime but number two also  to get questions uh and so if you do have  

questions you can ask them in the chat as  well so this is a really simple idea uh and  

it's a combination well actually before  I do this let me tell you a quick story  

um so my uh I was home last night or yesterday all  yesterday and my daughters and wife they were all  

out doing some shopping and stuff and going out  and having a good time I was cleaning around the  

house so kind of Summer cleaning it was a little  bit boring but you know I like to clean get  

things organized and so one interesting thing that  happened is I have you know a whole bunch of books  

and things all of my toys for my kids and I took  them and I reorganized the toys so they came back  

and the the books were in different places and the  toys were in different places and they were like  

wow look at all these toys that we have and the  interesting thing was that I hadn't bought them  

a single new toy but because I had taken their  toys and put them in different places and now they  

could see some things maybe they hadn't seen them  in a while where they see you know some books in  

a different place and now they think oh I want to  read that book you know I haven't seen that before  

so what happened uh and this is applying directly  to fluency but it is a combination of old  

and new that gets you fluent when you're learning  new vocabulary so any vocabulary you're learning  

usually what happens uh there are kind of three  different ways of learning vocabulary and we'll  

look at them right now let me make sure the  chat is still working yes I think we're still  

working on it right now of course be sure  to like this video if you have not liked

about it and help other people get fluent the  native way it'll make me feel better too well  

there goes another one yes give me the likes I  love the likes yes click the like but click it  

multiple times really tell YouTube like you know  as many times as you can all right so the three  

different ways of learning vocabulary uh you have  like the really good students over here so we'll  

just say like our like kind of traditional uh  like we'll just call them good good students

so a good student you know someone who can  sit in the library for a long time and they  

can look through their their textbook they  have a lot of patience they can go through  

and they review the vocabulary they're probably  not going to become fluent in the vocabulary but  

they will go over a word again and again and  again so these are people who will repeat this  

information yes see Moy if I'm pronouncing that  correctly you deserve likes yes I deserve likes  

give me more likes so good students over here  uh and I will just say most people over here

so most people on this side over here so good  students they will take a like take a word like  

let's say I just put and as an example like  the word a tree and they will read that word  

again and again they will repeat it they will  put it on a flash card they will memorize that  

vocabulary but they are what I would call good  students because this is typically what people do

you work are you working right now  let me know you should be working  

you should be it's like 10 o'clock you should  be working right now if you are you know in a  

job or something all right so most people uh  yes you have a bad handwriting no you would  

say you have bad handwriting there is no uh  bad handwriting you just have bad handwriting  

actually today it's not it's not so bad  you can read that old new good students  

yeah good students well so this marker is  really thick look at the tip on that all  

right yes also uh says like the fried star good  student always gives his teacher some likes yes

oh very good yes Sunday okay hello do you have  a course yes uh you can click on the links in  

the description to learn more about those if  you'd like uh I'll come back and explain more  

if you have questions about that but I just want  to talk about this uh first of all so again just  

to review a good student what I would call a good  student you know a teacher likes that student they  

can sit in and study words they might not get  fluent I want to like just because you are a  

good student doesn't mean you will get fluent  so lots of students they learn and they study  

but they still don't become fluent okay and then  you have most people who are always looking for  

new vocabulary so this person sees the word  tree look at the tree and then they think  

well I already know that word so let me go on to  the next word over here and we learn Park uh and  

then we learn cash and then we learn something  else so most people are always interested in  

doing something new all right so their mind is  always interested in looking for new information  

they want to find something new but the sweet  spot now this is a really great vocabulary uh

actually I would say instead of vocabulary  word it's a phrase but what we want to call  

The Sweet Spot yes or keep quiet  the handwriting yes so the sweet

The Sweet Spot Now The Sweet Spot this is a like  a perfect example of something a native expression  

people would use where like it's not too hot not  too cold it's just right so the sweet spot like if  

I'm playing baseball if I hit the ball at the end  of the bat so if I'm swinging a bat like this if  

I hit the baseball at the end of the bat doesn't  feel very good if I hit it up here it doesn't feel  

very good but right here I can hit the ball very  well this is The Sweet Spot of the bat all right  

so the sweet spot for getting fluent is right  here it is a combination of the old and the new  

all right so just like I gave the example of my  daughter's uh I took the same toys and reorganized  

them so I put them in different places I took  the same books and reorganized them I put them  

in different places all right so when they see  the books again wow like everything looks new  

and it keeps them interested now the reason this  is important is because you must review vocabulary  

if you want to get fluent but the important thing  is how you review the vocabulary all right if we  

only take old vocabulary and just repeat that  again and again it's going to take a lot longer  

to get fluent and we probably won't get fluent  in that vocabulary because it's not preparing  

us for real life so we need to be prepared for  the real mixture and the variety so we can have  

actual Dynamic Communication in conversation  okay and if we only learn new information all  

the time then we're not reviewing anything so  if I watch lots of random Youtube videos here  

are 10 phrases about this and 10 phrases about  that and this and that then I'm not actually  

remembering anything so I might have uh like a  passive vocabulary but I'm going to have trouble  

with developing fluency all right but The Sweet  Spot all right the exact sweet spot is right here  

we have a combination of the old with the new all  right so it's a combination of the old with the  

new and this means we take vocabulary we already  know and we learn it in different ways all right  

Joseph says how can I Implement your method with  chat GPT all right so as an example just asking  

about how we would implement this with chat GPT  we want to make sure that we we get whatever the  

vocabulary or the grammar or something and then  we get lots of different examples of that thing  

all right get like a hundred different examples  of the same grammar Point all right so we want  

to make sure we review review but in slightly  different ways and this is why I call it naturally  

varied review you've probably heard me use this  before again I repeat myself but I want to say  

things in slightly different ways so naturally  make sure that's fitting there varied review

so naturally varied review is in here okay so if  we just look at vocabulary like some word and we  

just repeat it over and over again we don't  have any newness to that vocabulary it will  

be very boring all right and if it's only new  vocabulary we won't remember that vocabulary so  

we want to take this and there are of course lots  of other good reasons to live in this sweet spot  

of vocabulary learning but the most important one  is this gets us fluent the fastest so this helps  

us learn new vocabulary and review it in different  ways and that's how we can use it fluently so it's  

just like me taking my daughter's same toys  same books and just organizing them putting  

them in different places that's one example I'm  rearranging them and they think wow look at all  

these new toys we have just because they haven't  played with some toys in a while and so they go  

through different Cycles we actually take away  some toys put them in a box or something in a  

different room and then maybe maybe a month later  we will bring those toys back and put them back  

and now they think wow look at all these new toys  we have so instead of going out and like getting  

new toys all the time that's a smart way to like  I mean not only does it save money but also I'm  

just I don't have to worry about them like I don't  know thinking about new things all the time they  

get smart about new ways of using old stuff okay  and so this is your kind of way of tricking the  

human mind tricking your own mind into getting  fluent faster all right so let's look at uh so  

again an example of this with chat GPT and I just  want to say that chat GPT is going to be good for  

giving you lots of examples of things but Google  can do the same thing so if I just search like a  

particular grammar point or vocabulary something  like that can say it uh Fusion yes it's kind of  

like a mix or a blend or a fusion of these two  things a fusion to fuse these different things  

so if I'm using chat GPT that's really going to  give me text examples and maybe I can get some  

like robots to read that speech in different  ways I mean you could kind of do that but it  

probably wouldn't sound uh as natural as you  would hear it in a real conversation and you  

also can't see people speaking so there are  limits to what you can do with chat GPT but  

certainly chat GPT is great the same way Google  is for getting lots of different examples so  

I don't want to just repeat the vocabulary by  itself like on a flash card I want to get lots  

of different examples of that thing so if I have  a word like I don't know tree or whatever then I  

don't want to just repeat that again and again  I want to hear that in different ways okay it's  

more formal for chat GPT yes and so like you will  get clear pronunciation and they're good examples  

uh and you can also I mean I would I would prefer  Google actually because I know like just to make  

sure chat GPD isn't making any mistakes with what  it gives so it could give you some mistakes or  

it could say something that maybe people don't  don't use but I can also look for recent common  

examples so if I go to Google and I'm trying  to learn like like let's say uh just whatever  

some useful vocabulary uh let's see so let's say  I I learned the word I'm I'm reading or I I'm  

an English learner and I hear the word trounce  [Music] t-r-o-u-n-c-e trouts now you might not  

know this word this is one of my favorite words in  English I just think it's an interesting sounding  

word oh no I gotta sneeze oh no oh no it kind  of went maybe it will come back I hate when  

that happens you gotta sneeze and it like and you  kind of lose it we'll see so to trounce something  

now if an English learner gets the word or they  see a word like this and they don't know what it  

means they have two options they can look it up  in a dictionary and you could look it up in an  

English dictionary or in a like you know whatever  your your like your native language if you want  

to get a translation of the word or you can get  lots of examples all right and so we have a word  

like trounce and I put this word into Google and  I could say like uh like examples of trouts in a  

sentence and I just type that into Google itself  and I can also search by most recent examples so  

like examples in the past month or in the past  year or something so I want to see if people  

are still using the vocabulary how people are  using the vocabulary uh so again like chat GPT so  

someone else just said chat GPD does make mistakes  like it can make mistakes and of course you can  

find mistakes on Google but as I mean usually it's  from like real people making examples of things  

and the point really is not to check just like one  source Google is great because it's going to give  

you a bunch of different examples from different  places and so trounce means to like destroy  

something badly but it's because I've gotten  many different examples that I recognize that so  

I watch uh or I watch a video and word trounce is  used in that it's like a guy an announcer talking  

about a boxer like one boxer trouncing somebody  else like he really beat that person badly okay  

or one team trounced another team and you look  at the score it's like 13 to one all right so  

if the if the score is like five to four you're  not trouncing the other team but 13 to one wow  

you're really beating that other team badly and  it's with again we're having a combination of  

the new with the old so we're looking at the same  word but in different ways okay Fusion it's like  

a music style yes so similar to that again we're  taking two different things and mixing them but  

the interesting thing about language learning is  that we can't just take vocabulary and repeat it  

again and again that's going to be a very uh long  process if it gets you fluent and for a lot of  

people it doesn't and often they just maybe they  will learn a new word and review it very little  

so they will maybe repeat that word a few times  and then they will move on to something else okay  

but hopefully this makes sense so I wanted to just  make this video very quickly I'll answer questions  

for people as well if they have them but the  secret here again is the sweet spot for vocabulary  

learning so if you're learning uh whatever it  could be pronunciation grammar vocabulary all  

of these things you get them by reviewing so you  take something new or you make something old make  

it new okay so if I get like some new vocabulary  I want to I want to kind of make it old for myself  

by reviewing it in different ways and the same  thing if I have some old vocabulary I want to make  

it new by let's see alloy well yes again you could  have like uh I don't know what you would what you  

would call for this but it's just a blend of these  two different approaches all right so the only way  

to keep it fun and fresh without you getting bored  is to make something new but if it's only new  

then you're not going to remember anything  because you will learn one word not review it  

and then move on to something else remember  that how you learn is how you speak and the  

important thing for vocabulary building is that  it's not how many words you know it's how well  

you know the vocabulary okay how well you know the  vocabulary so as I always say remember that many  

young English-speaking children they don't know  a lot of vocabulary but they still communicate  

fluently because they get this all right they  get this combination of the old and the new  

all right let's see now let's go back and answer  some questions uh this is not really a complicated  

idea but it's something that people need to  be reminded of because again they either are  

doing like one of these two things as they learn  either they are only doing kind of the old way  

and they're trying to learn stuff and and force  their brain to remember it or they are only just  

getting lots of new vocabulary and they're not  reviewing anything so that's why they're not  

becoming fluent in that vocabulary so when you do  either of these two things that's when you also  

start thinking through grammar rules or thinking  about hesit or translations for both of these so  

if you don't know the vocabulary very well then  you will start translating when you speak because  

you don't know the vocabulary very very well and  if you only review it again and again you won't  

be prepared for when you have this in uh in real  conversations all right all right let's see here  

go back and answer some questions all right yes  so unit says uh you're definitely right a good  

student uh definitely could not be fluent yes  and so you you could I really want to make this  

point because you can be a good student but not  become fluent okay and you can uh and it's a it's  

a different process when you're reading or writing  or even listening to English and this is why you  

can take a written test uh and still get a good  score on that but have trouble in conversations  

because you don't have time to think you need  to just respond automatically and correctly so  

last night actually uh in the evening so after  I had done all this cleaning I went out uh with  

my wife's uncle so I hadn't seen him in a while  we hadn't gone out but it was great and so I'm  

sitting there having you know a conversation with  him in Japanese all night we went to another place  

uh after that and I was speaking more and I'm  not thinking about English when I do that and and  

they were actually asking me about that they said  are you thinking in Japanese and I said well I'm  

thinking in Japanese but I'm actually not really  like thinking that much I'm not actually like  

planning what I want to see I'm just responding  to what you guys are talking about but I'm not  

getting stuck in my head thinking in English all  right so when you're communicating confidently and  

fluently it's because you're in this sweet spot  you've reviewed the vocabulary enough to use it  

without thinking to use it automatically without  hesitating without Translating that kind of thing  

all right so let's go back and answer questions  and see if anybody let me know if this if this  

does not make sense all right it should be a  pretty simple idea we want to combine the old  

with the new so you should know but based on  how you're learning there's only really three  

approaches all right so either you're trying to  be a good student and review things but you're not  

getting enough variety so maybe it feels a little  bit boring for you or you're still not getting  

fluent because you're not actually getting the  variety you need or you're just learning a bunch  

of new stuff because you're always interested in  something new and then you still don't recall that  

information when you get fluent and then the third  option here is the sweet spot where we want to  

take something old and new combine them together  to review things in different ways all right uh  

okay let's keep going here uh I was just joking  because the uh okay like I can't read I don't  

I can't read Arabic unfortunately it would be  an interesting language to try learning though  

all right uh Ashley said I've started listening  to audiobooks after just 20 hours I can see my  

progress especially vocabulary glad to hear it uh  how is your fluency coming along I often recommend  

people don't just listen to a bunch of audio  books like they should pick something shorter  

and that like you should kind of get focused  on a particular word or phrase or grammar  

Point whatever so you can become fluent in that  and then you move on to the next thing and then  

get fluent in that one so if you're listening to  audio books and you're not becoming more fluent  

you should focus more all right it's the same idea  here so if you keep listening to new audio books  

but you don't go back and get any review of that  information you will improve a lot you will learn  

more vocabulary but it might not make you fluent  in that vocabulary so just be careful with that  

all right uh let's see Bayou  says hi Drew could you explain  

the difference between find out and  figure out ah okay uh we'll find out

if you think about it both of these  phrasal verbs so if we have find out

so find is the key word here and figure out

figure also the key word here so find out and  figure out again both of these are phrasal verbs  

when you find something out it means you discover  it all right so you can imagine like I'm looking  

around something and look what did I find like I  found something you know there's something buried  

like what's that under here well I found a marker  all right so I found something physical so we can  

think about finding it that way and when you find  something out usually it means like you discovered  

not something physical but you discovered some  kind of information you learned something so  

that's when you find something out all right  figuring when you figure something this is talking  

about numbers or calculating something we're  thinking about something so maybe I'm spending  

time like a friend of mine gives me a math problem  and it's like you know two plus eight less than  

four x equals you know whatever so I'm trying  to think about that I'm trying to figure out the  

problem I'm trying to figure out the problem so  this is more like thinking about solving something  

but we can use both of these in a similar  situation so like oh I found out the solution I  

mean you could say that you would more like in  this it's more about just finding we wouldn't  

typically use find out a solution so some some  non-natives might use that but that would I mean  

you could grammatically say that but it would  be awkward and unnatural we would just say to  

find the solution all right so in the case of a  math problem I'm trying to find the solution or  

I'm trying to figure out the solution because I'm  trying to solve something but if I'm looking for  

something like I discovered oh I learned some  new information I found something out so I'm  

looking for something and I want to make sure I  like discover that all right but maybe I'm just  

out looking around and like oh like I found and  found like you know some some new information or  

I learned something uh interesting maybe I was  not expecting to do that so today I found out uh  

that I have a brother like I just like learned  that I just learned that information I didn't  

figure that out someone just told me that all  right so my mom said hey Drew uh just letting  

you know we you actually have a brother and well  wow okay I didn't know that I'm 42 years old I  

didn't know I have a brother so I found that out  all right but if I figure out that information  

it's like I'm maybe finding some clues or using  some information to get that idea so maybe my  

mom says like I overhear I hear her saying hey  like you know we should tell Drew about something  

and I'm like huh like okay what is there maybe  there's a secret or something what's going on  

and I hear different people talking like yeah  here like there's another person in the family  

that Drew doesn't know about and so I'm like now  I'm trying to figure out what the solution is so  

I'm trying to solve a problem because I've  got like a math problem here I've got some  

pieces of information and I want to figure out  the solution okay hopefully that makes sense  

all right uh let's see here all right uh but all  right we got that one why are you telling me for  

standing up says John I haven't got any work which  is worthy of doing what does that mean all right  

Mama says can you add an organized playlist from  beginners to Advanced levels uh I did that already

beginning learner I think like best beginning  grammar or something like that but if you go to

so interestingly I wanted to make software before  making YouTube videos or any kind of video because  

software is is easier for you to control all the  learning but people didn't have smartphones and  

things when I started making videos so I just made  videos instead and then made software after that  

all right let's see is creating a lot of sentences  with Target vocabulary helpful will it help me to  

get fluent yes absolutely and so that's that's  part of this idea here so I want to focus on  

a particular word and then really get a lot of  examples to help me understand that all in English  

because you're looking for what I call the aha  moment it's where you understand something you're  

like ah now I know what that means so often you  will get one or two or three examples of something  

and maybe you don't really understand and that's  when you need a translation that's where you're  

looking for help like a grammar explanation or  something but if you get enough examples to where  

you you actually feel comfortable and confident  and you really understand it aha now I understand  

what that vocabulary means or the grammar or  whatever that's where you start using it fluently  

all right so the tricky thing about learning is  that you can learn if I can if I if I give you  

like one example then you probably won't remember  it or really understand that but if I give you two  

examples and then the third and fourth and fifth  and keep going then you will then you will after  

a while because of all the examples again it's  the combination of the old and the new so it's  

not just getting new word new word new word we  want to have an old word in a new way all right

uh okay hopefully that makes sense  but yes that's that's the way to do it  

uh let's see pal says is it truth so  you would say is it true that you can  

improve your accent by putting a pencil  on your mouth when you speak in English  

what like what like this or like that what do you  mean is it true that you can put you can improve  

your accent by putting a pencil on your mouth  while you speak English I don't know maybe that  

there's like a certain I don't know like a ooh  sound or something I don't know what what you  

mean by doing that but for actually improving  your pronunciation just like this I don't want  

to hear only one teacher say something again and  again I want to hear a combination of old and new  

so I want to hear five different native speakers  saying the same thing that's going to improve my  

listening and also improve my pronunciation  because usually what happens is people like  

English Learners will only get a single example  from one teacher so they go to their English class  

and their English teacher says something very  clearly very slowly and maybe they're not a native  

speaker so they're not getting a native natural  pronunciation of that but if you hear 10 different  

people say something that's that combination of  the old and the new so the old is the same phrase  

the new is 10 different people saying that  it's the combination of the old and the new

all right uh Joe says and what about old-fashioned  words is it worth learning them because I like  

to read books EG uh like Edgar Allan Poe but  sometimes I find very formal and literal words  

yes it just depends on what you're interested in  learning and lots of people still read old you  

know old books like Shakespeare or Edgar Allan  Poe or other people like that and you will also  

learn a lot of like the kind of origins of some  words so Shakespeare created a lot of vocabulary  

so you can learn a lot of vocabulary that way too  Eunice says can we say to figure out a problem or  

to figure out a solution are both correct uh  yes well I mean you would say to figure out a  

problem would mean more that you you realize  you have a problem but you would figure out  

a solution meaning you solved the problem so  again to figure something out means like you  

have usually some information uh like some Clues  like if I'm doing a math problem like it's like  

two plus y equals three so I need to figure out  the solution I have some information already  

all right if I just get a math problem that's  like X Plus y equals z i mean I'm not there's  

nothing to figure out because it could be  anything really it could be like one plus  

one equals two or three plus three equals six  or whatever all right so I can't really figure  

something out but if I have some information  already I've got some Clues now I can figure out  

the solution all right but typically finding out  usually means you just like discovered something  

maybe there wasn't like some work all right  but when you figure something out remember  

figuring means you're you're spending time uh  trying to solve something you're you're doing  

some work but when you find something out  you're not you just kind of get information  

someone tells you something or you discover  something like that does that make sense all  

right so that you could use these in a similar  way but like they are actually quite different

uh let's see okay and Alejandra says hey Drew  what's up bud I'm doing well how are you buddy  

tiger sport how are you doing over there you  got to learn those like English English casual  

greeting things Eunice I'm trying to figure out  how this machine works yes so in that way like  

you've got some information about the machine  you're looking at it you know maybe you push a  

button over here over there and that's how  you get something to work so you're trying  

to figure out how it works okay so you're not  really trying to find out how it works to find  

out means like maybe you would you would like  hear that from somebody else someone else would  

tell you about that but to figure it out is like  you're looking at the clues or information you  

have and trying to get the solution from that  all right uh and also I will be grateful in  

this case you would say I would be grateful  because you're talking about something in  

the future so I would be grateful if you answer  the following question uh should I focus on one  

word a day or deep learning of more words is  also fine uh the you don't have to have like  

a like a system like that the point is to get  to the aha moment if I learn a new word and I  

understand it immediately then ah like now  I got it all right but if I if if sometimes  

it's a new grammar point maybe It's tricky  because it's different from what I usually do  

um then like maybe I need to think about it in  a different way or spend more time so it it just  

depends on the individual word or phrase I haven't  given this example in a while uh but I'll give you  

an example of yes so the the Eureka moment maybe  some of you if you have been following me for a  

while you will know this example this is my  favorite example of the aha moment thank you

but this should make it more clear rather than uh  like the typical way of like well give me like I  

need to do it specifically do I need to review a  word a hundred times to remember it or just once  

or whatever uh it depends on the word all right  so let's look at this like let's say this is my  

favorite example for giving the aha moment if  I'm going to teach an alien language so let's  

say I'm going to teach you the numbers in an  alien language if you have seen this before  

don't spoil it for people it's a great thing to  give them that aha moment when they see how it  

works so I'm going to teach you the numbers one  two three four five six seven eight nine and if  

I want to teach you these so these are like the  Arabic numerals you already know what these are  

but if I want to teach you the new numbers in an  alien language so I'm going to give you like this

you know try to write those very neatly so  now I will give you uh maybe 10 seconds to  

see if you can memorize these and then  I will give you a quick quiz about that

go ahead and see if you can remember  remember all of those examples and  

then I will give you a quiz for that five  four three two one all right gonna erase it

all right now I'm going to give  you a quick quiz let's see if you  

can translate those numbers that I just gave you

can you translate that do you remember which  is which now this is an example of how people  

normally teach languages so they're going to  give you an example of something you already know  

and then we're going to just translate those and  hopefully you remember that but it doesn't really  

give you the aha moment you're not like I get it  like I really understand how something works okay  

can anybody translate that does  everybody remember what numbers these are

I'll give people a second in the chat even if you  

only know one or two no way I  can't remember says Blackbeard

anyone else can anyone translate all these how  many do we have one two three four five six  

seven eight nine ten numbers let's see three five  let's see what people have here so we've got three  

what do they say 3 8 5 8 what  was that three five eight seven  

three eight five a seven and then what's  the bottom one in the last Knight written  

Hebrew teacher yes so I it kind of looks like  Hebrew a little bit yes the last one is seven  

this one is seven yeah so this one is seven two  all right now the interesting thing about this  

example is even if you remember what these  are it's still using a lot of brain power  

and uh by tomorrow you would probably forget  them okay so seven is interesting it kind of  

looks like a number seven okay and and so you  might take some time to to think about what  

these numbers are but it's much easier if you get  that aha moment and you're like ah now I get it I  

understand how this works all right so let me  do something again we're going to leave these  

up here actually uh I'll just tell you what  these are so anyone remember what this one is  

it's going to be eight it's going to be three two  I think we have nine right there all right so this  

is not Hebrew this is just uh I can't write Hebrew  I don't know Hebrew but this is again an alien  

language that I just made up for this example all  right so if we go through here you'll notice like  

oh look at that like some of these are the same  if you can remember one like oh that's seven it  

kind of looks like a seven but if we look at these  I'll put the numbers back up here so here we go

all right so a looks like Arabic huh yeah it's  interesting I'm sure there's some overlap between  

these all right so here's where the interesting  thing is I'm going to give you the aha moment  

right now watch this it's actually pretty cool  so if we look at all these numbers over here

do you see it

you feel that did you feel that in your mind  where you're like ah I got it everybody getting it  

all right so we have number one right  here number one number two number two  

number three number three number four number  four number five number five like that Sudoku

all right Mr Mario I understand now okay so now  that you know this you can easily take this and  

and think like ah okay like now I can figure this  out so I could I could put 100 numbers over here  

and now you would be like now you're  basically fluent in that and this is a  

little bit different from like being able to  communicate without translating or something  

because I'm I'm basically giving you a mnemonic  so this is a way of remembering the vocabulary  

but it's okay to use these for something  like writing but the reason I'm giving you  

the example is just to show you uh there's a  feeling you get when you understand something  

and when you understand something in a new  language in that language not not by Translating  

that thing then you feel really good like oh look  at that like I got it okay so when you hear a new  

word you might not get it at first you might not  understand that thing and so the the thing you  

might want to do is like uh get an example from  uh from like I don't know like a translation or  

a dictionary definition or something but you're  not really getting the aha moment you're kind of  

cheating and you know you're cheating because  you feel it in a conversation when you're not  

very confident about the vocabulary so I want  you to feel very confident and now like if  

you had to write all these down on a test you  would get a perfect score because you had the  

aha moment you understand how it works all  right so it's the same way just like going  

back to our example before where we have  a connection between the old and the new  

be old in the new so o l d and n e w old and  new and that's how we get fluent so we want  

to wait uh if we just get a like a new example  of vocabulary or grammar or something you have  

to have a little bit of patience because you  probably won't get it immediately it always  

takes more than one example almost always  sometimes you will get it immediately but  

especially if it's a grammar Point that's a little  bit trickier for people it will take more time  

all right so hopefully that makes sense all  right let's go back answer a few more questions  

let's see what we had here all right uh let's see  all right so mama said I have already done the  

whole playlist already also you can make playlists  basically the stuff we have on our Channel you  

have like the basic information uh that helps you  understand things all in English and then most of  

the vocabulary beyond that is kind of like this  video where I'm taking uh more natural giving you  

more natural examples and helping you understand  those things and using that vocabulary but then  

the highest level is what we have in fluent for  life where we really want to take you to the  

native level to to the fluent level so you can  understand things and communicate like a native

English the native way and actually it's it's  more efficient than the native way so it's kind  

of better than the native way really um but the  more native examples you get the faster you get

can't read the Cyrillic uh Mahmoud said I think  he means mouth apart exercises yeah I have no  

idea but I mean there are lots of ways to improve  your pronunciation if you've ever seen the movie  

like The King's Speech I think they put like some  marbles in his mouth or something try to make him  

pronounce things but it's much easier if you get  lots of different examples okay so I I need to  

get uh like different examples from different  people and if I can do that like hearing 10  

different people say you know hello how are you  so maybe a young child is like hello how are you  

how are you you know it's going to be higher  pitched it's going to sound a little bit different  

um and and each person I might hear like a deeper  voice from somebody else the same kind of thing  

all right so if I get those examples uh and then  the other thing I want to do is what I call sound  

transitioning so if I if I hear a note like Ding  and someone's telling me to try to find that note  

on the piano I'm probably not going to find that  note if I don't know the piano very well so I can  

try to listen like ding like here's like and I'm  going to maybe try some different keys until I  

find that note and that's how sound transitioning  works so instead of like Ka I might say like

I'm I'm continuing to make the sound  as I move my mouth in different ways  

until I find the right pronunciation all right

and and okay all right so tomoko says what  is the most difficult grammar people use in  

the conversation the most difficult grammar uh I  don't know I mean I think some grammar is easier  

for different people so it's it's it's a  hard thing there isn't like I don't know  

maybe some like potential like or talking about  the future or unreal something and also yeah it  

kind of depends it's I don't know I don't know  if there's like the most difficult grammar point  

or something old books provide the origin  of actual words says uh I know no me oh yes  

let's see Aces what do you think of certificates  for teachers like Celta or Delta and so forth and  

do you have any of them no I do not uh so I don't  I don't I'm I don't claim to be like I don't have  

a Masters in Education my bachelor's degree is  in philosophy actually but I know how to teach  

people and so teaching is like actually getting  people fluent and that's how I can get myself  

fluent get my kids fluent and all the people who  watch my my lessons and so like for learning to  

have a certificate in teaching I think I don't  know I would imagine a lot of them are it's  

like getting a masters in in teaching it's still  probably teaching people the traditional way so I  

thought I don't need to get a certificate to teach  people the traditional way I'd rather teach people  

the way that I actually get fluent in languages so  I don't know much about certificates and I don't  

have them myself let's see uh apparently it's  called the pen trick it's used for your tongue  

to get a full mechanical movement and speaking I  don't know something like that all right well I  

don't know search on YouTube for that uh why  I forget many words that I know when I talk  

with anyone what can I do to figure it out is  using that word figure out again so the reason  

you forget vocabulary is either because you've  just taken some old vocabulary and studied it  

you've tried to repeat that or you only get new  vocabulary so the people who forget vocabulary  

or they can't use it confidently and fluently it's  either one of these two groups but the people who  

remember the vocabulary here in the oh no the  sneeze not only left me again oh my goodness

so those those two sides I'll draw  this a little bit bigger for you

so remember we have our two  approaches here we have the old  

and the new so whenever I hear people  saying hey why do I learn words but  

I can't remember them in conversations it's  usually because you don't really review that  

vocabulary so you're only getting the new  all right so this is where you forget words

all right so over here you might remember the  vocabulary but you're probably not hearing it  

well in conversations because people will  pronounce things differently than than what  

you have like in a classroom or in an English  lesson so even my lessons right here even these  

kinds of videos this is where I'm speaking more  slowly and clearly so you can understand what I'm  

saying but it will be different from how people  actually pronounce things in in real conversations

uh uh okay

all right pardon me as I go back and read all  over these over so far says I am following you  

and I understand all the words you said but  I have trouble in talking how do I solve this  

problem again look at this like this these  two circles right here this is everything  

it's like a very simple way of explaining  and understanding this but either you're  

not getting enough review and variety so  you're not getting enough new information  

if you only study old stuff and this one you're  not getting enough review all right so both of  

those things by themselves just learning a lot of  new vocabulary isn't going to help you get fluent  

you need to review that vocabulary so you  can use it well that's the that's the secret  

so tarek says I believe figuring out something  would involve thinking rather than finding out  

which would involve yes that yeah that's what I  was explaining yeah so Ahmed says I am great in  

listening however I have an issue can you give  me some advice probably you mean speaking yes  

so like if you're good at listening but you're  not getting enough review that means that's what  

you're going to uh you're going to have that  problem with not being able to communicate  

there's no way I can't even remember okay  you're talking about the example okay  

all right everybody's understanding though all  right drew that was a clever method I'm pretty so  

I'm glad to hear it all right the palace is how  many phrasal verbs should someone learn with uh  

ha moment and everything to be able to use  naturally in real common situations all right  

remember that there's two different things one  is how one is the specific vocabulary and the  

other is like how much vocabulary you know but  remember you get fluent in individual words and  

phrases so I could teach you like here's a phrasal  verb right here take off so I took off the cap  

all right so take off the cap so we begin now you  have like you take like a word like uh so take off

and now so that's a new word let's say that's  a new phrasal verb for you but we also want  

to combine it with the old meaning we need to  review it in different ways so I can take off  

the cap I can take off my shirt I can  take off uh you know my my hat or my hair  

or something like that I can take off like  if I can run like right now I'm taking off  

bye bye it's time to take off so I'm leaving in  that situation and so you you hear like all these  

different related examples of take off and that's  how you remember it and then you become fluent  

in take off all right so it's not like you need  to know 352 phrasal verbs to get fluent you get  

fluent in each phrasal verb as you understand it  so maybe one phrasal verb you know it fluently you  

can use it fluently but another phrasal verb maybe  you cannot and another one maybe you cannot but  

each individual one it's like checked yes I got  that one no I don't understand that yet yes I got  

this one but no this other one I don't understand  yet so you would want to go back and review these  

in different ways until you understand what they  are until you get that aha moment where it's like  

you burn something into your mind ah now I got it  okay so don't worry about the number of phrasal  

verbs the point is just to get uh the information  and learn it so you understand each individual one

okay uh trouncing example of aha moment  yes so right there so when you understand  

something like when you learn a new word you  can either get a definition or a translation  

or you can get lots of varied examples and  that's how you understand it in English  

all right do you mean after the aha moment  I will be able to extract words uh with ease  

during conversations yes so when you when you  feel like ah like now I got it you still might  

like maybe need some review but the the aha moment  is that's like 90 of it because the understanding  

is what lets you use something fluently like  when you really understand something well  

did I get a cold no I didn't get a cold but I  think I have like an allergic allergic reaction

to something it might be Dusty in here or whatever  also I was cleaning all my like my room yesterday  

and it got really dusty in there but I'm not  sick right now no I'm feeling good all right  

let's see and by the way my name is uh Petro  okay uh like Peter okay gotcha yes and like  

this interesting thing about like the like  the Cyrillic right it's like why it's like  

the N is like a p and the p is like an  r and then like we take the things and  

switch them all around all right uh and no  Amin Mo wait I'm gonna I'm gonna get this

I don't anymore do you believe  it is necessary to move abroad  

to an English-speaking country to speak  fluent English no all right but why why  

why is it not necessary to do that  uh let me give my reasons over here

all right so the question is do you need  to live or do you need to move abroad to  

become fluent so no my answer is no it's  the number one reason is so lots of people

so do this so lots of people live in  English-speaking countries and do not get fluent

and don't get fluent all right and the other  example I mean I could list even more but the  

two main ones are there are lots of people who  live in their native country and don't move to  

an English-speaking country and they become  fluent okay so we have the opposite we have  

two of these things like uh for example me  here in Japan I have many friends who have  

been living here longer than me like 20 years 30  years living in Japan and they still can't speak  

very well it's not living in the English-speaking  country or whatever like in my case being in Japan  

that gets you fluent immersion isn't what gets you  fluent it's actually understanding each of these  

individual words and phrases and grammar points  that gets you fluent and as you get fluent in  

each one of these things if you watch little kids  this is what they're doing they're getting lots  

of naturally varied review lots of understandable  messages from their parents and because they hear  

all these things that's how they get fluent all  right so it's not where you live it's how you  

learn that gets you fluent so don't worry about  living in an English-speaking country uh if you  

don't live in one already all right so when I  when I became uh fluent in Japanese like I had  

been living in Japan trying to study I was like a  good student you know practicing every day reading  

and writing and everything uh and for a year  I still I couldn't speak Japanese any better I  

was still really frustrated but when I started  learning like a native so I started learning  

Japanese as a first language that's a little bit  more clear than saying learning like a native but  

when I was learning Japanese as a first language  that's how I got fluent all right I want to learn  

professional medicine words any suggestions I  would look for that specific information you can  

probably find it on YouTube so look up probably  like videos about Cardiology or Dermatology or  

whatever the the particular medical field is  and you will find lots of videos about that  

but the key is to get naturally varied review  so you want to watch like 10 different people  

talking about surgery or 10 different people  talking about you know like heart fixing or  

you know whatever that thing is but you want to  get lots of examples that's how natives learn it  

all right uh talking about grammar it says pow  would have has been very difficult for me to  

understand yes so like I would have something  and there can be different different examples  

like like I would have done something uh in the  past so yesterday like I would have gone to the  

park but I had to clean so I would have done  something like that was I wanted to do that I  

would have done something but you know I've had  to clean instead so I would have done something  

all right Danielle says hi good evening teacher  give me a brief explanation why I understand  

English very well but don't speak as good as  listening uh and to even speaking every day with  

my husband um You probably just don't understand  the vocabulary as well as you think you do  

and you should you you will know this uh because  you will be fluent in some vocabulary and not  

others okay so remember that you have an  individual word or a phrase or a grammar  

point or pronunciation or something in each  one of these things you were either fluent in  

that or you are not so either you understand  it well and you use it well or you do not  

and when you're in a conversation you're  taking these things and putting them together  

okay it's like a chain so I made a video about  that recently uh but each one of these things  

is a piece in that chain and if I'm not fluent  like I could be fluent in this and fluent in this  

but oh no like I don't understand the grammar  very well that will break the whole sentence  

so we say in English and maybe you have something  similar in your native language so a chain  

is only as strong as its weakest

link

weakest weakest link so a chain is only as strong  as its weakest link so if we look at this like a  

chain we've got three chain links these two links  could be very strong but if this link is weak and  

it breaks easily then the whole chain breaks  so we always have to look at what is the what  

is the real problem with communication like I know  this word and my pronunciation is good but oh no I  

don't really understand the grammar Point like  would have it's like I can't I can't remember  

how to use would have in a sentence so that's the  problem it's not the vocabulary or what you or or  

how you say something because you have all these  uh these other things just fine the problem is  

this and so we always want to look at the weakest  link and solve that problem we want to figure out  

okay so first we want to like find out or figure  out what the problem is okay so I'm searching this  

is okay this is okay so this is this is the issue  right here okay and it's different for different  

people so some people maybe they know grammar  very well but they don't have a lot of native  

vocabulary okay or maybe their grammar and their  pronunciation is fine but you know something else  

like they they can't hear very well they're  bad at listening or something so you have to  

find for you what this thing is but you become  fluent in individual words and phrases as you  

learn them so you don't you don't get fluent in  English you get fluent in little little pieces of  

it little phrases or vocabulary uh grammar points  pronunciation but as you learn more you start like  

look at that now I'm filling up this whole  thing and now I can say I'm fluent in English  

but we we just we say I'm fluent in English  but what you really mean is you're fluent in  

a lot of these pieces of it and most people  don't know the whole language so here we have  

so native speakers they know maybe this much  of the language and this much they do not know  

so most of the language they don't know but  they speak fluently for this information here  

okay so that's how the how it works so if you know  information but you're not using it fluently you  

have to think where am I getting stuck you have  to figure that out to figure out where you're  

getting stuck okay so is it my vocabulary and you  can do this even on an individual sentence or an  

individual word if maybe you're not pronouncing it  correctly so if you hear something like I I think  

I've told this story before there is at the train  station near my house there's an announcement for  

uh like a toilet and I understand generally what  what they're saying but I can't hear the word and  

so I was like what are they saying and like I was  I was really trying to listen very carefully and  

I just couldn't hear what the word was and so  I asked my wife I said what is that and she was  

like Ah that's like like and I was like ah okay  now I understand what they're saying and after  

my wife says that now it's actually clear what the  announcement is saying and this is an interesting  

thing about language learning where like our  expectation that that changes what we're getting  

from like the other person so even if we speak  clearly like I could be a learner of English and  

I'm speaking with a native speaker if they think  I don't know a word then they won't hear that word  

it's an interesting interesting thing about like  the psychology of that all right I'm talking about  

this too much but hopefully this makes sense  so if you're in a conversation or you're trying  

to speak there is usually the the specific  problem and you can figure out what that is  

to figure out what that is you hear I'm using that  naturally varied review I'm trying to give lots of  

examples of figure out okay so you're trying to  solve that problem find whatever the problem is  

and once you do that then that's when you can  start speaking fluently so fluency comes from  

understanding something very well and then you can  just use it without thinking that's how it works

um

think it is true that it is better to write by  hand than computer if I want to write sentences  

to learn vocabulary uh I think like for learning  English yeah I mean I would write it by hand I  

think it's more important not for like learning  the words but for learning grammar writing by  

hand uh so the same thing for me learning  Japanese like I could type out Japanese  

kanji but I'm not going to remember them very  well it's much better for me to write them down  

by hand but for English you'll you'll learn  the spelling better if you write it by hand  

and also the grammar and the structure for full  sentences because it slows the language down and  

it makes it a little bit easier to review  that way uh Anna from Spain started four  

years ago from scratch just listening YouTube  videos I understand 80 yet uh unable to speak  

a word yes and so we're going to have another  example here like you're probably getting a  

lot of like you know depending on what you're  listening to you're not getting enough review  

of the vocabulary so you're getting a lot of  either old stuff like too much old or too much  

new you got to be just right it's like the story  of The Three Little Bears you know that one like  

dad's bed was too hard Mama's bed was too soft  but the baby bid that was just right just right

okay do you have I answered that one already all  right that's the difference between take and oh  

what's the difference between take and bring  it's just your perspective uh so if I'm if I'm  

here and I'm holding something I will I will like  I will like bring this with me but I could also  

it's just here let me let me draw a picture now  remember you can use something like take and bring

and they can basically mean  the same thing but like the  

the Nuance is slightly different so if I'm here

so this is me and I'm holding let's say  I'm holding a cup all right or whatever  

that is I don't know what that is I'm holding  something and I'm talking about like being here  

and like going to that place I  could talk about like I'm taking  

I'm taking something with me all right to talk  about like I'm kind of going from here to this  

location over here now bring is basically the same  thing I can also talk about bring uh but it's like  

I'm kind of thinking about like from this  position and I will like bring it here so  

take is kind of like from here and moving that way  and bring is like I'm kind of thinking about the  

destination and like bringing it with me all  right now natives are not thinking about the  

vocabulary this deeply and some people might even  disagree they're like well wait a minute if I'm  

taking something it's basically the same thing  but yes so you can use both in this situation  

all right so in this situation where I'm  moving something from one place to another  

so I'm taking something from here like I'm right  here and I'm going to take it over here so I'm  

moving it from one place to another but if I'm  bringing something it's kind of like yeah I'm  

thinking about the party or the place where I'm  going and then I'm going to carry that thing to  

this point okay so that's the slight Nuance in  that if you ask natives they might think about  

it that way but that's just for this situation so  if I'm talking about a train like I would take a  

train from one place to another but I can't like  bring a train unless I have a toy train I'm going  

to carry it with me okay so it's it's it depends  on the situation and then you learn things you get  

fluent in that vocabulary for a situation so now  I know the difference or I can understand slightly  

take versus bring for me carrying something or  moving from one place to another take versus  

break but a train like we can just say like I take  a train I take a bus I take an airplane something  

like that going from one place to another okay so  it's a similar idea like I start here and I go to  

some other location but I don't bring a plane with  me like unless it's a toy plane and I'm carrying  

it along and that way it would be like this  okay all right all right good questions though  

uh let's see what time is it for you Venezia says  uh if you're asking me it is what time is it 11 06  

a.m here in Japan all right uh I appreciate your  lessons it says array Vibes only glad to hear it  

hey says this is awesome to hear but I think your  teaching approach is not totally random or without  

Basics I mean it's so practical and fun so there  must be science behind it or you're the first  

to adopt no like this is the way you learn your  native language I'm not I didn't create anything  

new I know it like it sounds like this is a new  amazing method I discovered but it's not it's just  

the way you got fluent in your native language  all right so how we learn is how we speak if  

we learn through translations then we will think  about translations when we speak it's like it's  

just a very logical process so I mean if you want  to learn about like the science or the brain like  

how the brain works there are lots of things  like that you can study but the basic idea is  

that how you learn is how you speak and so if you  learn English as a first language you will speak  

English as a first language rather than trying  to learn it like through another language and  

then translate and think about grammar rules and  that kind of thing when you speak all right so  

just to prove that you can do this so number one  you're already doing this in your native language  

but number two you're also like  learning multiple first languages  

in your native language all right let  me just make this clear for everybody

so let's say let's say my native language is Thai  and I'm just writing that because it's short so my  

native language is Thai I might learn different  ways of speaking with different kinds of people  

in Thai so I'm a Thai person and I speak Thai  fluently and I might speak with like the president  

of a company one way I might speak with more  formal language I might talk with my friends more  

casually so I'm using like different vocabulary  or I'm not speaking very clearly the language is  

actually different or uh I could be speaking even  with a child in a different way so like a mother  

like a Japanese mother they would say like like  like the word foot that's not a very good foot but  

like it's a foot so the word foot I'll just put  foot over here so a Japanese word for foot like  

for regular people is like Ashi so my my foot  but like for maybe a baby you'd say like anyo  

it's a diff it's a completely different word but  we're talking about the same thing but it's for  

a different person but you're fluent in all of  these different things so it's like this is like  

a sub language all right and you will also have  things where like it's you get fluent in your uh  

like the technical vocabulary you need for your  job so maybe I need to talk about like if I'm an  

airline pilot I get fluent and it's still in Thai  so a Thai person who is an airline pilot learns  

the vocabulary for flying an airline and they  might actually learn some English too I think  

you have to if you're flying internationally but  again like that's getting fluent in this specific  

vocabulary that other people don't know so like  a baby doesn't know airline pilot vocabulary or  

maybe your friends don't know it or maybe your  boss at some other company doesn't know that  

but you get fluent in each of these things  so it's one language and you become fluent  

in each of these sub languages okay and that  means you can also become fluent in English  

all right so if you can if you know Ty that's  your native language and you learn all of these  

the only difference is you learn these as a first  language so first language first language first  

language first language but wait a minute  now English is a second language why there's  

no logical reason to do that they're all first  languages if you learn them as a first language  

okay so you get fluent in this one fluent fluent  fluent but this one oh no you're not fluent in  

English why not it's just because you learned it  as a second language rather than a first language  

okay hopefully that makes sense so I'm not I'm  not claiming I made any special you know like  

special method or anything like that uh this is  just how you got fluent in your native language  

all right uh pay attention to keywords uh  why people use the word therefore instead  

of so it's just another word you can use you  know all right uh Miguel says with all respect  

uh-oh whenever I hear with all respect I'm gonna  hear I'm going to hear some problems here we go  

when you invite anyone to learn foreign  language as a first language you miss to  

mention that when you stepped uh this way you  weren't the complete zero in Japanese well uh  

um I basically so what happened with me learning  Japanese is like I came to Japan and I started  

learning it as a second language so I didn't know  any Japanese other than like a few words before I  

came to Japan so I arrived in Japan and I thought  oh now I'm in Japan now immersion will start to  

transform me into a like a native Japanese speaker  or whatever or a fluent Japanese speaker but that  

didn't happen all right now if I'm taking like  like regular classes like I did I tried doing  

that but it didn't get me fluent so I was learning  the language but I wasn't developing flu fluency  

that's the difference and for this method it  doesn't matter if you've already been learning  

English for a long time so what I'm doing usually  for the people who watch my videos they've been  

learning English for months or years so they  understand a lot of English but they're not  

communicating fluently and it's because they've  been learning English for many years as a second  

language rather than a first language so we have  to retrain we have to change their brain to start  

learning English as a first language and that's  how they get fluent all right hopefully this is  

making sense so it doesn't matter if I had already  been learning some Japanese already like so what  

you know lots of Japanese or lots of English  speakers uh have been learning English for years  

and they still can't speak if you look at the chat  in this video the same questions I've been asking  

it's people who are like hey I know a lot of  words but I can't speak and so it doesn't matter  

if they've already been learning that that's like  the point of this video is you can be learning a  

language but learning a language doesn't make you  fluent in that language it's only if you really  

understand the language like a native that's when  you can uh when you can start using it fluently  

all right that's a good phrase though like  with all due respect with all respect all  

right Danielle says thank you very much uh Bruno  says hey Drew just got here hello everybody  

Pell says can phrasal verbs be used in a formal  conversation like when you answer uh yeah so you  

can use like I will like yeah you can respond with  uh with phrasal verbs it just look look at the  

communication you're getting from from the other  person kind of model that so if the other person  

is being very formal then you should probably  be formal too but it depends on the situation  

psychotic American teachers back my boy Drew how  are you buddy I'm doing excellently let's see do  

you know Vaughn method uh no I don't know what  that is grab ring take all the same yes so you  

can use those things in different situations  but like the Nuance will be a little bit a  

little bit different so if I grab something  it's like I'm I'm making some kind of motion

let's say there's an object  right here I am walking  

so as I move well at this point I grab  that thing and then I bring it or I take it  

so at this point here I'm grabbing and then  okay I'm going to bring or tape okay so they're  

slightly different it's not like grab doesn't  mean bring or take it just means you're like  

it's that moment where you connect with something  and then you can take it with you or bring it with  

you all right so be careful and the reason I  go into detail about little stuff like this is  

because you know it helps you understand it like  a native you're like ah okay like I could grab  

something you know and in that I can have like a  physical thing too like I grab this marker so I'm  

walking this marker is on my hand I walk by grab  it and I bring it with me or I take it with me  

all right so I could grab lunch same  thing so I don't like physically like  

grab the lunch and take it it just means  usually I'll like eat it kind of quickly  

all right well that's an  interesting questions today  

let's see so grab is like pick up yes so you can  you can grab something but I can grab a person and  

I'm not like picking them up somewhere I'm just  like holding on to it or if I'm on a train or a  

bus and there's a little pole for me to hold on to  I can grab that thing I'm not moving it anywhere  

I'm just holding it to grab something all right so  this is why we really want to understand words and  

we understand words better as we get more examples  okay so when you only get one example or you get a  

translation of something that's where you're like  ah I thought I understood but now I understand  

better so it's more examples the naturally varied  review again we have something old something new  

we combine them together get lots of examples  and that's how you get fluent in that vocabulary

uh okay so grab a cup of coffee with you bring  a cup of coffee with you most likely the same uh  

nope so if I'm at home I can bring a cup of coffee  from my house but if I grab a cup of coffee like  

I'm you know the cup of coffee is somewhere and  I'm either going to get it or maybe like I I pick  

it up at my house or I pick it up at a coffee  shop so these are slightly different things  

okay grab and bring or take so grab again doesn't  mean movement okay all right uh let's see yes so  

in my native language we have a baby language  too yes I mean every every everybody does that  

all right uh uh let's see so tomorrow says thank  you so much it's my pleasure is it got fluent or  

became fluent you can use either one of those both  of those are fine all right the brain is like a  

sponge that needs a soap input to work properly  actually you don't really need soap for a sponge  

a sponge just like sucks up stuff automatically  but yes I suppose you could put some soap on it  

so Ishmael says Drew you are such a powerful guy  I've learned a lot from you lately glad to hear it

says I'm curious about this one Drew why you  would say why do some people or why don't some  

people care all right so for both of those so why  do they care or why don't they care so much about  

the ways of learning just doing their studies  in English they get very powerful English uh it  

would depend on the person I guess I can't make  a like a claim about what other people are are  

doing but typically if you're becoming fluent  it means you're getting lots of examples and  

helping you or and those examples are helping you  understand the language so you can use it fluently  

that's usually what happens like very very rarely  would someone only study a textbook and then be  

prepared for real conversations that'd be I would  I would I would I would be very surprised if I saw  

someone do that like they're by themselves in like  a just a small house or studying at their desk and  

they they read a bunch of uh like textbooks or  something like that or even like actual novels  

or something if they're able to teach themselves  the language and understand that and then still be  

prepared for real conversations uh and one reason  it would be difficult is because the pronunciation  

is going to be different you need to get examples  of people actually saying things so I would I  

would be surprised uh to to find somebody like  that but if you know somebody maybe it's possible

early morning in Zimbabwe all right what  is up for grabs up for grab so up for grabs

this is something we used to do in like elementary  school as little kids so I would say like who  

wants uh who wants this candy I'm holding up  like a lollipop or something like that so you  

have a little kid and he would hold something  up in the air here's like a piece of candy or  

something and other kids would say oh me me  like I want that so it's up for grabs like  

it's available for anyone who wants to take that  thing so up four grabs because multiple people  

might try to grab that up for grabs all right  now bonus points if you know what the opposite  

of that is so in in again this is like a cultural  thing you learn but it's learning the vocabulary  

as well so up for grabs we're making something  available what is the opposite of that I'll  

see if anybody in the chat knows and I'll  tell you the answer if you're interested  

give people a moment to see if they can figure  that out so what is the opposite of up for grabs  

did you also grab something for me yes so again  like the moment of of touching something and  

pulling it with you okay I'm grabbing something  and now I'm bringing it with me but in general  

we can just say yes like I'll grab some milk  from the store it means I will like grab it and  

bring it back that's the meaning of it but I can  just say yes I'll grab some milk I don't mean go  

to the grocery store and just hold the milk at  the grocery store I mean bring it with me okay  

yeah all right textbooks are not enough yes  so we need to get lots of real native examples  

that's how you get fluent Benicia says I have been  learning English for two years preparing to take a  

test I put a lot of effort in grammar uh and some  listening practice I forgot some things and can't  

speak well fluently Yes again like you have to  think about the specific pieces of the language  

as you learn them you are going to get fluent in  some things and not others and so for those things  

that you do not get fluent in you have to just  spend more time with that vocabulary or whatever  

clicked the button yes so call your friends  and neighbors and say watch this video where  

is my team from Peru I need all my Peruvian  students to click the like button all right  

Venezia says should I study all over again I was  studying with lots and lots of phrases you should  

pick one thing whatever that is like look at the  vocabulary you know so if you have a like a list  

of vocabulary uh you can you can look at like  uh do I know this word okay yes I don't need to  

review that again do I know that word can I use  it fluently in a conversation yes if you cannot  

then get more examples of that thing until you  can use it fluently all right uh okay galactines  

is loving your class it's very inspired you could  say it's uh you can say it's inspiring or I feel  

very inspired from a China new guy you would say  you were Chinese or a guy in China you could say  

that but thank you very much Bruno says the word  bound it has a few meanings like it's bound to  

happen or bound up with someone I found out the  other day it can be used suffix like School bound  

yes is it common yes and something can also Bound  by jumping like that like the rabbit was bounding  

something all right and this is why it's so  important to get lots of different examples  

and understand these examples in context so it's  a situational thing vocabulary is situational you  

don't just learn a word like bound you learn a  word Bound for a particular situation so like  

someone like the child is bounding in the  park so wow he's like jumping jumping very  

high jumping very far are okay or this bus  is Bound for a particular location so you're  

you're learning the word but you're expanding your  understanding by getting these different situation  

situational examples of that thing all right  so that's why we don't just take a vocabulary  

I'll give this example again remember so  English has a second language English has  

a second language we take vocabulary like  in the English word and then we just kind  

of get a translation from our native language  or we get a a definition something like that a  

grammar explanation but in English as a first  language which is what I teach so English as a  

first language so we hear like an English word  but where do we hear that it's a situation so  

there's this like this situation and maybe  there's a different situation and another  

situation over here and then for each of those we  get even more examples to help us understand that  

so like the word Bound for example it's  like we're looking at that like as going  

to a particular place so this train is Bound for  wherever I am Bound for greatness so like I am  

like a I am going like going to be a great thing  I am Bound for greatness that child is Bound for  

Success all right this company is going places  it's bound to do well okay so as you're hearing  

these different examples that's when you  become fluent in the vocabulary so spend  

more time it's the combination of the old with  the new if you only get the old or you only get  

the new you do not get fluent fluency is in The  Sweet Spot of the old and new together all right

uh I got that one us see like do you go live on  certain days in the week or just randomly Drew  

uh usually it's been like Mondays and Thursdays  Japan time uh but like I don't have a specific  

schedule and some days maybe I will do it some  days maybe not like next week Monday I will  

probably not I don't think uh do a live hey Drew  the English fluency guy do you remember the TV  

series friends in order to learn English yeah you  can watch friends if you like but remember like  

find something you can focus on an episode of a TV  show might even be too much it will give you a lot  

of information if you don't have a lot of of like  information before that so it takes a while to get  

all the information for for understanding things  like a native there are many pieces of that Milton  

says Hey teacher what does off the wagon mean  uh that's an expression for like like if you're  

drinking and then you you stop drinking you fall  off the wagon again now anything like that you can  

just Google an expression the best thing the best  kind of questions I can answer for people is like  

nuances or other things like that that you can't  just get at Google for all right I think these  

Charming words you haven't heard it from your  best friends a miracle out for grabs no that's  

not what we say but it says thank you very much  yes and I am happy that I got to to visit your  

stream it is 5 20 a.m in Ukraine now night shift  uh did my favor for the first time in my life you  

could say did me yes so the night shift did me a  favor for the first time in my life how often do  

you go online as I just mentioned about uh two  times a week but it depends we'll see how that  

goes and I think I will probably make more short  videos of the like eclipse of these videos Ishmael  

says what will be the best method of learning to  get rid of an accent as I mentioned earlier in  

this video where you're getting lots of examples  from different people so if you hear 10 different  

people talking and even if they're not saying  exactly the same thing some of the words will  

be the same and you can hear how they pronounce  words differently so I've given an example before  

about a woman that my family like we would go  to her house when I was younger and she is from  

the southern I think she is from Georgia in the  United States and she would say y'all want some  

pie y'all want some pie and the like the like  kind of clear English is like would you all like  

some pie like the pie to eat for dessert y'all  want some pie y'all want some pie and so if you  

hear lots of different people saying something  then it becomes a lot easier to understand that  

all right uh Eunice says bound equals Walk and Run  Plus Jump yeah again like rather than getting a  

definition like type it into Google or like just  like go go to Google image search and you'll see  

like probably some different examples of that  but yes it's like uh for that example for bound  

to do something it's a little bit different  but like yeah like to bound it's like Beyond  

to bound all right y'all want some pie yes on  the wagon means that people a long time ago  

used to ride a wagon the horse and go to rehab  to get sober it probably they probably wasn't  

rehab when people were riding horses and wagons  I don't know if that was a thing back then or  

not all right Vanessa says is it possible to  get uh by in Japan just speaking English uh  

uh yeah I mean people do because lots of  people come out here and don't speak and  

and many Japanese people they will try to speak  English and and they will make an effort to do  

that actually Japanese people uh they will  speak English if you if you don't speak any  

Japanese they will they will make that effort but  they will feel very shy about using Japanese or  

using English if I or me or anybody else  if you start speaking Japanese so like  

sometimes if I if I go somewhere I will not use  any Japanese just to see if people can speak  

but other times I I have to pay attention I see  like if they're nervous so I went to a cafe uh  

and this is usually for like a local place I  don't expect those people to speak any English  

so I went a friend of mine recommended a cafe  and this is just not far from where I am right  

now but I walked in there and the lady looked  like kind of scared uh she wasn't like nervous  

about me but she was like oh no is this guy gonna  you know speak or whatever and so usually when I  

go into a place like that uh I will I will say  give a big Lego konichiwa you know like letting  

them know I can speak all right but yes you you  definitely can uh you can a lot of people do again  

like there are many people in Japan who have  been here for many years and still can't speak  

also reading like I'm not even a very good reader  of the language uh but you can definitely yeah you  

can you can get around it's certainly better you  have a completely different life if you can speak  

all right uh we are waiting for Drew's lab  class on Sunday and Wednesdays yeah yeah  

uh also you don't have to watch the video live  just come back and watch it whenever all right  

uh calluses let me ask a question sir which one is  more important and can force us to study when we  

start our learning English Journey self discipline  or motivation uh I don't I don't really think  

either of those if you need self-discipline and  motivation you're probably not learning English  

as a first language so learning English as a  first language should be fun and easy because  

it's supposed to be understandable but if you're  if you need like self-discipline and motivation  

it means that you're trying to learn English as  a second language and it's probably boring and  

you're trying to force yourself to do something  so language learning is something we should all  

be able to do it's a very natural process you  were born to speak and so that's why everybody  

learns to speak their native language it's just a  natural thing and when you're learning things you  

know from your friends or your parents or whatever  it's not you don't need motivation to do that it's  

just a natural process and so English as a second  language or whatever language as a second language  

is usually boring because you're forcing yourself  to do something you don't want to do but English  

as a first language it's like fun and easy you  know that's why people watch my videos and they're  

like oh well like I actually really learned  something and it was fun and easy and I could  

feel myself becoming more fluent so when you watch  lots of videos on YouTube a lot of it is English  

as a second language and it's kind of boring to  watch because it's just explaining grammar rules  

or whatever all right uh see how much time we got  here we got a little bit of time okay Drew don't  

be so particular how do they know they didn't  have rehabs back then again I don't know I'm  

not making a claim they could have had rehabs  that's an interesting thing to Google though  

go to Google and find out like when is when was  the first rehab center for alcoholics or whatever  

I think the rehab was just like you go to the  local I don't know like I imagine like people  

on wagons in the old west you would go to I don't  know like the local hospital or something I don't  

know maybe they would give you some different kind  of alcohol I can't I don't know uh Santa tennis is  

uh if I keep watching your videos I can speak  fluently if I stop watching your videos I lose  

my fluency really yeah uh you I mean again it's  good to review information but don't only watch  

my videos you have to you have to learn with other  people other examples uh from real situations real  

native speakers this is what we do in fluent  for life so if it's just me speaking you're  

not going to get fluent as quickly or be able to  understand people as easily if you actually have  

lots of examples from native speakers so you need  to get those examples too I'm glad my lessons are  

helpful but my lessons are probably not enough and  that's why I have lots of native speakers join me  

in the lessons all right English is considered  an easy language to learn if we compare it with  

uh like Asian and Arabic tongues yeah I guess I  mean the languages are easy or hard for different  

reasons but the interesting thing is that all  kids learn their own language at like the same  

time so little little English-speaking kids  they they start speaking English like two or  

three years old and little Japanese kids start  speaking Japanese at two or three years old so  

there's nothing really different about that I  mean the part of the tricky thing about Japanese  

is all of the written characters so it takes many  years to learn all of that regular people going  

to school it takes like 12 years or something to  learn all the the Japanese characters that you  

use but in English we only have 26 characters I  guess you multiply that by two for lowercase and  

capital letters so there are some easier things  and difficult things but the interesting thing is  

that if you learn as a first language logically  you should start speaking it and you should be  

doing it much faster than even natives are doing  it uh Ishmael says I will introduce these lessons  

to many people as many people you would say  as many people as I can glad to hear it these  

lessons are so helpful yeah you would say they  are so very helpful or you can just say like yeah  

you wouldn't put them much in there I like the  concept of reviewing an ownership yeah you want  

to get to the point where you feel like it's your  language so if I if I hear a new word in Japanese  

and I don't really understand that I'm like uh I  don't really understand what that means so I will  

not feel confident and comfortable using it in a  conversation but when I do understand something  

I'm like ah now I got it then I can feel confident  about using it so there there is a little bit of  

speaking practice you need but it's like the the  understanding practices is much more important  

Drew when I have an opportunity to think uh my  English is fluent writing for example however the  

problems begin when I start speaking yes because  they are these are different skills so you can you  

can read and write and understand things and and  also the way you have to think about the way the  

brain works so as an example uh if I if I ask you  like tell me five famous actors or even give me  

like 10 names of famous actors your your brain is  like all right now I'm starting you can feel the  

effort goes up I'm thinking like who is a famous  actor like this person and that person maybe you  

can think of two or three people and then you have  to think a little bit harder so that's if you're  

trying to recall information but if I give you  pictures of actors and just say like touch the  

picture of the person you like you can do that  in in two seconds it's like ding ding ding ding  

that you're done all right so recall where  you're trying to remember something is is a  

different skill than recognition where you like  see something and you and you recognize it and  

you can make a choice so if I go to a restaurant  and they've got like pictures of all the food I  

just choose which one I want it's very easy for  me but if I go to a restaurant and they're like  

what would you like then I have to think about  it I'm trying to recall or think about what I  

want it's a it's a different process so in an  actual conversation you're trying to recall and  

remember information rather than just recognize  it all right so these are different skills

uh all right and do you have any suggestion for  candidates while interviewing some companies you  

mean if you were trying to interview for a job  uh if I were trying to get a job at a company I  

would probably look for I would try to go around  the traditional like application process I would  

find out who is like the president or the whatever  as high as I could go uh and then talk with those  

people uh in uh in like try to try to get directly  to them and I would find out what what's going on  

with the company and if I could help them in  some way rather than trying to like interview  

for a typical job so I always wanted to do things  a little bit differently so that I look different  

to the company so if I just give a job application  like everybody else then I look like everybody  

else but if I look at the company I research them  and I'm asking trying to ask questions or whatever  

um then like I will I will be able to understand  that and and I can probably have like a better  

chance of getting that job uh let's see off wagon  seems to stop doing something or quit doing bad  

things yeah but it's it's kind of like typically  typically it's from alcohol but you could use it  

for something else but it's not not really used  for other things do you think it's important for  

non-native to know every word a native is saying  if they are speaking clearly uh well you can  

certainly be in a conversation and and get some  new vocabulary and not know what that vocabulary  

is uh but you can understand the general thing  that they're saying you might understand like  

I might like a friend of mine uh or many friends  of mine in different countries like I might have  

a friend from New Zealand or from the United  Kingdom or Australia and I understand what they  

say but they're using some vocabulary I don't  know so I have a friend from New Zealand and  

he's like oh that's Flash and I'm like I think he  means that's cool but I don't know for sure but  

I can understand from the context what something  means so I know the word flash but he's using it  

in a slightly different way it's like oh that's  like that's so flash that's a cool thing or if I  

see like a friend in the UK uh he uses a phrasal  verb like tart it up like to tart something up  

and I'm like well I don't I don't like no we  don't use that expression in English but I can  

understand from the context he's like look at that  look at that girl all tarted up over there with  

like too much makeup or something it's like ah  okay I understand what that person means so there  

will be times when even natives don't understand  everything that they're hearing uh but that's why  

it's important to focus number one on the context  and then you can learn other pieces like from that  

uh Ishmael says do you have any of your videos it  talked about the difference between have and has  

yes uh if you go to the channel and look for that  video there should be a video about have and has
