Which is, of course, you know where it is. I know where it is.

We all know where it is.

It's England.

And. Yeah, I know I pressed the wrong button.

I know it's going to be one of those days today, you say, because I'm not feeling very well.

I'm going to get straight down to it.

I've not been very well over the past three days.

Friday morning I woke up

with the most peculiar sensation,

and I looked in the mirror in the bathroom,

and I was rather horrified to find that half of my face

had swollen up like a grapefruit, and I was a little bit worried about it.

And I don't know what it was.

So I went to the doctors and, they gave me something for it.

And now I'm feeling well. I'm not.

I'm not sure how I'm feeling, to be honest.

So we'll see what happens today.

In fact, things are so desperate.

I've had to bring some reinforcements.

And when I say reinforcements, I'm.

I'm using the term very loosely.

By the way, my name is Mr.

Duncan.

I live in England, and I talk about English.

You might say that I'm an English addict. And.

And for most of the time I am here.

He is then joining me today, giving me as much support as he can, which, to be honest with you,

isn't that much.

It's been an interesting couple of days for Mr. Duncan.

you've got, like, a gum infection, it turns out.

Yeah, I was I wasn't going to name it. And, Yes.

I just don't feel well.

And I've got this strange infection going on in my gum, and it's making me feel really weird.

And not just that, but also the the tablets that the doctor gave me

are making me feel even more weird, if I was honest with you.

Well, people in this country complain about the NHS and they can't see a doctor, and it's not true at all.

At least it isn't where we live.

Well, because we found at the doctor at 830, you had an appointment to see,

the doctor at ten, and by 11:00, we'd got the antibiotics, and, you had started the course.

I think that's amazing. so,

thumbs up to the NHS.

It's worked perfectly well for Mr.

Duncan because, it looks like, horrible infection was starting.

And if we left it a few days, I think it could have developed into something very serious.

Yeah. Could be dead. No, it would have done so.

This is what I was gonna say, Steve.

Okay, we get it.

Steve and I just, I've got a swollen face.

I'm just tending a table about.

You know, I just want to get out of the way. That's all right. Okay.

I don't draw attention to it.

I'll just say, if I seem strange today and distant.

That's the reason why. And that's. That's it.

No political stuff. Please.

We've got enough of that rubbish going on at the moment.

By the way, you may have heard we do have a lot of things going on here in the UK.

I can, I can tell you now from, from my own experience,

the country is not

not burning for those wondering

so so it's only very small places, very small areas where there is trouble, but most of it

95%, if not 98% of the country is having a lovely day and we're all just having a very nice time.

So don't don't watch too much of the news about the UK because you know what it's like.

The media like to exaggerate everything to make it seem more dramatic.

So please don't worry. We are okay.

We haven't been attacked.

The house is not on fire so nothing like that.

Steve's car is still the right way up

and it is not in flames.

So. So for those worried about what's happening here in the UK, don't worry.

It's only a very, very small places, very small areas.

But of course, when you watch things on the television, it always looks worse than it actually is.

Because if there's one thing we are doing at the moment, we are living in the age and I think this is true, Steve,

we are living in the age of hyperbole where everything has to be slightly exaggerated

for views and clicks.

It seems to be the important thing nowadays.

So the more dramatic something is, the more the more people want to see it. So?

So there is a tendency to exaggerate things?

Well, I think so anyway.

And it is a strange time that we are living in because we have all sorts of things going on in the world anyway, Mr.

Steve is here giving me as much support as he can because I'm not feeling well and yet.

Look, look, I'm here.

I don't want a prize. But but, but but I don't really want.

I don't I don't want any reward.

To be honest, I don't do it for rewards.

I do it just because I hope it's helpful.

And I suppose it's. It's fun as well.

That's the reason why we do it. You see?

That's it. No other reason.

It certainly isn't money.

I know that if there's one thing I've realised on YouTube, you don't do it for money.

Unless of course, your your sexy and young, in which case, well.

Unfortunately that's not us unfortunately.

Because in a few days from now, Steve, I'm going to be another year older.

Can you believe it?

I'm just trying to remember when that is.

In fact, eight days from now, eight days, just eight,

eight days from now, it will be my birthday.

And I have to say, at the moment I feel twice my age, not half my age.

I actually feel double my age.

I know, isn't it strange though?

What what what my situation on Friday through Steve

is how quickly life can turn or change. Yes,

yes. One minute your life's find, the next minute disaster.

So you went to bed perfectly.

Well, no problems whatsoever.

And woke up with one side of your face swollen up? Yes.

due to some infection that must have been festering away for several days.

We didn't get the detail. Says.

Well, I'm just. You want me to support you, Mr. Duncan?

do you want to say something? I'm just not saying anything at all.

So there's a word festering.

If something's festering, it means it's there in the background.

You don't really notice it.

And something is building up slowly, like festering anger.

Yeah.

Which you could apply to the riots happening in the UK.

You could say that anger has been festering over a long period of time,

and then it broke out in the form of these isolated

troubles.

And you could say the same with Mr.

Duncan's infection had been sort of gathering momentum.

It had been sort of gradually growing the bacteria under festering away, and then suddenly broke out and Mr.

Duncan's face swelled up.

So that's a good word, fester to fully stir.

But it came from it came from nowhere.

That's the weird thing. I went to bed on Thursday night. No problem.

Woke up the next morning and my face was huge on one side.

You can still slightly see it.

It's still there and it and it is still sensitive and painful, but really, really weird.

And now I'm taking these terrible antibiotics

and I have to say they they've made me go a little bit weird.

And I know what you're going to say, Mr. Duncan.

There is no way you could be any weirder than you are, right now.

So, so that's the reason why Steve is here.

Now, for those wondering, Steve is here.

We're only here for about an hour, so make the most of it,

because I think I'm going to go to bed after I finish this, to be honest with you.

But yes, you are right, Mr.

Duncan. Sudden things can suddenly change.

You can be rather healthy. That happened to a friend of mine recently.

Fit, healthy, no cycles, 50 miles every other day.

Goes to the gym.

Does all this very fitting health a similar age to me.

Suddenly gets an infection in his, bladder somewhere.

the first lot of antibiotics don't work.

ends up in hospital, and, you know,

from what appears to be a very healthy standpoint, doesn't drink, doesn't smoke.

Suddenly ends up in hospital with a catheter stuck up his urethra.

I mean, you know, you just think, you know, and then this has happened to you.

I've known friends that have suddenly died.

People, you know, you can go out on the roads.

One minute you're driving along happy, and then boom, somebody smashes into you

or you run over somebody because you weren't concentrating.

Your whole life can suddenly change just like that.

It doesn't have to be health. It doesn't have to be health.

It can be all sorts of things.

You know, you you might be happily married and you think, oh, I'm so lucky

to be happily married with my beautiful wife, and we have this wonderful life.

And then you find out that she's running around with other men and she's having affairs.

Or maybe she's planning to run off with another man and.

And suddenly your life just just completely.

We can say that your life is turned upside down.

It's a very interesting phrase. So it's a great phrase.

If your life is turned upside down, it means everything suddenly becomes chaotic.

Everything you thought you knew in your life has completely changed.

I think we're depressing people on the live stream.

Oh, wait, why?

just some of the comments, but, but yes, we do want to talk about that.

we have to, carry on fighting, don't we?

yeah.

But yes, I mean, big things can happen at any time, but they they do.

They are, rare.

Relatively rare. Yeah.

most of the time, that's that's the point I'm trying to make about right about the troubles is another story.

I know somebody and,

where my mum used to live.

the neighbour, parent looks you know, on the surface, everything seems all right.

Married with children. And then suddenly,

his wife wakes up one morning but goes downstairs and says, I'm leaving you.

No warning, nothing.

I don't know if this relationship can't do it anymore.

Goodbye. And walks out.

This is it. And then divorce papers.

And he doesn't know why.

I mean, I don't I don't know the reasons, but.

Or get into that.

But just.

Yeah, life can suddenly change.

So make the most of it when it's going well.

Which is why people say to me, why are you still working, Mr.

Steve, you're 63.

You should retire because these are your best years.

You don't know you could be ill in five years time and then you regret it.

Well, it's a good point.

it is a good point, but I won't regret it because I made the right decision at the time for me.

So, if something happened to me, if I got ill, I would just say, well, that's life.

I can't do anything about that.

You know, in theory, I should have another 20 years, but who knows?

but this is this, isn't it?

And there is a positive point to make.

Even though this sounds negative, my positive point would be treasure each day that comes your way.

And when you can actually get out of bed and open the curtains and see the sun and the sky,

and you can walk outside and feel the breeze on your face, that's it.

That's you all.

Now, in that moment you are alive.

You are well, you are healthy, you are. You are there.

Which is something that our dear friend Lewis, who's on today, encapsulates,

lives life to the full things positive goes out and just just just experiences what's ever out there,

what is out there and what will be, will be stays fit, which is very, very important.

Yes. to your long term health, in fact, they've said now that walking 20 minutes or half an hour a day,

is equivalent

to the development of a wonder drug, that would just be the end.

All wonder drugs isn't.

There's no nothing you can do for your health.

That's that's better than just taking exercise every day.

Yeah.

There is no wonder drug that would ever be developed that could be as good as that.

It doesn't stop you getting hit by a bus, though.

That's the problem. Well, you need to be careful. Yeah.

I mean, yeah, some people will get run over by a bus when they go out for a walk.

And my my point is just not if you are in the moment where you are, well,

healthy, alive, that that is it that that's the moment that we're all in.

That's the moment you're in right now.

So. So never take those things for granted, because sometimes we waste.

We waste our days, don't we, Steve?

Oh, in front of the internet.

texting.

I spend a lot of time just reading stupid news stories,

on the internet and getting myself wound up and angry.

Yeah, about about, you know, articles.

And then I write comments underneath and join in with all the other hundreds and thousands of people

that are writing comments and then, oh, do I get a like, cavity likes, have I got have any dislikes?

And it's all, it's all a little bubble. Yes.

But what you have to remember, as I said at the start, Steve, this is what it's all about nowadays.

It's getting reactions.

We could say things on here, Steve, that would get a reaction.

And within a month we would probably get hundreds and hundreds of viewers.

But I don't want to do that because you could only do it for a short amount of time

before people then move off and watch another person doing the same thing.

So we could be quite outrageous if we wanted to.

I am very capable of doing that.

I could say things now that would be outrageous.

Steve's could, in fact, sometimes.

But sometimes Steve does say things that are outrageous.

Not not terrible, but sometimes a little outrageous. But

it that's what it's all about.

And your reaction, Steve, is what internet sites,

media outlets and people who who publish all of their stupid comments on Twitter, that's what they want.

They want a reaction because that what

that's what generates views, clicks and money.

That's what it's all about.

It is it is nothing to do with the subjects.

It's nothing to do with politics.

It's nothing to do with religion.

It's nothing to do with anything.

It's to do with getting a reaction from another person.

And when you get that reaction, that is a click.

That is a view, that is interaction.

And Twitter is the worst place.

Now, Steve often tells me that he he's never been on Twitter.

He didn't have a he doesn't use it.

And all I can say is that is the worst place on earth.

It is the worst place.

Now I have a Twitter account and I do look at Twitter,

but quite often I regret looking at it

for more than five minutes because it is incredibly.

I would say it's destructive.

That's that's it.

But the people on there now are generating

outrage, discussion, conflict, argument,

because then they will get the traffic, they will get the clicks, which then generates money.

And this is the strange cycle that we're now in.

And even the TV or the big media outlets

do the same thing because they've realised that's what people want.

They want to be outraged.

They want to have conflict, even YouTube.

I'm sorry. YouTube.

I mean, I know I've been on here for nearly 18 years doing this, but you are just as bad.

You pretend that you care about people, but really you are just as bad.

You want the anger, you want the outrage.

You want the the the fighting.

Because it generates views.

It generates clicks.

You want the hate in your comment section because people will come back to view the comments

and then the video will play, which means you get more and more and more people watching,

which means of course you can play your ads, you can have all sorts of interaction and that just builds up.

So the more, the more outrageous

you are, the more you get those viewers.

So. So I think quite this is serious, Steve, because it's, it is the state of everything at the moment.

If you put the television on, it is always the same thing.

Violence, aggravation, death, destruction, never anything nice.

You never see flowers growing in the field

on the news.

Oh, today some very lovely flowers came up in someone's garden.

And now we go over live to the garden where the lovely flowers are growing in the garden.

No one will watch that.

But of course, if someone came into the garden and started destroying the plants and breaking them, then.

Then you would have a new story.

Because then you could report on that terrible event.

The flowers have been destroyed, they've been torn up.

They've been wrecked by someone.

And then suddenly you have a more interesting story because you have something to talk about.

Something dramatic is happening.

And that's what I'm saying about the age

we are living in now because of the internet and because of information coming at us so fast.

Steve, I so I am nodding off.

You've been on a five minute rant.

This is not a rant.

I'm sure there must be a lot of people now going, yeah, yeah, that's right, you're right.

And YouTube is just as bad because that's the problem.

YouTube keeps saying we want everyone to be kind to each other whilst allowing people

to be rude and horrible and hateful towards each other, because that's

what gets views and clicks.

It's true.

Yes, talking about going back

to living in the moment, that is something that I'm always constantly working on.

It's something I'm very bad at.

I'm always in here thinking, thinking, not really truly with it, whereas but

but I mean, it would seem that I'm with it when I'm on this live stream and I am.

This is the one, one of the few places I am absolutely in the moment because I have to be.

Because I know you're all watching.

So I can't sort of drift off and pretend I'm not really here and start

thinking about some news items or problems or something.

I have to be absolutely in the moment, otherwise you will know, oh, what's Mr.

Steve doing? He's not really listening. He's not concentrating properly.

So that's.

And and the other time I'm really in the moment is when I'm singing or we're involved in music

because you have to be because you have to concentrate on the other one is when I'm swimming,

which I don't do very often, but swimming.

I really have to focus on swimming because I just sink.

We always, I find, where was the last time you went for a swim?

I can't remember, oh, years and years ago.

Probably the last time was when you filmed it at the beach.

At the beach, which you sometimes show.

That was probably the last time, but I always I'm always in the moment when I'm swimming

because, I'm not a very good swimmer and I have to concentrate on not drowning.

so that sort of survival instinct kicks in.

So that's three things.

But if I go for a walk or run, my brain can be I can just forget about it.

I wouldn't even couldn't tell you anything.

Sometimes I can go for like, a half an hour walk.

And I couldn't tell you anything about it because I pass all this beautiful scenery.

But none of it.

I haven't registered with me because I've been thinking about things.

but if it's

something I've got to really concentrate on, then I can be in the moment.

Then, which is, Yeah, because it's stress.

It's stress. If you're not in the moment, you're actually causing stress to yourself.

I know it gives me stress, so I'm going to unsubscribe.

I think I'm going to make a decision here.

Like again, that, because I do subscribe to a, I won't say which one it is, a newspaper.

And I get articles obviously sent through to me from them.

Pay so much every month.

because a lot of newspapers now, you don't go and buy the, the newspaper, you read them online.

I'm going to unsubscribe because, it's just it really I don't need that stress in my life

because 99% of those stories don't have any effect on my life at all.

Yeah, they're just things that will get me riled up and angry. Yes.

Well, that's, in fact, what you're doing as Steve is just proving the point I just made.

That's what gets the views.

That's what gets the clicks on the internet.

And I know now, I know most people won't actually sort of take any notice of what I'm saying now.

Maybe they're going to click away because because it, it is maybe too true or too real

where you're exposing the, the the reality of it.

So, so when you think about it, the reason why we often do things is because we are getting something from it.

And and it is true, people are selfish and it is nature that makes us all selfish.

But of course it is possible to to somehow use

that impulse in certain ways, especially with Mr.

Steve subscribing to that particular newspaper.

So because it feeds you the things you want to read, it will carry on doing it.

And then of course, you get pleasure from looking at it or you like to react to it.

And so they give you more of it and then you subscribe for another month

and then another month and another month and it just continues.

And then after a while you are doing the same thing.

Maybe, or you've been doing it for maybe 2 or 3 years and not even realise that all of that time has passed

in which time they've made loads of money out of you and you have gained nothing.

There we go. Mr.

Duncan, I've made a note to myself that I'm going to do this when we come off line.

If I've written it down, it's more real, and I'm more likely to do it.

Yeah. So there's a note.

And I know you don't like me doing this, but there's a note for me to stop doing it.

I'm sure they will entice me back with a half price offer in a month's time.

That's it.

But but it is that.

But but this is the reason why I mention YouTube.

Because if you look at people who are getting lots and lots of views or lots and lots of people

watching and commenting, quite often, they will be talking about something that gets other people angry.

So one group will agree with it, another group will disagree with it. Yes.

And then they will fight together on that particular channel or on that video,

which means that video then will get many more views.

Yes, we get it, Mr. Duncan. No, I'm not saying you don't.

I'm not saying you don't, Steve.

I'm just putting your it's your monthly YouTube rant, but it isn't a rant.

This is this.

This is something that I've talked about in the past.

The only way you can get attention nowadays, because there are millions of people doing it.

So remember, do you remember Steve way back in 2006?

Because we are talking about memories today.

I remember in 2006 what YouTube was like.

There were very few people on there or on here, very few people doing it.

I started teaching English. No one else was doing it.

It was a very different environment.

But now, of course, we have probably 1.5 billion people

using YouTube and millions and millions of videos

being uploaded to YouTube every single day.

Not not every year, day.

That's incredible.

And what I feel is,

if you have to do more now to get attention, you have to be more outrageous.

You have to do things that are more dangerous.

You have to explore topics that will get people arguing and fighting.

In fact.

And this, this is this is the big one, Steve.

I was told by someone from YouTube who advised me

how to get more people watching

was to create division amongst my viewers.

That was the advice that came to me from YouTube itself.

You need to create conflict on your channel

because once you do that, it will never stop doing it.

It's like a machine that carries on working on its own.

And that's what we don't do, Steve.

We don't come on here to create conflict amongst people.

We try to get everyone agreeing and being friendly

is if we're talking about English, the English language.

So it's it's very difficult to create conflict because it's,

you know, I can't argue with you over the pronunciation of a word, but that's not it's

not going to really work because there is any really, you know, it's fairly fixed.

It would seem a bit silly.

We're not talking politics or religion so much as I'd love to, even though sometimes we do go down that road.

Yes, to those subjects.

But but that isn't what we do.

So people don't know us for that thing.

Where is lots of people who've established their brand on YouTube as being a person who likes to create conflict?

They they will always get new viewers, won't they, Steve?

Because people want to go back to find out what people are on the way.

But, you know, let's just do what we do.

I went into a doctor's surgery the other day and they said, oh, no, you can't see the doctor.

that he's got Covid.

Okay, well, that's that's a pretty good reason for not seeing the doctor,

because the doctor is supposed to do the opposite, not give you illnesses.

They're supposed to take your illness away.

So I can see.

I can see where that that might be a problem if you are a doctor,

because you you want to make people better.

Not not worse memories, Mr.

Memories like the pages from my mind.

All those deep and mystic memories of the way we were,

that sort of thing.

We visited the place.

In fact, we visited a place that we visited yesterday.

Yesterday we went to a place where Mr.

Steve or the area in which Mr.

Steve grew up as a young person. Yes.

But do you remember way back in 2007.

So we are going back around 17 years.

We went to a place called Chipping Campden, a ward,

and we were with well, we were with your parents, your mother and father.

Well, I have the video right now. Really.

I've made some edits to the video, but this is us.

I'm not in the video, but Mr.

Steve is in the video.

And also your parents are in the video.

2007 way back in 2007.

I can't believe you found that.

I didn't I didn't know you were going to show that today. Mr..

No. Well, here it is. We're going to have a look now.

So this is way, way, way, way 2007, in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, which is where I went to school.

Yes, from the age of 11 to actually visited your school yesterday, didn't we?

We did. I haven't been back there for probably 20 years.

So here we go.

This is way back in 2007.

And then a little bit later, we will look at a video that we filmed yesterday in the same place.

So first of all, casting our minds back to those early times, those early memories

17 years ago.

Yes. God, didn't I look young then?

You haven't changed a bit.

Yeah. No, dear, that's quite frightening.

So that was. That was.

I suppose I should just explain.

That was way back in 2007, and we were in a place called Chipping Camden,

and we were actually there with your parents walking around.

And I remember we, we just being to have a look at a new car or a second

hand car, a used car that your mum wanted to drive around it.

And I remember that day very clearly.

Lots of strange things happened on that day, didn't it?

Because all of those sports cars came by

and we saw yesterday some old car as well.

So wasn't that strange?

So there was almost a very strange similarity

between what happened yesterday and what we saw in that video.

Yes, that's a Chipping Campden.

Yes. it's not Camden in, London.

No, it's a separate place in the Cotswolds, which is a very beautiful

part of the UK, sort of in the centre of the UK.

So the South central central area, where I grew up in and I went to school

in this particular town, and yes.

nice.

So that was 2007.

You had just come back from China that.

Yes, that was that was the same year I came back from China.

And a lot of things were happening in your parents life because they were planning to move

and all sorts of things were going on. It was a very busy year.

I always remember 2007 as being this roller coaster ride.

It was it was actually quite, a traumatic year.

So I, I'd come back from China.

We were together again, which was a nice thing.

And we had lots of other things we were planning as well.

And also we were helping your parents, they were moving house and they had to, to do all sorts of things.

Lots of things were changing.

So it is interesting when you see that 17 years ago. Yes.

And of course, the other thing that's interesting is seeing how

the quality of the video, because it's not very good quality, it's very fuzzy.

And the, the, the it's not very steady.

It looks as if I'm jumping around whilst I'm filming it.

But that's because in 2007, camera technology was still in its early stages.

Isn't that incredible?

Digital cameras were still not very good at recording quality video

in 2007, and a lot of people forget that.

So we all take it for granted that we can just pick up our phone

and film things nowadays without without even worrying about it.

But but way back in 2007, it was incredibly

hard to film something with good quality because that is as well

the only, moving picture, the only video that we have of my father.

And because he didn't like

my parents at the time, they didn't like Mr.

They weren't comfortable with it.

My mum never liked having her picture taken.

But that's literally the only video record of my father.

And it was, you know, you took that.

And, I mean, it's not very much, really, but it's something,

I don't have any other videos because I didn't like to do that.

And and this this brings me on to another point, Steve.

You don't realise how important those moments are,

because usually they don't seem important at the time.

But now we can watch that.

And there you are, walking with your mother and father through the streets of Chipping Campden.

It's there in front of you and you can see it actually happening.

But that was just a very brief, simple moment of time.

And now it's incredibly precious.

And that brings me back to what I said earlier about if you can wake up in the morning

and you are alive and you can feel everything around you, that's it.

That's the moment.

That's the most important moment that you have, is that moment

that you're in at that very time it is.

And so video that's why I like recording things.

That's why I like taking pictures.

It annoys Mr. Steve so much.

But I always feel it's an important thing.

In fact when I was recording that and I bet you don't remember this, Steve,

but you were you were annoyed that I was doing it.

Your dad was annoyed that I was doing it. Yes. But now

we have the record.

We have that moment.

I was annoyed because I knew it was annoy my parents,

but it just shows. And it's funny, actually.

We went there yesterday to see what it now looks like.

I haven't been back there for 2020 years.

Strangely enough, I didn't feel.

I thought I was going to feel sort of a bit of an emotion, a bit upset, but I didn't, so I was quite pleased about that.

So the thing is, you didn't even recognise the area because it's all new houses, so you can't even see gone.

You can't even see where the house was or any, any fragment of the house.

So that video that I made, those videos that I recorded

all those years ago are now very precious because you can actually relive those moments.

You can see the house, you can see inside the house. Yeah.

By the way, your dad wouldn't let me go upstairs.

No, I wanted to film.

It was a bit funny.

Like I wanted to film your your bedroom as it was.

So I wanted to film you where you used to spend your time, but your dad wouldn't let me.

So he said, you can't go upstairs. Okay, then. No problem.

It's not.

I don't lose out. But you won't have those. You won't have those.

I don't have those memories that I might have.

I don't think I've got any pictures of my bedroom.

But anyway, we do have a lot of video clips of your house as it was before it was demolished.

I've got a lot from when I was a child.

Yes, I have to take loads of pictures. But not video.

But not video. There's certainly no video. No, no.

So again, that's why it's so important to to to have these little memories

when you take a photograph or a video you are literally capturing time. Yes.

And you can look back. Yes.

And you can relive those moments and they can be happy times.

They can be sad times, especially if you if you watch maybe a video,

of a family member, maybe one of your parents who is no longer around, and I do.

I have videos of my mum,

so I have videos.

I'm very lucky.

I have videos of my mother and I can hear her talking and she's alive and she's in the videos.

She's still there and it's amazing.

You can actually still almost reach out and touch that person.

You can you can almost hug them.

I scream, I still find that very odd that

when celebrities die, singers, actors,

that they are still available to see as they were, in,

you know, in, in a video, I still find that

almost I can't almost comprehend when I see them why they're not still there.

It's like when I look at a picture of my mother.

Well there she is. There's a picture.

Why isn't she still here.

And it's the same with people that die.

Celebrities when you it's, it's I don't know I don't quite understand I know it's

physically it's all it's on you know, it's, it's a digital or whatever.

light has captured that image.

I understand all that, but.

But to see them still moving around, talking actors in films.

But they're not here.

It's a very odd thing for your brain to comprehend.

And of course, up until

relatively recently, in terms of history of human beings, it's

only in the last sort of 150 years or so that we've been able to capture images of people.

so before then, that was it.

You only had your memory? Yeah, of that person.

But if there was, you know, there if you were rich, lived in a rich family, somebody might have painted you.

So for the vast majority of the population, there was no access

to images of people that had died yet.

So but even photographs.

And that's the other thing that I still find fascinating.

Even photographs.

We we

assume that photographs were around for a very, very, very long time.

The, the, the ability to take a photograph.

But it is still a recent thing in the development of, of humanity.

Photography is just is just a couple of steps back.

It's it's not even something that is being established.

It is very recent driving cars, flying aeroplanes, all of this stuff

is relatively new.

So I think every time this type of technology changes, Steve, I think it does

change us in a way, because now we can relive things in almost,

well, it's it's almost creepy how how realistic

and how how real everything is that we are playing back.

So imagine in 50 years when people have 4K

video of their parents and they can watch it on a huge screen,

and you have this amazing quality of that person talking to you, and yet they are no longer alive.

But the image will be so realistic.

It will be almost as if they're they're standing there in front of you.

probably would be able to recreate it in some kind of hologram.

Of course, you won't be able to interact with them, but, yes.

Is it a good thing that you can look back, or is it better that, you just remember them in your mind?

Because that's how we

used to just remember people.

Just memories.

That's what we had.

We didn't have any physical. We didn't have a photograph, a video.

Which is why writing was so important, which is why stories were so important.

Yeah.

That's why when you write things down, that was the only way of recording anything,

drawing something, painting a picture or a portrait of a person.

That's the only way you would ever know what that person looked like.

So we only know how.

Watch what William Shakespeare looked like.

We don't have his photograph, but we do have portraits

that were painted or sketches that were made of these notable people.

And of course, when we go back even further in history, Steve, we have sculptures.

We have busts of of people from, from some way back in time.

It's interesting you were rich and famous at the time.

Yeah.

It's or you're a leader or something.

You might get a bust made of yourself out of marble.

or you might have.

If you're a member of the aristocracy, you or a great leader, you might have your painting, done.

But of course, that takes hours and hours and hours.

Yeah.

It's, it's amazing to think you can take a picture of somebody now in seconds.

And there it is.

Yeah, but anyway. Yes, but that is what that is, it isn't it?

We we take it for granted that we can just take pictures and that they're then stored away somewhere.

And maybe, maybe, maybe we don't look at them for maybe five, ten, 15 years.

And then one day you will go into that file and suddenly all of those pictures will be there.

And the most fascinating thing, of course, is when you see yourself

in older

photographs, that is the one that is the big one is when you see yourself

projected in front of you, an image of yourself

as you were and you said, Just Steve, you look so young in that video.

And yes, we were there yesterday.

I wasn't feeling great, but I managed to to go there and we did have a good time.

In the end, the weather was lovely and there weren't too many people there.

I thought there would be more people there yesterday because it does attract a lot of tourist to that area.

But very, very there was, you saw there the typical

light coloured sort of golden, the yellow sandstone,

that is the is the, the local stone

that, all the houses tend to be made of in that area.

In fact, you can't build a house in the Cotswolds unless it has is made of that stone.

If that's at least something that resembles it.

to admit that I don't know what chipping means in Chipping Campden.

There's another town called Chipping Norton.

There's a few with chipping at the beginning, and I can't remember what it means.

So somebody, may well break.

Oh, it means cutting or breaking.

That's the definition of the word.

Yes, but whether whether it means that in the context of the name of the town, I don't know, but it was famous.

That town was famous, as were a lot of towns in the Cotswolds for sheep farming and wool.

The wool industry dating back to sort of 14 1500s, if not earlier.

and that market hall was where the sheep would come to be

sheared.

I seem to remember from my school days it was sold or something like that.

But yes, it's, very much an area of the country famous for its, its wool.

and,

you can look that up, go back hundreds and hundreds of years.

As a definition, chipping means to remove a small amount from something.

So that is the definition of the actual word, not in reference to the name of the place.

However, quite often they would they would give each area a slightly different name

just so they weren't confused with each other a little bit like here in Much Wenlock.

So Much Wenlock is very close to another place called Little Wenlock,

and the reason why they are called Much Wenlock and Little Wenlock is

so you don't get them confused with each other, or else they would have

the identical name.

So that's the reason why.

So quite often words or small things will be changed

or added to to a place name, so it won't be confused.

Or of course it can identify all of those places

belonging to a certain area, which I think

is what is happening there in the Cotswolds.

So far reports has looked it up and chipping means market.

And I'm sure you're right I remember now from my school days.

So it's it's a market town and it was famous for its sheep and its wool industry.

and so yeah.

So if you've got chipping in front of it, it means that lots of things get sold there.

So if you wanted to go to the market and sell your animals or your produce, that's where you would go.

So people would probably know that markets take place in these towns, whether they still do now, I don't know.

Well,

there are places that still have animal markets and cattle markets.

They still exist in some places, not everywhere, but certain places do still have them.

They still have cattle markets on certain days of the week, normally on a much larger scale.

It's a little bit like the other thing that often is used at the end of a town or a place.

You call it the Shire s h I r e, which of course

relates to the surrounding area of a town.

So, for example, I came or I was raised

in a place called Stafford and the surrounding area.

All of the small villages that surround Stafford

are called, well, it's known as Staffordshire.

So the Shire relates to those places that surround one particular, like a district.

You could almost say yes it is.

It's the old phrase that was used to to show that those with surrounding areas

of that one town, that one place probably originally they that was there was some lord that would,

that ruled that area.

probably and and so to, to make sure

everybody knew it was his would have been his, yeah.

Yeah. I mean, it's Gloucestershire.

We were in Gloucestershire yesterday.

Staffordshire and where we of course live in Shropshire or Shropshire.

You don't pronounce it Shropshire.

You pronounce it Shropshire.

Ayrshire at the end, not Shire.

but. Yeah.

Or to do with historical land boundaries and.

And who would own it at that, you know, going back hundreds and hundreds of years.

So it's so in this area we call it Shropshire, even though there isn't a place called Shropshire,

because the old word for this area was Salop.

Salop.

So that's what Shropshire was originally known as.

So Shropshire is still used, although this area was part of, of a place called Mercia.

Mercia was the area in the Midlands, and that was the old name for it.

In fact we still use that in certain respects when we talk about, for example,

the areas that are placed by certain authorities.

So we still use Mercia even though the area itself doesn't actually exist anymore.

But we still say things like West Mercia, we still relate to that place, even though it doesn't technically exist anymore.

It's very strange, Loretta says, comparing the two footages.

The one from 2007 and the one from yesterday.

Not much has changed in the urban landscape.

No, no, because they won't be.

The locals won't be allowed to change it.

there will be very strict planning rules in place all over the Cotswolds and in these old villages.

Then you you cannot change even the wind style of the windows in the houses.

You would be heavily fined.

You would have to get planning permission.

If you wanted to convert a building into something else, it would all have to be kept looking exactly as it does

so that town, Chipping Campden pretty much probably if you went back there

100 years ago, 200 years ago, it would look very, very similar.

because you can't change in those sort of towns in the UK.

it's not the same in Much Wenlock. You can't just

demolish a building and put something up.

That's modern.

you wouldn't get planning permission for it.

And that's probably, I would think, in many other countries, as well, around the roundabout.

So that's why it hasn't changed, because no one would be allowed to change it.

Yes. It wouldn't be allowed anyway, because the buildings are protected.

You might say that they are protected by law.

They're all protected. And some of those buildings will be hundreds and hundreds.

Probably some of those buildings will be 4 or 500 years old, probably,

very, very old buildings, probably very cold in the winter, I would think.

Very poor insulation. Yeah.

If you've got solid brick walls, but very good for soundproof. Yes.

Solid brick.

If you ever wanted to live in a house where you know that you're not going to hear much noise from the outside,

make sure your house is built of solid brick or solid stone and then you are okay.

so it

is interesting how we still have a connection with the past, even though you said earlier.

Steve, what I found interesting also yesterday is what you said is

you didn't feel much in the sense of the, the, the emotion that came from it.

And I think that's an interesting point to make because

if you look back at something that has happened

recently, there is always a strong connection.

But I think as time goes by, that connection becomes less and less.

It almost fades away.

So it was around 30 years,

over 30 years, maybe 35 years since you

you actually left that area and actually moved away properly.

And, and you said that you didn't feel that that connection yesterday.

Now were my parents left there sort of 15, 16 years ago probably.

So I used to go back and visit the old,

you know, where I'm at, where I grew up until they left.

But, yes, I was expecting to go back.

So I haven't been back there probably 20 years.

As I've said, to where I was brought up, I was expecting

maybe to feel more sort of sadness or emotion around that, but I didn't.

Maybe that's because I'm a bit older now. Maybe it's because

I've lived in

the West Midlands area for far longer, so that feels more like home now to me.

and I don't have any friends

in that area.

I haven't stayed in touch or in contact with any school, friends or anybody that I used to know

back in the you know, I'm talking back in the 1970s now, so there's no I've got really no connection there.

There was a bit of emotional connection, but, it wasn't too much.

So, it was quite in a way, I was quite pleased because I didn't really want to get upset.

and as you get older, I think you you let go of these things a bit easier.

Yes. It is interesting, isn't it, that how that can happen, how you can you think there will be more reaction

because you thought maybe you would react a lot, a lot stronger?

But when we got there, it almost, there was almost nothing

there.

It was just it was nice to go back there.

I was feeling quite happy to go there, but I didn't feel sad.

No, because I in my mind that's the past now.

I've got no connection with anybody there.

I don't know anybody there.

I mean, nobody said, oh, Stephen, nice to see you back.

I didn't get a welcome as we arrived.

Not that I would have done anyway.

but, yeah, it's because it's a relatively large, you know, town.

It's about a thousand people live there, I think.

Maybe more than that, but.

So I was quite pleased in a way. I just visited we left.

That was it.

I didn't see anyone I knew, didn't recognise anyone.

Which you wouldn't do in a town that size.

Yeah, we probably three quarters of half the people.

There were probably visitors anyway.

So one thing we did notice is there were more tea shops than anything else there.

Yeah. well, that was.

Can I just point out that was your home town, the place where you were, you were raised.

And that's a place called Morton in Marsh. So that's a different.

So that's another place. Chipping Campden is quite close.

So you drive a little bit further and you can go to Chipping Campden.

So that area was, was where Mr.

Steve was raised as a child.

Yes. And he was beautiful.

You don't you don't realise at the time when you're a child, but it is a very nice part of, of England to live in

and, very expensive to live in now, I don't think.

Well, we couldn't afford to buy a house there, Mr.

Duncan.

The house prices there are about double what they are in the rest of England, because it is

just a very picturesque area.

But anyway. Yeah.

And of course the most famous area in that particular part is Chipping Norton.

Chipping Norton is where all the many celebrities live there and politicians live there.

So lots of big celebrities, lots of big names, lots of people driving around

in giant Range Rovers is what you will find.

so in that area, Chipping Norton is the area where

the really, really posh people live and and lots of celebs is there.

Celebrities, royalty even will often be seen walking around Chipping Norton.

Oh very nice. We didn't go there though.

We didn't go there.

Unfortunately, everything is overpriced.

Well, I would, I would say where if you if you go to anywhere where there are

tourists, quite often you will find that everything will be more expensive.

That's what's happening at the moment, by the way, in Paris, in Paris,

they're having a big problem because there aren't enough people going there.

So because the Olympics are taking place, isn't it strange, Steve?

Isn't it ironic that something that they're doing to attract

more people has actually had the opposite effect?

It's put people off.

Well, I was going to ask you and I was going to ask Lewis

if he knew.

I don't suppose Lewis has been to Paris, recently.

but, you know, would this be a good time to visit?

Because they were suggesting quite strongly to us on the news last night that now would be a very good time to visit,

Paris, because, a lot of the hotels are only,

not fully booked, so there might be some bargains to be had.

And certainly, like a lot of the airlines have been struggling

to, to get people, to go there and fill their planes.

And they were interviewing some of the, restaurants and the,

the owners were saying, well, you know, we're only half full.

We expecting a lot more people to visit.

Taxi drivers were struggling with getting enough business.

But the problem is, Steve, you can't go to the places, so.

So that the problem is you can't actually visit any of the big locations, the famous locations.

So you can't go to the Eiffel Tower unless you're attending the Olympics, because those areas

have been separated from the rest of the city.

Yeah. So if you wanted to visit Paris,

if you

go to visit Paris as a tourist, the first place you're going to want to go is the Eiffel Tower.

Yeah.

So if you can't go there, you're going to think to yourself, well, why would I go at all?

Yeah, because the number one place to visit in Paris is the Eiffel Tower.

That's the most famous landmark that everybody knows about.

So if you can't visit that, you're probably going to make the decision not to go at all.

But it's everywhere as well, because there are security boundaries all over Paris.

As you.

I'm sure you don't need me to

explain that quite often with these sorts of events, security is the number one priority.

So there are lots of parts of Paris that you can't get to, or you

you could only go through if you have some sort of pass.

So that's the other reason.

So it's ironic that something that is supposed to generate this interest, this, this immense

interest in the city has actually put a lot of people off because they know that they can't get around.

Or of course, as we mentioned a few moments ago, everything is more expensive at the moment.

I was posh before I went to the Cotswolds.

And everybody at school was a.

They all spoke like that, all very countrified, and I, I turned up and my sister,

because, of course, when you go to a local school, most of the people that go to that school from local families

and, they're all local people

and they're not tourists going to the schools, and they all

probably their

parents and grandparents grew up there and were born there.

So when I went to school, speaking like they used to call me Mr.

Posh, I was I was the posh kid from out of town, my sister didn't get.

And I used to get a lot of not bullying, but a lot of ribbing, shall we say, a lot of mimicking.

What do you mean, ribbing, I call it.

They people used to call me posh and a snob because.

And my accent then was even posher because for some reason my parents had very posh accents.

Even though we didn't, they didn't come from posh families at all.

No, they lived in a council house.

Yeah, both my parents.

You can just potty describe that. They probably received their pronunciation.

Yes, because a lot of people then in that era grew up with very posh accents.

They they liked to imitate the Queen and the royal family, even though they were very poor, which my parents were.

They came from very poor backgrounds, but moving, but with this accent I've got now and I used to speak really posh.

So there are more people living there now.

So there are more people living in the area now with money.

That's why most people think of that area as being the place where a lot of the wealthy people live.

Because because basically that is the case, because over the years people have moved there.

It's become a very attractive place and it's not far from London.

That's the other thing.

So you can travel, commute quite easily from that part of the world to London quite quickly and easily.

So that's another reason why it is it is quite popular as well.

I am feeling a little bit tired.

What we have as a community.

But we are kind of fighting a battle in a way, aren't we?

Us, you, me and you watching out there because we have to try and stay relevant.

We have to almost fight to to keep ourselves

watched and keep us together, because that is the thing that we have to try and do.

I think it is important probably now more than ever, Steve, we have to make sure we have lots of people around us.

People, good people, kind people, generous people,

nice people, like minded people.

Yeah, some of these like minded.

It means you you tend to have similar opinions about things and and understand each other.

So the difference is we are here to do that, to share

experiences, nice things, not to create anger

or hate or disagreement.

We don't want people shouting and fighting. However,

it is more

difficult than ever to break through that noise.

It is, and it's a very serious thing.

I do like to have fun here, but this is a very serious point that I have to make.

It is becoming more and more difficult for this to work

as a thing, because there is so much noise around nowadays.

I am not being dramatic either. It is a real thing, you know.

I've seen it actually happen with with everything that we've been doing over the past couple of years

and certainly over the past 18 years here on YouTube.

Anyway. Mr.. Steve, we will leave it there.
