my seasonal allergy.

It is to do with the pollen.

As it floats around in the air, it goes up.

My nose and it makes me sneeze.

And generally I feel unwell when it happens.

So it isn't a virus. It's nothing like that.

It is my seasonal allergy.

And because this year we have so much pollen in the air,

it seems to be everywhere.

That is the reason why I think I am suffering

extra badly this year.

I think so because everything is really, really coming out strong.

And of course every time we have the rain and then it dries

out, all of the plants and trees, they produce even more pollen.

So it doesn't stop.

Even if it rains, it doesn't mean that the pollen will disappear.

We have, I suppose I would say it is an interesting subject,

part of the English language

means that sometimes you have to to describe

or name certain sounds.

There are many sounds around us,

including the cuckoo, cuckoo,

cuckoo is an interesting word because not only does it

describe the bird, it also sounds like

the sound that the bird makes.

And we call that type of bird imitative.

It imitates the sound of something.

So in the English language there are words

that sound or imitate,

like the thing it is describing,

quite often with certain sounds, certain noises.

You will find that quite often imitative words are used.

So the actual noun or the thing we are describing

or naming sounds exactly or very similar

to the sound that it is naming.

It's not that confusing.

In fact, I can safely say that all will be

clear later on when we have a look,

and also we have a listen as well to some of the sounds

and the imitative words that exist

in the English language.

Today we are looking at an interesting part of the English language.

English makes up all sorts of things,

lots of subjects, lots of ways of describing things.

And I suppose in our everyday lives

we often describe sounds

the way things sound,

the sound that something makes.

So I thought today we would look at imitative words.

Words that

sound or

imitate the thing that they are naming,

and that is what we are going to do today.

So that is today's subject.

For those wondering what it is we are looking at imitative words.

Words that describe a sound.

And I suppose I should warn you now that there are some noises today.

Today's live stream contains loud noises.

Some of the noises will be loud, some of them soft.

Some of them might be very pleasant indeed.

So we are looking at imitative

English words.

I will show you the first one and then you will.

You will understand what is going to happen.

So here it is.

The first imitative word.

It is a word that is often used when we hear something

that suddenly makes a very loud

and quite often short sound.

The word is.

Bang,

bang.

So when you think about it, this particular word

actually sounds like the thing it is describing.

Something will go

bang a sudden bang.

Maybe your neighbour

is throwing things around next door.

Maybe he is having an argument with his wife.

You might suddenly hear a loud bang.

It could be anything really.

It could be.

Maybe he's kicking the door with his foot, or maybe he's gone in,

gone round the back of the house with his shotgun.

Who knows?

So today's first imitative sound is

bang.

Something goes bang.

It sounds like the actual noise it is describing.

And these words do to do exist in English.

There are a lot of these words in the English language.

Many, in fact, there might be more than you realise.

Here is the next one.

The next imitative sound.

Are you ready?

So this also is a loud one.

Quite loud, in fact.

Boom boom.

Quite often when we describe the word boom,

we normally mean something that is sudden, rather like a bang.

Very similar to a bang, but normally

the frequency is much lower.

It is a lower frequency,

even though the sound itself is still loud.

Boom.

And again, as you can hear,

that particular sound is described perfectly

by this particular word

because it sounds like

the noise it is describing,

we boom.

Of course, we can use this word in other ways as well.

Besides the sound, the word boom could also be used

to describe something that is going well.

Maybe you are selling more products of a certain type.

Maybe your company is suddenly doing well.

You can say that you are having a boom.

So this particular word can be used in more than one way.

But here we are using it as the sound.

The imitative sound that goes like this.

If you are wearing

headphones at the moment.

If you are wearing your headphones, I do apologise.

Here's another one.

This one is not quite so loud.

This is also an imitative word.

The the name of the word

is also the sound that it makes.

The word is. Pop.

Pop. It's a very short,

very brief sound.

Here it is again.

Did you hear it?

I know it's not very loud, but it is a type of word,

something that goes pop.

We often use this word

maybe a small thing is going pop.

Something will burst.

Maybe a bubble that is floating around

will go pop.

It sounds like the word.

So again, a very good example of an imitative word.

The word pop sounds like the thing it is describing.

And there it was.

Here's another one.

This one is more dramatic, a very dramatic word

to describe a very

dramatic thing.

Did you get that one?

It was very short.

Here it is again.

One more time.

Did you get it?

Woosh!

Whoosh!

So the sound of that noise, the actual sound

itself, is very similar to the word that describes it.

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

I wish there was a sudden whoosh

of air through the room.

Maybe something that is moving very quickly

might also make that sound as it goes by.

Something will.

Woosh by it will go by fast.

So again, we can use this word in many ways to describe the sound.

But also if something is moving fast,

we can say that it whooshes.

Or she wished

past the car whooshed by.

It went by very quickly, very

fast.

Here is another one.

Oh, I like this one.

So again, this might be noisy if you are wearing headphones.

At the moment I'm giving you a warning.

Maybe you are running along the road.

Maybe you are having a lovely jog, but then suddenly you slip,

you fall, you stumble and oh.

You break your leg.

One of your bones cracks.

The word is.

Crack,

crack the sound of something breaking.

The sound of something snapping.

Or it will crack.

So maybe a thing that you have broken.

Or the sound that it makes.

As it happens, a crack.

Maybe something

that appears in a rock, or maybe an a mountain.

There might be a large crack.

So it is describing the appearance of something.

But in this case we are using the word

to describe the sound.

The sound of something cracking ice.

Of course, if you step onto the ice, it might also

crack as you step onto it.

So a very good word

to describe the sound of something breaking suddenly.

Or maybe if something is breaking gradually.

In many places, we can say that

it is starting to crack.

The sound is very distinctive.

The sound of something cracking.

Here's another one.

This is a friendly noise, a lovely sound, and once again,

the word that we use to describe it is imitative.

It sounds like the noise it is naming.

Oh that's noise.

Quite often you will hear that sound.

Maybe if you are waiting in a queue

and someone wants to call you,

or maybe if you are checking in

to a hotel, maybe you've just arrived and you,

you come to the reception area, but but there's nobody there.

So you have to get someone's attention.

You have to ring

a bell and the bell will go.

Ding d

I n g ding.

So the actual word sounds like the sound itself.

And that is why we call them

imitative words.

Here's another word, a very interesting word.

Maybe something you are pushing along the street.

Maybe you are pushing your bike

and one of the wheels is making a noise.

Something like this.

Once again, for those

who didn't see it or hear it.

Squeak, squeak

something will squeak. Eek!

So again, it's very interesting how some words

actually sound like the thing

they are describing.

Squeak.

Maybe an old wheel, maybe a door,

maybe a gate outside your house.

It is very squeaky.

It will.

Squeak.

Something will squeak.

Today we are looking at imitative words.

Of course, the sound of a mouse

is often described as a squeak as well.

Here's another one.

Maybe you are pouring a lovely drink.

Maybe something cool.

Maybe you are having some Pepsi, or some Coca Cola,

or some fizzy water.

The sound goes something like this.

I like that sound.

So as you pour the drink, it will

fizz.

Fizz the sound of the bubbles appearing from the drink

as you pour it.

The word is.

Fizz.

Something will fizz.

It will fizz.

Maybe a fizzy drink.

As you pour the drink, it will make a very distinctive sound.

The sound is fizz.

Here's another one.

Maybe if you are operating

some type of electrical device,

you might hear this sound.

Hum hum.

So if you are listening to that

on a mobile phone, you might not even hear it

because as you know, mobile

phones are not very good at reproducing low frequencies.

They will only reproduce high frequencies

or high tones.

So I will play it again for you.

The word is hum.

Something like that.

Maybe a motor.

Maybe your refrigerator is making that particular sound.

The sound is hum,

your refrigerator is humming.

The sound it makes is hum.

It can also be a very annoying

sound as well.

All of today's

words, by the way, are imitative.

They name the sound,

and the word itself also sounds like the thing it is describing.

Here is another one.

This one is very dramatic.

Here it comes.

Crash, crash.

Maybe two things collide with each other.

They crash into each other.

Two things crash together.

So the word is crash.

And also the sound is.

Crash.

It sounds very much like

the word that describes it.

Two things that smash into each other.

They crash.

Maybe you are on the beach and you can

hear the waves crashing

against the rocks.

Crash two collide, two things collide.

Or maybe one thing collides with another.

The sound produced is quite often

like this.

Crash.

It is a good example of an imitative word.

Maybe you are busy at the office.

Maybe you are.

You are having to sort through lots of paper,

lots of different types of paper work.

You might hear this sound.

The word is Russell.

Russell.

To move things gently.

So again,

this is a very good example of a word that describes the sound,

but also sounds very similar

to the noise it is describing.

Isn't that strange?

It does happen quite often in English, and that is why we call them

imitate active words, because the word itself

describes the sound and it actually

describes it very

well because it sounds just like it.

Here is another one.

There was something I wanted to say about this sound,

but I'm not going to say it because it always annoys people.

So here is the next sound.

You have to listen very carefully.

Did you miss it?

Here it is again.

Plop.

Plop!

Maybe you are dropping something into

a lake stream.

You are throwing a stone

into the water.

The sound it makes is like this.

Plop!

The thing will go into the water

and that is the sound it makes

are going to have a quick break

so I can drink some water

and clear my throat for a few moments.

Another imitative English word.

I wonder if you can guess which animal this is.

So you're going to hear a sound now, you can hear it right now.

And you have to guess what the the actual animal is as well.

So the next word is

what?

You're probably thinking, Mr.

Duncan. What was that?

It didn't sound very, very happy.

Here it is again. Oh.

The word is wine.

Wine.

My name.

Hmhm.

Wine. Wine.

So again, this word very cleverly describes the sound,

while at the same time sounding

like the actual sound it is describing.

Wine.

Is it a pig, Mr.

Duncan? It is not a pig.

It is another type of animal

that you might find in the wild

world.

It is also a type of animal that you don't often hear.

You might hear it at night sometimes.

So there is another clue.

I wonder if you know what it is one more time.

Oh oh.

It is.

A fox,

Mr. Duncan.

We can't believe it.

Yes, so that is what a fox sounds like.

You don't hear foxes very often, but sometimes they might make

little sounds in the night if they are playing with their young.

If they are calling out to another fox, that is the sound you might hear.

But the word we are talking about is vine wine.

Maybe a person will complain about something.

They will keep complaining again and again about something.

They whine, oh, it's not fair.

Oh, it's not fair. I want a new phone.

Oh, it's not fair.

My neighbour has a better car than me.

Oh it's nothing.

They whine, they complain,

they make this sort of sound.

Oh, oh.

To be unhappy about something

means you might whine.

You might complain.

Here's another one.

Maybe in the morning you are having your breakfast.

You are making yourself something delicious.

Maybe you are frying something for breakfast,

maybe some sausages.

I like that sound.

The sound in the morning when you are frying something,

maybe you are having an egg.

Maybe you are frying an egg or some sausages.

Or maybe a nice big piece of bacon.

This is the sound you will hear.

Sizzle, sizzle

and another interesting point

to make about these types of words is they sound very similar

to what they are describing, and I think this is

a very good example, in fact, of that type of imitative word.

It's also making me feel hungry as well.

Sizzle, sizzle.

Sizzle I like it.

Here's another one.

Maybe you are asleep at night

and then suddenly a sound disturbs you.

You hear something go.

What was that?

Did you hear that?

There is something moving around the house.

The word is bump.

Bump again.

Bump the sound it makes bump.

The word also sounds

the same as the sound itself.

Like this

bump.

So again, we have a very good example of an imitative word.

There are in fact lots of imitative words

in the English language, and these are just a few of them.

You might also know others as well.

You might find that there are lots of these words.

Some of them might be ones I haven't mentioned today.

That was another word.

It sounds very similar

to what it is describing.

Tap, tap.

Maybe.

You tap.

Your phone.

Maybe you are typing something.

Maybe you are selecting an application on your phone

so you will tap

tap your phone.

You are choosing something you are

looking for something.

Like that.

The sound it makes is also tap.

You tap

your phone.

Again, this is a very good example of an imitative sound,

and in this case the word is tap.

Because it sounds like

the noise it is describing.

Here's another one.

Now this next sound can be described in more than one way.

We can call it one thing or another.

Ping

or ting?

Ping or ting.

Here it is again.

It sounds very similar to your microwave oven,

so maybe you're putting something in the microwave

and you are waiting for it to finish.

You will wait for this particular sound.

That's the sound I'm waiting for

because that means my pizza is ready to be eaten.

So ping

or ting because both of those words

sound the same as the noise they are describing.

Here's another one.

This is something you will do quite often

when you are using your computer.

If you are using your mouse, you will often.

Click.

You click on something.

Here it is again.

You are choosing a website.

You are selecting a file.

You are choosing something on your computer using your mouse.

Quite often you will

click on something.

Click again.

Very interesting because those two things are very similar.

The word is very similar

to the sound that it describes.

It is a very good example of an imitative word.

You click on something.

Here is another word.

Once again, it sounds very similar to what it is describing.

The word is.

Thud,

thud a sharp sudden sound as one thing

knocks into something else.

Thud.

Maybe someone falls from a ladder

and they hit the ground with a very loud thud.

That is the sound they make as they fall,

as they fall and then they hit the ground.

They hit the ground and make a large

thud.

It is not a good sound.

It is not a sound that you ever want to hear,

to be honest with you, because it normally means

something bad has happened quite often.

Here's another one.

Something that describes a certain type of animal

when it is making a noise or sound, a certain type of reptile,

it is.

Full of thoughts.

It can also mean the sound of air

escaping from a tire.

If if the air is suddenly coming out

under pressure, you can use the word hiss.

So I suppose that might be the sound of the clock

outside in Much Wenlock at 3:00.

Again, another interesting word

that sounds very similar to the thing it is describing.

The sound of a bell going.

Boom!

And we have one more,

one more sound before I go.

And here is one that you will hear quite often when a person is moving

something metallic, or maybe something

that has a lot

of things together, normally, if they are made of metal.

The thing is.

Jingle, jingle.

Maybe you have some keys in your pocket

and as you walk along you can hear the sound.

Jingle, jingle.

It is an interesting sound.

Maybe you are holding a piece of chain.

Lots of links joining the chain together, and quite often

the sound that you hear is very similar

to this.

Jingle, jingle.

And that is today's final

imitative English sound.

And I am sure that you are going to say Mr.

Duncan, there are many more.

There are many more words in English that sound like

the thing it is describing.

And I think you might be right.

I'm sure there are others.

In fact, I know there are others, probably hundreds.

So that was today's final sound,

and I'm sure you can think of lots of others as well.
