So I think it does look different.

It does look more striking if something is striking.

It means it leaves a strong impression

or it makes a strong impression on someone.

As I've said before, I don't want to keep repeating myself,

but I have in the past bought lots of clothes that are black.

I have black coats, black jackets, black T-shirts.

But I don't really wear black on my live

streams or even my lessons, to be honest.

I always like to wear something bright

when I am making my videos or when I'm doing my live streams.

But it would appear that a lot of people

seem to like wearing the colour black.

It is I suppose it is one.

It is a colour that is suitable for many people

of all shapes and sizes.

And I will.

I have been told that in the past, especially in the early days.

I remember when I started making my live stream as well

before then, even when I when I first started

making my English lessons over 15 years ago,

I did receive a lot of interesting comments

in the very early days when YouTube was still young.

So I started doing this way back in 2006

and I did receive a lot of positive,

but also a lot of negative comments.

When I first started doing this many years ago,

and I think it's because this way of doing

or this way of teaching or this way of

presenting yourself at that time was unusual.

However,

I know this is not

going to sound modest and I will sound like a real big head.

If you watch many people now who teach English,

you will find that many of them seem

to be copying the style

that I have when I'm presenting or teaching.

So I think I think maybe I'm not sure.

I'm not saying this, but maybe over the years

I have influenced a lot of people

who teach English on YouTube.

I'm not sure.

So maybe influential is another word you might use.

I know. I know.

It does not sound very modest.

You have to be modest in this world, although sometimes

you also have to

blow your own trumpet as well.

You have to talk about yourself sometimes.

By the way, today we are talking all about slogan boards.

Hmm. You might be surprised

to find how often slogans are used.

We often think of slogans as

being used in advertising.

But also and I'm talking about here in the UK

over the years, we have used slogans

as a way of reminding people of certain things,

maybe things connected to safety,

being safe, doing things in a safe way.

So quite often, and especially here

and we are going to look at this a little bit later on.

There are times when we have used

slogans as a way of,

I suppose I would say,

raising awareness of something.

Maybe people who drive too fast on the roads

maybe people who do not take care when they are driving.

Over the years, we have used many different

campaigns and advertisements to encourage people

to do something safer or to be more cautious.

And quite often they will use slogans

And as I just mentioned, it is also possible to use slogans

when you are promoting something or advertising something.

So there are many places where you can see

or maybe you can use slogans

I suppose another one is protesting as well.

If you are protesting, if you are marching through the streets

and you are protesting against something,

maybe you feel angry about a certain thing.

Maybe you want to show your anger and maybe a lot of people

want to join and protest.

Quite often people will use slogans.

I suppose one of the most common ones when people are protesting,

especially if they are making a demand, a demand of some sort.

They will say, What do we want more, Mr.

Duncan?

When do we want it? Now.

What do we want more?

Mr. Duncan.

When do we want it? Now.

So that is a common slogan without, of course, the Mr.

Duncan part,

maybe.

What do we want? More freedom.

When do we want it? Now.

Or maybe what do we want?

Better working conditions.

When do we want them? Now.

So I suppose that is the most common slogan

that you might hear, especially when people are feeling a little annoyed.

And let's let's just face reality for a moment.

At the moment in this world, there are many people who are angry

about certain issues, certain things,

and quite often they will use slogans.

It's a great word, isn't it? Slogan

something you you hear or something you say.

It is often repeated, and quite often a slogan

is something that will go into your brain and stay there

for quite a while.

although it normally does

So now I am having to stay far away from Steve because I don't want to catch his cold.

I don't want to become sick.

I really don't want to get a cold.

I don't want to get a fever.

I don't want to lose my voice

because I have to do this for the whole of April.

So if I become sick, if I become ill,

then I might not be able to do my live streams

that might be good news for some people,

but for many, I'm sure it will be bad as well.

Now, if you have been watching my Sunday livestreams, you will know

that we have been talking about meeting up, having a special meet somewhere.

I'm not sure where or when at the moment because the world is

in a rather chaotic state,

So at the moment I'm not sure when, but yes, I think it is a very good idea.

some sort of meeting, some sort of get together

often used to encourage people

to remember certain things.

I thought I would start off today's edition with a selfie,

just in case you're watching this in 2050 and you don't know what a selfie is.

I'm not going to tell you and you won't be able to ask me in person because I'm dead.

We are all here again to take a peek

into that wonderful world of English

so let us all join hands and say the magic words.

For goodness sake, Mr.

Duncan, we haven't got all day get on with it.

Can you see what sort of weather we're having here today?

Well, there is poor visibility for a start.

It isn't a clear day by any means.

It is a foggy day here in England

where you can use Foggy as an idiom

to describe the inability to remember something.

We can say I haven't the foggiest idea, which means you do not remember

or you cannot recall a certain event or a piece of information

Today's fog has been caused by warm

and cold air colliding with each other.

This fog is made up of tiny particles of moisture.

You often see fog forming in the early morning or evening

or as the temperature changes

the subject of weather is a fascinating one.

And for the typical English person such as myself,

it is a subject that is often discussed in general day

to day conversation

The two words shown here

may look similar, but they are in fact very different.

The words perspective and perspective are often confused.

That is to say one is used instead of the other

First of all, the word perspective

defines the way in which things are seen, how an object appears

depending on its size, shape and relative distance from other things around it.

In drawing and painting perspective

is used to give the illusion of depth and distance.

We can also use this word to express a person's

view of the world as their point of view,

a person's perspective of the world.

The views and opinions held by us

all come from our own perspective.

Then there is the word perspective,

which means something that is expected or is expecting to be done in the future.

Something that is likely to happen at a later date is prospective.

I have a prospective client two coming to my office tomorrow.

So now there is no need to get

these words confused ever again.

I have given you a clear perspective of what the differences are.

I have done this for you now

and for all the prospective online students

who will join me in the future.

This is a source pan full of boiling water.

The hot water is producing steam.

Steam is produced when water vapour rises.

Normally, water vapour cannot be seen.

But it is possible to show it when extreme temperatures are used.

For example, when hot vapour meets cool air.

This is one of the ways in which clouds are formed.

The process is called evaporation.

The word steam can be used in other ways.

For example, a person can let off steam.

This expression means that a person will release their tension

and pent up energy by doing something.

The action is normally a physical one, such as

going for a run

having a dance, or in extreme cases,

screaming out loud.

It would be fair to say that we all need to let off steam

at some point

It's time to take a look

at another part of English grammar.

Continuing the theme of punctuation

that we started in the last full English.

Today we will take a look at the dreaded apostrophe.

This particular punctuation mark is a controversial one

as its use has been widely disputed over the years.

Even now, there seems to be some confusion over how it should be used

In general, English, the apostrophe serves two purposes

to show for possessive quality of something

and to show that a word has been shortened

or a sentence has been made shorter.

In the possessive sense, the apostrophe shows that one thing belongs to another.

For example, Duncan's pen, Jill's pencil.

St Paul's Cathedral.

The apostrophe can come at the end of the possessive word.

For example, the teacher's college is over there.

A commonly confused use of the apostrophe comes with the word.

It's the apostrophe here.

Shows the contraction of it is.

It's my birthday today when the apostrophe is not used.

Then the possessive tense is being expressed.

A mouse has no fur on its tail.

Another common mistake made with the apostrophe

is to use it to show the plural of ordinary words.

This is incorrect.

Once again, the apostrophe is only used when you wish to show a possessive clause

or the contraction of a word or sentence

and there

Something very strange is happening to the weather.

And also it's very windy.

wind across England today.

And I have no idea why we are getting it.

In fact, I don't know why the news isn't even talking about it.

Normally when we have strong winds or severe weather,

quite often the news well will often talk about it.

They will want to discuss it.

But at the moment they're not.

Well, I suppose you might say that they have other things to talk about.

Maybe that is the reason why Thank you for joining me.

A lot of people today talking about Mr.

Steve and his speed of speaking.

I think sometimes what happens with Steve when he's talking,

he gets very excited and emotional and sometimes he

he wants to express himself very quickly, but

he gets so excited.

Sometimes the words come out too fast and it is possible to speak too quickly.

Even even if you are with native

English speakers, if you are in a group of people and you talk too quickly,

it can be a little annoying.

So you don't always have to speak at a thousand miles an hour.

It is possible to express yourself without going full speed.

It is possible to do that.

It might be something good, it might be something bad, it might be a warning,

it might be the name of your favourite product

I think this is rather intriguing because I'm sure

So I am going to show some slogans today

slogans, things that are often said.

So what is a slogan?

Well, most people understand slogans

as a phrase created to be easily remembered.

So a slogan is a phrase, a sentence,

maybe something that goes alongside a product,

something that a group of people want you to remember.

Maybe.

Advertisement. Will have slogans.

Maybe something political will have a slogan.

And as I said earlier, perhaps a protest as well.

If people are protesting about something,

they might also use slogans.

So a slogan is a phrase created to be easily remembered.

A slogan normally refers to something

important or relevant

So when we talk about important things may be something that you have to remember.

Maybe there is something that you have to do

maybe something you have to avoid doing

A slogan normally refers

to something important or relevant.

Something relevant is something that is used or needed,

or maybe something that is important during a certain period of time.

We use the word relevant

products and brands

will often have a slogan connected to them,

and I'm sure there must be lots and lots of products.

Companies that you can think of

that have their own slogan

and we will be playing a little competition later on.

Guess the brand name.

So I will give you some slogans

and I want you to tell me what the product is if you can.

Products and brand names

will often have a slogan connected to them,

and there is a reason for that

because they want you to buy their product.

They want you to pick up their product at the supermarket.

Slogans are a way of getting that product

into your mind.

Advertisment or advertisers over

the years have received a lot of criticism

and the way that they use adverts

to change a person's perspective,

a slogan can make something important stick in the mind

to remember something or to encourage people to remember something.

You want that thing that product or that information.

You want it to stick

in the mind.

You want it to stay in there.

So that is one of the reasons, and I would say one of the main reasons

why we have slogans in Britain.

There have been some well-known slogans used in the past.

So I'm going to show you some examples

of slogans that have been used here.

In the UK as part of government campaigns in the past.

And the first one I'm going to show

you is now, this is a good slogan.

I'm not sure if you've heard of this,

but for a very long time it was a very popular slogan.

And here it is.

Go to work on an egg.

I know it sounds strange,

but it was used in a government campaign

to encourage people to

eat eggs, to consume eggs.

And there it is.

You can see it now next to me.

So there it is. The original commercial

that was shown, I think it was 1957

so this particular campaign

was started in 1957

and this was maybe three or four years

after eggs became available again

after rationing during the Second World War.

So it wasn't until the late 1950s

when lots of food became available again

here in Britain after the end of the Second World War.

So this particular campaign, this particular slogan

was used to encourage people to start

eating eggs, buying eggs,

and it was a government campaign

and the slogan that they used was go to work on an egg

which of course was encouraging people to have eggs for their breakfast.

I don't know about you, but I do like boiled eggs you put the

you put the egg in boiling water for about 3 minutes, then you take it out,

you open the top and you enjoy the delicious boiled egg.

And to be honest with you, I do like my boiled egg to be really

I don't like it when it's hard I like it runny and soft

so there is the

first slogan that was used here in the UK

in the late 1950s

to encourage people to eat more eggs.

Here is another one.

I will just show you the actual slogan

Clunk Click Every Trip.

This was a campaign and the slogan

that was used to encourage people or to remind people,

especially car drivers, to wear their seatbelt.

So when you put your seatbelt on you normally hear

a sound

clunk click every trip,

encouraging people to remember

when you get into a car, you must put on your seatbelt

Of course, these days you have to.

It is the law. You have no choice.

So there is no discussion anymore about that.

You must wear a seatbelt.

I think it was the the early 1980s.

I think maybe the early 1980s was

when it became law to wear a seatbelt in the car.

So not just the driver but also the passenger and also the passengers in the back,

they also have to wear their seatbelt or else you will get a big fine for not doing so.

Here is another one, a very interesting one

once again talking about road safety.

Think once, think twice, think bye.

This was a very popular advertisement campaign

during the early 1970s and there you can see

this is actually a photograph from the advert

and it is encouraging people to be aware of motorcyclists

and the reason for that is, well

having written a motorbike, am I on my own by myself in the past.

So I used to own a motorbike and I do realise that motorcyclists

are quite vulnerable on the road

and there are many accidents every year

where car drivers will pull out or go into the road

and they will hit a motorcyclist because they haven't noticed them.

So collisions between cars

and motorcycles are quite common.

So this particular advertising campaign

was trying to encourage people to remember

to look out for motorbikes on the road

before they pull out into the traffic.

And I

have well I used to have a lot of friends who rode motorbikes.

Not anymore.

Most of them now have cars

but yes, I did have quite a few friends.

One of my friends was actually killed on his motorbike.

He actually died.

My best friend from school actually died on his motorbike.

It is something that you have to be aware of,

and that's the reason why we have the slogan

Think once, think twice,

think bike.

Look out for those motorcyclists.

Here's another one.

Another warning about road safety.

You might notice that there are lots

of slogans, lots of campaigns

trying to make people more safe, which I think is a good thing.

I don't think it's a bad thing.

And this particular campaign

once again was encouraging people not to speed whilst driving.

So here is a good slogan.

Don't fool yourself.

Speed kills.

And this was a campaign. This particular advert

was quite graphic

it was one of those particular campaigns that was trying to shock people.

Sometimes you do, sometimes to get people to listen to you.

You have to shock them.

You have to give them a shock.

So I remember this particular commercial

because it was very graphic.

It showed a couple driving along in the car

and then they were distracted because they were talking to each other.

And then suddenly the driver loses control of his car

and he crashes the car

and they are inside the car covered in blood.

And it's really, really quite awful.

But it is a way of getting the message across.

So the slogan for this particular

commercial was, don't fool yourself.

Speed Kills, which I think is true

when you think about it, speeding and also being distracted but at the same time,

here is another one.

And if you were around

in the early 1980s

and you lived in this country,

you probably saw this particular thing at some point.

And this particular campaign was in the very early days

when HIV and AIDS was first discovered

and this was the very first campaign

that the government in this country actually ran.

And it was talking about the seriousness of the disease.

And at that time, of course, very little was known

about AIDS or HIV.

It was quite unknown at that time.

So this was the first time that any warning had been produced.

And they used once again a very shocking advert,

don't die of ignorance,

encouraging people to be safer, to be more aware

and this is the campaign that was used.

However, later on this was actually criticised

for scaring people too much

because people did not want to talk about the issue of HIV and AIDS.

They did not want to discuss it at that time because of this.

It made people actually too afraid and too scared.

So there

is an advertising campaign that was around here in the UK

I think it was around 1983 or 82,

but it did cause a lot of controversy

talking of warnings, here is another one.

Growing up I remember there was a

TV show called Grange Hill.

You might have heard of it, you might have seen it on YouTube,

a TV show about a school, and I used to watch it when I was still at school.

So I would come home from school and then I would watch

this particular show called Grange Hill, and it was about a school

and one of the stories in the show concerned

a student who became addicted to drugs.

And then after that, afterwards it's a campaign was launched

and the slogan

was, Just Say No.

Which is actually saying Just say no to drugs.

And this was promoted here in the UK,

but it actually eventually Ali, can you believe it?

This actually

was was used eventually in the United States as well.

So in advertising campaign,

which was also connected to a TV programme at the time.

And they were raising awareness of drug addiction

amongst teenagers,

something that was a problem in the 1980s.

And I suppose you might say that for for many countries

it is still a problem

Here we go.

Then we're going to look at some advertisements now,

some brands.

What I want you to do

is tell me what the brand is.

So I'm going to use the slogan

and I want you to tell me what the product is.
