Welcome to a very wet and windy England yes the wind is blowing the weather forecast said

that there would be gales today and they have arrived it's Sunday afternoon and welcome

to a new live show yes it's English in your ear because it's a Sunday it's a fun day it's time to improve your English.

do do do do dooo...here we go yes we are back on a very windy day look at the weather outside it is a very stormy day here in England

I don't know what the weather is like where you are but right now here we are having a big storm

it's very windy I was outside earlier I was going to do a lot of filming in the garden but unfortunately

my camera kept blowing away so I decided in the end not to do it well mmm what can we

say except for hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today are you okay

I hope so are you happy are you happy I really hope you are happy because I'm very excited

we are back I have been away for the past two weeks I have been so busy I can't begin

to tell you how busy I have been over the past 14 days many sleepless nights many things

went wrong many problems arose but I managed to sort them all out and here we are oh my

goodness it is Sunday it's a fun day it's time to improve your English and yes you may

have noticed that some things have already changed we have a new look new theme music

new title yes it's English in your ear that is the name of this special live stream which

will be coming your way every Sunday from 2 p.m. UK time sadly it's the same old presenters

and very sorry about that it's mr. Duncan and also coming later on also we have Oh guess

who's coming later on yes it's mr. Steve [Music] [Music] hmm so think of this as a radio show

but besides hearing the voices you can also see the people involved so that's the way

in which I would like you to view all of this from now on when we are live think of it is

a sort of radio show with pictures not only that just like a normal radio show quite often

you can phone in well here we have the live chat coming up later on we have mr. Steve

joining in but at the moment it's only me so let's have a look shall we let's have a

look what's going on on the live chat a lot of people already joining in and you will

see that the live chat also looks a little bit different today so I have been away for

have a good excuse for being away because I've been very busy redesigning the studio

rebuilding everything trying some new technology as well as well as mr. Steve and myself both

being sick I'm not joking we were both ill now if you remember two weeks ago mr. Steve

had a very bad cold but can you believe it I also ended up catching a cold and I have

a feeling it was mr. Steve's cold that I caught so not only did Steve hadn't have a bad cold

I also had one as well so I must admit I wasn't feeling very well during my first week of

preparing my new looks to do it really was quite hard work Beatriz is here oh hello Beatriz

of you to say I know I'm going to mention this a few times today but I have been so

busy preparing all of this I have completely taken my studio apart and rebuilt it so everything

you can see now is different and new sometimes it is nice to make changes don't you think

so they say that they say that thank you very much show me somebody is really saying some

nasty things on the live chat I don't know why why are you being so nasty to me stop

being so nasty well that's not a very nice way to start a live stream is it some some

bad language I know that we all swear from time to time but I think having it on the

live stream sometimes isn't a good idea there might be young people watching so the reason

why we are here well we are here to help ourselves improve our English listening I am a teacher

of English I've been teaching English on YouTube for over 10 years in fact I am now into my

thirteenth year on YouTube can you believe it some people getting very angry on a live

we have a lot of things to show you today we have some clips from my youtube videos

we also have mr. Steve coming later on and a lot of people ask well what is English all

about what is it all about so I thought it would be fun to have a brief history of the

English language hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today are you

ok I hope so are you happy I hope so I have a question for you when is an English word

not an English word when it's a foreign word used both inside and outside the language

in today's lesson we are going to look at those words that may sound foreign to non

English speakers but are commonly used by many native speakers every day in some cases

without them even realizing it confused not for much longer I hope as we take a look at

what I like to call for English the English language has become one of the most spoken

in the world it has been described by some as a global language over the years it has

been viewed as a language of freedom and a symbol of oppression its uses still on the

increase and remains a never dominating medium on the world stage having said that to describe

English as a unique language would be a misnomer as we will be finding out today even modern

spoken English regularly contains words taken straight from other languages some examples

of which we will take a close look at later but first let's take a close look at how it

all started with a brief history of the English language [Music] the English language was

formed in four distinctive stages in its original form we usually refer to it as Old English

this is the earliest form of the language which was created between 500 and 1100 AD

by the invaders of ancient Britain from Southern Denmark and Jutland who were known as the

angles the angles along with the Saxons and Jutes spoke a language which in modern times

became known as Old English the word English comes from angles the land of angles which

is where we get England you could also see this influence in the French word illunga

latere there were four distinctive dialects of Old English Northumbrian Mercian West Saxon

and Kentish all of which were related to the different regions of early England which still

exists today as Northumbria Mercia Wessex and Kent the next big change came with the

Norman Conquest led by William the Conqueror who invaded England in 1066 ad with this invasion

came a new language this time the integration the French language occurred which formed

into what we now call middle English through the changes caused by the realignment of power

the language of Latin was also integrated into English the romancing of the English

language was by then well underway in fact the Roman influence had occurred earlier albeit

in a small way after the introduction of Christianity to England during the 7th century it is worth

noting that even at this time the English spoken bore very little resemblance to the

language we use today but its influence on modern English cannot be ignored a large portion

of modern English words are in essence foreign words which came into being during the early

invasions by the anglo-saxons and the Vikings [Music] from 1204 ad a division formed this

was due to the fall of Normandy and King John to the King of France this caused a division

between France and the English Normans the ruling class by this time were known as the

nobles the next big change occurred after the Great Plague which wiped out a huge portion

of the population and led to a surge in the so called laboring class these events led

to another surge in the use of English as a common language middle English had taken

hold of the country and would go on to develop yet again into what we now refer to as early

modern English with this came the period known as the Renaissance it signaled the birth of

modern literature philosophy and science which would go on to shape not only this country

but also many parts of the world from this would come what we now refer to as modern

English people often ask me why I'm so fascinated by a language I have spoken all my life and

used daily why am I not bored of hearing English spoken all the time this would be a fair question

my love of English comes from not just how it is used but from how it came into being

used English is more than a language it is an essence of all which came before it carries

with it traditions thoughts and ways of living from over the past nine hundred years the

changes that have occurred indelibly left their marks on this language as Wars and invasions

were carried out and attitudes altered so the language changed to the marks left by

the Romans anglo-saxons Vikings and the many rulers of this country ever since have shaped

the way in which English is used right up to this very day the historical impact of

English remains with us new countries were formed through this language sometimes by

choice and sometimes not the modern use of English does more than merely allow dialogue

to take place it gives us a common ground it serves as a means for us to understand

each other as I have said before whether we agree or disagree with each other is irrelevant

the important thing is that we are all talking so there you have it an introduction to the

English language

so now there should be no confusion I might play that every week because a lot of people

ask me mr. Duncan can you please explain all about the English language and why we use

English and why on earth is it so popular well if you check out my youtube channel you

have the English language and why it is so popular so I hope you will check those out

scenes in the garden today because well spring has arrived even though at the moment it's

rather windy outside look at the weather at the moment it is so windy in fact quite a

few of my daffodils have been destroyed because of the wind which isn't very nice really we

have mr. Steve coming very soon you may notice there are some slight changes today things

do look a little bit different yes I look different quite a few people have already

asked mr. Duncan where is your hat where is your hat well no more hats no more t-shirts

from now on it's formal dress as you can see I'm also wearing my my Union flag tie as well

because a lot of people ask where are you mr. Duncan where do you broadcast from well

I broadcast from England and just as a way of showing it there you can see my Union flag

just to show that yes I am broadcasting to you from the United Kingdom talking of which

oh we have something to mention here something very important just 19 days to go before brexit

oh my goodness it's true only 19 days before the UK leaves the European Union but the big

question is will it actually happen I don't think I can remember a period of time when

people have argued so much over one issue so just 19 days before the UK leaves the European

Union but will it happen because next Tuesday just two days from now there will be a big

vote on whether or not to delay the brexit decision so we'll see what happens mr. Steve

we'll be here soon I can't believe half an hour already half an hour has gone by the

today by the way before Steve arrives one of the things I want to talk about is this

week there was a documentary on American television and also here in the UK all about Michael

Jackson it's 10 years nearly 10 years since Michael Jackson died can you believe it's

been 10 years? and this week once again people talking about Michael Jackson but not in a

nice way and I'm just wondering do you still listen to Michael Jackson despite the fact

that a lot of people seem to have a negative view of Michael Jackson it would appear that

his music is still very popular so do you still listen to Michael Jackson do you still

like his music do you still listen to his songs maybe early in the morning when you

get up maybe for your morning exercise you might do a little moonwalk around the bedroom

or maybe you do a little bit of thriller or perhaps you beat it who knows here he comes

it's mr. Steve everyone oh I'm just so excited mr. Steve is on his way [Music] here he comes

mr. steve is here now the big question is how comfortable is mr. Steve at the moment

is he comfortable or is he feeling a little uncomfortable because every week he complains

all about the fact that he feels uncomfortable standing up so today he has a lovely comfortable

chair hello oh hello hello everybody out there in the world of English Wow yes well I'm a

little comfortable here mr. Duncan I'm on a nice comfortable chair are you enjoying

the new comfortable surroundings I'll tell you at 4 o'clock okay because you've rearranged

everything mr. Duncan mr. Duncan has been I haven't seen him for two weeks mr. Duncan

has been hiding away in on this studio of his I've heard lots of banging lots of noise

soaring I've heard swearing I've heard the sound of computers blowing up there has been

a lot of swearing well mr. Duncan has been working extremely hard despite being ill updating

his studio and coming up with a new look trying to make it look fresh and newer and of course

my request for some time now has been that I wouldn't have to stand up for an hour and

a half yes because it used to make me very tired so Oh I'm now sitting down on a comfortable

chair in a different part of the studio in fact in a different studio altogether is this

studio 6 mr. Duncan I'm sitting in now that's right what I've done actually I've

converted every room in the house to a studio now at the moment you might not believe it

you might not believe it but Steve at the moment is actually sitting on the toilet that's

it I'm on the toilet so Steve is actually having a giant poo at the moment and he's

yes see oh yeah it just won't come out mr. Duncan it's good job I'm not having a wee okay

here's here's the good part now not only can we have Steve on the screen we could also

have me on the screen at the same time oh yes that's better we're together now oh hello

Steve hello hello mr. Duncan how are you I'm okay thank you who you are reunited reunited

even though we are separated by several hundred miles because I'm in another part of the country

in a completely different studio well I could be I could be yes because I'm not standing

right next to you and no that makes no sense but I could be anywhere in the world couldn't

I mr. Duncan you could be but you're not where am I then I'm not on the toilet but it's like

that fact that you accused me of sitting on a toilet safe if you don't know where you

are then there no one will I'm only about five foot from you in fact okay what why do

you keep explaining all of the things that you're explaining it or no I'm just explaining

things in a comical way I think I'll have a glass of water anyway this is all going

very well so far they'll believe you what have you been talking about mr. Duncan well

we've only been on for about 35 minutes so we've been talking about the weather because

it's windy outside it's very I also mentioned the fact that you you gave me a cold I caught

your cold you did I had a very bad cold then I had to be in a show so I I'd lost about

the top four notes of my range which was a bit annoying yes talking about me by the way

and then mr. Duncan caught it and he came along to see the the concert version of a

show yes which I think I've spoken about in previous and no one's interested in that well

they were when I showed it before I'm not gonna go into details mr. Duncan I'm just

saying I was in a show yeah me in a show but that's not what we're talking the stage okay

Steve we're talking about me catching your bloody cold yes well it's not my fault so

I had this wonderful plan for the first week I was going to tear the studio to pieces I

was going to do so many things and then on the second day I came down with mr. Steve's

fever I caught it from him I don't know how I don't know that you caught it from me you

could have caught it from anyone it was definitely your cold mind you you don't actually come

into contact with anybody else apart from me so it probably was me what does that mean

we aren't exactly the most sociable of human beings are you mr. Duncan no no are you trapped

steady sneeze you Diaz steady Steve you are you are really really on very thin ice at

the moment if we are going to start revealing things so so what are we going to talk about

mr. Duncan yes I'd leave it there if I were you I'm on about being sociable I'm not being

social so I I noticed last week you were on the stage but I noticed also you were doing

a few Michael Jackson moves on the stage you were you were grabbing your crotch now and

again I was not I saw you moonwalking but the big question is are you still a fan of

Michael Jackson despite everything that keeps coming out about him well it's a case of you

know can you or should you separate the man from the music and I think I don't know but

I mean I would still listen to Michael Jackson's music yes because I grew up with it okay so

we don't need to talk what well I think we with you know it's one of those difficult

one good ones isn't it people lots of people are being interviewed now I've noticed in

the UK because his music has been banned from certain countries okay and they keep being

asked a question Oh or will you still listen to Michael Jackson's music and they the answer

that most people seem to be giving because they feel very uncomfortable saying yes - that

answer is that well I didn't really use to listen to Michael Jackson's music anyway so

that's how they seem to be getting out of the question by pretending that they're never

really used to listen to his music anyway okay and they all look very uncomfortable

whenever I've seen people being interviewed on television and they're being asked they're

all sort of you know oh how shall I answer that how shall I answer that without upsetting

anybody and I think it's a case of and I don't know the answer do you separate the man and

what he was I think he was actually convicted wasn't he no cause this no he was never convicted

of anything wasn't he right okay well sorry okay can you please tell me when Michael Jackson

was in prison cuz I don't remember him going to prison well there was a court case well

yeah but he was acquitted okay so and so the other alleged to have done or what people

are accusing him of having done and do you separate that from the music yes and I think

if you I don't know for some people they probably can't. I'm done and do you separate that from

the music yes and I think if you I don't know for some people they probably can't but one

of my favorite all-time songs is Billie Jean okay so I'm not gonna stop listening to that

because I like the song that doesn't mean that I'm endorsing anything the may or may

not have done so person but the problem is music okay the problem I have it with do all

of this the problem I have with this is the is the hypocrisy of it so people sometimes

will will cherry-pick they decide that they don't like that person because they did something

bad but then they will let another person off even though that even though they've done

bad things as well so what i needed ly have done yes what what i don't like is the hypocrisy

of it so people who keep changing their minds but i think it's a difficult one and can you

believe the other thing i can't believe is it's ten years since Michael Jackson died

no that is a long time mr. Duncan I wonder what other people are saying I think a voice

chat I think of all the shocking things I think the fact that it's ten years since he

died is the most shocking one that where is the time gone that's what I can't believe

so let's have a look shall we let's have a look at the live chat we can have the live

chat we can also have mr. Steve and myself at the same time oh wow look at that so there

you go Steve are you happy now you can see the live chat now I can indeed I can sort

of see it it's a bit smaller than it used to be okay mate maybe this will help oh thank

you mr. Duncan that's better look at that Oh what was petrol been saying yes it's a

case of I think can you separate the man from the music is what people seem to be saying

yes and I think it's just a personal decision I you know I I'm still going to because I

do like some of his music yes so the answers that would be yes of course whatever he's

done if it's true would be you know wrong well I've got to endorse what he's done as

a person well no one slow music is a you know it's separate because I mean let's face it

if you look if you were to take any musician and examine their lives in great detail you

would probably discover that they were or probably a lot of them have done very questionable

things I would imagine because I mean we talk about the me to movement now don't be in the

UK and a lot of around the world it obviously it's a was directed of course against sexual

misconduct by actors against male actors against female actors and now that of course is is

going across into the music industry so now we've got certain musicians now are being

accused of similar bad behaviour and some people are saying it's about time because

the music music industry of course some of the lyrics by some of the songs or some artists

of quite outlandish and some of the some of the things that they're saying and you might

not agree with that at all so we're in this situation now where musicians are going to

be very closely looked at about about their behaviour so if you were to not listen to

someone's music because of something that they've done just probably not going to be

many artists out there that you would ever be able to listen to because this is the very

nature of this music is that you are likely to be the fairly extreme person in in your

behavior yes we're getting okay then I said point I'm making yeah you probably have to

stop listening to everybody yeah okay that's good we can we get the point that's that was

a point well made but the thing I don't like is the hypocrisy of it all after David Bowie

I'd a lot of stories came out about things that he allegedly did which which was very

unsavoury but but no one cared and these these were stories that were published in in many

magazines one particular magazine ran a long story all about the things that David Bowie

was supposed to have got up to but no one cares about that because he's a he's a musical

genius so that's the thing how do we take these things and look at them equally but

we don't we we we sometimes allow people a free pass with with the things that they've

done wrong in the past it's very strange isn't it so so maybe sometimes in politics a politician

might go to prison and then come out of prison and then write a book all about their time

in prison but people will still go out and buy the book even though this this politician

has been to prison and that's the problem I I don't like the hypocrisy of it yes some

some people seem to be able to get away with with things and others calm but often say

this have Donald Trump and they and the fairly outlandish things he says and the allegedly

lies lot of lies he tells another politician wouldn't get away with it it seems that some

people the rules apply it seemed to apply in different ways to different people and

I think it's the same with and sooo cat just made a point about about certain film stars

who have been in the spotlight recently for their bad behavior is that it's yeah who would

you watch because if you were to examine everybody's nobody is whiter than white obviously some

crimes are a lot worse than others that's a very interesting phrase to use them yes

whiter than white is a phrase of course we use to describe somebody who's has done nothing

wrong and but yeah who would you who would you watch who would you listen to who's your

famous film star who's your famous musician if you were to know everything about their

private lives you probably and then base whether you listen or watch them on that then you

probably wouldn't be able to look or watch it anybody so show it show it just agree that

everyone has something that they want to hide so it's so evenness maybe maybe there's some

skeleton in in the in the cupboard that we don't want to people to know about but but

it depends on how bad it is yes that's independent identities yes exactly so would you like to

have a look at the live chat because there are a lot of people talking at the moment

I think sue Kat is replying to someone yes so if you listen to the music of someone who's

been to prison or done something really badly what what if Hitler had made some songs what

if Hitler had written some songs and they were really good and everyone loved them would

you still listen to those so that's the thing you see how bad does the thing that the person

does have to be before you stop listening to them or watching their movies now Woody

Allen is a very good thing to mention a very good point to mention because there have been

things going on around him for many many many many years yes that's wrong at a su-kam mentioned

him and yet would you not watch his films because of things that he's allegedly done

guadalupe's a couple of people have said can I repeat the phrase whiter than white huh

yes because I think there might be some misunderstanding there all right okay yes you explain what

that phrase means II know these days the words white and black are not words that you just

say without thinking because this week a Member of Parliament got into trouble by vice by

slipping up I think it was a slip of the tongue but they use the word black in the wrong way

but I don't think they meant to do it so if you are whiter than white it means you are

a good person maybe you are angelic or pure so it doesn't refer to a person's race so

when we say a person is whiter than white it means they they are a good person their

image is an honorable one would you say Steve yes because the white is associated with the

cleanliness and godliness and all things pure like like snow for example his white pure

snow is white so that's just nothing to do with race as you say so if you say somebody

is whiter than white it means they're the purest of the pure there they are beyond reproach

they are seen to be somebody who is absolutely faultless and blameless and you often use

that dose it's in such a thinks that they're whiter than white they think that there's

that there's is quite often if you judge somebody because of their bad behavior somebody might

say huh what do you think you're whiter than white in other words they're saying well I'm

sure you've got some areas of your life that you're on that you've done some wrong or you're

not you you know you're you you haven't all you haven't always been you you must have

committed some sins in your lifetime so it's often used when some when somebody thinks

you're being hypocritical yes yes it's a phrase to mean that that you are you've never done

anything wrong yes you're a good person nobody is whiter than white okay we've got that now

so angelic an angelic person a person who has no faults a person has the thought which

of course doesn't exist so the phrase is usually used to mean though you know don't you criticize

me because you're not whiter than white in other words you you you've done wrong in the

past you must have done cuz everybody has because to err is human yes that's it I tell

you suddenly can't by the way somebody's used the phrase the blacker than black you can't

that there's no such phrases that there's those phrases no although they're odd there

are a lot of terms for the word black most of which are negative which we don't tend

to use nowadays Anna says for sure Michael Jackson had a lot of contradictions and a

fragile personality oh yes I know how that feels yes no you wouldn't use the phrase somebody

is totally black you just don't use it that way round you use somebody to describe somebody

who is virtuous pure who has never committed any sins or transgressions or never been bad

to anybody or never sworn or never talked badly about somebody you would say that they

were whiter than white yes but of course nobody is so that phrase is usually used no sarcastically

yes but it's rarely used nowadays because of the misunderstanding that goes with it

unfortunately because everyone is nothing to do with race at all it's nothing to do

with race so I think we've definitely cleared that one up having spoken about it for the

last 20 minutes so Steve it's been a busy week and yes once again mr. Steve has picked

up another award can you believe it we can't believe that mr. Steve has another award last

week we found out that mr. Steve has picked up yet another award I don't know I don't

know what it's for but but it would appear that on a weekly basis you are now picking

up Awards is this true Steve what's what's going on so what yes that's true Jeff as use

you can use the phrase black sheep of the family just to just to end there yes meaning

somebody who is the bad person in the family yeah yes I have picked up another award mr.

Duncan yes for my in my job yes for some strange reason not picked up an award was a couple

of weeks ago for being number one in the UK yes and now it's I'm number one in Europe

as well because I'm going on another trip I can't believe this this is incredible so

so now you have this string of awards so I'm so successful mr. Duncan so next week when

I introduce you I will have to say a multi-award-winning it doesn't count it doesn't have much kudos

it doesn't count for much so it doesn't matter in my in my line of work what sorry you've

got two awards for your work but it doesn't refer to your work well I mean it's not known

outside the industry that I work in so it's not something that you could say I've got

an award for this and every one word you know I'm not gonna be on television for it that

doesn't matter now you know you know nowadays it doesn't matter if you've been on television

for more than five seconds you're now a celebrity you know that I've been on television lots

of times mr. Duncan on your show okay thank you people to congratulate me yes oh yes my

head is swelling is it still on the screen mr. Duncan Oh as it's well beyond the reaches

of your camera well it's it's already it's it's always a bit swollen that's true so Steve

has now a multi awards not just one so this is also happened during the past two weeks

whilst we've been away and today today sorry I did work very hard last year okay if my

boss is watching what he knows that anyway well we all know that because you've got an

award that's what I'm saying I've worked hard to get it so you do realize when you pick

up an Oscar they don't say oh I made some good films this year we know that you've got

an Oscar in your hand anyway I think sometimes Steve is a little what's the word I'm looking

for a little modest now we are talking about a few things today we're going to take a break

in a moment we're going to talk about numbers and this is something that I I am go to say

it I don't care who knows one of my weak points is using numbers and mathematics I'm going

to say it now so that is one of my weak points but now we are going to take a look at an

excerpt from one of my English lessons and this is where I talk all about numbers and

then we will be back with the live chat and more of mr. Steve

hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today are you okay I hope so are

you happy I hope so in today's lesson we are going to take a look at some things that we

use in our everyday life something that comes in very useful when we need to add up or subtract

or multiply in today's lesson we are going to talk all about numbers

the word number derives from the Latin numerous and the numbers we use today originated in

Arabic form during the eighth century the original design of the numbers was based on

geometric shapes the amount of angles used in each character showed the number value

so number one has just one angle number two has two angles number three has three angles

and so on these Arabic characters have changed very little over the years and are now used

by everyone everywhere there are many ways to express a number it can be expressed as

a word as a symbol as a figure a number represents a particular quantity or amount you count

using numbers calculations use numbers this is called mathematics or maths for short in

American English it is pronounced as math numbers express quantity numbers express dimensions

the height width length circumference and even the appearance of an object can be expressed

using numbers the weight of something or the mass of an object is also expressed as a number

there were 200 guests at the wedding party the tree is 10 meters tall the field is 100

meters wide the pole is 15 meters long the circle is 10 inches in diameter the house

has two doors and eight windows I weigh 11 stone time and distance are also expressed

using numbers how long something takes to occur and when it occurs and how far away

something is or the distance between one thing and another can all be expressed using numbers

doing something slightly different in fact it will be different from now on because we

have a new look a new name English in your ear now when you say English in your ear you

have to do this as well so don't just say it but do it as well so English in your ear

thought I'd go and pick a daffodil out of the garden scissored he said I think it was

how are you we might actually we might actually get people saying that they would rather see

the daffodil than you who knows wouldn't be for the first time it is live English it's

a Sunday and we are back yes we've been away for two weeks mr. Steve was really an happy

last week he was unhappy because he was missing the live stream I was missing it I had lots

of messages from people asking where are you mr. Duncan yeah mr. Duncan where are you were

waiting for you to come on to the live stream of course last week I wasn't here but now

we are back and we will be with you every single Sunday we might have a few absences

for various reasons but most Sunday's we will be here live and look mr. Steve it's three

o'clock oh hello there so we have some words and phrases to do with numbers coming up now

Steve I think that you are very good at mathematics would I be right um average I would say average

I wasn't very good at school at maths or as they say in America math yes of course because

it's fair to point out that that there is a difference with the the word usage and also

the way it said so in British English we will normally say maths so the shorthand version

of mathematics mathematics I'm going to maths class at 3 o'clock and in the United States

they will say meth meth so did you do your math homework and here in the UK we will say

did you do your maths homework we shouldn't S on the end which is short for mathematics

and of course you can also use the word arithmetic as well so I think you're pretty good at maths

Steve especial well I I think you are I had to retake my you take exams in the UK called

out levels when you're 16 well you used to I think you'd still do I think levels that

exists virtually CSE's when you're 16 you take you take that level a certain level don't

you of exams and I failed my maths Oh level I had to retake it but then I had a very good

teacher and I got I got quite a high grade in it so I think it depends on on the quality

of your teacher often with a lot of subjects certainly with maths or math it if you're

in America then that is an important thing to have a good teacher because you've got

to understand the basics so yes I'm quite good with men my mother is brilliant at mental

arithmetic really so when we say mental arithmetic that means being is being able to add up figures

in your head or subtract figures and do percentages and things like that because of course my

mother is in her eighties now and she grew up in an era when there were no calculators

electronic calculators so you had to be able to add up numbers very quickly in your head

and she's very very good at that she can add subtract divide numbers very very quickly

or she knows how to do it you know writing it out on a paper on paper yes very good you

asked my mother to add up any figures and she does it very very quickly indeed and if

you work in a shop my mother used to work I think she used to work in like an accountants

office something like that so she had to add up lots of figures like rows if you give my

mother a row of figures to add up lots and lots of figures she can just do it very very

quickly by hand and that's a skill that has been lost on the younger generations now because

of course we've got calculators those those damn young people but I but I grew up being

able to do mental arithmetic because calculators didn't weren't available until I was probably

I don't know about sort of 12 or 13 electronic calculators didn't come in and certainly weren't

around in the 1960s no they came in around about the the if it was in fact the early

1970s can you believe it that calculators first appeared electronic calculators and

of course even though they were available you weren't allowed to use them in your exams

no I think you can now but even when I was taking my sort of old level maths exams you

couldn't use a calculator during the exam what I point you had to be able to but now

of course I think it's allowed what's the point of doing that what's the point of having

a maths test and then you take a calculator into the maths test and then they let you

use a calculator it's a bit like it's a bit like if you had a geography exam and and they

let you take a sat-nav with you you know it's it's just too easy so yes so those of us of

a certain age who were born in the 1950s or 60s will still be able to do mental arithmetic

add up figures and do percentages and which is quite useful it's useful to be able to

do that but of course it's not necessary now because if you've got a smartphone then you're

going to be able to do all those functions you're going to be able to have a calculator

on your phone anyway yeah it's just nice to be able to do it because I think he keeps

you your brain sharp and alert so oh so don't don't test me there mr. Duncan don't doubt

I don't want to be tested so what we've learnt what we've learned from that is that mr. Steve's

mum is very good at arithmetic in her head which is why she's very good at splitting

the bill when it when we are having a meal at the end of the meal yes Steve's mum is

always very good it's splitting the bill she can do it very quickly so now we know why

it is live English it is English in your ear I want to see mr. Steve do it as well here

we go one two three it's English in your ear I didn't know you were going to do that mr.

Duncan didn't you know I did tell you that's new to me I did tell you I we didn't rehearse

that mr. Duncan we haven't rehearsed anything you've been upstairs watching videos on your

computer of Ford Mustangs well not not this morning I haven't okay I've been watching

videos of the expense the expense which is a science-fiction programme that we like to

watch yes it finished yesterday we watched the last episode of season three of the expense

wonderful programme if you are into sci-fi but even if you're not into sci-fi I think

you'd still enjoy it because the plots are very very clever and the acting is very good

and the sets are amazing yes so yeah we like it much better than much better than the star

trek program which is on at the moment which which we've actually stopped watching because

it's such a little rubbish yes we don't watch now oh yeah we have been watching Star Trek

Discovery over the past few weeks but we've stopped watching it now because we don't like

it it's really rubbish however the for however there was a good program we watched last night

a new show that's available on Netflix with Ricky Gervais and it's called afterlife British

comedian an actor and III must admit the language was rather strong but it was very funny I

think we laughed quite a few times didn't we stay if we laughed out loud so yeah a pretty

good show I would recommend it Ricky to face Ricky Gervais his new show called afterlife

and it's a little bit depressing but it's also very funny as well it's one of those

it's what we call bittersweet so if something is bittersweet it means it is delightful but

also a little maybe uncomfortable at the same time so it might be it might be a show that's

not for everyone dark comedy dark comedy so that comedies we sometimes do here we go again

that is afraid that's used yes I don't think anyone says black comedy anymore they do they

don't they really really don't mr. Duncan they say they say dark comedy well well what

do you think viewers are we still on that's fine I don't know why you worry about these

things they're phrases that I use we don't need to be embarrassed about them I'm not

embarrassed I'm just you know this is the unfortunately this is how we live nowadays

we're not politically correct mr. Duncan well I know that so we don't need to be but I'm

trying to keep trying to keep my viewers you see I'm trying to attract everyone from everywhere

oh I think I think people can can separate the phrase from from any sort of race undertones

which not even there anyway that is just a phrase it's dark comedy black comedy it just

means is its comedy that's that is what it takes it's taking comedy from tragedy yes

really things that are things that are unpleasant maybe maybe a comedy show about death or maybe

a comedy show about loss if you've lost someone due to illness so that is pretty much like

the Ricky Gervais show that we watched last night so the theme of that is a person coming

to terms with the death of his wife so is it but it's very good i I thoroughly enjoyed

it it's very rare that you watch the first episode of a program and you like it straight

away normally it takes a while to start sort of liking the show so normally you have to

watch a few episodes before you like it but but yes I thought it was good the Ricky Gervais

his new show is called F their life and now I believe it's available on Netflix and anywhere

else where you can steal it mr. Steve I believe you have some words and phrases I do to do

with numbers we are going to have a look at that in a moment but first of all are you

okay I thought we're gonna do it now you said words and phrases wasn't that fine you go

ahead you're the producer I am apparently here's something sorry fine go ahead no what

did you say I didn't hear what you said you said I've got an itch oh okay let's move on

move on grace that's really great look what I got through the post the other day Steve

wonderful isn't that great are you going to do it this is this is something that came

through the letterbox the other day Steve and it says prearranged your funeral and reduce

the worry for loved ones now can I just say something when I'm dead I'm not really going

to be very worried about anyone really because I'm dead so to be honest with you I'm not

I'm not all that bothered in fact I tell you what Steve we will do this now when I'm dead

you could just take my body and you can just throw it on the rubbish tip how does that

sound? how does that sound that sounds about the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard miss

Lillian I think so I think that's it so that saves everything it saves all the hassle of

having to arrange anything it's it's it's much easier I don't think it's legal Oh mr.

Duncan anyway I'll should be rather upset so I'd probably the last thing I'm going to

do is dump your body in a refuse tip that's ridiculous mr. Duncan you know what I've worked

out I've also worked out that because because we have these big bins on wheels you can actually

fit a whole human body into one of those bins so so you don't have to take me to the rubbish

tip you don't have to take me to the rubbish dump you can just push me you can squeeze

me into one of those big dust bins that we have outside our houses yeah I think I'll

fit in there maybe you would mr. Duncan but I think that the the refuse collectors I might

get rather upset if they were to open the open the lid of the bin as they have to check

now in case that we're recycling everything correctly now you are resize fuse collectors

you look inside our bins now but you are recycling yes but you couldn't go in the black bin mr.

Duncan because that's not the proper recycling bin of course you could put me in the green

bin yes but that's only for garden waste there isn't actually a recycling bin that we have

for sort of recycling bodies okay look I don't think we have one I think even if your dog

dies or your pet your cat I don't think you can just throw the body into a bin and expect

the refuse collectors yes but this might be something but this might be something for

the future to think about so maybe in the future when we we become more environmentally

friendly we might start having a little dust bin some sort of refuse collection bin outside

our house for dead animals and people so so in you know you could take them somewhere

and recycle them you could turn them into glue rather do that with horses don't they

yes well that's what I'm saying I don't know whether they still do but that used to be

everybody used to know that when a horse died it was turned into glue hmm I don't know whether

I don't know whether you can still buy glue that is made from horses well it I I don't

remember ever seeing a brand of glue called horse glue no I don't think they actually

told you it came from there I didn't I don't know I don't know what sort of glue it was

turned into but they used to have glue factories and everybody knew that that's where the that's

where horses went when they died okay then charming so would you like to have a look

Steve yes in India there is a very sacred river called the Ganges and what a lot of

people do who are very spiritual they will take the body down by the Ganges and they

will burn the body they will burn it and then they will scatter what is left in the Ganges

did you know that yes it's creating a bit of a problem there isn't it because of course

yes there are so many people in India it's quite a highly populated country and this

is the problem now yeah it was fine when there weren't that many people and maybe you know

one person died a week or something but now of course when the population increases you've

got a lot more people dying and then you've just got bodies everywhere I believe it's

become a bit of a problem in India people burning bodies on the Ganges yes so that's

so that's what I think that's a brilliant suggestion I love that such I'm gonna make

a note of that let me just make a note here burn mr. Duncan on bonfire there we go that's

sorted out again I'm not allowed to do that the law won't allow me to do that and anyway

you're overlooking the fact that I would be quite upset and distraught if something had

happened to you the last thing I'd want to do is drag your body into the garden and burned

it or do anything with it so I don't have to arrange my own funeral there's there's

no need to do that I can just get mr. Steve to to put me on the compost heap now you see

that you prearranged your own funeral to to so that the people that you've left behind

yeah who are caught up in grief and distress okay don't have to suddenly make all these

arranged because you've already made the arrangements for them that's the whole point of it okay

so that it just becomes you know they just make one phone call and then suddenly it's

and then everything is taken care of without them having to worry about having to dispose

of your dead body I don't know how we got into this subject mr. Duncan it's very dark

well I got onto this subject but by having this through my door the other day see that

that's why we're talking about that we don't want to see that coming through your door

you don't have to be reminded of death I must admit I it didn't cheer me up he made the

rest of my day very gloomy now both of us this week we have reapplied for our passports

haven't we Steve we have indeed we have we have reapplied for the passports now we decided

to take our own pictures for our passports didn't we yes because you can now the new

application process for renewing your passport in the UK means you can do it all online and

instead of having to go to one of those booths outside the post office where you have to

sit draw the curtain across and sit there and wait for the the flashes and then wait

five minutes for the photograph to be developed and they come out you can now do it yourself

if you've got a smartphone and then and then you can use that photograph to apply for your

passport so you can do it at home now you can just take a picture on your smartphone

and send it to them that's right would you like to have a look at the passport photos

Oh mr. Duncan that we have used would you like to see mr. Steve's passport photo no

this is the actual passport photo that Steve has used for his passport I know you're gonna

kill me for this I think Steve might kill me literally he's going to rather know here

we go it's not on the screen yet don't get too carried away Steve it's not there yet

but it is now oh my goodness none of us like looking at our passport photographs do we

you know what that looks like Steve that looks like a wanted poster well it's always a source

of fun hilarity humor when when you're going on holiday and you're there with your friends

or work colleagues for example if you're going on a work trip and everybody wants to look

at your passport photograph because they want to look at it and laugh because nobody takes

a good passport photograph because of course you have to there are certain rules you have

to abide by you're not allowed to smile you're not allowed to have any expressions and of

course everybody feels you feel self-conscious when you're having a passport photograph taken

and what I'm waiting for mr. Duncan is for you to put up your passport photograph that

really will I think cause a reaction oh the viewers because I've got to say and I will

say it's probably the worst passport photograph I've ever seen and cause a great deal of hilarity

to myself so here is usually to talk in a stranger's way sometimes it will cause some

hilarity to myself who talks like that well the art of being able to talk live mr. Duncan

is is not to have any hesitation oh okay and but you must complete your sentences without

hesitation okay and that is what I'm attempting to do but when you do that of course sometimes

you use words and phrases which you may not use in normal English oh I see we're getting

some questions about the passport now the passport Thank You Sergio the passport is

not sorry are we - are we doing two separate livestreams here now the passport is nothing

to do with brexit so which we're getting new passports because mine has expired and Steve's

is about to expire yes so that's the reason why so we are we are renewing our passports

glasses on my passport photograph but they don't even let you wear your spectacles anymore

so that's the reason why I it's just very strange it doesn't look like me that is not

me I don't know I don't know what frame of mind you worry mr. doing I don't know it and

there Steve's this is terrible we should never show these photographs ever again ever but

they are like you might get in they are I might get in but you won't oh who says that

that's it I'll see the thing is in some countries that that look is probably very sexy I'm not

some words later on but first of all here here's an interesting question Steve and this

is something I've noticed whenever you see a news report about the United States and

and maybe they go to a local area where people live maybe a residential area I've noticed

one thing that's very peculiar about people in the United States and that's that quite

often they will have flags or one flag outside their house of the American flag the Stars

and Stripes now it's interesting isn't it because you never see that here in the UK

do you very rarely very rarely do you see people putting their that putting flanks if

you put a flag up in your garden it means you're patriotic yes very patriotic you you're

very patriotic about your country so you you you're proud to be American if you're putting

up an American flag in your garden it means you're very proud and I think a lot of American

people are very proud to be American whereas I think in this country we've forgotten what

it's like to be proud of being British because now it's seen as a negative you're seen as

you're seen as being maybe extreme in your views if you if you express any kind of patriotism

and of course since the Second World War it's been discouraged patriotism and nationalism

which are often associated with each other has been has been something that has been

discouraged since the Second World War because it can they think that it leads to it was

certainly nationalism can lead to Wars can't it so yeah it's being discouraged on I would

say is the word yes Ypres cause put up the George Cross don't they at certain times the

year in the UK some people will fly the George Cross in their garden but they're often seen

as maybe a bit odd okay and maybe they would be seen as people having extreme views yes

I don't think the same applies in America no that's the strange thing isn't it that

well that's the point I'm making in the United States it's it's seen as a positive thing

to do yes in certain parts of the United States maybe in the south maybe it occurs more often

but you might see this flag sometimes flown you can see today I'm wearing my union flag

but quite often this flag is seen as being a little controversial isn't it that's the

Union Jack isn't it so not it's called the Union flag but if you are in distress you

fly it upside down and then it's called the Union Jack ah so you only call it the Union

Jack when it is being flown in distress if you are in trouble otherwise it's called the

Union flag maybe you should fly it upside down now mr. Duncan well not just that but

of course just a few days left before Brexit as well how many days nineteen days to go

we're all sick of it but this week they keep saying every week they say it's a crucial

week 19 days before Brexit nothing's gonna happen I don't think it just gets more and

more complicated as every week passes and I think the consensus of opinion now is that

we're probably going to get apply for an extension because basically we can't sort it out between

now and the end of March yes well it's just 19 days together nobody wants to vote on the

deal that's been worked out between Theresa May and and Europe but that so nobody wants

to the Parliament won't vote to go ahead with that but then they won't vote to go ahead

with a No Deal Brexit so if they won't vote for the deal and they won't vote for leaving

Europe without a deal there's only one alternative and that's to vote for an extension and then

hope to come up with another deal by the end of that extend well when they say extension

they want to actually delay Brexit actually occurring for a few more months or even years

yes but on Tuesday the vote will be taking place we will find out on Tuesday what's going

to happen they are going to vote in the houses of parliament in London whether or not to

extend Brexit or just to get on with it Jeff's got a rainbow flag and yes I've got one too

words now Steve words to do with numbers now can I just confess to you now that I was not

very good at maths at school I was absolutely awful at maths I remember mr. West actually

I could even remember the name of the teacher who used to teach me maths at high school

I was absolutely awful it maths and he would often shout at me he would say Duncan pay

attention and I would always be looking out the window I'd be watching the birds flying

by or staring at the clouds floating across the sky and mr. West would always get very

angry with me during my maths class and I was absolutely rubbish at maths it's true

even now I'm terrible at maths I can't add anything up in my head I don't know why I

have I think what I have and this this might be a real thing Steve I think I have numeric

blindness that's what I think so I think I'm actually blind to numbers so I think that

I can see the numbers but when it comes to actually adding them up I don't have the ability

to get these on so here is mr. Steve now with some words to do with the subject that we

are talking about today Oh Daffy says he wants a coffee that's very interesting coming to

me and I agree I think I need one as well right no words connected with numbers here's

the first one days are numbered so there I've put some dots there so indicating that we

could put another word in front so we might say your days are numbered her days are numbered

his days are numbered it means that you're putting a limit on something a time limit

and it's usually a phrase which is used as a warning so if you said something for example

his days are numbered in this company since he argued with the boss so you're saying there

that he's going to be sacked from his job so from this point onwards you can probably

count the number of days that he would be working in this company so previously he'd

been working for the company you didn't know how long he might work for but he does something

or she does something and certainly their days are numbered it means that at a fixed

point in time something is going to happen if you don't improve your performance soon

at this company your days will be numbered so that's a warning to say you'd better start

getting good at your job or you're gonna be leaving so it's putting it it's putting a

limit on the number of days you might be doing something it's used as a warning your days

are numbered right so here's another is a phrase which is similar to that one's number

is up so you're one meaning you or me so one is finished what it means is that when you

say that your number is up it means that when it can mean that you're going to you're about

to die it means that you're finished ruined or about to die your numbers up I know you

have been stealing from the company you're saying to somebody at work I know you've been

stealing from the company your numbers up so you're gonna be sacked from the job that's

the last time he cheats on me his numbers up so you're gonna divorce him because he's

been cheating on you oh so yes it can be that's a very British phrase your numbers up your

numbers up it means act literally could mean somebody's about to die would you agree mr.

Duncan mr. Duncan wanders off. you can do a number on somebody if you do a number on

somebody that means to defeat them or humiliate them a trick or manipulate them in a calculated

way to do a number on somebody for example John said he would be interested in the new

oh I can't read my own writing mr. Duncan Betty has stolen my boyfriend she's really done

a number on me so Betty's stolen somebody's boyfriend and it means that she's been talking

to your boyfriend behind your back and she's stolen him away from you so she's done a number

on you she's humiliated you tricked you manipulated you in some way so that's that one to do a

number on somebody it means that you manipulate somebody in some way okay right to get somebody's

number this doesn't mean to get somebody's telephone number but if you get someone's

number it means you understand how they think how they operate and it's usually referred

to people's bad behavior you know somebody's real character or their motives you you get

somebody's number so he keeps phone for example he keeps phoning me for a chat pretending

to be my friend but I know he's trying to find out how our team operates successfully

I've got his number so it's somebody he's phoning you for a chat but he's trying to

find out some information in order to get one over on you and in order to find out why

you're so successful so you've got his number you've made a note of something yes you've

made a note of something he found out how somebody's operating in an unscrupulous way

to try and usurp you is another word to try and get one over on you to do to do better

than you are you've got somebody's number if somebody's a bad person or if they're secretive

you and you find out what they read you can say huh I've got your number I know what you're

like I know what your behaviors really layered you can say that you've noted something I've

noted it yeah and and I will remember this element I've got your number so if yeah I

could say that to mr. Duncan I've got your number I know what you're after so if you

do something by the numbers to do something by the numbers that means you perform a task

by following a strict set of rules or guidelines or procedures so if you say to somebody do

something I want you to do something by the numbers it means you want them to follow a

strict procedure in order to avoid or to minimize the risk of making any mistakes so for example

you might be a team coach to a football team and you might say before the game right we've

got to win this game so let's do it by the numbers so what you're saying there is everybody

work and do what they're supposed to do their individual part and the team don't go off

and do something that you're not supposed to do everybody stick to their set task and

then we will be successful do something by the numbers or you know that you could use

that the phrase do it by the book which is another sort of a sin a synonym of that yes

do this by the numbers which means you don't go off don't go off and do your own thing

do it by a strict set of rules and guidelines and stick to that mr. Duncan you were going

to say something I was to do something accurately as well we can say you do it by it by the

numbers or by the number yes but we're not referring to action numbers just to do something

by the numbers means you do something accurately yes and you thought you you follow what you're

supposed to do what is it what is the strict set of guidelines that will enable that tasks

have become to be done successfully yes know what it reminds me of it reminds me of when

I was little and and we used to do these things where you would paint a picture but but the

the picture was already there in the form of a sketch and then each little area where

you would put the colors have a little number painting by numbers painting by numbers painting

them so yes it's it's a very similar thing so you have to do something very accurately

or in a certain way or you do it in your way that it's supposed to be done so you might

often said to like teams and there's a group when there's a team and you might have like

in a football team for example hmm you've got so many people in that football team and

they've all got different roles that they need to perform you've got a a goalkeeper

and you've got a striker and everyone everyone's got task routes they're good at and which

they perform best at and and for a team to operate successfully everybody has to do their

part yes and not try and do somebody else's job because that's when it all falls apart

so if you do things by the numbers it means everybody in that team is performing successfully

and performing according to how they're supposed to have what they were trained to do what

they're best at another one a nice little number a nice little number that's got two

meanings it can actually mean a person usually a woman oh she's a she's a a nice little number

it just means an attractive person really she's a nut she's a cute little number that

one you don't usually say that towards a man you usually say it about a woman a nice little

number a person really a nice person or usually means cute or sexy but it's also used can

be used to describe an admired object usually usually an item of clothing

that's a nice little number you're wearing and you might say yes it's by Dior and little number hues

refer to a nice dress wouldn't you say mr. Duncan yes nice little number something that's

attractive to the eye or something that looks nice so a person might look nice quite often

a female or an item of clothing or maybe a nice little car well that's and that's a nice

little number yes usually it's clothing and was it Audrey Hepburn that used to wear that

who wore that iconic black dress in a lot of her films and that would that you would

refer to that as a nice little number hmm oh that's a nice number you've got on you

can say that you can say that to people hmm good right so that's all to do with numbers

now I've got some other phrases which are related to numbers a ballpark figure huh a

ballpark number is an estimate of what the actual figure will be it's a best guess really

when you there are a lot of variables and you can't were to work out exactly what something

will cost or how many for example you might give a ballpark figure how much will it cost

to repair the damage to my car you might say to somebody in a garage and they might say

well I can't tell you exactly now because there are so many damaged parts well and then

you might say well can you give me a ballpark figure you're really saying can you give me

an estimate and they might say oh it'll be two thousand pounds I think they're about

that's my ballpark figure so the ballpark is another example the ballpark figure for

building the new nuclear power station is 200 million you don't know how much exactly

it's going to cost to build that nuclear power station so many variables involved the ballpark

figures 200 million oh well I don't have much it cost to build a nuclear power station it's

a lot of money and they always underestimate is that building projects isn't it building

projects they're always quite often underestimated but the ballpark figure could be roughly this

amount you haven't worked it out exactly you're just taking a best guess so when we refer

to a ballpark figure it is a rough estimate we are making a rough guess we are here's

another one a quantum leap a quantum leap that means to make a significant improvement

a significant measurable improvement or a dramatic enhancement a quantum leap quantum

of course comes from the word or the word quantity is very similar to the word quantity

which is something which is a measurable amount so for example John has shown a quantum leap

in his sales performance and in and should get a pay rise so what John has done is he's

shown of real measurable significant improvement in his sales results and as a result of that

he's been recommended for a pay rise the 2019 Ford Mustang model is a quantum leap ahead

from the 2017 model so what you're saying is that the the new model has has made significant

improvements real measurable improvements a quantum leap in its performance which is

interesting because then you think that would be derived from the sort of physics phrase

quantum but it doesn't really derive from that although the word quantum means a small

measurable amount of energy in physics a quantum is is is a measurement of energy it's actually

a very small measurement of energy so it's therefore not really related to the term quantum

leap which I think probably comes from the word quantity which means a measurable amount

so if you make mr. Duncan has made a quantum leap forward in the new presentation of his

live English streams whoo there we go so when I think of quantum leap I always think of

my one of my most favorite TV shows from the 1990s which was a show called quantum leap

it was about a guy that could that could go back in time and he would put things right

that once went wrong quantum leap Scott Bakula and he was always hoping that the next leap

of Bangala he would always hope that the next leap would be the leap home do you remember

that program I I love that program you don't like it I don't know why you seemed that you

seem to have a problem with Scott Scott Bakula I'm not a fan why don't you like him? he's

all right nobody's in now he's in he's in CSI CSI Texas or whatever it's cold I don't actually

watch it so yes of the implications behind the title of that program is that it's something

to do with physics oh it's New Orleans it’s CSI New Orleans right okay you mentioning

a lot you're promoting a lot of programmes today mr. dink I'm not promoting anything

yes quantum physics it's nothing to do with that quantum physics is it's about the study

of very small particles like atoms or subatomic particles thing things that are even smaller

than atoms yes that's quantum mechanics that's really really small very small as opposed

to sort of the study of large physical objects so two different branches of physics anyway

we don't get into that what's the opposite then what's the opposite well they call it's

more like classical physics where you're where you're looking at the effects of gravity and

motion on large objects so big physics is just basically physics but very very tiny

small physics is the other one yes because we've pretty much got the movement of large

objects sorted in terms of is very easy to get we can calculate all that now they'll

have planets move we know how for example if I drop this piece of paper it's we can

measure that it's all that's all been sorted out inertia and all that sort of acceleration

of large physical objects that we can see but when it comes comes to the quantum world

ie very small particles that we can't see nuclei and electrons and things like that

they they don't follow the same rules and as yet physics has yet to be able to marry

those two theories of the theories of La how a large objects move and small particles move

they haven't that we haven't got this theory of everything which there anyway we're getting

distracted mister don't know I've got a couple of it seems as if you're you are venturing

into areas that are unknown to you but I'm not I'm not a physicist no but I do know that

they are looking for the theory of everything which which marries those two branches of

physics together okay right he's a couple of words that are to do with quantities okay

a dozen a dozen mr. Duncan now this is a this is a phrase that we grew up with I don't know

but quite a lot because that this is an old sort of way of measuring things it doesn't

what is it doesn't if you see does and what does that mean to you how many objects and

are a dozen I just love the way you say that that's sort of a thing that you heard when

you were growing up I think we still you still say dozen yes we do it's a very it's a very

old based on a very old system measurement yeah we're the number 12 that's a is is used

yes so it's dozen means 12 we say dozen so if you want a dozen of something you want

12 of yes of that item exactly and you know what a baker's dozen is mr. Duncan a baker's

dozen so if I go into the baker's shop and I ask for a baker's dozen that normally means

six of something oh no mr. ding ok yes what I thought is it you know I've always thought

that so is it 13 things 13 things yes yes half a dozen it is 6 half a dozen doesn't

it six half a dozen a dozen is 12 half a dozen is 6 a baker's dozen which we don't really

use that phrase anymore very much I haven't heard it used for years but if you've ever

heard it means 13 because originally apparently people hundreds of years ago people were worried

about they wanted 12 or so it say they wanted 12 loaves of bread okay but sometimes they

thought they were getting diddled by the baker because maybe one of them was burnt they owned

yet they only ended up with 11 so you do realize that nowadays being diddled means something

else well it means to be yes I mean the way the way I'm using the phrase is it means that

you've been done out of something you've been you thought you were getting 12 but you only

got 11 so you know somebody you've stolen one off year the person who runs our local

bakery shop got very worried then and when we said that we we haven't been diddles by

uh apparently Bank is used to used to if somebody wanted 12 or something 12 rolls or 12 loaves

of bread they do 13 and then if they'd baked 13 then if one of them was burnt or there's

something wrong with it they'd still have 12 to be able to give to whoever ordered the

12 so that's that's what they used to do yes 12 is a very handy it's the most ancient way

measure form of measurement is 12 it goes back thousands of years because it's actually

quite a quieter there are it's quite a nice way of measuring things and when we've got

the metric system now based on 210 isn't it but 12 is a is it's a very we still buy a

dozen eggs don't worry hmm or half a dozen eggs you don't buy 10 eggs or 5 eggs and I

think there's a very good reason for that because if you if you're packaging things

up it's much easier to package things in sixes and twelves than it is in fives and tens because

if you think about it you end up you try and arrange if you arrange six eggs in a box it's

quite neat it's two rows of three whereas if you were to try and sell five eggs you

would have three and then an odd - it would look weird in the box you'd be wasting packaging

so it's much easier to to divide 12 well 12 again 12 can be subdivided many times so you

can divide 12 by 2 by 3 and by 4 wheras you can only divide 10 by sort of 2 and 5 so it's

much easy to divide things 12 up so that's why they still use it because it's just easier

and for some reason your brain it is easier to think apparently as well they used to count

12 it was easy to count on one hand because you hear 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 you could

count easily like that if you didn't have a pen and paper which they wouldn't have done

hundreds of years ago anyway I'm getting I'm going off-piste so to speak a gross but what's

a gross quickly put up the live chat what is it gross wait there Steve we're there Steve

let me just show you something that is gross here's something that's very it's an another

meaning of the word gross there's something that's gross something which is unattractive
