mmm it sure is everybody we are all together again

it's Sunday it's a fun day it's a great day to learn English I really think so

so here we go again it is not a bad day today

here in the UK quite cool in fact it's freezing it's so cold I've actually got

the heating on at the moment so that's how cold it is right now here in the UK

it is freezing and as you can see yes autumn is definitely here in fact today

it feels a little bit like winter dare I say hi everybody

oh there you are this is mr. duncan in england how are you today are you okay I

really really hope so are you happy well are you happy I really hope so

here we go again it is Sunday Sunday the 28th of October 2018 and it's mr. Duncan

that's me by the way for those who are wondering and we are live on YouTube as

we approach the end of October I can't believe how quickly this year is going

by it's just whizzing by faster than the

speed of light that's what I think anyway lots of things coming up today if

you haven't already noticed you may have noticed that shall we just have a look

at the thumbnail where is it I'm trying to find the thumbnail where is it

come on oh there it is I love this a lot of people have been saying mr. Duncan we

don't want to see you dead why are you in the coffin well that is a clue to

what today's live stream is all about and of course we are coming towards

Halloween as well so I thought we would mix the two things together so Halloween

is occurring on the 31st of October so I

thought today we would talk a little bit about that and also we would choose a

subject to talk about maybe a subject that many people don't want to discuss

or think about but we are going to do it today today's subject is death do you

fear death death is something that everyone sees in a different way

depending on your own personal point of view so that's something we are talking

about today words and expressions connected to the subject of death I'm

sure there must be some people who are thinking mr. Duncan you shouldn't be

talking about that but what I like to do between you and me this is something

that I've been very proud of over the past 12 years yes 12 years I try to

cover subjects that other people don't want to talk about and this particular

subject is one that I wanted to talk about many years ago in fact I made a

lesson all about it so today we are talking about death I know it's not a

very nice subject and a lot of people might complain about it but I think it

is a good subject to talk about we will be looking at words and expressions to

do with the word death and being dead also we will take a look at some words

connected directly with death just to get you in the mood here is an excerpt

from one of my English lessons where I talk all about that very subject

humans are mortal we only have a certain amount of time in this world the word

mortal comes from the latin word mortalis which literally means to die

you see this word used in mortuary a place where dead bodies are kept

mortality the event of death or death on a large scale the mortality rate from

the flood is 20,000 a dead person can generally be described as a corpse body

or the deceased they can also be informally described as

a stiff although this term can cause great offense that sounds like a

squirrel I hope it's okay

after any animal dies it will begin to rot or decompose the cells will break

down and be absorbed for example into the ground

humans are organic we are made of living material so once we die so do all the

cells which make up our whole body

so what happens here after you die normally your body will be taken to a

cold place for storage such as a mortuary most large hospitals have a

more tree in them if your death cannot be explained then someone will examine

your body on both the outside and inside this is called a post-mortem which means

after death this procedure can also be called an autopsy the person who carries

out the examination is called a pathologist or coroner the ceremony

following a person's death is called a funeral these can be conducted very

differently between countries and cultures the body is placed in a wooden

box called a coffin and then taken to a religious place where a service normally

follows after this event there are two options the body can be buried

underground in a grave or tomb or it can be burned in a cremation ceremony these

days this is done in a special building called a crematorium

the belief of what happens after you die varies deeply between many groups of

people some believe that our life force or spirit floats away to another place

some believe that we are reborn on earth as a different creature and some believe

that the feeling of being dead is the same as before we are born just so there

it is a taste of what is to come on today's live English stream

things that make you feel afraid there are many words that can describe

different types of fear we might talk about that later on if we have time

don't forget keeping up the theme of today mr. Steve we'll be here for those

that way it is cold though so maybe Steve is right because it's freezing

today just to show you how cold it is today we actually have the wood burner

actually put some more wood on the fire because it would appear that that there

isn't much wood on the fire though it looks like the fire is about to go out

there is something that I've forgotten all about well there are two things

first of all the clocks have changed we have gone back one hour so for those who

haven't tuned in yet or maybe you think I'm too late or too early between you

and me I find it very confusing when the clocks change so during the summer we

put the clock forward and during the winter months we put the clock back so

last night we put the clock back one hour so for those who aren't sure what

is going on as far as the time is concerned don't worry you're not the

only one because it confuses me as well to be honest with you I have no idea why

we do it I have no idea I don't know what difference it makes but for those

who are a little bit confused by what time it is it is now coming up to 20

past 2:00 here in the UK that is the time right now on a Sunday afternoon

Wednesday we will be broadcasting a special edition of late and live to

that is the surprise 12 years I really can't believe it on Wednesday we will be

taking a look at some of my early lessons also on Wednesday we will take a

look at some things that you've never seen before and here is something that

I'm going to show now and this is a video clip that you've never seen before

trust me you have never seen this I have never shown these video clips to anyone

anywhere and here it is so this is one of the first-ever video clips that I

filmed but I never uploaded it to YouTube but can you guess where I am

many big cities they have cycle lanes where people can ride their bicycles

been doing so for over 12 years in fact we are going to reach the 12th

anniversary on Wednesday I can't believe it I really can't

talking of English lessons we are now going to take a look at one of my full

English lessons and this is one that if I hope it's here is it here I hope it is

think I've put it in oh yes there it is I found it it's going very well don't

you think here is one of my full English lessons and this is one that many people

request to be shown again this is the time when mr. Lomax

do you want to know what I'm doing here I am about to change a light bulb the

bulb inside this light fitting has blown it has burned itself out it has come to

the end of its life it is no longer working the bulb has gone in this sense

the word gone means expired the bulb is dead so I will now replace the blown one

with one that works first I need to make sure that the electricity is turned off

so I don't electrocute myself because that would really spoil my day and make

this lesson very short have you noticed how many types of light fittings there

are nowadays some push in some screwing and as for their shapes symbols are

spherical symbols are curly and some are straight and long we measure the light

output of bulbs in watts this particular bulb is 40 watts it is a 40 watt bulb ok

it's time to change that lightbulb I must unscrew the bulb carefully so as

not to break it

that's strange somebody's turn the power supply to the

lights off first I need to make sure that the

electricity is turned on the electricity is turned on okay so I don't electrocute

myself electrocute myself electrocute myself I think I will turn that back on

different clothes on I was wearing a grey tank top over a purple shirt now

continuity the clothes I wore in the previous shots do not match the ones I'm

wearing now they have changed this is bad

continuity the flow of this sequence has been broken by this mistake if you

sometimes see bad continuity in TV shows and movies this is mainly caused by the

fact that each shot is done at different times or in completely different places

so sometimes it is possible for them not to match continuity errors can be seen

in all types of productions from the low-budget movie right up to the

multi-million dollar blockbuster and there it was an excerpt from one of my

full English lessons

it's a lovely sunny day it is cold but there are things to be done in the

yes what I've I've been putting in logs all over the place today not just in the

fire there's no answer to that well that's a euphemism a euphemism

beforehand before we start take a look at this it looks like a very innocent

can you believe that this particular biscuit caused a lot of conversation

strict diet at the moment you should limiting yourself to no more than I

would say 1,500 calories a day if you are to lose some of this pork around

your belly I have well you see two weeks ago you announced and we weighed you

that you would be trying to lose about a stone between now and Christmas okay and

have did you weigh yourself last week no you did not wear yourself out I'm not

just that I didn't weigh myself today no but I was supposed to and this morning

let's face it mr. Duncan this week has brought two tubs of ice cream of which

you've eaten half yes but I wouldn't have eaten it if you hadn't have brought

it but and lots of chocolates it to the get to the point then this morning I

took mr. Duncan a cup of tea first thing in the morning what we're talking 8:30

mr. Duncan were we it was 8:30 this morning dirty Tokyo cup of tea

it was 8:30 at the Swan now we're telling the story it was 8:30 thus what

I'm just trying to sort of put my side over as well because there are two sides

no there aren't as anyone has to I'm right I'm always right mr. Duncan you

know I'm always right so mr. Duncan bearing in mind what do

you normally have at 8:30 away 2 o'clock on a weekend you start with breakfast

mr. Duncan went downstairs and got three biscuits I said I'm gonna have those

with my tea have you ever heard of somebody eating three biscuits in the

morning with their tea before they've even had breakfast particularly if

they're on a diet a strict diet I was very angry but in my defense

these are biscuits that are designed to go into your tea yes at 11 o'clock mr.

Duncan all four o'clock in the afternoon not before breakfast who says though who

has biscuits sorry in bed before you have breakfast well buddy wherever do

not look like people are on a diet I'm getting angry I'm supposed to be helping

you get healthy mr. Duncan and you are defying me defying me you are you are

you are laughing in my face by getting biscuits and eating them in bed with tea

that's a very long queue bother anyway what do you think should mr. Duncan if

he's on a diet be eating biscuits at any time let alone let alone before

breakfast but look there's just a very innocent I was chastising you mr. day

okay yes we've got those story now anyway that's the story now it's my turn

to talk but look here is my side of the story it's just a very innocent biscuit

can you see is very innocent calorie filled biscuit the other biscuit is

innocent now normally I don't have breakfast so that so this was was a kind

of breakfast before I started beef before I started preparing today have

charge of the bit okay then yes you've made your point it's my turn now

sometimes I have to speak you know not on my show we consume chat wake up we

can soon change that okay well I have to reel you in a little bit today

you were quite mad last week I don't know what was going on

so mr. Steve and myself we went for a lovely walk yesterday and we decided to

stop Easter a quick change of subject mr. Duncan we decided to stop at a very

special place and mr. Steve decided to have a little sleep

chemicals in the garden cutting off moss I think you've been a bit you been

sniffing the chemicals no I think that is very ancient I bet that's hundreds of

years old and somebody died and they were buried in that and there would have

been a big slab over the top let's have a look and surprisingly enough whoever

was in there must have been quite tall and they're normally very short no but

they in olden days yes but I was going to get in but I realized that I was too

tall but of course because you're very short you're very small I'm five foot

nine and a half mr. Donnelly yeah that is not short that is above average male

well you are that height when you're wearing your mother's high-heeled shoes

but normally not so there's mr. Steve and this is in much Wenlock but but I

still can't believe you did that I still can't believe you actually

climbed into that casket could we have been said to be desecrating a grave well

but desecrating that means that you're destroying it so there isn't anyone in

there no it was there I mean it was just there I mean it's asking for somebody to

lie down there wasn't there wasn't a body already in there what happened to

the body about rabbits and grave robbers have taken the original body out you

know what I think I think it must have been a spare one spare one and they've

put it there but I'm sure that you're not the first person to do

I'm sure other people have climbed into that same thought about it many times

before we're talking about death death death not a very nice subject this is a

subject that a lot of people don't like to talk about or think about but it's

part of life as far as I'm concerned it's just a natural part of living just

like birth and living breathing seeing hearing eating and dying it's all part

of nature so today we are talking about death I thought very quickly we would

have a look at some words connected directly and also you have some words as

well don't got a lot of words that are a surprising number of words idioms and

phrases with the word death in it there are made and it took me a couple of

hours this morning disordered or that mr. Duncan I want to do a lot more in

the garden and before you came on life I'm glad you told us that ah but there

you go yes I'm so glad to hear your process so here are some words very

quickly so general words to do with death and then we will go back to the

live chat because Steve likes the live chat opposed to the dead chat haha do

what I did there mr. Duncan live chat not dead oh I see the opposite so that's

it so the opposite of dead is alive or you can say live and dead funeral dudu

it's your funeral mr. Duncan funeral is a phrase funeral is a word it is a noun

that describes the act of putting a person to rest so normally a ceremony

will take place before the body is buried or burnt or stuffed you stuff a

person I don't think you can I think you can because well is isn't a chairman mao

in china chairman mao is actually preserved hmm they're not stuffed

he's preserve in a big glass case floating around in

formaldehyde not sure you can stuff a human being even got tough enough skin

or fur I know who stuffed the is it is it Lennon

well he's preserved yes I think he's not on display anymore

anybody watch him from Russia is Lennon still on display I don't think he is

good I think he was deteriorating you know I would like to be stuffed so so I

think that's what I would like I would like it once I'm dead you can you can

stuff me if you want so that's stuff a human being I'm sure you can you can

stuff animals this oh yes because they've got fur you see

so you can't they've got very tough skin with fur so you can stuff them full of

cotton wool or something and and you wouldn't know but because we've got

clear skin clear you know you can't the skins too you can't stuff a human being

but what about what about when you sit down on your leather sofa so the leather

it's just stuffed isn't it really you've just left

cowhide isn't it tough okay you could make me into a sofa so so maybe you

could have a mr. duncan sofa so you could take my seat sitting on that you

could take my skin and you could make it into a lovely love enough a lovely sofa

animal skins very tough covered in fur you can stuff it and you can't see

what's underneath but if you try to stuff a human being

you'd be it would look a mess I'm going to be stuff we look a mess

preserved you see if we can we can put you in a bath of formaldehyde hmm or gas

or something to preserve you and then put makeup on you you see when an animal

dies you can't often tell it doesn't look that bad no but because the fur it

covers the skin you can't see the skin going pale when a human being dies or

you've seen a dead body is no nice I've never I've never actually seen a dead

body I've never seen a dead person ever but but you have haven't you I have I'm

not gonna say who go into that but it wasn't very nice not a pleasant

experience so I've never done that I've never I've never been near a dead person

or even touched a dead person I've touched dead animals that's something

that people do go around touching dead I imagine

feeling very similar you know when you buy a chicken from the supermarket mmm

and you take it out of the the wrapper you take the the packaging off off the

chicken and you touch it I imagine that that a dead person must feel very

similar to like it like a frozen turkey or frozen chicken that's what I think

anyway I've never I've never touched a dead person it's not something that

people normally aspire to doing though you know again visit the local morgue

they might let you it's on my list of things to do you're in a strange mood

today well we are talking about a strange

topic now when I was young I'm gonna let you into a little thing first of all

about my childhood now I actually experienced death at a

very early age and it really did have I have a very strong and profound affect

on me for for many years in fact it really did scare me scare me it scared

me to death you might say that one of my expressions

already there is a certain TV show and this is something that I'm not making up

there is a TV show that was on in the 1970s the very early 1970s and the name

of the show was Pipkins and this is the show that introduced me as a very young

child to death because they talked about it in one of the episodes where one of

the main characters an elderly man died and so what they did they actually

included his death is part of a story in this children's program brave and that's

yes I asked what I thought and they're talking all about it and that's how I

found out about death and I was only about maybe five five years old so

that's how I learnt all about it but the crazy thing about it is I I learned

about death for it from these characters

well that is that a hare or a rabbit that is a hair it doesn't look very

alive to me no that looks like a stuffed animal hmm so that that is the character

or one of them and the other character that told me all about death is is this

one so this is how I know I think you can see now why I'm so strange somebody

cut his nose off I don't know I think it's supposed to be a pig so we've got

these characters they're very scary children's program animals they're not

very friendly looking at know that they're quite scary looking creatures

but this is a show I used to watch as a child and this this particular program

introduced me to death wonderful so I found out all about it and it haunted me

for many years so there you go I thought I'd share that with you so

that's how I found out about it before then I didn't know about it you see I

just I just thought this is nice it's the world oh isn't that nice so

television is fun television is colorful and exciting and then one day they said

one day you're going to die and then that's it my little childhood was

shattered and it's like really find out find out there's no father Christmas

sorry there is there is a father Christmas he exists and he's definitely

real mr. Duncan how could you say not dealing with children these are educated

intelligent people that are watching us how could you say that

I can't believe if there are any children watching you know it's about

time you realized what life is really like and we've only got like is it six

weeks or five weeks till Christmas I'm so excited

sort of traumatic stress from it because for many years I used to wake up

screaming having had nightmares night after night and I think it was that

program that did it yes Catherine says that she's seen her father dying yeah

very tough I've been through that as well Catherine that's very it's very

upsetting to see particular if it's a slow lingering death through a long-term

illness it can be very it can be very traumatic to watch somebody that you

love going through that yes we're very sorry about that Catherine I think I

could sum it up very easily by saying death sucks fetus said that he has

buried his mother this week so you know condolences there for you learnt Vitesse

that so must be very very raw still yeah he's only just gone through that so

we're not really making fun of these things we are talking about it in an

open and honest way because that's one of the things I've always prided myself

about Steve over the past twelve years doing this I I often like to talk about

things that and sometimes if you're talking about a subject like death or

difficult if you can lighten it if you can make it humorous it makes it easier

to talk to and sometimes easy to bear so sometimes you know people joke about

death because it is such a horrific thing to think

about that the only way to the only way to talk about it is actually to is to

make fun of it to laugh of it yes that's you're not making fun of individual

people who have lost anybody yeah just the subject itself that's it

Ann Ann British humor especially British humour we do tend to sort of make fun of

these these types of subjects and also well as I mentioned earlier in the

excerpt because I showed an excerpt earlier about death and the full version

it's like pretty much before you were born in fact if you think of your

earliest memory Steve think of your very earliest memory the first memory that

you have imagine that first memory in your head think about it now think about

the day before that first memory or the week before that first

ever memory think about a year before that first ever memory that's that's

what I think being dead feels like that's it

it's just nothing there's nothing you didn't know anything before you were

born yes it's not I don't think yes people

when people say they they're frightened it well yes you can be frightened of

dying I suppose so certainly be frightened of having a

painful or or a traumatic death hmm you know being murdered or being burnt or

something horrific like that torture yes well there is lingering there is a

distinction there is a distinction between between death that is being dead

and dying which is the act of going to that place so you are going to that

point where you do actually die so you can have a quick death you can get hit

by a train boom done or you can die slowly yeah ain't agony so there are two

choices really one thing's for certain you probably something that somebody

said something to be a long time ago which help me no point in worrying about

death because once you're dead you're not going to know you did yes that's not

going to actually no you can spend all your life worrying about dying and then

your life is miserable and then you die and then you don't know that you're dead

anyway so the whole thing is it make makes it makes it all pointless really

doesn't it yes some people believe depending on your religion that could be

heaven in hell some people believe in reincarnation that's it whereas you come

back as come back as another creature or even as another human beings you keep

going through this cycle until you've achieved a higher plane and then you're

off somewhere else it's it's you know one of them it would probably probably

people often wonder well which one is the right one what should I believe in

well probably none of them are wrong there isn't a should that's that's

that's it isn't it there isn't a should and we don't know so the no point in

speculating so should you be good while you're alive if you don't it are there

going to be repercussions if you're a bad person as I always say I believe in

lie before death that's it this is it life

before death oh I think I mean now now I know you meant before you were born oh

no oh yes so now I can go outside I can feel the warm sunshine on my face I can

feel the chill from the cold breeze I can poke mr.

Steve like this and he can feel it because we're both alive that's it

that's that's the moment every single moment that we all are are alive and the

only thing that separates us between this and eternity is a beat of the heart

thinking about what happens after death or what happen to actually live now yes

because yeah I think it's best to assume there's nothing and just live life to

the full that's it and then if there is something then great it's a bonus yes

but if you you know what what's the point of spending your whole life

thinking about it or acting according to what somebody tells you should do a

religion or something like that I mean if say if for example you believe

that that you've got another go another chance you're gonna be reincarnated

again to have another chance well you might be a bit lazy in this life and

think wow I can't be bothered with that you know I've got another chance coming

in but but the finger off thinking this is it now is the only lesson for that

that doesn't work because if you are if you are believing that that you get

another chance then maybe that next chance will depend on how well you do in

this life well that's well that's my point I mean

I don't speculate I don't think about it in fact in some ways I'm kind of looking

forward to it it's it's sort of what you know you get to a point where maybe

maybe you're old and you're dribbling down yourself and you keep wetting

yourself in pooing your pants it might be a good time to actually do it covers

many many areas you see you talking about assisted dying Mr Dan well some

people do believe in that believe dying some people believe that

if you are in pain or if you are suffering you should you should be

allowed to end your own life or you should get someone to help you end your

life yeah yeah I mean this shanab rooms were opening up there well they shoot

but but the other day I hurt my leg and now I can't walk very well they take

them into a field and they shoot them they kill them that's because it's a

but the problem nowadays is he no but people nowadays think animals and human

beings are on the same level well I mean I you know that there is a big case to

think that animals in fact in fact that they seem to be proving it more and more

now that a lot of animals for prof. example monkeys apes I mean that they

they must be thinking and you can see a bird you can see animals are thinking

and I mean a dog is obviously happy you can see a dog gets happy I mean to treat

to treat an animal differently what at what point do you decide that they're

worth treating in a different way is it their thinking imagine if we found out

that that every animal we know is actually thinking yeah a cow is thing

maybe they are actually conscious and they know if we know if they're

conscious I mean horror of discovering that imagine you're a cow in a field in

you're going oh I'm a cow in the field and I'm very aware of everything that's

happening around me well you couldn't possibly kill a cow for food then if you

knew that imagine the horror so talking of animals let's let's

garden this is something I filmed a couple of days ago Oh

creature this is a magpie feeding in the garden and you can see it's collecting

peanuts stuffing his beak or her beak so it's putting peanuts into its beak and

flying away and it's come back for some more

12 13 so that that magpie just collected 13 happiness mister dunne yes and here

comes a vole oh now we always think these look like mice don't we

they do a bit stayed it they look like nice and now it's a Robin well all I can

a short tail and in a moment we're going to see something that looks like a vole

way it's got a long long nose what's fascinating is there is that a vault and

you've got a vowel in a shrew living in the same the same place so it looks as

if they're sharing the same tunnel that's quite incredible

meaning of that monument yes well we have visited Stonehenge haven't we

well we've driven past but we didn't go in because it was too busy so we

actually went along the road that goes by and we looked and we waved it's

Stonehenge hello Stonehenge the thing the coal is nobody really knows why

thousands of years ago people actually built Stonehenge they think it's

something to do with lots of theories of course as it's something to do

everything how to tell the time because it certainly is lined up with with I

think the Sun but nobody really knows was it what were they worshipping at God

or was it aliens from another planet there's all sorts of theories and they

don't actually know physically how they move such heavy stones around yes

because we can't actually do it today but as far as we're aware we think it

was built by by the ancient druids I think so yes and they worshiped the Sun

they thought the Sun was a God so they worshiped the Sun and so Stonehenge as

far as we can tell we don't really know we're not sure they used to worship the

Sun by gathering when the Sun was at its longest and shortest so during the

summer solstice when the Sun was up for a very long time and then when the Sun

was at its shortest so when the winter solstice arrived they would also go and

they would have a ceremony so that's what they think although we're not

entirely sure to be honest they were probably sacrificing people as well as

imagine yes there's any evidence of that but ancient cultures used to like

sacrificing humans oh they probably sacrificed virgins so so we're okay I

think we're okay aren't we but I am

first phrase scared to death that means to frighten someone

very much not literally to death it's often used in an exaggerated way so to

make somebody very frightened for example you could say or don't come up

behind me like that you nearly scared me to death

hmm a certain shock or surprise I thought you were going to tell me

something really bad you nearly scared me to death

yes so it's a it's just a phrase that you use as an exaggeration really so if

I were to come up behind you suddenly mr. Duncan and you couldn't hear me

coming then you turned red ha you were really scared yourself don't

do that uni scared me to death so it's just to scare to death is the

action and you you will feel scared to death sudden a sudden shock sudden shock

/ or frightening experience that isn't necessarily going to harm you it's just

a phrase that you use oh don't hope you nearly scared me to death it's a common

phrase that people use is it not mr. Duncan it is to scare someone to death -

to do something that shocks them you could do it purposely or accidentally

hmm do mean so for example sometimes I come home from from work drive back mr.

Duncan's been in the house all day on his own and he doesn't hear me come into

the house and then suddenly the doors are going he comes in ah someone's

breaking into the house unity scared me to death

fate worse than death a fate I'm not you can see our bodies it

death as long as you can see that your hands are cold your hands feel that

that's an ordeal that is so bad that a death is preferable a fate fate of

you actually feel as though death would be better than that so it's a it's a

misfortune which makes life not worth a living

otice another way of looking at it for example the treatment that I received

for cancer was so bad that it was a fate worse it was like a fate worse than

death that's an interesting choice yes yes exactly or maybe maybe we could just

use it in in a light-hearted way you can but let's look for some not

light-hearted you've certainly found those you could use it for somebody

who's being tortured oh you could say that torture was a fate worse than death

yes you would you would rather die than go through the pain of being tortured or

slavery if somebody's taken into slavery which still happens today on many parts

of the world you could say it was a fate slavery is the fate and it's worse than

death because your being alive are going to be so awful that it's a face a fate

worse than death so it's a long long term suffering

long-term suffering is simply on a lighter note people can say Oh blimey

fancy being married to her him or her you could be talking about a couple and

there's somebody in that relationship that's always nagging at them all makes

their life very difficult you could say Oh blimey I wouldn't like to be married

to them it must be like a fate worse than death

yes so we can use it sort of figuratively to sort of just say

something that I'd rather not do yes rather than really something that really

is very bad it would be a fate worse than death some people might say

watching mr. Duncan's livestream it is a fate worse than death

yes alike how you don't really mean it it's the light-hearted way of sort of

exaggerating how you feeling another one please going out with somebody you know

going on a bad date you could say well I went out with them it was

it was like oh it was a fate worse than death okay right oh we're down here love

to death to love someone very much so much that they can often get away with a

lot with a lot so it's somebody that you love literally you love them so much

you're gonna love them till till they all you die to love somebody to death it

means you love them a great deal she loves her husband to death even when he

is unfaithful to her she stays with him again those two will always be together

they love each other to death yes can we mean literally or figuratively that's it

as well so in that sense as well sorry to interrupt but again it's used

oh it's often used in a in a poetic way rather than something that's hard and

cold so you might say oh I love you to death or you can also love love anything

to death I love it to death I love that music I love it to death so you can sort

of express just how much you you love something or enjoy something another one

at death's door at death's door I often wake up in the morning feeling like that

it means you're very close to death so if you were to think about it if if you

were in a room and in the next room death was waiting you were waiting right

by the door you're at death's door so it you can describe that as somebody who is

very very ill probably in bed maybe on their deathbed and they just they're

just very ill but you could say it lit so it can be made it can be said little

literally that somebody is very very ill and you come out and you say well my

croissants which is very ill they're a death's door it means they're about to

die they're very close to death but you can also use it in the

an exaggerated way for example you can you can you could say oh oh you've only

got the flu you're not at death's door or you can always say I felt so ill you

could felt so you might graze your knee or something and cry a lot a lot about

it so don't be so ridiculous you're not a death door it's only it's only a

grazed knee so you can say it's sort of in an offhanded light-hearted way like

that as well men often exaggerate about how ill they feel when they have an

illness like a cold or flu yes and they'll say oh I'm feeling so unwell

I'm death's door yes if you want somebody to really if you want a lot of

sympathy from somebody you say to them you know you might have been off work

the week before but a stomach bug or something oh well I thought I was at

death's door yes but he won't really know just exaggerating can it death can

literally mean you know if somebody's very ill in hospital then you can mean

it literally that they are literally about to die here's another one mr.

Duncan something will be the death of something or some or someone repeatedly

causes serious issues for example that so you could save a cat for example kept

running in front of you all the time and you need to kept tripping up over it

you've got a pet dog or a cat you could say huh that cat would be the death of

me one day so because they do something that that is could be actually quite

dangerous or you might see you might even describe a car you could say that

car plummy that's gonna be the death of me one day

I think he's breaking down in the middle of a motorway or something that

repeatedly keeps happening it's a good way of expressing a hazard oke exactly a

hazard you you could say that you might worry about somebody a lot all the time

and you might say you might worry about your children or your partner going away

and it and the worry you might think oh that

person they are that they're going to they're going to be the death of me one

date yes because you just can't sit there doing things that make you worried

all the time yes that's it cool something that causes stress or worry or

too much anxiety yes you'll be the death of me one day another one another one

right here we go oh I'm not sure I'm getting on very well with this mr. doom

that's alright to Sam the death knell ooh the death

knell so the knell isn't out it's an ancient word for a bell so to sound the

death at knell means you're sounding a bells just say that something's dying

and that that's to cause an organization a system or an activity to fail or end

so it's going to happen for example the opening of a new

out-of-town shopping center sound the death knell for the local high street

shops hmm so a big out-of-town shopping mall is opened nobody's going to go to

the other shops anymore and so it's inevitable that they're all going to

close down and die so it sounds a death knell so the death

knell is is the sign of something bad happening or about to happen that's

going to cause something to finish or end hoodia for example a restaurant

they're losing their head chef could sound the death knell for the restaurant

mm-hmm because if you've got a successful

restaurant and your best or head chef leaves then people won't come there so

it could go they might or it might not be they might find a new chef that's

just as good but it could sound the death knell for that restaurant you can

use that a lot of different ways I love that word knell now let me just means

Bell it's another word for Bell hmm so it's Latin you know there's a bell

tolling clanging away it means the end of everything the kiss of death is a

similar phrase hmm to that the kiss of death something that

causes a disaster something that causes a disaster or something to end so you

could say in those examples you could say the out the new out-of-town shopping

Mail spells the kiss of death for the local high street shops because they

won't be able to compete okay here's another one like death warmed up do like

death warmed up that's someone who looks very ill or is very ill you if somebody

comes to work and they're very pale they don't look very well you can say to them

blimey you look like death warmed up so literally that's that's a literal thing

so if if somebody was dead but you you but you warm them up that's what they

looked like a so imagine what somebody a dead body would look like warmed up so

and that's used to describe somebody who's not he was not very well or not

looking very well you look it's a great expression you can say you can describe

yourself you can you can have a bad cold or something or you can go to work and

somebody says all you don't look very well and you can say I feel like death

warmed up today yes it's a very common phrase in this country so you can use it

to express how you feel I feel like death warmed up yeah well

you can describe another person's appearance as looking like death warmed

up yes yes so yeah particularly if you've had a bad cold or flu

oh you drag yourself into work I feel I feel like death warmed up today let's

fear death or even once death it could be a suicidal urge that drives people to

do reckless things could be conscious or unconscious a desire for

self-destruction somebody you might be depressed or feeling hopeless and they

just do things because they actually want to die but they're probably too

afraid to commit suicide I think they go off doing stupid things like driving at

high speeds without wearing a seatbelt go using doing all sorts of dangerous

sports things like that so you can say to Z you can say so you can say it

flippantly to somebody jokingly oh you're always doing bungee jumping or

going diving into caves and and diving under the sea have you got a death wish

or something yeah so you describe somebody who

literally and so but some people consciously unconsciously probably do

want to dive over more it's mainly used flippantly yes a person that just likes

these extreme sports yes so Charles Bronson in that film death

wish you know he he doesn't care somebody you've got nothing to lose his

is somebody died he loved very much and but so he just he wants to get revenge

on the people but he does all sorts of reckless things enjoy

shooting guns going into dangerous environments he could count he could die

but he doesn't care because you know he's lost what he lost the person he

come to the end of the road and there's no way back you have to turn round you

can't carry on down that road and end up somewhere else so a lot of housing

estates where there's lots of houses there are dead-end streets where you

have to turn around and go back because they don't lead anywhere so that's the

literal meaning it literally means that the dead end our way out but also what

an earth is that mr. Duncan it's the end of a road he does not like it from here

taking a spin in a Morgan roadster

the Morgan motorcar started out as a single seated three-wheeler designed and

built by the company's founder HFS Morgan way back in 1909

the Morgan brand made its debut at the 1910 Olympia Motor Show later the car

was modified so as to carry two people but retained its three-wheeled chassis

before we are Morgan made its first appearance in 1936

the vehicle we are riding in today is the 3 litre v6 roadster which is one of

Morgan's newest model

because of the light weight of the chassis this car possesses incredible

acceleration although it can feel a little bumping on the country roads

2009 marks the centenary of the first Morgan being built and during that 100

years the car has undergone many changes in design

the low seating gives you an exhilarating sense of both motion and

speed thanks to its 203 brake horsepower engine

the production factory still retains the feeling of a small family-run company

with all of the cars being hand-built at there was to show premises in Malvern

to say that the Morgans sports car is popular is an understatement at the

height of its popularity there was a three year waiting list of future Morgan

illness or eager to get their hands on one of the vehicles for themselves
