i am hiding my sadness today with my lovely  big smile do you know why i'm feeling sad today  

well there might be a few reasons  in fact anyway we are here and  

i hope you are as well hi everybody this is mr  duncan in england how are you today are you okay i  

hope so are you happy i hope so we've got that out  of the way that is done and dusted when something  

is done and dusted it means it has been taken care  of it has been done it has been done and dusted

shall i say it shall i mention it

did you see the eurovision  song contest last night?

you can say what you want you are free  

to say anything you want about the  eurovision song contest because i've  

heard it already since getting up this morning  and everyone talking about it on the internet

but if you want to mention it you can don't worry  i won't be offended i won't be upset if you want  

to talk about eurovision the song contest and  how well the united kingdom did last night

you are more than welcome to  mention it it's it's not a problem  

i've got very thick skin you have to you see  because if you want to come on the internet and  

do this you have to have very thick skin anyway  for those wondering what the hell is this my name  

is duncan i talk about the english language  i've been doing this forever such a long time  

this year will be my 15th year on youtube i was  on youtube when youtube was giving away ipods  

did you know that in the early days of youtube  when youtube was just a little tiny baby on the  

internet they actually used to give away ipods  to get people to actually come on to youtube and  

set up an account it's true i'm not joking  they used to actually give them away  

that was a long time ago that was during youtube's  

first year of existence so i started doing this  in 2006. unfortunately i did not get a free ipod  

sadly so my name is duncan i talk about  english i love the english language you  

might say that i am an english addict a  lot of people say that mr duncan is crazy

about english or some people just say mr duncan  is crazy as you can see behind me it is a dull  

day we've had a lot of rain today it's been  raining but at the moment i think the rain  

has actually i think the rain  is starting to fall again  

yesterday we had a lovely day a lovely evening  as well did you see my live stream last night i  

decided to do a surprise live stream last night in  the garden with the sheep i hope you enjoyed that  

last night i was waiting for mr steve to come  back he went to see his mother yesterday and  

they had a lovely day together imagine that now  i don't think steve has seen his mother in person  

since last october so it's been a very long time  since steve saw his mum and as for my mother  

i haven't seen my mother for for over a year  in person fortunately in a couple of weeks from  

now i will be seeing my mother in person because  now we can go to visit our friends and relatives  

in care homes so that is very good news  for me here we go again yes we've made  

it all the way to the end of another week and  almost to the end of another weekend yes it's

sunday

and i hope your weekend has been okay mine  was all right even though i was feeling a  

little bit lonely yesterday you know what it's  like when you spend a lot of time with someone  

you you kind of get used to them being there  because they are always nearby but then suddenly  

when they vanish when they are not there nearby  you you feel a little lonely you feel alone  

unfortunately that's what happened  yesterday steve went to see his mum  

but don't worry because you kept me company last  night in the garden thank you very much once again  

for your lovely messages concerning last night's  unusual live stream and of course at the end of  

the live stream last night we did actually see mr  steve arrive back home after visiting his mum so  

he had a great day a wonderful time and i hope you  are having a good day as well it is english addict

we are supposed to have the olympic games  even though at the moment in japan there  

is a lot of doubt there about whether or not  the olympics should actually be held of course  

this is all concerning coronavirus and it  would appear that it's not the government  

who doesn't want to hold the olympic games  it's actually the people so there have been  

many protests in japan people saying we don't  really think we should be having the olympic  

games at the moment we don't think it's a good  idea however maybe we should have an olympic sport  

for clicking i think so i think maybe  when whenever the next olympic games are

we not we might not be seeing  one for a while after this year  

if there is an olympic sport that should  be added to the games i think finger  

clicking clicking on your mouse should be  an olympic sport and i think the recipient  

the recipient that doesn't sound right the  recipient of the first ever gold medal for

has anyone mentioned our very poor performance  last night in eurovision i'm going to be honest  

with you i did not like the song that the united  kingdom put forward i did not like it i didn't  

think it was a good song however i did think some  of the other songs were very good very nice and  

that is one of the things i always notice with  eurovision whenever the the songs are are shown  

they always seem to have a certain feel  or a certain sound but i think the british  

or should i say the uk entry was not very good  i don't think it sounded like a eurovision song  

to be honest however congratulations to italy  you won and i thought your song was very good  

i thought it was amazing very unusual but  somehow it still sounded like a eurovision  

song so even though it was a rock song it  still sounded like a eurovision song it's  

interesting that isn't it yeah i enjoyed it anyway  i enjoyed it very much maybe we will be looking  

at that a little bit later on because mr steve  will be here a little bit later on we have steve  

on his way to everyone else on the live chat  as well lots of people are here at the moment

valentin says i have a big regret oh well that's  interesting because today we are talking about  

that very subject we are talking about regrets  having regrets so one of the questions i'm going  

to ask today is do you ever regret anything do you  ever have a regret so today's question one of many  

have you ever regretted something so maybe you  regret something maybe something that you feel  

that you should have done have you ever regretted  something you have done is today's question  

it's the big question because we are looking  at regret now i think i don't want to give  

too much of this subject away at the moment  because we are talking about it later on but  

i think as we get older we do tend to carry more  regret as we get older so i sometimes feel that as  

we go through life we might find that we collect  regret and i suppose one of the big secrets of  

dealing with regret is is really how you handle  it so some people like to keep their regret  

nearby they see it as a way of motivating  themselves through life however some people  

like to push their regrets away they like to  try and forget about them because they see them  

as an obstacle something that gets in the way so  regret can be something that can push you forward  

to improve yourself or regret can be something  that holds you back and drags you down so i  

suppose it depends on how you deal with it how you  deal with something that you wish you had done or  

maybe something you wish you had not done have  you ever regretted something please let me know

out there in the world so what about you have you  ever regretted something you have done i suppose

when you're young you do tend to make mistakes  so perhaps there are things from your childhood  

maybe things from your early years maybe from  your teenage years or maybe when you you first  

ventured out into the real world by the way can  i just tell you something if you are very young  

and you think your life is hard now  trust me the real world is a harsh place  

so sometimes you might have to expect things to  go a little wrong so what about you have you ever  

regretted something i suppose yes hello reza no  one is infallible hence i think it is natural  

to regret sometimes thank you reza yes i suppose  i always think that regret is something that is  

subjective so everyone sees their own regret in a  different way so it is really how you deal with it  

i suppose you could also say it's a little bit  like failure so the way in which you deal with  

your failures in life so quite often we we might  say that failure and regret might sometimes be  

the same thing vittoria says it is not like me  to regret well i suppose you have a good attitude

and no rancor oh nice word so yes your regret  you don't feel any anger towards your your  

your past mistakes maybe perhaps  i think so here's a good one

zenek says i regret that i sold my bitcoins well  maybe perhaps you won't regret it you see because  

the value of bitcoin always goes up and  down and up and down it always fluctuates  

so as i understand at the moment the value of  bitcoin has actually fallen quite quite harshly  

and i think that is partly because of the attitude  of china towards bitcoin apparently china does not  

like bitcoin um maybe they see it as some sort of  threat to their their own currency which is the  

yuan yes i usually regret believing the  wrong people says hyundai and a new aden  

yes you can sometimes follow the advice  of a person who might give you the wrong  

advice and so you follow their advice but  unfortunately their advice is awful it's rubbish

so you end up making it making a mistake  because of it so yes maybe sometimes  

you can follow the wrong advice maybe a person  gives you some advice my mother a couple of  

years ago was offered a brand new bungalow  but one of her friends told her not to do it  

and i think that was a mistake you see so my  mother took the advice of her friend who said  

no no don't go into that new house no  you must not move stay where you are  

but i think the advice was actually bad advice so  i think my mother would have been much better off  

if she had taken the offer so so there is a  good example of that giving a little bit of  

my personal life away there i love doing that  have you ever regretted something you have done  

marshmallow says i regretted that i once took  a cake i took a cake prepared by my sister  

oh i see well of course sometimes regret comes  with guilt perhaps you've done something that  

you shouldn't maybe you've been caught doing  something you should not you see and sometimes  

regret can come with guilt you feel guilty  about something you feel regret because you were  

caught doing something wrong maybe that's the  reason why hello sunshine sunshine is here  

nice to see you back as well victoria ah this is  an interesting point victoria says but mr duncan  

we don't know what would have happened if she  had moved so who knows well one of the things  

about regret sometimes is you don't actually know  what the alternative would have been because you  

can't so quite often when you look back in time  or you look at the things you've done in the past  

sometimes you might wish that you had done  something differently however it might  

actually have the opposite effect but you  don't know you see you don't know because  

you didn't do it you didn't do it it's a little  bit like something called the butterfly effect  

the butterfly effect is a belief that even  the smallest instance or moment or action  

can have a long lasting or a big effect on  everything around it so even a small moment of  

time or a decision can change your life completely  so sometimes regret is a waste of time because

the alternative thing may have also been a bad  choice sometimes there are only bad choices  

that you can make so we don't always make good  choices and we don't always make bad choices but  

sometimes all of the choices that we have might  actually be bad choices it's very interesting  

this is a very deep conversation we are having  here talking of things that are deep we have mr  

steve coming a little bit later on we are going to  talk about regret again because well i think maybe  

the united kingdom at the moment  is regretting their choice of entry  

for the eurovision song contest last night did you  see it unfortunately the uk did not do very well  

it did not mr steve is coming soon we are going  to take a look in the garden because guess what  

guess what is back it has returned once more i  am so happy to see it once again yes look at that  

so there is something that i filmed last night in  the garden just before i went live and you can see  

the rhododendron rhododendron that is what that  particular flower is called it is a beautiful  

plant and this particular one has lovely pink  flowers look at those flowers aren't they lovely  

very nice so i was quite excited last night  to see not only the sheep and the lambs but  

also the rhododendron is starting to come into  bloom and this year there are many flowers coming  

on this particular plant look at that it is the  most magnificent i really do like the rhododendron

it really just brighten up the garden i think what  about you are there any plants coming out in your  

garden any flowers coming into bloom at the moment  maybe i notice at the back of the house also the

i can't remember what it's called i'll remember  in a minute there is a lovely yellow tree that has  

beautiful flowers that comes out every year and  i'm sure i will remember what it is in a moment  

how strange my mind just went  blank mr duncan you get no points

what's it all about as i lie here in solitude on  this giant rock hurtling through space on such  

a beautiful day as i look up at that glowing  ball of gas that keeps us all alive and well  

on this little blue pebble i can't help but  wonder what's it all about why are we here  

these existential thoughts rattle in my head again  and again keeping me from my nocturnal slumber  

as one by one my brain cells glow white  hot with the wonders that i behold

here we are at lesson number 33 which also happens  to be my imaginary age yes for today only i am 33.

anyway i can't lie here all  day whispering about nothing  

as we have a very busy full english lesson  to get on with which will start around about

i love talking about british traditions and  customs so today i would like to tell you about  

one that has been very popular for many years  over time we often buy things that seem useful  

at the time but eventually they become unused and  unwanted however there is a way of selling your  

old items in person and sometimes you might make  a little bit of money as well you can sell your  

second hand items to someone who needs them if  something is second hand it means that it has been  

used it is pre-owned it is not new  you can sell your unwanted items at a  

car boot sale this is a place where people turn  up and sell items from the boots of their cars  

there are many car boot sales that take place  here in the uk they often happen at the weekend  

then there is a jumble sale things that are  unwanted or secondhand are sold at a jumble sale  

a jumble sale is often held to raise money for  charity the word jumble means old and unwanted  

as well as mixed up and messy old unwanted items  can be described as knickknacks odds and ends  

bric-a-brac jumble and even junk there are  shops that specialize in second-hand items  

you might buy a second-hand car a car that  has been pre-owned and not new is second hand

it's now time for another buzz word a  buzz word is a word or phrase that is  

used during a certain period of time or  is generally popular today's buzzword is  

shaming this particular word is not new but  it is often used in phrases that have become  

prominent the word shame means to feel upset or  distraught over some negative aspect of your life  

or because of the way you feel about yourself you  feel self-conscious about something we often use  

shaming with the state of being a certain way one  group of people might accuse another of shaming  

them by the things they say or do overweight  people might feel fat shamed because of their size  

they are made to feel uncomfortable about being  fat so fat shaming is the action of ridiculing  

or placing guilt on the overweight another one is  poverty shaming which is the action of ridiculing  

or using a person's poverty for entertainment or  exploitation a poor person might be berated or  

shamed for being poor this form of shaming is  seen by some as embarrassing and exploitative  

the suffix shaming can be added to any state that  is held up as a way not to live poverty shaming  

fat shaming body shaming parental shaming  or internet shaming are all seen as types  

of social humiliation by those affected  by the negative attention they bring

here are two english words that both have positive  meanings and can shape a person's life forever  

the words are inspire and aspire firstly the word  inspire means to fill someone with the urge or  

ability to do something quite often the thing in  question is creative something you see or hear  

inspires you to do something yourself you feel  inspired by the thing you saw you feel the urge  

to do something similar or to go off on your own  course and create something unique and individual  

the action of another person might inspire  you to do the same thing you feel emboldened  

i like that word to embolden is to give confidence  and encouragement through action you might  

describe inspiration as a type of enlightenment  you feel inspired which encourages you to take  

action i attended a business seminar last weekend  and now i feel inspired to start my own company  

that beautiful sunset has inspired me to start  painting again then there is the word aspire  

which describes the feeling of bettering yourself  you see a place where you would like to be in  

the future with a better job a better house or  perhaps a more comfortable lifestyle these are  

the things a person might aspire to you might say  that the urge which comes from feeling aspiration  

is what pushes us forward to better ourselves  you aspire towards a goal or an objective  

ambition and hope can be the driving forces  that help you realize your dreams for the future  

you can be inspired to aspire i saw a lovely  village on tv last night which is the place  

i'd like to live one day to dream and aspire is  what we all do sometimes those hopes and dreams  

are big and appear out of reach but if you can  imagine something then there is no reason why  

it can't be achieved it all depends on you to  inspire is to give someone a spark of creativity  

to aspire is to think positive dream big  and most importantly of all never give up

and there it was one of my full english lessons

hello hello everyone would you like to know  mr duncan do you want some applause go on

they call him mr steve well you do anyway and  lots of other people do as well how are you  

today mr duncan i would be much better i would  be much better if you didn't shout in my ear  

i'm not shouting mr duncan i'm just alive and uh  and very glad to be here today i must say because  

you have saved me coming on here today i was in  the garden and i needed a break i'm always in the  

garden uh but i feel a bit tired today why tired  was it was it because you went to see your mother  

that might have been something to do with it but  no i can imagine that being very tiring i think  

it's when i came back which i i got a big surprise  last night i drove back took me about hour and 50  

minutes to drive back from my mother's okay lovely  to see her it was after more than six months  

yeah because of all the lockdowns um so finally  able to go and see her uh but when i came back  

i was just reversing back up into the driveway  okay and there i was confronted with mr duncan  

pointing a camera at me i must admit i was not  expecting that no i was live last night i did  

a special live stream for for around one hour  whilst the sheep and the lambs were out at the  

back of the house and i was waiting patiently for  steve to return from his mother's and then just  

before the live stream ended mr steve came back  and you were filming me i've never been filmed  

it was like it was like being on some kind of  reality tv show it was a bit like being famous  

is that big brother yeah i was like the paparazzi  swarming around mr steve's car trying to get a  

photograph of him so how many how many millions  of people were watching at the time mr duncan  

so there weren't millions unfortunately  i think we had about at the peak maybe

35. well just it just goes to show i'm not famous  yet no well the thing is it isn't about fame you  

see if you want to be well known on youtube you  have to annoy people you have to annoy certain  

people and then other people will come and  defend you or maybe if you mention something  

that will divide opinion and then everyone will  keep coming back to find out what the other  

side of the argument are saying so that's one  of the ways i i have been doing something very  

interesting over the past few days i've been  watching a lot of content from people on youtube  

that i don't normally watch and it is  interesting to see how often the viewers  

are actually manipulated by the creators on  youtube they stage things arguments situations  

just to get attention from the viewers and then  more and more people will become interested  

so i think one of the problems with with us is  sometimes we we just we we don't really divide  

any opinions right okay mr duncan we're going to  talk about we're going to get right into religion  

that's what we're going to do politics religion  everything well if you remember a few weeks ago  

we were talking about the royal family yes  and i did say something that i i do regret  

because we are talking about regret regret today i  noticed and there have been some very interesting  

comments and a few weeks ago i did make a  comment about people who are keen or are fans  

of the royal family here in the uk and i did say  that they they are stupid and i must admit i did  

regret saying that because not all of them  are stupid i mean some of them are idiots  

you see so some are stupid and some are idiots  so i'm very sorry about i really do regret saying  

that they're stupid because of course some are not  they are just idiots ah mr duncan that does not  

sound like an apology doesn't it no it sounds like  you are trying to court a controversy controversy  

there's a good phrase mr duncan yes get angry  court controversy it means you're you're you're  

asking trying to trying to look for uh controversy  if you caught something it means that you're sort  

of embracing it doesn't it yes you are well you  you are trying to encourage yes you are you are  

creating that that situation by doing something  that then creates another situation so you you  

are trying to manipulate and but can you believe  it and this is something i've never said before

a few years ago i actually had someone  from youtube who got in touch with me  

and they they wanted to give me some advice about  how to get more people watching can you believe  

and this this might get me taken off  by the way can you believe they told me  

youtube advised me and this was advice that they  gave to me they said you've got to get people  

fighting and disagreeing with each other they did  say that yes you've got to say things that divide  

opinion on your channel and then what will happen  is that will then create more interest in your  

channel because some people will be for the thing  you say and some people will be against it we  

don't have to do that we've got tomic to do that  for us yes but that's not the point i'm making  

though what i'm saying is that was advice from  youtube that was someone from youtube telling me  

to make you annoyed and angry and to get you  fighting with each other so you would all  

come back to my channel and watch my videos  and this is very apparent if you watch many  

youtube stars you will often see that they do  divide opinion between the people who subscribe  

to them and the more fighting the more divided the  audience becomes the more people will come back  

not only to watch the videos but also to read  the comments underneath so we've got to ramp  

ramp things up a bit ramp things up a bit mr  duncan create controversy around the world of  

english yes but the thing is i don't want  to do that because then i i wouldn't feel  

good about myself i wouldn't not if you did  it deliberately no well that's manipulate  

your viewers yes but that's the point i'm  just making no i know people are doing that  

and that's what youtube have actually told me to  do in the past can you believe youtube told me  

to to say things and do things that would make  everyone out there angry that was their advice

but anyway mr duncan we we don't want to we don't  want to youtube to come down on you with a ton  

of bricks well i think they already have true  true regret regret you might regret saying that  

yes about youtube now i don't want i don't want  to make things too negative today but we are going  

to have a look at my mum's empty house soon as  well because last weekend we had to say goodbye  

to my family home it's been my family home for for  53 years even though i moved out many years ago  

to to share my life with this  person that's something that  

one of us may regret yes having done i think both  of us regret it from time to time that's not true  

oh well let's just hope your mother isn't  actually watching no she isn't today because  

well she doesn't know does she that she no longer  has no wants to go well i wish he hadn't said that  

because i wasn't going to say that why did he why  did you actually say that because now because now  

you might be giving ammunition for someone  to actually try and get my mum to know that  

you see instead of just saying nothing they'd  struggle they'd struggle because they can't uh get  

in to see her can they no okay anyway that's where  she is at the moment we are sailing further and  

further away from the point that i'm making which  is we will be having a look at the empty house  

the house that we stripped bare everything is  gone now but the curtains the furniture the  

carpet we had to take it away ourselves last week  didn't we we had a great time last week cutting up  

some of the carpets and taking them to the local  rubbish dump oh we didn't really enjoy it um  

i was amazed how much i could actually get in  my car that we got virtually every carpet in the  

house it's quite strange because they were very  good quality carpets and um the people that uh are  

taking over your mum's house insisted well they  own the house that's right uh insisted that um  

we take out the carpet but anyway that's another  subject one of the interesting things is we went  

along to the local rubbish dump in stafford and  we were amazed at how many people were there  

throwing stuff away have you ever watched people  throwing things away throwing stuff and they they  

were coming in huge vans full of junk stuff that  they had and they were just throwing all this  

stuff away and one of the interesting things  afterwards we spoke to my sister and she says  

that sometimes she will she will see things that  people are throwing away and she will take them  

and and make them new she'll paint them or do  things with them so so i think that's quite  

interesting so there is a big actually a big  trade now in things that have been restored  

things that were junk oh yes and now they've been  restored well that's another subject all together  

but i think the throwaway society which  is one of the planets in such a bad  

state but i thought it was quite interesting  just watching all this stuff being thrown away  

but we were doing the same thing we were throwing  away some perfectly good carpet from my mother's  

house some of them were perfectly good most of  them weren't yes anyway you had to do that that  

wasn't a choice no that's it but it's interesting  it's interesting it's interesting anyway we will  

be taking a look at my mother's empty house a  little bit later maybe i will shed a little tear  

so what's happening on the live chat mister lots  of people have made comments about things they  

regret i was quite interested bearing in mind a  certain asset class has plummeted uh last week  

if anyone is interested in investing and follows  investing uh the world of crypto currencies  

has undergone a bit of a shock last week um if you  follow it i mean i follow it i don't you know i'm  

not we're not going to talk about investments  but you know about what we invested or don't  

invest in anything no okay then so what's the  point you're making point i'm making is that uh  

i can't pronounce your name i'm sorry z-d-e-n-e-k  regret selling bitcoin yes uh because there is  

something that has plummeted in value i mean it's  one of those areas of investment that you know you  

don't get involved in if you're only only the  brave and people who are quite willing to take  

the ups and downs of of a new asset class if you  want to call it that okay uh would get involved in  

so i mean it's going it was i think it was forty  thousand dollars now it's going back down to 30.  

but yes regretting selling bitcoin but you  probably won't regret selling it i mean you could  

i mean if you were adventurous you could buy back  in now buy the dip as they say you know who knows  

that everyone's forecasting that it'll be worth a  million dollars in ten years time i wouldn't take  

it i wouldn't take any notice of anyone because  as i always this is always the point i make  

all of the experts all of the people that say that  they are knowledgeable none of them saw the crash  

of 2008 coming none of them not one no no wait  there i'm trying to get to the end of my sentence  

not one of them said oh oh hello yeah the people  are being sold the mortgages and debt and they're  

getting into debt that they can't repay there's  going to be a big crash no one said that some  

people did because yes but not some people some  people did but not not the people that we all  

listen to when the tv is on when these people  are telling us what to think and say and buy  

they didn't say oh everything's going to go  a little bit crappy in 2008 they kept it to  

themselves well i think it's going to go a little  bit crappy as you say uh over the next few years  

anyway we are not financial experts i am no you're  not no i'm not watching six youtube videos if i  

was a financial expert mr duncan yes i would  be i would be driving a forward mustang well  

right now is that all well that's that's  all i want actually that doesn't seem like  

that's not going to show off your wealth that's  just going to say but that's all i want all i

steve i can't even see the land anymore i know  we're going off in a tangent we're so far out  

it's sea i the land has actually vanished off  at a tangent if you go off at a tangent horizon  

don't stay on the course of the  subject you were going to take  

and you go off at a tangent to divert to divert  well it's english i thought i would explain  

that phrase that's great i enjoyed that's  one of the best it's one of the best words

so today we're talking about regret is  there anything you regret mr steve besides  

well hooking up with me i don't really regret that  mr duncan at all i've had i've had many many many  

uh hours of happiness over the last 30 years no no  no well the thing is i am the sort of person that  

does get bogged down with regret yes you do you do  tend to hold on to things and this is what i said  

earlier there are two ways of looking at regret  it can push you forward because you learn from  

those mistakes or it can drag you down because you  keep thinking about them an intelligence said it  

made a good point earlier that that regret if you  regret something it's probably a good opportunity  

to learn something because the problem with regret  is you think oh i wish i'd done that but that's  

but that's hindsight is a wonderful thing ah isn't  it that's a good phrase that's a very different  

kettle of fish because hindsight is learning from  your past mistakes but you you hear this all the  

time when something bad happens and let's face  it over the past few years there have been many  

things that people have done in power that now  they regret but they say in in hindsight we would  

do it completely differently for example yes for  example i mean they don't teach financial acumen  

acumen financial knowledge okay or  expertise at school had they done that  

and somebody if somebody had said to me  right in school if there had been a class on  

how to make sure that when you reach you know  after 30 or 40 years you'll have enough money to  

retire on i mean it's very easy all you actually  basically need to do is save about 20 of your  

wages yes do it for 30 or 40 years and you'll  have loads of money and nobody tells you that  

when you did actually talk about this i know what  i'm just saying but you asked me what i regret so  

i regret not doing that but i don't really regret  it because i didn't have the knowledge at the time  

so it's hindsight yes you can you know had i had  that knowledge 40 years ago and ignored it i could  

say well it's my own fault i could still regret  it but i could say it's my own fault um so i don't  

really regret it so what do you what do you regret  what do i regret don't tell me what you don't  

regret what do i read well i don't know some of  the things i regret i'm not sure i want to repeat  

uh what you mean in front of millions of people  really was it was it your your life of crime  

do you regret that well you know i mean 10 years  in prison that was enough to set me no i'm only  

joking can you imagine being mr steve's mother  and finding out that sometimes he is a naughty  

boy can you imagine what colour mr steve's bottom  would have been it would have been cherry red  

like a sports car do i regret anything yes i  do but uh there are there are certain things  

that you don't want to share with people even  though they are your friends uh maybe one to one  

i may but you know to do with my personal  life we have flags of the world coming soon  

don't say that it's i think i think flags of the  world is a good idea today because of course last  

week's going he's cleaning out his oven okay so  that's obviously priority it's nice to see that  

okay tomic may well regret leaving yes later  we'll find out next week flags of the world  

is appropriate because last night it was  eurovision the eurovision song contest mr  

steve did you see it no because i was driving  well you no you weren't you were asleep  

on the sofa it was on last night oh was it that  late you were already back i was back and asleep  

and i suppose we should mention that the  united kingdom did not do very well in fact  

our score in the eurovision  song contest of this year was

no points for the united kingdom  we came last because we got  

no points absolutely nothing zilch nada  

ling so why do you think that was mr duncan you  could get controversial here well i'm not going to  

say why because i might be mentioning that later  on you see yeah you see saving that for later  

so we have flags of the world coming up and and  there are lots of european and eurovision as well  

so there was a little bit of controversy because  england or should i say the united kingdom which  

is the combination of england scotland wales and  northern ireland we came last we got nil point no  

points for our song i didn't like the song by  the way i did mention this earlier on but you  

have to have a certain type of song when you enter  eurovision and we always seem to get it wrong here  

even though we've won it five times maybe we don't  care anymore so we just put in whatever we want  

because we know even if we have the best song in  the world we probably wouldn't win because of the  

political yes anyway things that go on hold on  to that thought put a pin in it because we will  

be going back to that later on so we have all of  those lovely flags of the world coming up and then  

i can have a little sit down on the floor and  mr steve can massage my coccyx because we have  

the flags of the world and then after that we're  having a look at my mother's house it's all empty  

and lonely now because we had to clear it out in  fact tomorrow tomorrow at i think it's 12 o'clock  

the keys will be handed back and  the house will no longer be ours  

it's not fair that's life mr duncan it is  life that's life you see there is no point  

regretting those things more from us in a few  moments but right now it is three o'clock in the  

uk i don't know what time it is where you are it's  time to have a look at those flags of the world

has it finished are we back on mr  duncan have you turned the sound up  

i have turned the sound off good i'm not  i don't think tomic is going uh somebody  

said he was going but i think he's still  here he wants to stay and make sarcastic  

comments about my flags of the world uh  somebody said louis was going but i'm not  

sure whether louis is going or not no i'm not  taking any notice of what people say anymore no  

i think they're joking you see because of flanks  of the world oh i see because they know that they  

know that you hate it but i love flags of  the world i love to see those lovely flags  

all those lovely nations around the world  what you think that matters living in peace  

and harmony all the time they're always living  in peace and harmony all those countries  

there are no real borders around  the world everyone is one we are all  

human beings trying to make it through another  day the best way we can kindness humility

generosity all of these things flags of the  world brings everyone around the world together  

do you agree do you agree or not i went off  there by the way i actually went into a strange  

dreamlike state i noticed and so  did everybody else that's nice  

so last weekend we did something that was a  little sad well some people might say doing this  

is sad i hope we're not going to dwell too much mr  duncan no we're not going to dwell too much we're  

just going to have a quick look at my mum's  house now i must warn you now we have raised  

we have clay we have cleared the house it's  empty so it will look a little bit untidy because  

we had to tear up the carpets we had to take  everything away so here it is i can now show  

the house because we don't live there anymore  so it's pretty good really if we were still  

living there then maybe i would be worried even  though your mother doesn't actually know oh for  

god's sake can you stop saying that can  you just stop saying that well yes but  

the fact the fact is you've you've announced  it anyway so it's not like it's a secret well  

yeah but not today here it is then he's here's  the house that that we we said goodbye to that  

you grew up in this was the house that  was asked for 53 years but the landlord  

is going to take it back and that is happening  tomorrow and there it is there is the house  

where i grew up and no one has ever seen this  before i've never showed this before so this  

was last weekend i thought i would save a little  memory for myself as we go into the house where i  

spent a lot of my years as a little child running  in and out of the house and then into the living  

room although sadly all of the furniture all  of the carpets everything has gone it's empty  

now i'm starting to worry that my mum is sitting  there watching this well this is what i'm talking  

about and she's falling out of bed what if your  sister is there because sadly we know that your  

mother uh is not well enough to go no my my  mother is not watching the internet i i am 99.999  

percent sure so there it is there is the house  even though over the years it has changed a lot  

so around about 15 years ago it was modernized  and here are the stairs the stairs that my my  

mum used to go up and down and also i  used to play on these stairs as a kid  

i used to sit on these stairs and i would  make my own radio shows by recording them  

on tape and i would sit on those very stairs  as a child of course the carpets have now gone  

everything has been stripped and it is now  completely bare so it does look strange seeing  

my house strange strangely enough your sister was  born in the house wasn't she hmm yes my my younger  

sister unless alison was born here in in the room  that we're going to see in a moment this is my  

bedroom so this for many years was my bedroom  this is where i slept this is where i learned  

all of the realities of life really this  is where i used to spend a lot of my time  

sleeping and my mother would come in and say are  you getting out of that bed you big lazy lump  

nothing's changed then mr duncan because that's  what i have to say to you these days so there it  

is that's me closing the door on my bedroom for  the last time and here is my my parents bedroom  

but of course it's empty and this is the room  in which Alison my younger sister was born  

fascinating she was actually pushed into the  world in this very room you might also notice the  

the lovely taste of colour purple do people still  have purple walls i'm not sure mister i'm not sure  

so there it is there we go i  won't show any more because  

i think steve doesn't want to watch anymore  i think well i don't want you to get upset  

no i'm not upset and i don't want you know people  to think why are we watching this oh okay then  

it's gone now then come on then entertain us steve  well it's your show oh okay well it doesn't seem  

to be because you were telling me what to do yes  well it's of course it is sad but um you know  

that's life as we say your your mother can't  go back because sadly she's not well enough  

to look after herself so that's why that's had  to happen so do you regret showing that no good  

oh i don't regret it i think the only regret is is  you know it's i i don't regret it because i didn't  

show it oh okay then so what else are we talking  about today mr donald we are talking about regret  

all the time for the whole two hours you're  talking about regret well we were talking  

about it briefly and now and now we're going  to look at some words connected to it because  

we do have the sentence game coming up and we are  also going to take a look at mr steve's new grass  

fascinating well this show is  packed with excitement this week  

i've got to say we see we could be creating  arguments and fighting right now and there are  

many subjects we could talk about and you know  what they are out there you know what they are  

we know what they are and we could talk about  them but we're not going to because we don't  

want to divide my lovely viewership we don't want  you arguing with each other you see sergio says  

this is the epicentre where the big bang  happened it is yes literally everything started  

in that house if it wasn't for that house you  wouldn't be doing this now well strangely enough  

the strange thing is what is very strange is i  actually i was born somewhere else i was born  

in a hospital prematurely and the house that  we lived in before we actually shared with my  

great grandmother so she lived there as well  because at that time it was it was normal it  

was quite normal for elderly relatives to  live with the extended family it was very  

normal to do that and of course it is in lots of  other cultures still today but yes in the uk but  

the interesting things might the interesting thing  i want to mention is my great grandmother was  

psychic it's true well that's it rosa says did  you take something from the house mr duncan i  

have some lovely things that i took home with  me some things some one of them connected with  

your psychic grandmother yes well we haven't got  that here but my grandmother had psychic powers  

she used to give readings fortune telling and  one of the things she had was was a crystal ball  

and she used to make the crystal ball move around  her arm and it used to go around her shoulder  

and then down her other arm and people used to  come and she would sit for hours with all of these  

people giving reading their cards and you getting  in touch with the spirit world and we have that  

crystal ball not here but it it has been in  our family home for many years so of course  

when we cleared the house last week one  of the things that we had to move was this  

crystal ball and you were fascinated by it it  was a bit spooky yes so there is a crystal ball  

that my great grandmother used to use during  her psychic moments you've often spoken about  

this yes and i i assume that the crystal ball  was going to be some giant ball about this big  

because when you see television enactments of sort  of gypsies and people sort of reading fortunes  

you mean clairvoyance clairvoyance they've  always got these gena they've been peering  

into these giant crystal balls so i expected it  to be why did you go for gypsies i don't know  

sorry if i if i've offended any gypsies of  watching it's just a strange jump to make  

okay clairvoyance then well i think  well i don't know if i'm incorrect and  

i don't know i just associate readings and  crystal balls but gypsies i don't know why  

but maybe that's prejudice there we go  here's some controversy mr duncan you  

wanted controversy well first of all my great  grandmother wasn't a gypsy but she wasn't now

but that's just for television and movies  crystal balls are always large on tv  

and in movies because they have to register on  on the screen but actually many crystal balls  

are very small they're actually quite tiny so  the one that my great grandmother had was only  

about this large and it was just a small it was  probably i would say it was not much larger than  

a small orange yes and yes it's very heavy though  and that it is actually the crystal ball that my  

great-grandmother used to use in her seances and i  suppose if it was a big crystal ball it would have  

been too heavy to i don't know how i wonder if  that is a trick or whether you you know there is  

something in this psychic psychic-ness what do you  think what do you think she was using blue tack  

or strings well i don't know i  i assume it that it is a trick  

yes i think i don't know maybe your grandmother  had special powers did she ever predict anything  

that was correct well she said in around about  2020 there would be a big pandemic no not really  

but that would be amazing wouldn't it if she'd  done that i've always noticed that fortune tellers  

and clairvoyance never tell us anything that's  important i mean first of all i could name 911 for  

example that might have been handy for all those  people out there who were clairvoyant and can see  

into the future it would have been nice to  have had a heads up about that and also the  

stock market crash in 2008 that would have been  nice as well all you clairvoyants out there  

or you psychic people because you could have  you could have you could have converted all your  

investments to cash at the peak and uh and then  put it back into cash when it was at the bottom  

you'd have made a fortune yes i'm sure lots  of people did but it's strange isn't it so  

and next week's lottery numbers come on if you  really can see the future and you are really  

clairvoyant and you have this power to see into  the mists of the future then please can you tell  

me what next week's lottery ticket numbers are i  mean come on give us some useful things not not  

do you know someone called mary and she had an  ingrowing toenail and she used to keep a dog  

called boris no this is not interesting  please give us real things that have an  

actual impact on the world as you can tell steve  i don't believe in all of this personally so i've  

never seen my great grandmother do any of those  things even though i was living there at the time  

so maybe you never saw it yourself i never because  i was only about three years old oh right so i was  

a just a very small child so i wasn't sitting  there in the room watching it yeah i think  

she dropped her crystal ball on your head  maybe maybe you might explain maybe my head  

was spinning around in the corner of the room  like like in the exorcist the thing is people

like that people are looking for answers in an  uncertain world yes aren't they and so quite  

often if somebody can give them those answers  even if they seem convincing then you might want  

to believe them yes that's it anyway uh because  you know there are very few certainties in the  

world no that's it but i'm talking too but i'm  talking about people who say they have the power  

now in this current day and age but clearly they  don't because if they did they could have really  

hurricanes volcanoes earthquakes come on can you  please use your clairvoyant skills for something  

that's actually useful instead of guessing  the colour of your great grandmother's hat  

well i people just want comforting i think  sometimes yes uh and they want answers to  

things which we can't give answers to sometimes  uncertainties of life someone just said victoria  

says the typical story of lady diet anna  princess diana her fortune teller could not  

see her untimely death that's it you see they said  oh uh by the way don't don't go into any tunnels  

on august the 31st 1997 don't  go anywhere near tunnels  

okay because that would that would be  useful see i i blame clairvoyance for that  

it's your fault that that happened because  all of you with your psychic power none of you  

stepped in you let it happen in fact they  should send all clairvoyance to prison  

for never telling us all the bad stuff that  happened they should they should all be in jail  

in a way you could say you could i mean if you  were going to be generous in your in your comments  

about clairvoyance you could say that they are  performing a function no listen mr duncan if you  

if you could you know as long as you're  not ripping people off too much but  

but a lot of people go to clairvoyance  because they don't necessarily believe  

what the clairvoyant is telling them okay they're  going because they just want some comfort they  

want somebody to say something and the the  person that is doing the reading the clairvoyant  

is probably very good at assessing your character  they're also very good at getting money from from  

people who are gullible yes that's true but at  the same time almost maybe performing almost  

like a religious dare i say a priest steve said  that you would go to would give you comfort  

for things which you are upset about things which  you can't explain maybe somebody's died in the  

family and you don't understand what's going  on and you know will you ever see them again  

and you know clairvoyant like a priest may provide  some kind of comfort i mean the priest is going to  

be free well it might not be free because you'd  probably expect some kind of donation to the  

church when you left but yeah i don't think you  necessarily go and believe maybe some people do  

but it's comfort that sometimes people want  i think but from my point of view the claim  

is the important part not the people who go there  you are claiming something that's really big it's  

a big thing to say i can see everything that's  going to happen i get messages from the future  

and things that i can i can see from the future  and also the past but but but obviously they  

can't they can't because they would be telling  us they would be warning us of all the terrible  

things that keep happening well thomas makes a  point of a valley value valuable point that they  

take advantage of gullible lost people yes well  you know you could say the same about religion  

but controversial controversial um i  was going to say you've heard it here  

first but it wouldn't be the  first time um but yes i mean

it is a very uncertain world it's dangerous  there's lots of dangers lots of uncertainties  

and sometimes people want answers even though  there are no answers uh life isn't fair is it i  

mean i think life is not fair for some people  it appears to be fair and for some people it  

appears to be very unlucky but i think that  is all it's down to it's just probabilities  

some people seem to have a charmed life maybe it's  because they make wise choices in life i don't  

know it's just fate that's it it's it's a little  bit like spinning a wheel on a roulette table  

you can't say oh i'm going to get that number  definitely you are just throwing the dice  

spinning the wheel and that's it  that's all any of us can really do  

any of us that's all we can do that  all we can do is throw the dice  

spin the wheel and see what happens what you don't  when it comes to your health of course oh yeah you  

have absolutely well you do have some control yes  i mean everybody knows what is healthy and what's  

unhealthy we don't have to talk about that but in  terms of your genetics you have no control over  

whether you've got a faulty heart because you've  inherited that from your mother or your father  

you've got no control over that at all that's  it um so there are things you can control and  

there are most things i think it would be fair to  say that most things you can't control but we do  

like to think that we can control it and there is  some force moving us around like pieces on a on a  

chessboard but it's just as i said it's that wheel  of fate you spin the wheel you throw the dice  

you don't know what's going to come up maybe you  will be lucky maybe you will be unlucky steve  

regret is a thing that i think is quite  interesting as a subject and we will we are  

going to look at that in a minute however a couple  of weeks ago in fact i think nearly four weeks ago  

remember planting some seeds in the garden oh yes  some grass seed well you might be surprised to see  

what has happened with mr steve's grass seed so  here it is two weeks ago so this is two weeks  

ago steve okay yes don't panic no two weeks ago  so here it is two weeks ago would you like to  

see it now you are not going to believe what  it looks like now here it comes are you ready  

the excitement is just look at that mr duncan  that is it that is now i've worked a miracle  

that is mr steve's grass right now it has  grown we've had lots of rain haven't we  

well it's been i i that you couldn't have had  more perfect weather for putting seed down  

yes growing grass yes or turf i could have put  turf down okay so in case people aren't sure what  

turf is or i haven't heard of that word  before okay if you want to have a nice lawn  

so you can clear the ground and put seed down  like like i've done which takes um you know  

maybe a year to establish itself properly or  you can buy something called turf which is where  

the grass has grown already okay and then it's cut  and then you just lay down this sort of it's about  

that thick yes it's just pieces of earth with  grass growing on where the grass has already grown  

somebody's done that for you and then it comes in  little squares and then you just lay it down on  

the ground yeah and then water it so that you've  got like an instant lawn so it's a bit like taking  

grass that's already grown with also the soil and  then planting it somewhere it's not like having a  

hair transplant t-u-r-f turf um yes but that's  more expensive so grass foliage um and that's  

why we say surf and turf is it surf and turf  it's fish it's fish meals with normally garnish  

on the side normally green things vegetables  or some sort of green garnish turf and surf

funny comment from sergio there yes okay  but yes it's not difficult to grow grass  

but you have to look after it even with turf  people put turf down and then ignore it but  

you you've got to water it for weeks and weeks and  weeks otherwise it dies off that sea that cost me  

virtually nothing if i bought turf to cover that  area it would have probably cost me 200 pounds  

to cover that area that i've done whereas  the seed has probably cost me about 50 pence  

yes and we're not going to be walking all  over it no so it's down at the bottom end of  

the garden so it's going to take a year to  establish it'll be fine so congratulations  

thank you yes congratulations  to mr steve for your amazing  

grass i regret that i didn't do that five  years ago yes oh i see so words connected  

to regret we are going to go through these quickly  and then we have the sentence game you have passed

some words connected with regret regret i've had  a few but then again too few to mention i've lived  

a life that's full i've travelled each and every  highway and more much more than this i did it my

famously and lots of people have sung that  song of course i think shirley bassey did  

it shirley bassey did it of course but  i think the most famous version is who  

that old crooner from america why are you asking  me frank sinatra frank old blue eyes i think he  

is uh associated quite famously with that song  and the mafia well no i'm just talking about  

two things that let me rephrase my question  that song is is is closely associated with frank  

sinatra that version that's it and the mafia the  man i'm just talking about the song you may regret  

talking about the mafia mr duncan because  they could be watching yes and they think  

that you're talking about them in a disparaging  way i don't want to end up disparaging yes okay  

steve there's a word yes it is a word this  is an english you know it's one of the best  

disparaging it means you say something  bad about somebody okay or an organization  

well you are you are running someone down running  them down talking badly disparaging could be  

correct it could be incorrect so just to clarify  frank sinatra had nothing to do with the mafia  

it wasn't the reason why he became famous and  he didn't force people at gunpoint to give him  

an opening into show business none  of those things happened at all okay  

so i would rather not be sleeping with the  fishes tonight if you don't mind mr mafiosa  

so regret well i suppose you might regret  something i might regret saying that just  

you regret something i suppose also the feeling  of doing something you now wish you had not or  

the feeling of not doing something you  now wish you had ah you see so regret  

can work in two ways it can be something you  did but you wish you didn't do or hadn't done  

or something that you didn't do  and you wish that you had done  

so it can be some sort of decision some sort of  thing that happens some event or maybe something  

you did something you said to have a strong desire  to change an event from your past might come from  

regret you wish you could go back and do something  again can you hear the lambs in the sheep  

i can they may regret making that sound because i  might go outside and shoo them away okay then uh  

i thought you're gonna say shoot them paulo says  i regret not having found out about this channel  

before oh but that's you know um you found out  now so you can go back and look at all mr duncan's

you can't change something that can't be altered  might bring about the feeling of regret for  

example you might say i regret the things i said  to you i regret all of those things so you feel  

sad about something you did and now you  regret it so this says move ahead the past  

is the past that's it you can you can regret but  then if you you there's nothing you can apologize  

to you know if you do something you regret say  you would say something offensive to somebody  

you punch somebody or or something i mean all you  can do because you can't change the past is to  

if it's appropriate apologize and then move on  you can't keep dwelling on the past no well even  

if you apologize even if you clear the whole thing  up you still might regret it so it's a thing that  

lives it it's a bit like something eating  away it at the inside of your brain it's there  

chewing into your memories and the regret  can take over it can be something that that  

you never quite get over it depends well it  depends what it is how serious that thing is  

i mean i would imagine most people in  prison probably regret the action that  

they did that led to them going to prison not  necessarily i i would say the majority would  

i don't think there are many people who actually  commit crimes deliberately so that they can be  

sent to prison but there probably are a few uh  because you know maybe they prefer being in prison  

for life in prison yeah there's a lot of perks but  i would imagine generally most people would regret  

that prison prison can be good you know i'm sure  there are things that that you know can be good  

in prison what i mean you never you never have  you never have to worry about not having a meal  

true and and you will you always have a friend  there's always someone who is right behind you  

and that they're willing to to stick up for you  at any moment that you need them you do have to  

move on i mean if you know yes i suppose if you  committed a crime and you serving 20 years in  

prison for that crime okay i would probably think  that most people would well they probably regret  

being caught well yes not not regretting the  crime probably i would imagine but if you're  

you're the prisoner that is you you're trying  to reform a prisoner then maybe eventually  

uh you probably would regret the crime but i would  imagine initially you just regret being caught  

that you were you know you didn't do enough to to  uh not be detected in the fact that you committed  

that crime so anyway i don't know but i mean  i'm only mentioning prison because that is the  

that's the most obvious thing a lot but i mean  a lot of people probably get away with crimes  

and don't don't regret it at all i don't know  no well that's the one thing i am sure here  

we go i'm very sure you don't know come on  yeah oh that's very good steve if you could  

actually yes well i've heard this before i've  heard this before intelligence says that uh  

uh well it's a bit like that that if when you're  in prison everything is predictable therefore safe  

yes so it's a bit like you know some people like  that certainty i just said that everyday certainty  

in life i've just literally said that well it's  like people who are in the army or in the forces  

in the army that is a very structured life or  voting for a dictator and when they leave the  

army they find life very difficult sometimes  because life is predictable steve as much as  

i'm enjoying your ted talk i i think we should i'm  going to start my own youtube channel mister keep  

saying that and i'm going to give worldly advice  here's a good one okay steve i don't want you to  

i don't want to tell you to shut up but i may have  to so there are many ways of expressing a regret  

for example you might be waiting for that train  to take you to to work and then suddenly you hear

we regret to inform you that your train  service has been cancelled due to bad weather
