Practice Speaking English With Me In This Video - Asking For Directions

before so typically people can say how you been and you might respond with

I can't complain or I've been alright I'm doing alright

how you been

fantastic well in this video I'd like to talk about something that's another

common situation people have been asking me about and this is maybe how you give

directions to someone when they're lost or how you can ask directions if you're

lost well I am Drew Badger the world's first a number-one English Fluency Guide

and what we're going to talk about just something very common very obvious with

some very simple things that you can say I'm going to give you a few more

advanced expressions that you can use even though when you're first practicing

these if you're not really feeling very confident you can say very simple things

just like we practiced in the previous video where we're talking about buying

tickets to certain places you can give a longer thing like I'd like to go to a

particular place or you can just say the name of the place because that's just

nice and simple and you can feel confident when you're doing that so in

this one imagine you're maybe standing around and you're feeling a little bit

lost you're in a new place like I'm traveling in Italy and I don't know

where I'm going and I'm just holding a big map and looking around and I'm

feeling lost so if you come up to me and say you seem a bit lost so you seem a

bit lost you can also say are you lost or do you need any help so do you need

any help is just a very common thing you can ask it doesn't really matter what

the situation is but a common thing that native speakers will use is you seem

lost or you seem a bit lost and then you can respond with yeah can you point me

in the right direction can you point me in the right direction so this is a

longer way of saying this you can say yes I am lost that's a way of responding

to that if you're not feeling very confident but a thing to practice is

yeah can you point me in the right direction so it's saying yes can you

give me directions to something but a native more conversational way of saying

this is can you point me in the right direction so we're just going to

practice that right now I'll say you seem lost and then you give name yeah

can you point me in the right direction can you point me in the right direction

very good can you point me in the right direction

let's try it again hey you seem a bit lost you're okay very good

so you seem a bit lost or are you okay or can I help you and then you respond

with yeah I'm lost or yeah can you point me in the right direction and then I can

say just like we're practicing with the previous lesson talking about tickets is

where you headed where are you headed so instead of just saying where do you want

to go or where are you trying to go you can say where are you headed where are

you headed and then you can respond with the name of the location or the place

you're trying to go to so where you hit it where you hit it and you respond with

you know the name of the place like you're going to some like a museum or

whatever it doesn't really matter and then after that you can give the actual

directions to the person say oh like just take this way or take that bus or

do something I don't want to give like really long explanations about this

because typically the people are most nervous when they're getting into the

conversation at the very beginning once you're in the conversation once you've

made that connection with people then it's a lot a lot kind of more relaxing

and then it doesn't really matter if you make a mistake but if you prepare a few

phrases and that's why we're doing that in this series of videos if you prepare

a few things then you feel much more excited to speak so you seem a bit lost

ah can you point me in the right direction so let's just practice that

first you seem a bit lost fantastic where you headed so you can just say

again the name of the place I'm headed to whatever or just say the name of the

place like the museum or the street or the city or it doesn't matter like

you're trying to take a bus or a car someplace or you could say I'm trying to

get to something so I'm trying to do something this is a very native way of

expressing this native speakers will often talk about because we can't really

say I'm doing something because you don't really know how you're doing it we

say I'm trying to do something so I'm trying to get to a particular place hey

you seem a bit lost you okay Oh where you

headed oh well you can just take the bus and

it's three blocks up that way very easy let's try it again

you're okay you seem a bit lost Oh

where you headed oh that's not very far at all if you actually just walk up the

street and turn left you'll see it you can't miss it you

can't miss it so this is another great thing just trying to make people feel

more comfortable when you're giving them an explanation or something to say yes

it's very obvious you can't miss it now let's try it one more time I want

you to ask me are you lost are you lost or you seem a bit lost yeah I think I'm

lost can you point me in the right direction actually I'm trying to get to

the Art Museum is that around here okay all right thank you very much now you

can also maybe you know where the place is and it's close by and you could say

oh I'll take you there so we can walk together and we can go to that

particular place let's try one more time are you okay

you look us you look a little bit lost are you okay oh where are you headed Oh

fantastic why don't you walk with me and I'll take you there it's right up the

street all right very good so remember when you're practicing these

things don't just watch the video one time go back practice and try being both

the person that is lost and the person that's asking for help and if you have a

person that you can also practice with you know maybe your sister or your

father your brother or some friend or a native speaker try practicing the same

situation with them and then you know offer advice say where something is it's

all about how much you practice that's the real secret to getting fluent don't

just sit and watch videos interact with them like you're talking with me and

then get out in practice in the real world well that's it for this video I
