can you see where I am today? I'm at a place called Ludlow castle which is in

Shropshire quite a few miles away from my home town very far away from Much

Wenlock we will be seeing more of this a little bit later on of course you are

are you okay I hope so are you happy well are you happy I really really hope

so we are all together back again did you

miss me last week I missed you mr. Steve's mum was here last week stopping

with us for a few days to have a little bit of rest and relaxation and now we

are back here as usual on a Sunday so can I say a big thank you to all those

who wrote to me saying we miss you mr. Duncan sunday is not the same without

you on YouTube so I do apologize for that but we are back to normal today yes

we're all here together once again however last Sunday there was a new full

English lesson did you see it last week and I have some good news there will be

a new full English lesson next week as well so I will start over the next few

weeks posting new full English lessons I have had a lot of requests for me to

start making them again so I thought yeah why not let's have a look outside

shall we because today is rather nice let's have a look outside the Sun has

just broken through the clouds it was a bit cloudy earlier but right now outside

the window there it is a live view outside you can see that it's looking

rather bright and very colourful as well we will be taking a closer look at those

plants and hours in my next full English lesson

that's all I'm saying for now I don't want to give everything away I don't

want to tell you everything that is going on so now we know who I am and now

we know why we are here yes of course we are here to improve our English that is

true yes that's the reason why we are here today so I hope you are feeling

good of course I can't do the livestream without you on the live chat so can I

here on YouTube isn't it lovely oh my goodness I must admit when I first came

into the studio this morning I couldn't remember what to do it's it's very

strange maybe it's my age but for a moment or two I couldn't actually

remember what to do and and there I was with my fingers poised to press the

buttons and then suddenly I couldn't remember which buttons to press isn't it

strange so there you go let's have a look at the live chat because of course

public holiday so here in the UK many people are enjoying a lovely long

weekend we are relaxing not for two days but for three days so there isn't

me during the week on Tuesday night I did a very long livestream and I have

posted an edited version of the live stream on my youtube channel so we had

quite a lot of fun watching the birds and listening to them and looking at the

lovely nature all around us on Tuesday evening as the Sun set and it might be

one of the longest live streams I've done at around about 3 hours and 40

minutes I was on 4 but you can see the edited highlight of that as I sit on the

sofa talking to you just before going to bed and that is now available on my

haven't done it before certainly not in this particular form

even though we did have a super-duper brand-new full english lesson last week

as well so yes there you go yes and there's another one coming next

week as well oh I am spoiling you today we're talking about lots of things

including what in your opinion is the difference between having an opinion and

fact because it would appear that these days opinion in fact have kind of been

combined to mean the same thing so just because someone thinks something

or expresses something other people misunderstand it and think that it's

true or real and why is this so also yes I suppose I can't do a livestream

without talking about this particular subject because this week the Prime

Minister of the UK said goodbye and today as a way of commemorating this we

are going to have a feature called crying tears and idioms and phrases so

phrases idioms connected with the subject of crying and tears and there

there is tourism a crying outside number 10 Downing Street as she says goodbye to

the country but don't worry Teresa because guess what you can spend the

next 10 maybe 15 years traveling the world and making millions and millions

of pounds giving speeches so it so it isn't all over so don't worry about it

Teresa there's even money more money to be made

so that's what we're talking about later on crying tears the idioms and phrases

connected to it and mr. Steve will be joining us for that also another thing

to mention did you see on the news this week something very

dramatic happened in France someone decided to climb up the side of the

Eiffel Tower virtually to the top now I don't know

about you but I don't like Heights I suffer quite badly from vertigo

do you have vertigo vertigo is a common problem that affects many people and it

simply means that you are afraid of heights and if you are very high up

looking now you will feel very dizzy and sick so that's what happened this week

in France now of course here it is the famous landmark in France the Eiffel

Tower a very beautiful place and mr. Steve and myself we actually visited

this place three weeks ago we were in Paris but here is something that I want

to show you now something slightly different now this looks like Paris but

in fact it isn't so do you know where this is so this is a certain place in

the world it looks like Paris but it isn't so

there is the real Eiffel Tower and there is what looks like the Eiffel Tower in

fact it looks very Parisian but it isn't but where is it it is somewhere else in

the world I will give you the answer later on also for those thinking of

going up the the mountain called Everest you might not want to now there have

been some terrible stories coming from this place this week but apparently if

you go there now there are over 300 people climbing at the side of Mount

Everest at the moment it's got pretty crowded up there to say the least

so that is another news story that a lot of people were talking about so

apparently if you go to Mount Everest at the moment and why would you because it

looks like a very dangerous thing to do I wouldn't do it personally because I'm

let's face it I'm a bit of a coward so I wouldn't do it but apparently the

situation is such that there are too many people trying to climb up the side

of Mount Everest and there are so many people now that it's become very crowded

and in some cases very dangerous as well so there is something that people have

been talking about this week amongst other subjects as well we went

to a lovely place last week because mr. Steve's mum was staying here with us

so we decided to visit somewhere very lovely and I will show you a few video

clips later on also I will give you some information about the place we visited

all I will say for now is that it was a very old place it was a castle we went

to visit a castle last week with mr. Steve's mum so we will have a look at

that a little bit later on a quick look at the live chat before we go to

something else the live chat is very busy now thank you very much it's lovely

mount everest is becoming very polluted i would agree with you there

definitely oh my goodness I can't believe that I see photos which photos

are you talking about Ryan says I love you mr. Duncan you are doing a great

work you are doing a great job by streaming and talking to us to develop

our English well the reason why I do that isn't is not just about English

it's also about improving your listening skills as well so yes can you believe

300 people were climbing Mount Everest at the same time I can't believe it

either Valentin says hi everybody maybe the

prices will go up in a few days yes apparently it is quite expensive if you

want to have someone to guide you to the top of Mount Everest it is very

expensive and also because so many people want to do it it is also very

crowded as well mr. Steve is going to be with us soon but first I thought we

would have a look at an excerpt from one of my full English lessons because there

will be a brand-new I'm not joking there will be a brand-new full English lesson

next week so I thought we would have an excerpt from one of my earlier ones and

can you see what I'm pushing here it's a very useful piece of God and apparatus a

handy thing to have about when you have large loads and heavy objects to move

around this is a wheelbarrow you will often see builders and gardeners pushing

one of these around you can transport heavy and cumbersome things safely in a

wheelbarrow you can put garden debris such as dead

leaves and pulled up weeds into a wheelbarrow so they can be taken away

and disposed of more conveniently on building sites you will often see

wheelbarrows used for moving heavy material such as cement or bricks from

one place to another a wheelbarrow typically has one central wheel which

can either be air filled or solid this particular wheelbarrow has been designed

to be lightweight while at the same time robust and sturdy this is what makes the

wheelbarrow an essential tool for making those heavy duty jobs much easier to

carry out but be careful not to overfill it or it might tip over leaving you with

an even bigger mess to clear up

here's a word that seems to be pronounced one way but is in fact

pronounced another the word is cumulative the first syllable this word

sounds like the letter Q the word cumulative is an adjective and means

increasing or increased in quantity degree or force by successive editions

for example the addition of other things over time creates a cumulative effect we

often talk about a cumulative effect when discussing health issues the damage

caused to the human body by years of poor diet and neglect can be described

as being cumulative we often talk about the cumulative effect on the environment

caused by steady ecological neglect a cumulative effect normally occurs over a

period of time sometimes over many years the process of accumulation is

cumulative accumulating growing progressive accruing snowballing

mounting poor health in middle-age is seen as being caused by cumulative

neglect we can also use the word accumulative in this way to whenever we

talk about something being subjective what are we actually saying well the

word subjective is often used when discussing opinions and points of view

we often refer to the subjective nature of something the word subjective relates

to each individual's view or perception of something that can be translated in

many ways a good example of this occurs when talking about art a painting or

drawing of something might be interpreted in many ways when we look at

a piece of we often try to work out what its

meaning is what is the artist trying to convey what are they expressing of

course one person's interpretation might differ from others there might be many

ways of looking at this particular piece of artwork so in this case we can say

that the views are all subjective each view expressed is a personal point of

view so any opinion expressed concerning a topic or issue can be described as

being subjective it is an individual point of view it is a personal opinion

it is open for debate it is subjective thank you for watching me teaching you

lessons and there will be another one a brand new one coming next week

ladies and gentlemen put your hands together because it is the one the only

it is definitely mr. Steve you've been making lessons I've been entertaining my

mother well we both have you've done a very good job and mother's gone back the

studio is now returned to being a studio from being a bedroom for my mother and

all has returned to normal and so here I am mr. Duncan it's great to see you look

very colorful today you've got a kind of it looks blue but on the camera it

doesn't look blue it looks gray isn't that straight gray I don't look gray mr.

Duncan oh I didn't say you I said what you were wearing all right

I don't know the technology is up to you mr. Duncan

I just appear and you have to sort out all the technology and make me look

beautiful I thought you deliberately make miracoli

yeah but the problem is though I never know what you're going to wear now you

have to be prepared for all eventualities yeah I don't know what

that means by the way you told me never to wear green so I don't wear green

that's good but blue I suppose is quite close to green so it might be

interfering with your camera it's very stress it's very strange isn't it I

don't know oh you mean yes I can see myself now on the monitor no colour

I've got no colour mr. Duncan yeah I'm in a black and white world it's like I'm

a dog or a cow that can't see any colour yes

so you suck amaura so at the moment at the moment we are actually seeing things

as as a cow or an animal that has no sense or even a dog because apparently

dogs are colorblind as well I didn't know that but apparently they are and so

are Bulls so if you there's this myth about holding up a red

flag or wearing a red jumper will make you more susceptible to being to being

hunted down by a bull and chased by a bull is is a myth yes it's not it's not

real so you've got a you've got the rest of this lesson to try and make you look

colorful yeah because this is blue not gray this is this is blue this bit here

very strange very strange is actually well you have changed the camera I've

got a much smaller camera now mr. Duncan's but beyond he's downgraded me

you know that smaller camera yeah you know that doesn't make any difference

because cameras now you can have a camera in your button so you can have

cameras that are so small you can't even see them so where so don't don't judge

cameras by their size because that's that size East well I can say is I've

got no colour mr. Duncan you're in full glorious colour you can see the red

white and blue of your tie yes and what about my eyes my eye my I've got blue

eyes you see are they being seen by the viewers yes this is all very

uninteresting by the way does anyone care about this I'm thinking not we had

a busy week last week though didn't we we did indeed yes my mother came to stay

and we had a lovely time we went to visit some lovely places we took her to

see the sights of Shropshire and we had to we struggled a bit to think where

could we take my mother somewhere different because isn't that the problem

you have when people come to visit and they've come quite a few times you when

they first come and they don't know the area you've got all you've got several

places you know you can take them oh that's a nice scenic area or there's a

nice walk there or a nice building or an old ancient monument you can take people

to see but eventually you run out of places that they've been to so you want

to always impress your visitors with somewhere new to take them so we

struggled a bit but we came up with the lovely town of Ludlow and we had a

lovely time because we hadn't been there it's the sort of de facto capital of

Shropshire and well it sort of Lee everyone said

it's not really a name a capital but I suppose Ludlow

well Shrewsbury is probably the capital but Ludlow is seen as the sort of

gastronomical sort of center the hub of hub of activity in Shropshire well it is

the largest town in the south of Shropshire yes and it's supposed to be a

bit posh and there's lots of posh restaurant it's supposed to be one of

the best places to eat in the UK can I tell you a story so we took your mum to

see this lovely castle we are going to see that by the way in a few minutes the

castle that we visited but the first thing I noticed in Ludlow is there are a

lot of elderly people living there everyone seemed to be driving around in

those little disabled buggies or as they call they call them in the United States

they call them Rascals a bit dangerous we run over by them on that on the

pavement and a lot of people were walking around with sticks and a lot of

elderly people I noticed that we went for this lovely meal didn't wait a

lovely place but I'm not gonna say where for reasons that will become obvious

soon but we went for a lovely meal and you you had a nice meal here mum had a

nice meal I had something with a little Italian touch

I had spaghetti bolognaise but later on after we returned home I felt unwell you

two were okay weren't you yes but I I wasn't feeling too well and at the end

because I had to hide the fact that I was feeling unwell because I didn't want

to make your mum worried because because sometimes your mum worries about us a

lot so I didn't want to make your your mum worried or concerned so I knew I was

going to be sick I knew I was going to throw up something weird was going on in

my stomach so instead of making a noise in the house I actually went outside

into the garden I went into the corner of the garden and I decided to vomit

there so I was throwing my guts up I was vomiting a lot in the garden I won't

tell you where but I didn't even know this was going on

no one knew because I was trying levers I was trying to hide it from you yes I

think you'd had spaghetti bolognaise and it was it was very oily hmm and I think

you reacted to the excess of oil yeah the excess of oil yes yes they put

a lot of olive oil in I remember whilst eating it I was thinking they've put too

much olive oil in this it was like it was like eating an oil slick but of

course later on I realized that there was definitely too much olive oil

because I was vomiting in the garden and I did it in secret so mr. Steve mum

wouldn't worry about me so I was suffering on my own in the corner of the

garden you know next time you're suffering apply that same method and go

outside so I can't see when you're suffering fortunately I don't suffer

very often yes I had a calzone I think it must have been an Italian restaurant

because mother had pasta yeah Oh mum keep saying mother I never called him

mother that sounds at that if he's called your your your your mum mother it

usually is is a slightly not aggressive tone but you're sort of almost

disapproving tone yeah mother I should say mum or mama not mummy I'm not a

child anymore yes yes ma mad pastor and I had a calzone mmm it was spectacular

yes sort of a big pastry sort of thing with with with with a nice vegetable e

goats cheese filling audacious this is this is interesting

but the the really interesting part was I actually paid for the meal and

ironically I was the one that ended up being sick that was the really shocking

bit you offered to pay for the meal mr. Duncan that's a bit sarcastic Steve are

you starting to pick on me today I know

fell off my seat cuz you know it's probably not a good thing to do pick on

me so we had a very nice of you to do so we had a lovely time with your mum and

now we're going to have a look at our little tour around the castle actually

first of all shall we have a look at the live chat go on because everyone has

been missing you I don't believe it mwah for two weeks you we haven't been

here because your mum was staying so let's have a look shall we at the live

today that's no good is it oh actually I had a bit of a headache didn't I yeah I

could say that or you could you could actually imply that I'm happy because

she's gone Oh that's not true that is not true just in

case mums watching all I can say is I hope your mum isn't watching at the

to Steve's mum and and yes it was lovely having you here we had a super-duper

so here is a short video and this is something showing where we went last

week with mr. Steve's mum a very interesting place an old castle can you

believe it a very old castle all I have to do is find it there it is so here it

is a short video it's only three minutes long don't worry it won't be an hour or

two hours it's just three minutes and 26 seconds with our tour around a very

special place

and there it was the place we visited last week with mr. Steve's mum

ten minutes away from three o'clock here in the UK it's a Sunday afternoon I

don't know what time it is where you are but look look at the view outside isn't

that lovely look there is the view right now you can see lots of colour it's a

very windy day by the way very blustery the Sun keeps trying to come through the

clouds but it's it isn't being very successful to be honest and it's a long

weekend which makes mr. Steve very happy because it means that he gets to have an

extra day off so Steve feeling very happy about that you're pretty happy

about that aren't you Steve I am indeed I get an extra day's holiday very cool

because we've had a lot of bank holidays very close together this year because

Easter was very late so every other week we've been getting the Monday's off

because of just general bank holidays it's an incredible to think that that

castles that you know over a thousand years old or nearly a thousand years old

it's absolutely incredible that they were building structures like that it

must have looked amazing when it was first built yeah well as I wrote in the

video it was actually one of the first stone castles ever to be built and also

it's still even now it's considered is one of the finest castles in the country

and those stairs were very dose spiral staircases were very dangerous in fact

there were several points when when we could walk up the spiral staircases to

the high points in the castle there wasn't a lot to stop you just falling

over the edge but a bit dangerous in places but we had a lovely time there

and the weather stayed very nice which is always a bonus

yes needless to say we didn't take your mother up the stairs

we didn't so even even we had difficulty climbing up and down them people were

climbing up and down those stairs soldiers with bows and arrows

you know nearly a thousand years ago would have been climbing up those steps

to protect the city against invaders you know haka and we were actually

walking up and down on the top of those some of those towers where soldiers

would have been with as I say with bows and arrows watching over the rivers it

would have all been just forests everywhere and you know waiting for

invaders to come and to try and get over it's quite incredible to think that we

were walking on the same stones and up the same staircases as people were

walking you know nine hundred thousand years ago yes nine hundred thousand

years ago that's very old yes I think you mean a thousand years old I do well

it was used for 700 years so for seven hundred years it was in use in some form

or other and there were a lot of notable guests including that the two princes

have you heard of the two princes that were murdered in the Tower of London no

apparently they were evacuated and they they were actually staying at Ludlow

castle for a short time before they were sent back to London where they met their

rather grisly fate we were we were all right mr. Duncan they didn't I didn't

capture us and do anything nasty to us no although we did we did get to sample

the biggest cup of coffee I've ever drink that's true we asked for a mug of

coffee and well it was nearly a pint of coffee

I've never drink so much coffee in one go we were high as kites on the caffeine

we were walking around at low castle like we were on some kind of drug yes

well which which we basically were because caffeine is a drug so if you

want to sample the largest cup of coffee ever go to a little low castle because I

was I was literally flying around afterwards I was hovering above the

ground because I had drank so much coffee and I'm not used to it you see

anything on the live-chat Palmyra says that

she saw a news report hmm and pal Mira where does Palmyra live I can't remember

but it's not in this country and she saw a news report about Shropshire sheep I'm

a news report we're saying that they're very peculiar sheep because they eat the

weeds that's true rather than the grass well we haven't heard this news reports

that would be very interested to to see that and my just boys pal Mira I can't

remember now well I I can't remember either

but the fact thanks for saying it three times I don't know sir how many

reminders where you live we can't remember do apologize yes Mira says that

it looks very creepy it does it was a bit creepy and there were lots of very

deep sort of underground storage areas the cellars and things like that and it

was it was fascinating and we had a lovely meal afterwards whether you know

you know what was underneath they were there were there was a big dungeon

really yes that there was there was part of it that is actually underground so I

know that you can go into it anymore but there was a large area that was

underground and part of that was where they kept some of the prisoners there

worth spending ten minutes so sorting out the the tablet device for

Lois and no my mother didn't go up the steep steps there must have been more

must have been about four to your 60 steps up to the top I mean

it's a great testament to the way the the way that building was constructed

that those steps are still there I was looking at them quite carefully to try

and work out how they built those spiral staircases

it's fascinating they were doing all that you know hundreds and hundreds of

years ago well a thousand years ago that's right yeah it's amazing at least

you couldn't build a structure like that anymore it would cost far too much we've

had this conversation before yes it's like not read am trying to reconstruct

that if that had completely collapsed there's no way it could ever have been

rebuilt because it would have discussed a prohibitive amount of money well you

know what they want to do now they want to turn not true Dam Cathedral into it

into a big eco Church what's that well they're going to put a giant glass roof

on the top and grow plants in all sorts of fauna and flora inside can you

believe that that'll be no doubt a lot cheaper than because it will all be

about money but that's what a sad thing to have to replace that that amazing

roof structure yeah with a glass dome you know it always amazes me you you

because your mother goes to church sometimes and I always have collections

don't know they always collect some money at the end of the service don't

they they do and and it's always fascinated me how how that they've never

come across a better way of raising money now I've always wondered why

churches don't have people sponsoring them so maybe you could have an

advertising board outside the church and you could charge people to advertise on

the board outside or you could have a big screen like like in Times Square you

could have a big screen honest on the top of the steeple and you could

advertise products you could advertise soft drinks or maybe motor cars you

could advertise all sorts of things and make revenue from that so I've always

wondered white churches and at any place that

needs funds on a regular basis why they don't have sponsorships you could you

could actually go into the church and you could have sponsored sermons so that

so the the priest or the vicar will stand up and say dearly beloved today's

your nose I don't think people would like that in a church and now let us

pray I don't think they would I don't they want inappropriate advertising but

it but it does seem like a thing that it might happen eventually because not many

people go to church anymore in this country and one of the things that they

big sign on the side of the church or maybe have some sponsorship inside maybe

on the back of the vicar you could have a lot like they have within football

teams you could have sponsorship and then you would raise loads of money then

lots and lots of money I think so don't think that's gonna work mr. Duncan okay

well I thought of it first if anyone starts doing that it was me

today mr. Duncan we we are talking about one thing in particular because this

week here in the UK yes I suppose we can't get through one of our live

streams without talking about brexit and politics because this week there she is

there's Theresa May outside the houses of well number 10 Downing Street crying

there she is getting very emotional so today we're talking about crying crying

and years idioms and phrases so all those

things do you like that says she's really getting upset there I don't know

why she's getting upset because as soon as she stops being the Prime Minister

she can go around the world and give speeches to all these big companies and

make millions and millions and millions of pounds so I don't know why she's

getting so sad there well I don't know whether she could do that she certainly

is a lady of principle of course she'll do it what I'd like to know is what do

you see for us you and I watching that hmm that's our prime minister okay

she's been broadcast around the world and she starts to cry at the end of a

speech I don't know if I've ever seen that before I've never seen I've never

seen a world leader cry so what do has anybody else seen that this is the first

time you're seeing it as if so or if you saw it on your news at home okay what

impression did you have of the UK seeing our prime minister resigning and then

crying at the end well maybe some people might feel sympathy but but I thought it

was rather undignified because she got through it but at the very last moment

at the very last moment those last words she said I believe in Britain and now

I'm going to cry and everyone around the world will see it so if she could have

only held held that back for a few more seconds it would have been a very

different situation so crying crying in public now you know I have a big

complaint don't you Steve against you know I have a big complaint okay about

people who cry openly all the time especially on television it really

annoys me so it we do appear to live in an age where people are willing to cry

openly often quite often in public or just to get up

set over nothing so maybe they I don't know they maybe they're they're having a

lovely ice-cream in the park and then they drop the ice-cream on the floor and

then they get really upset about it and start well of course when we grew up mr.

Duncan was and certainly the image people have of British people is the

stiff upper lip that no matter what happens no matter what emotion is is is

inside you must not ever let it show in public that's the the stoic sort of

stiff upper lip British way that we tend to behave or have done but that of

course that's really gone now I don't think that exists anymore but certainly

when we grew up and just after the war and our parents it was always the stiff

upper lip yeah no you never showed your feelings or emotions in public British

people were always renowned for that whereas other continental countries

they're more what other countries are more willing or or less embarrassed to

show their feelings when you know you've got to hold it all in with British

people you must never let it out that's it to be stoic yes stoic is that right

stoic yes a review to be to be brave and and not to show any emotions and to bear

up to the weight of emotion that that that's inside you that's that you keep

it in you keep it all in you don't let it out yes I'm not I'm not saying don't

misunderstand me I'm not saying you shouldn't cry but there are moments

where where it's good to cry about something something sad happens I'm not

saying you shouldn't cry but just for those few more moments if only if only

she'd just held it back she could have gone into number 10 and cried and cried

and weeped on the floor and kicked her shoes off and really had a good cry but

but known because what happens is everyone now will remember that moment

they will remember the moment when tourism a stood outside she resigned and

pride that's it how mayor is saying that we're being very unfair bullying Theresa

no well we're not saying what we want to know is what do you think hmm you know

if for example your Prime Minister made a speech and burst into tears you know

would you be embarrassed about that for your country how would you feel hmm what

impression is it giving you yes of the state of our country to yes makes a very

good point suit TR says you must not show your emotions in public especially

if you are a public figure it shows your weakness yes especially if you are a

leader can you can you imagine what would happen if if if I don't know if

Barack Obama started crying uncontrollably now I know what you're

going to say you're going to say when Roberta Flack was it Roberta know Aretha

Franklin Aretha Franklin was performing in front of a Barack Obama he started

crying he he left out a little tear but he wasn't crying uncontrollably or

sobbing that's a great word we're going to talk about that later on twisty we're

going to look at words connected with tears and crying as well because it's we

don't just throw this together sometimes we we plan some of this live

stream even though it doesn't look like it

Anna says have we voted for the UK Parliament yet yes we have it was on

Thursday and we both went down and and expressed ourselves in a democratic way

and voted and what the result abhi we don't know and in fact Maria is going

off to vote now oh I see Maria Giovanna la Rosa is going to vote for the

European Parliament so so they must be having their their voting today we had

ours on Thursday I think it's sort of different countries are having it at

different times it's very controversial of course us voting in the European

because we were supposed to be out of the European Union or these elections

took place this is crazy not that we want you we are remain as we wanted to

stay yes okay in the European Union but yes yes but but yes well not we're not

talking about our point of view we're talking about the general situation I

won't well that's it the general situation a general situation is that

now we have to vote for for something that apparently over half the country

doesn't want to be a part of so we have to vote for something that we don't

actually want and and that's how crazy things have got and now we have until

the 31st of October don't we Steve we do - want me to wait for the final brexit

or to see if we get yet another extension yes

interestingly enough somebody's asked Palmeiras said do we want who do we want

to be the next prime minister well we have to be careful there because it's

all ongoing so we're not going to give our opinions on that because it's not

right to do so but yes I suppose I suppose that there are a lot of

differing opinions at the moment and this is something I wanted to talk about

today as well Steve when does an opinion become a fact and can they be the same

thing because we do seem these days because of the Internet and and the way

that people communicate nowadays Steve it would appear that sometimes opinion

in fact become confused and the same thing so just because a person thinks

something or considers something in a certain way it's then interpreted as

being something that's actually true or real and I think this is partly due to

the fact that you have maybe social media sites like Twitter where people

say things or they repeat things and then another person repeats what someone

else is said as an opinion and then eventually it becomes almost fact like

even though it isn't a fact so a fact in its roar a sense is just

something that can be proved a thing that is definite and can be proved but

on the internet you might find that people just type or say or write

anything whether it's true or not so so that is the strange conflict we have now

and certainly this has has crept into politics don't you think well yes

because politicians of cause knowing that people are very lazy now and

they've all got busy lives and probably can't be bothered to go and check our

farm or liable to come out with lies and mistruths

in order to to prop up their their arguments on the political stage and you

know that there are many politicians around today is one in particular who is

accused constantly of not telling the truth of just making up facts and

constantly lying but because I think most people haven't got the time or the

inclination to check what that person is saying they just accept it as fact and

it's very easy to distort the truth because it depends on on somebody

actually checking it for themselves and then everybody somebody tells that if a

politician tells a lie about something twenty thirty years ago they would have

been instantly dismissed from their position mmm but now politician can lie

about something and just apologize and and and just they just get on with it

they just move on with their jobs or they might have done something seriously

they come back five years later as well as forgiving this happens a lot though

in in British politics there are there are many MPs in various places and and

who have served in various positions who've been who've been sacked or

they've had to resign but later they come back and carry on doing another job

in another Department and this has happened certainly in this country over

the past few years are not saying who or where but there is of course the old

joke about how can you tell when a politician is lying and the answer is

their mouth is moving so a lot of people do take what politicians say with what

they call a pinch of salt they tend not to trust what they're being told the

problem is if you are a politician when you think of members of a cabinet or MPs

a lot of them have got into that job in the first place because they want the

power and particularly if you've got people who are now we've got a

leadership election all these but how can you trust any of these people at all

they just want to be leaders and there's one or two in particular and one person

in particular named Rose who who is being accused of just constantly lying

all the time in order to strengthen his position because all he's concerned

about or she is getting into power and some people would say or do anything to

get into power and as you say some you have to assume that politicians are

always lying because I think thou thou or at least distorting the truth to try

and prop up their arguments yes but we don't we don't talk about specific

people but around the world of course there have been many elections taking

place we had the indian election so in India there was an election and

president mozi has got back in so he's actually back in with with a huge

majority so he has a lot of support in India also Indonesia as well there was

election there and there were some some protests as well taking place there and

now here in the UK but the strange thing is here Steve what we are not voting for

a new leader of country it is just an internal thing

within the party that is actually in power so that's a that's a very strange

situation where whoever takes over from Teresa may will actually not be elected

by by the country so that's that's rather unusual isn't it yeah they'll

just be elected by by the party members and I think the politicians have a say

ever ever saying it as well in terms of who they might who they might support

but yes that they won't be tested until the next general election yes as to

whether but we're in a very dangerous situation at the moment because

depending on who gets into power could have a profound effect on our

relationship with Europe I mean if we get somebody who is prepared to is

prepared to say to the European Union unless we get a change of deal we're

going to crash out yes and it's going to have very serious consequences and I

just don't trust any other politician to be quite honest with you because they

all lied and distorted the facts before the the the brexit referendum anyway and

nobody actually knows whether we'll be better off in Europe or not or out of

Europe or not nobody really knows you could be impossible to predict

I say it's incredibly selfish to pull out of the European Union on the basis

that we one country might be slightly better off in the future because of the

huge risks that poses to to safety and everything that the whole risk of the

breakup the of the European what what you mean safety I don't understand what

you mean well I think we're I think we're definitely I shouldn't got to be

careful what I say because I'm not supposed to give my political views but

you kind of have yes but I mean there the whole argument of the people wanting

to leave Europe is that they don't want us to be controlled by what they see as

unelected leaders in Europe but I mean my argument would be that really we

don't have much say it in what we do anyway because even if you vote a

political party into power then you they have a manifesto which they can easily

break and a lot of people have already commented that much of the rules and

regulations that have been applied to Europe that we now follow we would have

done ourselves anybody there's nothing that probably there's nothing that

that's that much different then we wouldn't do ourselves anyway no so I

don't think that argument really holds up and I can't see what bad has come out

of it anyway and yet the only other argument is to

say that we're going to be somehow richer and better off as a country

because we'll be able to do our own deals with all these different countries

but I think that's incredibly selfish all right well look well which which see

I don't even know what the different countries are I mean the countries that

we'll be trying to deal with are probably the same countries that we're

dealing with now yes but we've already set up an agreement through the European

Union so why they're going to want to set up separate ones with us and how

long it's going to take who knows it's a huge risk which is why we wanted to stay

in because nobody knows life's quite good we've had quite a good life in the

European Union in the last 40 years I can't see any reason to change it and

the European Union is the most successful collaboration of countries

that's ever existed on the planet hmm 500 million people not that there have

been many of them yes that's the other problem I mean it's only that well when

you think about I want to I want to say the Soviet Union so that might be and of

course the United States so maybe maybe Europe is the third one to do it so it's

the largest collaboration of countries in human history oh yes by I'm saying

how many million people plus I've got it I've got working together with a common

agreements free-trade people you know anyway that we've said enough

that's my that's my little Mon little today I wouldn't say I wouldn't describe

that as a little moan but yeah yes it's it's a long it's a long thing it's a big

thing to change I suppose many people would say it's 40

years of things that have happened and things that have been established that

have now got to be taken apart if and it's a big if if it happens that's the

one so stay tuned as the saga of whether or not the UK leaves the European Union

are not continues we will find out at the end of October

yep the other point is note the other point with us being in Europe is we had

a say in these rules and regulations and that there are all these members come

countries they don't know how many 20 something isn't it 20 something and if

one member if they're if they're voting on new latest new legislation if one

country doesn't agree with it then it doesn't get passed anyway so you know we

had a say 27 that's it I knew I knew it was a lot 27 countries all working

together 20 something so yep anyway we said enough know you've said enough

probably I'll be pulled up for for saying that I probably shouldn't look at

that 3,400 Lori's from Rotterdam to England

how will it be managed after brick breaks isn't exactly I thought I thought

you were going to say that the the the 3400 lorries were going up Mount Everest

piasa said the Commonwealth countries do they have an input for the into the

brexit deceit decision no they don't it's only only people in the UK that

that could vote on that that's a good point though that's a good point no

doubt this will dominate this kind politics for decades to come yes well

we'll ever be talking about to the for the rest of our life yeah and probably

for the rest of the livestream today but yet yeah it's worth mentioning that the

Commonwealth countries are mainly ceremonial now so they're so that the

ties are are mainly ceremonial so so when the Queen or well not so much the

Queen now because she is 93 years old but Prince Charles and all the rest of

them they're going to have to get into a very big plane because there are so many

of them now so when they go around the world quite often they will visit

Commonwealth countries so countries that used to have a direct connection to the

UK but nowadays it's more it's more a sort of ceremonial thing to be honest so

we go see Tomic is this as commented about what about what I've said and he's

very right every policy that comes from the EU was approved by our politicians

by our elected politicians it's never been imposed by force it's exactly right

and a lot of people have already said that we'll probably keep most of the

rules and laws anyway so you know it's not like there's been some major I mean

the cause farmers and fisheries that fisheries has been it has been a big

contentious issue about where we can fish and who can fish in our waters but

you know there's difficult decisions have to be made sometimes anyway let's

not go on about that anymore it's not going about it you've been talking about

the last 20 minutes I wasn't planning on that this is the problem sometimes I

will mention something just offhand I will I will just raise a moment of

something and then Steve will talk about it for 20 minutes right let's talk about

crying yes because this week Theresa May was getting very upset and I

thought it would be interesting to take a look at some words and phrases in

English that involved the words tears crying anything to do

with having a good cry now Steve showed me something very interesting earlier

didn't you ah can you show that a bit later mr. Duncan

I will show it later but there was something that Steve showed me and I

thought it was quite a quite interesting yes so we'll have a look at that later

also I need to give you the answer to the question that I asked earlier so can

you see on the screen now there it is the wonderful Eiffel Tower and this week

it was in the news because someone tried to climb to the top in fact he got all

the way to the top but it was eventually after about seven hours arrested and

taken away and he hasn't been seen since I think I think he's probably sitting in

the Bastille Bert can you see something else

there is another Eiffel Tower can you believe it Steve there is another Eiffel

Tower and another Paris there it is look at that

but that isn't in France that is somewhere else do you know where it is

Steve no tell me where that it's at a model no it's a full-scale it's

everything it's a it's a full-scale reproduction of Paris and yes you can

probably guess where it is it is actually in China Oh southern China and

this particular place is is China's own version of of Paris but the sad thing is

hardly anyone lives there it's one of those famous Chinese ghost towns and

this particular place was constructed in I think construction started in 2007 so

the same year I left China to return to the UK this particular place was

actually constructed so that is actually in China so here's the real one and

there is the fake one is it the same Sarris it isn't okay it but it's very

clever the way they've done it I don't think it is is tall it's not as tall as

the original but it's still that's still pretty

impressive I must say very impressive but it is a shame that no one is really

living there because most people can't afford to actually live in that place

unfortunately so there it was the answer to that question now mr. Steve you have

some words and phrases connected to the subject that we have been talking about

today yes Teresa may was crying outside number 10 so we have some crying and

tears idioms and phrases with mr. Steve why here we go let's start with the word

itself I start with tears or tears shall we a tear obviously something that

which are produced by the glands in the corner of your eye tears of course is

the is the plural version and you get tears of course which you to some kind

of emotional upset sadness or you could decry from happiness sometimes people

cry from happiness them they they're not sad they're just so happy they cry and

sometimes you you get tears in your eyes if you get something stuck in your eyes

you get smoke in your eye or dust but that doesn't mean that you're upset

about something that's just a mechanical reaction to getting something in your

eye so you can say that he or she had a tear in their eye or they had tears in

their eyes if you have a tear in your eye

that's quite a sort of mild emotional thing you might shed a tear you might

have a half a tear say your car broke down and it had to go to the I had to go

to the neck as yard I'd have to be broken up you couldn't repair it anymore

it was so old you might say goodbye to it with a tear in your eye

so you're not desperately upset you've just slightly emotional and you have a

little tear in your eyes over the the loss of something you can be in tears if

you're in tears it means there's another word for crying he or she was crying he

or she was in years you can shed it here

that means to Schiff you shed it here that just means a tear is is dropping

down your face from the corner of your eye you shed a tear at the loss of your

loved one for example you could be in floods of tears crying uncontrollably in

floods of tears so it's like the so many tears it's causing a flood so that's an

expression we sometimes use that person was so upset they were in floods of

tears over the death of their cat for example if you feel emotion kassay

you're watching a film or someone is telling you a sad story

you might feel tears welling up you're not actually crying but you can feel the

tears that that feeling you get when tears are coming in your eyes it's

actually quite can be quite painful can't it but there is a feeling when

tears are welling up when they're starting to appear in your eyes your

eyes might go a bit glassy looking or a bit watery you're not actually crying

the tears are starting to form they're welling up in your eyes she welled up

with sadness you can burst into tears so you suddenly from nowhere start crying

it's a sudden sudden emotional something happens it makes you suddenly very sad

or upset and you burst into tears you suddenly start crying you can be tearful

if you're tearful it means you're about to cry your tearful you get it it's a

bit like welling up with tears you're getting tearful you're you're you're

starting to get to the point where you might start actually crying you could be

bored to tears it's an expression that we sometimes use if you're so bored with

something then you say that you're bored to tears you would you will you will do

anything even crying to break the boredom

what that expression means bought it yeah I went to I went to work today and

I was bored to tears you had so little to do you were just bored that's an

expression you can sometimes use you can be moved to tears you can go and watch a

film and it can be very sad film telling a story or someone sad life somebody

dies or something happened two lovers a love story and one of them dies you you

may be moved it is so emotional that you actually cry yourself you moved to tears

now I've got a cup for you of these on on bits of paper yes so if you go to

watch a film that moves you to tears you could say that was a tearjerker a

tearjerker so it's a it's a particular genre of film that is deliberately

designed to make you emotional and to make you cry that film was a t is a

tearjerker so it could have been a sad story a love story was a famous film

from the nineteen story the nineteen seventies and you could describe that as

a tearjerker where do I begin... gets you crying oh I tell you another can be a simple

truth about the love she brings to me Oh where do I start I was going to say

another good film if you want to have a good cry is ghost ghost there that's a

tearjerker classic that always gets me I must admit there are some movies that

make me cry and I think I think ghost is a very good example

especially when Sam has to say goodbye his Whoopi Goldberg says it's time to go

Sam and Sam has to say goodbye and he goes

off into the light you know Righteous Brothers start see

you don't cry that point in that film you're a hard

person i'll pull yourself together mr. Duncan pull yourself together

you say to people if they're crying uncontrollably and you want to try and

support well actually mom you're not trying to support them you might be

annoyed and you'll say come on pull yourself together let's go and get a cup

of tea is that how you give supporters it's do well yourself well it depends on

how you say it do you slice it do you slap them as well

Oh pull yourself together well you're very so that so that's worth what the

bruises were on your mum's face is your whole life very sad

or are you going through a particularly prolonged period of sadness or upset yes

you could say that your life is a vale of tears a vale of tears Shakespeare yes

exactly the veil being the situation or your life itself that's sort of tragic a

tragedy unhappy tragedy your life is say well you could say for example that a

loved one has died in your life it's very sad and of course that sadness

extends for a period of time and you could describe that period as a veil of

Tears because you literally probably have been

upset or sad for a long time and you might want to escape from this veil of

Tears one day we will meet again beyond this veil of Tears you might say if your

loved one had terminal illness for example and you wanted to to say that

you will meet them again someday my life is a veil of Tears how can I change it

for the better so lots of things could have gone wrong in your life you might

have lost your job you cried because of that you your partner might have left

you you cried about that you might have crashed your car you cried about that

and lots of things happening like that you might describe your life as a veil

of Tears I need to change my life and leave this vale of tears behind yes not

often used these days but it could be used to describe your light of its yeah

constantly sad yes Shakespeare wrote about the the burden of his existence so

he talked about the weight of existence and the the thousand natural shocks that

flesh is heir to and to leave this vale of tears so it was Shakespeare that

coined that particular phrase and wonder if he coined this one crocodile tears

crocodile tears these are false this is when you when you say someone's got

crocodile tears you are referring to the fact that they are displaying false or

or insincere sadness or remorse so they're pretending to be sad they're not

really sad but they're pretending to be sad because they think that socially

they should behave in this way it's a it's a false belief well they used it

they actually believed that crocodiles this comes from a an actual expression

from hundreds of years ago they used to think that crocodiles were would cry

when they caught their prey and at them it was actually a belief that crocodiles

were expressing sadness they were that they didn't really want to eat their

prey alive and that they would cry while they were actually consuming their

victims but of course the idea is that they weren't really sad they were

actually gobbling up their victims but they were appearing to be sad but they

really weren't so if somebody appears to be sad or upset over something but

really you know they're not you describe that as crocodile tears it doesn't mean

they're actually crying sometimes there may be for example you might say Jane

shed crocodile tears when Monica didn't get the promotion at work

so say you had a friend or somebody you you pretend to have a you've got

somebody at work and your your arrival to them at work and they go for a job

position secretly you're hoping that they don't get it because you want that

position yourself and then they go for that job they go for the interview and

then they're told they don't get it and they're crying and you go up to the mean

you try and can solve them so uh I'm so sorry you didn't get that job you work

so hard that was really the job for you but really you don't mean it so you're

really secretly pleased somebody if they knew that you didn't really want that

person to get their job get that job you might say that you were shedding

crocodile tears but doesn't it normally mean if you are actually crying well it

can do yeah but somebody did you don't have to be actually crying because it's

just an insincere show of emotion that's very interesting you say you say about

crocodiles crying when they're eating things because I often cry when I'm

eating a large tub of Ben & Jerry's I'm often crying for different reasons

you might go you might somebody might die in you might go to the funeral you

might be pretending to cry you're upset that they died but in fact you hated

them really and in fact everybody knew you

hated them and they see you crying at the funeral and they say well what's

what are they crying for they never get on before they were always enemies

that's crocodile tears that is so you can't trust somebody because they're

showing an insincere display oh you know you know it always impresses me I'm

always impressed by actors who are able to cry for real when they're playing

apart so that there is one movie Shadowlands Shadowlands might be one of

the saddest movies I've ever watched is it a tearjerker it is not just a

tearjerker but it does contain a lot of crying and there is a scene Shadowlands

stars Antony Hopkins and it it has a scene where where one of

the main protagonists dies and so I'm not gonna give a give it away I don't

give it away you see I'm just saying that in the movie there is a moment

where someone dies in the film and then Anthony Hopkins is comforting a young

boy and they are both crying and it the scene goes on for a very long time it's

very hard to watch I don't think I've ever seen a scene or watched a scene in

a movie that's made me feel so uncomfortable and upset because they cry

and cry and cry for a very long time it goes on for ages Shadowlands it's a

great film but incredibly depressing don't want to watch that mr. Duncan

will all end in tears this is quite a common expression that we use in the UK

it's used when you know something is doomed to failure and will cause a lot

of heartache to the people involved but the people that are involved don't know

that that's going to happen but you do so you can see that something Bad's

going to happen but the people that are involved in it don't know and that's

when you use that expression for example everyone knew that their business

venture would end in tears so the a couple of people might have set

up business together and you might have advised against it or other people might

have advised against it for various reasons it was never going to succeed it

was doomed to failure perhaps they were trying to enter a

market that was dying or they couldn't get on together and you might say then

you would use that expression in that context stock markets are currently very

unstable and for a lot of investors it will all end in tears

so stock markets are volatile people might put their money into it

might say for example at the moment stock markets are riding high it might

be not a good time to invest somebody might advise you against it but you go

ahead anyway and then you lose half your money and somebody might say to you well

I told you it'd all end in tears doesn't mean you're gonna literally cry it just

means it's something's doomed to failure and people are going to be upset as as a

result you use this expression a lot in relationships as well to describe

relationships that don't end well that relationship you might say will end in

tears so two people for example there might be of different religious

backgrounds but they fall in love and you say that relationship will end in

tears because the parents won't agree or there weren't all they'll be cast out by

the one family or the other it may be that there may be a big age difference

for example and you know that that's not going to succeed in the long run so you

say that relationship will end in tears it might be that they one lives you know

a thousand miles away from the other one they fall in love on holiday and then

they think that they can make the relationship work but it won't it all

ends in tears and probably literally in the Lange case I tell you something the

be tearful it means they are about to cry or they are they are feeling as if

they are going to cry or something can be tearful maybe a

movie that's sad or teary as well so this is an interesting one in theory we

can describe a person as teary it means it means they they their eyes

appear very wet and glassy as Steve said so they are very teary Palmeiro says

that of course you can cry from happiness which we've already mentioned

you see that a lot now in reality TV shows don't you when the parents are all

watching for example what's the one I'm thinking of mr. Duncan where the singers

are there and they're trying to trying to be successful they come onto the

stage and the judges of their X Factor the X Factor that cities are , that's

the one I'm thinking of and they do this amazing performance and the judges say

they're wonderful and the parents are there they're crying with happiness

because their son or daughter has done so well are in this talent contest tears

of happiness it's not even about that anymore I think I think people just cry

because they think it's it's somehow it's somehow looks good it looks good to

other people if you cry about something maybe you win an award or maybe you are

talking about something that happened in your life now genuinely it might be

upsetting but I think it's it's it's all too easy nowadays just to just start

crying it it's almost as if is if you have to this is one of the things that

always makes me a little annoyed when I watch the news and they interview

someone and the person asking the questions is trying to get the person

they are interviewing to cry they're trying to get them to cry yes because it

looks better it's a better news story it's a horrible thing to say but this

this is the world we now live in tears tears our views tears our clicks

they are something we can never understand you see a lot on the news

that somebody might get stabbed a teenager might get stabbed which seems

to happen a lot these days in this country and then the next the same day

they're interviewing the parents on television and they say a few words and

then that the the interviewers are deliberately as you say trying to

encourage the person to cry and it's it's a disgraceful

according as you say because they're only trying that they've got to get

people to cry because that will make the report their report seemed worth

watching because people love to see in a horrible way they love to see other

people suffering as well some people are yes that's right and and well I think

possibly the majority of people like to see other people suffering because it

makes them feel better about their own lives yeah but this this actually goes

to another subject about the the state of of television in general I mean we

have a TV show here where families confront each other over over various

disagreements and sometimes they get very violent or angry but it has become

entertainment for people to watch and it's recently being being axed it's

actually being stopped because one of the people that were appeared on there

took part in a lie-detector test and he failed and a few days later he died now

I'm assuming from that we don't know the full details that he must have maybe

took his own life yes the TV show I think he did so that's it so so because

of this need to entertain people with other people's misery and misfortune one

person has taken their own life so that's what it appears to be anyway

and so this particular program has now been axed it has been stopped it will

not appear anymore but I think it is a kind of a kind of hint a kind of sign of

where Humanity is gone we do like watching people on television who don't

seem to be as well off or it always good or is is talented is what we think we

are and I'm not talking from from our point of view but I'm talking generally

and it's quite sad really I think it's a very sad indictment of the way we we we

look for entertainment nowadays mr. Duncan would you like I can we've used

words and expressions connected with connected with tears mmm we can now move

on to words and expressions to do was crying yeah and I found a very funny

graph because crying there are lots of different types of crying and I found

something quite funny on the internet which I thought I'd like to share with

you it's a graph that looks at the patheticness the level of patheticness

at the bottom and the amount of sympathy that you would get from this type of

crying so for example if we go start at the right at the top right if you

weeping is a type of crying if you're weeping that's the type of crime that

gets you that there is low on the pathetic scale so if you're weeping so

you could be weeping because somebody's died and you're very upset if somebody

describes you if you're actually weeping then you that is seen as as not pathetic

and you will get a high amount of sympathy from it but at the other end

down at the bottom right down at the bottom left if you are blubbering which

is the type of a type of crying then people will see that as pathetic

you will get you won't get much sympathy from it blubbering is what children

often do and and it's very it's very it's very obvious so if somebody's

crying loudly and making lots of noise then generally that scene is pathetic

and you won't get much sympathy if you blubber really loudly crying and you and

making lots of noises that's embarrassing and and people will see

that as pathetic and you won't get much sympathy I think I think I'm about to

burst into tears from yes from this so I can see I can see so so the line going

upwards is the sympathy that Allah sympathy level that yes I'm saying that

now the sympathy level going upwards and at the bottom going across from high to

low is the patheticness yeah now I think that's a very strong word to use but

maybe also you could say the the the the weakness or the the outward frailty of a

person's character so I think that's another way of putting it I think

patheticness is a bit strong well it was it was it's it's meant meant really as

humor is it this is yes and it made me laugh so I thought I wanted to share it

with people because when you cry openly in public this is the people crying

openly in public isn't it really then you will either you will get more

sympathy depending on on the event that's happened and the and the way that

you actually cry okay so blubbering is is something that the children tend to

do and soda and sniveling sniffing a lot at the same time of crying and and and

children will often do this and it's seen as a little pathetic and you won't

get very much sympathy at so so so starting from the bottom blubbering is

is highly pathetic yeah and also you get very little sympathy exactly then

Snively it's sorry mr. Duncan and the

implication is that when you're blubbering you're really crying over

something that really isn't that important so it could be that you've

just for example dropped your ice cream onto your trousers and you burst into

tears that's pathetic it's only ice cream dropped on your trousers and

you're not gonna get very much sympathy from that are you mr. doe what if your

family has just been killed in a car crash so so maybe they were driving

along the road and then suddenly

described your type of crying there is blubbering yes but what if you are

blubbering you would be weeping you would be sobbing just wring the graph

back mister don't guess but what if what if you what if you're your type of

crying because people cry in different ways yes but a blubber is a cry over

something minor so what if what if maybe that's their only way of showing emotion

though wouldn't you would weep over the death of somebody in your family you

would weep openly weep or you would sob sobbing is a kind of a louder weeping

isn't it I suppose it that it depends who it is really well that's it so if

you sob or weep you're you're going to get a high level of sympathy because

that is something really serious that's happened or very sad and you are well

within your rights to weep so there's a very good justification for crying okay

and so that's weeping or sobbing sobbing slightly less sympathy because it's

louder okay louder the type of crying generally

the less sympathy you get like we need to move on with people feel as though

you've controlled your emotion yeah I wish I wish you would control yourself

as well because we've only got five minutes fine and I've got a few

expressions so yeah yes there are many different types of crying so from the

the simpering blubbering right up to the uncontrollable weeping

and bawling that's another type of crying bawling okay and a child often

this is described as bawling okay and that that's sort of gets a medium level

of sympathy okay because they might have fallen over and graze they're hurt their

knee okay and they will bawl out loud but yeah you'll get some sympathy

because maybe a little injuries occurred whereas blubbering that's over something

silly you don't get much sympathy okay words and expression to do with crying

cry wolf and dancing the song from AHA cry wolf time to worry now or something

I don't know what the words are but that is a song from God's sake

it's an old fable crying wolf it means that it's from Aesop's fables so there

was a shepherd who kept a safe you're not gonna tell

the story oh yeah now that the whole story but if you complain about

something when nothing's really wrong and you keep complaining about it and

people come to your aid and they can see that nothing is wrong you keep doing it

people eventually become numb to that and then they won't really help you will

believe you when something really serious is happening so if in the fable

the the shepherd the shepherd boy kept saying please help me there's a wolf

coming to eat the Sheep and they went to help him and there wasn't a wolf he was

lying he was making it up so then he shouted again that there was a wolf

coming to eat the Sheep they came again to help him and this hasn't happened

several times in the end what they said we're not going to help him and then the

Riddhi was a wolf that came along and at all the sheep and but they didn't come

to help him because he was he was before he lied about it we all know people who

it's it's like you're raising a false alarm about something and if you keep

doing that people eventually won't believe you and then when something

really serious does happen nobody will come to your aid or to your help John is

always crying wolf over his work and gets us to help him out and so

everyone will help him out so somebody at work might be saying well I'm so busy

I someone's got to help me I'll never get all this work done and then you go

to help him and actually he wasn't really that busy at all but then when he

really is snowed down under work and and and and it says that he wants people to

help her nobody goes to help him because he's lied about it before so to claim

you're in danger or in trouble when you're really not and then no one

believes you and your video to cry wolf everybody knows people who do that so

you said you weren't gonna tell a story but then you did well it's likely don't

cry over spilt milk no or spilled milk you can spilt a foot spilt on there but

you could in in English you can use the word spilt SPI double led okay which

means the same thing yes I attempted to be in American English it's a saying

don't cry over spilt milk so so if P so it's a waste of time getting upset or

worrying about something that's happened and can't be changed so if something

happens and you can't do anything about it somebody might say to you well

there's no use crying over spilt milk in other words it's already happened

that you use when you're frustrated or surprised or angry or irritated at

author sake what it's an expression you use when you're frustrated

something if I crying out loud will someone answer that damn phone so you're

frustrated about something and it's just an expression you use to express your

frustration or your anger over something what if I crying out loud will you just

hurry up and get ready we're gonna be late

Steve says that a lot to me you might say we might use a big expression

instead but that was I think you almost did I know it's a crying shame a crying

shame if something's a crying shame it's an unfortunate situation a real shame a

crying shame it's almost so bad it might make you cry it's a crying shame that in

this society people have to sleep out on the streets is an expression that a

politician might make to describe people who are homeless and sleepy it's a

crying shame it's so bad you almost want to cry about it it's a crying shame that

you can cry off if you cry off it means that you you break a promise or an

agreement or a commitment and you use a pathetic excuse

so you cry a bill with what bill was supposed to help me move house today

bill was supposed to move make that bill was supposed to help me move house today

but he cried off at the last minute so in other words he bill was supposed to

get help moving house but his friend cried off I know bill there were

supposed to help me move house today but he made it move a pathetic excuse and

cried off and my tennis partner cried off this morning so we will have to

cancel the match sadly Sally won't be coming on the trip

she's cried off so it's some pathetic excuse so for example if I was going to

help somebody to do something and the last minute I found

him said oh oh I've got a bit of a cold today they would say that you've cried

off it's a pathetic you've used some pathetic excuse to get out of doing

something so in a bill cried off and he said that he just didn't feel very riled

that day so he couldn't help his friend move house you just use a pathetic

excuse it's not a real genuine excuse it's a it's a pathetic excuse her Oh

they've cried off that's it mr. Duncan I'm finished

no sometimes a person can also have a very sad story to tell you and maybe the

story is so sad it might make the other person cry and we can call these things

sob stories yeah but sometimes we can use it also sarcastically so if a person

is trying to get sympathy you can say oh he came round last night he was telling

me all about his life he gave me the whole sob story so maybe something that

they're telling you that is sad but maybe you have no real interest in or

maybe something that that they are blowing out of proportion they are

making it seem worse than it really is so yes there are many ways of using

tears and cry Jeff that's got one there crying a beer

cry in your beer and your beer that that's an expression used to describe

men who are upset and sad and I might go to a pub and they know that they tell

people about all the sad things that have happened and they've got a pint of

beer in front and they're crying in their beer and they're drinking alcohol

to try and make themselves feel better yes also of course when you do start to

cry so like Theresa May last week when she was giving her resignation speech

you can break down so there's an interesting yes interesting phrase

breakdown so a person can break down emotionally they break down in tears or

they start to cry they break down so they begin crying or they start to get

upset about something they break down how Mira's asked how would

you describe Teresa maid crying well I think you would say that she broke down

in tears yes so she tried to hold them back she tried her best to hold the

tears back but unfortunately well we know what

happened next she could not hold it back yeah we're

not we're not trying to to say that crying is wrong we all need to let our

emotions out I think that's why British people now tend to display their

emotions more because it's supposed to be healthier to to not to hold your

emotions in it's supposed to be healthier to let it out but sometimes

you know if you let your emotions out in public you don't receive you know a very

good hearing you know who I blame crying a river Steve yes you know who I blame I

know who I'm asking you a question I Anna Princess Diana it's her fault yes

no hmm go on nobody nobody cried in public until Princess Diana died and

then everyone everyone it was almost like a contest that was the big shock

wasn't it when Princess Diana died that the the ouch pouring of emotion in

public was something we'd never seen in British people before yes but at the

point I'm trying to make is it crossed into something else and it never left

the British Way of thinking it never left us since 1997 when she died there

was a sort of I don't want to be unkind because it was a we was a very sad thing

but there was a sort of what was the feeling of hysteria where people were

just feeling they were feeling sad because they felt that they should be

sad and then they felt as if they weren't showing enough emotion so they

tried to get more emotion out and in the end they're just crying but but I think

I think nothing is nothing is being the same though since Princess Diana died

I'm not saying it isn't sad what I'm saying is the way we show our emotion

and the way we express ourselves quite often even with with small things or

trivial things we get we overreact we get far too upset over things you can

either agree with me or disagree it's up to you because we're going now you can

cry a river means you're crying a lot hmm as a song isn't that yes we're going
