Here we are again we are back yes oh  a very interesting view outside today  

it is gloomy very gray and rather damp here we are  again yes we are back live as live can be i hope  

you are feeling super duper and you are ready to  listen to some more english and of course i hope  

you will be getting involved with today's live  stream yes it is english addict coming to you live  

from the birthplace of the english language which  just happens to be can you guess yes it's england

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how  are you today are you okay i really hope so  

are you happy i hope you are feeling happy today  i'm not too bad i am a little excited first of all  

i will mention this i'm excited because this  week i've made some changes to my computer i've  

actually installed some hardware the first time  i've ever tried to put something in the computer  

a piece of hardware a device and this particular  device is helping me to have my cameras working  

smoothly it is something that i've updated during  the week but the most exciting thing of all is i  

did it myself i actually opened up my computer  and i installed the piece of hardware myself  

so i am feeling pretty proud i'm feeling  very proud of myself that i've been able  

to do some computer maintenance by myself  without any help from anyone else whatsoever  

so here we are then yes my  name is mr duncan i'm duncan

you may have heard of me you may not there  is a pretty good chance that you've never  

heard of me in which case hello i talk about  the english language i love english you might  

even say that i am an english addict just like  it says up there on the screen so i hope you are  

feeling good today yes we are back together  again i like talking about english i don't  

know why i find the english language rather  fascinating because there are so many words  

and it's always interesting to find out  where certain english words came from  

where they came from how they became the  words that they are and where they originated  

of course i know what you're going to say mr  duncan many english words came from germanic  

that might be true but also many have evolved  via other languages as well from latin  

and greek so there are many places where english  words have come from or where they originated a  

lot of french words we do use a lot of french  words in english and quite often we use them  

in their actual state as they are pronounced  and used in french for example connoisseur  

a connoisseur is an expert in a particular  field so when we talk about a connoisseur  

we are talking about a person who has expertise  in a certain subject i suppose another word  

i could mention is silhouette silhouette  the outline of a person you can't see them  

you can't see the detail but you can see  the outline of that person their silhouette  

yes we have made it all the way to the  end of another weekend it is very nice  

to see you all here today and don't forget we  have lots of things coming up over the next  

two hours a lot of people ask mr duncan  why do you make your live streams so long  

and my answer is why not why not make them long

to be honest with you i wish i could stay  on for longer i would love to do four hours  

five hours perhaps but i think maybe that would  be going too far today we have lots of things to  

talk about we are talking about fighting or more  precisely words and phrases connected to the word  

fight and you might be surprised to find  out how many ways we can use a word that  

describes an action that that seems to be going  on quite a lot in the world have you noticed every  

time you turn the news on every time you switch  on your tv or go onto the internet there is always  

a news story about one group of people fighting  another disagreeing maybe politics maybe over  

land perhaps religion comes into it maybe there  are people who are against a certain thing  

and they are fighting against another  group who are for that particular thing  

it happens all the time so the word fight is what  we are looking at a little bit later on fight  

we also have mr steve here later on i hope  mr steve and myself will not be fighting  

sometimes we do disagree but you will  be pleased to hear that we never fight  

we never start hitting or punching each other  we always manage to to resolve our differences  

and wouldn't it be lovely wouldn't it be nice i  know what you're going to say oh mr duncan you  

have your head in the clouds wouldn't it be lovely  if we could all resolve our differences sometimes  

the things we disagree on are so small and  insignificant or maybe sometimes silly we  

argue we fight we fall out we disagree over very  trivial things so it would be nice if we could all  

come together one day and just agree to disagree  wouldn't it be nice yes it is another weekend  

i hope you've had a good weekend we have made  it all the way to the end because it is sunday

photographs from your granddaughter's wedding  that took place a couple of weeks ago thank  

you very much and i am very moved by what you  said in your message i also feel the same way  

about you watching out there it is like a  family so i always view everyone especially my  

my loyal regular viewers i always feel as  if we've developed a sort of relationship  

over these years so thank you louis and thank  you for the photographs it was really good fun  

seeing your family and also yourself can i  just say you look very smart in your suit

i can't remember the last time i wore a suit i'm  trying to remember now when did i last wear a suit  

i think it may have been a wedding that  i attended maybe three or four years ago  

i think that is the last time i wore a suit of  course there are certain occasions when you wear  

a suit so you normally wear very smart  trousers and maybe a shirt and tie like this  

and also a very smart jacket or blazer and quite  often the trousers and the jacket will match  

so we often describe that as a suit and of  course quite often you will wear a pair of shoes  

normally black shoes you can wear other colours

which reminds me mr steve has a theory about  men who wear brown shoes with their suits

he has a very unusual theory mr steve believes  

that men who wear a suit with  brown shoes should not be trusted

i don't know where he gets these ideas from i  really don't but apparently that's what he thinks  

but the last time i wore a suit was a wedding of  course there are other occasions as i mentioned  

just you can go to go to a job interview so  if you attend a job interview even nowadays  

you will be expected to wear a suit  a tie you have to look very smart  

so you have to make a good impression i  suppose also funerals it is traditional  

for men to wear a suit when attending a funeral  and needless to say the funeral is a sombre  

affair and quite often people will be required  to wear dark clothes black normally or something  

dark quite often what else i suppose you could  wear a suit if you were staying in a nice hotel  

or now here's a good thing that i heard many  years ago i've never tried it but apparently  

if you go to an airport to catch a plane and you  are waiting if you are wearing a suit and tie  

they will automatically allow you to upgrade  

to first class to fill the seats so quite often  first class on an airplane is is is not full  

so i've heard this i don't know if it's true it  might not be true it might be completely fake  

and made up but i've heard if you go to an airport  to catch a plane and you are flying standard class  

or economy class and you are wearing a suit and  tie they will actually give you a first class seat  

is it true i think it was steve that told  me so it probably isn't true it's probably a

oh by the way i watched a very  interesting documentary last night  

about maria callas the most amazing singer  sadly no longer around but she was and i think  

she still is as far as i'm concerned the greatest  female singer ever it was a wonderful documentary  

it had some wonderful home movie clips  so things that have been filmed with her  

in her personal life and also some interviews as  well so maria callas featured last night on bbc  

and it was the most amazing documentary it  really was even though mr steve and myself  

we had to stay up until half past midnight so it  was after midnight when the documentary finished  

but absolutely incredible a wonderful voice and  sadly no longer around but brilliant hello to  

oh we have edit or edit hello edit  nice to see you here again today

oh by the way another thing we're talking  about later is time keeping are you good  

at keeping time so a person who is keeping  time or keeping good time is a person who often  

arrives before or at the right time or at the  correct time so a person who is a good time keeper  

is a person who is never late they are never late  for anything so what about you are you a good  

time keeper are you a person who is often  on time or are you often late so that is  

the first question today are you a good time  keeper are you often late for appointments

i'm going to be honest with you i am often late  for things i'm not very good at being on time  

for appointments it's a bit like going to a  party i never like to arrive at a party too early  

i always like to be a little bit late i don't  like to be the first person who arrives and then  

you have to sit around on your own like a fool so  i always like to arrive at parties a little later  

so if the person says be here at 8 o'clock i will  come at around about 8 30 or 8 45 so i always like  

to arrive when other people have already arrived  before me i never like to be the first person  

arriving at a party i don't like it because  you just sit there like an idiot waiting  

for everyone else to arrive so i don't like  that at all to be honest oh we are getting  

some messages coming through oh hello claudia  oh by the way i got your message and i hope you  

have a good time today with your brother i think  it's your brother you are spending some time with  

today rosa says oh i see rosa is a very good time  keeper i am never late i am a good time keeper

christian nino says i am not a good time keeper  i am often late one of the worst things you can  

ever do is be late for a job interview never  never never never never never never never never  

ever be late for a job interview because there is  a pretty good chance that you won't get the job  

you have already proved that you are not good  at turning up or appearing at the right time  

so never be late if you are  attending a job interview  

if you are going for a job interview always  make sure that you are on time in fact  

get there early because if you are late there is  a pretty good chance that you won't get the job

yes if you are going for a job interview  you have to make sure that you you know  

how long it takes to get there if you are  driving always leave the house much earlier  

than you need to so don't wait because you  might get stuck in traffic your train might  

be late or delayed or cancelled so always make  sure that you arrive at a job interview on time

in his opinion mr steve will be coming in a moment  so are you a good time keeper is the question we  

are asking well if a person is arriving at  the right time you might say that they are  

on time prompt precise they are exactly  on time they are punctual i like that word  

it's a fun word to say punctual punctual  a person who is always on time is punctual  

and you might say that a person who arrives at  the right time is on the dot i arrived on the dot  

it means i arrived at the right time and then of  course we have the opposites we have late a person  

who is not on time a person who is not a very  good time keeper can be described as late they are  

often late for their appointments they are often  late for work you might describe a person as tardy  

a person who is tardy is often late something that  has not arrived you can say that it is overdue  

so something overdue is something that  you are waiting or you are waiting for

something behind schedule is  something you are still waiting for  

or something you are still waiting to  be completed is behind shed you all  

and maybe you are in a hurry because you are  late we can say that you are running late you are  

running late and perhaps you have been delayed on  your way to work or on the way to an appointment  

we can say that you are held up you might be held  up in traffic you might be held up in a meeting  

you have been held up you have been  delayed you will be late here we go then

i'm just looking at something on my screen at the  moment another thing we're talking about later  

but i won't tell you just yet we will talk  about that a little bit later on oh by the way  

no sentence game today for those who don't like  the sentence game there is no sentence game here  

we go then an excerpt from one of my full english  lessons this is taken from full english number six

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are  you oh wait there a moment something's wrong here  

oh there you are i'm very sorry i was facing the  wrong way i had my back to you well here we are  

once again with another edition of mr duncan's  full english yes another serving of piping hot  

english is about to be served so please take  your seats and let the full english soiree begin  

oh by the way soiree is a french word  meaning evening meal or social gathering

can you see what sort of day it is  here the weather today is cold and icy  

there is frost on the ground and the  air is frigid the word frigid means  

cold it can also be used to describe a person  who is unemotional and cold-hearted if a person  

shows no affection towards others in any way or  seems distant and uninterested in making friends  

we can say that they are frigid the word  refrigerator derives from the word frigid  

and the word frigid derives from the latin word  for cold talking of which there is a harsh frost  

on the ground here today which is caused by  moisture freezing on the surface of the ground  

today is a chilly day it's an icy one it's  nippy it's colder than a penguin's breakfast

if i was given the choice between being hot or  feeling cold i know which one i would choose i'm  

not a fan of the cold weather i find going out on  a freezing day tiring your body uses up much more  

energy when it is cold so you get tired easily  your hands and feet become numb and if there is  

a cold wind too then your face will freeze to the  point where you cannot speak oh yes i'm very sure  

that if i was given the choice i would always  choose a hot day over a cold one every time

whilst walking out on a day like this you are  bound to come across some patches of ice you might  

even find a frozen area such as a pool or lake  there is an idiom in english that relates to ice  

if a person is doing something that might  get them into trouble we can say that they  

are skating on thin ice or treading on thin ice  this person is running the risk of being punished  

they are tempting fate by doing something  dangerous or risky the boss has noticed  

that you keep coming in late for work  you are really skating on thin ice

so there it was an excerpt from one of my full  english lessons and yes there are lots of lessons

are there mr steve another week has gone by i  have to be honest with you i'm gonna be honest  

it's been a busy week again it has it has did you  hear about the tennis by the way yes i did yes few  

records broken there well one record in particular  uh yes we won the was it the u.s open yes 44 years  

something like that yes 44 years since a lady from  a british woman one of everyone won the us open  

tennis i don't know much about tennis so please  don't don't assume that we know about tennis we  

know a little bit about it but yes pretty good  i know suddenly this girl's come from nowhere  

that's good and uh yes and uh everyone's suddenly  talking about it because you know we never do very  

well in tennis do we in the uk tradition you  know for years i think we did well sort of in  

sort of 1920 and we haven't really  done much since apart from of course  

uh one uh person from scotland uh but you know  we never do that well it's normally dominated by  

other countries so it's quite something for us  to suddenly win a significant tennis tournament  

well are we good at any any sports i i don't  i don't think british or or english athletes  

competitors i know i'm gonna get i'm gonna get  into trouble for this but i don't think we are  

particularly good at sport isn't that strange  cricket i suppose people would say mr duncan  

wait there you silly sausage what about cricket  you have a very good cricket team well sometimes  

but i even with my small amount of knowledge  we're good at rowing even my small amount of  

knowledge of cricket i know that sometimes we  do disastrously i mean we won quite a lot of  

gold anyway anyway i'm distracting away from  what you want to talk about today mr duncan  

which is well first of all we mentioned  timekeeping a few moments ago being late  

oh later or early or on time now now i think i  think you are someone who quite often is late  

or no or in a hurry i'm i'm always in a hurry  to get somewhere i seem to be i always seem to  

you know if i've got to travel somewhere i would  say right it's going to take me an hour to travel  

there and then i forget that you know it takes me  so an hour before i normally get into the car or  

think about it an hour beforehand but of course  you've got to get into the car you've got to get  

ready you've got to put your thing in your  sat nav your destination and by the time  

you've done all that and that's of course saying  goodbye to mr duncan that takes about 10 minutes  

suddenly 15 minutes is gone and  you're late i tell you what steve does  

that this is a little insight now into our lives  steve will say to me i'm going now i'm going now  

so that tells me that mr steve is going now so  what i do i go to i go to see steve off i i wave  

but when i get to the car he he hasn't finished  getting ready no i've forgotten to get the water  

bottle filled up because i like to have water  with me um then i've then i get into the car  

i'm ready to go and i've forgotten something like  my phone yeah so i have to go back into the house  

to get that but the the other thing steve always  does he has to put things on his skin for example  

uh he has to put moisturizer i like a little bit  of moisturizer yes he has to have a little bit of  

grip the steering wheel he has to have some  lubrication on his hands what dry hand you see so  

uh we found that yes if you like driving a little  bit of moisturizer just helps you grip the wheel  

i like it anyway but don't you end up with  a greasy steering wheel no oh no not not the  

moisturizer i use mr duncan you're always late  for the live streams on a sunday aren't you  

sometimes maybe a minute maybe two minutes  sometimes ten but that is understandable  

because i am dealing with technology and you know  what technology is like i know i mean i've got i  

used to have a boss uh who was obsessed with not  arriving late to such an extent that she would  

arrive an hour early to meetings just to  make sure she absolutely had a pathological  

aversion to being late so when you say you've  got a pathological aversion to something  

we're not talking about disease it means you are  really really against that particular thing or  

you've got a problem with it if it happens  actually pathological it means deep seated  

so something that is ingrained it is such a part  of you you can't you can't avoid it or escape it  

no exactly so she would always tell me she was  never late and it would cause a great deal of  

distress if she ever thought she was going to  be late so sometimes she's like hour hour and  

a half early to meetings whereas other people  just sort of breeze up two minutes beforehand  

a bit like me really she's always just arriving  time as i said never really as i said earlier  

i don't like being on time for parties because  when you arrive on time there is no one there  

and you have to sit around like a  like an idiot so it's always nice to  

arrive a little bit later where when some of  the people some of the guests have arrived  

and do i like to arrive early  i can leave early and go to bed  

well but but if there's no one there they don't  know you've arrived if everybody does that then  

there'd be nobody at the party to really late well  yeah that's it they'd all just arrive late anyway  

anyway steve a few weeks ago steve was  clicking on the internet uh as he often does  

and he found something while i was searching  wait wait steve let me just build up first before  

before you give your side steve was  on the internet and he was searching  

i don't know what he was searching for but  he always seems to clear his browsing history  

so i don't know what he's looking for on the  internet but his browsing history is always  

deleted there's not very many things i search  for on the internet so it's very easy to predict  

uh what it would be yes initials s b well that's  that's okay but that's not really what we're  

saying again let me just build up i'm building  up you see faster and steve found something that  

he's now become completely obsessed with a tv  show that was broadcast in the early 1970s 1971  

1971 the early 70s as i said and well it was  1971 to be precise yes and that's the early  

70s well it's not the early 70s it's 1971. yes so  what isn't the early 70s i'm just being facetious  

facetious actually no you're being pedantic you're  actually being obtuse could be said for things

anyway back to what i'm  actually trying to talk about  

steve came across a video of a tv show  that was broadcast in germany way back in  

1971 the early 70s and well i suppose i will leave  it to you to explain i'm going to put some images  

up on the screen steve loves this particular video  yes i don't know what i think it's nostalgia i  

am not keen i think you're i think you're  beginning to uh see its benefits mr duncan i think  

you're beginning to get drawn in to the nostalgia  of this television program so steve likes it  

from its entertainment value musical value i  don't like it because of the technical side  

it's 1971 okay steve we're going to have this  talk in a moment i'm just this is introduction

i think we should be faster because people  are going to get bored no i don't think so  

no you have to make things clearly clear  when you're talking about something here  

we go so the thing in question is a very odd video  entitled tv wonderland wonderland yes because it's  

german okay do we have anyone from germany  watching or countries nearby if so and your  

similar age to us you may well remember this  program and the reason that i have discovered it  

is because i like to watch anything with shirley  bassey in it yes and she appeared on this program  

in 1971 along with many other guests a  german television program tv wonderland  

and um well i've i watched shirley bassey but  then i became fascinated with all the other  

stars that were appearing on this show and  it's not just a few minutes it's a very long  

show it's about an hour yes and uh many stars of  which obviously were famous in germany and nearby  

countries but we hadn't heard of in the uk and  i just have discovered these wonderful artistes  

um from the 1970s so have we got anybody from  germany watching who might does anyone remember tv  

of underland which was made in germany it's  on youtube and just to help you by the way  

if you feel as if you want to watch it there is a  link under this live stream the link is under here  

to to this it's wonderful so mr steve loves this  but i don't like it very much because of the  

the technical side i'm going to give  you a clue okay steve it's not a debate

well you can't say you don't like it because  of the technical side when it was i mean it  

was probably the height of technical prowess  in 1971 i haven't i haven't showed anything yet  

that we can debate it when when i've shown  something anyway i think we should move on here we  

go steve look at this now this gives you an idea  of the sort of production values that's wonderful  

if it's 1971 mr duncan you can't judge it  by today's standards no i'm 19 i'm 71. again

it doesn't matter about the age or the year  i'm on about the actual what it is it's it's  

women dancing around on a stage with with giant  televisions you're showing it out of context  

you're not showing it with the music you're not  showing it trust me trust me what you're seeing  

here is much better than the actual show itself  it's it's excellent if you want a bit of nostalgia  

and you were you know if you remember  is anyone from germany watching  

yeah because they may have heard he's  asking well the reason i'm asking is that  

you know well i'm going to mention some of the  people that were in it has anyone actually said  

they're in germany yet i don't know not yet well  that's why we have the live chat oh this is fun  

isn't it this has turned out to be a lovely spot  mr duncan here's another one look at this now  

it's really there's some very interesting  effects with the video you see so  

what what i'm actually criticizing more is the  technical side of it you can't criticize it it's  

1971 where you can criticize anything but there  are people that still criticize citizen kane  

and it's one of the greatest films ever yet yeah  there's people yeah well you mentioned some of the  

the people's names that were in it and then people  might recognize some of the stars that were around  

yes in 1971 in germany at the time big stars give  people an idea really big stars including this guy  

carol got now i'd never heard of him uh he was  quite a star uh has anybody else heard of him he's  

dead by the way everyone in this video everyone  on this tv show is dead apart from shirley bassey  

that's the sad part about it it's so sad  when you watch old films or old tv shows  

and you discover how wonderful somebody is  in it and then you discover they're dead  

i just i find that very sad well i was watching  laurel and hardy the other day an old movie  

of theirs and i was surprised to find out that  they're both dead now it's a bit sad really hmm  

yes there we go so we've got other people in  there so we've got so well we've got this guy  

still to talk about so what what what's he famous  for he's a singer he's a singer he's a sort of  

operatic style singer uh and i don't know much  about him mr duncan are we going to spend lots of  

i just wanted to know had anybody else heard  of him because we haven't in the uk because he  

wasn't a star here but he was a a massive star  in uh germany i think he won loads and loads of  

prizes and things like that you give me all this  information about him the other day yes i'm just  

saying that he'd appeared in eurovision no  not eurovision no okay not as far as i know  

so he was he was he was a big singer ah there  we go edit says very well known in hungary yes  

which is what i said earlier to steve when  he was talking about this away from the live  

stream i said you will find that there will be  lots of people across europe who have heard of  

carol gott that's right uh very well known  so zebra who where are you from uh z-d-e-n-e  

s-e-b-a whereabouts are you from you say he's your  big star but where that looks like maybe russia or  

that that side czech republic there we go that's  it maggie p yes so that's it it's not from germany  

no he was he was quite well known though in  germany uh but he was from the czech republic  

which is uh what maggie says there and and i think  he won like every like for sort of 30 years in a  

row he sort of won all these singing all these  prizes uh not prizes you know sort of tv awards  

things like that but we've never heard of him in  the uk so if we had an equivalent what who would  

he be tom jones i would say probably yes would  be our equivalent i'm not a fan of tom jones  

yes yeah that's it so there we go biggest star in  lots of countries and so i've discovered him as a  

result of this tv program as i have rediscovered  uh wonderful orchestras and bands from the time  

james last yes we'll be looking at that orchestra  max greger right there steve you're jumping ahead  

well i don't think we're going to spend  this long on it no it's fine okay steve

well shirley bassey obviously shirley bassey so  shirley bassey makes an appearance on here as  

well although the thing that made me laugh is  at the start when they're showing photographs  

of the people who are appearing they use the worst  

they use the worst photograph that  i've ever seen of shirley bassey

they do yeah they do so so she what is she singing  oh something i can't remember what she's singing  

i think it's something but i mean i i initially  watched it because i'm a fan of shirley bassey  

but then i've discovered all these other stars  and in particular the thing i'm most drawn to  

these amazing uh sort of big band orchestra  sounds that we had from sort of james last i  

mean he was well known in this country he was  all over the world but he was from germany uh  

but he travelled all over the world and became  famous all over the world and did concerts and  

oh it's just it just cheers you up it just cheers  you but mr duncan the whole program cheers me up  

as well as makes me sad because most of the people  in it are dead yes as you've said it really yes we  

we are we can now definitely confirm that everyone  almost everyone in tv vondeland is dead including  

this guy so this guy appears i'm not a big fan  of clowns do they frighten you mr duncan i don't  

like clowns i don't know why charlie revell is  his name or was his name apparently this guy  

was was the most famous clown in the world yes  charlie revell he he was actually very good  

friends with charlie chaplin and and apparently  they used to meet up and discuss their work quite  

often and and charlie chaplin is well known for  quoting whilst talking to charlie revell i don't  

know which one imitates who so so does charlie  chaplin imitate him or does he imitate charlie  

chaplin and this is a quote from charlie chaplin  so i get the feeling that charlie chaplin actually  

admired this guy quite a lot but i don't  like clowns i will be honest with you i'm  

not a fan of clowns so i mean this program's  got everything in it's got dancers it's got  

singers it's even got ballet as well and there's a  couple of belly dancers in there uh hydran swatch  

and klaus beelitz who uh i mean you wouldn't  expect to see that in a tv program you'd never  

see it now but they're dancing to this  wonderful music that is being played by  

um james last yes is this a wonderful sort of it's  on the screen now uh so that is james last year  

that is the set it gives you an idea of the feel  and the atmosphere of this show but if you want to  

click the link underneath later you can and watch  the whole thing now the thing about james last

is he doesn't really do anything when he's  when he's performing with his orchestra he  

just stands there he doesn't do anything well you  see that's the mark of a fabulous band leader or  

a conductor that they have their orchestra  so well trained that in fact they don't have  

to do very much the more a conductor has to do uh  it's often said or quite often said that the more  

a conductor's waving his arms around and pointing  at people it's probably because the players need a  

lot of help so they don't in this particular band  because obviously they know what they're doing  

he starts them off uh but there's somebody else  i hadn't heard of max greger was also has anybody  

heard of max greger what did he do well he's  got another band very similar oh uh i think  

we didn't have him in the uk but we definitely had  james last yes james last chance i always think  

james last looks like a serial killer he looks  like someone who might invite people home and then  

eat them i don't know why has any uh anybody heard  of johnny tupen a harp player johnny tupen he was  

quite famous but not again in the uk and he plays  this harp with all sort of electronic effects  

it's quite amazing it's it's a very um to us it  seems like quite an eccentric show but i love it  

um it's definitely eccentric so here's another  another picture charlie used to howl that's  

right he did anarchy he used to sort of howl  and he does in this as well uh oh yes i forgot  

to mention that they had this particular person  famous singer by satellite link andy williams  

but the hilarious thing about this is they they  try to do a satellite link but unfortunately  

the sound is so poor it sounds like he's he's  singing down a phone line in 1971 so it's just  

and in there you can just about hear andy williams  singing so it's it's not very good and also i'm  

not a big fan of andy williams we don't care no  well i do because it's my opinion but the weirdest  

now she wants to see the thing that tells me that  this is the weirdest thing i've ever seen must be  

this thing and can i just can i just warn you you  are about to see something that is so disturbing  

you won't sleep tonight what the bloody hell is  that well that was the closing credits they just  

had a sort of a puppet it's a puppet mr duncan but  what is it i don't know what is it supposed to be  

it just does funny things at the end it was scary  it scared me i found myself slightly traumatized  

by by the whole show to be honest just watch it i  think you'll be i i was just taken in instantly as  

i started watching it yeah it's just i think it's  nostalgia it's remembering just how good tv used  

to be how much talent there was around everyone's  saying what the hell is that i don't know what it  

is but it makes it makes a few appearances  especially at the end and it's really creepy  

and that now i can't stop having nightmares  about it i wake up and it's attacking me  

well if you want a bit of a bit of if you want to  cheer yourself up watch it yeah so there it is tv  

of wonderland with lots of great guests some of  the worst blue screen effects that you've ever  

seen uh but but it's it's it's of its time would  you say yes that's it it was probably absolutely  

awesome at the time um to see all these special  effects but obviously by today's standards it's  

like when you watch a film from the 1970s or  1980s the effects yes uh do not that's it i  

have not do not have not worn very well star  wars it's terrible now when i watch star wars  

i say oh look at that isn't it crappy it was  made in the mid 70s it's so awful that's star  

wars film if you've seen it all of those terrible  special effects it's awful it's a terrible movie

mr steve what are we doing today mr duncan  that might help people with their english  

well we were going to have flags of the  world but i don't want a repeat of last week  

okay if you mean a vote oh we're not doing that  again and then mr steve tried to you tried to read  

out all of the names and it became very chaotic  to be honest i thought it was very good yes  

actually a lot of people did a lot  of people said how wonderful it was  

but we're not doing it again because i don't think  people deserve it really to be honest with you

we have some messages coming through anything else  to mention mr steve nothing in particular at the  

moment oh we had pedro on earlier you didn't  even see that you didn't even see yeah you  

didn't even say hello to pedro well i don't know  if pedro is still on pedro say hello to everyone  

pedro asked because yesterday of course was the  20th anniversary of the september 11th attacks  

in new york and pedro asked what were we doing  what were we doing do we remember what happened  

now i remember clearly because i had just arrived  back in the uk after flying from malaysia the day  

before so i was actually on an airplane on the  10th of september 2001. so i arrived back in the  

uk on the 10th of september and of course the  next day we had the attacks on the world trade  

center but i was actually back at work on that day  i just returned to work and one of my friends from  

malaysia sent me a text message on my phone and  said united states of america is under attack  

and i thought wow that sounds serious so i went  outside and i was working in the town and i went  

to a shop that had some televisions in the window  so you were flying back you'd flown back to china  

no china no not china i wasn't in china oh  right okay no malaysia oh right okay okay  

i'd flown back the day before okay i've my store  has completely gone there um yes i looked in a  

window of a place selling televisions and all  of the televisions were showing the same image  

the twin towers and a plane crashing into  it and i just stood there i i don't know how  

long i was there for but i just stood there  completely shocked and i just stayed there  

for maybe 30 or 40 minutes just  watching what was happening  

and so so that's what i was doing what about you  steve i was working from home at the time and  

then of course ended up spending most of the  day watching the television as did everybody  

uh i've got a friend uh whose birthday is  was on is on the 11th of september uh so  

well put it this way she wasn't celebrating  her birthday uh and in fact i think the day  

afterwards or two days later um i went off on  a on a conference with work a sales conference  

so um we all met i'm sure it was two days  later uh and we had to fly off somewhere  

so it was all a bit strange uh but of course  a lot of people don't remember it because they  

weren't even born that time it's 20 years ago now  i find that fascinating so that i suppose that's  

the same sort of thing that when we were growing  up our parents were talking about the war  

and they'd say oh the war the war i was  growing up during the second world war  

and we always thought that sounded strange  because we never saw it we never experienced it  

so there are people now who are maybe 16 or 17  years old who who were not even born when 9 11  

happened so to them it's just a historic moment  that they never experienced so i always find  

those things quite fascinating well dale a lot  of people are making comments adele said that uh

her son uh was in new york on that day  so you must have been extremely worried  

um wondering if your son was okay uh so yes that  must have been a william heart moment willian says  

i was 13 years old and i went out of school to  oh i was reading off your screen i went out of  

school to run home to watch dragon ball z or  dragon ball z which is an animated cartoon yes  

yes adele says she was living in buenos aires  and her son was in new york so yes that must  

have been very scary moment for you at the time  like it would have been for a lot of people yeah  

oh leena is here hello lena i haven't seen you for  a long time or or maybe you have been here and i  

haven't noticed but lena welcome i haven't  it seems like a long time since we saw you  

here thank you for joining us today isn't lena  going no i don't know but i just saw the name

christina oh hello crostina oh it would appear  that some people have not forgotten about what  

i said last week about getting healthy yes i  am still following my new regime aren't i steve  

he's been very good he's been very good we  haven't had a piece of chocolate all week  

one or two biscuits but no no nachos uh cutting  down on everything with high fat and sugar and  

apart from tea and coffee yes still having  you know everyone's average daily intake of  

sugar in one cup of tea as mr duncan does well  this is this is the encouragement that i need  

you see from mr steve if anyone is going to  you've cut down you've cut down thanks steve  

i have cut down a lot and not only that i am  exercising a lot more i i'm walking every day  

i'm doing around on average around 7 000 steps  every day so so yes and we we now walk into town  

on saturday again we used to drive in certainly  during lockdown that's what we did but now we are  

we are walking yes so yes for those wondering yes  i am still on my diet i am still exercising much  

more than i normally would and i'm hoping over  the next couple of months to lose a bit of weight  

from around my tummy ori mori makes a good point  that after 9 11 millions were killed in iraq  

afghanistan and syria but we don't remember them  that is very true yes um but that that as they say  

is a whole another story but yes  the point made and it's a good point  

um marwa once wants their name mohamed  marwa what's their name said with an echo  

oh i see okay i will try my best you know we like  to please who is it again mohammed marwa marwa

my throat is very dry almost painful and i think  i know why i think it might be steve's fault  

because yesterday he was painting some some  strange solution onto the roof to fill the cracks  

and it's very strong it has a terrible  smell and i think it's gone onto my throat  

and affected my my voice this this is my  twinkle this is my livelihood for goodness sake

without any more fantasizing or daydreaming let's  get on with today's full english lesson right

now

here's an interesting word that relates to a  common form of human behaviour the word is passive  

aggressive a passive aggressive person is  someone who uses non-direct resistance as  

a form of protest or as a means of reacting to  something a common form of this behaviour is the  

action of pretending to misunderstand or feign  confusion you avoid confrontation by acting dumb  

non-direct confrontation can take the form  of silence avoiding contact or refusing to  

speak to someone can be described as passive  aggressive behaviour it is common for those in  

long-term relationships to develop patterns of  passive aggressive behaviour the word passive  

is often used to show a submissive state whereas  aggression is often seen as being the opposite  

some see this word as an oxymoron two words that  are used together but have opposite meanings is an  

oxymoron passive aggressive behaviour is generally  seen as a normal part of human interaction  

however it can sometimes be linked to certain  personality disorders to avoid responsibility  

or conflict in a non-compliant way can be  described as passive aggressive behaviour

it's now time to take a look at another  buzzword a buzz word is a word or phrase  

that is used often during a certain  period of time today's buzz word is

tariff the word tariff can be used as a noun  or verb as a noun the word tariff is a form  

of taxation or charge which is added to the  sale of goods imported from overseas if china  

wants to sell their goods to the usa then they  will have to pay tariffs on what they export  

the amount of each tariff depends on  what types of goods are being sold  

high-end or expensive items tend to have a very  high tariff attached to them luxury items such as  

cars and valuable commodities sold overseas  such as oil and steel often carry heavy tariffs  

the charge is added as a way of collecting the  lost revenue which would otherwise be generated  

domestically as a verb tariff is the action of  putting the charge in place a tariff can also be  

described as a levy tax toll duty excise it is a  form of export tax the country exporting the goods  

pays a tariff to the country that is importing  them to charge a tariff is to impose a fee  

the tariffs are put in place they  are required they have been enforced

you plant a flower you plant a tree  you can plant a kiss on another person  

to place something where it can easily be found is  to plant the evidence was planted in his apartment  

by the police as a noun the word plant can  refer to a large factory a person who goes  

undercover to pose as another person is a plant a  certain species of flower or other green foliage  

can be described as a plant you can plant a plant  grow a plant nourish a plant or like now you can

enjoy a plant

i am sure that a lot of people will be missing  the sentence game it will be back next week  

but no sentence game today some people might  be happy about it and some people might  

not be happy about it you can't please  everyone mr steve that's what they say  

that is true if you try to please  everyone you end up pleasing no one  

no one will like what you do we watched a  great documentary i mentioned it earlier  

maria kalas the most amazing voice ever  certainly from from a female point of view anyway  

an absolutely amazing documentary it must have  been good because we we didn't go to bed until  

nearly 25 to one in the morning so it was  brilliant it was in fact i had forgotten  

how good she was there was they were showing  one one piece where she was singing and it it  

brought tears to my eyes it was amazing this is  the tragedy when when people with such talent die  

after so many years they've just forgotten about  i mean you don't really hear anybody talking about  

pavarotti anymore uh very much and in fact the  thing is these mega stars these incredibly i don't  

want to use the word stars they're they're people  with talent that's beyond the ordinary way beyond  

mere mortals it's almost like a superpower it's  a superpower i mean lots of there are lots of  

sopranos singers there are lots of tenors and  famous singers talented singers everywhere i'm  

sure but to get into that to get that level  of talent i mean watching her sing last night  

i mean these were recordings from the 1970s  i mean that is a talent beyond that is sort  

of once in 50 or once in a hundred years  somebody comes along with talent like that um  

i mean for all i know because we don't really see  opera singers on the television very much anymore  

because it's not popular to watch there may be  people with amazing talent out there in fact if  

if you were to watch the proms which  we haven't watched this year which is  

celebration of classical music that happens every  year in the uk there probably were incredibly  

talented singers on there but um but i think i  think you you would describe someone like that  

as an icon it was the personality along with the  voice that's the two things that is the magic  

i think yes she was a leader anyway that she had  a certain allure and of course her private life  

was always under scrutiny constantly  she was chased by the press all the  

time probably one of the most pursued people  of certainly the late 1960s early 1970s but  

her life tragically cut short in 1977 very  sad and only 53 something like that yes  

only 53 when she died very sad but but the most  amazing voice almost unreal it's hard to imagine  

or to believe when you're watching her perform  that this sound is actually coming from her it  

it it's it's almost unreal and those notes that  it's incredible as i said i had tears in my eyes  

just from the sound of a person singing it  was amazing absolutely incredible so that's  

that's two things from the 1970s one was that tv  show we were talking about tv wonderland and now  

a wonderful singer from the 70s she was she was  really around in the in the early to late 60s and  

then disappeared for a while so she did actually  slowly retreat from public life after having  

a couple of nervous breakdowns one in which  happened during a performance so we actually  

saw that didn't we we actually saw the the clip  there was a a short film clip of her actually sort  

of just saying no that's it and they had to make  an announcement saying that maria callas will not  

be continuing the performance which is incredible  if if you are talented to that degree that level  

of talent always comes with a many downsides  in terms of your psychological makeup i think  

um because if you haven't got those flaws those  issues with your personality you're you'd never  

be a brilliant performer like that i don't  think there are many performers that don't have  

you know deep psychological issues because  just that nature of performing i think it just  

they just go hand in hand yes yes it is strange  how how people who have a a measurable talent  

also seem to have a lot of tragedy i suppose you  could think of people like me well well you're  

still alive so but the tragedy i wouldn't have  had in my life mr duncan not as tragic as mine  

so you have people like i suppose kurt cobain is  a good example often talked about and many other  

people who who had very short lives even though  they did a lot and had amazing talent buddy holly  

is a very good example only only in his twenties  when he died and he is he was he was huge at  

the time but never got the chance to actually  go ahead with his with his career everyone's  

talking about sergio and his vodka at the moment  oh okay why i don't know presumably because uh  

people just associate sergio with vodka now um  they always ask have you got any vodka sergio  

uh but yes right hmm she was greek  yes she was palmura that's right  

uh yeah lots of films michael jackson  there's another one although i think  

i think it's fair to say i know i know people  are going to disagree i think michael jackson had  

burnt out by then that's what i  mean that's what we're saying yes  

amazing talent yes and you know they have  issues because of that talent that's it so

don't blimey they're putting plums  or peaches in in sergio's vodka

john lennon yes that's right adele but  again john lennon i suppose he had already  

done most of what he was going to do so i wouldn't  although the circumstances of his death were  

pretty shocking at the time i remember how  everyone was so shocked when it happened  

but i suppose it's fair to say that he had some  sort of career fame and fortune before the uh  

unfortunate event occurred i suppose we are  talking about fighting and we aren't we are a mood  

for a fight yes i can tell you you've got a bit  of a you've got a bit of a grump i've got a bit of  

a cob on a car steve's a bit grumpy today you may  have noticed he was very impatient with me earlier

we're talking about fighting and there  are there are many ways of expressing  

fighting or the word fight in fact you  might be surprised how many ways there are  

of using the word or other words that  can be used as well so we have fight  

words and phrases fight words and phrases so  by that we mean the word fight generally gen  

generally in the english language i don't know  what's happening to my voice my my voice is just  

becoming harder and harder to actually use very  strange it's like my throat carry on mr duncan my  

throat is closing up it's his fault the word fight  can be used as a noun and a verb so you can see  

a fight occurring or you can actually fight  someone as a noun it is the thing that is  

occurring and as a verb it is the action  of actually doing it so it can be used as  

both of those things the past tense  of fight is fought they fought  

courageously in the war so you you fight as the  present tense and in the past tense it is thought

the word fight means conflict or clash so  when we talk about fight in general we are  

talking about some sort of conflict maybe  a disagreement agreement maybe some sort of  

situation where things get out of hand  adele had a fight with bees yesterday  

because um she's got a nest in her  house how frightening was that but yes  

um i mean strictly speaking you probably can't  you can't really say that you fight bees can you  

no it has to be sort of some mutual so a  fight is normally where both people are  

actively doing it so if you are fighting bees you  might fight them off yes which is a great phrasal  

verb so fight off means you are trying to push  something away using force so maybe you are being  

attacked by bees so you fight off the bees maybe  that's what adele meant you're fighting them off  

getting them away from you yeah so if they were in  the house then maybe that's what adele was doing  

a fight can be physical or allegorical which is  interesting so a fight can be something that is  

really happening two people are punching and  beating and or shouting or you can use it as  

the way of describing a struggle of some sort so  your fight can be used as i suppose a thing that  

you are trying to overcome maybe you are fighting  depression you are fighting a certain feeling  

to fight something maybe you are fighting  something that is happening around you so it's not  

you're not physically fighting something off no  you're resisting something uh you might fight uh  

global warming uh addiction for example you might  be addicted to a drug and you're you're trying to  

fight that addiction but you're not literally you  know addiction isn't there and you're punching it  

yes so that's the yeah so yeah you can be as  you say using it metaphorically a disagreement  

might lead to a fight so two people might be  having a conversation it might be a lovely  

conversation and everything is going perfectly  all right but then they disagree with each other  

maybe one person thinks one thing and perhaps  the other person thinks the opposite they have an  

opposite point of view you might just talk about  it in a nice way but you might suddenly disagree  

or you might get into a heated argument so when  we talk about something that is heated it means  

maybe it is aggressive or it might be leading to  something more serious so a heated argument or  

a heated disagreement might lead to a fight see  there we go palmyra says i'm fighting insomnia  

yes yeah that's it you're um you're trying to  overcome it you yes if you're not using fighting  

to mean literally fighting as in punches then um  like fighting addiction you're fighting insomnia  

so you have a problem sleeping and you're  trying to deal with it you're struggling with it  

i mean fight and we'll probably come on to  synonyms won't we so to struggle against  

something oh you've got yeah okay to struggle  against something is a fight yeah who was fighting  

against it i suppose you might say that it is  used figuratively so it's not an actual action  

you are not actually fighting physically but you  are doing it as a struggle yes so in palmyra's  

example she says she's fighting insomnia you could  also you say you're struggling with insomnia but  

although that's two slightly different things  because if you're fighting insomnia it means  

you're trying to do something to overcome that  whereas if you're struggling with it you're just  

in that moment of struggling with it of of  not being coping with it very well maybe  

whereas then when you you could say you're  struggling i'm struggling with insomnia or  

i'm struggling with drug addiction but then  you move on to the next stage which now i'm  

going to fight it which means that that's when  you're putting things in place to actually try  

and overcome that yes so struggle can be maybe  a difficult situation that you're going through  

here's a good one from s ketchum cancer patients  fight cancer yes yes that's it they fight it by  

either sort of going to the doctor having  an operation maybe having chemotherapy  

but also mentally as well putting themselves in  a position whereby they can overcome the disease  

what's interesting about that is you are actually  doing things physically as well so you might be  

taking some sort of treatment so that is actually  interesting that that fight if you are fighting a  

serious illness quite often that fight might be  two different types so it can be figurative and  

actual because you might be taking medication  or some sort of treatment to to battle max pose  

says i'm struggling to go back to work tomorrow  oh max po monday morning yes a lot of people  

a lot of people are now adjusting to  the what i i like to call the old normal  

do you remember the new normal the new normal  is what was happening during lockdown but but  

but many people now are having  to go back to the old normal  

which is how things were before and and  some people don't want to go back to work  

you could use struggling and fight  in in the same sentence for example  

if you are having problems with weight gain  you could say i'm struggling with my weight  

the implication being you're putting  on weight you're having trouble  

uh controlling it keeping it to the level that  you want so you could say i'm struggling with my  

weight but i i'm fighting it so in other  words you are then doing things like  

going for it like mr duncan is trying to  do exercise eat less fatty and sugary foods  

yeah so i'm now in my first week i'm  coming towards the end of my first week of  

fighting my my weight problem where i've  been putting a bit too much weight on  

eating too much food here's another good  one from louis uh you can fight shyness yes  

you're saying you know if you are a shy person  then uh you want to overcome that so you fight it  

you know i'm fighting it so you push yourself into  situations which will eventually help you overcome  

it because you will do things and you'll realize  you'll gain confidence as you do those things  

like speaking english you know you might be  fighting the shyness of speaking in public  

speaking english in public yes whereas if you do  it and keep doing it you'll get more confidence  

and then you will overcome that shyness hello  adi addie is currently fighting hypochondria  

a.d uh by the way is back from was it  california he went to it was he's back  

they went to california yes there we go  fighting hypochondria that's it's a hypochondria  

uh something i suffer from what suffers the  wrong word something i have a tendency to do  

attendance that's sort of ironic if you suffer  from hypochondria because that is itself that's  

yes the whole point of hypochondria is it's  not real so it's weird that it's a paradox  

hypochondria obviously somebody who uh thinks  there's something wrong with them yeah all the  

time yeah which i i'm a bit like that i have a  tendency towards hypochondria uh obsessing with  

my health thinking that there must be something  wrong yes uh and a lot of people suffered from  

this during lockdown even though they weren't ill  because they were having more time with themselves  

you know every ache and pain you know and it  becomes a symptom of something which could  

be a disease that is all imagined we were told  every day by the tv the tv and politicians were  

telling us every day that we might become really  sick and and ill so i i i would not blame anyone  

for for being a hypochondriac during that period  to be honest i've got a friend i i've got a friend  

who's also a hypochondriac and we're both always  sharing our experiences of you know what's the  

latest illness that you think you've got and  uh have you been for any tests uh to confirm to  

confirm that you haven't got it i think i've had  more blood tests than anybody else in the whole  

of this area we live in it's good to see that  the national health service money is being used  

and not wasted so ban says i'm struggling with  stress yes but you know work home life whatever it  

is uh and and people struggle with it uh but you  know you can try and fight that can't you as well  

you know would be using that in a sentence  more examples the action of pushing against  

subjugation and oppression is  fight so to push against something  

that is pushing against you maybe from a point  of view of certain laws that are brought in or  

maybe something that is done by a government  or a regime so the action of pushing against  

you might use the word rebel i think that's a good  one so you might say rebellion is a type of fight  

because you are pushing against something that  is pushing against you oppression or maybe  

subjugation so it is something that is  forcing itself onto you and you have to  

fight back you push back in return  to push against is to fight back

hot that topic is oh my goodness it makes brexit  look like a tea party to be honest it really does  

yes oh dear yes there is a lot going on at the  moment across this country and around this nation  

people are not happy you might say that they  are fighting to push against is to fight back  

so you might fight back if a person is  attacking you if someone comes up to you  

and starts attacking you you might have to  fight back yes you have to physically find  

it back literally we would say fight back that's  it or the word is retaliate i like that word yeah  

if you retaliate it means you are returning the  same punishment in return you are retaliating  

fighting back yes you are fighting synonyms but  you can you can fight back figuratively as well  

can't you i mean you can if somebody's attacking  you verbally um calling you names things like that  

and you might not say anything for a while and  then you or somebody writes a nasty email to you  

or somebody says something nasty to us in the  live stream we might we might fight back and  

uh and and make a comment about them  or if somebody criticizes you at work  

says that your work is is not good enough and  always criticizing you and oh you're late in today  

um you're one minute late uh your work's awful  um etc etc and then you might start fighting back  

and saying well no i was early yesterday i  was five minutes early yesterday and you know  

i've got promoted the other week because of my  good work and i got this so yeah you fight back  

although if you are in the wrong that is if you  are actually doing something wrong or you are  

in the wrong then fighting back might be futile  because you are still in the wrong so that's quite  

interesting the way we can define that a physical  conflict involving direct contact is a fight  

that's what we think of when we think of fight  so most people will think of fighting or fight is  

when two people are actually harming each other  physically normally by striking or hitting or  

doing something physically so a physical conflict  involving direct contact is fight of course the  

fight might not be serious there might be not  not much harm done there might be no injuries  

and then a fight can can be the opposite it can  be lethal to argue vocally oh i like this one  

so a fight isn't necessarily physical it can  also be vocal so two people who are fighting  

verbally to argue vocally or verbally can be  described as a fight or quarrel quarrel i like  

that word by the way you might hear two people  quarrelling it means they are they are shouting or  

they are abusing each other verbally  they are having a quarrel for example  

the couple next door were fighting again we  could hear them quarrelling through the wall  

do you ever do that do you ever listen to your  neighbours when they're fighting when they're  

having a row or an argument and you go to the  wall and maybe you you take a glass and you put  

the glass against the wall and then you listen to  what is going on you listen to the argument taking  

place next door that's what jimmy said sometimes  verbal exchanges can be perceived as fights  

uh yes so they're not actually physically fighting  so the couple next door were fighting again but  

not probably we don't mean that they're physically  fighting in fact in a situation like that if  

somebody if you were to say oh uh the neighbours  were noisy they were they were fighting again you  

might ask the question well do you mean they were  actually fighting you know physically fighting and  

then your reply might be oh no they would they  would just they'd be just having a row a quarrel  

but in that instance that would mean a fighting  means that they're just shouting at each other  

doesn't mean they're actually fighting having a  physical fight here's an interesting thing steve  

sometimes in cultures if there is a cultural  difference so if if you are somewhere maybe  

you are in a foreign land a foreign country and  you and there are people around you and they  

they appear to be shouting and fighting but in  fact they're not so you can have instances where  

if you are with a group of people who  speak a different language you might assume  

that they are actually fighting or arguing  because you can't understand what they're saying  

so their voices are raised they are shouting  but you don't really know what they're saying i  

suppose a good example is is the italian culture  so italians quite often can be very passionate  

when they're talking to each other but if  you don't understand what they're saying  

you might assume that they are rowing or having  an argument we might yes okay that's what i mean  

well anyone who doesn't speak italian and  the same thing happens in china by the way  

chinese people do the same thing so that they  might start speaking very loudly to each other  

and it almost sounds like they're raring or  arguing but they're not so i was caught out  

by that quite often when i was in china when i  thought people were about to have a fight but  

it turned out that they they weren't fighting  at all they were just speaking in a certain way  

so would you say there was a difference between  conflict and fight and in terms of words are  

they synonyms they they are just well i suppose a  conflict can be two things that do not go together  

so from that respect it would be slightly  different but generally speaking when we talk  

about war maybe a battle we often talk about  conflict so two things that do not go together  

two things that do not match so fight is is more  the action conflict can be just two things that  

disagree with each other so without fighting it  all so a conflict can be two things that don't  

go together they they they are opposites they  will not go together you can have a conflict of  

interests can't you where two people enjoy  different things when that creates problems  

for example we could be sitting down to watch  television and i want to watch one program

you know i want to watch tv wonderland and mr  duncan wants to watch star wars yeah obviously  

the uh the most recent version uh and uh you could  say that there was a conflict we start a conflict  

there's a conflict of interest i want to watch  one program mr duncan wants to watch another one  

we have a conflict and we have to try and resolve  that without fighting of course that never happens  

because i have control of the remote the remote  control is always in my hand so i i always my  

control yes there's always one person there's  nothing more annoying is there if you are if you  

live with somebody and they get hold of the remote  control and they're flicking through the channels  

um that can start a fight or a conflict uh in  the home uh because there's nothing more annoying  

watching people flicking through channels  he does it all the time well that's because  

there's nothing on most television nowadays is  just rubbish that's why it's very hard to find  

something good to watch so israel ahmed israel  fight and conflict can be used as synonyms but  

they also do have their own separate meanings  yes yes they're not exactly exactly connected  

one might fight against authority or injustice  apparently in argentina there is an election  

taking place right they're trying they're trying  to kick out the government in argentina today  

i i did see something about it last week on the  news because things are not very good there at  

the moment politically and well in many ways  in fact which i won't go into at the moment but  

inflation for example is very high there now so  people are not happy and they are trying to change  

the government oh so i think i might mention  now steve i saw a very interesting thing on  

television last night were you flicking through  the channel i was flicking and i found a very  

interesting report apparently el salvador is now  going to bring in or they've started to bring in  

bitcoin as their normal currency i'm amazed  you've mentioned that mr duncan well i was  

amazed at the report because it's incredible so in  el salvador they've actually started using bitcoin  

you can go to a atm and you can put your card in  and you can get you can transfer your bitcoins  

into cash which i find amazing so i thought that  first country of the world i think i think there's  

other south american countries thinking of  doing the same thing i think the driving  

force behind it so i understand is that uh  so that they're not tied to the us dollar yes  

so they've got some independence going on there  but uh i thought it was interesting that i thought  

how unusual it is and somebody there was a picture  of somebody who bought their first cup of coffee  

uh by presumably trading some bitcoin somehow  um but interestingly enough the price of it  

on the very same day that um el salvador it came  became legal currency if that's that i don't know  

if i'm using the right terms there uh the price  of uh bitcoin dropped by about 15 or something  

and they think that's because i was  reading about this that there were certain  

institutions around the world were deliberately  doing it to try and say look you know  

this particular cryptocurrency is not  stable so you might have it one day  

and then tomorrow it might be worth a lot less yes  well the interest the interesting thing is that  

the el salvador have also been accused of  encouraging money laundering as well through  

their system so that's the big thing about bitcoin  is it is very attractive to people who want to get  

rid of a lot of money and to clean the money so  it comes out the other end it comes out of the  

machine as lovely cash i'm not sure the thing is  though everything's traceable uh apparently with  

that every transaction is traceable back to where  it came from yes i think we've talked about this  

the other week anyway yes well we could get into  a whole debate about cryptocurrencies but it's  

boring um some people the thing is some people  think it's a future other people think it isn't um  

nobody knows no nobody knows anyway i can't  see america giving up the dollar very easily no  

it's not really what we're talking about right  well you brought it up mr chunk yes well i started  

the conversation i brought up the fact that el  salvador is starting to accept well that's it  

you brought up the subject people are obviously  interested in it so technically the subject was  

el salvador not bitcoin to have a fighting thing  so to have a fighting chair having a conflict

we'll do

means the possibility of winning which will  require great effort so you might have a fighting  

chance to succeed but it means that you will have  to put a lot of effort into getting that success  

so to have a fighting chance  means the possibility of winning  

will require great effort so you might succeed  you have a fighting chance which means you are  

going to have to try as hard as you can you  will have to put a lot of work and effort  

into what you are doing yes i mean let's use an  example shall we um of um maybe succeeding in  

a sport somebody is quite good at it for example  tennis or something like that you might say oh um  

there's somebody that is in the final of a tennis  match uh but they've never done you know that well  

in the past and you say somebody says do you  think they're going to win and you might say  

they've got a fighting chance so another they  could win but they're going to have to put a  

lot of effort in whereas the person that they're  playing against might be the world's number one  

and they probably won't have to try that hard  so it's probably the underdog isn't it you're  

talking about the person who's the underdog  in a situation who's perceived as being less  

able but could win if they have a good day and  and do very well you might have a serious illness  

a serious illness and they might say what  what is what is the chance of them surviving  

do they have a fighting chance of surviving  which means they still have a long way to go  

before they can be seen as recovered  or well so you have a long battle ahead  

before you can overcome that illness you have  a fighting chance but the battle is not over  

uh yeah that's uh interesting though palmeira  says that we we used to have somebody here from  

el salvador um who was who was a member uh  of this group but we haven't seen them for a  

while uh what is anyone from el salvador watching  maybe they could send you a donation in bitcoin  

mr duncan then you can keep it for 10 years and  it's gone up 4 000 or something i don't know how  

i would receive bitcoin how do i receive it  does it come out of the back of my computer  

i think you have to have an exchange i think  anyone to be on an exchange anyway i don't want  

to keep saying this but we're not talking about  bitcoin oh we could do that maybe maybe we'll  

talk about that next week there's the same person  who said that my conversation was boring earlier  

about your favourite talking about it's only  boring if other people don't talk about it  

a man doesn't have a fighting chance to speak  

in a meeting of women oh dear i'm not saying  anything to that you can use that you can  

use fighting chance in the negative form  as well can't you yes uh if for example  

just to pull up on what rosa said if there is this  beautiful woman and you are you know very average  

and you've got a ordinary job and but you want  to ask her out with the view to marrying her uh  

you know your friends might say he doesn't have a  fighting chance so in other words even if he tried  

he still wouldn't succeed so you can use  a fighting chance in the negative as well  

as the positive well i think there's an even  better one you might describe that person as  

punching above their weight yes so you are trying  to attain something that is way out of your reach  

you are trying to get something that you will you  you will never have because it's out of reach you  

you are trying to get something that is there  but you will never get it because maybe you are  

not rich enough or good looking enough or famous  enough you are punching above your weight here's

to fight off something is to defend or battle  against something as we said earlier so that's  

quite good when we were talking about the  bees the bees the bees you fight off the bees  

they're buzzing around and you fight try  to fight off the bees if you're a beautiful  

uh woman you might be fighting off the men  

not literally but you might be hopefully not  but you might be fighting off the advances  

of of many men i mean as you know i mean i've  had this problem all my life uh mr duncan  

always having to fight off the advances of of  other men yeah and because because if it's if  

it's physically doing that that's not a good  thing you don't want that no you don't want  

to physically fight off men because that that's  not good but maybe if you have a lot of admirers  

so it's it it in that sense it's normally used  figuratively not not actually physically tomex  

here hello tomic hello tomic and tomic gives  us a good example you can fight off a cold  

or sickness yes um i'm fighting it off uh so if  you've got a cold you you know you can go to work  

uh and somebody might say oh you've got a bit  of a bad throat there and you're snivelling and  

i said yeah but i'm fighting it off in other words  you're resisting it you're saying i'm not going to  

succumb to that cold i'm going to carry on anyway  and brave it out but yeah that's a good example  

yes as i said earlier we can use the word  fight figuratively so you can fight something  

but you're not physically fighting it you  are using the word figuratively to show  

that there is a battle taking place  that's it of some sort for example  

fight of a cold yeah fight the flab fight  the flap that's what i'm doing at the moment  

so at the moment i have started fighting  the flab flab is a euphemism for  

body fat your fat so if you are getting fat  you will have lots of flab flab i didn't know  

it made a noise mr duncan well mine does  sometimes especially when i'm bending over

yeah so yeah so i mean in tomek's example  there you could uh if you had a cold so a  

cold is something that is generally regarded  as something that you're going to overcome  

you know it's it's not going to kill you  but some people have a cold and they sort of  

oh i've got a cold and they go to bed and they  feel all down and depressed um no that's not me  

well i get very bad colds mr duncan i'm a man  all men suffer from colds far more than women do

but you know if you decide that you're just gonna  because you can you can a cold's never that bad  

that you can't do most things i mean most  people can carry on working you know you  

can walk to the shops it's not like  flu whereas you know you are bed bound  

uh it's it's regarded as a minor  sort of irritating thing but if you  

adopt a different attitude and just carry on  anyway then you you know you're fighting it  

you're not going to let that cold psychologically  drag you down and stop you from doing something  

or it might be any any other illness here we go  then a physical fight can be described as a scrap  

so in british english we often describe a fight  between two people as a scrap i remember at school  

so if if you know maybe you are going to have  a fight after school with someone who is also  

in your school hopefully someone smaller than you  you might say that you are going to have a scrap  

it's a great word yes it's it's a scrap it's a  sort of a minor fight isn't it a scrap is sort of  

it doesn't go on for long and they just you  know maybe push each other around a bit it  

was really exciting at school when when people had  fights because everyone would would gather around  

in a circle and the the the two pupils  or the the two youngsters fighting  

in the middle and everyone was shouting  fight fight fight fight or they would say  

scrap scrap scrap do they did they  didn't ever happen oh my goodness  

well my school was a bit rough i mean yes it  was always if you have a scrap it's a sort of a  

it's it's sort of not not not a very serious fight  yes uh you know they're not sort of knocking their  

teeth out well no one was ever killed at school  but if you have a puncher a punch-up you're a  

next phrase there that is sort of the next step up  from a scrap a scrap you you know you might just  

be sort of pushing people around and you might  be on the floor most most most school fights in  

involved stretching each other's jumpers you can  always tell when someone had had a fight at school  

because their jumper or their sweater was was  stretched in a weird shape they never had any  

any injuries on their face but but their jumper  was always stretched out of shape you can have a  

punch-up punch-up maybe in the pub two men might  have a punch-up they get drunk and start fighting  

uh fisticuffs i know what you're going to say  mr duncan people don't say fisticuffs anymore  

well they might but fisticuffs and then of course  scream well we better say what it means it just  

means yes well fisticuffs means you're just  punching with your fists old-fashioned fighting  

no no gloves just bare knuckles and you are a  bit like peaky blinders that's what they all  

do in that piggy blinders they all go outside and  have fisticuffs in the street in their flat caps

altercation yes altercation altercation yes that's  uh have you missed out scrape i i just uh i just  

said scrape that is an alternative to scrap  yes you're sort of having a sort of a minor  

physical interaction yeah you're fighting a bit  of a oh i got into a bit of a scrape today at work  

that's it you know you just sort of it could  be shouting it could be shouting at somebody  

as well couldn't it if you get into a scrape  uh you could be just physical verbal fighting  

or you might just push somebody a bit i think  in a scrape you probably wouldn't be throwing  

punches no it's similar to scrap yes and  finally oh you might have a serious fight  

where lots of fists are being thrown  lots of punching you might have a brawl  

so brawl quite often involves more than two people  you might say a brawl might involve more than  

two people maybe in a pub or in the street there  might be lots of people fighting at the same time  

so we describe that as a brawl yes i like that  here's an interesting one from m e j g uh talking  

about women fighting now there is a phrase that  men tend to use when women are fighting and they  

call it a cat fight oh dear uh so when women are  fighting it tends to be called a cat fight um  

that might not be that well i'm just saying that's  what just saying that is a phrase that people use  

yes well another fight and i was just about to  say it's probably not politically correct i don't  

but it is no it is no i'm not criticizing you for  saying it i'm just putting my the the addendum on  

anyway but that phrase is used when women are  fighting they call it a cat fight and men call  

it a cat fight because it's very unusual to  see women fighting well i suppose it depends  

it depends where you are i mean i've seen lots  of women fight when i've been in nightclubs  

but but yeah um but as as as jg says it maybe  there's more scratching going on and sort of  

tearing of hair and uh thing it's a different type  of fighting usually you don't normally throwing  

punches i'm sure punches do go but you know when  women are fighting they're normally pulling each  

other's hair aren't they and scratching you know  they're remember they call it a cat right because  

cats i think you've pretty much explained that  i know i thought it was quite good yeah again  

well a lot of men and like watching women fight  

because there is a chance that  at some point they might kiss

anyway sergio says women like to fight in wet  t-shirts yeah yes in your mind that's you know  

you mean you like to see  women fighting in wet t-shirts  

yes that's very funny uh water is boiling for the  ravioli says belaruccia uh who's who's uh has a  

brother uh and it's his birthday today yes happy  birthday once again claudia to your brother yes

rosa says i saw a cat fighting it was horrible yes  on yeah exactly we see a lot of pigeons fighting  

don't worry when you say a cat fighting it wasn't  two women i don't know whether rosa means it was  

two women fighting because she's put fighting at  the end does she mean i did you do you mean rosie  

you saw a cat fight i.e two women fighting  because if you use the phrase cat fighting  

you would imply that it was  an actual meow cat fighting uh  

so yes was it women fighting in which case it's a  cat fight and you wouldn't put ing on the end were  

they wearing wet t-shirts brother wearing uh our  real cat says rose yeah that's it so the english  

was very correct exactly well that's what is the  perception that's what it can look a bit like  

sometimes when women are fighting it does  look like you know the claws are going  

uh the nails are going uh it's a horrible  horrible thing to see actually women fighting  

i mean men fighting you expect it what what  would happen if two women were fighting and  

then you threw two cats at them and they  started fighting as well so you'd have a  

you'd have a double cat fight so the cats would  be fighting and so with the women it'd be quite a  

mess really when you think about it you can also  have dog fight yes dog fight if two aeroplanes  

are pursuing each other through the sky one  of them trying to shoot the other one down  

we call that a dogfight two aeroplanes  you see them in war films two planes yeah

that is a dog fight is this a children's channel  mr duncan a children's channel what do you mean  

why oh yes uh satorina wants to know what  belarusia has stuffed the ravioli with

i want to know what you've  stuffed inside your ravioli

mmm is it meat or is it cheese you wish ah is it  vegetarian is it uh meat based we want to know  

okay but anyway we probably won't know because um  tom rock says it's gone one step further beyond

see that's the thing women fighting is exciting  to men i don't know whether you know this woman  

yes i've said this already i know you've said  it but i'm just reiterating it um because they

um right well it's uh it's ten minutes past  four misses well i'm still doing the uh words  

a battle you can also have skirmish as well i  like that word it's it's nice to say skirmish  

skirmish yeah clash two things might clash why  should we explain what skirmish means a skirmish  

is basically a an attack or a battle a skirmish  and two things fighting but it's it's sort of  

not much goes on so two armies instead of  all-out fighting they might have a skirmish  

and they might just have a little you know a  small little fight by maybe some of the fighters  

on both sides it's it's it's a sort of a minor  battle a skirmish it's a sort of a minor battle  

uh but you might uh have a you know you can  doesn't have to be armed you can have a skirmish  

you could say what a skirmish was somebody at  work you know you had a you had a small fight

so two things can clash it means they do not  go together they disagree a conflict also can  

all be described as a fight a battle skirmish  clash conflict they can all be described  

as a fight here's a good one from uh  stannislav people are fighting like  

cats and dogs although formerly it is cat and dog  so even in the oxford dictionary they say cat and  

dog although most people say cats and dogs but  those two women were fighting like cat and dog  

either in wet t-shirts or in no t-shirts  okay depending on your preference  

clash royale is a game says  rosa haven't heard of that  

well it's a game that's probably the reason why  

clash royale it's like battle royale one of the  worst films i've ever seen when i say worst i mean  

violent battle royale a japanese film it is  quite a quite a horrendous movie where all these  

teenagers are forced to adios each other in  in very violent ways not very nice actually

two people might come to blows oh  i was gonna say yes so stanislav if  

just to explain if you describe people as fighting  like cat and dog it means they really are going at  

each other yes uh just as you would expect a  cat and duck so that's quite a serious fight  

they're going at it like cat and dog although  that can makes it mean something else as well  

unless of course the cat has a gun yes in which  case it's very short two people might come to  

blows they start to physically fight punching  with each other so physically so if you punch  

someone you give them a blow so a blow is when  one thing hits another so a person's fist might  

hit another person in the face you might get into  a fight it's just a sort of another way of saying  

it they came to blows so in other words they they  fought and they actually started punching you're  

indicating if you say they came to blows you're  indicating that they actually started throwing  

punches because that's what you you you say when  you punch somebody you're throwing a punch uh yeah  

the general term for fighting is violence so  we think of things that are happening that are  

causing a disturbance or i suppose  the other word we could use infraction  

there is violent behaviour taking place so we  often see fighting is as a form of violence  

although even if you are just pushing each other  around without actually causing any harm to  

each other you could still say that it's violent  because it is aggressive you are using aggression  

you can rose are given given as a good example you  can fight sleep or fight against falling asleep  

by trying to stay awake you're fighting  or you or you're fighting to stay awake  

is what you could also say yes  um you're fighting to stay awake  

a fight between people might involve  punching kicking using your feet  

so that that's it you see when when you're  fighting someone you often think of hitting  

them with your fists but actually your feet can  be just as useful if you are going to kick someone  

slapping slapping so it's a bit like us so when  we're having a fight we often just slap each other  

like a couple of girls nothing that never happens  a fight between people might involve a weapon

yes so when a weapon is used and i suppose  when you think about it you can use anything  

i wonder what the most unusual thing is  that a person has ever used as a weapon  

can you think of something really unusual maybe a  banana perhaps someone used a banana and and they  

they pushed it into someone's eye

during a fight so you can use anything i  suppose if you can hold it in your hand  

and it's heavy i suppose you could use it as a  weapon anything really sergio must use a vodka  

bottle obviously an empty one yeah it wouldn't be  full wouldn't be full that would be such a waste  

oh my goodness no it might uh it might break  and all that lovely vodka will fly everywhere

you can fight against yourself says christina  christina you are right yes so your own flaws or  

your own problems or the things that you often  keep doing wrongly your mistakes if you ignore  

your own consciousness maybe you're thinking that  you should do the right thing but then you ignore  

it so you can be your own worst enemy you can  fight against yourself yes if you fight against  

yourself the implication is that you are um you're  not helping yourself with your behaviour all the  

things you're doing you're actually uh you know  giving yourself a disadvantage by doing something  

you're fighting against yourself can i just  point out we are not encouraging people to fight  

today's lesson is is just looking at all of  the words and uses of the words so i am not  

condoning fighting or violence before anyone  complains oh oh mr duncan we can't believe you  

were talking about fighting today well bit late  for that mr duncan why are you encouraging people  

well it's there now you see it's on the live  stream so i've said it even if even if i've said

some good expressions you you can fight the good  fight yes i believe that is biblical if i'm not  

mistaken fight the good fight there's a well-known  christian song with that phrase in it to do the  

virtuous thing or the right thing is to fight  the good fight you can also fight on which means  

to not give up you fight on you don't give  up you don't stop you continue to battle  

against the thing that you are fighting or  fighting against i'm going to fight on yes if if  

if you wanted to get a promotion at work and  you went for an interview and you didn't get it  

you might say somebody might say to you i'm  so sorry i expect you'll give up now won't you  

uh and you might say no i'm going to fight  on i'm going to carry on trying to get that  

promotion uh you're not going to means you're  not giving up on something that's it whatever  

that might be yes so whatever it is you will fight  on and then of course fight through you can fight  

through which means to struggle from one place to  another you fight through a crowd of people you  

are pushing through them you fight through a group  of people you are trying to get from one place  

to another but there are lots of people in the  way so you have to fight through maybe you have  

to fight through the rain because the weather  is so harsh and bad but you still have to get  

through the rain you have to fight through  

the rain i had to fight through the crowds to  get to the exit in the concert i had to i had to  

yeah fight through yeah that's fine carry on  the final one before we go is fight or flight  

an interesting one it is uh an expression fight  or flight which describes the natural instinct  

to either stay or flee when faced with a dangerous  situation so when you are faced with a dangerous  

situation maybe something is coming to attack  you in nature in the animal kingdom there are two  

choices you fight or you get out of there get out  of there you leave as quickly as possible fight or  

flight and that is it that's often automatic the  fight or flight mechanism inbuilt in all most  

animals not all animals is often automatic you  instantly assess that situation and decide whether  

it's safer to run away or to actually confront  who whatever it is that's attacking you yes um  

i would personally always go for the flight  tom rocks use an expression i'm fighting for  

my freedom yes that's it so many countries  often fighting for freedom uh if they're  

living in countries that have oppressive  governments or institutions they're fighting  

back and they're fighting for their freedom to  express themselves in the way that they want to  

you might fight for your rights yes so maybe  your your rights are being taken away from you  

you have to fight for them or maybe you are  in a section of society that has no rights  

and you are trying to gain them you are trying to  get those rights quite often you have to fight for  

them in fact if you look over history you will  notice that no no freedom has ever been given  

without a fight ever and that's quite interesting  so freedom is not something that you are  

ever given without having to suffer some some  hardship or or some sort of battle taking place  

yes um mapax says there are three choices there's  fight flight but there's freeze as well that is  

true that uh that yes you're right actually  because some people are so frightened they'll  

actually freeze uh so if a lion was coming if you  saw a lion or maybe a you know somebody with a gun  

in fact that that's often i've read that before  some people are in situations where somebody  

they're confronted with somebody with a gun  some people will just freeze and they won't  

do anything they won't run they won't fight  they won't do anything so actually technically  

uh mapak you are actually right but we talk about  the fight or flight mechanism as a separate thing  

but in reality people will either fight run off  or they'll actually freeze if you're so frightened  

you literally can just freeze i mean  that's happened to me when i've been  

on up a ladder at heights uh you  know you just freeze by the fear  

you know and that's often that's the deadly  thing i think if you freeze quite often anyway  

right mr duncan um lovely to be here today um with  you all it was a long one it was a longer one and

and we are going to have what are we having today  a cup of tea cup of tea and i'm gonna have a piece

coated the flat roof in waterproof material yes  our waterproof paint so that we don't get any more  

leaks even though it it stinks so we are watching  a bit of columbo this afternoon as well sunday  

afternoon would not be the same without a bit of  columbo on our televisions as well so that's also  

what we're doing this afternoon i am back with you  on wednesday by the way so i will be back with you

well i i'm i'm i'm acting i'm  actually you know sad and depressed

i don't have to fight my way out of the  studio because there's nobody in the way
