we are back oh my goodness how has your week been  

it's been a long one it seems like a long time  since i was last here anyway we are back together  

and it's so nice to be with you once more yes  this is english addict coming to you live from  

the birthplace of the english language which  just happens to be oh my goodness it's england

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england  how are you today are you okay i hope so  

are you feeling happy today i hope you are  feeling good i'm not too bad thank you very much  

thanks also can i say a big thank you very  much to those who sent me messages asking  

about my health i'm not feeling too bad although  i have to be honest with you i still don't feel  

100 percent i don't know what happened to  my body last week and also the week before  

i caught a cold from mr steve and i'm still  slowly shaking it off if you shake something off  

it means you are trying to get rid of it you  are trying to push it away you are trying to  

shake it off so at the moment i am trying to  shake off the cold that has been bugging me  

literally literally i've had a bug and it's almost  gone i'm feeling much better yesterday we were out  

and about i suppose i should mention this straight  away i will mention it now we were out yesterday  

at the much wenlock christmas fair it  didn't happen last year unfortunately  

last year there was no much wenlock  christmas fair because of well you know why  

the curse of 2020 was affecting everything  last year including our local town fair  

which always happens at christmas just before  christmas arrives in fact so we went there  

yesterday we had a lovely time  even though it was freezing cold  

i will say this it was cold windy it was rather  unpleasant but we tried our best and yes we did  

do some filming and we will be with you at the  christmas fair on video a little bit later on so  

i hope you will stick around for that of course we  have mr steve here as well mr steve will be here  

with us also today we have lots of other things  to talk about we are talking about body parts

parts of the body and it is amazing to think  that there are many use uses of body parts  

that we can use in phrases and idioms believe  it or not so that is what we are talking about  

we are also talking about modern times we often  like to talk about well we talk about history  

i suppose we talk about things that happened in  the past but if there is one thing that we love  

talking about these days because there is so much  going on at the moment around the world generally

so we are never short of something  to talk about when we are discussing  

now so that is also something we will be  looking at later on as well as i said mr  

steve will be here also sharing  some more of his lovely wisdom

by the way if you don't know who i am my name  is duncan there it is it says it on the screen  

just below my face and i talk about english  i love english very much you might say that i  

am an english addict that's what it says up there  you see and i have a feeling that maybe you are  

also an english addict as well so welcome everyone  welcome one welcome all and i hope you will have  

a good time here today yes we have made it all  the way to the end of another weekend and it is  

a new month of course december is here christmas  is on the way on the way on the way on the way

my voice is almost back to normal not quite  it is almost back to normal it's on its way  

slowly but surely

it is taking its time my voice has almost returned  even though i don't feel great i have to be honest  

with you i went out yesterday to the christmas  fair and on the way back home i felt really unwell  

i felt so tired and almost i don't know it it  felt as if all of the energy was leaving my body  

so i think maybe this is what steve said steve  said that maybe it's because i've been resting  

during my cold and maybe yesterday  was a bit of a shock for my body  

going outside suddenly i must be honest with you  it was freezing cold we were walking around cold  

and hungry but fortunately we managed to  find something to eat and also we managed  

to find a lovely place to sit down and have a  refreshing hot drink as well all of that coming up  

later on other things happening yesterday as well  all will be revealed a little bit later on so i  

hope you will stick around for that as well how do  you like my new lessons i am posting a new lesson  

every week so i'm making new lessons some of the  lessons will be remakes of older lessons so that  

is one thing to think about when i talk about my  new lessons some of them are new lessons they are  

they are newly made however they are also remakes  of some of my earlier lessons some of my older  

lessons and yes there will be another one posted  on tuesday another new lesson to look forward to

are you ready for christmas now i know that not  everyone celebrates christmas before anyone tells  

me yeah mr duncan we don't all celebrate christmas  i know that but there are some people who  

are so if you are celebrating christmas have you  prepared everything many of the christmas lights  

have already been turned on here in the uk so most  shopping centers most towns and cities now have  

their christmas illumination switched on i love  that word illuminations it basically means lights  

the lights have been turned on everything  now looks bright and festive in the evening  

so that's what's happening here but what about  you are you ready for christmas are you preparing  

anything i know last year a lot of people made  plans but unfortunately they had to cancel them  

because of you know what the curse of 2020 so  this year i'm hoping that a lot of you will be  

able to at least have some normality i hope this  year things will be a little bit more more normal  

a little bit more normal than last year let's say  we can only wish hello also to amarawa oh more

freezing cold boiling hot it is very cold it  is freezing cold it is very hot it is boiling

we are rather busy today on the live chat the  weather isn't too bad it is clear we've had a lot  

of rain a lot of wind but there it is there is the  view outside the window it is a little bit murky  

and very cold it really does feel as if winter  has arrived and i suppose you might say that  

officially it is now winter so that's  it from the first of december it is now

meteorological winter so winter has definitely  arrived but you can see everything now looking  

rather crisp also quite autumn autumnal as  well autumnal it's not an easy word to say that  

when things are oh autumnal it means  that it looks and feels like autumn

cold was yes it is boiling hot so what about  christmas are you ready have you prepared yourself  

i think this year because everyone was in  lockdown and everyone was locked in their houses  

i think this year people went out and  they went out shopping a little bit more  

what's the word a little bit more energetic this  year they were much more energetic and early  

with their shopping because people were glad that  they could leave the house and go shopping again  

so this year i think a lot of people have  prepared for christmas much earlier than usual  

i think this year it has been rather different  we will have to wait and see am i ready  

am i prepared for christmas i will be honest  with you no i'm not i am not ready for christmas  

at all i haven't even put my christmas lights  on the outside of the house yet i have some  

lights outside but not many but i  haven't put my lovely festive lights  

that i always put up every year so i haven't  done them yet we haven't put the christmas tree  

up that's still in the attic it's still locked  away in the loft unfortunately hello also to

oh mega mega car i love your name by the  way i don't like the fact that christmas  

is on saturday this year yes of course it is  yes christmas day is on saturday which means  

the sunday live stream will be on  boxing day the day after christmas day  

very interesting so i think we will be joining  you on boxing day which is the day after christmas  

i don't like the fact that christmas  on christmas is on saturday this year  

saturday is always a holiday for me i will not  get any extra holiday anyway i love christmas  

it is my favorite day of the year so you will  be working is that what you're saying you will  

be working on christmas day i don't like the sound  of that hello also you fun euphonium or euphonium  

i think that is a type of musical instrument  it's like a big trumpet that's been wrapped

i am going to take a break in a moment we are  going to take a look at the christmas fair that

might find disgusting let's just say it is me  putting food into my mouth and then after this

well hello everyone hi everybody this is mr duncan  welcome to another live stream and i hope you are  

enjoying today's festivities here on youtube now  here we are on saturday so we are now recording  

this and we are in a very special place we are at  the much wenlock christmas fair something that is  

held almost every year unfortunately last year  there was no christmas fair due to well you know  

what happened last year i think we all do besides  myself there is also mr steve hello mr steve hello  

hello mr duncan and hello lovely viewers around  the world yes it's very exciting we're here once  

again doing a but it's not quite a live stream but  you'll be seeing this on sunday and there are lots  

of people milling about milling about what is that  they're wandering around so if people are milling  

about it means they are wandering around sort  of wandering sort of randomly around good uh and  

they're looking at all the the lovely stalls  yes there is a lot on sale here today i have  

noticed there are a lot of people selling arts  and crafts i have a feeling that during lockdown  

lots of people have been learning some new  skills including drawing painting carving  

screen printing all sorts of things all  sorts of things some of them really nice  

and some of them not so nice i am not going  to say which ones are which because i'm  

i am a gentleman another thing you might  notice today is it's bloody windy it's  

very windy in fact we had a bit of an exciting  walk into town takes us about 25 minutes through  

woods where the winds were blowing howling and we  were expecting large branches to fall down on top  

of us you see this is what we do the sacrifices we  make for your live streams putting our own lives  

in danger i suppose we could have  driven in uh and parked the car but  

there's nowhere to park because it's packed full  of people yes very much there are lots of people  

i'll just show you behind me so that you you  will see there are lots of people behind me  

there is also a grave we are standing  right next to an old grave so things  

i think actually steve i have to be honest with  you steve i think the gravestones really do set  

the mood uh do you right oh you mean it's a  sombre i wouldn't have said it was a sombre  

well i went for the affair how about about the the  just the fact that it's freezing cold and windy  

it is i mean it looks nice the sun's out um  but we're wrapped up well we're wrapped up  

to protect ourselves against the cold i remarked  to you this morning mr duncan that this is the  

first time i've worn this ski jacket for many  years that shows how cold it is because this  

stops the wind going through and i feel quite  toasty and warm good i'm glad you do because i  

i certainly don't feel toasty and warm  at the moment now one of the things i  

want to mention is last week of course last  week i was sick in bed i was ill last week  

i hate the light on this camera it's awful well  it's a very bright sunlight right in our eyes mr  

d yes well i can't get away from it you see there  we go shall i try that well now it's behind us  

but but at least people can see our beautiful  faces and they can see what else is going on yes  

a lot of activity can you hear in the distance the  sound of a brass band no i think it's you steve  

the one thing with dogs the one thing i have  noticed there are lots of people with dogs here  

today and they are being rather annoying anyway  enough of this we are now going to take you for  

a little wonder around much wenlock's christmas  fair we are going to see what is going on here  

today and we might be back later i'm sure we will  be always back later one thing we are going to do  

later on we are going to try and find something  nice to eat so we might join you later on for that  

but for now let's take a look around  this year's much wenlock christmas fair

okay we've managed to find somewhere to to  get warm after walking around and also after  

eating the biggest hot dog i've ever had in my  life i have to be honest mr steve had a really  

big burger as well i must be honest i was  ready for it and now we are having a cake  

and also a cup of coffee in the church look we are  in the sacred place i mean of all places for us to  

end up today a couple of heathens sheltering in  a religious building yes we are very nice though  

we are taking sanctuary here in the church because  basically we've been standing up for the last  

three hours filming yes and we're freezing cold  and we need somewhere to sit down and warm up our  

cold fingers numb fingers our fingers are freezing  cold everything's cold in fact i think even my my  

hot dog has frozen we don't want to know about  that mr duncan don't be so rude we're in a place  

of worship the vicar's watching oh yes let's be  on our best behaviour not only is the vicar here  

but also father christmas let me just turn the  camera around oh no i can't it doesn't let me on  

here stupid iphone 13. we're there there is santa  claus behind me can you see him there is santa  

claus father christmas is here hello ho ho ho ho  ho ho oh did you see that father christmas came by  

he asked me if i've been naughty or nice and  i said that i've been a little bit naughty  

and also a little bit nice mr steve has his coffee  i'm i'm wiping the rim oh okay uh because when we  

were handed these cups of coffee the lady that  handed them to us said oh here's your coffee  

oh i see you know with a hand all around the  bit that you drink out of so so mr steve now  

is is cleaning his rim i'm cleaning if i don't  want to catch any germs that they might have  

if there is ever a place if there is ever  a place for cleaning your rim it is inside  

a church okay we're going to go and we're going  to let you carry on enjoying today's live stream

in well i was going to say europe  but we are here we are still alive

hello hello wonderful viewers hello mr duncan here  he is here's the guy yesterday who was cleaning  

his rim or should i say cleaning the rim of his  cup in the church a lot of people are already  

saying steve that it's unusual to see people  eating food in the church but i don't know why  

we seem very relaxed here in much wenlock with  the church rules i i think tradition i think  

there's been i think i don't think there's a  problem with church of england people eating in  

the church because of course on that saturday on  yesterday this was an opportunity for the church  

to uh make some money to increase its funds by  selling uh drinks and selling cakes and inviting  

people in you see but the church particularly  the church of england who are losing lots of  

lots of parishioners lots of people don't go to  church anymore are trying all sorts of things  

to try and encourage people back so opening the  church up on a day like yesterday encouraging  

people to come in uh i mean if they were to say  you can't eat in here you can't drink in here  

well the church was the only place you could  go to be warm because it was cold outside so  

they've been very clever they're inviting people  in uh i don't think there's any sort of religious  

objections to eating in a church well no  necessarily so it's allowed and they've probably  

made a lot of money because there were probably  100 people in that church well what i was going to  

say steve is every sunday they they eat and drink  in the church anyway don't know they they have the  

they have the wafer the little bit of bread  and also the wine so if you can have bread  

and wine on sunday then i'm sure you can have a  little bit of cake and also a cup of coffee on  

other days of the week and the other thing  is tradition the other thing of course is  

churches around the uk english churches and maybe  other churches as well are falling to pieces they  

are starting to to fall apart so there is always  something that needs repairing with our churches  

quite often the roof yes the roof is falling off  or or big lumps of stone work is falling off so  

there is always something that has to be paid  for with a church because many of them are old  

some of them are maybe seven or eight hundred  years old some of them even a thousand years old  

so yesterday was a good opportunity for the church  to open its doors to invite lots of people in and  

then those people might think oh this is lovely  in here everyone's a friendly the vicar said  

hello maybe i'll come back on sunday uh so it's  sort of advertising and eating and drinking in a  

church is not i mean you wouldn't have a main meal  but it doesn't show disrespect not a restaurant

can you imagine that a church restaurant that  would be amazing so so you could have some proper  

tables some cafe or restaurant tables with candles  and maybe maybe you can sing some hymns or say  

some prayers whilst eating your your lovely big  meal well something that beatrice uh pointed out  

is that uh very observant seeing that people were  not wearing masks ah yes well we were surprised  

because a new rule has come in now that in the  uk so all throughout the summer we haven't had to  

wear masks uh at all and and but that rule changed  last week so i was quite surprised to see that  

people were not wearing masks inside the church  um i was surprised about that but we weren't  

we weren't no but because other people weren't yes  and we were sitting at a good distance away from  

from other people yes we kept we kept our social  distance anyway we were in a church so so we'd be  

protected you see so coronavirus coronavirus would  not be able to get into the church so because it's  

sacred so all of the viruses and all of the bugs  would be outside trying to get into the church  

but they wouldn't be able to you see no no because  it's safe in there because of the power the power

uh christmas market says magda magdalene are  closed in bavaria yes um they're all open here um  

i mean outside it's generally safe anyway  because lots of wind the air is dispersing  

the virus so being outside i think is quite  safe anyway anyway um can i just can we just  

stop talking about coronavirus now no because  well i'm only joking okay um that's a great joke  

by the way palmeira makes there's a few points  about christmas that people have made okay um  

palmyra is making the comment that uh of course  on the ukrainian borders now there's all these  

migrants lots of freezing cold migrants and  that we ought to think about them maybe you  

know when we're having fun at christmas time that  there's there's freezing cold thousands of them  

um trying to get a new life somewhere else  no food living in tents it must be horrible  

so yes it's always worth remembering those who  are less fortunate than ourselves at this time  

of the year angela says what a great idea having a  restaurant in a church i think so yes they should  

have they should turn part of the church into a  restaurant and serve actual food maybe it may be  

sunday dinner or a sunday roast so and i think  people would then go to church wouldn't they  

that's a great way they should have some sort  of incentive something to tempt people to go  

to church maybe maybe you can pay them give them  all 10 pounds as they come through the door and  

then they can spend that money on something in  the church or maybe buy some food in the church  

i think churches if they want to survive i think  they have to start thinking like businesses  

they have to start thinking like a business they  have to find new ways of bringing in some revenue  

yes we have to wear masks  everywhere in italy says christina  

well we did until the summer and then that rule  was taken away but it's now been reintroduced  

but it doesn't seem to be being enforced yes to  any great degree i think i think shops if you  

go into a small shop i think i think they still  insist on wearing a mask but i think the church  

is a big place it was open it was airy it was it  wasn't very warm in there for those wondering why  

we were wearing our hats in the church but it  was considerably warmer than outside yes but  

still but still not still not nice it but it was  okay it was much better than being outside in the  

freezing cold it was a welcome place of refuge and  somewhere to sit down something which uh would be  

worth feeding back to the organizers of the much  wenlock christmas fair is that they need to put  

areas assign areas where you can sit down they  need to have a tent with lots of seats in that  

you can sit down because there was literally  nowhere to sit down lots of street vendors  

selling food but nowhere to sit down and  eat it so you had to stand up very awkward  

to stand up as you could see from the video thank  you by the way for everyone who admired my long  

big juicy hot dog and can i say it was absolutely  delicious it was lovely it was the biggest hot dog  

i've ever eaten in my life and mr steve had  you had a burger didn't you yes i thought  

they were somewhat overpriced they were but  i mean let's tell the viewers what it cost  

well for your shall we not okay i think that might  be interesting okay then would it be interesting  

my sausage my big sausage was six pounds which  is very expensive and my burger was seven pounds  

yes uh so that's about i don't know nine euros  probably which is a lot more than you would pay at  

mcdonald's and i the comment i made yesterday of  course is that mcdonald's burgers are quite good  

uh there are other fast food outlets burger  king would be another one uh so you get a  

good burger at mcdonald's so if you're going  to pay twice as much which is what that cost  

it's got to be substantially better it wasn't  it was better but they just sliced the price  

they're just trying to make some money and they're  only operating from a from a tent so their costs  

are very low so yeah overpriced but then that's  what you would expect in that type of event okay  

they they although i didn't hear you complaining  yesterday when you were shoving that burger into  

your mouth and i was eating my hot dog it  was it was lovely it was i would have paid  

probably more because i was so hungry and  cold and tired yes my sausage was very big  

it was very big but it was also a  little bit cold around the edges

reflects that you don't have to wear masks inside  a church because father christmas was protecting  

us that's it so maybe not just the lord maybe  father christmas we're also protecting us if  

you notice in that video santa claus was wearing a  mask he actually did have a mask on did he yes as  

he walked past you could see his his little  blue mask poking from underneath his beard  

i don't know how he was able to grow his beard  over his mask that's that's a that's quite  

a scientific breakthrough there you can grow  you can grow your facial hair through the mask  

a couple of people asking am i going  to be singing any christmas songs  

and jimmy says that he's still what listening to  the one from last year christine has asked as well  

seems to be a quite a force mr duncan yes well  that's grateful force of people yes well i would  

love to but as i explained earlier a lot of  music popular music is also under copyright so  

mr steve has a selection of christmas songs  there is a video on my youtube channel and  

i might put the link under here later on so if  you want to watch mr steve and listen to mr steve  

singing some lovely christmas songs the video  link will be under here i think people were sort  

of suggesting that maybe i do some new ones no  well i've just if we've got time if we've got time  

steve we can't because of copyright yeah but no  but we use what about the ones from last year  

well they were all slammed with copyright claims  how were they yes right even though we used uh  

backing tracks that i paid for that doesn't  that doesn't matter did we but we could  

could we keep it on in the end or not yes well  it's still on there we've just advertised it  

we'll see what we can do we'll see i'm getting the  feeling steve isn't listening to me so i will put  

the link under here to the video that still exists  and is still on youtube new ones people want new  

ones even though even though warner music are  now getting most of the copyright from it from  

the monetization is going to them  multi-billion dollar corporation yes  

disgraceful great anyway steve belarus is cooking  oh she's always cooking and today it's souffle  

souffle be careful be careful with your souffle  because if you open the door of your oven  

too soon it will sink it will deflate  like a balloon sure belarusian nose  

mega makes an interesting point um that  christmas day this year is on a saturday it is  

and uh so in the uk if christmas day which is  normally a a bank holiday or a public holiday  

if it occurs on a saturday or a sunday we get  an extra day off on the following monday yes  

because that's what that's what we  do but not uh not where mega lives  

if it's on a saturday tough luck you don't  get any extra holidays but in the uk we do  

it's the same so if christmas day and boxing  day our saturday and sunday we get two more  

days off we get the monday and the tuesday off  yeah so there's an extra holiday so it actually  

becomes an extra long weekend yes very nice oh  by the way that means if christmas day is on  

saturday that means that we will be with you on  boxing day so the live stream on sunday the 26th  

of december will be boxing day and we will be  here the day after christmas we will be here  

live in the studio celebrating christmas with you  it will be exciting yes i think so i'm looking  

forward to it that's going to be that's going  to be the highlight of my year how sad is that

it's very exciting being on on a  saturday on a sunday we love it  

rosa uh has asked what is the opposite of freezing  cold that's it yes i've already answered that one  

okay so if something is freezing cold well  you could say what it is boiling hot yes  

if you're freezing cold in the winter in the  summer you would be boiling hot so that's the  

opposite yes because obviously they're not to  be taken literally because you're not as cold  

as naught degrees freezing water yeah and  you're not as hot as 100 degrees boiling water  

so the the exaggeration uh in that in  those two phrases uh really lends itself  

to saying how extreme you are feeling yeah  i'm freezing cold but you're not literally

sweet things crisps savory snacks however there  is one thing that you should never ever buy for me  

at christmas time you know i love  chocolate and you know i love sweet things  

but there is one thing that you should never  give me and you know what that is steve  

uh what do you hate mushrooms no something  something chocolatey that you don't like yeah  

that i don't like that you don't like something  chocolatey that you do if you give if you give  

this to me i will throw it i will throw it back  in your face disrespectful and you will never  

be allowed around my house how ungrateful  ever again i'll tell you steve it's these  

oh right yes ferrero rocher they  might be the most disgusting  

chocolates ever now i'm sure there will be people  who say mr duncan you idiot they are gorgeous but  

i can't stand these and and i i i don't know  anyone i don't know any person that likes these  

as a chocolate they they hate them so if if you  come around to my house and you give me these  

you you won't be staying very long i will  be kicking you right out the house and  

these will be following you it's close  behind your head they are heavily advertised  

here in the uk around christmas time uh but  i i don't think they're all right but they're  

they're always they're  advertised as something that is  

you know like the best chocolate ever in the  world and then when you bite into them you  

realize they're not the best in the world and they  are over hyped i think i don't know why i think  

it's the gold packaging they've managed to market  themselves in a very successful way as an upmarket  

uh sweet after dinner type thing isn't  it yes i think so um but but the thing is  

nobody likes these so when you think of other  chocolates and other types of chocolate generally  

you find people like them but  i don't know anyone who likes  

ferrero rocher it's like eating sawdust  off the floor that's been flavoured with

chocolate i'm not even sure if the chocolate is  very good it's very popular in italy sylvia okay

that perhaps you would like to explain what do you  mean by my presentation so these chocolates back  

to my my subject these chocolates they really  are quite uh horrible a lot of people like them

doesn't surprise me so i think this this is  actually made from all of the the nuts that have  

been left on the floor so they sweep them up and  they put them into ferrero rocher but i i might  

get sued for this by the way but that doesn't  matter because i've got no money so you can't sue  

someone without money so i does anyone like this  just maybe i'm wrong maybe i'm completely wrong  

and these are the most amazing things ever but i i  can't they are disgusting beatrice has used a very  

interesting word to describe ferrero rocher  says that they're very popular in argentina  

very cloying cloying now that's not a popular word  that's used in english but it is a lovely word  

um it's sort of sticky sort of yeah clois sticks  together sort of clumps and sort of difficult to  

get rid of in your teeth um that's a very very  interesting word for you to use and very very  

well used beatrice very good cloying i love that  word cloying everyone has their own personal taste  

i agree with you but i don't know anyone who  likes these i think it's because you don't like

don't like them give me something soft give me  some some beautiful swiss chocolate something nice

are very very expensive which we very rarely buy  because they're expensive godiva yes g-o-d-i-v-a

we'll never know we weren't there we'll never know  but but yes those are unbelievably high quality

yes my goodness they're gorgeous you normally  i've said this before you normally see them in  

in fridges at uh at airport uh in airport lounges  in the in the way you buy stuff in the airport  

duty-free area um but yes if you like chocolate  combined with hazelnuts you would probably like  

ferrero rocher if you don't then you won't but you  don't like you see i like fruit and nut chocolate

to talk about the english language we are  here today discussing all of these things  

i suppose one of the subjects i would like  to look at briefly is the the subject of  

the present the present and i'm not talking about  christmas presents i'm talking about the here and  

now expressing the present way of living if  there is one thing i've noticed over the past  

three or four years more people have become  interested in in in a much wider range of topics  

and things that maybe a few years ago people  would not take any notice of especially things  

like politics so i suppose since i would say since  2016 a lot of people have become more interested  

in politics discussing politics and sometimes

over their politics however when we  generally talk about the present the  

present way of living we are talking about  the things that are happening now the present  

however we often look also back over  history and there is a great expression  

those who don't learn from history are  destined to repeat it in the present  

or in the future so i like that so expressing  the present way of living and i thought we would  

have a look at some ways of doing that so we talk  about modern times modern times so anything modern  

is something that was not there before but  is now can you think of one modern thing  

think of something recently that that has  come along that didn't exist the telephone  

recently i think you'll find the telephone  has been around for about 100 years television  

internet yes computers yes okay there's a whole  pile of them there i would say electric vehicles  

yes ah you see so that's the one i  wanted to actually mention is something  

recent so when we talk about modern times we  are talking about things that have come along  

things that have come along to to change  the way we live so electric vehicles  

we do use electric vehicles things  powered by electricity that in the past  

weren't so i remember in the 1980s do you remember  there was a lovely scientist called clive sinclair  

and he came up with the idea for an electric  car can you remember what it was called  

you mean the the c5 the sinclair c5 yes it  was a little it looked like it looked like  

like a bathtub on wheels but it was powered  by electricity was it and at the time at the  

time people said oh that's crazy no one's ever  going to to drive around in in an electric car  

and here we are now in 2021 approaching 2022 and  now more and more people are now driving they are  

driving electric cars so i would say that's a good  sign of modern times things that have come along  

and they've also changed the way in which we  do things so petrol well they say that petrol  

is going but but we all know it isn't we all  know it is not going anywhere that's a debate  

we don't want to get into no uh electric cars  should we be going that direction or not um  

quite a lot of doubt as to whether they  can pull that off um rotten rotten roses  

that's an interesting name uh it says that  modern refers to the film modern times  

which was made in 1936 that will be  charles chaplin yes yes a very famous film  

and that that was one of the films that actually  ended up causing him to be accused of being  

on the other side let's just so a lot of people  accused charles chaplin of being a communist  

and modern times was almost seen by some people  not many as as a communist a piece of communist  

propaganda because it was all about workers  but in fact it wasn't it was all about modern  

modern technology or maybe the way  in which people were becoming used  

as machines so it's a great film a a really good  film in that there are some wonderful sequences  

so some of the most innovative uses of of  camera work and editing that that i've seen  

ever in a movie of course that that was a time  when uh uh america were very paranoid about  

anything to do with communism and anyone seemed to  be supporting it or you know even if they weren't  

were sort of vilified in society and cast out and  yes i think he fell victim to that he did as did  

many other people actors in in you know decades to  come well he was he actually went to britain for a  

short break and then realized he discovered  that he wasn't welcomed back they would not  

allow him to go back i think it was something  like 20 years or something it was a very long  

period of time that charles chaplin was  not allowed to go back to the united states

of course he was born here uh in the first  place he had a natural second home here  

spent his last days in switzerland and he died  and died on christmas day 1977. did he wow yes  

we know tomek's only joking uh we know that uh  there's you know banter funny banter goes on  

uh between us on the live  chat so yes we can find but uh  

yes okay so yeah modern times mr duncan yes well  the thing is you're always living in modern times  

that you never you look at any period of time so  when that was written in 1936 that film was made  

there's always something modern because  that's the one thing about living in  

the last 100 years in particular is that  nothing or certainly the last 200 years  

nothing stays the same for long no and  in if you look at the history of humanity  

for thousands of years nothing changed each  generation just experienced the same thing  

you know growing crops eating them just the  same sort of church scenarios were there  

nothing really changed very much even from one  generation to the next but since the industrial  

revolution everything's changed in a faster and  faster pace so we see you know it's it's always  

difficult to appreciate that that for thousands  hundreds of thousands of years you wouldn't and  

each generation would have seen virtually not  very little change at all it doesn't sound  

very human society it doesn't it doesn't  sound very interesting imagine that no  

internet your lives when you were born probably  be much the same as they were when you died  

50 60 years later or 30 years later some  instances nothing would have changed okay  

but now everything changes all the time at a  faster and faster pace okay steve and uh just  

so it's always modern and then i think you've got  it's ten year periods now you have to look back at  

you know what when do things visibly change  you need a period of time to see that change  

there is a theory um there is a theory let me  just explain something steve there is a theory  

that it's every 10 years so we we often say now  that 10 years is when there is a big step forward  

so every 10 years there seems to be a big  leap or a big jump or a big leap forward  

in technology or the way we live or the  living standards maybe not everywhere  

maybe just in certain places so yes i think it's  fair to say and there are many ways of expressing  

the the present we we can say things that are  current current current events things happening  

right now we often describe them as current events  is that the same way that you would spell dried  

fruit no ah yes that's it there is an a so things  are current or the flow of electricity in a wire  

is that's about the same that's it yes the  movement movement the movement of something  

the movement of is it electrons i don't know  when it when electricity is flowing through a  

wire that's a current of flow yes so the flow  of something so we often just use use it to  

mean the flow so you can use the same thing with  water so water also has a current it just means  

the flow of something the flow flow of events  yes but if you are talking about dried fruit  

in chocolate nut chocolate i thought  you were talking about me then then  

that would be a currant a currant spelt the same  way currants are dried little dried fruits aren't  

they that you you you can put into chocolate  into cooking uh but it's spelt with an a currant  

and but it's pronounced current yes pronounced  the same way you're confusing me yes uh so yeah  

currents and raisins don't say current no that's  not how you spell it i don't know what that is  

yes no but but now i also want to  have because i've met can i also say

in a beautiful way modernity modernity i like that  one so that is describing what mr duncan the uh

it just means something that is around now  something that is modern something that i  

would also say maybe something that is trendy  something that is current something that is around  

now so something contemporary i suppose a lot of  people are talking about environmental issues so  

you might describe that as a contemporary subject  it is a subject that is being discussed right now  

in the present time by many people yes even  prince william who apparently has been hiding  

one of his houses he's got a third harris  that he won't tell anyone around about  

because he knew that it would make  him look like a complete hypocrite  

so they've discovered that he's got this  big house that he's not telling anyone about  

and it's you know runs off electricity  and uses all different types of energy

stop it just stop telling people what to  do if you are if you are doing something  

that goes against the thing you are preaching  sometimes it's best not to say anything  

you see contemporary yes that's a or  can you could have contemporary clothing  

clothing that is sort of modern and up-to-date  yes talking of which there it is up to date ah  

how did you do that steve i'm just clever yes well  the juror is out on that one yes what does float  

your boat mean it says indigo if something floats  your boat it means it gives you pleasure you enjoy  

doing it so the thing that floats your boat is the  thing that you enjoy doing and it can be anything  

whatever whatever you enjoy whatever you enjoy  doing in your private moments it can be anything  

well anything legal i suppose  i should say that it floats  

your boat something that you like doing so  whatever floats your boat enjoy it have fun  

something up to date is something that is that is  current it is now so we might think of things like  

computer software quite often you have to update  your software and afterwards we can say that your  

computer is up to date it means it is current it  does not need updating because it is already up  

to date euphonium says it's like temporary yes  yes contemporary yes temporary that's it that's  

a that's another one that people shorten so they  say temporary yes i i'm i'm not working full-time  

i just work temporary instead of temporarily or  temporary because it's more difficult to add that  

extra airy on the end it's lazy temporary it's  actually quite a difficult word to pronounce that  

um without going temporary or you  know without over pronouncing it  

it's difficult because it sort of fades away that  last syllable at the end you don't get temporary  

it's temporary and you sort of almost sort  of fade it out um yes exactly so uh here we  

go steve the latest the latest the latest latest  thing yes the latest news the latest fashion the  

latest celebrity gossip so i i like this i like  sometimes i like looking at words and seeing how  

they've been formed so when we think of something  late it means it normally comes towards the end  

so the latest thing is the thing that is the  most recent it is the most recent or it is at the  

end of the list of things that have been  developed or things that have come along  

so the latest anything the latest computer the  latest smartphone the latest trend on the internet

um danny has been very clever and says it could  be water that floats your boat yes very clever  

what if what if sailing is the thing you enjoy  if sailing is what you enjoy then it literally  

literally it floats your boat yeah that would  be yes that's uh nice to have some humour here's  

another one oh neo flowers here hello flower neo  this has nothing to do with the matrix even though  

there is a new movie coming out soon which i'm  already assured by various people that it is awful  

it is terrible neo we often use this as a prefix  to describe something that has replaced another  

thing so we often talk about neo conservatism  so neo basically means something that is new  

it is the latest thing so neo is often used as a  prefix before another word and basically it means  

new it is saying that something is new have you  got any examples of where you were what was that  

neo-conservatism yes neo-liberalism new so  it's just saying that this is the new style  

or the new way of doing it it is something  new that's come along neo neo expressionism

in art we often talk about neo things that are  new things that have come along things that  

have become trendy or fashionable  something that was around before

that has been updated in some way yes  so um yes so something was around before  

and then it's updated it's the same thing but  updated in some way you can put neo in front of it  

yeah a new form of something a new form of a  certain type of art or politics oh that's it  

then you can put neo and of course  in certain parts of europe they've  

been talking about neo-fascism  yes so that's it that has been  

a hot topic in certain parts of europe and  reinvention of something that happened in the past

neo baroque yes exactly so  somebody's reinvented something or  

tweaked if you tweak something it means  you make a small adjustments to it  

and then you relaunch it and put neo in say  neo something neo classic new form of classic  

something could be music or art neoliberal that's  it yes so you're keeping the basic principles or  

core of whatever it is but just sort of bringing  it up to date with a few new ideas maybe and

we can talk about the present day or of this  time so when we talk about the present day it  

doesn't have to be today we don't have to be  talking about this actual day but we can talk  

about the present day generally to mean things  that are around at the moment so present day  

present day so not necessarily this actual day but  generally in this period of time during this time  

the present day we are talking about things that  are occurring things that have come along to make  

differences or changes i suppose i think rotten  roses has invented a new word it's very clever  

let's have a look contemporary contemporary is  that a loathing for all things modern are you  

being clever there because there isn't such a  word as contemporary but contempt if you have  

contempt for something it means that you really  don't like it yes at all yes to it to express  

or hold hatred towards something contempt i have  a contempt for all things modern and loathing uh  

but there isn't that but i think you were just  being clever there contemporary uh unloading  

for all things modern very clever it's almost very  clever people on today mr duncan it's almost like  

a mixture of those two words do you have contempt  and also contemporary yes interesting very good  

i like that one yeah fascism yes there we go yeah  we've yes i think we've mentioned that one uh and  

the final word in this part we are looking at the  spirit of a certain time we often describe it as  

the zeitgeist oh i like that word that is a  very interesting word you might hear this used  

when people are reflecting on the  attitudes or the way of behaving  

during a certain period of time so you talk about  the zeitgeist of the 1920s or maybe the zeitgeist  

of the 1980s so we are talking about the spirit of  a certain time and it does come from from german  

so this is actually a german word which literally  means spirit of time so the spirit of the time the  

feeling so we might talk nowadays about the  modern zeitgeist well i suppose censorship  

would be one of the great descriptions or a good  description of this period of time that we're  

living in so you might describe the zeitgeist of  the 2020s as being maybe political correctness  

a rise in liberalism maybe or maybe also  the polarization between people who have  

conservative points of view and liberal  points of view anti-racist views have become  

have risen in ascendance have become  more important since the uh uh the um  

black lives matter movement death of lo of floyd  lloyd i've i've probably got that name wrong  

um but yes so what is the current feeling in  society about what about the way society should be  

and and you know it's a feeling of  of maybe current trends or current  

um what's the word i'm looking for mr duncan  how you feel about how society should be  

well attitudes attitudes that's right attitudes  in society that's it um about all sorts of things

your immune system a little boost every month or  so when you get these little infections so yes um

yes somebody i think it's impossible if you are  going to go back out into society then you are  

inevitably going to get these seasonal infections  especially if if you're like mr steve and you  

and you hang around people who have a very  poor standard of hygiene well it's not it's  

not so much that it's just that if they've  got a cold you're going to get it wiping  

their noses and sneezing and blowing their nose  into their hands and then touching you like this

mohammed has asked can you arrange a vocabulary  test session is that possible probably not  

uh because we'd have to be able to hear  

yes oh vocabulary that's different yes yes  so we could uh do you mean something like  

um well we did the sentence game and no one liked  it no they did they did like it was only only  

i think lots of people like the sentence  game i used to get complaints all the time  

we don't like the sentence game it smells  it's got a horrible smell but it would  

be nice to re introduce it from time to  time because that is a test of vocabulary  

you i can't even pronounce the word no no it's not  the only word you can't pronounce it's a dif again  

that's a difficult word to pronounce vocabulary  yes but that's another one with the a-r-y-a-r-a-y

even for british people that's difficult  vocabulary it's a difficult word to pronounce  

most people just say words but we could do  that we could reintroduce a type of sentence  

game where we suggest a word and then maybe  ask for other suggestions for synonyms words

and look for the answers that is the problem  nowadays i i i always wonder when people have  

quizzes or contests and they're asking questions  maybe general knowledge questions it's so easy  

nowadays to get the answers isn't it yes  that is true you don't have to use your  

brain anymore your brain is just a big empty clump  of clay because you don't need to use it anymore  

all you have to do is use your fingers to type  in an address on your on your keyboard and then  

you get the answer you see you don't even have  to use your brain i think that computers and  

all of this information that we can get  easily i think it's actually making us  

more dumb i think so i really think that  because we don't need to remember things anymore  

because we because we know we can just look  them up on the internet what do you think

he says it how he thinks okay no i'm not good  at multitasking that is correct i am not good  

at multitasking i have a person that is i don't  want to say it's it's i don't know if it's a man  

thing or not it's not a bad thing but i am well  i mean one thing i've learned from a recent uh  

uh we've had some training at work uh and  i mentioned this last week and it actually  

comes from the netherlands called the energy  project don't talk about this again no but one  

thing that comes out of that is that they told us  this trainer told us that multitasking is a myth  

uh and that the brain is not set up to  to multitask very well if you try to do  

lots of things at the same time then your  the amount of concentration on those things  

is half say you try to do two things then  those two things you will do them probably  

only half as well as you otherwise would have been  able to do them if you just focused on one thing  

the problem is with you steve you can't  even omnitask you can't even do it only

how much i've had to eat uh but yes you know what  one job one thing is getting steve to do one thing  

is hard never never mind two or three things  but i think i think you should be able to read  

or look at something and hear at the same time  i don't think that that is difficult to do and  

yes tomek you are right well no i don't yeah i am  very bad i've always been bad at multitasking but  

i can focus absolutely 100 on a one particular  task and i'm very good at that i'm very good at  

focusing on a task and concentrating on it and and  you know i think that's an important skill to have  

because if you want to do something really well  you have to focus on that one thing and if you  

try to do lots of things at the same time you  might get all those jobs done but none of them  

will be done as well as if you focused on one  task at a time and that's what they tell told  

us in the energy project just focus on one thing  get that done have a break and then focus on the  

next task do that well then take a break and then  do the next one that's what they say and in fact  

there's a there's something there's a little test  you can do to prove how bad multitasking is yes  

uh if you say you count from one to ten one  two three four five six seven eight nine ten  

and then you go a b c d e f g h i j k okay but  then if you try to put them by each other and and  

time the same task it takes you twice as long uh  but anyway that's i have no idea what that means  

uh yes it's difficult to explain it it really is  yes that's another thing you're not very good at

i think i do pretty well on these livestreams okay  steve i'm going to test you now i'm going to don't  

do that i'm going to give you a test wait there  i'm going to go away i'm going to bring something  

and then i want to see how well you can  multitask after that moment of time are you ready  

okay this is something i'm just we didn't  plan this i i i didn't plan this so wait

what is mr duncan planning he's are you planning  to humiliate me in front of literally millions  

of people who are watching mr duncan's live  stream uh or is it maybe 110. okay i'm going  

to give you some adversity so we're going to  see how well mr steve can multitask right now

oh my mr duncan i'll i know what you've  done mr duncan right this is some  

mail which we've had this is a this is a big post  post i should say this is a this is a big envelope  

that came yesterday and it's something that i  hid mr duncan does this every month because every  

month actually i subscribe to a car magazine yes  and it comes once a month and uh when this arrives  

everything else goes by the wayside so  what we mean by that is that i will stop  

everything work everything to read my car magazine  your concentration becomes zero absolutely laser  

focused if you concentrate on one thing very well  you say that you have you you're laser focused on  

something that's it uh so so what i did so this  is steve's car magazine that's just arrived and  

i was hiding it in my studio but now i'm going to  see if mr steve can can look at his car magazine  

and also concentrate on this at the same time  and already already i've noticed that he can't  

not another 9 11 road test oh dear oh god every  month it's the same this is the magazine that i  

get every month actually it's free i love the name  of that magazine that they've really used their  

imagination what should we what should we call  this magazine about cars this is what you would  

call uh this is like the this is a high-class  car magazine okay whatever that is i know  

it's there's no such thing car magazine thinks  that it it it's somehow doing something uh  

like the height of of journalism uh but in fact  all they ever do is test 911s every week no  

every month when you say 911s do you mean  the car the porsche 911 there's going to be  

about every month that's going to say some months  there's two in there yeah and it's very very steep  

steve well you've got me in the car magazine what  an interesting bugatti chiron interesting i always  

make a joke with steve every time he gets his  car magazine i say look look what what new is  

happening in the world of cars have they made the  wheels rounder have they made the steering wheel  

more more easy to grab hold of where  are we what's going on mr duncan so  

this is just proving my point this is  proving my point that mr steve cannot  

multitask he can't even single task  he can't even concentrate on one thing

button this is great hmm yeah okay seriously  quick car is it right well you see the thing  

with this magazine is it's all cars that i can't  afford to buy that's it it's it's sort of elitist  

it's all expense i mean they're testing the  bugatti chiron in here which is about one and  

a half million pounds but i mean who can afford  that it's a waste of time i i only actually like  

to look at that ugly ugly car you've got to be  joking you have got to be joking bmw you are  

really terribly showing things you have got to  be joking that is what steve is trying to show  

look at that ugly ugly car what is it i don't  know but there's no way i shall ever buy one  

not that i could afford it i don't know  what's happening what's happened to cars  

they seem to become more ugly well all these  suvs are just ugly anyway horrible bloated  

cars which represent all the excess in society  okay steve um i've anyway don't get me into that  

i feel as if i've sort of i've i've picked a  sore point raphael says and this is something  

you've said before have they made flying cars no  so until they do you know has anything progressed  

nothing is they still run run on the road  with with rubber tires by the way tires are  

possibly one of the worst polluting things on the  planet because when when when they've become worn  

you you take them off your car and then you  you can't do anything with them ah they do  

recycle tires mr duncan do they nowadays they  yes they chop them up and they turn them into  

i can't remember what to do with them now food i  think i know what they do steve they put them in  

ferrero rocher so ferrero rocher is actually made  from recycled tires now we know i think they use  

it i think they use it in uh they use it in  road construction they use it for something  

i can't remember what you can melt it down anyway  um and do something with it but no nothing nothing  

new has come along with cars hailer says  that women are better multitaskers than men  

well it's often said isn't it this is the sort  of the the zeitgeist you should you could say  

that the sort of spiritual feeling in societies  is that women are better at multitasking

and i think maybe because that is a product of  evolution uh in that women need to look after  

traditionally were the only people looking after  the children they'd have to do that and cooking  

and talking and communicating whereas  the men just went out and they were just  

hunting i mean that's very simplistic but um i  think that's a product maybe of just evolution  

or or maybe it's a product of of society i don't  know but uh um i prefer trucks says danny do you  

subscribe to a truck magazine and is it called  truck and multitasking is very uses a lot of  

energy a lot of brain power so if you're trying  to do lots of different things at once you're  

on the f you're trying to it becomes  you get tired i get tired very quickly  

um so i think you use a lot more of your brain is  is sort of because your brain uses a lot of energy  

and if you're having to do lots of different  tasks or trying to do lots of different tasks  

maybe you're trying to do the ironing and then  you're trying to cook the meal at the same time  

then doing something else i do  this and it makes you very tired

does me i wonder you know what i'm thinking  of capacity you know what i'm thinking now  

i'm wondering how claudia is getting  on with her souffle how is your souffle  

is it okay i know it takes a long time to make  a souffle but you have to be very careful don't  

open the door of your oven too quickly  or too soon or else it will sink yes

rotten roses makes a very good comment the people  who can afford those cars are probably not among  

the target audience of the magazine that is  correct that is just an aspirational magazine that  

is a magazine for people who can't afford those  cars to look on in envy yes you've never seen  

any magazines aimed at millionaires oh millionaire  monthly is out again no because i wonder what's in  

this month's issue of millionaire monthly what  frustrates me about suvs is that we have made  

technology has made huge strides in making  cars more efficient uh engines are much more  

efficient the miles per gallon that we get or on  the continent you don't use miles per gallon it's  

miles i it's it's uh miles per litter of fuel i  think this is a different way of expressing noah  

what is it no it's uh it's litters of fuel per  hundred kilometers is how it's measured i think  

on the continent whereas we say  miles per gallon or miles per litter  

it's expressed in a different way uh and so all  these advances that have been made to make cars  

more fuel efficient have been completely wiped  out by the by the rise of the suv which weighs  

more than the standard saloon car or hatchback  and so all those advances have been wiped out  

by people buying more suvs which of course have  been promoted by manufacturers for one reason and  

one reason only they make more money out of them  and in fact the the the small hatchback like the  

fiesta those types of cars are being gradually  uh the manufacturers are going to stop making  

them apparently because they don't make much money  out of it they want to make suvs because they can  

charge people more money for them anyway that's  me on my soapbox yes you got the car magazine  

you open that door mr duncan goodbye goodbye  to my viewers who've been leaving over the last  

minute and a half these cars run on liquid  arrogance yes nitram or nitram yes i agree

unfortunately we don't have time for our body  words and phrases really i'm never so sorry  

about that we've only got 10 minutes uh it's  about it's about half an hour the segment the  

the thing i want to talk about will take about  half an hour and to be honest my legs are tired  

i'm feeling very delicate still and look it's  going dark outside it's going dark already the sun  

has already set the sun has gone down and  now darkness is creeping across the land

so we've run out of time have we mr duncan so what  are we going to talk about for the next 10 minutes  

can you give us a flavour of what you were going  to talk about i was going to actually mention  

now that there will be a new lesson on tuesday  so now i have to do a little bit of housework  

that's what i call it when i have to get  all of my important messages out the way

when you are talking english how to improve  your confidence there is a lesson all about that

i was talking about christmas earlier no christmas  we are not ready for christmas can i just say  

neither neither mr steve nor myself are ready  for christmas i haven't i haven't even put my  

lovely christmas lights outside we don't have the  christmas tree in the house yet it's not there  

so we are not prepared at all but what about  you are you excited for the arrival of christmas  

which is only 20 days i still can't believe it's  only 20 days away well i mean i never do i refuse  

it's just my my my standpoint i refuse to think  about christmas or have anything to do with it  

until december um because i otherwise well well  one we know it's just a commercial exercise  

largely in the west uh it is just well in  many countries uh it's just an excuse for  

companies to promote their products to boost  the economy that's what christmas is it's all  

about buying things but don't forget we do  religion really we do need the economy we  

do need it so sometimes we do need people to  go out and buy things as long as they're not  

buying too many things or wasting things however  there are people who still observe christmas

yeah keep going there are people who still still  observe christmas from its religious point of view  

i mean yesterday we were in the church yesterday  we don't go to church ever the only time we go  

to church is if we are going to a wedding or a  funeral but but really nothing else nothing else  

at all so yesterday we were there and there were  people they they seemed as if they were having  

a good time and it would appear well we actually  sat in the church drinking coffee and eating cakes  

it was it was quite a strange feeling actually  for two reasons first of all we don't often go  

into church do we and the second reason is we were  drinking coffee and eating cakes and it was quite  

a strange feeling really but but we did enjoy it  and those cakes of course will have been made by  

members of the church i i know this because  well one i could tell they were homemade  

you've been complaining about them it  wasn't particularly nice i've got to say  

uh but but uh normally but yes what will  happen is that people who work in the church  

and work for the upkeep of the church lots  of women do this and they will bake the cakes  

and make the coffee and all that sort of thing

and it's just you know don't expect barista  quality coffee if you go to a church of england  

church it'll just be the cheapest coffee you can  find what about a catholic church is there coffee  

better well i don't know but you know they're not  going to have you know a big coffee maker i wonder  

if people are actually changing their religions  just because the coffee is better i used to be  

church of england but but the coffee is awful but  then i discovered catholicism and their coffee um

there you go you know if uh maybe they need  to compete with each other these different  

um uh parts of of religion they need to they  need to you know get upgrade themselves with  

better coffee machines and better cakes and  things like that here's a good word danny  

danny reloaded is it neo danny danny reloaded  uh you could say is that that danny that's come  

back or is it neo danny just a thought because we  mentioned the word neo earlier wants to talk about  

totalitarianism ooh hello totalitarianism hello  that is another difficult word to pronounce yeah  

um well the see that's a very current word to be  talking about in the world of sort of geopolitics  

okay isn't it why world politics because there is  this debate now around the rise of totalitarianism  

uh and uh we won't mention any countries but  there's this move away you know that there seems  

to be more countries now where uh democracy seems  to be fading away and totalitarianism seems to be  

on the rise and you know what's going to happen in  the future you're not actually explaining the word  

though oh it's well it's basically countries  that are run basically as dictatorships okay  

you know one person in charge would it be fair to  say that they are countries that have very little  

freedom or human rights or maybe quite often  or maybe maybe the laws are seen as draconian  

not seen as the opposite of that is democracy so  that they're probably not having a totalitarian  

state isn't going to have elections you  know you've got one leader in charge for a  

long period of time no chance to elect anybody  else you know you can think of a few countries

subject because it's seen you know there  is a there is a fight there is a big i mean  

underlying everything else that's going on  in the world there is essentially a battle  

in the world now of democracy against  totalitarianism okay which will win see  

democracy has sort of been the winning flavour  of how to run a country for many many decades now  

but totalitarianism is it on the  rise you know is it going to oust  

the way that we live uh you know i can answer that  question no well you don't know dude we don't know  

uh i mean yeah it's china against america  effectively isn't it and russia is in there  

as well yeah that's what it's all about would  you say that china is is has a totalitarian  

we would regard it as that yes see i always  think it's it depends on who you compare  

it with so maybe china has more freedom than  another country so i think sometimes it depends on  

which countries you you compare because a  country might have more rights but people might  

live in poverty north korea would be uh would  be the ultimate example of a totalitarian state  

well i i would say that that is i would  say that that is probably the the the only  

real state that has totalitarianism no but it's  generally seen that yeah that's what i mean it  

depends who you compare it with i know but there  are you know if you don't have what about iceland  

against indonesia various degrees aren't  there that's it but it is the difference  

between basically having an open democracy where  you have elections or where you don't uh and it's  

different i'm not we're not saying one's better  than the other um i mean obviously we favor one  

over the other but uh you know you've got to  it's just a different way of running a society  

it's a big debate it's a big debate but there  is this this this big sort of almost like a war  

going on between this fight around the world  between these two ways of running societies i  

don't think you've been watching too much news no  no yeah mr get get with her get with it mr duncan  

get with it um the problem is steve watches things  on the news sometimes and becomes very influenced  

by it and sometimes he changes his whole  attitude to things for about two or three days  

and then goes back to how he's generally regarded  that there is there is anyway you know big fighter  

this is this is this is not how i wanted to end  apparently you can get some beautiful tea some  

delicious tea at the local mosques as well yes so  so there's there is tea served at the mosques we  

have tea at the churches maybe the catholic church  is perhaps that you can have some nice tea uh oh  

also happy happy hanukkah as well it's hanukkah  at the moment is it yes so so that's going on  

as as we lead up towards christmas there are  other religious festivals taking place as well  

haven't we had diwali as well i think we've  had that recently as well um and uh but yes  

tea oh my nose is it she must have done good  i don't want to sneeze i don't want to sneeze  

i don't want you to sneeze i like  indian tea as well made with sort  

of cardamom and all different spices  and creamy milk oh that's lovely uh  

a catholic coffee has holy water says rotten roses  yes i like that that's pretty that's actually  

quite funny very well done maybe that improves  the taste yes thank you thank you for that  

clever comments and we've had today i just hope  the cup that you are drinking from is not holy  

because it will run out the bottom anyway we're  going now steve yes interesting point uh danny uh  

you know you you can talk about uh democracy but  is that is it i mean do we actually really have a  

democracy there's another debate there well i m my  point is always we live in this country you and i  

in the united kingdom in i suppose england is is  our country the place we live but people complain  

about the government and say that they are they  are too strict with their laws and things like  

that but it but you would say that this is a  pretty democratic free and open country and yet  

people still complain about this country and say  that we are living in a totalitarian state i don't  

think anyone says that about the uk sorry having  what not a totalitarian state populism yes okay

steve obviously never uses twitter it's clear  that steve never goes on twitter yes that's where  

everyone goes now yes but i mean you know there's  degrees of everything and it's always difficult to  

to be able to see the true perspective when you've  grown up in a particular society you tend to think  

that that is the normal way of living but there  are many other ways that societies can be run  

yes and it's you know got to take yourself outside  anyway experience we had a lovely time yesterday  

we are getting excited about christmas even though  i'm not we are not prepared at all wait we have  

nothing planned yet yet we've got nothing arranged  nothing planned no christmas lights no christmas  

tree no gifts nothing so we have 20 days to sort  all of that out anyway we're going now steve we've  

got to go steve we've got to go i'd love to carry  on this this very fascinating debate on uh start  

debating society are we debating uh well it would  be it would be fascinating to uh but we are very  

open to uh many ideas and and lots of different  ways of thinking about things in the world and  

people so we're very open people aren't we when  it comes to ideas and concepts yes you can have  

an open mind but not not to the point where your  brain falls out no open-minded that's how we are  

uh able to listen to other people's points of view  yes listening because steve is such a good steve  

is such a good listener he listens to everything  that i say when we're on the live stream lovely um  

it's four minutes past four yes well i keep saying  we've got to go we've got no tea cakes because we  

didn't go there yesterday so anyway they were  horrible they weren't very nice they were dry  

they had far too much dried fruit in  and you don't like lots of dried fruits  

but the whole thing was stale  it was stale that was stale  

the new bakery in which wenlock is not the  quality is not as good as the previous i'm sorry  

new bakery new bakery in much wenlock you have  to sort your ideas and improve your your bread  

if it's not better than what you can get in a  supermarket then why would i go there anyway let's  

go lovely to be here lovely to see you all to have  conversations and debate all sorts of different  

things and ideas and uh hope you all have a  lovely week and i look forward to seeing you again
